Tue, Jan 17; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEKEND” pick:
8 pm WILL KIMBROUGH, from EMMYLOU HARRIS & HER RED DIRT BOYS Band, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
Named "Instrumentalist of the Year" in 2004 by the Americana Music Association, Will has been dubbed an "Alien" performer as a way to explain his un-earthly, masterful performance on the guitar.
Will has released 10 artist albums and a 3-CD box set, including five albums as a founding member of DADDY, the BIS-QUITS, and WILL & THE BUSHMEN. The talented singer-songwriter, award-winning guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and bandleader has a voracious appetite for every aspect of the craft of music.
Spending most of 2011 touring with Emmylou Harris as one of her Red Dirt Boys, WILL KIMBROUGH brings his formidable repertoire to the San Gabriel Foothills for his Coffee Gallery Backstage solo debut.
His profound musical knowledge and expert creations reflect years of learning the intricacies of folk, blues, gospel, country, rock’n’roll, punk rock and jazz. With songs recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Jack Ingram, Todd Snider and others, Kimbrough's multidisciplinary approach has led to many notable collaborations in the studio and on-stage with artists such as Roseanne Cash, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, the Jayhawks, Mark Knopfler, Buddy Miller, John Prine, Toumani Diabate, Kim Richey, Josh Rouse, Matthew Ryan, Billy Joe Shaver, Todd Snider, Mavis Staples, Garrison Starr, Adrienne Young, and others.
Kimbrough co-leads (with Tommy Womack) the Nashville juke-boogie-R&B collective known as DADDY, and continues to perform often with Rodney Crowell, Jimmy Buffett, Todd Snider and others when not performing his own solo shows, writing hit songs, working as a session performer, or producing other notable artists across various genres.
Since early 2010, Kimbrough has been posting his weekly "LICK OF THE DAY" videos on YouTube -- featuring an intimate moment with the man and a short lesson in how to perform some of his signature sounds on a plethora of cool gear - earning him even more critical acclaim.

Thu, Jan 19; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm BRITTNI PAIVA at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
At age 22, she’s already acclaimed as the top ukulele player from Hawaii. Brittni Paiva (pie –VAH) is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist whose sound and concept are influenced by jazz, rock, flamenco, and classical music as well as world music from Brazil, Japan, and elsewhere. Ukulele, guitar, electric bass, piano and drums are Brittni’s instruments of choice, yet when it comes to the ukulele she invests as much soulfulness as skill. “Brittni brings a whole new spirit to the music and to the instrument: pop sensibilities in a smooth jazz format,” says John Schroeter, music producer and author of Between the Strings: The Secret Lives of Guitars. “It’s got a new kind of energy—it’s infectious.”
At 22 years of age, Brittni Paiva (pi –VAH) is the preeminent female `ukulele player from Hawaii. Affectionately referred to as the `ukulele darling, Brittni is a native of Hilo, on the Big Island. She is a multi-award winning, multi-instrumentalist with a prodigious gift who is wholeheartedly embraced by a global audience.
Over the past six years Brittni has self-produced three award-winning CDs. She took home the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Most Promising Artist of the Year in 2005 in support of her debut release, Brittni x 3. Her sophomore release, Hear, won `Ukulele Album of the Year in the Hawaii Music Awards, otherwise known as Hawaii’s People’s Choice Awards in 2006. This CD was also nominated for the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainer of the Year. Her third album in as many years, simply titled, Brittni, won `Ukulele Album of the Year in the Hawaii Music Awards in 2007 and was nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
2009 marked the launch her fourth CD, Four Strings: The Fire Within in a national campaign. This CD contains upbeat, soulful interpretations of her most passionate work in world music. Charles Michael Brotman, Hawaii’s first Grammy Award recipient, co-produced the album. Burning like an eternal flame, instrumental music is an Old World tradition that has bonded people for centuries illuminating aspects of the human spirit that resonate to a higher truth.
“The songs on this CD are my favorites,” Brittni says. “I chose them because they reflect the change in me, showing the increased complexity of my craft. I see music as a canvas and my arrangements are the brush strokes and warm colors that create the picture.”
Brittni is well-known in world music circles with almost two million hits on YouTube. She began her music career at age four trained in classical piano through the Suzuki method. Seven years later, her grandfather gave her an `ukulele, a traditional 4-string Hawaiian folk instrument. For ten years, the `ukulele has been Ms. Paiva’s instrument of choice, though she also plays guitar, bass, piano, and drums.
Brittni performs frequently in Hawaii, and along the Pacific coast

8 pm TRACY GRAMMER with Rob Schnell and Michael Kurman at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
A long-time favorite on the folk circuit, Tracy Grammer is a sensitive, creative songwriter and interpreter with warm vocals, a girl-next-door stage presence, and beautiful guitar and violin work best known for her unshakeable dedication to the legacy of her late partner, songwriter Dave Carter. With a quick wit and a keen writer's eye, she is also a powerful storyteller, and it's often the case that at the end of the night, audiences can't decide which they loved better -- the songs, or the stories behind them.
With several albums that have consistently topped the folk and Americana airplay charts over the last 12 years and two intimate EPs that have won critical raves, Grammer has earned a reputation as "one of the finest musicians anywhere in folkdom" (Boston Globe). Her newest album, LITTLE BLUE EGG, is a collection of archived recordings from the Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer home studios circa 1997-2002, and will be released on Red House Records on February 14, 2012.
Grammer is delighted to be bringing her sometimes silly but always brilliant Philadelphia-based rhythm section to the Coffee Gallery Backstage this tour. With Michael Kurman on bass, guitar, and vocals and Rob Schnell on drums, percussion, mandolin, guitar, and vocals, the instrumental palette expands, the energy intensifies, and the repertoire deepens to include long-lost favorites from the back catalog as well as newer songs that benefit from the band's chemistry and fuller sound. This promises to be a special night for all.

4 pm “ACCIDENTS IN ABSTRACT PAINTING” brings an intentional crash of a military drone aircraft filled with paint, guided to destruction into a 20-foot wall in Arroyo Seco, near the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, by artist RICHARD JACKSON. It will “demonstrate the element of chance in abstract painting,” says the artist. We have no comment. It’s sponsored by the Pasadena Armory Center for the Arts in conjunction with the ongoing, multi-venue, Pacific Standard Time series of exhibitions. Presumably there’s a safe place to stand and watch. Get info at www.pacificstandardtime.org or www.armoryarts.org.

7 pm THE SCARLET FURIES plus THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
The Scarlet Furies is fronted by a beautiful young singer, songwriter Raleigh Holmes. They have been doing lots of shows and festivals for the last year with folks like Leon Russell, The Subdudes, John Waite, and Kenny Loggins, and have a new CD "Dark Clad Company", produced by Rusty Anderson of Paul McCartney's band and mastered by Gavin Lurssen (triple Grammy winner with T Bone Burnette), and a new soundtrack for the hit game Gray Matter just released. Here's a peice of a review from The Alternate Root.
"There is a gentleness and quiet beauty to The Scarlet Furies recent release, ‘Dark Clad Company’. Raleigh Holmes vocals whisper promises (“All or Nothing”) and say goodbye (“Gone Tomorrow”) with a sweetness that leave a smile and a glass half full memory. Lyrics and story lines, like on “Young Goodman Brown”, lend an age to the songs. The dust of time works well with the instrumentation and The Scarlet Furies natural ability to add freshness. They reincarnate tradition and the resulting sound never shows age. They take a modern classic track by Nirvana (“Heart Shaped Box”) and replace the grunge of Seattle with forest freshness more in line with the folk side of Americana. "— The Alternative Root.
The Merry Wives of Windsor is a ten-piece all-female folk band based in Pasadena, California. Blending elements of North American, British Isles, and Contemporary Folk music, the foundation of the Merry Wives' sound is rich four- and five-part vocal harmonies, with support and ornamentation by acoustic folk instruments.
A collaborative group, the Wives bring a unique sensibility to every song they perform, from traditional Irish pieces, to original compositions that range from beautiful to bawdy. With musical backgrounds in everything from Folk, to Musical Theater, and even straying to Pop and Opera, the Merry Wives present a relevant musical perspective, while still staying true to the spirit of the music they perform. These lovely and talented ladies have graced the stages of the El Rey Theater, the Grove of Anaheim, and The Galaxy Theatre, as well as Renaissance Faires across the country.

CLAUDIA NYGAARD is an incredible storyteller, not just as a songwriter, but also in the charming tales she spins between her songs. Delivering a song like "Miss Kitty" or Dumped By A Dweeb" she gets an audience laughing, then she turns on the steam and romance with a song like "Georgia Boy" or "I Want To Touch You". A minute later, "J.C.", or "His Left Side" have put a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye, and then you are back to tapping your feet and singing along. Performing solo, with her jumbo Tacoma JK50 guitar and her tiny Tenor ukulele, Claudia will give you an intimate evening of music that will linger with you for a long time.
"Claudia has a talent for finding in a simple phrase the most excellent songs, where ayone else might hear nothing. I am continually amazed by the emotions she can evoke; to a social statement which could be a call to action or at least some inner searching, to sexy and funny that leaves everyone in the room delightfully, joyfully heated. Always delighted to have her at Kerrville." Dalis Allen, Kerrville Folk Festival, Kerrville, TX.
"Claudia was a smash hit with our audience. Her songs, her stories, her charming wit, and her engaging personality combined to provide all of us with a wonderful evening of entertainment." Kelson Slayman, "Folk at the Cannery", Dataw Island, SC.

THE COALS bring elegant songwriting and heartfelt harmonies as the backbone of their folky sound. A little bit country, a little bit Leonard Cohen, this quintet can stir your spirit and soothe your soul. With its warm blend of upright bass, piano, accordion, and dobro, the band forges a sound that is sweet, sad, and rollicking all at once. Led by the earthy baritone of singer/songwriter Jason Mandell, who was signed to a publishing deal by the Chrysalis A&R man who discovered Ray LaMontagne, The Coals carry the troubadour tradition to some surprisingly beautiful places.

(“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
Debra Davis writes hooky Americana-rock songs that hit deep. The singer/songwriter and her Band of Gold are powerfully fun live, and have a big international following of fans who call themselves “debheads.” Debra is a storyteller---her songs make you think and feel…and sing along. Songs from Debra’s 3 CDs have been featured on numerous TV shows and films, and her latest features a duet with 5-time Grammy winner Christopher Cross. She recently wrote the new theme song, “Girl of the World,” for the Global Girl Media organization, and she was featured on “Angel Encounters” (The Nashville Network), which explored the stories behind her songs.
Debra has toured nationwide playing festivals and venues like Summerfest, the Bluebird in Nashville, Bluebird’s stage at Countryfest, House of Blues, the Troubadour, the Coach House, Palm Springs PRIDE, LA Marathon, and Revlon Run/Walk. She’s opened for such artists as Christopher Cross, Edwin McCain, and Collective Soul. Her songs are on several compilation CDs for good causes, including “Artists Against Cancer,“ “It’s About Eve” for breast cancer research, and “Home” for Children International.
Band of Gold members play or have played and recorded with Melissa Etheridge, Christopher Cross, Glenn Frey, Loggins & Messina, The Motels, Nels Kline Trio, Joe Walsh and Wilson Phillips. With Nick Kirgo playing emotive slide on acoustic guitar, Wade Biery on bass and high harmonies, the nimble-fingered Bob Emmet on keys, and Debra’s built-in hubby/drummer Dave Beyer laying down the foundation, Debra’s music will at once take you on a journey of wit and reflection, and feel like a neighborly chat over a picket fence.
John Zipperer & Friends have played all over the country from festivals to House Concerts. Known for their upbeat spin on Acoustic Americana. Their witty lyrics and touching tunes will tug at your heart strings yet, send you away smiling. Their shows are jam packed with energy, humor, fun, and yes even a few tears. Enter the room a stranger and instantly find yourself another one of John Zipperer’s friends. John Zipperer, a former instructor at the world renowned Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Ca., has played with greats such as Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge), Dave Sutton (Lucinda Williams, Melissa Ethridge), Doan Perry (Jethro Tull) and Jimmy Scott (Ike Turner, The Four Tops).
Tara Sitser can be heard as a narrator and vocalist in musical cast recordings, audiobooks and radio spots. She has performed with John M, Michael Grate (Molly Zenobia, Renee Myara Quartet), Daniel Glass (Royal Crown Revue) and Jimmy Scott.
Jim Van Booven has performed extensively on the West Coast including a stint with his younger brother, Doug, in a Grand Funk Railroad tribute band.
Eddie “The Spoon-man” Terry has been playing spoons for 78 years. He has appeared with the Horace Heidt Orchestra, won first prize on The Ted Mack Amateur Hour and has the distinction of having appeared on The Gong Show without getting Gonged!
Barrett Tagliarino is currently an instuctor at the Musicians Institute. Barrett has published many guitar instructional books. He also has two excellent solo CDs available.

This award-winning Los Angeles-based duo has made a strong mark on the acoustic/rock scene at home as well as across the US, Canada, Thailand, Ireland and Italy. This duo has it all: great musicianship, outstanding voices and exceptional songs. Andy’s songwriting is original, passionate and sincere. It covers a vast lyrical landscape, bringing to mind Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. One reviewer said of Renee, “Safier's voice oft drips with an aching sensitivity filtered through delicate beauty and a fragility that would break and disappear in less capable hands”, and another of Andy, “Hill is rapidly becoming a songwriter to watch”.
Andy Hill & Renee Safier’s ten CDs have garnered them awards from Los Angeles Music Awards “Americana Group of the Year" to the International Acoustic Music Awards "Best Duo or Group". Andy and Renee provide a much needed connection with live music to their audiences, whether in an intimate House Concert or at a large festival.     For information on their CDs or their extensive performance schedule, go to www.andyandrenee.com

Thu, Feb 2; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm MARY FLOWER, folk guitar royalty, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
First and foremost, Mary Flower is a world-class guitarist who swings the blues. Along the way, she’s mastered the intricate, harmonically subtle Piedmont style, with its good-timey, ragtime feel. The Piedmont style forms the foundation of much of her work, but she’s an unrivaled interpreter of Mississippi blues and an ingenious composer in her own right whose tunes take American music into uncharted waters. In the rarefied atmosphere where Mary operates, she’s recognized everywhere as one of the pre-eminent fingerstyle guitarists who continue in the rich acoustic blues tradition. In fact, she’s twice placed in the top three at the prestigious National Finger Picking Championship in Winfield, Kansas–the only woman to do so. That’s remarkable enough, but Flower goes beyond technique. She’s a warm singer who ranges far in the byways of blues, pop and jazz for the kind of down-home yet sophisticated material she feels comfortable with. Mary brings smarts and sublime equipoise to her music–you feel happier after listening to her.
Mary has been nominated in two categories (“Acoustic Artist” and “Acoustic Album”) for a 2012 Blues Music Award presented by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. She's also up for "Best Female Artist" in her own town (Portland Music Awards) and the recipient of the Muddy Award in 2011 by the Cascade Blues Assn. for Best Acoustic Guitar.
Downbeat says of her recent duets CD on Yellow Dog Records, “Superlative… such a high level of proficiency that your heart will beat faster and your blood race. One of the Top 10 roots albums of 2011, no question about it. (4 stars) Twenty years and nine albums into her recording career, Flower is a superlative fingerstyle guitarist square in the Piedmont tradition. She also excels on lap steel. Easy confidence characterizes her singing style.”
Acoustic Guitar says, “Beyond the tight song arrangements, expert musicianship, and crystal clear production, Misery Loves Company’s crowning achievement is reflected in Flower’s ability to capture her musical inspiration—the rural, romantic South—in word and sound. Her unpretentious vocal style, compelling guitar work, and minimalist arrangements perfectly capture the feeling of gently floating down a slowly moving river or strolling down an isolated dirt road. “

"These freewheeling lords of California psych country approach their music as if it were a portal, an unseen threshold that, once crossed, promises a wholly unpredictable experience. The Hawks' singular style operates on an epic scale, exploring weird panoramas of hallucinatory metaphor with a sound as much traditional hillbilly as it is acceleratedlysergic-rock spontaneity. Any flight taken with I See Hawks In L.A. assures a view to startling new perspectives. Up, up and away."

Sat, Feb 4; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm MODAL TEASE STRING BAND plus CLIFF WAGNER & THE OLD #7 at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
Modal Tease and Old Number 7 double headline this bill in celebration of their new CDs, bringing you a not-to-be-missed show that celebrates music from Appalachia, Nashville, and Beyond.
Modal Tease has been serving up sizzling' hot slices of Old Tunes for New Times since 2009. Rooted in America's old time music tradition, they’re adventurous and versatile, contrasting fast-paced breakdowns with moseying blues, archaic crooked fiddle tunes with straight-up square dance numbers, humorous ditties with Carter Family laments, mandolin with fiddle counterpoint, and typical clawhammer banjo with novel applications. What unites their varied tastes is their penchantfor modal tunes, which liberally pepper their performances, giving them an "out of this world" quality often associated with Celtic or Irish music. But rest assured their music is 100% American.
"Belinda Thom (fiddle) and Cliff Latimer (mandolin) belt out tight unison melodies and vocal harmonies, while Jim Hamilton (clawhammer banjo), balances rhythm and melody, and Larry Ullman (standup bass) provides the backdrop. Recently, they won awards at the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Competition and the Goleta Old-Time Fiddlers Convention. They recorded "Aggravatin’ Beauty," which will be unveiled at this special show.
Cliff Wagner & The Old #7 might just be a band like nothing you have never heard. Mixing Bluegrass, Blues and Honky Tonk in a way that has audiences on their feet. Cliff and the other members of The Old #7 are taking American Roots Music to the next level, and the fans are following. This band gained nationwide exposure on FOX TVs “The Next Great American Band”, finishing 7th out of 8,000 bands who originally tried out for the show, defying the judge's expectations that a "Bluegrass" band would not be accepted by the general public. by. The band's release of “Hobo's Lullaby,” which debuted at #35 on the AMA Americana chart and shortly rose to #28, showcased the band’s musicianship, versatility and song writing skills by featuring something for everyone: hard-driving blues- and bluegrass-influenced tunes, country pop, and tender ballads.
This past November, the band released its newest album, "Country Funk," which demonstrates why this band sounds like no other contemporary Bluegrass band playing today. Cliff Wagner & The Old #7 showcases superior musicianship, magical harmonies and an energetic, fresh new sound, which simply must be heard to be believed.
