Jordan Sollitto put himself through the University of Arizona singing covers in Tucson nightclubs…but that was a long, long time ago. Then followed 30 years of corporate servitude that left precious little time for anything other than inter-divisional synergy, sales meetings and - more thankfully - a wonderful family. Recently, like a singing Rip Van Winkle, he emerged from his musical slumber and began playing anew. Recalls the legendary Herb Pedersen, “Jordan came to me a few years back as a weekend strummer looking to polish his technique. Next thing you know he started writing tunes and it was like a damn broke…with a lot of really fine music rushing out.” Take a break from the annual September heat wave in the air conditioned comfort of the Coffee Gallery and enjoy a matinee concert of original songs that span a broad spectrum between country, folk, bluegrass and rock, punctuated by tall tales the likes of which can ONLY emanate from a guy in a business suit. Sitting in for this show will be Pedersen and Bill Bryson, whose musical resumes intersected in the Desert Rose Band and Laurel Canyon Ramblers and also include the Bluegrass Cardinals as well as studio and touring tenures with the likes of John Denver, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne and Dan Fogelberg. “I'll pay you back if you don't enjoy yourself,” declares Sollitto. “And you can trust me…I'm in senior management.”

The Late Bloomers -- Dan Ames, Gayle Bluemel, Ross (Debe) Johnsen, and Scott Shepherd -- are an acoustic folk-rock band with some intriguing originals. Now two married couples, they cut their teeth on the music of Dylan and Neil Young while still in high school in the sixties and have since found their own sound by putting their individual stamp on favorites from that era. All four are accomplished vocalists and pleasing harmonies dominate the sets. Dan is a singer-songwriter, with a gentle guitar style that he has carried over to the dobro and pedal steel, and Gayle, his wife, plays the keyboard for the group. Debe, the other passionate singer-songwriter, plays guitar and bass and Scott rounds out the instrumentals with his mandolin and driving blues harmonica. They have individually been part of the Pasadena and LA music scene for many years and have played with other bands such as Smokewood, Touch Candy, The Shakin’ Snakes, Blind Ross, RetroActive, and Accelerator and are now enjoying their collaboration as The Late Bloomers.

+
Kevin Burton Smith, Butler's Coffee "Music Guy" says, "There may be a crossfire hurricane raging outside, but this Saturday, Butler's Coffee is opting for a quiet storm of intelligence, reason and passion instead, as we present an evening of thoughtful and uplifting acoustic music by two performers who don't need a sledge hammer to drive a point home."
+
Michael Gabriel is a seeker offering-up a worldwide perspective and a global vision that somehow never loses the intimacy of a one-on-one encounter. Whether he's accompanying himself with his trusty guitar, offering up a hushed lover's confession, or serving-up an orchestral swirl of sound, this well-travelled singer-songwriter's innate sense of melody and gently probing lyrics tap directly into the secret heart of all those things that unite us, while not being shy about railing against those things that would tear us apart."
+
"And then," he continues, "Elayna, the Antelope Valley's First Lady of Folk, will be taking the stage to weave her own musical and magical spell. Accompanied by her faithful companion Dave 'The Stringwalker' Sprowl, Elayna offers up a decades-spanning amazing journey of spot-on originals and classy covers so personalized and heartfelt that they might as well be originals; a savvy, smart and deceptively mellow blend of Summer-of-Love optimism and punk-like fire; a hymn to humanity you're all welcome to join in on. Turn your heart up to eleven and come see what we mean."

Sat, Sep 7, in Arcadia:
7:30 pm PASADENA POPS presents a "MICHAEL FEINSTEIN: THE GERSHWINS AND ME," at their summer outdoor concert series at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, on Baldwin Av, just S of the 210 Fwy in Arcadia.
+
Principal Conductor MICHAEL FEINSTEIN says, "It will be my great joy to present a unique and singular program devoted to the works of George and Ira Gershwin."
+
He continues, "The selections will range from well-known standards to some delicious rarities that I hope will delight our listeners, for it is a rare experience to have the perfect combination of orchestra, guest soloists, audience and venue to present what I hope will be a fresh and memorable celebration of these treasured artists."
+
He offers some details: "The dazzling Overture" from the 1945 film, "Rhapsody," will lead-off the proceedings "in a lush and energetic medley arranged by Ray Heindorf -- a ten-minute opus that is a true orchestral showcase," asserts Feinstein.
+
He adds, "There will also be Nelson Riddle settings of Gershwin instrumentals, plus a selection of his peerless arrangements for Ella Fitzgerald, unheard publicly for decades; arrangements that typify the timeless quality that the Gershwin works themselves represent."
+
But that's not all. "An unknown miniature (that I discovered in the late '70s) called, 'Japanese,' will also be performed. Add to that some original charts by the equally legendary Conrad Salinger, written for the 1956 Paramount film, 'Funny Face,' a swing chart of 'That Certain Feeling,' penned for Bob Hope; along with fresh presentations of music from 'Porgy and Bess,' and other Gershwin shows including 'Of Thee I Sing' and 'Strike Up The Band.'
+
Plus, the evening will feature unexpected guests. Feinstein reveals, "The JPL Chorus will render a charming retro-sixties swing rendition of 'I Got Rhythm' (arranged by George Bassman), and the original ballet music form the Astaire/Rogers film, 'Shall We Dance,' will be played, too. Our guest vocalists are stage and television star TOM WOPAT, a particularly wonderful singer of American Popular music, and CATHERINE RUSSELL, who is highly acclaimed for her recent jazz recordings of standards, and for her way with a lyric. She is one of my favorite singers."
+
Feinstein entreats, "Please do join us for all of this and more, as it is a once in a lifetime chance to hear this music played by the great Pasadena Pops along with my personal commentary about the selections. I hope you'll want to be there, as it won't happen like this again!"

Some would say that Matt's unassuming baby-faced slacker image and "nice guy" blue-collar charm belie a very complex and intoxicating energy that is equal parts gritty neo-folk, frenetic boyish pulse, and tangled life experience, all held cohesive by his deft guitar skills and liquid vocals, which are reminiscent of a young Dio wrapped around a Tom Waynes heart. Legendary blues and jazz vocalist Barbara Morrison is joined today by Stu Elster on piano, Richard Simon on bass, and Lee Spath on drums.

While the blues is unquestionably her forte,
Morrison seems equally at home in a broad range of idioms, from pop to R&B to the blues. Morrison has been compared to some of the greatest female jazz and blues singers. Her singing has been described as “soul stirring, sizzling,” her style, “graceful,” her pacing, “flawless.”

Originally from Detroit, Barbara Morrison’s twenty-year career as a performer and recording artist includes appearances worldwide with some of the greatest names in jazz: Ray Brown, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Collette, Joe Williams, Gerald Wiggins, Jimmy Witherspoon, Hank Crawford, Eddie Harris, Nancy Wilson, David T. Walker and Jimmy Smith. She has performed in such highly regarded venues as Carnegie Hall, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Bern Jazz Festival and the Playboy Jazz Festival. Morrison also toured Europe with Ray Charles.
+
The New York Times stated, “A joy, at Carnegie Hall, Barbara Morrison delivered one song a la Esther Phillips and another with Ella Fitzgerald’s blithe scat singing.”
+
In addition to teaching at UCLA, Morrison is teacher, founder and director of her own school of music in Inglewood, California, teaching beginning to advanced music, jazz / blues interpretation and history, acting and concert performing techniques. She has also worked closely with the late Dr. Beverly Robinson of the UCLA Theater Department, on productions of “For Colored Girls” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”

Two individual stars in one show. A two act party. Rebecca found national prominence when Adam Levine of Maroon 5 picked her for his team on the hit TV show, "The Voice's" first season; to date, she's received over 20,000 downloads on iTunes for the Nirvana song, "Come As You Are" that she sang on the show.
+
Rebecca garnered rave reviews for her high-energy performances, weaving together skillful, emotional songwriting, folk storytelling and whimsical comedy for the ADHD generation. She has a brand new CD called "Circus Heart," which is finding lots of national press and an amazing amount of airplay for an independent artist.

3-7 pm “CAJUN-ZYDECO DANCE” , with music by surprise performers from Louisiana, JESSE LEGE & JOEL SAVOY, with KELLI JONES-SAVOY, at the Golden Sails Hotel, 6285 E Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach 90803.
+
Real dancehall music from Southwest Louisiana. Jesse and Joel make music that’s full of spontaneity and joy. Together, they play Cajun dance hall music from the prairies of Southwest Louisiana where generations young and old alike come together to celebrate their vibrant culture by dancing, socializing and having a good time.
+
Jesse Lége is the real deal. Growing up in a rural, pre-electricity home in Gueydan, Louisiana, Jesse spoke Cajun French and learned music from relatives, neighbors, and the family's much-loved battery-powered radio. Today he is one of the most admired Cajun accordionists and vocalists in the world, known especially for his high, clear, “crying” vocals.
+
Joel Savoy is the son of Cajun royalty Ann and Marc Savoy and founder of Grammy wining Valcour records. In performance he represents his culture with an authority that few people his age can and his playing leaves no doubt that Cajun music is still very much alive.
+
Kelli Jones-Savoy must have spent a lot of time playing and singing around a campfire because her sensual voice evokes that same spiritual peace. She is a powerful force in the progressive music scene of Southwest Louisiana where she now lives, shining as a songwriter in Feufollet, and playing fiddle and singing in French in her all-girl Cajun trio Jolie Blonde et les Bassettes.

Sun, Sep 8, in Echo Park:
5:30-9 pm  Weekly "GRAND OLE ECHO" nears the end of its annual season with a FTEE abd strong show featuring THE FAR WEST, AMELIA WHITE, GWENDOLYN and her band,  and on the Back Porch Stage, the MODAL TEASE STRING BAND, at the Echo in Echo Park.
+
Plus, The Far West is making their set a music video shoot, so producers say, "Dress up, and come be immortalized on video! We gotta fill this place!"
+
THE FAR WEST has been called "Technically pure, slightly jaded, no-nonsense and honest with stellar storytelling for the every-man." The Far West formed in early 2010, each member having left other bands to pursue a sound they weren't getting elsewhere.
+
Robert Black, hailing from Texas, has played in dozens of bands from the plains to the coasts (in both directions). In his Texas days he backed a number of bands in all-day BBQ hoedowns and late-night jam sessions. He was even in a band that shared a bill with the late, great Townes Van Zandt.
+
In Los Angeles, after working as a session bassist for several L.A. bands, including Leslie & The Badgers, and West of Texas, Robert met singer Lee Briante, and that's a good short story.
+
Posting a simple craigslist ad that consisted of nothing more then a Waylon Jennings video, Lee Briante made contact with Robert Black when he was ready to start a project of his own. That's it? Enough to make you want to meet? Yep.
+
Lee Briante comes from the fertile Hudson Valley of NY, by way of the rolling hills of Western Mass. His parents instilled a deep love of music in him from a very early age, taking him to see what would eventually be called Americana music, from people like Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Charlie Daniels, and many others. Memories of rowdy irish bands burning through bow rosin in low-ceiling riverside taverns stand out in his mind. Lee has been playing in bands since he was 15 or so. Among others, he's played in the Northampton, MA ambient band Paris, the Boston band 1986, and the L.A.-based Queen Victoria.
+
James Williams, Keys, has played in Biirdie, the breakups, and SpongeBob SquarePants and the Hi-Seas. He has performed live on KTLA Morning News, KXLU, and KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" with Nick Harcourt. James has shared the bill with Mates of State, my ex-girlfriend's favorite band, thereby winning the breakup. His permanent medical records include the notation, "I drink cosmopolitans."
+
Chicago native Aaron found his true passion for music when he picked up his first guitar at fourteen. He's played as an integral part of the Chicago band Dorian Taj. Aaron has been seen playing with Clip Art, Dick Prall, The Eighth Grade, The After School Special, Hobo and Boxcar, Face for Radio, Coldcock Jones and the Sh*thawks, The Last Vegas, and Keith Scott.
+
On the drum perch, a California native and Los Angeles music scene stalwart, Travis Popichak. Travis is a hotly sought-after drummer in L.A., as much for his drumming as his unique and flamboyant style of dress. His mutton-chopped mug has been seen behind the kit for Paul Chesney, Leslie & The Badgers, Welldiggers Banquet, Ben Redell and many others.
+
In early 2013, The Far West began working with Mongrel Music Booking, a welcome reward for years of hard work. The Far West have been gigging all across Southern California and the southwest at places like El Rey, The Echo, The Satellite, Pappy & Harriets, Hotel Cafe, Cowboy Palace Saloon, Taix, Silverlake Lounge and many more venues.
+
They've been winning accolades all along the line from bands and critics in all kinds of genres.
+
The specific examples of their success are characteristic of L.A.'s mashup of Roots-Americana with other genres, and musuc audiences hunger for, and appreciation of it. In the summer of 2012, The Far West opened a sold-out JD McPherson show at The Echo, and a week later, a sold-out Nick 13 show at the 1,000 seat El Rey Theater.
+
Their debut album was recorded in Encinitas (CA) at the American Legion Post 416, which had become a familiar venue to them. The crew at the legion opened up the doors to the band, and over three days The Far West recorded their originals with he help of Engineer /  Producer Colin McLean. Done live-to-tape with minimal overdubs this record captures the live energy and beautiful tone of the Legion Post. The band is currently working on their 2nd album, pairing again with producer Colin McLean.
+
Grand Ole Echo producer Kim Grant sent us a review from "Californiality." Having heard the band ourselves, the Guide concurs with the following:
+
"Californiality is categorically labeling The Far West as 'the best L.A. country music act of 2011,' and here's why: The Far West takes country music where it should be by now in 2011 - technically pure, slightly jaded, no-nonsense and honest with stellar storytelling for the every-man.
+
"The songwriting, musicianship and production quality on The Far West album is superb, so nothing more needs to be said. It simply must be heard."
+
"The Far West have an authentically Americana sound that’s been described as something like Waylon’s band jamming with Wilco. Their songs are highly personal, introspective and original and portray a deep love of American music."
+
"Stopped by for a cold London's Pride and caught a set by L.A.'s The Far West. I've know bassist Robert Black for some time, but this was the first time I've really kicked back and absorbed a set of their material. Singer Lee Briante has a kind of rangy Sam Shepard quality to him. (Others have suggested a younger David Serby.) He sings in a kind of understated drawl that is a perfect fit for the material. And while I enjoyed the performance, I think it was the songwriting that really turned my head. Tunes like, 'I won't have that far to fall' and 'This is where I get off' are so expertly constructed classic country songs that you can't help but be drawn in by the storytelling. Robert chimes in at the perfect time with lazy harmonies and the whole thing sounds at the same time familiar and fresh. Guitarist / pedal steel master Erik Kristiansen is a pleasure and turns a phrase with style and taste. When it comes to sitting down and listening to some heartfelt country music I highly recommend these boys."

AMELIA WHITE was born and bred in Virginia to a native Virginian family, but she cut her musical teeth as a young adult in Boston.
+
“I could claim a Southern musical pedigree if I wanted -- my Grandpa played banjo on the porch every night -- but in reality my roots came from sneaking down to the basement to listen to my older brother’s records while Mom thought I was doing homework,” laughs Amelia. “The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, and early Elton John were my faves, and I was completely obsessed. I loved the songs where I couldn’t figure out exactly what it meant for a while, and slowly a mystery was revealed; it blew my mind.“
+
The young Amelia begged her brother to teach her guitar, and she proceeded to play it so much and so naturally that he sold her his 1968 Martin D-18 for twenty bucks of her allowance money. It’s still Amelia’s main guitar to this day.
+
The writing of original songs quickly followed. It was a steady stream that led her to her first money-making gigs in the subways of Boston, then into studios and venues around the country and the world. She says, “I’ve pretty much been writing songs and playing them for people ever since I can remember, it comes naturally to me, and I imagine I will do it until the day I die.”
+
It's no surprise that the title track of "BEAUTIFUL AND WILD," her fifth studio album, was written for another soul equally as driven by music, as he lay dying an untimely death in spring of 2009. Amelia met DUANE JARVIS, the spirited guitarist best known for his co-write with Lucinda Williams “Still I Long For Your Kiss” when she first moved to East Nashville in 2001. “He became a mentor and good friend,” says White. “We wrote together, he backed me up at times, and even when he was out on the road playing with everyone from Frank Black to John Prine, I could always call him if I felt down or discouraged about the business.”
+
The album is full of those kinds of tales where souls cross into the next world, and connections with saints and demons from realms beyond the physical are made. "Sidewalks" was penned during her visits one hot summer to Baptist Hospital, as a close family member suffered an untimely death. Amelia reflects, "When people you love pass away too early and too fast, it leaves you with a hole but also an obligation to live your life as best you can.”
+
"BEAUTIFUL AND WILD" also explores star-crossed, mismatched love. “I went through a bad break-up, and in Nashville when that happens everyone calls you up to write,” she laughs before turning serious. “I felt myself open to chaotic, fleeting love, the kind that can really sting. I found myself drawn to friends going through the same thing.”
+
In “Madeline” the love-struck narrator admits that, “the sidewalks of my mind are not the pretty kind, you should cross the street and let me be,” to his crush on a young innocent beauty. “Saint Christopher” finds the character so lost after loosing love that she is heading down the wrong road, and has to call on the patron saint of travelers.
+
The album ends with “Rider Ghost,” an emotional prayer sung through almost clenched teeth, and she says, “I wrote 'Rider Ghost' after trying to give up music, cause I felt so dark about the difficulty of getting it out into the cold hard world.” The passion in the vocals is visceral, and it is this kind of raw emotion that Amelia White brings to her audience.
+
"BEAUTIFUL AND WILD" was produced by Marco Giovino (Band Of Joy) in his newly minted studio, Dagotown Recorders, in East Nashville. Marco had drummed with White regionally for six years, and on his time off from touring and recording with Band of Joy, Norah Jones, and Rodney Crowell, he offered to produce an album for her. They hunkered down in the home studio in December 2010 when their favorite group of players were off the road and available to add their magic and enjoy Marco’s infamous snack spread.
+
The album has influences of The Beatles and Stones, and Neil Young, (perhaps a nod back to Amelia’s early musical discoveries), but it also has a sweet soft side reminiscent of early James Taylor with a hint of Virginia twang. The lyrics are more poetic than narrative, another nod back to her early influences. In the end it is distinctly Amelia White with her sinewy emotional voice and striking melodies that will stick long after the record has ended, beckoning one to come back again and again to the sounds of her East Nashville-inspired “Saxophone Trains.”
+
Alternate Root calls Amelia a “Nashville Treasure.” She lives and writes with others in town, but is no “Nashville hat act.” In a recent interview she describes herself as “Considerably more Neil Young than Taylor Swift.”
+
Maybe it is that left-of-center quality that draws other writers such as Lori McKenna, Tony Furtado, Tom Kimmel, and Bill Lloyd to collaborate with her. ANNE McCUE covered Amelia's song “Motorcycle Dream” on her recent album "Broken Promise Land."
+
Amelia’s discography begins in 1999 with "COMES AND GOES" produced by Tucker Martine (Laura Viers), followed by "BLUE SOUVENIRS" (2001), which was recorded at the legendary Fort Apache Studio B and is produced by Brian Brown (Juliana Hatfield). Both albums started a strong current, mostly by word of mouth. "Blue Souvenirs" found a spot on NPR’s “All Songs Considered,” and Amelia began the relentless touring through both the States and Europe.
+
After moving to Nashville, Amelia recorded "BLACK DOVES" with Neilson Hubbard (Kim Richey). This album exposed her further in the Americana / AAA / Roots world after getting picked up and promoted heavily by Funzalo Records. She appeared on radio's "E-TOWN," got steady non-commercial radio play, and songs got placed in several TV shows including a recent spot on FX’s "Justified." Critics loved the album, and the Song "Black Doves" was the subject of an entire blog post by Peter Blackstock in No Depression.
+
Neilson Hubbard returned to produce "MOTORCYCLE DREAM" followed as so often is the case by a split with her label Funzalo. The album had no promotional funding but that didn’t stop Amelia from touring behind it furiously, winning fans one by one. More at www.ameliawhite.com

GWENDOLYN is a California songwriter who achieves being unique -- that characteristic too many others claim and are not.
+
"Gwendolyn is playful and poignant, yet oddly magical," and wgen we heard that, the Guide's editor readily agreed. Her influences include The Incredible String Band, Nick Drake, Dolly Parton, The Moore Brothers, Bob Dylan and Syd Barrett.
+
Operating in a zone between nu-folk and indie sorta-rock, there are the weird and the traditional instruments, the adult-themed songs and the children's music, the film and TV soundtrack work, and the Celtic-themed songs she records in Scotland. If other artists aspire to unique, they should listen to Gwendolyn.
+
Gwendolyn often writes songs that inspire the mystery inside. Drawing from nature and a sense of spiritual responsibility, her lyrics form images that will inevitably lead you through that open-ended challenge: a search for self.
+
Gwendolyn's compositions push the boundaries of expected time changes and ordinary song structure, yet a welcome familiarity remains. Addressing divergent topics that include insects, sexuality, politics and heartbreak, Gwendolyn presents life as she sees it and her listeners are presented with a surprise, and ultimately, a treasure.
+
Her debut "ULTRASOUNDS" (Whispersquish, 2000) features songs recorded between 1995-1999, including the acclaimed childlike anthem, "Freedom of the Heart (Ooodily, Ooodily)," heard repeatedly in the cult film "CHUCK & BUCK" starring Mike White (Artisan, 2000).
+
Shortly after its release, Gwendolyn recruited friends whose instruments naturally lend themselves to her slightly left-of-center music. Musician Douglas Lee (Uva Ursi) returned home from living in New Orleans to build a glass harmonica - 26 different shaped wine glasses sonically tuned. Lee then added the saw and banjo to his repertoire. Jazz junkie Robert Petersen returned from Berkeley to contribute his warm upright bass. Rounding out the ensemble, Brandon Jay, aka Quazar (The 88), Quazar and the Bamboozled), acquired pots, pans, water bottles, gadgets and gizmos to form what's known as his "drum set." Gwendolyn decided to capture their harmonic chemistry live in the studio. She asked veteran players Smokey Hormel (Beck) and Ralph Carney (Tom Waits) to add their talent to the mix. The result is "DEW" (Whispersquish, 2003).
+
Producer Ben Vaughn (Ween, Arthur Alexander) brought Gwendolyn to Scotland to create a more traditional sounding folk album with the local musicians there. "LOWER MILL ROAD" (Whispersquish), named after the studio's whereabouts, celebrated it's release August 7, 2007. Gwendolyn captured the evening in the concert DVD "LOWER MILL ROAD - LIVE" (Whispersquish).
+
"BRIGHT LIGHT" follows Gwendolyn's pursuit of love, marriage and motherhood. A tribute to L.A.'s local country scene, Gwendolyn and producer Ethan Allen selected songs naturally lend themselves to the style. In addition to the core Gwendolyn band, the album features the musical talents of Josh Grange, Tony Gilkyson, Paul Lacques, Evo Bluestein, Cliff Wagner and Tim Weed. With harmonies sung by I See Hawks In LA and The Living Sisters.
+
You can hear Gwendolyn's signature sound on Showtime's hit comedy "WEEDS." Together, with her partner Brandon Jay, she created transitional cues and underscore for the show's seasons 2 through 8. They are simultaneously writing songs for "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion -- The Musical," and Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black." Gwendolyn has also released a number of cool albums for children (www.gwendolyn.net/gtg).
+
q
Adorning her hair with ribbons and draped in unusual and colorful vintage gowns, Gwendolyn is not your average indie rocker playing local rock clubs. The LA Weekly describes her performance, "like a Renaissance Fair being held on Mars" and awarded her "Best New Genre / Uncatergorizable Artist of 2003" at the L.A. Music Awards. Whether she's performing solo or with her band, Gwendolyn delights in leading her audience through a musical experience they will remember and a world they'll want to revisit. MODAL TEASE STRING BAND has been playing old tunes for new times since 2009. We grew out of the Los Angeles old time music scene, where folks meet regularly to jam and share tunes “around the campfire.” Our penchant for modal tunes brought us together, and our fascination with obscure, crooked fiddle and banjo tunes sealed the deal. While rooted in and respectful of old time traditions, we’re flexible, adventurous, and versatile. If it feels old, is foot-tappingly addictive, musically interesting, or begs for tight vocal harmonies, odds are we want to perform it. And so our motto is Music From Appalachia and Beyond. Modal Tease is made up of Belinda Thom on the Devil’s Box (fiddle), Cliff Latimer on guitar and mandolin, Jim Hamilton on clawhammer banjo, and Lawrence Ullman on standup bass. Recently, they won awards at the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Competition and the Goleta Old-Time Fiddlers Convention. In December 2011, they released their first CD, Aggravatin’ Beauty. RANCHERS FOR PEACE are a father-daughter duo from Cambria. They join a long tradition of folksingers, advocating for peace and justice. Think Everly Brothers meets Americana roots-rock, in a Woody Guthrie state of mind. Ranchers for Peace -- Charles and Ray Duncan -- create entwined vocal harmonies that blend to produce a sound where there ages and genders are indistinguishable. Ray's melodica and Charles's harmonica add even more layered harmonic tones. The duo garnered rave reviews for their showcase at this year's 25th Folk Alliance Conference in Toronto. Their current buzz tune,"Walkin' Around Black" -- written after Trayvon Martin's death -- has also created a solid impact. More at www.ranchersforpeace.com

ERIN INGLISH is California’s banjo sweetheart. A native of the Central Coast, Erin delivers a unique presentation of voice and banjo that is reminiscent of the sounds of John Hartford and the activist stylings of Peggy Seeger. Formerly a mechanical engineer in the field of sustainability, Erin now tours internationally as a folk music troubadour. She has lived in India, Madagascar, Bulgaria and Serbia, and her songwriting reflects her worldly travels and grounding passion for sustainability and art. In April,2013, Erin released her first solo album, “A Melody So Sweet,” and then toured – by bicycle – the entire coast of California, to celebrate Earth Month. Angelo M. (short for Melasecca) is a master fingerstyle and slide guitarist who was able to make the unlikely midlife transition from blue collar steel worker to award-winning songwriter.
+
Angelo M. is the real deal. Many performers can sing the blues, but this former steel worker has lived it. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years was bought-out and then put into bankruptcy, Angelo not only lost his livelihood but his pension, as well.
+
Fortunately, he had other talents, which will be on display in concert.
+
He caught Nashville's attention with his two successful self-released albums. His 2012 label debut, "From Steel to Strings," is now gaining worldwide airplay. Some of the tracks are featured in the PBS television series "RoadTrip Nation," and have brought him several prestigious songwriting honors, including a win in Billboard's "World Song" contest.
+
Angelo M. considers himself a folk or roots artist, rather than strictly blues. But one thing is for sure. His is an authentic voice of experience from the American heartland.

MUSICAL play with Appalachian mountain music,
in L.A.:
West Coast premiere of “THE BURNT PART BOYS,” a coming-of-age musical set in a West Virginia mining town, features a soaring Appalachian-inspired score, at the Third Street Theatre, 8115 W 3rd St, Los Angeles 90048; reservations, 323-655-9232 or www.thirdstreettheatre.org
+
Adventure and redemption are at the heart of this new musical inflected with the rich musical sounds of the Appalachia region. Richard Israel directs an unforgettable coming-of-age story that follows a group of teenagers in West Virginia's coal country on their life-altering journey to “the burnt part” –the section of the coal mine that took their fathers’ lives. Musical director Gregory Nabours shepherds the vocally complex score inflected with the rich acoustic sounds of rural Appalachia. Book by Mariana Elder, music by Chris Miller, lyrics by Nathan Tysen. Opens Sep 14 at Third Street Theatre.
+
“The Burnt Part Boys is an engrossing story in which a group of friends goes up a mountain as kids, but comes back down as adults,” says Israel. “By setting the story in the West Virginia coalmines of the early 1960s, the creators look at the American idea of expectation versus aspiration – how we fulfill the life that has been set out for us, and what we do when the path our fathers took isn't necessarily the path we choose for ourselves.”
+
The Burnt Part Boys was a finalist for an American Theatre Critics New Play Award and received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award. It premiered Off-Broadway in 2010 as a co-production by Playwrights Horizons and Vineyard Theatre in 2010, receiving a Lucille Lortel nomination for Best Musical. Variety called The Burnt Part Boys “an adventurous, innovative and gripping musical,” and the The New York Times wrote “the spirit of youthful high jinks recall[s] the exploits of Mark Twain’s beloved roughhousers, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.”
+
Composer Chris Miller and lyricist Nathan Tysen started collaborating in 1999 at New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. In addition to The Burnt Part Boys, they have written the scores to Fugitive Songs (2008 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Revue) and the current Broadway-bound adaptation of the popular novel Tuck Everlasting. Other work includes a song for the revue Stars of David; commissions from Lincoln Center Theater and Playwrights Horizons/Theatreworks Silicon Valley; and an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Boston Globe Top Ten Pick of 2008). Their television work includes songs for Sesame Street (2012 Daytime Emmy Award) and The Electric Company.
+
Gregory Nabours’ musical director credits include The Color Purple (Ovation, LADCC and LA Weekly Awards for Best Musical Direction), Justin Love, Falsettos, Having It All, The Women of Brewster Place, Thoroughly Modern Millie, A New Brain, Spring Awakening, Into the Woods, Assassins, The Full Monty and Rent. Gregory's original song cycle, The Trouble With Words, debuted in 2011 and was awarded the Ovation Award for Best Music and Lyrics for an Original Musical, as well as Best Musical at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Gregory is the resident composer and music director for the Coeurage Theatre Company and can be seen weekly playing for Ryan Black's 88’s Cabaret.
+
The Burnt Part Boys runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm, Sep 14 through Oct 20. Tickets range from $29-$34 (reserved seating); children age 16 and under are $15 with purchase of an adult ticket – for that, use promo code KIDS.

This monthly showcase presents a variety, from Americana to folk, indie-rock to comedy.
+
This month brings:
+
John Stowers, of whom David Harvey says, "John is not only one of my favorite songwriters but one of my favorite people. He is a masterful storyteller who merges roots music with these insanely beautiful pop hooks that keep your toes tapping, and damn! That song will just play in your head for days! I love it when John tells you how the song was written and then he plays it, and completely nails it. He ought to be in movies!" John is the newest member of THE TALL MEN GROUP, that formidable ensemble with Severin Browne, Ed Tree, Marty Axlerod, Jimmy Yessian, and Jeff Kossack. Of late, they have been selling-out stages up and down the West Coast. More at www.johnstowers.com
+
Cynthia Carle, says David Harvey, "is a wonder! She's a multi-talented songwriter, composer, choreographer, director, and actress. Boy can she make words dance! She is a complete original -- and her songs are full of humor, wit, smarts, and style. And she does it all completely unmedicated! She plays with your mind and makes you smile." More at www.cynthiacarlemusic.com
+
Tim Turner asks, "Do you love folky pop songs with that indie rock vibe?" Tim Turner sings sweet melodies with catchy hooks. A good songwriter, he can wring it and bring it in a ballad, too. More at www.reverbnation.com/TimTurner
+
Clare Means is a rising young singer-songwriter, recently featured in "American Songwriter" magazine. She has one of those memorable voices that makes you feel that her song is just for you, she's bright, fresh, and ageless. From Folk Americana, to an indie pop vibe, every melody and verse can grab you. More at www.claremeansmusic.com

Dylan Brody is an award winning playwright, thrice-published author, humorist and story-teller. He's a writer for the Huffington Post and a new contributor to "OffRamp" on KPCC radio in L.A. +
The press (including the Guide) likes Lauren and her music:
+
"LAUREN ADAMS BAND: This is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS, to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion, and MARK “POCKET” GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S 'Evangeline' with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song 'Thirsty,' title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly 'Americana Music Circle' showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." -- Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
+
"One listen and I was hooked. Superb, intelligent, thought-provoking songs. Real songs for real people wrapped in melodies that, promise to capture, inspire and pull the listener in again and again. Songwriters of Lauren Adams' level are few and far between." -- LAURIE JOULIE, Take Back Country Magazine.
+
"Lauren Adams has A CD here that is infectious, the lyrics and sweet melodies along with some sweet slide work make you want to keep listening, a very well done recording." -- Jim Moulton, Country Stars Online.

6 pm  "BOB MORLEY’S BARN HOOT" brings a rare full-set concert appearance by Trough Records recording artist MARK HUMPHREYS, accompanied by guitarist JOHN-MICHAEL KAYE and bassist TIM CUPPS, plus  the songs and stories of BOB MORLEY opening, in a lovely setting in the hills above the San Gabriel Valley in Covina 91724. Reservations get directions by email to smearman_322@yahoo.com
+
This is that "sleeper" show you're always seeking, the one you'll brag about to friends because you were there. MARK HUMPHREYS is a wonderful performing songwriter.
+
He spent the '90s criss-crossing the map of North America, playing every folk venue you've ever heard of, and many you haven't. He was a true troubadour and pioneer of the acoustic renaissance, even before he founded the multi-artist co-op label, Trough Records. But these days, a high-power job makes his live performances -- especially a full-set concert appearance -- precious and rare. Southern California-based singer-songwriter MARK HUMPHREYS has marvelous originals that should have been iconic hits, and a fine voice that delivers them. He's that good. If you've never heard him, don't miss this chance. If you have heard him, you're already making reservations.
+
Opening and hosting the evening is singer-songwriter-storyteller BOB MORLEY.
+
There is NO SET-PRICE ADMISSION for this concert, plus, it is a POTLUCK. "So," Mark tells the Guide, "all you need to bring is something to eat – it can be as fancy or as simple (or somewhere in-between) as you like – a leg of lamb or a twelve pack of soda; a casserole or a bag of potato chips – whatever you like - and everybody gets dinner and a show. And it's FAMILY FRIENDLY - so bring everybody!"
+
It's music, then dinner, then music. Bob Morley opens the evening at 6 pm. Then dinner is served. After dinner, MARK HUMPHREYS performs.
+
Voluntary donations will be accepted at the end of the evening.

8 pm  HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN plays the Smothers Theatre, Pepperdine University 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.
+
"If rosin were flammable, violinist Elana [James] would be charged with arson." --ink19.com
+
Hot Club of Cowtown, the Austin-based band has grown to be the most globetrotting, hard-swinging Western swing trio on the planet. Hot Club of Cowtown has created an international cult following for its sizzling blend of hot jazz and Western swing inspired by its namesakes: "Hot Club" from Reinhardt and Grappelli's Quintette du Hot Club de France, and "Cowtown" from the influence of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys.
+
With appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and at the Grand Ole Opry, the group has both critics and audiences alike raving. The Onion's A. V. Club wrote,"Hot Club of Cowtown sounds like it's spent the last 40 years in tiny rural clubs," whileThe Times (London) remarked,"Unfussy and unpretentious, their blend of down-home melodies and exuberant improvisation harks back to a lost era of so-called western swing. When they plunge into 'Orange Blossom Special' your thoughts turn not so much to runaway trains as to a B-52 tearing up a runway."
+
The band's members are Elana James, fiddle and vocals; Whit Smith, guitar and vocals; and Jake Erwin, bass and vocals. Its latest album, Rendezvous in Rhythm, was released earlier this year on Gold Strike Records.
+
Elana James grew up in Prairie Village,Kansas, and began playing Suzuki violin at age four. It took her almost 20 years to decide between the violin and the fiddle, but in her mid-20s, after much soul-searching,she found her calling in American roots music and has never looked back.
+
In 2006,performing with the Hot Club of Cowtown, she had the honor of representing the US State Department as a musical ambassador throughout Georgia,Armenia, and Azerbaijan, playing everything from Texas hoedowns to American Songbook standards.
+
In 2005 she became the first dedicated female instrumentalist in Bob Dylan's touring band in more than 30 years, then toured with him in 2006 as the opening act for his US summer tour. In addition to tours and recording with Dylan, she has also recorded with Willie Nelson,Ray Price, and Merle Haggard,to name a few. In 2004 she was inducted, along with her Hot Club bandmates, into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame.
+

Oct 11, in Beverly Hills:
9 pm  ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS play "a live performance of his hits, old and new," at the Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Bl, Beverly Hills,
+
Wait. He's a hard-core rocker, right? There's that blurry Americana line again. Remember "House of the Rising Sun"-? No Depression says, "Eric Burdon is back, bigger and better than ever. It’s about time, for him and for us."
+
American Songwriter magazine writes, "[Eric Burdon's] voice is gruffly wizened but still unmistakably the person who mesmerized '60s youngsters singing 'House of the Rising Sun' with booming angst. With a top notch band behind him led by co-producer/drummer Tony Braunagel and a batch of pretty good rockers that reflect on a life filled with more ups and downs than most of us will ever experience, this is a well-earned victory lap. Eric Burdon’s river is far from running dry."
+
Eric Burdon wraps-up the summer leg of his hectic and ongoing World Tour that includes the "Bumbershoot Festival" in Seattle and this one stop in L.A.
+
Some of music's most articulate voices, from Bruce Springsteen to Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, have cited his strong influence upon their work.
+
Earlier this year, Eric released "'Til Your River Runs Dry," (on ABKCO) heralded as his most personal album to date. It has been met with critical acclaim worldwide and is making an impact on AAA radio. Hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time,” Eric Burdon has long been a groundbreaker while maintaining a commanding presence in music with the Animals, with WAR and simply as Eric Burdon.
