Mid December EVENTS. Tunage 'n more. Update for Dec 13 2019 & beyond

.
.
THIS EDITION IS now obsolete. The LATEST EVENTS EDITION is at:

https://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2019/12/end-of-year-live-music-wrap-up-dec-21.html

=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=÷=

Psst. Over here. We're on the downlow because we figure you're in need of a full-on, Shirley Temple, palms-to-the-cheeks, "Oh my goodness!"

You know, a rosy-cheeked wide-eyed smiling genuine "Oh my goodness!" remembrance of the wonder of life.

Instead of an "Oh, !#@*!" surrender to the pre-transformation Scrooges and Grinches.

And instead of yet another slap up 'side the head or daily sheepdip in news and views and misguided cyber "friends" that seem irreconciliby serious (at best) or a warning siren to run away and hide (more likely).

Or a Butch Cassidy, "Bolivia. We should go to Bolivia." Or even a good "Calgon, take me away!" Yeah, we get it.

So, HERE YA GO!

Much updated, with still more updates added 'purt near every day, here's all the good stuff we know about and have to share with you.

It even includes weekend opportunities to find artist-made gifts for the holidays, so you won't find yourself getting elbowed in the mall, or sequestering yourself in cyber shopping, to settle for a bunch of lookalike plastic crap. Think big, shop small, and support artists and the art they create!

Ho-ho-hidey-hidey-ho-ho-hodey-ho!

What's here, what's there...

We've published some special editions of late, and they're all still easy to find. (We proudly stand by what we said there, when we celebrated climate activism (and why consumptive consumerism cannot continue), and explaining Impeachment, and more. Especially our celebration of GRETA THUNBERG.)

Our previous EVENTS EDITION received bunches of added features for dates that have gone by. Good informative stuff you may have missed, so go back 'n check it out when you have time.

THAT BRINGS US TO HERE 'N NOW. Going forward, previous events editions are obsolete, and THIS one is the only place we'll add more events (until the time comes to replace this one,  of course).

Now, after all that effort to find all these wonderful things you can go do... Things that prevent you from descending into boredom... AND save you from being harangued by Burt the Turtle McConnell... AND save you from the excruciating sameness of soundalike sh-thump-thud pop... you really have no excuse not to go out and avail yourself of good tunage!

So... Merry Chrismakwanzikah!

DAY-BY-DAY,

STUFF TO HEAR -
SEE - DO -
PARTAKE OF -
PARTICIPATE IN -

& more!

Here's what's happening,
chronologically,
by date and start time.
_____________________________________________

We often include a lil' piece on "this day in history" for whatever date it is. You've probably discovered some of those. Sometimes we feature a quote from a person born on that date.

Often, that stuff gets added the morning of that day.

Humor us and read it, okay? As Elvis said, "Thankyu vury much, mom'a baby."

Friday
________________________

TODAY is Friday the 13th. It acquired its wicked, ominous reputation from actual history.

On this date in 1307, the king of France ordered the sudden and brutal imprisonment of every member of the Knights Templar. Though the Knights had enjoyed Papal sanction to operate as the world's first international bank, the Pope was taken virtual prisoner by the French king to neutralize Rome's authority.

That happened because the king was a reckless spender enamored with shiny objects. He was also a tantrum-prone emotional adolescent, drunk on his own power (before there was impeachment) and he owed everybody money.

By abusing his power as head-of-state to pursue his personal interests -- taking prisoner, holding hostage in dungeons, and torturing the Templars, he was sure his extortion scheme would force them to produce all the money in their banks.

They didn't, and he exterminated them. Except, that is, for the ones who escaped -- purportedly with the Templar riches that remain lost to this day.
___

Today in 2019 -- this specific Friday the 13th -- goes into the history books for two things:

1)  in the US: The Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives voted along partisan lines to adopt two Articles of Impeachment against the President of the United States.
The full House will vote on them in the coming week.
The Articles are certain to be adopted there, which will produce an Impeachment Trial in the US Senate.
But in the Senate, Trump is certain to get off because the Senate Majority Leader has announced he will violate his Constitutionally-required oath of impartiality and collude with the defendant to get him off.

2)  In the UK: The results of yesterday's national election in the UK have produced a political earthquake.
The Conservative Party has won their largest majority since Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. Britain's Brexit from the European Union, by January 31, is now a certainty.
The Labour Party lost big, even in its traditional strongholds. Further privatization of national assets will continue.
But that's not the entire story, because the UK has a multi-party system.
Liberal Democratic Party leader Jo Swinson lost her seat to a member of the "SNP" -- the Scottish National Party. Moreover, Scotland wanted to remain in the EU, and it will mount a reinvigorated effort to secede from the UK and become independent.
Likewise for Northern Ireland, where newly-elected Irish Nationalists outnumber Unionists for the first time ever. With most of the Emerald Isle comprising the independent Republic of Ireland -- an EU member -- nobody wants a hard border to return and risk renewal of "The Troubles" there.
So, Boris Johnson and his Conservatives may soon find themselves governing a much smaller nation. Sorta like the US without California, Oregon, Washington, and Massachusetts.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, by one born on this date...

(Sure to register with everyone who shakes their head at the contradictory assortment of obstructionist stupidities, emotionally-driven reactive fear of "foreigners," and the headlong rush to over-reliance on technology to save us from ourselves)

"The walls of books around me, dense with the past, formed a kind of insulation against the present world and its disasters."

-- Ross Macdonald, novelist (born Dec 13, 1915, died in 1983)

*  Carole King has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She wrote several Top Ten hits for various groups with her partner and husband Gerry Goffin during the '60s, and in 1971, her "Tapestry" album became the top-selling pop solo album ever and held that position until Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in 1982. Over the course of her long career, she has penned over 400 songs that have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists.
*  James Taylor rose to fame in the '70s when he became known for writing and performing sensitive, affecting songs. Over the course of a long-running career, Taylor has won five Grammy Awards and seen many of his albums go platinum. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received a National Medal of the Arts in 2011. Taylor continues to be esteemed as a songwriter and performer whose work speaks to people's inner emotional lives.
*  But, thing of it is, you're gonna pay a lot of money and get nosebleed seats to go see either one of 'em. Now, we aren't big on "tribute acts," but... we like this concept, of a single, re-created night when the two artists shared a stage.

*  They perform authentic American roots music -- folk, country, blues and bluegrass that will uplift your spirit, and stir your soul.
*  This is history coming full-circle. The group takes inspiration from the many historic roots musicians that passed through the doors of the famed and long-lost Ash Grove Music Club on Melrose Avenue in 1950s and '60s Los Angeles. Today, the Coffee Gallery Backstage is the L.A. area's premiere acoustic music performance venue, so of course they must play here.
*  These six talented and seasoned singers and musicians play a variety of instruments, taking great traditional songs and giving them new life.
*  Featured are Claudia Lennear (vocals and background vocals), SS Jones (vocals, banjo and guitar), Steve Moos (vocals, mandolin and guitar), Eric Ahlberg (vocals and bass), David Fertig (harmonica), and Jeff Landau (guitar). The band started as a project of the Ash Grove Music Foundation.
*  During the seventies, Claudia Lennear was a musical pioneer who sang background vocals across the genres on stage, and recorded with Ike and Tina Turner, Allen Toussaint, the Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, George Harrison, Elton John, Steven Stills, Taj Mahal, and many others.
*  Claudia worked professionally with many of the producers and sidemen musicians who developed the fundamental character of the late '60s and '70s pop music scene, both in the United States and England.
*  Journalists have documented that Lennear was the muse for songs written by Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Leon Russell. Lennear affirms “Brown Sugar,” “Lady Grinning Soul,” “A Song for You,” “Masquerade,” and “She Smiles Like a River” as being inspired by her presence.
*  The Ash Grove Players performed to rave reviews at the Pete Seeger Memorial Concert produced by the Ash Grove Music Foundation in 2014. They performed their Lead Belly tribute show featuring SS Jones at the opening event of the Lead Belly Exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Last year they performed at the Levitt Pavillion Concert in Pasadena, and this year at the Levitt Pavillion, McArthur Park, sharing the bill with the Chambers Brothers Band. Recently they did a sold-out show at McCabe's.

*  They are one group, five master singer-songwriters, with ten great new songs covering a range of styles, all coming together in one very satisfying record.
*  Tall Men Group don't just have a new record. They deliver the goods again with “5”, their fifth album in eight years. What’s most remarkable about this band is that it consists of five singer-songwriters who combine to write fifty (count 'em) new songs a year.
*  The ten very best of those songs, deemed most worthy of recording, are featured on this, their latest CD, entitled “5.” Each song features the unique timbre of its writer’s vocal performance and lyrics that tell a compelling story, supported by full-band arrangements and exceptional harmony vocals.
*  Styles range from stone country (“Mending Scars”) to neo-soul (“Soul Quake”) to power pop (“Weak Days”) to folk-rock (“Stranger Stranded”) to r&b ballad (“Better Not Call”).
*  That variety is part of what keeps TMG’s devoted fans coming back for more, and the quality of the songwriting keeps the music high on everyone’s playlist. Think of the Traveling Wilburys to get an idea of a band with this many widely-recorded singer-songwriters. The Tall Men might just be at the peak of their game with this new collection.

Mon, Dec 16, Back East:
Annual reenactment of the BOSTON TEA PARTY at the harbor in Boston, MA
*  No, not the goofball modern privately-owned (for the profit of the few owners) "Tea Party" that isn't a real political party and should have stuck with the name they originally called themselves: "The Teabaggers."
*  THIS, in Boston, is a raucous historical reenactment that pitches fake bundles of tea from square-rigged sailing ships into the harbor, just like the 1775 rebellion. Except then it was real tea, when everybody drank tea like they drink coffee now. So they were putting their mouths where they money would have gone, to rebel against Britain's taxation without representation.

The editor had two needed surgeries today. Things went well. Thanks to those of you who knew to ask, and did. Quick story? On the way to being taken into the operating room on the gurney, he told the surgical team, "I've read too many mystery novels to be okay with being wheeled feet-first." One of many laughs shared with a personable and professional crew who belong in the jobs they do for the rest of us.

ADDITIONAL rallies in Southern California and throughout America can be found at this link.
*  These rallies on Tuesday night --  the evening before the House of Representatives is scheduled to take their critical vote on impeachment -- are among more than FIVE HUNDRED "NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW" events across the country.
*  People of all ages and backgrounds are coming together in these events to demand that our elected members of Congress -- in both the House and the Senate -- uphold their oath of office and the Constitution.
*  The evidence of Donald Trump's crimes is clear. He attempted to bribe a foreign government to produce interfere in the upcoming election. Then he colluded to obstruct justice to cover it up, and to obstruct Congress in their lawful investigation of what he did. There are clear indications -- through his own spoken remarks and tweets -- that he hasn't stopped breaking the law.
*  Congress -- across partisan divides -- must hold him accountable by impeaching him in the House, and then, in the Senate, removing him from office.
*  This is an opportunity to deliver that message to our elected representatives in DC, and to those who advocate turning a blind eye to the US Constitution because they like somebody who is violating it.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY from one born on this date...

"The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed."

-- Steve Biko, anti-apartheid activist (born Dec 18, 1946, died 1977)

(That isn't likely to open the closed minds of any Republicans in Congress, but does go a more toward explaining them.)
___

It is all but assured that today will bring the vote by the US House of Representatives to impeach President Donald J. Trump. Televised and live web steamed coverage begins at 6 am Pacific time.

It comes one day short of the twenty-year anniversary of the impeachment of President Willliam Jefferson Clinton on December 19, 1999.

It also comes one day after Trump's, rambling, conspiracy theory touting, generally bonkers 6-page letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Stephen Colbert took on select bits of that letter last night, on Impeachment Eve. It's in just one short video segment on openly accessible Twitter, at:

https://mobile.twitter.com/colbertlateshow/status/1207113248719306753

+
Here's something more if you want to see ALL the letter's crazy-ass stuff brought forth for deserved ridicule.

Comedian Anthony Atamanuik turns Trump’s crazy letter to Pelosi into an audio book — with commentary. Atamanuik added asides, speaking as "Trump" along with Trump’s staff-written uh, prose, sounds exactly like the stupid asides Trump throws-in every time he does speak. This mixture of reading and satire is also on openly accessible Twitter -- in 14 consecutive audio segments. Catch the heart of it in segments 6, 7, & 8. If you have the time, Atamanuik has the Orange Ogre's timing and schtick nailed, making the entire letter chillingly funny:

https://mobile.twitter.com/shinnygummy/status/1207111499551952896

To see Trump's genuine 6-page letter with no embellishment, go to:

Happy New Year
__________________________________

2020 will be a crossroads for human societies, planetary ecosystems, and whether science and intellect -- or superstitution, innuendo and fear -- will prevail. We can all be sure that the coming year's realities will be enough to make all the breathless headlines seem second-tier, at best. An impeachment trial. Rancorous primary elections. The certainty of shenanigans -- including in caucuses that determine party nominees -- by desperate partisan establishment types and their corporatist funders.

We will see shockingly unprecedented amounts poured into manufacturing public opinion, in the still-new, already big-bucks, no-fact-checks marketplace of spyware-laden social media; and of course in all the old places where persuasive lies profitably prevail to buy election outcomes. And that stuff will continue all year, through the general election in November.

There are things awaiting us that are as necessary as a root canal, things we must get past to reach what really matters. Things like overcoming all money cleverly spent on Climate Change denial by oligarchs employing psychological warfare masters, as the world burns.

Planetary desertification is expanding. Ocean fisheries are shrinking. Wildly destructive weather events are becoming more normal. Waves of climate refugee migrants will continue overwhelming national borders and global relief agencies. Racism, misogyny, sexism, age discrimination, health care access, prescription drug costs, gasoline prices, new car costs, jobs that offer benefits, and voter obstruction, are all trending in alarming directions.

Social media will keep "trending" us beneath avalanches of anesthetizing bs, and purport to rescue us with distraction mechanisms of lie-driven outrage. Skyrocketing housing costs will keep increasing homelessness among us as the number of landlords gets smaller and grows richer. More college grads who can't use their education to benefit society will be disillusioned because crushing student debt means, instead, they must do what compensates well enough to pay-off those debts by the time they're 40.

And sadly, all these things are guaranteed to happen whether or not the Wall Street bankster/ manipulators -- together with exploitive rulers of desperate nations -- keep finding ways to increase their bloated fortunes. All, while Rome, and everyplace else, burns.

"Happy New Year"-? Only if we roll up our sleeves and fight to make it one.

*  It was a time of flappers, speak-easies, popular songs with "naughty" lyrics, rejection of imposed moral standards that had prevented personal choices, and, in general, so much social upheaval that those taking part were deemed "The Lost Generation." (Yes, it sorta was the protype for '60s counter-culture.) Those elements, celebrated for a new time, are the inspiration for this event to upend the apple cart once again, in this event produced by the Outreach Center of Antelope Valley.

Sun, Jan 19; FESTIVAL:
2 pm - 13th annual "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SLACK KEY FESTIVAL" celebrates bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to the mainland, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, 1935 Manhattan Beach Bl (at Aviation Bl), Redondo Beach CA  90278
*  SLACK KEY -- Hawaiian "ki ho'alu" is one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world. Played from the heart and soul through the fingers and flowing with vivid tropical images, the festival lets you listen and learn the fascinating history of ki ho’alu guitar and the musical pioneers who helped shape its sound and legacy.
*  Produced by Kala Koa Entertainment, the festival includes an "Island Marketplace."
*  Showcasing GRAMMY-winning slack key guitarists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers, and the free-to-the-public Island Marketplace, this is one of the most acclaimed concerts to leave the islands.
*  The first of its kind anywhere outside of Hawaii, the Southern California Slack Key Festival continues to set milestones for Hawaiian music on the mainland. Since its debut in 2008, it has garnered a huge loyal following, creating, cultivating, and renewing interest in Hawaii and its music.
* This year’s line-up includes JOHN KEAWE, JERRY SANTOS, KAMUELA KIMOKEO, THE LIM FAMILY, IKAIKA MARZO, BOBBY MODEROW, JEFF PETERSON, ANTHONY PFLUKE, and BOBBY INGANO.
*  Ki ho'alu literally means "loosen the key." It is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
*  How does the distinctive sound of slack key music fit into the fabric of Hawaiian music and culture? Watch this video and learn more about this beautiful generations-old art form – https://vimeo.com/155399448.
*  In addition to the concert, an Island Marketplace – free to the public – takes place from 11 am-5 pm. You can browse a variety of island-themed gifts, home décor, accessories, apparel, and more. Plus, there's Hawaiian food, authentic island-style shave ice, and outdoor entertainment.
