'Ugely big concert scene this week, this weekend, and into Nowonder. Er, November. It's 'uge and you'll love it. (No, seriously, THIS you really will!)
There are a great MANY new concert listings and Guide "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" picks in this edition, reaching into December and January. Please peruse things carefully and consider these your "Ticket Alerts" — because we just can't deal with the extra hours to comb them out as separate listings and descriptive write-ups for a separate section of "ticket alerts." (Yes, we are re-evaluating things around here.)
Speaking of which... We're hearing that you don't like to scroll past the festivals to get to the concerts. Okay. But if we reverse the order, will we hear the opposite complaint? Let us know your preferences, please. Within reason, of course.

News Feature # 1...
√ "SAMHAIN" — THE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN
"Halloween is an Irish holiday based on Samhain, a Celtic festival held roughly between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice."
That's part of a nice, appropriately seasonal write-up sent to us by the Harp Inn Irish Pub in Costa Mesa for their show this weekend.
In fact, late October is becoming a high point on the Irish-American / Celtic cultural calendar, to tide us over 'til St. Patrick's Day in March. There are MANY especially fine Irish bands performing this weekend, a week earlier than Halloween, which is smart thinking to bring out anyone who must deal with costumed kidlets a weekend later. And by the way: this weekend's Irish music starts all over the map by mid-afternoon, both days. So check Saturday's & Sunday's concert write-ups thoroughly (they're all in Section 7, plus some "bare bones" listings for shows at "stalwart venues" that appear only in Section 6.)
Shura b'gora, the Guide lists a BUNCH of Irish / Celtic concerts this coming weekend, including the annual special show titled "SAMHAIN," which (as always) we highly recommend.
We have, in past years, explained the history of the whole Samhain-thing, feeling the need to do that in a region far more attuned to "Dia de los Muertos," a Mexican pagan festival that was co-opted by the Catholic Church in the Americas, just as all pagan festivals in Europe had been co-opted by the Church, including the biggest one of all, the Feast of Mithras becoming the date for Christmas, whose actual date is completely unknown. Aside from those nasty Inquisitions, the early Catholic Church was rather good at co-opting and including things so you could convert without giving-up your days of gluttony or other revelry.
Beyond that, we were going to share the description of Samhain that we received from the Harp Inn, weren't we? Here it is:
"Well folks, it is definitely autumn: we can feel it in our bones. October means pumpkin carving, cardboard skeletons, and the displays at the local market of the latest Nativity scenes and holiday lights. Yep, when they say, 'Season's Greetings,' they mean just what they say, it's a three-month-long season.
"So, what does this have to do with Irish Americana music played by some fellas who one could say are in their autumn years? Well, I'll tell you. You may not have known this, then again, you may have: we do have a rather well educated, erudite folllowing (if you have to look up erudite, than it probably doesn't apply to you, no worries). Anyway, getting back to my train of thought, you may not have known this, but Halloween is an Irish holiday. Go ahead, Google it, I'll wait.....
"See, I told you. It's kind of based on the Gaelic festival of Samhain — Which is pronounced 'Saw-win.' Samhain is celebrated from sundown October 31st to sundown November 1st.
"Of course, the Gaels had different names for the months of October and November, but I'm not going to put them here, because you might get confused about which band is playing this Sunday. For the record, it's Trooper Thorn, and not the band named after the Irish word for October. Now, to be honest, I have completely forgot the point I was trying to make, so I am going to pause briefly to read back what I have written...

√ MUSICIAN / FILMMAKER DOING SERIOUSLY IMPORTANT PROJECT
There are literally millions of land mines in the ground all over the world, claiming victims every day, often years after the conflicts in which they were placed have been resolved or become obsolete.
That said... You may have seen Christopher Lockett performing around L.A., or noted his name with numerous concert write-ups at many venues.
In his day job, Chris is a filmmaker and TV cameraman. And now it's time to let him speak for himself:
"I'm making a new documentary called 'Until They're Gone.' It's about landmines, the people who remove them, and hope."
"We're crowdsourcing the fundraising - and we're offering tax deductions for every contribution. The campaign ends October 28. It's crunch time."

Speakers for the conference will be announced in the coming months.
Dublin, Ireland, has seen two annual "Youbloom Festival & Conference" and L.A. gets its second in December (the first US event was in November here last year). The northeast Los Angeles event will bring "three full days of entertainment, industry enlightenment, and more."
Last year, performances filled five venues in Highland Park and Pasadena, hosting more than 60 bands from 11 countries around the world, including those from L.A. and across the US, for "a rockin’ 3 days/nights of live music and learning."
The inaugural 2014 conferences in L.A. and Ireland hosted top-selling artists and professional music industry suits. That would suggest this year will be very worth attending.

They're currently promoting two new TSM titles that won "Parents' Choice Awards."
First is their CD, "Sleep Softly: Classical Lullabies by Brahms, Schubert, Satie, Debussy," which received a Gold Award for music. Secret Mountain tells us, "'Sleep Softly' is our third instalment in our classical music series after 'Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music,' and 'Simply Fantastic.'"
Second, Hilary Grist's "Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over" has received a Recommended Award for storytelling. Vancouver-based indie musician and visual artist Hilary Grist writes, performs and, along with her creative team, spearheads the unique clay animation shown depicted on the cover. "Tomorrow is a Chance to Start Over" has also been nominated for a Canadian Folk Award.
Both new titles were released in 2015 and have inspired many enthusiastic reviews. The Guide has reviewed past releases from Secret Mountain and we definitely liked them.

MUSIC CONFERENCE /TRADE SHOW,
in OC (Anaheim):
The 2016 “NAMM SHOW” is the music industry’s biggest annual trade show, music conference, and gathering of music retailers with manufactures and endorsed musicians who very notably perform. It features opportunities for music educators, school administrators, college students, and NAMM Foundation Partners to attend, learn and connect with the music products industry. People in all those categories will be able to register for badges and reserve hotel rooms starting September 30, 2015. Mark your calendar and plan ahead, so you’ll have all your information ready to reserve your room. As the promo proclaims, “The music begins at The NAMM Show — and for that reason, it attracts the world's most powerful buyers.”
The basics... NAMM completely takes-over the Anaheim Convention Center and all the meeting and convention spaces in the surrounding hotels. The Convention Center is located at 800 W Katella Av, Anaheim, CA 92802.
The daily schedules are:
√ Thursday, Jan 21, 10 am–6 pm
√ Friday, Jan 22, 10 am–6 pm
√ Saturday, Jan 23, 10 am–6 pm
√ Sunday, Jan 24, 10 am–5 pm √ Hall E and Level 2 open at 9:30 am
Information on the 2016 NAMM Show grows rather regularly at:
https://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2016
Let’s note that playing the NAMM Show really does mean “playing THE NAMM SHOW.” As in, going through the process outlined above, becoming part of the music industry’s most celebrated scene, and enjoying the enhanced credibility that brings. We add that because every year we are surprised by who is sponsoring an event at NAMM, or by who is trying to lure us away from the Big Show to a concurrent show of their own. And well, that’s a happy surprise when it’s one of the first case. And it’s often rolling our eyes in surprise at the second case; that includes wondering how anyone doing an unaffiliated performance expects the NAMM crowd to leave expensive parking to drive to their guerrilla show, then hope to find a space in the garage (and pay again) back at the NAMM Show.
It may help to know that NAMM has a simple and clear policy about such things. Here it is:
“Planning to host an event at the NAMM Show? This is just a friendly reminder that when creating and promoting your event during NAMM in and around Anaheim, there are a couple of rules to follow.
√ “Events taking place at an Anaheim venue are only approved for use by NAMM member companies.
√ “The use of the NAMM name, logo, and/or font in the title of your event is prohibited. The NAMM name may be used in your promotion only to reference that your event is occurring during the dates of NAMM show. This will ensure everybody is clear about who is producing the event. All NAMM produced events take place at the Anaheim Convention Center, Grand Plaza, and Hilton or Marriott. Other events are not official NAMM events and should not be promoted as such.
√ “If NAMM is mentioned anywhere in the promotion, please add “Event produced by XYZ company and NAMM has no affiliation with or liability for this event.”
Keep this link handy for reference as you dream and scheme...

What a line up of stars, even the “side men” instrumentalists are stars who tour the world making music. All of great wit, skill, and stagecraft.
Jim Kweskin is probably best known as a singer and bandleader, but he also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band was the original "Americana" band, playing everything from classic blues to hillbilly country, ragtime, jazz, and rock 'n' roll. Kweskin has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and traditional jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist.
Alabama-born Juli Crockett is a bona fide Renaissance woman: singer, songwriter, playwright, theater director, undefeated professional boxer and amateur champion, ordained minister, Doctor of Philosophy, and leader of the alt-country/Avant Americana genre-defying band The Evangenitals, as well as the Crockett Sisters. (They’re the same band –you choose which name you prefer) -- Jim says, “Juli writes great songs”.
The teaming of Jim Kweskin and Juli Crockett is the happy collision of classic and contemporary Americana music. Together, Kweskin and Crockett performances are celebrations of virtuoso musicianship seasoned with humor and exuberance. They will be joined by super fiddle player Benny Brydern (Hot Club Quartette) and swinging bassist Marquis Howell (Hobo Jazz). Both are regulars with Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys).
Jim and Juli have a great time singing both old jazzy, folky favorites mixed in with Juli's original (and occasionally irreverent) compositions. Take a wild ride through history and into the future of folk with Kweskin and Crockett.

8 pm TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS play Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583; www.boulevardmusic.com
Tracy Newman started playing guitar as a young teen, usually sitting on the diving board of her family’s pool, strumming for hours each day having been influenced by the Kingston Trio. The events and work she has done after that has lead to why she is able to write interesting, funny, and entertaining songs. In the early 70s, she joined an improvisation class taught by Gary Austin, which became The Groundlings. Tracy is a founding member, and besides being in the show, she began teaching and directing there. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered there by Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live. Others include Phil Hartmann, Will Ferrell, Kathy Griffin, and Lisa Kudrow.
It was at the Groundlings that Tracy met her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. They started on Cheers, and worked on many shows, including Bob (Bob Newhart), The Nanny, Ellen, The Drew Carey Show and Hiller and Diller (Richard Lewis and Kevin Nealon.)
In 1997, they won the Emmy and the prestigious Peabody Award for writing the ground-breaking “coming out” episode of Ellen. In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, According to Jim, which recently completed it’s eighth and final season of production. Tracy has been writing songs all along and is once again performing full-time. She has three CDs: “A Place in the Sun,” “I Just See You” and “I Can Swing Forever,” (which is for children, and is about to be released.) Her current band is made up of Gene Lippmann (guitar and vocal), John Cartwright (bass), Paula Fong (vocal) and Doug Knoll (drums). The music is essentially acoustic folk. Bob Stane says: "Grego lives in Japan and teaches English. His real profession is fascinating the rest of the world with ingenious puppetry. Adults marvel at his creativity and the kids believe it as if it were real life. Lots of squealing in all languages. Plenty for everyone at a warm, cozy musical outing. I highly recommend this. This is his encore. From Japan with love.... it is time to live and believe."
Antique music and multi-instrumentalism morph with puppet creations in this hybrid folk-art cabaret. The instruments, music, and puppets are all either traditional, or original creations rooted in folk tradition. Several historical forms of one-man-band enliven tunes from the thirteenth century to the present on instruments ranging from elegant to fanciful to downright silly. Those include psaltery, bones, stumpfiddle, a couple of rather quirky flutes, and more.
Instruments become puppets, or are played by them. Puppets dance and perform to the accompaniment of music played live, in real time, by the solo performer. Kids love the snappy tunes and funny visuals. Adults appreciate the technique, originality, and cultural depth. Everybody wins. Grego, raised in Socal, and long-time greater Bay Area resident, settled in Japan 15 years ago after spending 12 years street-performing his way through Europe and Asia. As the show now mostly plays international stages, this appearance offers a rare local chance to enjoy these mutant puppet-musical inventions.

Sun, Oct 25, in OC (Costa Mesa):
4 pm TROOPER THORN plays the Harp Inn Irish Pub, 130 E 17th St, Costa Mesa; www.harpinn.com
The Harp Inn sent a nice, appropriately seasonal, write-up for this show:
"Halloween is an Irish holiday based on Samhain, a Celtic festival held roughly between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice."

7 pm THE FRETLESS brings Celtic & Irish music from a hot act, with international flavor and the highest degrees from Berklee College Of Music, to play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001. Reservations, 626-798-6236.
Bob Stane, the venue's impresario, really feels his oats when he books an act of this caliber. He asks, "Are you aware of the multi-Grammy Award acts that grace the stage of The Coffee Gallery Backstage? And stars from all over the world who migrate here? And highly talented and intelligent 'pick of the litter' acts from music schools such as Berklee ? This is the center of high music art. Good music. Good music and stagecraft."
"THE FRETLESS bring CELTIC & IRISH with degrees from Berklee School of music. Phenoms that swing it. String Quartet. Champions in exciting fields.
"THE FRETLESS are a young and innovative band that melds the worlds of Celtic, folk and chamber music into an amazing and unique sound they like to call rad trad. They may look like a string quartet, but with innovative arrangements and roots deeply based in Celtic and Canadian fiddle styles, The Fretless is creating their own unique path in the music world.
"Three members of The Fretless (Ivonne, Karrnnel and Trent) met many many years ago in the Canadian fiddling and step dancing competition circuit and quickly became great friends and each others best competition. It was only natural that they would all go on to end up individually making names for themselves as Canada's top fiddlers. Winning such awards as BC Provincial Fiddle Champion multiple times (Trent & Ivonne), Saskatchewan Provincial fiddle Champion four times (Karrnnel), Canadian National Fiddle Championship finalists (Trent, Ivonne & Karrnnel), Grand North American Fiddle Champion five times (Ivonne) and finalists (Trent & Karrnnel), European Fiddle Champion (Ivonne); it is clear how they would continue on to much musical success.
"Ivonne and Trent went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, USA. It was there that they met Eric. It's not often that you see a cellist that can play trad and Irish music. They quickly bonded and ended up graduating Magna Cum Laude (that's with honors) in 2 degrees in Professional Music (Trent & Eric) and a dual major of Music Business & Management and Performance (Ivonne). Collectively they have earned the following prestigious awards:

While in the Austin Symphony, LEAH ZEGER played with iconic soloists including Pinchas Zukerman, Leila Josefowitz, Yo Yo Ma, and Elvis Costello. She also performed with an amazing variety of top bands, including Pink Martini, The Four Tops, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and she was selected to duel on the violin with Charlie Daniels for his classic song “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”
Zeger has performed on television's "Austin City Limits" with both Pearl Jam and Willie Nelson. That same year, Zeger was also offered a three-year contract with Celine Dion in Las Vegas but turned it down in favor of various touring opportunities. She has also toured with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and was the concertmaster/soloist for Tony- and Emmy-award winner, actress and singer Kristen Chenoweth ("Wicked," "Glee").
Venue impresario Bob Stane asks, "BANJO & BACH? Why not bravely go where no women have gone before? Oh, yes and they sing. A Trifecta. Unbelievable richness in music. Leah & Erin spent time together in opera school and now they team up for jazz and [more]…"
LEAH ZEGER is a stunning example of a violinist and vocalist. With her band, Ira Gonzalez- guitar/vocals, Jeff Radaich- guitar, Brian Netzley- bass. Count on the band being made up of big time players. Leah attracts the best. She recorded the music for a season of Warner Brothers’ TV show, "Off the Map." She performed the Bach Double at Carnegie Hall. LEAH won a scholarship to attend the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in both opera and violin. At 19 years old, while still in college, Zeger won a tenured position in the first violin section of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, becoming the youngest member on staff.
In the last two years, she has performed with the legendary world-music duo, Strunz and Farah, and Argentinian-born gypsy jazz guitarist, Gonzalo Bergara (gonzalobergara.com), at international music festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, Panama City Jazz Festival, SXSW in Austin, and Jazz at the Olympia in Paris.

ERIN INGLISH with the STRINGTOWN AMBASSADORS: Insightful songwriting, lush harmony singing, and fearless picking, this act features the award-winning songwriting of California banjo chanteuse Erin Inglish (expressive, sassy, dynamic banjo; lush and raw power-house vocals) galvanized by the soaring harmonies, tenacious solos and gritty rhythmic drive of the Stringtown Ambassadors - a rotating collective of passionate and unabashed modern-day minstrels hosted by fiddler and singer Rosalind Parducci. Luminous musicianship and rhythmic groove, Erin Inglish with the Stringtown Ambassadors present a high-energy, entertaining, positively-charged act - steeped with harmonies and instrumental prowess on the banjo and fiddle accompanied by percussion, guitar, mandolin or bass. (www.erininglish.com, www.stringtownambassadors.com)
ERIN INGLISH is a California banjo sweetheart. A native of the California Central Coast, Erin delivers a unique presentation of voice and banjo that is reminiscent of the sounds of John Hartford and the activist stylings of Peggy Seeger. Formerly a mechanical engineer in the field of sustainability, Erin now tours internationally as a folk music troubadour. She has lived in India, Madagascar, Bulgaria and Serbia, and her songwriting reflects her worldly travels and grounding passion for sustainability and art. In April, 2013, Erin released her first solo album titled, “A Melody So Sweet,” and then toured – by bicycle – the entire coast of California to celebrate Earth Month. (Time tba) MATY NOYES at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
When Maty Noyes approached her parents about quitting school at 16-years-old to leave Mississippi for Nashville and become a singer, they said, “Yes,” but with a few caveats. “They gave me these rules,” recalls Noyes. “They told me I had to find my own place, get a job, pay for everything, make straight A’s, and finish high school online. My mom and dad were shocked when I did it all, and they let me go. The day I got my driver’s license I moved.” That’s just a snapshot of how dedicated this girl is. In 2014, she found herself alone in Nashville, constantly writing songs between her day job, and playing at night whenever and wherever she could. At a party one evening, Noyes impressed her current manager, Phoenix Stone, with a stunning impromptu piano and vocal performance. The next day, the budding singer and songwriter had a management deal, and she continued solidifying a striking style with her guitar always in hand. Nodding to early influences like Johnny Cash and Elvis as well as Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Noyes unearthed a captivating musical identity of her own. “You get this organic feel in my music, but it’s still pop,” she explains. “I want to include as many sounds as possible. I love pop, alternative, indie, and rock. I try to make the songs relatable, most importantly. It’s honest, real, and truthful.”

For Dara Sisterhen, age has never been anything but a number. An immensely talented singer-songwriter with a fresh new voice, she began working with acclaimed producer Dave Cobb when she was just 14 years old. Now 18, Sisterhen has re-teamed with Cobb (the Svengali behind award-winning albums from Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson) to create one of the best EPs in recent memory. Combining ‘60s influences with gorgeous vocals and insightful lyrics, "Boom" will leave you stunned and wanting for more.
"Mixing '60s guitar pop and country music doesn’t necessarily sound like the most obvious recipe for success. Clearly, though, no one told Dara Sisterhen that when she was cooking up the five tracks on Boom.... Where [Sisterhen] really succeeds, though, is the sheer quality of its songs, with the potential for hit records felt throughout, and the sense that you’re listening to something special, something that’s both genuine and enthralling." — songwritingmagazine.co.uk. As Bob Stane characterizes it, this is an evening of "GRIT, HUMOR AND MUSICAL FUN as some of the longest-running acts who have ever graced The Coffee Gallery Backstage return for a once-per-year gig. Read the amazing copy."
√ Watching Ellen Stapenhorst perform in person a number of years ago, the scientist, humanitarian and philosopher Buckminster Fuller told her, “All my life, I’ve dreamed of what humanity could be, and tonight I see it manifest in you.” True story, but instead of figuring her work on this planet was done, she picked up the torch and has continued to inspire enthusiastic audiences worldwide.
From the L.A. coffee houses of the '60s, Ellen moved on to castles on the Rhine, concert halls in Europe and the Caribbean, and the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver. She brings a joyful intimacy to venues large and small. Guitar and fiddle in hand, Ellen makes the trek from her Western Colorado home to Southern California with her moving and powerful songs, humor and a love of bringing people together. On the airwaves, Ellen’s “Traveler” rode the "Tied to the Tracks" L.A. acoustic radio’s most requested list for two years, and “Grand Junction” hit the jackpot, being featured on NPR’s Car Talk! Ellen’s recording her fifth album of original songs, a mix of personal tales that touch the heart and the spirit, and often make us cry and laugh in the process.
More at: www.ellenstapenhorst.net
√ Her brother, Steve Stapenhorst, is a musician and actor with long credits in TV and film, including Mad Men, Dexter and Space Cowboys. On that night long ago, Bucky Fuller gave Steve one of his books, writing, “To Steve Stapenhorst, who is progressively enriching the music of these extraordinary times.” He continues to enrich the music with his ever-fluid guitar, harmonies in the right place, a song or two from his soul and sibling banter that can only surface after their hundreds of years of performing together . . . more or less. They were both in the eclectic Aspen-based band, Tanglefoot, that toured nationally and recorded in the '70s and early '80s.
√ Sharing the bill is singer and songwriter extraordinaire Severin Browne. A frequent performer at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, Severin is one of the most respected and popular musicians in L.A. acoustic music, solo and as part of The Tall Man Group. He has shared stages with the Kingston Trio, John Hartford, Kenny Rankin, Country Joe and the Fish, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, Delaney Bramlett, and his brother Jackson. But still, Ellen and Steve feel fortunate to call Severin a friend, and wish Bucky could have heard him.

We know, it takes a lot to get acoustic Americana people interested in world music. But with this group, it's worth your time to see if this sparks your attention. This is an exciting and innovative international quartet playing a kind of "World Music" that's infused with jazz, rock and classical meanderings. The group consists of voice, two guitars, and percussion.
√ Almer Imamovic is a classical guitarist originally from Bosnia who grew up playing folk music from the Balkans while playing electric guitar and bass in Rock Bands across Europe.
√ Vocalist Abram Poliakoff is a California native who comes from the classical vocal traditions but moves seamlessly from Verdi, Jobim and Bosnian Sevdalinka.
√ German drummer extraordinaire Till Richter brings his magical touch and good taste to the group adding layers of sound, bringing the music to new heights.
√ Guitarist Tyler McCarthy is a jazz master who beautifully compliments the style of Almer and brings his deep understanding of harmony and improvisation.
The end result is a musical quartet that pushed the boundaries of music and dares to bring something new and original to the scene.

(Time tba) ABBY & THE MYTH concludes her October residency tonight at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
A fresh, unique voice, ABBY POSNER demonstrates through her writing an introspective humanity and an intangible artistic quality that draws you close and holds you tight. Pulling from a palette that is both intellectually broad and emotionally deep, the results are well worthy of the attention she has received. Abby began studying music and performance at age six. A gifted pint-sized pianist, she quickly picked up guitar, drums, bass, banjo, and mandolin, and has continued to master new instruments throughout her career.
Posner moved to Los Angeles in 2002 to advance her musical training at California Institute of the Arts, where she concentrated on both world percussion and composition for songwriting. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Abby began performing live with a number of bands in the L.A. area, establishing a name for herself as a multi-talented artist.
Posner started working on her solo project, now called Abby and The Myth, in February of 2011. “Abby & the Myth are the kind of band that music fans always hope to stumble upon at a bar, but seldom ever do. With a presence big enough to fill an arena, it is hopefully just a matter of time before they get there” - Music Connection.

7 pm LOAFER'S GLORY, the superb ensemble of HERB PEDERSEN, BILL BRYSON, TOM SAUBER, & PATRICK SAUBER, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena. Phone for reservations (10 am-10 pm, 7 days), 626-798-6236; more info at: www.coffeegallery.com/showsat.htm
LOAFER'S GLORY is a supergroup band of legends of pickin' & grinnin'. Venue impresario Bob Stane calls them "A unique engagement of the finest of bluegrass players. A show that will be talked about for years to come," and he says, "Treat you and yours to historical fun."
√ HERB PEDERSEN on guitar & vocals, is an American musician, guitarist, banjo player, and singer-songwriter who has played a variety of musical styles over the past forty years. Pedersen once members of the Desert Rose Band. Pedersen also fronted his own band called the Laurel Canyon Ramblers. Besides this, Pedersen has also worked with the following musicians and groups: Pine Valley Boys, Earl Scruggs, The Dillards, Smokey Grass Boys, Old and in the Way, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Tony Rice, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Linda Ronstadt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, Jackson Browne, John Denver, John Jorgenson, and Leland Sklar.
√ TOM SAUBER on fiddle, banjo, & vocals, is a native of Southern California who has been integral in bringing authentic traditional music to the film industry. In 1980, along with Ry Cooder and David Lindley, he played the music for the motion picture "The Long Riders." He has also appeared in "Bound for Glory," "Geronimo," and numerous TV movies and series.
√ PATRICK SAUBER on banjo, mandolin, & vocals, happens to be the very musical son of old time player Tom Sauber. Patrick has mastered the old-time pre-bluegrass styles on banjo and mandolin, as well as the classic approach to good, solid Scruggs-style 5-string banjo and mandolin, including "Bill Monroe style" and more current styles. Already, his mmbership in two other bands has him touring constantly (Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands and the Brombies). For such a young player, it will be interesting to see where he carries this talent. He also sings all the needed parts in the good trio and quartet numbers.
√ BILL BRYSON on upright bass & vocals comes from a long discography of bluegrass and country music. One of the most skilled upright bass players in the business, he's been with such great groups as The Bluegrass Cardinals, The Country Gazette, The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, The Desert Rose Band, and Bluegrass Etc. (He's still a member of the ladt two). Bill is a wonderful lead singer, and is one of the best baritones in the biz and always in demand for recording sessions. He also plays guitar and minstrel 5-string banjo.

Thu, Nov 5, in Altadena:
3 pm THE ROLAND WHITE BAND — he of The Kentucky Colonels, Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys, Lester Flatt & The Nashville Grass, Country Gazette, and The Nashville Bluegrass Band — brings his own Grammy-nominated band to the intimate Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; www.coffeegallery.com
THE ROLAND WHITE BAND in its West Coastand touring incarnation features Diane Bouska on guitar & vocals, Herb Pedersen on banjo & vocals, Bill Bryson on bass & vocals, Blaine Sprouse on fiddle, and leader Roland White on mandolin.
After a distinguished career devoted to playing bluegrass in several of the most popular and influential groups in the music’s history, Roland White embarked on another chapter of personal musical discovery, fronting his own bluegrass group in the form of The Roland White Band. And really, it was the only thing he still hadn't done.
Roland is known as one of the few unique stylists on the mandolin, with his own unmistakable sound and touch. His gifts as a musician have delighted audiences everywhere: his vitality, soul, and infectious rhythm enable him to speak and even dance through his instrument. Add to this his mastery of ensemble playing, harmonic sophistication, and warm voice guided by a subtle and swinging sense of phrasing, and you have the legend of bluegrass that Roland has become.
Springing from a large family of musicians, they formed The Kentucky Colonels, whose influence has far exceeded the band’s short tenure as an active band. Their "Appalachian Swing" album remains one of the most influential albums of that era. Roland’s tradition-based yet imaginative mandolin playing alongside Clarence’s breathtaking guitar virtuosity cemented this as an indispensable album in any true bluegrass aficionado’s collection. During the years the Kentucky Colonels were together, they featured such great musicians as Roger Bush, Billy Ray Lathum, Leroy Mack, Bobby Slone, and the legendary fiddler Scott Stoneman. And Roland, after The Kentucky Colonels?
Roland became guitarist for Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in the late '60s, absorbing the traditional feel and repertoire from the acknowledged "Father Of Bluegrass" that remains a strong element in his music today. Roland's tenure included several landmark recording sessions as a Bluegrass Boy, among them "The Gold Rush," "Is The Blue Moon Still Shining," "Crossing The Cumberlands," "Sally Goodin," "Kentucky Mandolin," and "The Walls Of Time." From Monroe’s band?
Roland moved on to that of another bluegrass pioneer, Lester Flatt, playing mandolin and recording several albums as a member of The Nashville Grass from 1969-1973.
He next spent thirteen years with the progressive west coast group Country Gazette, with such bluegrass luminaries as Byron Berline, Alan Munde, Joe Carr, and Roger Bush.
Then came the Nashville Bluegrass Band, who distinguished themselves as the premier bluegrass band of their generation, winning two Grammys andtheir earning Grammy nominations on every one of their albums. All that was left was Roland putting his own name up-front.
The Roland White Band’s debut album, "Jelly On My Tofu," was nominated for the "Best Bluegrass Album" Grammy in 2003. And plenty of fans of Roland's virtuosity, of the band, and of the best bluegrass music, will tell you that they just keep getting better.

8 pm ROLAND WHITE BAND featuring Herb Pedersen, Bill Bryson, Blaine Sprouse & Diane Bouska at the Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com
The Fret House presents a special California edition of The Roland White Band, featuring the legendary Roland White on mandolin along with Roland White Band guitarist/vocalist Diane Bouska, and celebrated banjo player and vocalist Herb Pedersen, bassist Bill Bryson and fiddler Blaine Sprouse.
Roland began his career in California in 1954, leading younger brothers Eric and Clarence in The Country Boys, and later The Kentucky Colonels, a groundbreaking bluegrass band whose LP “Appalachian Swing” is considered a landmark recording in the history of bluegrass. Roland has been a member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, Lester Flatt’s Nashville Grass, Country Gazette, two-time Grammy-winners Nashville Bluegrass Band, and since 2000 has led the Grammy-nominated Roland White Band.
Herb Pedersen, who cut his musical teeth playing banjo with California’s pioneering bluegrass group Vern & Ray in the 1960s and has since played with The Dillards, Old & In The Grey, The Foggy Mountain Boys (even subbing for Earl Scruggs), and was a founding member of the award-winning Desert Rose Band and Laurel Canyon Ramblers. Pedersen’s instrumental versatility (banjo, guitar, dobro), warm vocals, and talents as a songwriter (for example, “Wait A Minute”) and producing talents have led to extensive studio work with many important recording artists.
Bill Bryson, who played bass with Herb in both The Desert Rose Band and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers, is also a member of Herb’s west coast group Loafer’s Glory, is another California bluegrass performer with a rich history in the music. He was an early member of The Bluegrass Cardinals, who were formed in southern California, along with the aforementioned bands, and has recorded with groups and artists as diverse as Rose Maddox and Ry Cooder. He has also been a member of southern California bands Bluegrass Etc. and The Grateful Dudes. Also a songwriter of some note; he composed the bluegrass classic “The Girl At The Crossroads Bar.”
Blaine Sprouse relocated to California from Nashville a few years ago, bringing with him a background as one of the most in demand session players in Music City. He has also performed and recorded with a virtual Who’s Who of bluegrass over the years, including stints with James Monroe, Bill Monroe himself, Jim and Jesse, and most memorably perhaps, The Osborne Brothers. Early in his career, Blaine was a protégé of the immortal Bluegrass Boy Kenny Baker, with whom he recorded a duet album, as well as three solo albums for Rounder.
Diane Bouska plays rhythm guitar and sings blues-flavored leads and bluegrass harmony. As a founding member of the Roland White Band, Diane has recorded and co-produced with Roland all of their projects, the 1994 Sugar Hill release “Trying To Get to You”, the Grammy-nominated “Jelly On My Tofu” of 2003, The New Kentucky Colonels’ “Live in Holland 1973″, and The Roland White Band’s current CD, “Straight-Ahead Bluegrass”. She also plays and teaches bluegrass banjo, has authored bluegrass mandolin and guitar instruction books, and teaches rhythm guitar at bluegrass workshops around the country.

For thirty years, Lee Ranaldo was the lead guitarist of Sonic Youth, one of the most influential and artistically sophisticated alternative rock bands of the recent era. Since the band's end in 2011, Ranaldo has been exploring new roles as a solo performer, leader of his new band The Dust, and beyond, to interdisciplinary collaborations in alternative venues like cathedrals and museums, often with his partner Leah Singer. Their recent live performances have been large-scale, multi-projection quadraphonic sound and cinema events. From performing on an electric guitar suspended from the ceiling and swinging over the audience, to rediscovering his love of acoustic folk music, Ranaldo's experimentalist spirit connects with music lovers across the spectrum, from classic rock to avant-garde.

Valley Shine was distilled from a love of whiskey, cats and bluegrass music. Hailing from Louisville, KY, Jenna was influenced by traditional bluegrass music and roots rock like CCR, CSNY and Joni Mitchell. Alex Kinsey and Sierra Deaton met on the beach in Florida when they were in high school, not realizing at the time that it was the fortuitous beginning of a musical journey. Alex was a musician, inspired by the infectious music and optimistic attitude of Jason Mraz, while Sierra was a competitive dancer with a love for all things artistic. Every week Sierra would drive over an hour to see Alex perform at venues around Daytona and New Smyrna Beach and it was only a matter of time before he began calling her up onstage to sing. As this continued for a year, the collaboration became more and more significant and transitioned into Alex & Sierra. Eventually, the American indie folk-pop duo went on to win season 3 of "The X Factor USA." Over the spring of 2014, they worked with various musicians and producers, including Jason Mraz, Toby Gad, Sam Hollander, Julian Bunetta, John Ryan, John Shanks and Martin Johnson to create their debut album “It’s About Us” peaking at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart in 2014. Okay, this one is really for those who like new, somewhat edgy, music. But if that's you, there's a charm and charisma in "Back To Me" from sultry songstress Shana Halligan, in its exploration of human sensuality told through songs of romance, heartache and personal reflection. Adding that perfectly sealed kiss of mystique, pain and hope, Halligan’s uniquely tortured voice brings back the art of classic vocal allure mixed with modern-day, moody production. Her voice carries the vintage appeal of emotive jazz crooners, the ferocity of a modern woman in charge of her artistic destiny, and the vigor of a performer fully realizing her creative zenith. During and since her time as the lead singer/songwriter of Bitter:Sweet, Halligan has sold more than 500,000 records and has accumulated over 70 album credits to her name. Additionally, her music has received numerous high-profile synchs and licensing deals in film, TV, ad campaigns and beyond, including "The Devil Wears Prada," "Bright Eyes," "Focus," "Cars 2," “The Blacklist,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “Entourage,” “Nip Tuck,” and “Grey's Anatomy,” plus others. She’s also collaborated with many major acts, including writing and recording with Serj Tankian of System of A Down, Thievery Corporation (co-writing and performing their biggest hit in recent years “Depth Of My Soul”), new wave bossa nova French collective Nouvelle Vague, and Morgan Page, among others.

The French/American duo, whose stage name is a satire on US & French relations during the Iraq war, have been self-producing and releasing music since 2011 when they first met on the set of a music video. Their home base, Los Angeles, and all the warmth and sunshine of California tends to heavily bleed into their sound, which skirts the lines between pop, folk and indie-rock, always blended with danceable rhythms and a sing-a-long chorus. Since their 2011 debut EP, Let The Games Begin, they’ve appeared on The Hype Machine over 40 times and amassed over 2 million plays on SoundCloud. In the Summer of 2014 they released their latest EP, The Wilder Mile, which included the title track – an indie folk duet with an infectious stomp beat, sing-a-long chorus, handclaps, and a whistle refrain. The now married twosome of Parisian Marie Seyrat and Michigan-native Bruce Driscoll, self-create everything in the Freedom Fry universe from their album art to their cinematic videos and stage clothing. (Time tba) KATE DAVIS at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
The music of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kate Davis has been turning heads in New York's music scene since 2012. Whether she's crooning rootsy ballads or plucking bright riffs from her bass, the gutsy songstress from Portland, Oregon, puts a fresh spin on the standards and brings a canonical sensibility to her own lush tracks.
Vivid, nostalgic melodies materialize out of Kate's musical arrangements, her songbird voice complimented by a rich rock 'n' roll bass-line. Alternating between achingly soulful and flippantly funny, Kate's songwriting combines ranging sonic textures with an anecdotal knack. Her lyrics are novel and rhapsodic, cutting through the clichés and trivia of pop parlance to deliver something honest and truly perceptive.
She's performed at such illustrious venues as The Kennedy Center, The Bowery Ballroom, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall -- as well as pretty much every noteworthy club in NYC. Check out her song "Smoke" live at Rockwood Stage 1 on the venue's website.

(Time tba) ALEX & SIERRA, indie folk duo, play the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
Check out their video for "Little Do You Know" at the venue's website.
One ticket is often good for the entire night at the venue, but it does not guarantee admission to another sold-out show the same evening. Seating is very limited; tables are first come first serve and generally available only for those who order food, unless reserved by a band. Venue is 21+ for all patrons. (Time tba) EL MAY & SARA LOV, plus The Other Person is You, at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
Songwriter El May - also known as Lara Meyerratken - has created an album full of love, loss, desire, and strength. Get to know the layered and orchestral The Other Person is You – with it’s striking images and auditory delights – and it will come as no surprise that before building a career as a freelance musician and composer, Meyerratken was a painter and printmaker, and still makes time for visual experiments. This is the second full-length album written, produced and performed by El May.
Her self-titled debut LP was released in 2010, and received radio support from KCRW and KEXP, and was licensed for television ("Pretty Little Liars," "The Lying Game," "Melrose Place") and film ("Our Idiot Brother").
Prior to recording under the moniker El May, Meyerratken’s impressive capabilities as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist were harnessed by a remarkable variety of artists such as Nada Surf, Luna, Crooked Fingers, and Luscious Jackson. She also composes music for film and advertising, and is a visual artist. Lara scored original music for Hank and Asha - a darling of the 2013-2014 independent film festival circuit. In 2010 Meyerratken won the lauded Cannes “Gold Lion” award as Musical Director for the Match.com “Duet” campaign, and in 2005 won an ARIA Award for her album cover art for Ben Lee’s "Awake is the New Sleep."

Nov 19, in L.A.:
8:30 pm TAMARA LAUREL plays her RECORD RELEASE SHOW for "Runaway" at the Mint in L.A.
This seven-song album has been called, "A perfect blend of Americana, Folk, and Alt Country."
“Tamara has inherent ability and musicianship to convey her lyrics and music in a pure aesthetic sense, and bares her soul in a timeless way.” – GUITAR GIRL.
Her new album's latest focus single, “Come on Come on,” premiered exclusively on Yahoo! Music in mid-October. The album’s first single and video, “Whiskey,” was released in May to some stellar reviews including one from "For The Country Record," which said the song “sees Tamara rise to a whole new level of songcraft and musicianship.”
Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Tamara Laurel performs this show as a special release event for her new album "Runaway" which hit stores on October 16th.
The bill also features performances by The Danielle Nicole Band, Liz Vice and William Caleb Parker.
Produced by Philip Allen (Grammy winner for his work on Adele's "21") and recorded at Hybrid Studios in Orange County, the seven-song album was entirely self-written by Tamara and features a lovely and emotional blend of country and folk that clearly shows the lineage of her influences running from Emmylou Harris through Grace Potter.
Tamara will soon announce a full slate of tour dates for the fall and winter in continuing support of the new record. She recently signed on for a partnership with Pikolinos, a premium artisanal Spanish leather footwear and handbag brand, for a Fall/Winter 2015 and Spring/Summer 2016 campaign that includes a digital photography and video marketing campaign to be used in their catalogs, website and social media and that will coincide with her CD tour.

8 pm BRAD COLERICK & MICHAEL McNEVIN play the Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com
Billboard Magazine called Brad Colerick “one of a baker’s dozen of acts to watch in the folk community around the world.” A finalist at Kerrville, Falcon Ridge, and Sisters Folk Festival songwriter competitions, Colerick’s songs have landed in the top 5 of both the Folk-DJ and Euro-Americana charts.
Michael McNevin grew up in a train town in the east bay hills of the San Fransisco Bay Area. His songs read like short stories, with a keen eye for detail. Accomplished guitar work and seasoned vocals underscore the characters and places he comes across in his travels. He is a winner of the Kerrville New-folk award in Texas, six-time winner of the “Song Of The Year” from the West Coast Songwriters, and a “Top 12 DIY Artist Of The Year” in The Performing Songwriter Magazine. He’s shared hall stages with Johnny Cash & The Carter Family, Donovan, Shawn Colvin, Utah Phillips, Christine Lavin, Richie Havens, and hundreds of others on the US songwriter circuit. He’s been a main-stager at the High Sierra, Strawberry, Kerrville, and Philadelphia music festivals.
When he’s not gigging, he owns and operates “The Mudpuddle Shop”, a converted 1920′s 15′x15′ barbershop in his hometown of Niles, in the SF East Bay hills of Fremont. Now it in it’s tenth year, the shop is a creative hive for concerts, swaps, jams, and songwriting workshops. He’s also an Etch A Sketch artist of some renown (not kidding) – he illustrates his lyrics, dumfounding audiences with the little red toy. His drawings hang proudly on the Mudpuddle Shop walls, waiting for an earthquake.
More info at www.michaelmcnevin.com
Press Quotes:
“I don’t know what’s best about ‘Sketch’ – Michael McNevin’s music or his Etch-A-Sketch drawings that accompany each song. McNevin is a singer songwriter of the highest order…” ~ Acoustic Guitar Magazine.
“Secondhand Story” is an evocative peek into a stranger’s life.” ~ Chicago Tribune.
“The talent of Michael McNevin lies in his ability to extract juicy bits of life from his surroundings and let a tale unravel from each one.” ~ The Performing Songwriter Magazine.
“…heard you on the KFOG acoustic Sunday morning show …bagging groceries and an Etch-A-Sketch. Two of my historical accomplishments — dig the tunes.” ~ Tony Bennett.
“McNevin, whose cynical-hopeful lyrics, and funky semi-cover of Paul Simon’s ‘The Boxer’ (with hysterical new lyrics and a new title, ‘The Taxer’) made him a crowd favorite at the High Sierra Music Festival. His childhood baseball tale, ‘The Pride of Niles-Centerville’, was another that captured imaginations.” ~ Village View, L.A.

(Time tba) "THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION" presents BILLY STRINGS & DON JULIN at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
Incendiary American roots duo Billy Strings & Don Julin tap into the vein of the earliest bluegrass music on their new album Fiddle Tune X, back when bluegrass was a rough-and-tumble art form pouring out of the Appalachian mountains, made with great virtuosity and huge attitude.
With just two instruments and one voice, this duo has been tearing up stages across America and generating huge buzz based on their intense live shows. Drenched in sweat, grimacing like a banshee, howling like a bluegrass berserker, and picking with such ferocity that he’s been known to break three strings in one song, 22-year-old guitarist and singer Billy Strings could have tumbled out of coal country in the old mountains, tattoos and all, but actually hails from Michigan.
That's where he met mandolinist Don Julin. Older in years and experience, Strings’ musical partner Julin has carved out a lengthy career at the forefront of acoustic mandolin music, known for his wide versatility, powerful picking technique, and remarkable creativity on this humble instrument.
On stage, the two egg each other on to more and more intense riffs and improvised breaks, pushing harder and harder on their own abilities to try to break through to new levels of musicianship. There’s a reason that they were called “the unholy child of Pantera and Tony Rice” by The Bluegrass Situation, and they show this intensity on their new album, "Fiddle Tune X." Expect plenty from the album at this show.

(Time tba) GABRIEL KAHANE at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
Hailed by Rolling Stone as "one of the year's very best albums", Gabriel Kahane's major label debut, "The Ambassador," is a meditation on the underbelly of Los Angeles seen through the lens of ten street addresses.
Last season, Kahane appeared at BAM's Harvey Theater in the critically-acclaimed New York premiere of the stage production of "The Ambassador," directed by Tony Award-winner John Tiffany. The production was also presented by the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, as well as by Carolina Performing Arts at UNC Chapel Hill, where Kahane is involved in a multi-year academic and artistic residency. The 2015-2016 season finds Mr. Kahane involved in a number of touring projects with friends and collaborators new and old.
In addition to making solo appearances with the North Carolina and Colorado Symphonies, as well as with Boston-based string orchestra A Far Cry, Kahane will appear on separate tours with the string quartet Brooklyn Rider, and with pianist/composer Timo Andres, the latter tour culminating in a duo recital at Carnegie Hall as part of that institution's 125th anniversary season. In March, Kahane makes his European solo debut in a concert at the recently opened Paris Philharmonie.

8 pm JERRY & DEBBIE BURGAN with THOLOW CHAN play the Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com
Jerry Burgan, co-founder of We Five, returns to the Fret House on Saturday, Nov 28. Joined by We Five’s lead singer,Debbie Burgan, and long time bassist, Tholow Chan, their musical roots trace back to the classic folk era of the early 60s before they rode the leading edge of the folk-rock with their hit recordings of You Were On My Mind and Get Together.
The Songs & Stories of Burgan and Chan bring audiences on a first-person joy ride though some of the most magical and memorable moments of their common musical experience– when folk songs topped the charts, Dylan hadn’t plugged in, and Lewynn Davis wasn’t even a glint in the Cohen Brothers’ eye.
Between songs, Jerry shares fascinating tales from his new book, Wounds to Bind – A Memoir of the Folk Rock Revolution, interwoven with the spirit of departed legends like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and the Weavers, as well as the next wave of artists they inspired—like Jerry’s mentor and Americana pioneer, John Stewart.
Along with a the wealth of classic folk material drawn from seven We Five albums and Jerry’s solo CD, Reflections, Songs & Stories, you can count on hearing some of your favorite tunes—and a few surprises just for fun. Burgan and Chan’s rapport has a seamless quality that’s been honed by time and they draw each audience into the feel-good experience. When the three of them sing together, their tight arrangements bring to life the exhilarating power, harmony and charm that made folk trios so popular.
It’s an intimate, up close experience that puts you up front for a terrific folk concert with artists that made it happen. Don’t miss it.

Founder of the renowned Muriel Anderson’s ALL STAR GUITAR NIGHT®, she enjoys sharing her joy of music via her charity, the MUSIC-FOR-LIFE ALLIANCE.
Muriel Anderson is the first woman to have won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. Muriel’s unique approach to the instrument virtually transforms the guitar into a lyrical choir, then a marching band, then a Japanese koto, then a Bluegrass band, one minute launching into a Beatles’ tune and the next, Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez.
