May 17-21, and more; two BIG FESTIVAL Weekends; fine Concert picks — May 17 edition 2017

.
.
MANY ADDITIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO FESTIVAL & CONCERT LISTINGS since this was originally published. It's worth a second look, if you already scrolled through, prior to midnight Thursday night/Friday morning.
__________

We'll happily admit that we are very prejudiced in favor of things that happen this weekend. And that's a whole week before the next onslaught of all those other very fun festivals that vie for your attendance on Memorial Day Weekend. So we cover all of 'em.

Plus, we know sumpin' else — that once you're in music mode, you'll likely stay there. So we include word of the best concerts happening betwixt now and July 4th. Of course that is an organic proposition, since word arrives here every day of more 'n more stuff going on, somewhere out there. So, like any real news source, what's up-to-the-minute today is but a partial projection of the impending future by tomorrow. Which is a sledge hammer of a hint to say, stay in touch with the Guide.

To make this departure to Tunetown, jump into the vestibule. The conductor has already called "All aboard!"

# 1 news feature...

FESTIVALS, CONCERTS, WORKSHOPS, ETC. — NOW THROUGH THIS WEEKEND

With soooo much imminent goodness — the "12th Ever OLD TIME SOCIAL" kicking-off Thursday night and running through Saturday night; the "DOHENY BLUES FEST" running all weekend; bluegrass fests in Las Vegas and Berkeley; the "JOSHUA TREE SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL"; and our favorite, the 57th annual "TOPANGA BANJO•FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL" happening this Sunday, May 21st — staying home is not an option.

Of course, there's even MORE to complicate your choices, and we cover all that, too. You'll be glad you moseyed over for a gander at the Guide to have yerself a look-see.

The FESTIVALS listed herein are only SOME of those happening — they're just the ones in California & nearby, like Vegas — and all we do here is mention 'em. COMPLETE INFO on all those, PLUS dozens more festivals throughout North America, are all covered in detail in the Guide's yuge "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA" at

8 pm RODRIGUEZ plays the City National Grove Of Anaheim, 2200 E Katella Av, Anaheim, CA 92806; 714-712-2700; www.citynationalgroveofanaheim.com
* He is the real-life archetype for all those myths of a great musician presumed dead who was, all the while, very much alive. Rodriguez is an American musician and the biggest-selling artist, ever, in South Africa. And there, his music was a factor in bringing-down the apartheid regime — without him ever knowing about any of it until years later. That story is the subject of the award-winning film about him, "Searching for Sugar Man."
* The Guide has done feature stories on the artist and the film:

* Since beginning her career covering such stories as the conflict in Kosovo and the disputed Pakistan-India border, photojournalist Ami Vitale has let one principle guide her work: to live the story. That means she's gone to tremendous lengths to capture the power of the human spirit even in the face of adversity-living in mud huts, contracting malaria, and braving civil war in Guinea-Bissau. But soon, another philosophy began to overtake her work: "you can't talk about humanity without talking about nature." Thus, she chronicles her journey from documenting warzones to helping to reintroduce rhinos to the wild, and donning a panda costume to remain anonymous among the giant mammals.

Rodriguez is an American musician and the biggest-selling artist, ever, in South Africa. And there, his music was a factor in bringing-down the apartheid regime — without him ever knowing about any of it until years later. That story is the subject of the award-winning film about him, "Searching for Sugar Man."

MUSICAL MEMORIAL FOR DUANE THORIN IS MAY 27

DUANE THORIN left the planet on March 29th, 2017. He was a stunningly fine musician, a bright presence with a brilliant mind, and a wonderful friend to the music community and all who were privileged to know him. Duane was a personal friend whose absence is a void felt by many, and whose frequent communications are missed daily around this windblown adobe.

Whether you knew him from his solo performances with his six or twelve string guitars, or in his operatic "CHEF DUANIO" character, or as the performer-arranger half of the acclaimed duo, THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS, you know what an amazing talent he was.

His musical memorial is set for the world-famous venue where he once booked many of the acts:

The Ice House, 24 N Mentor Av, Pasadena, CA 91106. It happens May 27, from 1-5 pm.

Duane spent many happy and invigorating times there, on stage, backstage and in the office doing all the things a producer and booker must do. Plus, the venue seats many more people than his usual music haunt up the hill, the Coffee Gallery Backstage.

There is a city parking structure on Mentor Av, across from the Ice House, or it's walkable from the Lake Avenue station of the Gold Line light rail.

DONNA BARNES-ROBERTS is producing the afternoon event. She says, "If you have any questions, or contributions of photos, stories, videos, or complete fabrications, please send me an email as I am compiling these bits for the memorial and beyond."

Donna refers to herself as "your humble servant in Duanio-Land."

There are some opportunities for additional musicians to perform. Especially if you ever shared a stage with Duane. Don't be bashful, and remember, having a part is the best way to get through something when you're grieving.

Contact Donna at:

donna@barnesroberts.com

or by phone at 626-344-3488.

NET NEUTRALITY MAY VANISH ON THURSDAY — WHY YOU SHOULD CARE, & WHAT YOU CAN DO

We'll let Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D, Hawaii), share the mic for this one. She says:

"The FCC is a government entity obligated to the serve the public interest — however, their plan to repeal net neutrality serves corporate interests, and must be stopped. Add your name if you agree.

"The FCC is meeting tomorrow (Thursday, May 18) to review the landmark and extremely important rules established on net neutrality. Trump-appointed [FCC] chairman Ajit Pai is bent on overturning this popular regulation, which prevents internet service providers (ISPs) from withholding internet speed from customers or blocking certain content according to how much they pay."

We hope you read that part carefully. The new FCC chairman wants to repeal the laws that require ISPs to let everyone drive on the internet freeway. It would become a tollway where the rich could go as fast as they want, and the rest of us would be relegated to driving bumpy dirt roads.

Tulsi Gabbard continues:

"We need to keep the internet free and open to all people. Anything less is corporate censorship sponsored by a government agency, and unfortunately, that’s what the big ISPs and their friends in the FCC want. More corporate profit, more restricted access for users, and the ability to take customers private browsing data to turn over to advertisers for a profit.

"With a boom in internet technology, it’s hard enough keeping our laws and regulations up to speed to protect consumers. Overturning net neutrality takes us in the wrong direction."

You can register your desires on the FCC comments page that John Oliver exposed as intentionally obscure.

The link is below. And it's important. As of mid-afternoon Wednesday, over 96.5% of comments in favor of abolishing net neutrality had been sent by corporate web bots, and only 2% of individual human beings favored giving our rights to rich corporations. Still, the total number of comments — those from humans and those from web bots — will be used to justify Ajit Pai's move to give the web to corporations, unless all of us respond in numbers too big to ignore.

Congresswoman Gabbard says, "Sign... today to show the FCC that our rights to privacy and information aren’t up for auction."

She continues:

"The American people made their preference clear in 2015, flooding the FCC website with over 4 million public comments in favor of net neutrality, which the commission established. Just last year, a US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling. Now under new Republican leadership, the FCC’s attempt to pull that regulation out from under the public is a brazen ploy to give corporations yet another advantage over consumers.

"The FCC chairman may not care for public opinion when compared to corporate profitability, but I do. Lawrence, we need your help to fight decisions like this every day in Congress, in Hawaii, and anywhere else that we see injustice occur. I serve to put people before profits, and open access to the internet is one of the greatest gifts technology has given us. It should not be restricted according to how much one can afford to pay for it.

"It is critical that we make our voices heard before the FCC meets to determine the future of net neutrality. Will you join me in signing this petition to keep it in place?"

We can’t allow the FCC to stifle consumer choice in the name of protecting the largest internet service providers’ profits. Net neutrality must remain, and with your help, it will.

"Mahalo,
Tulsi"
___

SUBMIT YOUR COMMENT TO THE FCC

Try getting through on the direct FCC link that has the intentionally confusing url:

https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/search/proceedings?q=name:((17-108))

Or, if that one is down again, you can use an FCC alternative entry point. But this one has its own built-in way to scare you off. It requires you download their template and fill it out completely in order to make your statement, and then you can follow their instructions to upload it to their site:

https://www.fcc.gov/restoring-internet-freedom-comments-wc-docket-no-17-108
___

We wish we could tell you that the link John Oliver established — the one that has crashed the entire FCC website, twice — would get your message registered. But it won't. The FCC, citing some arcane "procedural quirk," is NOT accepting any comments that have been made through

http://gofccyourself.com
___

Congresswoman Gabbards has her own petition online. While it's less effective than registering your thoughts directly with the FCC, it doesn't hurt to sign her petition and add to whatever weight she can bring to bear. Plus, it lets her know you support her taking a leadership position against the corporate power grab. That's at:

http://aloha.votetulsi.com/page/s/net-neutrality
___

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU BECOME AWARE OF THE HUGE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS PROPOSED CHANGE IN GOVERNMENT POLICY AND REGULATION.

A scathingly effective and informative video treatise — and one that is bitingly funny in its ridicule of the oligarchs who seek to control the web (for the same reasons they try to control everything else in our society) for their own interests, purposes, and maximization of profits — is the subject of this splendid video by Lee Camp. It's from his weekly series, "Redacted Tonight."

If you're not yet a "Lee" fan, prepare to become one. Here's his special feature from last Friday, "Our Internet Will Be Destroyed in the Coming Weeks & No One’s Talking About it":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBkMRDbgAY4

The YouTube notes for the above say, "Lee explains all of the new pushes by the telecoms and the FCC to undermine internet freedom, one of which has them going so far as to actually call their attempts at crushing internet freedom, you guessed it — "INTERNET FREEDOM." It’s Orwellian and sick. Lee goes on to shred the head of the FCC, Ajit Pai, by tearing into video footage of Pai being an absolutely ridiculous, villainous corporate tool. Lee then explains how important maintaining Net Neutrality is. He discusses how an open internet is why movements like Black Lives Matter, the Bernie Revolution and Occupy have been able to even exist. This and more on 'Redacted Tonight.'"

Plus there's a fine article you can read at http://leecamp.com:

"While the U.S. Prepares to Crush Net Neutrality, Other Countries Have Made it a Basic Human Right."

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

UPDATE: LATE THURSDAY...

They did it. They actually voted to initiate the repeal of net neutrality.

On a party-line vote, the FCC voted for the first step of Chairman Ajit Pai's plan to hand-over control of the internet to giant telecom corporations and screw the rest of us.

Comcast and Verizon may have won this battle, but many of our fellow citizens are awake now, and vowing that the corporatocracy has not won the war.

Thursday's vote was the very bad, very dangerous first step in the FCC's rule-making process. We have until July 17 to bring as much pressure as possible, not only on the FCC, but also on Congress and the White House, to keep net neutrality rules in place.

We need to make sure that our elected representatives in the House and Senate, as well as the White House, all understand this: if the FCC goes forward with handing over control of the internet to Comcast and their big telecom brethren, they will be held accountable when we vote in 2018.

USA SONGWRITING COMPETITION HAS LIMITED-TIME CD OFFER, through May 19th

For a VERY limited time, between now and May 19th, if you enter the 22nd USA Songwriting Competition you get a copy of the "USA Songwriting Competition Compilation CD" —

https://online.songwriting.net/?promo=CD3

This is one of the longest-running and top songwriter contests with great prizes and the Guide tells you about it every year. In their late announcment just today, contest officials seem to be tripping over their own shoelaces bragging about all the artists on this limited CD. They told the Guide, "In the limited time offer that we have, there is no way to summarize them all. Get it while stocks last, because in 3 days time, the offer is gone... [and] you would have missed the boat on this Compilation CD!"

On it, you will hear the top winning songs of the past year, featuring winning tracks by songwriters who include Jerad Finck, Tim Gates, Jesse Blaze Snider, Cam Nacson, Jared Rabin, Trev Lukather, Frank Raknes Schonberg, Marlowe Stone, Pinnacle TheHustler, Paulina Aguirre, Tiffany Smith, Brian Kelly, Lisa Hilton, Terry Fator, Benjamin Furman, and more people you've never heard of — yet. Because winning this competition has proven to be a path to a music career for many.

Karen Randle runs Artist Relations at the USA Songwriting Competition. She says, "I decided to re-open the Machine program for a few days. But you have to act quickly – this special offer is only good till May 19th and we will be closing this shortly. After you enter, we will mail you the compilation CD, so enter now before all the Compilation CDs are gone."

Sure, it's a promo gimmick. But if you're a songwriter, you should enter, anyway. And it never hurts to hear what kind of material made it with the impressive panel of music industry judges to win in each of the many categories last year.

All the entry instructions are at the above link.

MARINA V BLENDS FOLK SENSIBILITIES INTO POP WITH FABULOUS LYRICS

Like most fans of traditional Folk-Americana music, we also love new music that is well crafted. That applies whether it's delivered with mandolins, banjos, guitars, accordions, or keyboards.

We've told you about Russian emigre MARINA V many times over the past few years. There are many reasons to celebrate her talents — her keyboard composing and engaging performance style are high on the list. So are her ability to apply her multilingual mastery to the crafting of lyrical sentiments in English better than most songwriters who were raised with English as their first (and probably only) language.

This time, we're going to ask you to approach one of her songs backwards. (No, not a "Paul is a walrus" vinyl-spun-backwards thing, but a look before you leap kinda thing.) Read the lyrics first, before you watch the video. That's because you won't be able to savor the lyrics in the first listen unless you've seen them first. The words begin simply enough, and the chorus seems simple — but wait'll you see where this songwriting/performing duo takes them.

The song is "BORN TO THE STARS" written by Marina Verenikina & Nick Baker.

We are, we are, we are
We are born to the stars, we are
We are never to stop
Never to stop
We are the only chance we've got

Whatever happened to
The dreams that we once knew
Whatever happened to us
Did we grow up too fast?
Well, I don’t want to be
Whatever they decided for me
And I don’t want to feel
The way it’s making me feel

We are, we are, we are
We are born to the stars, we are
We are never to stop
Never to stop
Even when it scares us
We are, we are, we are
We are given a chance we are
We are never to stop
Never to stop
We are the only chance we’ve got

Whatever happened to
The brave and beautiful
The hope in songs & books
Discovering the universe
Well I don’t want to be
Their sensible version of me
And I don’t want to feel
The way it’s making me feel

Whatever happened to
The dreams that we once knew
Whatever happened to our childlike wonder
I need to feel the light
The hunger for this life
The beauty lies inside
So go and find it.
___

Marina tells us, "I wrote 'Born to the Stars' during a dark moment in my life, but this song helped me get through it. Every time I sing it, I feel strong, empowered and inspired. If you feel inspired too, please share. I'm honored to have cameos by several amazing people whose spirit and determination I admire tremendously."

There's a long list of those artists making cameos in the music video. Among them are several folkies. Because we 'spect you're about to go watch it, here's the list of people to look for in the video, along with Marina and Nick: Manda Mosher (Calico The Band); Shannon Hurley & Ben Eisen (Lovers & Poets); Jill Sobule; Jim Kimo West (Hawaiian Slack Key/Weird Al); Bruce Kulick (KISS/Grand Funk Railroad); Jack Douglas (John Lennon, Aerosmith); Steve Horner; Steel Panther; David Ellefson (Megadeth); Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie); Astrid Plane (Animotion); Sandro Monetti (writer/journalist); Eliina Nicole (Regain Your Voice); Marci Chiarandini (Las Vegas Public Library); Katya Tsyganova; Elke James; Raggi Olafsson (Árstíðir); Cole Coleman; Ali McManus & band; Nikhil Korula.

The video was produced by Steve Horner and directed & edited by Katya Tsyganova. Guest vocals by Árstíðir. Filmed at Studio 519, Redondo Beach, CA.

Here's the link. Enjoy. And watch out, because you might just get inspired.
