Music (& Art) on TV today & this week, Sep 10 2017

It may seem insensitive to write about music the day before the anniversary of 9/11. But if anyone wants to wax poetic (or patriotic) about that being offensive to their sensibilities, we would suggest that, after all that has transpired since 2001, any dialogue or presentation must necessarily be inclusive on the ensuing era of unnecessary and endless war that has accomplished nothing but bankrupting all the hopes and dreams of our entire society, while enriching war profiteers through the glued-to-the-Pentagon-tit corporatocracy. Since we are sparing you the discussion of the latter, we will therefore decline to wave the flag for the former.

We believe the best way to honor those in uniform is to express our appreciation in the same way we do for all those in service to society: honor their service by respecting the value of their willingness to serve, and not by wasting their lives in exercises of lunacy. (Hence, emergency responders are NOT being sent to rescue those who failed to heed the call to evacuate in the face of a killer hurricane; too bad our powers-that-be do not have similar values when it comes to those serving in our military forces.)

A few words about the News and the latest disaster

This edition being about music-on-TV, we must add this. It's not that we are publishing while insensitive to the needs of fellow citizens dealing with a major hurricane hitting Florida. It is the second of three major hurricanes already in this year's just-begun Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico hurricane season; all three catastrophic events, all three made especially intense by, and probably actually caused by, the growing effects of Global Climate Change -- even if Rick Scott, the Governor of Florida, made it an offense that gets any employee of his state fired for using the phrases "Climate Change" or "Climate Chaos." As if being intransigently certain has anything to do with scientific facts. But the people of Florida -- including the seven million currently evacuated people of Florida -- elected him.

All that said, if your brain is on overload from the endlessly droning coverage on TV that has, for the past 60+ hours straight, pre-empted damn near all the other news of the world; if you just can't take any more of mainstream broadcast media's endless pursuit of seeing how many ways they can word the same information for the 219th consecutive regurgitation... Then you just might be ready for an interlude of sanity by tuning-in to some music and arts-related TV programming.

Of course, we always advocate that you put down the techno devices and commit the revolutionary act of going outside without taking anything electronic with you. (At least try it once, long enough to trek to, and partake of, a live music performance!)

Okay, we tried. If you're reconciled to staying indoors, here are our recommendations for good stuff on TV today and tonight (with some repeats noted that happen through the coming week).

1-2:30 pm "MONTEREY POP: SUMMER OF LOVE" (2007) on KCET is an episode of the PBS series, "The American Experience." It is an acclaimed music documentary by D.A. Pennebaker that recalls the June 1967 Monterey Pop Festival that launched the "Summer of Love." (The Guide gave it a rave review in 2007, for its premiere, and again when it first re-aired this summer.)

1:30-2 pm "NATIVE REPORT" (2017) airs an episode on KLCS4 with "Native American Music Award" winner Keith Secola, who performs an acoustic set.

2:30-4 pm "SINATRA: THE VOICE OF OUR TIME" (1991) on KCET is a music bio with lots of performances, old and new. A real treasure and very illuminating about the anonymous philanthropy and influences "The Chairman of the Board" had on many, many people, in and out of the arts, all the way to the 1960 campaign of JFK for the presidency.

3 pm "HILLBILLY ELEGY" on C-SPAN 2. In his book, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis," J.D. Vance recalls his childhood in a Rust Belt town in Ohio. He spoke at the 17th annual National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.

3 pm "AMERICAN REVOLUTION 1760 TO 1778" on C-SPAN 3 is a one-hour tour of exhibits at the new "Museum of the American Revolution" which opened in April 2017 in Philadelphia. The tour is led by R. Scott Stephenson, VP of Collections, Exhibitions & Programming. (We include this one for all you museum fans, which are plentiful among music lovers.) These core exhibits feature artifacts, multimedia presentations and interpretation of the story of the first half of the American Revolution, from 1760 to 1778.
