Art exhibition: "COYOTE LEAVES THE RES: THE ART OF HARRY FONSECA" at the Autry Museum of the American West, across from the L.A. Zoo in Griffith Park, at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027
* Featuring paintings, sketches, and lithographs, this exhibition focuses on the recurring figure of Coyote, a trickster, shape shifter, and storyteller capable of moving undetected between different worlds.
* Fonseca was an instrumental force in reshaping Native art with his trademark blend of traditional imagery, contemporary experience, and vibrant color and form. As he used his art to explore both his personal journey and the role of history in shaping Native consciousness in the present, Fonseca sought to expand definitions of American Indian art and to shatter the expectations and stereotypes that had long confined it.
* As both a gay man and a person of mixed heritage, Fonseca used his work as a vehicle for self-discovery a means of navigating different aspects of his life and identity during a time when ideas about Native peoples were often driven by outside forces, including commercial markets, tourism, and historical clichés.

10 am-10 pm - "UNION STATION 80th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION" at Union Station Los Angeles, 800 N Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
* When it opened in 1939 as Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, it was the last of the great train stations built in America. Three railroads each had their own separate station until then -- the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Be, the Southern Pacific, and the Union Pacific.
* Designed in a bold combination of Mission Revival,
Art Deco, Moderne, and other architechtectural elements, the station was as dramatic then as it is now. It was nearly torn down in the early 1970s, as passenger trains had all but vanished until the coming of Amtrak and the later commuter rail renaissance.
* Now, we celebrate all the station has been, and all it will yet become.
* At 10 am and 11 am on Saturday, docents from Metro Arts will be conducting two art and architecture tours to showcase the splendor of the station. Tours will start in the station’s East Portal ajacent to the aquarium.
* From 3:30-9 pm, the Historic Ticket Concourse will become a hub of live entertainment featuring some of L.A.’s favorite bands including 30s and 40s jazz classics from Hothouse, big band funk from Phil Ranelin, Ska from Western Standard and the pan-Latin sound of Buyepongo.
* Unfortunately, the three best bands all played a shorter celebration schedule on Friday:
CALIFORNIA FEETWARMERS, THE NEW RECESSIONAIRES, and JAZZY ASH.
* There's food sand cocktail specials, an operating modular model railroad, limited-edition Union Station anniversary T-shirts and merchandise.
* From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the North Patio will be transformed into a Family Fun Zone including a Griffith Park Travel Town activity corner, a Giggle Factory play zone and a kids’ concert series featuring a workshop from Rhythm Child and performances from Angel Bird and Jazzy Ash.
* From 10 am-8 pm the station’s majestic South Patio will become a lively marketplace showcasing local artists and artisans with L.A.-inspired art, crafts and gifts including Angel City Press, Lit Soul Candles and Self Help Graphics and featuring live music from Soul Fab (DJs John Gregory) SOL!D Selectors ( DJ Mick Cole), DJ Funky Soul, urban soul from KCRW’s Raul Campos (with guest DJs) and performances from Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles and Latin soul band Jungle Fire.
* A Living Gallery will feature an electronic photo retrospective of the station’s storied past.
* The city’s hottest food trucks and a festive picnic area will provide guests with a diverse and delicious taste of L.A. throughout the day.

150th anniversary of the driving of the GOLDEN SPIKE, completing the first transcontinental railroad at remote Promontory Summit, Utah, will be re-enacted May 10 at the exact time, and again on Sat & Sun, May 11 & 12, all on the exact same site. A THREE-DAY FESTIVAL at Golden Spike National Historic Site, hosted by the National Park Service, and another parallel FESTIVAL in Ogden, Utah, co-hosted by the local community and the Union Pacific Railroad beginning May 9th, are centerpiece events.
* The Golden Spike climaxed the feat of the age -- the transcontinental railroad -- every bit as dramatic an accomplishment in 1869 as the Moon landing was a hundred years later in 1969.

* When the last spike was driven, everything changed in a single moment. Suddenly, it took a week to travel coast-to-coast. Before that moment, it took months overland by ox-drawn covered wagon, or weeks by steamship around the bottom of South America (there was no Panama Canal yet, and there wouldn't be for decades).
* With replica steam locomotives, actors portraying each person in the famous photo, and a festival with live music of the era, THIS is irresistible for some (including our editor).
* For the 150th anniversary, a lot is going on. In Ogden, Utah on May 9th, a stylistically similar event will be held with two giants from the late age of steam. Union Pacific will ceremonially stage a head-to-head meeting of 4-8-4 "Northern" number 844, and just-restored 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" number 4014. The two will run from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ogden, under their own steam.

| Returning to the very rails for which it was built, the "Big Boy" will make a commemorative run from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ogden, Utah. It will mark the return of number 4014 after decades of stuffed-and-mounted display at Fairplex in Pomona, CA. The world's largest steam locomotive will mimic the Promontory event one day earlier, coming head-to-head with "Heritage Fleet" icon number 844, another giant of WWII-era steam. |
* "Big Boy" number 4014 sat in the LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS IN POMONA, stuffed-and-mounted on display for decades.
* When the giant "Big Boy" emerges from rebuild in the Cheyenne roundhouse to run to Utah, in stsgrs, starting Mat 5th, it will be back on the very route for which its type was built, and it will again be the largest operating locomotive in the world.
