+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-++-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
What's happening in the world of live acoustic music, today and tonight? Here's a FOUR-PART Guide.
.
PART ONE: "where things usually happen" - our annotated list of places, BY TOWN AND VENUE (in Southern Cal), with the odds of finding an acoustic show there tonight.
PART TWO: "recurring events" - our detailed listing, BY START TIMES, with descriptive write-ups of what happens today / tonight (expanded details of some of what’s in Part One).
PART THREE: “today’s radio / web radio and TV shows” with acoustic music.
PART FOUR: “venue catalog” - locations, web sites, street addresses and contact info for ALL acoustic-music-friendly live performance venues in Southern California.

To get the complete picture of live acoustic music, see the listings below AND the Guide’s current NEWS FEATURES and SPOTLIGHT EVENTS – at separate urls that change frequently with fresh updates, all available at

www.acousticmusic.net

– click “Acoustic Americana Music Guide.”

In 2011, these are the events for the “first Mondays” of the month, January 3, February 7, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, July 4 (though, being Independence Day, most are not likely to happen on July 4), August 1, September 5 (but that’s Labor Day, so check before going), October 3, November 7, & December 5.

PART ONE: "WHERE THINGS USUALLY HAPPEN"
- our quick list of places, by town and venue (in Southern Cal), with the odds of a show there tonight.
.
A few venues are hotbeds of live music on Mondays - always or often with acoustic music - though they do NOT host residencies or recurring series tonight. These, PLUS tonight’s residencies and recurring series are RIGHT HERE.
.
THE SCENE for today and tonight includes THE ODDS of finding each place listed, from northern Santa Barbara County to south Orange County, from downtown L.A. to the valleys to the Inland Empire, from the desert to the sea.

.

Sign-ups at 8, preceded by comedy from 7:30-8:30 pm. Venue has a piano and guitar you are welcome to use. Early arrival recommended; $5 minimum on food & drink in lieu of cover.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/7:

.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 2/7:
CRANE’S HOLLYWOOD TAVERN, 1611 N El Centro Av (betw Selma & Hollywood Bl), Hollywood; www.myspace.com/cranestavern.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
EL CID, 4212 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-668-0318; www.elcidla.com.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 4/7:
HOTEL CAFÉ, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040. This is absolutely the hippest place in L.A. with acoustic music, though the décor is nothing special at all. Acoustic performers are in the mix of acts scheduled one per hour – check their schedule carefully and plan for Hollywood traffic so you can be on time. There are very few seats, and those are only available if you order food from the menu, so be prepared to stand.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS (summer only) 1/1:
JOHN ANSON FORD AMPHITHEATRE (aka FORD AMPHITHETRE), 2580 Cahuenga Bl East, Hollywood 90068; 323-461-3673; 323-GO1-FORD; www.FordTheatres.org; box dinner orders 310-652-3797. Free Monday night “Jams” series, but not what most musicians expect that word to mean. It’s a series of focused, thematic, participatory programs.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
M BAR, 1253 Vine St (at Fountain), Hollywood 90038; 323-856-0036. An eclectic assortment of acts at this supper club and bar, and they have a grand piano.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
MUSIC BOX AT THE HENRY FONDA THEATRE, 6126 Hollywood Bl (betw Argyle & Gower), Hollywood; 323-464-0808.
.
Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 4/7:
THE PIG 'N’ WHISTLE, 6714 Hollywood Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.pignwhistle.com; 323-463-0000. This place, more than ANY other, maintains the charm of Old Hollywood of the great clubs of the silver screen era – the interior architecture is amazing. The entertainment is often acoustic lineups, but (almost always) people whose names you’ve never heard anyplace else.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/5:
AROMA COFFEEHOUSE, 8539 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 323-644-2833.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/14:
CAT CLUB, 8911 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-657-0888. Usually loud rock, but not always.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/12:
HOUSE OF BLUES - SUNSET STRIP, 8430 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 323-848-5100; www.hob.com. Rarely are the shows here acoustic, and they aren’t all that dedicated to the blues, either.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/1:
RAINBOW BAR & GRILL, 9015 W Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-278-4232.
Every Monday, 8:30 pm, OPEN MIC; sign-ups at 8, show at 8:30 pm.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/7:
THE ROXY, 9009 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; www.theroxyonsunset.com; 310-276-2222. Usually loud rock, but not always.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/14:
TROUBADOUR, 9081 Santa Monica Bl, West Hollywood; www.troubadour.com; 310-276-6168. This old club, famous and storied for events of decades past, is neither media-savvy nor media-friendly, so we haven’t often had reason to list them in the Guide. They do host some acoustic and electric Americana shows, including the occasional star from the Austin music scene.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/10:
VIPER ROOM, 8852 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-358-1881. There are two stages here. The main, upstairs stage is usually booked with very loud rock acts, often drowning-out the act playing the postage-stamp-size performance space downstairs. Check to be sure the downstairs act you want to see is scheduled before the upstairs stage opens.
.
West Hollywood; MONDAY’S ODDS 1/10:
WHISKY A-GO-GO, 8901 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 310-652-4202. Usually loud rock, but not always.

JOE’S GREAT AMERICAN BAR AND GRILL, 4311 W Magnolia Bl, Burbank 91505; 818-729-0805; www.rootsatjoes.com - www.myspace.com/rootsatjoes -www.danceatjoes.com.
The 1st Monday, every month, 8 pm-1 am, it’s “RONNIE MACK'S BARN DANCE” with a full lineup of guest performers and THE BARNDANCE BAND; info, www.danceatjoes.com/barndance and www.myspace.com/421889964.
Since 1988, Ronnie Mack has marshaled forward the Los Angeles roots and alt country scene with his once-a-month Barn Dance. It’s simply amazing who has played the series. In 2003, Jim Hollander filmed his documentary, "First Tuesdays at Ronnie Mack's Barndance," featuring performances and interviews with series alumni Dwight Yoakam, Dave Alvin, Rosie Flores, Big Sandy, James Intveld, Mike Stinson and more. It’s available at www.hollandermedia.com.
In addition to each month’s lineup of guest performers, there’s always the BARN DANCE BAND. That brings Ronnie Mack on lead vocals & rhythm guitar (with a lead here & there), Skip Edwards on the keys, Marty Rifkin on Pedal Steel, Harry Orlove on lead guitar, Paul Marshall (I See Hawks in L.A.) on bass, Dave Raven on drums (or on occasion John Palmer). A fun note: Joe’s Great American Bar & Grill is the old Crazy Jack’s, where the Barn Dance first began many years ago. More on Ronnie Mack and his legendary Barn Dance at www.electricearl.com/BDance.html.

*Mon, every Monday; workshop for artists:
7:30-9:30 pm “MAGIC INGREDIENT SONGWRITING SEMINAR” with BILL BURNETT, is a continuing workshop series for artists at a private residence in Altadena. Reservations get directions; contact co-producer Duane Thorin for info or to apply, at 323-627-0662 or duane@duanethorin.com.
BILL BURNETT is an accomplished professional songwriter of depth, versatility and accomplishments (check him out at www.billburnettsongmine.com). His years of writing songs for countless performers, TV shows and the stage have led him to develop a method to seek-out magic ingredients that make songs spring to life. The series’ promo promises:
• “Learn the 20 tricks of kicking your own butt and finding your own magic.”
• “Master the Ten Tenets of Anti-Boredom.”
• “Uncover the magic hiding in your own fingers, piano keys, voice, heart and mind.”
• “Study songs from masters of all persuasions, like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Rodgers & Hart, Yip Harburg, Randy Newman, and discover their tricks for creating magic.”
• “Revisit the fundamentals of rhyme, rhythm, melody, harmony and structure – the lost art of song craft.”
• “Then apply all this to your own work and write better songs.”
Series co-producer DUANE THORIN says, “This exciting 7 week course [recurring] will change the way you write. Magic. That’s the ingredient that makes the difference between ordinary songs and world-class classics. And it’s the one thing most songwriters overlook when they write. Each session examines the best works and magic of certain fine songwriters, much as Bill does on the Songmine site, and then gets hands-on, discussing the myriad ways to make songs eloquent, interesting, and yes, magical.”
Space is limited. First time is free (please make a donation); then, it’s $30 per session a la carte, or $160 for 8 sessions pre-paid (an $80 savings).
