☆ The second is the annual CAROLING FOR SHUT-INS, which kicks-off in Los Angeles on Sunday, Dec 8, then moves across the country, and into Canada, between now and Christmas. In L.A., and everywhere else, it works because YOU COME OUT AND TAKE PART, lending your singing voice to delight some folks who often lead a lonely existence.

Giving Tuesday
Today, Dec 3rd, is "GIVING TUESDAY." It's the annual day in the week following Thanksgiving that is dedicated to helping others -- instead of to self-indulgently spending money and going into debt. (See our feature story published on Friday, "Turning 'Black Friday' & 'Cyber Monday' GREEN.")
We are 'uge advocates for GIVING TUESDAY, but THERE IS REASON FOR CAUTION. The Cyberian realm is filled with evermore sophisticated SCAMMERS. They are very capable of spoofing email addresses and misappropriating graphics and logos to embed in their own clicklinks. Which lets them steal by impersonating legitimate charities, environmental organizations, and human need campaigns for everything from hunger to sending an impoverished child to school, to fighting diseases.
SO, HERE'S HOW YOU BEAT THOSE PREDATORY SCAMMERS:
(1) Never, never, NEVER give money through a clicklink-response to any email, period -- even if the sender's address appears to check-out. Instead, open a separate browser window (preferably using a browser that does not track you and sell your data in a cyber dossier -- meaning, use a browser like Startpage or DuckDuckGo) and search for the organization to get its real site and its legitimate donations page.
(2) Go to www.irs.gov to see if a "cancer charity," "historic preservation society," or "wildlife fund" is registered as a nonprofit that is qualified to receive tax-deductible donations.
You'll note that we do not presume to suggest where to give your money or volunteer your time and talents for the coming year. Many worthy causes await, and you've probably got a full inbox from some of them. (And some claiming to be them.)
Make your hard-earned bucks, bitcoins, shekels, rupees, Euros and dinars do good for the many, and not enrich the crafty crooked scammers.

- 38th annual PARTICIPATORY EVENT
Sunday-Sunday-SUNDAY, December 8, you are invited to take part in this PARTICIPATION BENEFIT that will remind you why you once thought the Christmas / Hanukkah season was special. Because you'll make it special again, for those whose days are too often empty.
Starting at 4 pm - on a modular schedule -- you can join in the 38th annual "HOLIDAY CAROLING FESTIVITIES" for shut-ins, in Los Angeles, California.
This special afternoon and evening kicks-off two weeks of national participatory performance events in this series.
* Performances are at multiple venues (ranging from nursing homes to assisted living facilities) all in the nearby area (participants carpool with folks taking part that they are just meeting -- it's that kind of spirit.
* Take part in some, or all: 4 pm, 5:30 pm, and/or 6:3Some,
* "Cast party" dinner / social time follows for all participants.
* Experience the power, magic, and impact of giving music like you never have for any other audience. Everyone from full-time music pros to folks who sing in the shower are invited to MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
* Longtime producer Vincent Leinen says, "YOU are extended a special invitation to participate at senior care centers -- performing on our modular schedule, you can arrive/depart at your discretion.
* At the first stop, the entire cast breaks into small groups to perform room-to-room for literal shut-ins, some bedridden, some in wheelchairs.
* Each subsequent stop, the cast performs a "stage show" in the facilities' dining halls.
* All "venues" are located in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
* Immediately following the caroling, participants are invited to socialize and dine (new site this year, since the longtime dinner venue has closed): convene at IHOP Restaurant at Vanowen & Fallbrook, in West Hills CA (7:30 pm-9:30 pm).

Life on our planet is at the most critical crossroads since anyone considered a massive nuclear strike. Too many of our fellow humans are infatuated with transitory BS -- with pop culture and celebrities and expensive addiction to whatever is momentarily fashionable, and to buying into it before it goes out of vogue. Meanwhile the planet is hotter than it has ever been since human cultures arose, as evidenced by ancient, 40,000-year-old, ice layers that allow us to make such determinations.
Every major study, including the latest (huge) one released just days ago by the UN, tells us we are nearly past a tipping point of no return with the fatal imbalance of greenhouse gases produced by human activity. Yet, politicians in every nation are dependent upon the biggest economic interests for their re-election campaign cash, and industrialists notoriously finance climate change denial.
Will the Earth's cultures, civilizations, and populations awaken in time? Often little things are the best indicators, especially when they function as "tastemakers." One thing that will be very telling is the announcement of the TIME magazine "Person of the Year." It comes out next week, on Dec 11.
Sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activism icon GRETA THUNBERG is one of the nominees, and we announced over a week ago, she is clearly our choice.
If TIME magazine picks Trump or some kingpin capitalist bastard, that will scream to us pretty much all we need to know about taste-making in America.
We must acknowledge that TIME's pick isn't always a humanitarian or champion of betterment. It can be far from it, going back to when they named Adolph Hitler as "Man of the Year" in the 1930s.
But the point in picking the person is supposed to be choosing someone who has had (or is having) the most enduring impact on the world.
Thus, we say that must be GRETA THUNBERG, because she is the first (and so far the only) one to mobilize millions of people -- people of every age, on every continent, including Antarctica -- to demand immediate and effective action to redirect and mobilize resources to address and reverse climate change.
And let's be absolutely clear, whether or not anyone accuses us of sensationalism:
Whatever sociopolitical or economic or cultural causes or issues anyone is passionate about? Unless we REVERSE climate change, everything else is simply re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

| To this day, the wreck of the USS Arizona continues to bleed oil from her fuel bunkers into the waters of Pearl Harbor. The vessel was sunk by a Japanese aerial bomb that killed most of her crew during the surprise attack of Dec 7, 1941. On this day in 1941, naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan suddenly and deliberately attacked Pearl Harbor and other military and civilian installations on the island of Oahu, in (the then-US Territory of) Hawai'i. The US Navy's Pacific Fleet was destroyed. America was plunged into an ongoing and raging global war it had tried to avoid. By the time of that war's conclusion, the Empire of Nazi Germany, the Empire of Fascist Italy, the Empire of Japan, and the colonial empires of Britain and France were in ruin. Only the American empire -- created by its involvement in the war -- emerged as an industrial juggernaut, and only the Soviet Union would rebuild quickly enough to challenge American dominance in all the places the collapsed empires had been. Colonialist holds on China were gone, and that nation began its march to becoming a global power, at first by closing its borders and forgetting its rich history.
Actions often have unintended consequences, for those taking them, those responding to them, and those caught up in things beyond their control. Certainly that applies to nations and to actions taken by each and every one of us.
Democracies replaced fascist and overtly authoritarian states in the wake of World War II. Today is election day throughout the United Kingdom. Everything is at stake, as the Conservative Party government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeks to retain control and complete his nation's separation from the European Union through a rancorous and difficult "Brexit."
Chief challenger Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour Party would hold a national referendum vote on whether to Brexit or reverse course and remain in the EU.
Liberal Democratic Party leader Jo Swinson, like Corbyn and his party, wants to reverse 18 years of austerity imposed by Conservative rule.
Issues include whether full funding will be restored for their nation's famous National Health system, and whether more privatization of national assets will occur, or be stopped with lost public resources reclaimed from private profiteers.
But, just as in America, facts are jumbled with vilifications and smears and fears. The people of Britain, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and several small islands, are sharply divided among themselves and between regions.
Election campaigns in the UK, by law, can last only a few weeks, so apparent trends vanish quickly. The pollsters final prognostications indicate that anything can happen.

TODAY is Friday the 13th. It acquired its wicked, ominous reputation from actual history.
On this date in 1307, the king of France ordered the sudden and brutal imprisonment of every member of the Knights Templar. Though the Knights had enjoyed Papal sanction to operate as the world's first international bank, the Pope was taken virtual prisoner by the French king to neutralize Rome's authority.
That happened because the king was a reckless spender enamored with shiny objects. He was also a tantrum-prone emotional adolescent, drunk on his own power (before there was impeachment) and he owed everybody money.
By abusing his power as head-of-state to pursue his personal interests -- taking prisoner, holding hostage in dungeons, and torturing the Templars, he was sure his extortion scheme would force them to produce all the money in their banks.
They didn't, and he exterminated them. Except, that is, for the ones who escaped -- purportedly with the Templar riches that remain lost to this day.

Though the Knights had enjoyed Papal sanction to operate as the world's first international bank, the Pope was taken virtual prisoner by the French king to neutralize Rome's authority.
That happened because the king was a reckless spender enamored with shiny objects. He was also a tantrum-prone emotional adolescent, drunk on his own power (before there was impeachment) and he owed everybody money.
By abusing his power as head-of-state to pursue his personal interests -- taking prisoner, holding hostage in dungeons, and torturing the Templars, he was sure his extortion scheme would force them to produce all the money in their banks.
They didn't, and he exterminated them. Except, that is, for the ones who escaped -- purportedly with the Templar riches that remain lost to this day.

1) in the US: The Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives voted along partisan lines to adopt two Articles of Impeachment against the President of the United States.
The full House will vote on them in the coming week.
The Articles are certain to be adopted there, which will produce an Impeachment Trial in the US Senate.
But in the Senate, Trump is certain to get off because the Senate Majority Leader has announced he will violate his Constitutionally-required oath of impartiality and collude with the defendant to get him off.

* No, not the goofball modern privately-owned (for the profit of the few owners) "Tea Party" that isn't a real political party and should have stuck with the name they originally called themselves: "The Teabaggers."
* THIS, in Boston, is a raucous historical reenactment that pitches fake bundles of tea from square-rigged sailing ships into the harbor, just like the 1775 rebellion. Except then it was real tea, when everybody drank tea like they drink coffee now. So they were putting their mouths where they money would have gone, to rebel against Britain's taxation without representation.

The certainty of shenanigans -- including in caucuses that determine party nominees -- by desperate partisan establishment types and their corporatist funders.
We will see shockingly unprecedented amounts poured into manufacturing public opinion, in the still-new, already big-bucks, no-fact-checks marketplace of spyware-laden social media; and of course in all the old places where persuasive lies profitably prevail to buy election outcomes. And that stuff will continue all year, through the general election in November.
There are things awaiting us that are as necessary as a root canal, things we must get past to reach what really matters. Things like overcoming all money cleverly spent on Climate Change denial by oligarchs employing psychological warfare masters, as the world burns.
Planetary desertification is expanding. Ocean fisheries are shrinking. Wildly destructive weather events are becoming more normal. Waves of climate refugee migrants will continue overwhelming national borders and global relief agencies. Racism, misogyny, sexism, age discrimination, health care access, prescription drug costs, gasoline prices, new car costs, jobs that offer benefits, and voter obstruction, are all trending in alarming directions.
Social media will keep "trending" us beneath avalanches of anesthetizing bs, and purport to rescue us with distraction mechanisms of lie-driven outrage. Skyrocketing housing costs will keep increasing homelessness among us as the number of landlords gets smaller and grows richer. More college grads who can't use their education to benefit society will be disillusioned because crushing student debt means, instead, they must do what compensates well enough to pay-off those debts by the time they're 40.
And sadly, all these things are guaranteed to happen whether or not the Wall Street bankster/ manipulators -- together with exploitive rulers of desperate nations -- keep finding ways to increase their bloated fortunes. All, while Rome, and everyplace else, burns.
"Happy New Year"-? Only if we roll up our sleeves and fight to make it one.

* It was a time of flappers, speak-easies, popular songs with "naughty" lyrics, rejection of imposed moral standards that had prevented personal choices, and, in general, so much social upheaval that those taking part were deemed "The Lost Generation." (Yes, it sorta was the protype for '60s counter-culture.) Those elements, celebrated for a new time, are the inspiration for this event to upend the apple cart once again, in this event produced by the Outreach Center of Antelope Valley.
