Really 'n truly more truly outstanding concerts happen this weekend than we usually see in a month or two. So it's not a good time to hole-up at home. Read the listings and write-ups within. You'll be glad for it.

Last week was encouraging. Friday's "Art Night Pasadena" was a cavalcade of excellence. Saturday at the "Seaside Highland Games" fulfilled all expectations for virtuosic music and exciting dance performance, plus welcome surprises. Sunday, the first time the "Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddlers' Festival" operated under management of the Goleta Valley Historical Society, proved they are committed to excellence. And Tuesday, a different kind of stage was memorable — it had neither a kids table nor a food fight — and how refreshing. Perhaps there is hope for a Kartrashian-free future. And Friday, it RAINED (it even flooded in some places!) So there's plenty to celebrate!

There are literally millions of land mines in the ground all over the world, claiming victims every day, often years after the conflicts in which they were placed have been resolved or become obsolete.

2nd annual "SECRET MOUNTAIN IN THE HEART OF THE PLATEAU FESTIVAL," along with vying for the longest name, is a French-language festival of arts & music where families can enjoy French performances inspired by books like "Wapiti" and "Un trésor dans mon jardin" (A Treasure in My Garden). It happens at Centre Cultural Calixa-Lavallée in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Secret Mountain is a respected childrens' record label and book publisher / distributor. If you need holiday gifts for small fry, check them out.

They're currently promoting two new TSM titles that won "Parents' Choice Awards."

First is their CD, "Sleep Softly: Classical Lullabies by Brahms, Schubert, Satie, Debussy," which received a Gold Award for music. Let’s note that playing the NAMM Show really does mean “playing THE NAMM SHOW.” As in, going through the process outlined above, becoming part of the music industry’s most celebrated scene, and enjoying the enhanced credibility that brings. We add that because every year we are surprised by who is sponsoring an event at NAMM, or by who is trying to lure us away from the Big Show to a concurrent show of their own. And well, that’s a happy surprise when it’s one of the first case. And it’s often rolling our eyes in surprise at the second case; that includes wondering how anyone doing an unaffiliated performance expects the NAMM crowd to leave expensive parking to drive to their guerrilla show, then hope to find a space in the garage (and pay again) back at the NAMM Show.

It may help to know that NAMM has a simple and clear policy about such things. Here it is:

Fast on the heels of her “Cornwall Folk Festival” performance on the 29th of August, Sarah is flying to the US for a two-month, coast-to-coast, 36-show tour, then returning to Jolly Ol’ just in time to play the first of her 22 UK dates, starting October 30th.

We really like this artist. Her latest concept is based on thoughtful analysis of what’s happening to music and how that keeps everyone from hearing a complete record, as we all once did. In this digital era, “listening to a record” has become a near-nonexistent phenomenon; even CD purchases tend to go straight onto an iPod from which tracks will pop up at random. UK-based singer-songwriter SARAH McQUAID was keen to ensure that her fourth solo album, “Walking into White,” got at least a few full-length listens before being subsumed into playlists – so she’s performing the whole thing live, track by track, as the first half of each concert on her forthcoming September-October US tour.

“Sarah McQuaid has clearly held true to her own musical vision,” wrote Helen Gregory in Folk Radio UK, “and it’s to be hoped that ‘Walking into White’ is the album which will bring her the wider commercial success she so richly deserves.”

Belgian blogger Michel Preumont (concerts-review.over-blog.com) described it as “Original, acrobatique et audacieux ... Over the span of her career, Jolie Holland has knotted together a century of American song —jazz, blues, soul, rock'n'roll —into a stew that is impossible to categorize with any conventional critical terminology. This is her burden and her gift, to know all of these American songs of the last ten decades in her head and her heart, and to have to wrestle with their legacy. She dives straight to the pathos of a song the way the very greatest singers, singers like Mavis Staples, or Al Green, or Skip James, or Tom Waits do. Upon first encounter, her songs seem challenging, perhaps unsettling at times, but as so many poets and rockers have shown us (from Dante Alighieri to William Blake to Sylvia Plath to Patti Smith to Nick Cave to Mark E. In fact she thrives on the red hot center of a musical composition, in all its strange and brutal detail. Note how easily the line "I've been taken outside and I've been brutalized" trips off her tongue in Joe Tex's "The Love You Save." Her latest release is Wine Dark Sea, an album of unprecedented confidence and merciless brilliance. Opening this amazing evening will be veteran songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Mike Coykendall (Old Joe Clarks, M Ward, She & Him), who's been quietly carving his unique musical niche for the last three decades. Categorized as part of the acoustic blues revival period of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan inject fun themes into their repertoire, whether it’s “No Money, No Honey,” “Your Shoes Don’t Fit,” “Chicken a la Blues,” “Your Mind Is in the Gutter,” or “My Last Meal.” Sultan’s introduction to blues was via his brother’s T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters records, which he had brought back to California after a stint in Chicago. Sultan and his brother were regulars at the famed Los Angeles folk/blues club the Ash Grove, where they watched and met Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Terry. During Sultan’s teen years, he played electric guitar in garage-style rock bands, then moved to Santa Barbara to attend the university and earn a degree in black studies.

Ball, too, was a regular at the Ash Grove, although the two never met there. Inspired by the ’60s folk revival, he took up guitar at age 11, then three years later learned to play harmonica. From there, he played in Chicago-style blues bands. In 1978, he moved to Santa Barbara; a short time later, Ball noticed an ad for a gig where Sultan was playing blues and ragtime guitar. Ironically, Ball was nearby playing in a rock band, and asked his then-girlfriend (now wife) to take notes and observe Sultan. When her notes read, “He’s got a great sense of humor, and he plays Gary Davis and Blind Blake, and he’s a great guitarist and likes to drink beer,” Ball knew he had to met Sultan. Immediately a partnership was forged, and they’ve been together since 1979.

"Bloodshot Eyes," their acoustic styles of blues, ragtime, and folk, has a trail that's like what's spilled over from tossing fruit in a blender and creating a tasty, nutritious drink. In 1983, they released "Who Drank My Beer?" Moving over to the Flying Fish label, they released "Bloodshot Eyes" (1986), "Too Much Fun" (1990), and "Filthy Rich" (1993).

Rounding-out their careers, they perform studio work such as Levis 501 radio jingles, and Ball played and sang in the Eddie Murphy movie "The Distinguished Gentlemen." Another aspect of their careers is writing instructional books, such as Sultan’s "Introduction to Blues Guitar" and "Acoustic Blues Guitar," and Ball’s "Blues Harmonica." Ball released a solo album in 1996, "Guitar Music," employing diverse styles from Bach to Blind Blake. That same year, Ball & Sultan released "Double Vision," continuing what they love and know best: blues with a funny bone. Obviously, these well-rounded artists bring a lot to bring to every performance.

About TONY FURTADO...

Very few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story).

All of the music of America is in Tony’s music. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.”

A native of Pleasanton, California, who now makes his home in Portland, Oregon, Tony Furtado took up the banjo at age 12, inspired by the "Beverly Hillbillies" TV show and a sixth grade music report. He first attracted national attention in 1987 when he won the "National Bluegrass Banjo Championship" in Winfield, Kansas. Not long after that, Tony opted for the life of a full-time professional musician, joining Laurie Lewis & Grant Street. A second victory at Winfield, in 1991, bookended his years with Grant Street.

In 1990, Tony signed a recording deal with Rounder Records, one of the country’s preeminent independent record companies. Beginning with Swamped in 1990, he recorded six critically acclaimed albums for the label, collaborating with such master musicians as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Stuart Duncan, Kelly Joe Phelps and Mike Marshall. During this period, Tony also performed and recorded with the band Sugarbeat and the Rounder Banjo Extravaganza with Tony Trischka and Tom Adams.

Beginning in the late 1990s—influenced by such musical heroes as Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal—Tony added slide guitar, singing and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He is a tireless road musician who performs in a dizzying variety of formats: solo, in a duo or trio or with his full five-person band. He especially values the opportunities he has had to tour with such legendary musicians as Gregg Allman and with such esteemed slide guitarists as David Lindley, Derek Trucks and Sonny Landreth.

Tony has performed throughout the world at top venues and appeared at such prestigious music festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Jazz Aspen, Kerrville Folk Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Sisters Folk Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival and countless others. “I love playing live,” he says. “All my energy is focused on the love of playing music and rolling with the moment. It’s a give and take from the audience to the stage, and back. And the music that is created is something that otherwise might not occur without that flow.”

With vocal and musical chops that would rival the finest honky-tonker, Fulks' biting, often hilarious skewering of mainstream Nashville has forever placed him outside of the traditional country music spotlight. That's their loss, for in our opinion, Fulks is one of the finest songwriters and performers out there. MARTY AXELROD is an accomplished songwriter whose focus these days is simple: he wants to make you laugh. And shed a tear. Ideally during the same song. And he wants you to keep listening. So he tries to surprise and delight you with each line, each rhyme, each melodic turn. That is his mission as a songwriter. It is not a skill that was taught in his native Cleveland, Ohio. Marty had to spend time in Nashville to study the craft, co-writing with such luminaries as Irene Kelly, Rand Bishop and the late Tim Johnson. One of Marty’s songs was even recorded by folk legend Judy Collins…but it didn’t make the album. Happily ensconced in Northeast Los Angeles, Marty produced and co-wrote the acclaimed concept album "Songs of Shiloh" with Nicole Gordon, which the pair debuted live on radio's long-lost "Tied to the Tracks." Marty's musical "Emperor Norton," co-written with Kim Ohanneson, has had four successful runs in San Francisco and L.A. His songs have appeared on HBO’s "True Blood," "Friday Night Lights," and other soundtracks, including a really bad Patrick Swayze movie… but at least Swayze dances to the song.

Marty is a member of the six-man songwriter collective Tall Men Group, where he is known for songs about a cat lady and the first guy to make fire. Songwriters are among Marty’s favorite people, and of those, Cynthia Carle may be his musical soul mate. The idea of trading songs with her on the Coffee Gallery (back)stage makes him giddy with excitement.

Tracy Newman started playing guitar as a young teen, usually sitting on the diving board of her family’s pool, strumming for hours each day having been influenced by the Kingston Trio. The events and work she has done after that has lead to why she is able to write interesting, funny, and entertaining songs. In the early 70s, she joined an improvisation class taught by Gary Austin, which became The Groundlings. Tracy is a founding member, and besides being in the show, she began teaching and directing there. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered there by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live. Others include Phil Hartmann, Will Ferrell, Kathy Griffin, and Lisa Kudrow.

It was at the Groundlings that Tracy met her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. They started on Cheers, and worked on many shows, including Bob (Bob Newhart), The Nanny, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show and Hiller and Diller (Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon.)

In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for writing the ground-breaking “coming out” episode of Ellen. In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, According to Jim, which recently completed it’s eighth and final season of production. Tracy has been writing songs all along and is once again performing full-time. She has three CDs: “A Place in the Sun,” “I Just See You” and “I Can Swing Forever,” (which is for children, and is about to be released.) Her current band is made up of Gene Lippmann (guitar and vocal), John Cartwright (bass), Paula Fong (vocal) and Doug Knoll (drums). The music is essentially acoustic folk. They do a funny, moving and memorable show.

Roland became guitarist for Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in the late '60s, absorbing the traditional feel and repertoire from the acknowledged "Father Of Bluegrass" that remains a strong element in his music today. Roland's tenure included several landmark recording sessions as a Bluegrass Boy, among them "The Gold Rush," "Is The Blue Moon Still Shining," "Crossing The Cumberlands," "Sally Goodin," "Kentucky Mandolin," and "The Walls Of Time." From Monroe’s band?

Roland moved on to that of another bluegrass pioneer, Lester Flatt, playing mandolin and recording several albums as a member of The Nashville Grass from 1969-1973.

He next spent thirteen years with the progressive west coast group Country Gazette, with such bluegrass luminaries as Byron Berline, Alan Munde, Joe Carr, and Roger Bush.

Then came the Nashville Bluegrass Band, who distinguished themselves as the premier bluegrass band of their generation, winning two Grammys andtheir earning Grammy nominations on every one of their albums. All that was left was Roland putting his own name up-front.

The Roland White Band’s debut album, "Jelly On My Tofu," was nominated for the "Best Bluegrass Album" Grammy in 2003. And plenty of fans of Roland's virtuosity, of the band, and of the best bluegrass music, will tell you that they just keep getting better.
