We'll happily admit that we are very prejudiced in favor of things that happen this weekend. And that's a whole week before the next onslaught of all those other very fun festivals that vie for your attendance on Memorial Day Weekend. So we cover all of 'em.
Plus, we know sumpin' else — that once you're in music mode, you'll likely stay there. So we include word of the best concerts happening betwixt now and July 4th. Of course that is an organic proposition, since word arrives here every day of more 'n more stuff going on, somewhere out there. * Doug MacLeod just Won the Blues Foundation's "2017 Acoustic Artist Blues Music Award."
* July 7th will bring the release of his third album on the Reference Recordings label, titled "Break The Chain." On it, Doug continues to explore the breadth and depth of the human condition. Each of the twelve new original songs is extremely personal and at the same time, universal; covering subjects topical, humorous, and soulful; from the satirical to the sublime. "Break The Chain" will be released on compact disc with HDCD, and as high-resolution and conventional downloads; and later, as a premium 2-LP set.

MUSICAL MEMORIAL FOR DUANE THORIN IS MAY 27
DUANE THORIN left the planet on March 29th, 2017. He was a stunningly fine musician, a bright presence with a brilliant mind, and a wonderful friend to the music community and all who were privileged to know him. Duane was a personal friend whose absence is a void felt by many, and whose frequent communications are missed daily around this windblown adobe.
Whether you knew him from his solo performances with his six or twelve string guitars, or in his operatic "CHEF DUANIO" character, or as the performer-arranger half of the acclaimed duo, THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS, you know what an amazing talent he was.
His musical memorial is set for the world-famous venue where he once booked many of the acts:
The Ice House, 24 N Mentor Av, Pasadena, CA 91106. It happens May 27, from 1-5 pm.
Duane spent many happy and invigorating times there, on stage, backstage and in the office doing all the things a producer and booker must do. Plus, the venue seats many more people than his usual music haunt up the hill, the Coffee Gallery Backstage.
There is a city parking structure on Mentor Av, across from the Ice House, or it's walkable from the Lake Avenue station of the Gold Line light rail.
DONNA BARNES-ROBERTS is producing the afternoon event. She says, "If you have any questions, or contributions of photos, stories, videos, or complete fabrications, please send me an email as I am compiling these bits for the memorial and beyond."
Donna refers to herself as "your humble servant in Duanio-Land."
There are some opportunities for additional musicians to perform. Especially if you ever shared a stage with Duane. Don't be bashful, and remember, having a part is the best way to get through something when you're grieving.

NET NEUTRALITY MAY VANISH ON THURSDAY — WHY YOU SHOULD CARE, & WHAT YOU CAN DO
We'll let Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D, Hawaii), share the mic for this one. She says:
"The FCC is a government entity obligated to the serve the public interest — however, their plan to repeal net neutrality serves corporate interests, and must be stopped. Add your name if you agree.
"The FCC is meeting tomorrow (Thursday, May 18) to review the landmark and extremely important rules established on net neutrality. Trump-appointed [FCC] chairman Ajit Pai is bent on overturning this popular regulation, which prevents internet service providers (ISPs) from withholding internet speed from customers or blocking certain content according to how much they pay."
We hope you read that part carefully. The new FCC chairman wants to repeal the laws that require ISPs to let everyone drive on the internet freeway. It would become a tollway where the rich could go as fast as they want, and the rest of us would be relegated to driving bumpy dirt roads.
Tulsi Gabbard continues:
"We need to keep the internet free and open to all people. Anything less is corporate censorship sponsored by a government agency, and unfortunately, that’s what the big ISPs and their friends in the FCC want. More corporate profit, more restricted access for users, and the ability to take customers private browsing data to turn over to advertisers for a profit.
"With a boom in internet technology, it’s hard enough keeping our laws and regulations up to speed to protect consumers. Overturning net neutrality takes us in the wrong direction."

The link is below. And it's important. As of mid-afternoon Wednesday, over 96.5% of comments in favor of abolishing net neutrality had been sent by corporate web bots, and only 2% of individual human beings favored giving our rights to rich corporations. Still, the total number of comments — those from humans and those from web bots — will be used to justify Ajit Pai's move to give the web to corporations, unless all of us respond in numbers too big to ignore.
Congresswoman Gabbard says, "Sign... today to show the FCC that our rights to privacy and information aren’t up for auction."
She continues:
"The American people made their preference clear in 2015, flooding the FCC website with over 4 million public comments in favor of net neutrality, which the commission established. Just last year, a US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling. Now under new Republican leadership, the FCC’s attempt to pull that regulation out from under the public is a brazen ploy to give corporations yet another advantage over consumers.
"The FCC chairman may not care for public opinion when compared to corporate profitability, but I do. Lawrence, we need your help to fight decisions like this every day in Congress, in Hawaii, and anywhere else that we see injustice occur. I serve to put people before profits, and open access to the internet is one of the greatest gifts technology has given us. It should not be restricted according to how much one can afford to pay for it.
"It is critical that we make our voices heard before the FCC meets to determine the future of net neutrality. Will you join me in signing this petition to keep it in place?"
We can’t allow the FCC to stifle consumer choice in the name of protecting the largest internet service providers’ profits. Net neutrality must remain, and with your help, it will.

UPDATE: LATE THURSDAY...
They did it. They actually voted to initiate the repeal of net neutrality.
On a party-line vote, the FCC voted for the first step of Chairman Ajit Pai's plan to hand-over control of the internet to giant telecom corporations and screw the rest of us.
Comcast and Verizon may have won this battle, but many of our fellow citizens are awake now, and vowing that the corporatocracy has not won the war.
Thursday's vote was the very bad, very dangerous first step in the FCC's rule-making process. We have until July 17 to bring as much pressure as possible, not only on the FCC, but also on Congress and the White House, to keep net neutrality rules in place.
We need to make sure that our elected representatives in the House and Senate, as well as the White House, all understand this: if the FCC goes forward with handing over control of the internet to Comcast and their big telecom brethren, they will be held accountable when we vote in 2018.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 17, 2017) – Most Southern Californians know the City of Hope in Duarte, CA. The FAR-West Conference is a key gathering place for music and arts communities from the Greater West and beyond. FAR-West draws members from California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii, and in Canada from Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories. The FAR-West conference relocates every two years; this is the second year that Bellevue, Washington is hosting the event.
In addition to seeing first-rate entertainment at the official showcases and "Venues Choice Concert," it's a participatory event. All those in attendance can connect, collaborate, perform, learn, and celebrate their diverse talents. Highlights include:
• Venues' Choice Concert presenting favorite acts from popular stages.
• Two juried Official Showcase Concerts starring top acoustical acts.
• Best of the West (BOTW) Award Luncheon
• Pre-conference Wednesday Night Open Stage at Dusty Strings in Seattle.

The organization completed its 2017 elections earlier this month. It's likely you know some or all of these folks. Re-elected to a three year board term are Carey Appel (CA) and Joel Tepp (WA). Newly elected board members for three years are Mary Anne Moorman (WA) and Stephen Bond Garvan (ID). Two ballot questions about revising the by-laws were passed by membership. At its May 9 meeting, the FAR-West board also appointed Michael Howard (AK) to a one year board term. The Board re-elected officers to one year terms: Mark Kaufman (WA), President; Jeanette Lundgren (OR), Vice-President; Janet Dukes (NV), Secretary; Ronnie Weinberger (CA), Treasurer.

MARINA V BLENDS FOLK SENSIBILITIES INTO POP WITH FABULOUS LYRICS
Like most fans of traditional Folk-Americana music, we also love new music that is well crafted. That applies whether it's delivered with mandolins, banjos, guitars, accordions, or keyboards.
We've told you about Russian emigre MARINA V many times over the past few years. There are many reasons to celebrate her talents — her keyboard composing and engaging performance style are high on the list. So are her ability to apply her multilingual mastery to the crafting of lyrical sentiments in English better than most songwriters who were raised with English as their first (and probably only) language.
This time, we're going to ask you to approach one of her songs backwards. (No, not a "Paul is a walrus" vinyl-spun-backwards thing, but a look before you leap kinda thing.) Read the lyrics first, before you watch the video. That's because you won't be able to savor the lyrics in the first listen unless you've seen them first. The words begin simply enough, and the chorus seems simple — but wait'll you see where this songwriting/performing duo takes them.

NAVIGATION / VENUE TRAFFIC ALERT, now through May 20, Pasadena area
In professional bike racing, the Amgen Tour of California begins Thursday, May 11, and will conclude a week from Saturday, on May 20, with the final stage beginning at Mountain High in the San Gabriel Mountains, and finishing in Pasadena at the Pasadena Convention Center at 300 E Green Street. The home stretch comes down the Angeles Crest Highway, passes through La Canada, runs east on Woodbury Road and turns south on Los Robles Blvd. The riders then turn east on Colorado Boulevard, go one block and turn right on Madison, then right on Green Street to the finish line. The race is expected to end around 1:45 PM. If you like bike racing, it will be an exciting place to be, and if you don't, a good place to avoid. If you want to see the finish, arrive early and allow time to find parking. Thanks to our friends at the Pasadena Folk Music Society for the word.
