December music! "Giving Tuesday," Caroling for Shut-ins, and events calendar update. Dec 3 2019 edition

.
.
THE events calendar in this edition is obsolete, as of Friday morning, Dec 13th.

The most current EVENTS EDITION is now at this link, where it is frequently updated (with more events added all the time) until it is eventually replaced by a newer events edition.
___

It's time for an EVENTS UPDATE, and time to focus on what's special, post-Thanksgiving.

So we open with TWO things that'll bring you warm fuzzies inside, if you take part.

☆  The first is "GIVING TUESDAY," today.

☆  The second is the annual CAROLING FOR SHUT-INS, which kicks-off in Los Angeles on Sunday, Dec 8, then moves across the country, and into Canada, between now and Christmas. In L.A., and everywhere else, it works because YOU COME OUT AND TAKE PART, lending your singing voice to delight some folks who often lead a lonely existence.

You can make a difference on both special days -- info is just below.
___

QUICK NOTE: this edition replaces our earlier events editions, AND you can still read our NEWS FEATURES and anything else we've ever published. It's all in our permanent archive. Just see the navigation bar at left (bring-uo the "full web edition"). We also have a search window for you...

Giving Tuesday

Today, Dec 3rd, is "GIVING TUESDAY." It's the annual day in the week following Thanksgiving that is dedicated to helping others -- instead of to self-indulgently spending money and going into debt. (See our feature story published on Friday, "Turning  'Black Friday' & 'Cyber Monday' GREEN.")

We are 'uge advocates for GIVING TUESDAY, but THERE IS REASON FOR CAUTION. The Cyberian realm is filled with evermore sophisticated SCAMMERS. They are very capable of spoofing email addresses and misappropriating graphics and logos to embed in their own clicklinks. Which lets them steal by impersonating legitimate charities, environmental organizations, and human need campaigns for everything from hunger to sending an impoverished child to school, to fighting diseases.

SO, HERE'S HOW YOU BEAT THOSE PREDATORY SCAMMERS:

    (1) Never, never, NEVER give money through a clicklink-response to any email, period -- even if the sender's address appears to check-out. Instead, open a separate browser window (preferably using a browser that does not track you and sell your data in a cyber dossier -- meaning, use a browser like Startpage or DuckDuckGo) and search for the organization to get its real site and its legitimate donations page.

     (2) Go to www.irs.gov to see if a "cancer charity," "historic preservation society," or "wildlife fund" is registered as a nonprofit that is  qualified to receive tax-deductible donations.

You'll note that we do not presume to suggest where to give your money or volunteer your time and talents for the coming year. Many worthy causes await, and you've probably got a full inbox from some of them. (And some claiming to be them.)

Make your hard-earned bucks, bitcoins, shekels, rupees, Euros and dinars do good for the many, and not enrich the crafty crooked scammers.
___

TUNEAGE for "Giving Tuesday"

There's an old song that fits the real message of GIVING TUESDAY. Written by Hal David & Burt Bacharach, it was made famous when sung by Jackie DeShannon: "What the World Needs Now."

Take a moment for positive messaging in musical delight with the lyrics here, and the music vid here.

Friday
________________________

Greta Thunberg's image was already a banner for activists before she arrived
at the "Conference of Parties" (COP) 25 meeting of world leaders to address
Climate Change. The US administration, alone, is officially unrepresented.
Today is the "other half" of the 4th global climate change protest / extinction rebellion strike that we featured in the Guide in time for last Friday's first half of the two-consecutive-Fridays event.

Life on our planet is at the most critical crossroads since anyone considered a massive nuclear strike. Too many of our fellow humans are infatuated with transitory BS -- with pop culture and celebrities and expensive addiction to whatever is momentarily fashionable, and to buying into it before it goes out of vogue. Meanwhile the planet is hotter than it has ever been since human cultures arose, as evidenced by ancient, 40,000-year-old, ice layers that allow us to make such determinations.

Every major study, including the latest (huge) one released just days ago by the UN, tells us we are nearly past a tipping point of no return with the fatal imbalance of greenhouse gases produced by human activity. Yet, politicians in every nation are dependent upon the biggest economic interests for their re-election campaign cash, and industrialists notoriously finance climate change denial.

Will the Earth's cultures, civilizations, and populations awaken in time? Often little things are the best indicators, especially when they function as "tastemakers." One thing that will be very telling is the announcement of the TIME magazine "Person of the Year." It comes out next week, on Dec 11.

Sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activism icon GRETA THUNBERG is one of the nominees, and we announced over a week ago, she is clearly our choice.

If TIME magazine picks Trump or some kingpin capitalist bastard, that will scream to us pretty much all we need to know about taste-making in America.

We must acknowledge that TIME's pick isn't always a humanitarian or champion of betterment. It can be far from it, going back to when they named Adolph Hitler as "Man of the Year" in the 1930s.

But the point in picking the person
is supposed to be choosing someone who has had (or is having) the most enduring impact on the world.

Thus, we say that must be GRETA THUNBERG, because she is the first (and so far the only) one to mobilize millions of people -- people of every age, on every continent, including Antarctica -- to demand immediate and effective action to redirect and mobilize resources to address and reverse climate change.

And let's be absolutely clear, whether or not anyone accuses us of sensationalism:

Whatever sociopolitical or economic or cultural causes or issues anyone is passionate about? Unless we REVERSE climate change, everything else is simply re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

To this day, the wreck of the USS Arizona continues to bleed oil from her fuel bunkers into the waters of Pearl Harbor. The vessel was sunk by a Japanese aerial bomb that killed most of her crew during the surprise attack of Dec 7, 1941.
On the Arizona alone, 1,177 died and over 900 of them are still interred there; 335 of her crew survived. (999 Photo)
On this day in 1941, naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan suddenly and deliberately attacked Pearl Harbor and other military and civilian installations on the island of Oahu, in (the then-US Territory of) Hawai'i. The US Navy's Pacific Fleet was destroyed. America was plunged into an ongoing and raging global war it had tried to avoid. By the time of that war's conclusion, the Empire of Nazi Germany, the Empire of Fascist Italy, the Empire of Japan, and the colonial empires of Britain and France were in ruin. Only the American empire -- created by its involvement in the war -- emerged as an industrial juggernaut, and only the Soviet Union would rebuild quickly enough to challenge American dominance in all the places the collapsed empires had been. Colonialist holds on China were gone, and that nation began its march to becoming a global power, at first by closing its borders and forgetting its rich history.

Actions often have unintended consequences, for those taking them, those responding to them, and those caught up in things beyond their control. Certainly that applies to nations and to actions taken by each and every one of us.

Democracies replaced fascist and overtly authoritarian states in the wake of World War II. Yet today, the monetization of universal cyberspying, monitoring and tracking, and the maintenance and continuous sale of cyber dossiers on behavior, travel, purchases and preferences of every man, woman, and child, thoroughly undermine the notion of freedom won by defeating fascist states.

On December 7th, 2019, we face threats unimaginable to all but George Orwell -- and he never imagined our runaway industrialization would threaten the planet's ability to sustain our life forms. It is there, in those needs for action, that we should find the essential legacy of Pearl Harbor. In looking past the obfuscation designed to distract and mislead. In remaining vigilant about what actually threatens the future. In stopping to think what the real threats are. And in not having it defined for you by an exploitive warconomy or an opportunistic and predatory empire of profitable denial. Or inescapable monitoring and manipulative predictive analytics.

Today is INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY, established by the United Nations in 2003 and observed every year since then on December 9th. This year, six nations have committed to lead the push to ban shell companies, dirty money, and economic and political power moves by hidden manipulators and clandestine interests. Interestingly enough, one of those six countries is Ukraine. But corporate oligarchs in the US have prevented America from joining the six countries who are demanding completely open business practices. Of course, we can’t tackle the climate crisis without tackling corruption, and that focus (from transparency.org) is here, while an overview of the full scope of things is here (from Corruption Watch).

Thursday
________________________

Today is election day throughout the United Kingdom. Everything is at stake, as the Conservative Party government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeks to retain control and complete his nation's separation from the European Union through a rancorous and difficult "Brexit."

Chief challenger Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour Party would hold a national referendum vote on whether to Brexit or reverse course and remain in the EU.

Liberal Democratic Party leader Jo Swinson, like Corbyn and his party, wants to reverse 18 years of austerity imposed by Conservative rule.

Issues include whether full funding will be restored for their nation's famous National Health system, and whether more privatization of national assets will occur, or be stopped with lost public resources reclaimed from private profiteers.

But, just as in America, facts are jumbled with vilifications and smears and fears. The people of Britain, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and several small islands, are sharply divided among themselves and between regions.

Election campaigns in the UK, by law, can last only a few weeks, so apparent trends vanish quickly. The pollsters final prognostications indicate that anything can happen.

Friday
________________________

TODAY is Friday the 13th. It acquired its wicked, ominous reputation from actual history.

On this date in 1307, the king of France ordered the sudden and brutal imprisonment of every member of the Knights Templar. Though the Knights had enjoyed Papal sanction to operate as the world's first international bank, the Pope was taken virtual prisoner by the French king to neutralize Rome's authority.

That happened because the king was a reckless spender enamored with shiny objects. He was also a tantrum-prone emotional adolescent, drunk on his own power (before there was impeachment) and he owed everybody money.

By abusing his power as head-of-state to pursue his personal interests -- taking prisoner, holding hostage in dungeons, and torturing the Templars, he was sure his extortion scheme would force them to produce all the money in their banks.

They didn't, and he exterminated them. Except, that is, for the ones who escaped -- purportedly with the Templar riches that remain lost to this day.
___

Today in 2019 -- this specific Friday the 13th -- goes into the history books for two things:

1)  in the US: The Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives voted along partisan lines to adopt two Articles of Impeachment against the President of the United States.
The full House will vote on them in the coming week.
The Articles are certain to be adopted there, which will produce an Impeachment Trial in the US Senate.
But in the Senate, Trump is certain to get off because the Senate Majority Leader has announced he will violate his Constitutionally-required oath of impartiality and collude with the defendant to get him off.

2)  In the UK: The results of yesterday's national election in the UK have produced a political earthquake.
The Conservative Party has won their largest majority since Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. Britain's Brexit from the European Union, by January 31, is now a certainty.
The Labour Party lost big, even in its traditional strongholds. Further privatization of national assets will continue.
But that's not the entire story, because the UK has a multi-party system.
Liberal Democratic Party leader Jo Swinson lost her seat to a member of the "SNP" -- the Scottish National Party. Moreover, Scotland wanted to remain in the EU, and it will mount a reinvigorated effort to secede from the UK and become independent.
Likewise for Northern Ireland, where newly-elected Irish Nationalists outnumber Unionists for the first time ever. With most of the Emerald Isle comprising the independent Republic of Ireland -- an EU member -- nobody wants a hard border to return and risk renewal of "The Troubles" there.
So, Boris Johnson and his Conservatives may soon find themselves governing a much smaller nation. Sorta like the US without California, Oregon, Washington, and Massachusetts.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, by one born on this date...

(Sure to register with everyone who shakes their head at the contradictory assortment of obstructionist stupidities, emotionally-driven reactive fear of "foreigners," and the headlong rush to over-reliance on technology to save us from ourselves)

-- Ross Macdonald, novelist (born Dec 13, 1915, died in 1983)

8 pm - "A TAYLOR MADE TAPESTRY" with CARLA BUFFA as "Carole King" and STEPHEN BOCK as "James Taylor," at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena CA 91001
*  This very specifically re-creates the Carole King & James Taylor Troubadour reunion show of 2007.
*  Carole King has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She wrote several Top Ten hits for various groups with her partner and husband Gerry Goffin during the '60s, and in 1971, her "Tapestry" album became the top-selling pop solo album ever and held that position until Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in 1982. Over the course of her long career, she has penned over 400 songs that have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists.
*  James Taylor rose to fame in the '70s when he became known for writing and performing sensitive, affecting songs. Over the course of a long-running career, Taylor has won five Grammy Awards and seen many of his albums go platinum. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received a National Medal of the Arts in 2011. Taylor continues to be esteemed as a songwriter and performer whose work speaks to people's inner emotional lives.
*  But, thing of it is, you're gonna pay a lot of money and get nosebleed seats to go see either one of 'em. Now, we aren't big on "tribute acts," but... we like this concept, of a single, re-created night when the two artists shared a stage.
*  Reservations by phone only, 7 days, 10 am-10 pm: 626-798-6236
*  TIX, $20

Sat, Dec 14:
3 pm matinee - THE ASH GROVE PLAYERS at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena CA 91001
*  They perform authentic American roots music -- folk, country, blues and bluegrass that will uplift your spirit, and stir your soul.
*  This is history coming full-circle. The group takes inspiration from the many historic roots musicians that passed through the doors of the famed and long-lost Ash Grove Music Club on Melrose Avenue in 1950s and '60s Los Angeles. Today, the Coffee Gallery Backstage is the L.A. area's premiere acoustic music performance venue, so of course they must play here.
*  These six talented and seasoned singers and musicians play a variety of instruments, taking great traditional songs and giving them new life.
*  Featured are Claudia Lennear (vocals and background vocals), SS Jones (vocals, banjo and guitar), Steve Moos (vocals, mandolin and guitar), Eric Ahlberg (vocals and bass), David Fertig (harmonica), and Jeff Landau (guitar). The band started as a project of the Ash Grove Music Foundation.
*  During the seventies, Claudia Lennear was a musical pioneer who sang background vocals across the genres on stage, and recorded with Ike and Tina Turner, Allen Toussaint, the Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, George Harrison, Elton John, Steven Stills, Taj Mahal, and many others.
*  Claudia worked professionally with many of the producers and sidemen musicians who developed the fundamental character of the late '60s and '70s pop music scene, both in the United States and England.
*  Journalists have documented that Lennear was the muse for songs written by Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Leon Russell. Lennear affirms “Brown Sugar,” “Lady Grinning Soul,” “A Song for You,” “Masquerade,” and “She Smiles Like a River” as being inspired by her presence.
*  The Ash Grove Players performed to rave reviews at the Pete Seeger Memorial Concert produced by the Ash Grove Music Foundation in 2014. They performed their Lead Belly tribute show featuring SS Jones at the opening event of the Lead Belly Exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Last year they performed at the Levitt Pavillion Concert in Pasadena, and this year at the Levitt Pavillion, McArthur Park, sharing the bill with the Chambers Brothers Band. Recently they did a sold-out show at McCabe's.

*  They are one group, five master singer-songwriters, with ten great new songs covering a range of styles, all coming together in one very satisfying record.
*  Tall Men Group don't just have a new record. They deliver the goods again with “5”, their fifth album in eight years. What’s most remarkable about this band is that it consists of five singer-songwriters who combine to write fifty (count 'em) new songs a year.
*  The ten very best of those songs, deemed most worthy of recording, are featured on this, their latest CD, entitled “5.” Each song features the unique timbre of its writer’s vocal performance and lyrics that tell a compelling story, supported by full-band arrangements and exceptional harmony vocals.
*  Styles range from stone country (“Mending Scars”) to neo-soul (“Soul Quake”) to power pop (“Weak Days”) to folk-rock (“Stranger Stranded”) to r&b ballad (“Better Not Call”).
*  That variety is part of what keeps TMG’s devoted fans coming back for more, and the quality of the songwriting keeps the music high on everyone’s playlist. Think of the Traveling Wilburys to get an idea of a band with this many widely-recorded singer-songwriters. The Tall Men might just be at the peak of their game with this new collection.

Mon, Dec 16, Back East:
Annual reenactment of the BOSTON TEA PARTY at the harbor in Boston, MA
*  No, not the goofball modern privately-owned (for the profit of the few owners) "Tea Party" that isn't a real political party and should have stuck with the name they originally called themselves: "The Teabaggers."
*  THIS, in Boston, is a raucous historical reenactment that pitches fake bundles of tea from square-rigged sailing ships into the harbor, just like the 1775 rebellion. Except then it was real tea, when everybody drank tea like they drink coffee now. So they were putting their mouths where they money would have gone, to rebel against Britain's taxation without representation.

Happy New Year
__________________________________

2020 will be a crossroads for human societies, planetary ecosystems, and whether science and intellect -- or superstitution, innuendo and fear -- will prevail. We can all be sure that the coming year's realities will be enough to make all the breathless headlines seem second-tier, at best. An impeachment trial. Rancorous primary elections. The certainty of shenanigans -- including in caucuses that determine party nominees -- by desperate partisan establishment types and their corporatist funders.

We will see shockingly unprecedented amounts poured into manufacturing public opinion, in the still-new, already big-bucks, no-fact-checks marketplace of spyware-laden social media; and of course in all the old places where persuasive lies profitably prevail to buy election outcomes. And that stuff will continue all year, through the general election in November.

There are things awaiting us that are as necessary as a root canal, things we must get past to reach what really matters. Things like overcoming all money cleverly spent on Climate Change denial by oligarchs employing psychological warfare masters, as the world burns.

Planetary desertification is expanding. Ocean fisheries are shrinking. Wildly destructive weather events are becoming more normal. Waves of climate refugee migrants will continue overwhelming national borders and global relief agencies. Racism, misogyny, sexism, age discrimination, health care access, prescription drug costs, gasoline prices, new car costs, jobs that offer benefits, and voter obstruction, are all trending in alarming directions.

Social media will keep "trending" us beneath avalanches of anesthetizing bs, and purport to rescue us with distraction mechanisms of lie-driven outrage. Skyrocketing housing costs will keep increasing homelessness among us as the number of landlords gets smaller and grows richer. More college grads who can't use their education to benefit society will be disillusioned because crushing student debt means, instead, they must do what compensates well enough to pay-off those debts by the time they're 40.

And sadly, all these things are guaranteed to happen whether or not the Wall Street bankster/ manipulators -- together with exploitive rulers of desperate nations -- keep finding ways to increase their bloated fortunes. All, while Rome, and everyplace else, burns.

"Happy New Year"-? Only if we roll up our sleeves and fight to make it one.

*  It was a time of flappers, speak-easies, popular songs with "naughty" lyrics, rejection of imposed moral standards that had prevented personal choices, and, in general, so much social upheaval that those taking part were deemed "The Lost Generation." Sun, Jan 19; FESTIVAL:
2 pm - 13th annual "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SLACK KEY FESTIVAL" celebrates bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to the mainland, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Bl (at Aviation Bl), Redondo Beach CA  90278
*  SLACK KEY -- Hawaiian "ki ho'alu" is one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. Played from the heart and soul through the fingers and flowing with vivid tropical images, the festival lets you listen and learn the fascinating history of ki ho’alu guitar and the musical pioneers who helped shape its sound and legacy.
*  Produced by Kala Koa Entertainment, the festival includes an "Island Marketplace."
*  Showcasing GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers, and the free-to-the-public Island Marketplace, this is one of the most acclaimed concerts to leave the islands.
*  The first of its kind anywhere outside of Hawaii, the Southern California Slack Key Festival continues to set milestones for Hawaiian music on the mainland. Since its debut in 2008, it has garnered a huge loyal following, creating, cultivating, and renewing interest in Hawaii and its music.
* This year’s line-up includes JOHN KEAWE, JERRY SANTOS, KAMUELA KIMOKEO, THE LIM FAMILY, IKAIKA MARZO, BOBBY MODEROW, JEFF PETERSON, ANTHONY PFLUKE, and BOBBY INGANO.
*  Ki ho'alu literally means "loosen the key." It is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
*  How does the distinctive sound of slack key music fit into the fabric of Hawaiian music and culture? Watch this video and learn more about this beautiful generations-old art form – https://vimeo.com/155399448.
*  In addition to the concert, an Island Marketplace – free to the public – takes place from 11 am-5 pm. You can browse a variety of island-themed gifts, home décor, accessories, apparel, and more. Plus, there's Hawaiian food, authentic island-style shave ice, and outdoor entertainment.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS – and views of interest to artists everywhere – more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers -- and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
