Here’s the lineup and schedule:
♪ 7-7:45pm -- Barry Cullison was raised with roots Americana music. His dad played a ’46 flat top Gibson and knew every Hank Williams song there was. His mom sang harmony and played the harmonica and dulcimer. With his two musical sisters it was tough to find a harmony part while the family sang on car trips to pass the time. He was raised country but seduced by rock and roll. Barry has paid dues both as an actor and guitar player in Chicago, New York and now LA. TV shows like “X Files”, “Magnificent Seven” and “Cold Case” paid the bills. But he has a passion to play guitar and he keeps cranking out his own tunes. More at http://podcast.barrycullison.com

♪ 8-8:45 pm -- Pat Nason, a native of Baltimore, is developing a reputation in the L.A. singer-songwriter community for well-crafted original songs that deliver keen observations on life, with humor, wit and depth of feeling. 7 pm ANGELO M. brings award-winning folk and blues to Fiddlers Crossing, 206 East F St (at Robinson St), Tehachapi. Tickets by phone, 661-823-9994.
+
Angelo M. (short for Melasecca) is a master fingerstyle and slide guitarist who was able to make the unlikely midlife transition from blue collar steel worker to award-winning songwriter.
+
Angelo M. is the real deal. Many performers can sing the blues, but this former steel worker has lived it. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years was bought-out and then put into bankruptcy, Angelo not only lost his livelihood but his pension, as well.
+
Fortunately, he had other talents, which will be on display in concert.
+
He caught Nashville's attention with his two successful self-released albums. His 2012 label debut, "From Steel to Strings," is now gaining worldwide airplay. Some of the tracks are featured in the PBS television series "RoadTrip Nation," and have brought him several prestigious songwriting honors, including a win in Billboard's "World Song" contest.

Angelo M. considers himself a folk or roots artist, rather than strictly blues. But one thing is for sure. His is an authentic voice of experience from the American heartland.

John Apice, of No Depression wrote in March 2013, "This album is – let’s call it Donna’s ‘Nebraska.’ Like Bruce Springsteen it’s far more personal, a little more laid back than the previous album… Most artists wait a lifetime to write one as good as this. Donna Dean’s music sparkles and sparkles and stays with you even when it’s not playing anymore. These songs light off each other continuously and remain lit because they make that kind of impression. Donna Dean is far closer to the traditions of an Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Rhonda Vincent, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Martha Wainwright (and she’s from Canada), than the country artists who are beginning to sound more like commercial pop music. TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS have a unique claim to fame: Tracy Newman has both an Emmy and Peabody Award. She grew up in Los Angeles, started playing guitar at 14, usually sitting on the diving board of her family’s pool, strumming for hours each day. She was, for a time, the youngest member of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. Later, she stopped attending college and began busking. In the early 70s, she joined an improv class taught by Gary Austin, which soon became The Groundlings. Tracy is a founding member, and besides performing, she taught and directed. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered by Lorne Michaels for “Saturday Night Live.” Some other Groundling alumni include: Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens and Kathy Griffin. The Groundlings brought Tracy to her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. Their first staff job was on “Cheers,” followed by “Bob” (Bob Newhart), “The Nanny,” “Ellen,” “The Drew Carey Show,” and the legendary “Hiller and Diller.” In 1997, Newman and Stark won an Emmy and Peabody Award for writing the groundbreaking “coming out” episode of “Ellen.”In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, "According to Jim," which ran for eight seasons. Her 2007 debut CD, “A Place in the Sun,” debuted on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” so it’s always been one of our favorites. These days, she tours her new CD, “I Just See You.” Joining Tracy are Tara Sitser, Barrett Tagliarino, Jime Van Booven and Tracy Newman II. More at www.tracynewman.com

1-3 pm "SEED FREEDOM and SYSTEMS OF ABUNDANCE" by Dr. Vandana Shiva, Quantum Physicst, Environmental Activist and Author, at Mudtown Farms, WLCAC Phonix Hall, 10950 South Central Los Angeles 90002.
+
What's really going on with Monsanto and "frankenfood"?
+
Reminding us that the small farmer's rights are inherently connected to the future of our world, Dr. Vandana Shiva brings front center the small farmers role in the issue of food security.
+
In an age where multinationals control entire sectors of the seed, food and pharmaceutical industries; Shiva is a leader who exposes intellectual property abuse in the form of biopiracy, whereby entire plants native to the developing world are patented. She was instrumental in the success of the Basmati Patent lawsuit against Ricetec in the US Supreme Court, and the Neem Patent lawsuit against W.R. Grace Co. in the European Patent Office.
+
Shiva has stressed that Free Trade in global agriculture is being pursued with little regard to the generators and preservers of Food and Food Culture. Traditional knowledge in agriculture, which is by nature, oral, has been passed on from one generation to the next. It has been integral to the survival of the human race. It cannot now be patented by unscrupulous corporations.
+
Her insight into the farmer's contribution as plant breeders, seed savers, and keepers of oral traditions in food preparation and artisanal processing are vital to creating a movement that embodies a philosophy of knowledge in traditional practices.
+
Shiva learned in her childhood, growing up in the Himalayan foothills of India, working side by side with the local village women of "Chpko" movement who beleived in the sagacity of their traditional knowledge that sanctifies the nurturing values of their forests. Their successful efforts to bring about a moratorium on logging of the forests that sustained indigeneous life set a learning ground for Shiva and demonstrated the power of grassroots.

The night will feature an observance in memory of the late KAREN BLACK, a Grassroots Acoustica troupe member. Series founder MARK ISLAM says, “After hoping for miracles, we're saddened to have lost Karen Black to cancer in early August. Many will remember the Oscar nominee & two-time Golden Globe winner for roles in landmark cinema – ‘Easy Rider,’ ‘Five Easy Pieces,’ Robert Altman's ‘Nashville,’ ‘The Day Of The Locust,’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’ -- but Karen was also a singer and songwriter who performed on Grassroots Acoustica's second show back in 2007, a fundraiser for The Blank Theatre which had produced a play she'd written called ‘Missouri Waltz.’ Over the years she'd been keen to return to Grassroots Acoustica but we could never find a suitable date. We send our deepest condolences to her husband Stephen Eckelberry, her family, friends, colleagues and fans around the world.”
+
August reunited Grassroots Acoustica with troupe members they haven't seen in a few years and it raised $1006 to help “Children Of The Night” rescue teenagers from the ravages of human trafficking. This is always a good show for a good cause, different each time.

“You can call him a traditionalist. But we won’t. You can call him nostalgic. But we won’t. He is Frank Fairfield. A musician. A banjo picker. A fiddle hummer. A song singer. We’ve heard him described as someone who was discovered at a farmers market out in California, as if he were some long lost treasure in a mythical land. As we see it, it isn’t some deep yearning for a time long forgotten that drives Frank Fairfield. He isn’t trying to be something that no longer exists, because in fact, he DOES exist. The music he plays, creates, and performs is the music that carried all of us, from all over the world, to the place (wherever that place may be) we are now. He plays the American landscape, the one he himself sees and experiences.” – From the Folk Music Center.

MUSICAL play with Appalachian mountain music,
in L.A.:
8 pm OPENING NIGHT of the West Coast premiere of “THE BURNT PART BOYS,” a coming-of-age musical set in a West Virginia mining town, features a soaring Appalachian-inspired score, at the Third Street Theatre, 8115 W 3rd St, Los Angeles 90048; reservations, 323-655-9232 or www.thirdstreettheatre.org
+
Adventure and redemption are at the heart of this new musical inflected with the rich musical sounds of the Appalachia region. Richard Israel directs an unforgettable coming-of-age story that follows a group of teenagers in West Virginia's coal country on their life-altering journey to “the burnt part” –the section of the coal mine that took their fathers’ lives. Musical director Gregory Nabours shepherds the vocally complex score inflected with the rich acoustic sounds of rural Appalachia. Book by Mariana Elder, music by Chris Miller, lyrics by Nathan Tysen. Opens Sep 14 at Third Street Theatre.
+
“The Burnt Part Boys is an engrossing story in which a group of friends goes up a mountain as kids, but comes back down as adults,” says Israel. “By setting the story in the West Virginia coalmines of the early 1960s, the creators look at the American idea of expectation versus aspiration – how we fulfill the life that has been set out for us, and what we do when the path our fathers took isn't necessarily the path we choose for ourselves.”
+
The Burnt Part Boys was a finalist for an American Theatre Critics New Play Award and received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award. It premiered Off-Broadway in 2010 as a co-production by Playwrights Horizons and Vineyard Theatre in 2010, receiving a Lucille Lortel nomination for Best Musical. Variety called The Burnt Part Boys “an adventurous, innovative and gripping musical,” and the The New York Times wrote “the spirit of youthful high jinks recall[s] the exploits of Mark Twain’s beloved roughhousers, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.”
+
Composer Chris Miller and lyricist Nathan Tysen started collaborating in 1999 at New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. In addition to The Burnt Part Boys, they have written the scores to Fugitive Songs (2008 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Revue) and the current Broadway-bound adaptation of the popular novel Tuck Everlasting. Other work includes a song for the revue Stars of David; commissions from Lincoln Center Theater and Playwrights Horizons/Theatreworks Silicon Valley; and an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Boston Globe Top Ten Pick of 2008). Their television work includes songs for Sesame Street (2012 Daytime Emmy Award) and The Electric Company.
+
Gregory Nabours’ musical director credits include The Color Purple (Ovation, LADCC and LA Weekly Awards for Best Musical Direction), Justin Love, Falsettos, Having It All, The Women of Brewster Place, Thoroughly Modern Millie, A New Brain, Spring Awakening, Into the Woods, Assassins, The Full Monty and Rent. Gregory's original song cycle, The Trouble With Words, debuted in 2011 and was awarded the Ovation Award for Best Music and Lyrics for an Original Musical, as well as Best Musical at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Gregory is the resident composer and music director for the Coeurage Theatre Company and can be seen weekly playing for Ryan Black's 88’s Cabaret.
+
The Burnt Part Boys runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm, Sep 14 through Oct 20. Tickets range from $29-$34 (reserved seating); children age 16 and under are $15 with purchase of an adult ticket – for that, use promo code KIDS.

I'm sure Cowboy Christian Vale will blend in just fine with the locals. He's a little nervous about the trip, he's used to busting horses, but he never broke a camel before. He said he's willing to try it for our country. Also, question for you: Camel Spiders can jump five feet in the air -myth right? Please tell me it is...
+
“Before I leave, I'm doing one last Los Angeles show. Cowboy Christian Vale will be opening for me. I'll be finishing up the Genghis show as myself -- with a possible new song or two. And I'll be collecting any messages or trinkets you'd like delivered to the troops. And just in case things don't go well, I know what I want people to say at my funeral – ‘Hey look, he's moving.’ Come join me for some fun.”

A songwriter's songwriter, Donna Dean has won multiple APRA and Tui awards for her songwriting and record production, recording with Russell Smith & the Amazing Rhythm Aces, working with the likes of Jimmy Webb and Don McLean, and writing the title track to Rhonda Vincent’s 2010 Grammy nominated bluegrass album, “Destination Life.” Her Tui Award nominated album, "Tyre Tracks & Broken Hearts," is full of stories that find their voices within the cracks in the pavement, not on the main highway but on the backroads where most of us live our lives. It features legendary guitarists Amos Garrett and Albert Lee along with Texas pickers Redd Volkaert and Gurf Morlix.
+
The proof is in the music. Donna is one of the best country singers not from the United States. She remains an artist the naïve American country media (and audience maybe) have yet to discover. And this is despite a slow concentrated build in popularity by the ears who have been fortunate to hear this marvelous voice."

Sun, Sep 15, near Ojai:
4 pm YVES LAMBERT TRIO, plus RIVERA-SUNNARBORG DUO opening, at Dancing Oak Ranch on the Casitas Pass Road. For directions or advance tickets, go to: ojaiconcertseries.com.
+
The YVES LAMBERT TRIO is being called "A breath of fresh and happy air on the Québécois music scene."
+
In 1976, Yves Lambert helped form (the now legendary) ‘La Bottine Souriante’, a Quebec folk band specializing in traditional Québécois music with a modern twist, helping them generate a huge following up and down the east coast. In 2003, this charismatic singer and accordionist, bubbling with ideas, charisma and enthusiasm, left the band and joined-up with multi-instrumentalist Tommy Gauthier and Olivier Rondeau from the (equally famous) Bébert Orchestra, to assert a new identity.
+
By combining the festive music that Yves had been steeped in for 25 years, with dance tunes that played constantly in his head, and often unknown poetic songwriters, he has created a Québécois sound all his own.
+
It's deemed a "startling innovation on the traditional French Canadian music scene" and it has captivated a whole new generation of fans. For ten years it has not ceased to amaze audiences and critics alike.
+
After a decade of touring together and producing three nationally-acclaimed albums in Canada, the Yves Lambert Trio offers a personal and creative interpretation of traditional Québécois repertoire. With compositions and arrangements composed by Gauthier and Rondeau, Yves creates a sound full of prowess and ingenuity. On stage, the swries hosts assure us, "they deliver a personal, touching and memorable musical experience that will stick in you mind and heart long after you are home and tucked into bed. The Yves Lambert Trio will captivate and amaze you!"
+
Plus...
RIVERA-SUNNARBORG DUO open the show at 4 pm. Hekar Rivera is a master on the violin and has toured with Los Fugitivos, an internationally-known Rock en Espanol act. When he’s not playing he runs Hekar Rivera Productions, a state-of-the-art musical production and instruction facility.
+
Steven Sunnarborg was lead guitarist of several heavy metal bands in Hollywood in the 1970s and ‘80s, and has played at the legendary Roxy and Whiskey-A-Go-Go. These days he tours with Hekar and teaches guitar, bass guitar and songwriting at his own local business, “Ventura Guitar Academy”.
+
The Rivera-Sunnarborg Duo has composed, performed and recorded music for the Rubicon Theater Company, winning the "Garland Award" from Backstage West for Original Music, and the duo has numerous other composition credits.
+
They perform original tunes as well as interpretations of jazz, rock and classical standards, all influenced by their classical training, gypsy rhythms, and heavy metal. Their surprising arrangements run the gamut from Bach’s "Air on a G String" to Guns n Roses’ "Sweet Child of Mine." They play with passion, precision and wit.
+
Hosts Shane & Kelli Butler say, "Our summer shows always include a potluck, so bring a dish to share and have a picnic with friends, family, and the band members on the grass under the oaks. We supply the cups, plates, juice, coffee & water, but it’s B-Y-O-B if you want anything stronger (remember, you’ll still have to drive home, so please drink responsibly). Bring a low-back deck chair, a blanket, a jacket for cooler weather, plus a small flashlight to help find your vehicle after the show and you can even bring friendly, well behaved dogs on a leash."
+
Gates open at 3 pm, opening act at 4, Yves Lambert Trio at 5. More info, call Shane, at 805-665-8852.

5:30-9 pm Weekly "GRAND OLE ECHO" Americana / alt country / honky-tonk showcase nears the end of its season and brings performances by THE GIMME 5's, CHRIS LATERZO & BUFFALO ROBE, CASEY NEILL, THE NORWAY RATS, and THE SUNDAY MORNING SINNERS, at The Echo, 1822 Sunset Bl, Echo Park 90026; 213-413-8200.
+
Here’s the lowdown on the hoedown, to use a David Serby expression:
+
THE GIMME 5's are four musicians that play with various bands and singer-songwriters based in L.A. and elsewhere. The band came together to play instrumental soul music much in the style of the great Memphis rhythm sections. They are Rick Holmstrom, guitar; Jason Borger, Hammond organ; Rob Douglas, bass guitar; Derek Brown, drums. More at www.facebook.com/thegimme5s
+
CHRIS LATERZO & BUFFALO ROBE are led by Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Chris Laterzo, who has recorded a number of well-received albums since arriving in California. Originally from Colorado’s Front Range and with roots in such varying places as Belgium, Massachusetts, Santa Fe, and Washington, D.C., Laterzo is an artist who emphasizes melody and lyric, and whose music evokes a sense of the restless spirit and open road. Chris Laterzo’s style of music is best described as folk-rock, alt-country- even American cowboy rock. More at www.chrislaterzo.com

CASEY NEILL & THE NORWAY RATS walk the line between lyrical song craft and ferocious electric live shows. His new album, “Goodbye to the Rank and File” ups the ante, bringing the power of his stage performances into the studio like never before. This is the first recording to feature the full Norway Rats lineup which includes members of the DECEMBERISTS, LUCINDA WILLIAMS BAND, THE EELS and MINUS 5 -- Little Sue (vocals, acoustic guitar), Chet Lyster (guitar), Ezra Holbrook (drums), Hanz Araki (vocals, flute), Jesse Emerson (bass), and Jenny Conlee (piano, accordion). “Goodbye to the Rank and File” was recorded throughout the fall of 2009 & the winter 2010 with help from friends like R.E.M. touring musician Scott McCaughey & Talkdemonic's Lisa Molinaro, and produced by Ezra Holbrook. The final result combines post-punk energy, narrative storytelling, haunting ballads, and whiskey-fueled rave-ups with clear-cut influences by Richard Thompson as well as Hüsker Dü and The Clash. THE SUNDAY MORNING SINNERS, when they're not preachin' to the choir, can be found sidled up to the bar -- a beer in one hand and the Good Book in the other. While paying homage to the late-greats of the Grand Ole Opry, the Sinners mash-up their punk, pop, and surf influences to create their own brand of American country rock. This band proves that not all modern country musicians have given up on their roots or their sense of humor. The bar has been raised, and they put their drinks on it. Comprised of members of Trucker Up!, Swamp Zombies, The Curb Hounds and The Tiki Tones, The Sunday Morning Sinners are proud to introduce the effervescent and always lovely Loretta Schwinn on her first country music recording endeavor. Sat, Sep 21, in SFV (North Hills):
7 pm THE TALL MEN GROUP plays the Stardust Concerts series in North Hills. Reservations get directions at at stardustconcerts@gmail.com
+
TALL MEN GROUP brings together six of the finest singer-songwriters in Los Angeles. Severin Browne, Edward Tree, Jimmy "Muffin" Yessian, Marty Axelrod, Jeff Kossack and John Stowers have been meeting once a month since 2012 to enjoy Jimmy's cooking (a lot!) and bring in songs written to a new theme each month. The very best of those songs are arranged for the band, then included in the stage show.
+
The Tall Men show is rich with brotherly rapport, crafted harmonies, stories and musicianship. But that's only the "icing". The "cake" is songwriting at a very high level -- accessible, fresh, original, often funny, always moving. Audiences from Oregon to San Diego rave that "every song is a gem".
+
Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7. Potluck drinks and snacks appreciated.

Sat, Sep 21, in NoHo:
Time tba LAUREN ADAMS plays a set at Bob's Espresso in NoHo. She tells us, "Finally, I'll get to meet 'Damon' from 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' I need those tickets to Cheap Trick!" No doubt the mysteries inherent in all that will be solved by Lauren at this show.
+
The press (including the Guide) likes Lauren and her music:
+
"LAUREN ADAMS BAND: This is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS, to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion, and MARK “POCKET” GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S 'Evangeline' with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song 'Thirsty,' title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly 'Americana Music Circle' showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." -- Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
+
"One listen and I was hooked. Superb, intelligent, thought-provoking songs. Real songs for real people wrapped in melodies that, promise to capture, inspire and pull the listener in again and again. Songwriters of Lauren Adams' level are few and far between." -- LAURIE JOULIE, Take Back Country Magazine.
+
"Lauren Adams has A CD here that is infectious, the lyrics and sweet melodies along with some sweet slide work make you want to keep listening, a very well done recording." -- Jim Moulton, Country Stars Online.

6 pm "BOB MORLEY’S BARN HOOT" brings a rare full-set concert appearance by Trough Records recording artist MARK HUMPHREYS, accompanied by guitarist JOHN-MICHAEL KAYE and bassist TIM CUPPS, plus the songs and stories of BOB MORLEY opening, in a lovely setting in the hills above the San Gabriel Valley in Covina 91724. Reservations get directions by email to smearman_322@yahoo.com
+
This is that "sleeper" show you're always seeking, the one you'll brag about to friends because you were there. MARK HUMPHREYS is a wonderful performing songwriter.
+
He spent the '90s criss-crossing the map of North America, playing every folk venue you've ever heard of, and many you haven't. He was a true troubadour and pioneer of the acoustic renaissance, even before he founded the multi-artist co-op label, Trough Records. But these days, a high-power job makes his live performances -- especially a full-set concert appearance -- precious and rare. Southern California-based singer-songwriter MARK HUMPHREYS has marvelous originals that should have been iconic hits, and a fine voice that delivers them. He's that good. If you've never heard him, don't miss this chance. If you have heard him, you're already making reservations.
+
Opening and hosting the evening is singer-songwriter-storyteller BOB MORLEY.
+
There is NO SET-PRICE ADMISSION for this concert, plus, it is a POTLUCK. "So," Mark tells the Guide, "all you need to bring is something to eat – it can be as fancy or as simple (or somewhere in-between) as you like – a leg of lamb or a twelve pack of soda; a casserole or a bag of potato chips – whatever you like - and everybody gets dinner and a show. And it's FAMILY FRIENDLY - so bring everybody!"
+
It's music, then dinner, then music. Bob Morley opens the evening at 6 pm. Then dinner is served. After dinner, MARK HUMPHREYS performs.
+
Voluntary donations will be accepted at the end of the evening.

THE GREAT WAGON ROAD was an improved trail in Colonial America that crossed the Great Appalachian Valley from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and from there to Georgia. It was along this road that migrating English, Anglo-Irish and Scots-Irish as well as a smaller number of Germans traveled to settle the Southern and Eastern areas of the United States, bringing with them traditional musical forms that merged with the music of the Southern slaves to become Appalachian mountain music From Ulster to Nashville.

7 pm THE BILLS, that fabulous band from Vancouver Island, play Matilija Auditorium, 703 El Paseo Dr, Ojai.
+
Canadian roots band THE BILLS return to the US for a highly anticipated tour, suppotring their new album “Yes Please” on Red House Records.
+
Their first album in seven years, this highly anticipated release follows their Juno Award-nominated Red House debut “Let ’Em Run” and proves that this virtuosic roots quintet is making “the most innovative original and traditional music in recent decades” -- Christian Science Monitor.
+
Known the world over for their exquisite songcraft, superb arrangements and dynamic live performances, The Bills feature an all-star line-up of talent from Canada's west coast, including Chris Frye (guitar, lead vocals), Marc Atkinson (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Adrian Dolan (fiddle, accordion, piano, vocals), Richard Moody (violin, viola, vocals) and Scott White (upright bass). All busy musicians, The Bills had been working on other musical projects until they recently reunited to record this new album.
+
“The Bills knew 2012 was the time to record,” says singer / guitarist Chris Frye. “With the imminent end of the world approaching, we had to lay down our song ‘Not the End’ and other new hits as quickly as we could! Not to mention the fact that fans of the band had been clamoring for new material for years.”
+
With their signature high energy performances and clever wit, The Bills do not disappoint fans on this long-awaited album. Yes Please features some of their finest collaborative songwriting to date, including the bluegrassy “Blackberry Ivy and Broom,” the Gypsy-flavored “Gale in My Sail,” the sea-faring song “Pandora’s in Flames” and of course, their rollicking anti-apocalypse song “Not the End.” Showing off their first-class musicianship, the album also features several instrumentals, including the Celtic-inspired “Scotch Bonnet” and Richard Moody’s melodic “The Gardenton Waltz.”
+
With twelve original compositions and one lush arrangement of a medley of gypsy-jazz ballads, these tracks draw all the beauty and energy you can imagine out of acoustic instruments and multi-layered vocal harmonies. Influenced in equal parts by Django Reinhardt, Sam Bush, Stan Rogers and Chopin, The Bills have crafted an album that appeals to acoustic music fans of all ages and styles--from bluegrass and gypsy jazz to classical and folk music from around the globe. When asked if they want another helping of The Bills’ tasty tunes and lively performances, folks everywhere can’t help but say “Yes Please!”
+
An enhanced CD with additional lyric booklet and other special content, “Yes Please” also includes a video of “Shining Face,” one of the fan favorites on the album.

+
Winston's latest solo piano release is "Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2" -- A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit (2012). Since 1972 he has released 12 other solo piano albums.
+
In 2001 Winston released "Remembrance -- A Memorial Benefit," a six-song CD of piano, guitar, and harmonica solos to benefit those affected by 9/11. He also worked with the late George Levenson of "Informed Democracy" on three projects: a solo guitar soundtrack for "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" and soundtracks of piano, guitar, and harmonica solos for "Pumpkin Circle" and "Bread Comes to Life." In 1984, he did the solo piano soundtrack for the children's story "The Velveteen Rabbit" for Rabbit Ears Productions.

+
Additionally, Winston is working on solo guitar and recording the masters of Hawaiian slack key guitar (named for the beautiful solo finger-style guitar tradition unique to Hawaii) for an extensive series of albums for Dancing Cat Records. He is also recording his main inspirations for his harmonica playing: Sam Hinton, Rick Epping, and Curt Bouterse.
+
Still, he mostly known as a pianist. Winston plays Steinway pianos.

8 pm HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN plays the Smothers Theatre, Pepperdine University 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.
+
"If rosin were flammable, violinist Elana [James] would be charged with arson." --ink19.com
+
Hot Club of Cowtown, the Austin-based band has grown to be the most globetrotting, hard-swinging Western swing trio on the planet. Hot Club of Cowtown has created an international cult following for its sizzling blend of hot jazz and Western swing inspired by its namesakes: "Hot Club" from Reinhardt and Grappelli's Quintette du Hot Club de France, and "Cowtown" from the influence of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys.
+
With appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and at the Grand Ole Opry, the group has both critics and audiences alike raving. The Onion's A. V. Club wrote,"Hot Club of Cowtown sounds like it's spent the last 40 years in tiny rural clubs," whileThe Times (London) remarked,"Unfussy and unpretentious, their blend of down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation harks back to a lost era of so-called western swing. When they plunge into 'Orange Blossom Special' your thoughts turn not so much to runaway trains as to a B-52 tearing up a runway."
+
The band's members are Elana James, fiddle and vocals; Whit Smith, guitar and vocals; and Jake Erwin, bass and vocals. Its latest album, Rendezvous in Rhythm, was released earlier this year on Gold Strike Records.
+
Elana James grew up in Prairie Village,Kansas, and began playing Suzuki violin at age four. It took her almost 20 years to decide between the violin and the fiddle, but in her mid-20s, after much soul-searching,she found her calling in American roots music and has never looked back.
+
In 2006,performing with the Hot Club of Cowtown, she had the honor of representing the US State Department as a musical ambassador throughout Georgia,Armenia, and Azerbaijan, playing everything from Texas hoedowns to American Songbook standards.
+
In 2005 she became the first dedicated female instrumentalist in Bob Dylan's touring band in more than 30 years, then toured with him in 2006 as the opening act for his US summer tour. In addition to tours and recording with Dylan, she has also recorded with Willie Nelson,Ray Price, and Merle Haggard,to name a few. In 2004 she was inducted, along with her Hot Club bandmates, into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame.
+
Whit Smith was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, and spent his earliest years in New Canaan,Connecticut, and later Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Born to musical parents, Smith was exposed right away to a life of practicing and performing.
+
Born in 1974,upright bassist Jake Erwin hails from Tulsa,Oklahoma, location of the legendary Cain's Ballroom, home of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. He took an interest in American roots music at an early age and decided to explore its variations through the sound of the double bass.
+
He has become one of the country's premier practitioners of percussive "slap bass," a style begun in early New Orleans jazz that continues through country, blues, and even rock 'n' roll today.
+
Erwin has been inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame (one of the youngest members ever) and been a featured performer (with the Hot Club of Cowtown) on A Prairie Home Companion,Mountain Stage, Later...with Jools Holland on BBC television, and at World Cafe Live, the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, the Smithsonian Institution,Jazz at Lincoln Center,Midsummer Night's Swing (also at Lincoln Center),to name a few,and he has toured with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, the Mavericks, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
+
In addition to the Hot Club of Cowtown, he has had the honor of recording and playing with some of Texas' finest performers and songwriters, including Wayne Hancock, Ronnie Dawson ,the Asylum Street Spankers, Max Stalling, and Kim Lenz.

Thu, Oct 10, in Malibu:
8 pm ROGER McGUINN and MARTY STUART with THE FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES play the “President's Choice Series” at Pepperdine University Center for the Arts, in the Smothers Theatre, Pepperdine University 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA
+
Folk-rock music icon Roger McGuinn teams up with country music singer-songwriter Marty Stuart and his band, the Fabulous Superlatives, to perform such classics as "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Eight Miles High," and "Turn,Turn, Turn."
+
McGuinn and Stuart are an unbeatable combination, but for guitar fans the show offers even more. While it may not be a Byrds reunion,it's a reunion of sorts as McGuinn's signature 12-string Rickenbacker guitar blends again with Stuart's B-Bender guitar.
+
Stuart's well-known B-Bender started life as a 1954 Fender Telecaster and was the main electric "axe" of legendary country-rock pioneer Clarence White of The Byrds. White and multi-instrumentalist Gene Parsons fashioned a steel-guitar-inspired mechanism that raised the B string a whole step when downward pressure was applied on the strap and the string was "bent." White used the guitar almost exclusively until his untimely end in 1973; its distinctive sound is heard blending seamlessly with McGuinn's 12-string on many Byrds recordings.
+
After White's passing, the "Clarence White Tele" sat unused at his home in Kentucky until his widow,Suzy, contacted Stuart. "The guitar really found me," recalls Stuart. "Roland White, Clarence's brother, got me my gig with Lester Flatt, and I was friends with the family. The guitar already had a following of its own by that time -- I was always fascinated by it, lusted after it,and I'd even had a similar bender put in another guitar to try and duplicate the effect.
+
"I've never considered it my guitar, really. It's his,and now it kind of has a life of its own. The spring gets dry and squeaks,so I spray WD-40 on it now and then, but I've never cleaned it. All the dirt inside and behind the strings is the original dirt. We call it 'Clarence.'"
+
For many who hear the name Roger McGuinn, the first thing that comes to mind is that unmistakable Rickenbacker 12-string guitar. McGuinn has been associated with the guitar since his earliest days as a member of The Byrds. McGuinn has played other electric guitars over the years and is also known as an acoustic folk artist of considerable magnitude, but he still remains the undisputed "King of the Rick 12." When he started playing it, McGuinn couldn't have known that the 12-string Rickenbacker would become his signature sound.
+
"We went as a group to see A Hard Day's Night multiple times and were totally taken with The Beatles," says McGuinn. "I liked George Harrison's Rickenbacker 12,but I couldn't find one that looked like his with the pointy cutaways,so I bought the blonde 360 model. I thought it was beautiful, like a golden palomino, and the checkerboard binding reminded me of Gene Autry or Roy Rogers. I loved that guitar and played it eight hours a day. It was later stolen and I discovered that it was auctioned off in England for over $100,000. Given the statute of limitations and the difficulty in dealing with laws in a foreign country, there wasn't much I could do,even though I considered myself the legal and rightful owner."
+
The signature sound continued, however, and a new 12-string took that guitar's place. Now --so many years later -- two men ,two guitars, and a full band are making music together again.

9 pm ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS play "a live performance of his hits, old and new," at the Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Bl, Beverly Hills,
+
Wait. He's a hard-core rocker, right? There's that blurry Americana line again. Remember "House of the Rising Sun"-? No Depression says, "Eric Burdon is back, bigger and better than ever. It’s about time, for him and for us."
+
American Songwriter magazine writes, "[Eric Burdon's] voice is gruffly wizened but still unmistakably the person who mesmerized '60s youngsters singing 'House of the Rising Sun' with booming angst. With a top notch band behind him led by co-producer/drummer Tony Braunagel and a batch of pretty good rockers that reflect on a life filled with more ups and downs than most of us will ever experience, this is a well-earned victory lap. Eric Burdon’s river is far from running dry."
+
Eric Burdon wraps-up the summer leg of his hectic and ongoing World Tour that includes the "Bumbershoot Festival" in Seattle and this one stop in L.A.
+
Some of music's most articulate voices, from Bruce Springsteen to Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, have cited his strong influence upon their work.
+
Earlier this year, Eric released "'Til Your River Runs Dry," (on ABKCO) heralded as his most personal album to date. It has been met with critical acclaim worldwide and is making an impact on AAA radio. Hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” Eric Burdon has long been a groundbreaker while maintaining a commanding presence in music with the Animals, with WAR and simply as Eric Burdon.
