√ ARLO GUTHRIE TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF "ALICE'S RESTAURANT MASSACREE" WITH NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN 2015
Perhaps it’s generational. But we think it’s transcendent. Hundreds of radio stations get anticipatory phone calls from listeners every Thanksgiving to be sure they’ll spin it. And when Arlo talked about “Alice’s Restaurant” on the editor’s L.A. radio show, the phones went crazy.
When you can conquer mainstream media with a counter-culture song, that’s a landmark:
"A great reminder of just how effective a bit of absurdity can be when it comes to combating serious issues."
- Rolling Stone
"A quintessential Guthrie composition in the way it turns a true story into an amusing folk tale."
- New York Times
"The strength of 'Alice's Restaurant' is its feel of truth -- and how it speaks that truth to power."
- Washington Post
"If there's one Turkey Day custom in our city that people actually enjoy, it's the airing of the classic 1967 Arlo Guthrie yarn 'Alice's Restaurant Massacree'."
- Philadelphia Weekly
Legendary folk music icon Arlo Guthrie will hit the road this coming January, 2015, to embark on an 18-month North American tour celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the event that inspired the seminal song, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree,"
It’s somewhat of a surprise, since Arlo essentially stopped performing the piece after his 40th anniversary tour, which ended more than eight years ago. The Guide quoted him as saying, “How would you like it if your whole life was a Groundhog Day of the same twenty-minute song, everywhere you went?”
But people everywhere still want to hear it. His signature musical monologue that runs more than 18 minutes, "Alice's Restaurant" is both an anti-war piece and a Thanksgiving holiday anthem to families across the globe. Indeed, it all originates from Guthrie's experience on Thanksgiving in 1965.
Each night on the forthcoming tour, Guthrie will perform his most prominent work in its entirety, as well as selections from every full-length studio album he's released since his debut, “Alice's Restaurant,” in 1967. In addition to the announced tour dates listed below, additional shows will be added in the coming months.
So, far, the Southern California gets four shows:
April 6 - Los Angeles, in Disney Hall
April 10 & 11 - Irvine, at the Irvine Barclay Theater
April 12 - Santa Clarita, in the very nice Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center
(all other dates, nationwide, are below)
Folk songs enduring many decades of change only become classics when storylines remain just as relevant today as they were when originally composed. "Alice's Restaurant" is of this ilk; it's now weaved into the fabric of American society. However listeners interpret the quintessential tune, we can rest assured that people of all different walks of life come together singing that famous chorus, "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant..."
"The Alice's Restaurant 50th Anniversary Tour" will bring together an ensemble of fine musicians that may never have graced the stage together at one time. Arlo's deft band includes TERRY HALL on drums, BOBBY SWEET on guitar and vocals, DARREN TODD on guitar, and Arlo’s son ABE GUTHRIE on keyboards.
Each show will also be “curated” with a special multi-media presentation, featuring previously unseen images from the Guthrie archives. More than 75,000 photos have recently been digitized, and selections will be projected along with PETER STAR's claymation film depicting Arlo's "Motorcycle Song".

“Wynonna and Friends: Stories & Song” will hit Indiana, Idaho, California, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, before wrapping Sunday, March 8 in Boston, MA.
You can purchase tickets now and stay informed on new confirmed shows at:
www.wynonna.com
“The concept for the ‘Stories & Song’ tour has been a dream of mine for many years and will be unlike any tour I’ve ever done before,” explains WYNONNA about the inspiration for this special tour. “My husband and professional partner, Cactus Moser, and I have put this show together and, along with the band [THE BIG NOISE], we all feel a renewed passion and we believe that this music is being celebrated in a whole new way. That gives me a great deal of hope and it is my prayer that others who come to our shows will experience that hope as well.”
When asked why she feels now is the time for a tour like this, WYNONNA says, “I have shared the stage with some of the greatest singers and musicians in the world and I have recorded with artists from all genres of music. It has been an amazing journey for me. I'm an ordinary woman that extraordinary things have happened to because I choose to continue to suit up and show up where I am called. I am more passionate now than I have ever been about my life, my gift, my faith, hopes and dreams, and I want so much to share my story and my songs with my fans. I have experienced so many personal and professional highs and lows on this journey, and having been on the road for 34 years now, I am so grateful for the wisdom and experience I have gained throughout all that has happened on and off stage. I'm looking forward to sharing my message with others, to celebrate this time in my life with the fans that have supported me all these years, as well as connect with new fans.”
As a five-time Grammy winner and New York Times bestselling author, WYNONNA’s career has always revolved around telling stories. Whether she’s using her rich, commanding voice to sing one of her countless hits or sitting down for one of her many bold, honest television appearances, WYNONNA always gets her point across with unflinching honesty and wisdom gained over the course of her very public life.
WYNONNA has been working with husband / producer / drummer Cactus Moser on solo material for her 8th studio album due out in 2015 on Curb Records. She recently opened up to “Rolling Stone Country” about the direction the new music is taking, describing it as “vintage yet modern” in the July 9, 2014 edition. The full interview can be read at:

The couple also recently released “Follow Me,” an original song exclusively for the film “The Hornet’s Nest” which features unprecedented real footage to tell the story of an elite group of U.S. troops sent on a dangerous mission deep inside one of Afghanistan’s most hostile valleys.
They performed the powerful track on “Good Morning America” back on May 22; you can watch it at:

√ NEW ORLEANS’ ICON, PROFESSOR LONGHAIR: KEY RE-RELEASE FROM RHINO
The beginning of each week, the folks at Rhino Records dig into the vaults, find something old, and make it new again as a “Mono Monday” release. This week is a compilation rather than a studio album, but it’s an especially important compilation, one which provides a glimpse into the New Orleans sound circa the late 1940s and early 1950s via the early recordings of a gentlemen named HENRY ROELAND BYRD, known to his friends as “Roy,” and to fans of his music as the one and only PROFESSOR LONGHAIR.
Originally released in 1972, “New Orleans Piano” is a compilation of material recorded by the good Professor between 1949 and 1952, including his take on “Tipitina,” which joined the US National Recording Registry in 2011. And there’s much more in the mix to enjoy, including “Mardi Gras in New Orleans,” “She Walks Right In,” “Walk Your Blues Away,” and a dozen others. In fact, when Rolling Stone compiled its 2003 list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” “New Orleans Piano” was there in the #220 spot, which is a remarkably strong showing for an album which was far more influential than it ever was commercially successful.
Professor Longhair continued his career as a performing and recording artist all the way up until his death in 1980 at the age of 61, releasing some highly entertaining work into his later years, including the trifecta of “Rock ‘n Roll Gumbo” (1977), “Live on the Queen Mary” (1980), and “Crawfish Fiesta” (1980). But if you’re in search of a single-disc look into his early career, “New Orleans Piano” is absolutely indispensable.

Though sometimes, you find yourself shaking your head when the situation warrants Roman Heralds with four-foot trumpets and a regiment spreading flower petals. Christiane Cargill Kinney wrote, “Really cool news to share. (I won two Global Music Awards, one for songwriting and one for best instrumental performance by a musical group with my Celtic bandmates).”

Speaking of her husband, Christiane’s pair of awards aren’t the only trophy wall additions at their house. She hastened to share, “Just wanted to take a moment this morning to brag on my hubby Seán - our shelves must now also find space for a shiny new 2014 Telly Award that he just won for an online promotional segment he directed, shot, edited, storyboarded, animated, etc. about our very favorite kilt store, Sport Kilt, who also carries his Tartan design! √ NATHAN STANLEY WINS "BLUEGRASS ALBUM OF THE YEAR" AT DOVE AWARDS
Nathan Stanley, grandson of bluegrass icon Dr. Ralph Stanley, won for his album, “Every Mile.” The honor came during the gala at the annual Dove Awards, in Nashville, Tennessee, the evening of October 7, 2014. The prestigious event is presented by the Gospel Music Association.
The young Stanley’s "winning album was produced by Terry Thompson and features notable collaborations, including one with Vince Gill on "Hand in Hand with Jesus," a duet with his legendary grandfather Dr. Ralph Stanley, and tracks with Sonya Isaacs Yeary & Becky Isaacs Bowman, Jeff & Sheri Easter, T. Graham Brown & Judy Marshall, Jeff Bates, Wes Hampton, and Adam Crabb.
"I am truly honored!" proclaimed Nathan Stanley, who continued, "This was my first Dove nomination. I cannot express how thrilled I am to have won this award, not just for me, but for my papaw. He has paved the way for so many, including me. Having him on this album was special enough, but to now share a Dove award with him takes it to another place.”
Remembering where he was, and who was making the award, Nathan added, “I want to thank everyone who played a part in making this happen. Most of all, I give all of the praise and glory to my lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Without him, this would not have been possible."
The Guide has always had a soft spot for Nathan Stanley, going back eight years, when he was much younger. After the Guide’s editor featured Nathan’s first album on his L.A. broadcast and web simulcast radio show, Nathan, then a junior high student, sent a handwritten letter of thanks – on lined notebook paper. We’ve never known how much came from his grandfather’s influence and how much was his own inclination. It made an enduring impression, either way.

√ AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS & SCIENCES TO HONOR DR. RALPH STANLEY, ROBERT REICH, ROBERT BALLARD, AL PACINO, JOHN IRVING, ANNIE PROULX, & JULES FEIFFER, ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11th
Trailblazing musician Dr. Ralph Stanley has been elected a Fellow in the Humanities and Arts category of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins a prestigious Class of 2014, a group that also includes actor and director Al Pacino, novelists John Irving and Annie Proulx, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, and oceanographer and discoverer of the Titanic, Robert Ballard, among others.
In May, Stanley was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University. It was his second such distinction, the first having been conferred in 1976 by Lincoln Memorial University, and the reason he includes the title of “Dr.” with his name.
On Saturday, the elder Stanley will be inducted formally into the Academy at its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Academy was founded in 1780 to recognize America's foremost "thinkers and doers." Among its past members are George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Martin Luther King Jr.
Current members include more than 250 Nobel laureates and 60 Pulitzer Prize-winners.
Recognized as the leading exponent of traditional Appalachian music and a founding father of bluegrass, Stanley has spread his sound around the world during his 68 years of touring and recording. He began his career in 1946 as the younger half of the Stanley Brothers, a group then headed by singer-songwriter Carter Stanley. The Stanley Brothers performed, recorded and appeared on television together until Carter's death in 1966.
In the years following, Stanley built and led a band that at various times featured such rising talents as Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Larry Sparks, and Charlie Sizemore. So significant was the Stanley sound in the 2000 movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" that it rocketed Ralph from icon of the bluegrass genre to superstar of music. He was profiled by novelist David Gates in “The New Yorker” magazine and went on to earn a Grammy as “Top Male Country Vocalist,” edging-out that year’s other nominees, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, and Lyle Lovett. To date, Dr. Ralph Stanley has won three Grammy awards.
Stanley's high, forlorn vocals are featured in the seven-million-selling "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. In addition, he was the first performer to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in the 21st Century. He is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.

√ PLAY DETECTIVE AT THE SYMPHONY, SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 25th
With the help of everyone’s favorite detective, none other than Sherlock Holmes himself, Pacific Symphony invites children and families to help solve the mystery of a haunted violin during a morning of music, laughter and clue-finding fun.
It's “A Sherlock Holmes Halloween,” the first concert of the 2014-15 "Family Musical Mornings" series. It's billed as "a campy, comedic turn from the traditional Halloween fare." The ever-innovative Pacific Symphony continues to find ways to make classical music attractive and accessible, and the Guide congratulates them once again for their ongoing commitment.
The premise this time around is all-ages-friendly fun. While leading the orchestra in Saint-Saëns’ spooky “Danse Macabre,” Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez hears a mysterious violin haunting the concert hall. To find out who is behind this shadow sound, played by young artist Francisco Fullana, who recently won the Johannes Brahms International Violin Competition. The maestro asks for assistance from his “good friends,” Sherlock Holmes (played by Rich Wordes) and Watson (played by Stephanie Draude), to get to the bottom of the case.
Two concerts take place, both on Saturday, Oct 25. One is at 10 am, the other at 11:30 am, both in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa. Full info and advance tix are available at www.PacificSymphony.org

√ GREEK THEATRE OPERATION: CITY DELAYS DECISION ON OCTOBER 9
The Guide brought our readers a late-breaking news story in a special edition this past Tuesday. We detailed, to a much greater extent than most other journalistic sources, the controversy surrounding the impending decision by the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission to end the longtime arrangement with Nederlander and award operation of the Greek Theater to the recently merged mega-corporation, Live Nation-Ticketmaster.
The Guide’s story was picked-up by the L.A. Progressive, which greatly expanded its readership.
Thanks to public response at the Thursday morning meeting, the City’s decision about the iconic venue in Griffith Park has been postponed. You can still read our story – look in the sidebar at left in the full site, or on your mobile device, hit your “back” key and scroll to select it.

Her newly released CD, “Laurie & Kathy Sing The Songs of Vern & Ray,” joins her with former GOOD OLD PERSONS bandmate Kathy Kallick, and as our Pasadena Folk Music Society friends assert, “it is destined to be a classic.” Laurie’s musical partnership with Tom Rozum has spanned some 28 years, and they sing and perform so well together. The special is entitled “Brooklyn” in part because it was recorded in Brooklyn at Union Hall, a mainstay of the New York comedy scene for the last decade, but also largely due to the fact that Wyatt doesn’t enjoy thinking up titles for things. In it, Wyatt spends his time sharing his observations ranging from the weirdness of adults giving each other hickeys, to watching the neighborhood where his grandmother lived for decades become the backdrop for at least three network sitcoms, a cop drama and probably a reality show about cheesemongers. Author Dennis McNally received his PhD in American history from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1977 for a biography of Jack Kerouac, published under the title Desolate Angel: Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation, and America. He became the Grateful Dead's authorized biographer in 1980 and the band's publicist in 1984. In 2002, he published the New York Times bestseller A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead.
+
In his new book, “On Highway 61: Music, Race, and the Evolution of Cultural Freedom,” McNally explores the significance of African-American music in the evolution of cultural freedom by examining the historical context and the deeper roots of mainstream America's cultural and musical progression. This engaging history begins by reviewing the social legacies of Henry David Thoreau and Mark Twain and their work as centered on the American ideal and the concept of freedom. As the first post-Civil War generation of black Americans came of age, they introduced into the national culture a trio of musical forms-ragtime, blues, and jazz-that would, with their derivations, dominate popular music to this day. Maturing at the hands of Louis Armstrong, it would soon attract a cluster of young white musicians such as the Austin High Gang, who fell in love with black music and were inspired to play it themselves. The next generation of African-Americans introduced bop, rhythm, and blues, and each would develop white followers like the Beat writers and the first young rock 'n' rollers. Because of the ongoing relationship between white, often young, Americans and African American culture, the theoretical separation in American music would begin to disappear. This biracial fusion would ultimately attain its highest achievement in the early work of Bob Dylan, born and raised at the northern end of the same Mississippi River and Highway 61 that had been the birthplace of much of the black music he would embrace. Please join us for a special discussion and Q & A panel about the book with McNally, moderated by journalist Steve Hochman.

The cover art to “Flesh And Machine,” the new album by gifted musician, renowned producer and ambient pioneer Daniel Lanois - contains a curious image: a baby with cybernetic antennae. The child represents Lanois himself. He explains: "The cover shows a boy who is looking for something that's never been heard before. He's my little seeker, he represents the bit of me that's always in the laboratory experimenting, looking for new sounds and sensations." But the image is apt in another way. Flesh And Machine, his third album for ANTI-, represents nothing short of a total artistic rebirth. Lanois has been involved in playing, recording and producing music for four decades now. In that time, he helped push the ambient genre forward into celestial new territory as Brian Eno's foremost protégé; he has recorded landmark albums for U2 and Peter Gabriel and has helped to revitalize the sonic dimensions of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. But this marks the first time he has truly deployed every sonic weapon in his arsenal and attempted to break virgin ground in support of his own music. The album bristles with new ideas. The softly spoken Canadian spent countless hours processing a very limited array of rock instruments - steel and electric guitars, piano, drums and human voice - to create a futuristic and near infinite sound palette. Please join us as we welcome Lanois to the Clive Davis Theater to discuss his impressive career, the making of the new album and how he continues to raise the spirit of his music and open up doors to the unknown. Moderated by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, Lanois will also take questions from the audience and will perform.

Rising star Sarah McQuaid’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine” (Minor 7th). A captivating performer, she seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument.

She recently returned from a 3 week Sierra Nevada backpack trip from Yosemite to Mount Whitney, so life is good and the music is great.
+
Last year's “One Evening in May,” a live album recorded in 2013, contains many new original songs, many composed on a retreat she took in Wyoming. She continues to be an amazing singer, fiddler, guitarist, songwriter, and interpreter of some of the classic music of bluegrass.
+
Her newly released CD, “Laurie & Kathy Sing The Songs of Vern & Ray,” joins her with former GOOD OLD PERSONS bandmate Kathy Kallick, and as our Pasadena Folk Music Society friends assert, “it is destined to be a classic.” Laurie’s musical partnership with Tom Rozum has spanned some 28 years, and they sing and perform so well together. Tom is wonderful mandolin and guitar player, an excellent lead and harmony singer, and his droll humor always adds to the show. Southern California's own Patrick Sauber is a permanent member of Laurie’s multiple-award-winning band, and he is well proven as a highly in-demand player worldwide. Patrick’s backing vocals, in addition to his renowned multi-instrumental prowess, add depth to the band’s sound.

Time tba WYATT CENAC from JON STEWART’S “DAILY SHOW,” is launching his tour in Los Angeles tonight at the Largo, corresponding with the date of his TV special, “Wyatt Cenac: Brooklyn,” premiering on Netflix (www. netflix.com); Largo, 432 N Fairfax Av, LA; 323-852-1073.

The same day, “Wyatt Cenac: Brooklyn” will be released as a 1,000 piece limited edition vinyl LP via Cenac’s production company, Amalgamated Bear, and distributed by Other Music.
+
The special is entitled “Brooklyn” in part because it was recorded in Brooklyn at Union Hall, a mainstay of the New York comedy scene for the last decade, but also largely due to the fact that Wyatt doesn’t enjoy thinking up titles for things. In it, Wyatt spends his time sharing his observations ranging from the weirdness of adults giving each other hickeys, to watching the neighborhood where his grandmother lived for decades become the backdrop for at least three network sitcoms, a cop drama and probably a reality show about cheesemongers. In keeping with the DIY spirit that has turned Brooklyn into an adjective, “Wyatt Cenac: Brooklyn” is directed by Cenac and features puppets as well as cameos from comedian Eugene Mirman (“Bob’s Burgers”) and Gbenga Akinnagbe from “The Wire.”

+
Born in Mainland China, BRENDA XU will be appearing with her 3-piece band consisting of two acoustic guitars and drums/percussion to promote her newest ambient-folk album "For The Winter." After releasing a debut EP and a full-length record in her hometown of San Diego to numerous accolades (including reviews in Performer Magazine and a nomination from the San Diego Music Awards), Brenda Xu (pronounced "shoo") re-located to Seattle where she just released her second album. Her ethereal voice has been compared to artists such as PJ Harvey, Daughter, and Aimee Mann.
+
Here’s something from her new album “For The Winter” Press Release: “The five years since Brenda Xu released her debut full-length album ‘A Little Illusion’ have been filled with considerable change, all of which is apparent in her new record ‘For The Winter.’ After receiving numerous accolades for the debut, including a nomination for ‘Best Acoustic Artist’ in the San Diego Music Awards, Brenda relocated to Seattle and took an indefinite hiatus from music, focusing on navigating her way through a new city and finding her place in the Seattle music scene. Slowly, the pieces fell into place: she became friends with Seattle-based producer Don Farwell and began forming a band to support her new songs. The years between Xu’s debut and her newest release, ‘For The Winter,’ are immediately apparent. Not only has her ability as a lyricist grown far beyond her years, but sonically, the album is a noted departure from her past singer-songwriter career, and instead treads the delicate line between washed-out ambient tones and carefully crafted acoustic arrangements. ‘For The Winter’ will transport any listener through a range of seasons and emotions, while reminding us that for every season’s waxings and wanings, they all share one commonality: that they will eventually come again. Summer will continue to be followed by autumn, and winter by spring. As for Brenda Xu, she’s leaving an unusually long winter behind and turning the leaf into her second spring. Press “…beautiful music that can calm the most savage beast.” - Thomas Lee, The Frontloader, Album Review of ‘For The Winter,’ at
www.thefrontloader.com/2014/09/12/brenda-xu-light-of-the-moon/
+
“Many fledgling artists are often forced to conceal an unrefined vision and lack of experience behind youthful exuberance…still, every once in a while someone emerges with an album that manages to tap into an unexpected groove and bring a surprising glimpse of fruition to the latent present. Witness Brenda Xu, who has managed to achieve this with ‘It’s True’…despite being sonically sparse, this less-is-more EP is ominously intense.” - Simeon Flick, San Diego Troubadour.
+
From a June 2011 article / interview in San Diego Acoustic March 2010 album review of “A Little Illusion” in San Diego Citybeat: “Xu’s rich songwriting skills are evident in every track on A Little Illusion. With a country lilt that sneaks in when you least expect it, Xu opens with a driving beat underneath a velvety-smooth, Suzanne Vega-esque voice and transitions into a captivating combination of acoustic guitar with an ethereal production that sounds almost as if it were being played in reverse. Leaving behind her delicate nature from previous songs, she tears a hole in the album with the standout track, “Count to Ten,” in which she growls under a slapping percussion with a voice seemingly influenced by PJ Harvey. Xu’s abilities as a vocalist on this album appear to be wide-ranging, if not boundless. And joined by the talented musicians with whom she’s surrounded herself, Xu has found a combination that will undoubtedly lead her to success…” -Justin Roberts.

Producer, engineer, mixer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (and the son of legendary producer/engineer Glyn Johns), Ethan's resume over the last 15 years is staggering, having produced breakout albums by Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Kings of Leon, Tift Merritt, and Laura Marling, to Hall of Fame luminaries like Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, and most recently Paul McCartney. He recently released The Reckoning, his second solo effort, and we are thrilled to present him here. Eleni Mandell, one of our city's great treasures who has headlined here in the past both as a solo performer and with The Living Sisters, completes the double bill.

Her musical output reflects her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holds dual US and Irish citizenship, and now lives in rural England. Refusing to be pigeonholed, she spans the genres with both her beautifully crafted originals and her interpretations of material from around the globe and down the centuries.

Sarah’s third solo album, “The Plum Tree and the Rose,” has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable,” wrote fRoots (UK), while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary” and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.”

Laurie's picture is on the cover of the August 2014 issue of the venerable, nationally-distributed, “Bluegrass Unlimited” magazine, and she has two outstanding new CDs out.
Some artists don’t send you way up on the sidewalk with wide-load flashers on their egos. It’s refreshing when you find that – to a point. Though sometimes, you find yourself shaking your head when the situation warrants Roman Heralds with four-foot trumpets and a regiment spreading flower petals. Get a load of how the winner of not one, but TWO awards, announced it.
Christiane Cargill Kinney wrote, “Really cool news to share. (I won two Global Music Awards, one for songwriting and one for best instrumental performance by a musical group with my Celtic bandmates).”

She is a formidable presence on the Irish music scene, and that’s reflected in the names of her children, Ireland, her daughter, and Zaiden, her son. Her husband, Seán Kinney, describes her as “My rock star wife.”
Speaking of her husband, Christiane’s pair of awards aren’t the only trophy wall additions at their house. She hastened to share, “Just wanted to take a moment this morning to brag on my hubby Seán - our shelves must now also find space for a shiny new 2014 Telly Award that he just won for an online promotional segment he directed, shot, edited, storyboarded, animated, etc. about our very favorite kilt store, Sport Kilt, who also carries his Tartan design! .
It made an enduring impression, either way.

It's “A Sherlock Holmes Halloween,” the first concert of the 2014-15 "Family Musical Mornings" series. It's billed as "a campy, comedic turn from the traditional Halloween fare." +

8 pm LAURIE LEWIS AND THE RIGHT HANDS, headed-up by Grammy winner LAURIE LEWIS, plays the Pasadena Folk Music Society series in Beckman Institure Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) on the Caltech Campus in Pasadena.
+
Laurie's picture is on the cover of the August 2014 issue of the venerable, nationally-distributed, “Bluegrass Unlimited” magazine, and she has two outstanding new CDs out.
+
Concert producers add, “We've just gotten word that John Mailander will play fiddle and Simon Chrisman will play bass for this show.”
+
Hear what Laurie does with Kate Long's song, “Who Will Watch the Home Place,” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDaEjoD0cqM
+
That gives you a good idea of how well Laurie and Tom's voices blend. There's some of Laurie’s mighty fine fiddling there, as well. You can hear Laurie and the Right Hands (with Nina Gerber sitting-in) play “The Crooked Miles,” one of Laurie's new songs on the live album, at www.youtube.com/watch? v=i6pLXnwhFgU
+
And to get a taste of the new recording with Kathy Kallick, try “Little Birdie,” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBdvJdRPCJo

On that track, note the fine banjo playing of Patrick Sauber.

It made an enduring impression, either way.

BIG CHANGE FOR THE GREEK THEATRE?
City's Decision to be made Thursday Morning
by Larry Wines
This Thursday, October 9, at 8:30 am, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will award a new contract for operation of the Greek Theatre, the iconic outdoor venue in Griffith Park. The new contract could stay in place as long as 20 years.
Nederlander Concerts, who characterizes itself as "a family-owned company," has been running the venue for the past 39 years, and has, through the new bid process, taken AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) as a partner.
Nederlander wants to continue running and booking the Greek, but it has encountered fierce competition.
Enter the recently-merged Live Nation / Ticketmaster, whose challenge to take over is, at the moment, winning. Nederlander characterizes its competitor as "a publicly traded Wall Street conglomerate."
Let's get to the substance of things.
Nederlander's statement reads, "At a time when the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks is trying to solve a funding crisis, our joint venture proposal with AEG Live guarantees at least $77,500,000 in rent to the City, which is $17,500,000 more than our opponent’s offer. Just think what over $17 million can do to support local community needs!"
The financial numbers are eye-popping. All the numbers at the venue are big.
The Greek Theatre just completed the last month with more than 20 shows. That was more than Staples Center, the Forum, Nokia Theatre, and the Palladium combined.
For its part, Live Nation / Ticketmaster is staying quiet -- after gaining the recommendation of General Manager Michael A. Shull to his L.A. Recreation and Parks Department Board.
On September 26th, Live Nation / Ticketmaster was revealed as the winning bidder through the Request For Proposals (RFP) process for the new contract. But that's not the end of the story. The full board still must act to award a contract.
"Related documents" from the RFP / Proposal bid and acceptance process were made available for public review on September 30 -- the day before the City's Recreation and Parks Board was to accept the recommendation to make the reward and begin negotiations on a new agreement, a Pollstar story revealed a week ago.
You can view all those documents at
http://www.laparks.org/greek/greekNotice.htm
Nederlander's attorney, Andrew Kugler, sent a six-page protest letter to board president Sylvia Patsouras. Kugler cited the release of documents was less than one full business day before the board’s meeting, which seems irregular and unfair.
Kugler's point was, this "effectively prevents" stakeholders, including Nederlander-AEG, "from having a meaningful opportunity to scrutinize the recommendation... until after the Board votes to approve the award."
Kugler's letter continues, “Put simply, there needs to be transparency in this process, particularly given the significant red flags raised by the Board Report."
One obvious red flag is that Live Nation's proposal includes a new "Greek Theatre Community Trust" -- a fund controlled by Live Nation -- "for the purpose of irrevocably receiving funds generated through a 'special ticket sales program.'" That program's fund would be "established using a guaranteed minimum of 50 premium seat tickets for each show to be held by Live Nation at the Greek Theatre."
That, from the Live Nation / Ticketmaster proposal.
For being a very big deal involving a whole lot of money and reaching five presidential terms into the future, there has been surprisingly little public dialog. Indeed, the RFP that began the process wasn't issued until June 4th.
Despite the Recreation and Parks Department General Manager's endorsement of Live Nation / Ticketmaster in this accelerated RFP / proposal acceptance process and the momentum it produces, Nederlander apparently believes it still can win.
Nederlander's latest statement, released this morning, asserts, "...our proposal takes great care of The Greek, including:
- A complete historic renovation revealing The Greek’s original 1930’s stage columns, while adding modern amenities
- A complete re-landscaping of the plaza and hillside
- A new restaurant and upgraded concession offerings
- A 365 day a year café to service people who enjoy Griffith Park
- A comprehensive environmental plan to minimize the Greek’s impact on the environment
- An increased and continued support of the local community and its arts programs
- And our continued commitment to be Los Angeles’ best music venue!"
Nederlander has established a website to support their bid, at
http://www.WeAreTheGreek.com
And they have a Change.org petition to send public signatures and sentiments to city officials, at
https://www.change.org/p/i-support-greektheatrela-wearethegreek
(Yes, it's ironic that Nederlander-AEG is using a "Change.org" petition when their goal is to avoid a change that would give them the boot.)
For their part, Live Nation / Ticketmaster did offer to make a larger capital investment over the maximum 20-year life of a new contract. But that's tied with those nebulous points about 50 uber-expensive tickets per show, set aside for rich 1%-ers, and a "community trust" that the for-profit entity would administer, and whatever all that would entail.
The final decision who will operate L.A.'s Greek Theatre, possibly for the next two decades, will be made at 8:30 am this Thursday morning at the City Recreation and Parks board meeting in Friendship Auditorium, 3201 Riverside Drive, L.A. 90027. The public can comment and attend, up to the capacity of the facility.

Where we are...
.
Everyone took most of the summer off. Including one who is still out riding the rails on a 30-states-in-30-days oddyssey around America by train.
That's stretched into autumn. Even if it still feels like late July in Southern California.
First time in the 12+ year history of the Guide that we've ever taken a hiatus of any duration, much less a lengthy one.
So, we'll be back. We'll even have news from that enormous trip on the railroads.
Stay tuned. Here and with your tuning pegs. And play nice with each other, y'hear?
