Born in Mainland China, BRENDA XU will be appearing with her 3-piece band consisting of two acoustic guitars and drums/percussion to promote her newest ambient-folk album "For The Winter." After releasing a debut EP and a full-length record in her hometown of San Diego to numerous accolades (including reviews in Performer Magazine and a nomination from the San Diego Music Awards), Brenda Xu (pronounced "shoo") re-located to Seattle where she just released her second album. Her ethereal voice has been compared to artists such as PJ Harvey, Daughter, and Aimee Mann.
+
Here’s something from her new album “For The Winter” Press Release: “The five years since Brenda Xu released her debut full-length album ‘A Little Illusion’ have been filled with considerable change, all of which is apparent in her new record ‘For The Winter.’ After receiving numerous accolades for the debut, including a nomination for ‘Best Acoustic Artist’ in the San Diego Music Awards, Brenda relocated to Seattle and took an indefinite hiatus from music, focusing on navigating her way through a new city and finding her place in the Seattle music scene. Slowly, the pieces fell into place: she became friends with Seattle-based producer Don Farwell and began forming a band to support her new songs. The years between Xu’s debut and her newest release, ‘For The Winter,’ are immediately apparent. Not only has her ability as a lyricist grown far beyond her years, but sonically, the album is a noted departure from her past singer-songwriter career, and instead treads the delicate line between washed-out ambient tones and carefully crafted acoustic arrangements. ‘For The Winter’ will transport any listener through a range of seasons and emotions, while reminding us that for every season’s waxings and wanings, they all share one commonality: that they will eventually come again. Summer will continue to be followed by autumn, and winter by spring. As for Brenda Xu, she’s leaving an unusually long winter behind and turning the leaf into her second spring. Press “…beautiful music that can calm the most savage beast.” - Thomas Lee, The Frontloader, Album Review of ‘For The Winter,’ at
www.thefrontloader.com/2014/09/12/brenda-xu-light-of-the-moon/
+
“Many fledgling artists are often forced to conceal an unrefined vision and lack of experience behind youthful exuberance…still, every once in a while someone emerges with an album that manages to tap into an unexpected groove and bring a surprising glimpse of fruition to the latent present. Witness Brenda Xu, who has managed to achieve this with ‘It’s True’…despite being sonically sparse, this less-is-more EP is ominously intense.” - Simeon Flick, San Diego Troubadour.
+
From a June 2011 article / interview in San Diego Acoustic March 2010 album review of “A Little Illusion” in San Diego Citybeat: “Xu’s rich songwriting skills are evident in every track on A Little Illusion. With a country lilt that sneaks in when you least expect it, Xu opens with a driving beat underneath a velvety-smooth, Suzanne Vega-esque voice and transitions into a captivating combination of acoustic guitar with an ethereal production that sounds almost as if it were being played in reverse. Leaving behind her delicate nature from previous songs, she tears a hole in the album with the standout track, “Count to Ten,” in which she growls under a slapping percussion with a voice seemingly influenced by PJ Harvey. Xu’s abilities as a vocalist on this album appear to be wide-ranging, if not boundless. And joined by the talented musicians with whom she’s surrounded herself, Xu has found a combination that will undoubtedly lead her to success…” -Justin Roberts.

Rising star Sarah McQuaid’s voice has been likened to malt whiskey, melted chocolate and “honey poured into wine” (Minor 7th). A captivating performer, she seduces her audience with cheeky banter and stories from the road, as well as with stunning musicianship; in her hands, the guitar becomes much more than merely an accompanying instrument.
+
Her musical output reflects her own eclectic background: Sarah was born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holds dual US and Irish citizenship, and now lives in rural England. Refusing to be pigeonholed, she spans the genres with both her beautifully crafted originals and her interpretations of material from around the globe and down the centuries.

Sarah’s third solo album, “The Plum Tree and the Rose,” has drawn critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic: “Impeccable,” wrote fRoots (UK), while Midwest Record (USA) called it “low key but glorious and incendiary” and Hot Press (Ireland) said it “should feature on many end-of-year best-ofs.”

Laurie's picture is on the cover of the August 2014 issue of the venerable, nationally-distributed, “Bluegrass Unlimited” magazine, and she has two outstanding new CDs out. She recently returned from a 3 week Sierra Nevada backpack trip from Yosemite to Mount Whitney, so life is good and the music is great.

Last year's “One Evening in May,” a live album recorded in 2013, contains many new original songs, many composed on a retreat she took in Wyoming. She continues to be an amazing singer, fiddler, guitarist, songwriter, and interpreter of some of the classic music of bluegrass.
+
Her newly released CD, “Laurie & Kathy Sing The Songs of Vern & Ray,” joins her with former GOOD OLD PERSONS bandmate Kathy Kallick, and as our Pasadena Folk Music Society friends assert, “it is destined to be a classic.” Laurie’s musical partnership with Tom Rozum has spanned some 28 years, and they sing and perform so well together. Tom is wonderful mandolin and guitar player, an excellent lead and harmony singer, and his droll humor always adds to the show. Southern California's own Patrick Sauber is a permanent member of Laurie’s multiple-award-winning band, and he is well proven as a highly in-demand player worldwide. Patrick’s backing vocals, in addition to his renowned multi-instrumental prowess, add depth to the band’s sound.

. √ NATHAN STANLEY WINS "BLUEGRASS ALBUM OF THE YEAR" AT DOVE AWARDS
Nathan Stanley, grandson of bluegrass icon Dr. Ralph Stanley, won for his album, “Every Mile.” The honor came during the gala at the annual Dove Awards, in Nashville, Tennessee, the evening of October 7, 2014. The prestigious event is presented by the Gospel Music Association.
The young Stanley’s "winning album was produced by Terry Thompson and features notable collaborations, including one with Vince Gill on "Hand in Hand with Jesus," a duet with his legendary grandfather Dr. Ralph Stanley, and tracks with Sonya Isaacs Yeary & Becky Isaacs Bowman, Jeff & Sheri Easter, T. Graham Brown & Judy Marshall, Jeff Bates, Wes Hampton, and Adam Crabb.
"I am truly honored!" proclaimed Nathan Stanley, who continued, "This was my first Dove nomination. I cannot express how thrilled I am to have won this award, not just for me, but for my papaw. He has paved the way for so many, including me. Having him on this album was special enough, but to now share a Dove award with him takes it to another place.”
Remembering where he was, and who was making the award, Nathan added, “I want to thank everyone who played a part in making this happen. Most of all, I give all of the praise and glory to my lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Without him, this would not have been possible."
The Guide has always had a soft spot for Nathan Stanley, going back eight years, when he was much younger. After the Guide’s editor featured Nathan’s first album on his L.A. broadcast and web simulcast radio show, Nathan, then a junior high student, sent a handwritten letter of thanks – on lined notebook paper. We’ve never known how much came from his grandfather’s influence and how much was his own inclination. It made an enduring impression, either way.

. √ AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS & SCIENCES TO HONOR DR. RALPH STANLEY, ROBERT REICH, ROBERT BALLARD, AL PACINO, JOHN IRVING, ANNIE PROULX, & JULES FEIFFER, ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11th
Trailblazing musician Dr. Ralph Stanley has been elected a Fellow in the Humanities and Arts category of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins a prestigious Class of 2014, a group that also includes actor and director Al Pacino, novelists John Irving and Annie Proulx, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, and oceanographer and discoverer of the Titanic, Robert Ballard, among others.
In May, Stanley was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University. It was his second such distinction, the first having been conferred in 1976 by Lincoln Memorial University, and the reason he includes the title of “Dr.” with his name.
On Saturday, the elder Stanley will be inducted formally into the Academy at its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Academy was founded in 1780 to recognize America's foremost "thinkers and doers." Among its past members are George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Martin Luther King Jr.
Current members include more than 250 Nobel laureates and 60 Pulitzer Prize-winners.
Recognized as the leading exponent of traditional Appalachian music and a founding father of bluegrass, Stanley has spread his sound around the world during his 68 years of touring and recording. He began his career in 1946 as the younger half of the Stanley Brothers, a group then headed by singer-songwriter Carter Stanley. The Stanley Brothers performed, recorded and appeared on television together until Carter's death in 1966.
In the years following, Stanley built and led a band that at various times featured such rising talents as Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Larry Sparks, and Charlie Sizemore. So significant was the Stanley sound in the 2000 movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" that it rocketed Ralph from icon of the bluegrass genre to superstar of music. He was profiled by novelist David Gates in “The New Yorker” magazine and went on to earn a Grammy as “Top Male Country Vocalist,” edging-out that year’s other nominees, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, and Lyle Lovett. To date, Dr. Ralph Stanley has won three Grammy awards.
Stanley's high, forlorn vocals are featured in the seven-million-selling "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. In addition, he was the first performer to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in the 21st Century. He is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.
