.
First, A Quick Weekend Overview…
.
FESTIVAL:
Festival season continues this weekend, with the annual TEMECULA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL (two stages, both indoors if it’s raining, both free except for GREAT evening concerts Friday and Saturday). PLUS, there are plenty of IRISH music events for ST. PATRICK’S DAY, despite the rain that canceled the official L.A. celebration on the L.A. Live / Nokia Plaza. Still, some of the best indoor venues are hoppin’!
.
ST. PATRICK’S DAY IS BIGGER THAN EVER:
We bring you a roundup of specific gigs and hot party places in Saturday’s listings for the day when everybody is Irish. Really, get THIS: 39.7% of Americans claim some Irish ancestry. That’s over 10% of the U.S. population. But March 17’s wearin’ o’ the green is much bigger than that. Over 54% of Americans will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, spending an average of $39 each. That adds up to an expected $4.5 BILLION in 2012 St. Patrick’s Day spending, which will be a new all-time record! As you down your green beer, you’re engaging in economic stimulus! Erin Go Braugh!
.
RADIO:
Start your Saturday morning with the new “ROOTS AND BEYOND” folk-Americana show on KPFK, 90.7 FM, live streaming on the web. It’s a cooperative thing with rotating hosts, and this week brings THE WAYFARING STRANGERS, led by ART PODELL, an original NEW CHRISTY MINSTREL, with lots of St. Patrick’s Day-themed Irish music on tap. It’s ridiculously early, 6-8 am, or available through the coming week at your convenience at www.kpfk.org .
You can conclude your weekend with “FOLKSCENE” on KPFK, Sunday evening from 6-8 pm.
.
SATURDAY MATINEE:
If you stay in town Saturday, catch the matinee CD release show by JOHN BATDORF at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena.
.
FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY EVENINGS:
There are MANY evening shows, and we’ve rounded-up all we can for you, below.
.
RAIN?
Hey, we really do need the late season rain. SPRING arrives this weekend! Just grab your umbrella and GO!
.
ROAD TRIP?
If you’re afraid you’ll dissolve in the rain, break the piggy bank and go the airport. The massive SXSW (South By Southwest) Music Festival in Austin heads into its closing weekend, with a nearly incomprehensible assortment of nonstop music.
.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK:
Stay in town with the rain, or travel to Austin or Temecula, the opportunities are especially abundant to ENJOY SOME LIVE ACOUSTIC MUSIC!

3 pm JOHN BATDORF plays a matinee CD RELEASE SHOW at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
"The music of John Batdorf has always been a part of our lives. From the songs of the 70s with Batdorf & Rodney to his solo career in songwriting, his songs have always been special and always there. As a house concert presenter, I expected yet another great show, but I wasn't prepared for the polished soul-touching concert we had, and for days after I was somewhat awed and overwhelmed as I recalled it, and I thought maybe it was just me. As I spoke with more and more friends who had been there, I realized that it was universal. We had all been completely blown away! I must warn you though, it is dangerous to see John play. One wants to forsake career and home life to become a John Batdorf groupie. I can't wait to see him again... For you who are thinking of having John play, think no more. He's a true pro not only musically, but at making everything run smoothly. John is so approachable, so talented, so warm and friendly...It's like like having your best friend visit...He really is one of the great ones." - Ben Gangloff
+
About the new CD...
"'One Last Wish,' the promise made back in 1972 with the first Batdorf & Rodney album has been fulfilled time and again by John - and this, his newest release, almost 40 years on is one more reason to have remained a fan all this time. His way of wielding words with sublime melody is a talent others only wish they had. Once more with feeling - and a lot of it. " - Dean Sciarra, Itsaboutmusic.com
+
Come spend a few hours at one of LA's premier listening rooms and hear the new original songs from John's new solo CD, "One Last Wish" with just him and his guitar, the way the songs were born! John will also be performing several songs from his four decades of recording. This is "the official Coffee Gallery Backstage CD release party." More at http://johnbatdorfmusic.com/index.html

7 pm THE TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS bring their multiple-award-winning western / cowboy song and dance, with cowboy troubadour JOHN BERGSTROM opening, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
The Tumbleweeds, who started on this very stage, are WINNERS of the 2011 WMA "Traditional Album By A Duo or Group" award.
+
"Great harmony, creative arrangements, keeping the Tradition alive!" - Douglas B. Green, Riders In The Sky.
+
Formed in 2005, The Tumbling Tumbleweeds have won the Academy of Western Artists Will Rogers Award for Western Music Group of the Year and the Western Music Association Crescendo Award for Most Promising Talent and have also just been nominated for the 2011 WMA Entertainer of the Year Award. They were also named one of the Top 10 Live Acoustic Acts in Southern California by Guide editor Larry Wines, writing the annual roundup for FolkWorks Magazine. Their newest CD "Blaze Across the West" not only received glowing reviews all around the globe but also WON the 2011 WMA Traditional Album By A Duo or Group Award. Their Debut Album titled "The Tumbling Tumbleweeds" hit #1 on the Top 10 Cowboy/Western Music CD Charts and both albums are receiving radio airplay all around the World.
+
As their name suggests, The Tumbling Tumbleweeds are a tribute to the era that gave us singing cowboys like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and the great swingtime cowboy band, The Sons of the Pioneers. Although The Tumbling Tumbleweeds feel the Sons of the Pioneers are their "blue print" they do bring their very own unique brand of entertainment to the world of Western Music and have been hailed as brilliant young songwriters. It's show complete with singing, humor, storytelling and some good ol' boot stompin' western antics! "The great news is The Tumbling Tumbleweeds don't sound like the Sons of the Pioneers, or Riders In The Sky, or Sons of the San Joaquin. They sound 100% like The Tumbling Tumbleweeds. and that, folks, is simply wonderful!" - Rick Huff, The Western Way Magazine.

+
It's "Slack Key Sunday" with Jim “Kimo” West and Some Very Special Guests.
+
Jim “Kimo” West is recognized as one of the world’s top “slack key” guitarists and brings his own unique musical perspective to this great acoustic guitar tradition. The “nahenahe” or gentle sound of ki ho’alu as it is known in Hawaii is heard throughout the recent Oscar-nominated film, “The Descendants”. His use of multiple tunings , including many of his own invention and his fluid technique, give Kimo a unique and identifiable sound and his playing literally transports the listener to the islands of Hawaii, a place of great natural beauty where people remain highly connected to the “aina” or land.
+
Even older than the blues, Hawaiian slack key got it’s start in the 1830’s on the Big Island of Hawaii when Spanish vaqueros who were imported to teach the Hawaiians cattle management, gave guitars to the Hawaiian cowboys or “paniolos”. Hawaiians “slacked” the strings from standard tuning to create a new way of playing where bass, rhythm and melody are played simultaneously.
+
He is a recent winner of the Hawaii Music Awards, a Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian “Grammy”) nominee and a two-time winner of the LA Treasure Award for his contributions toward the perpetuation of ki ho’alu.
+
Kimo performs at the slack key guitar festivals in Hawaii and most recently as a featured performer at the Southern California Slack Key Festival. His playing has been featured in a number of films, TV spots, the Disney Channel and NPR.
+
Kimo will be joined my some very special guests and you can expect to see some great hula as well . For more info and music, go to www.jimkimowest.com

The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events, in ever-UPDATED EDITIONS will continue to bring you more news of concerts, club gigs, workshops, benefit shows, festivals and more (always more -- as we dig out from beneath the incoming mountains of email telling us about it, so we can organize it and tell YOU about all of it).

We’ll keep covering the world of current acoustic music happenings and bringing you "heads up" notices to buy advance tix for shows likely to sell-out – and lots more.

We’ll continue to tell you what acoustic musicians are doing, in the studio, on the stage, and as activist / artists seeking to improve things for all of us. We’ll tell you about the growing number of radio & TV shows with live acoustic performances (when it’s radio, it’s available mostly on the web, of course, since the Guide is published from acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.)

And, as Spring blooms and the 2012 FESTIVAL SEASON progresses, we’ll bring you news and reviews of the many acoustic music festivals happening near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere.

As always, thanks for making the journey with us. With your help, the road goes on forever (even if we can’t afford the gas anymore to find out where it goes)!
