LATE ADDITION...

Thu, Oct 30, ON THE WEB:
5:30 pm (Pacific) JULIE CHRISTENSEN performs online.
+
Julie says, "Join us this evening LIVE ONLINE! Click the link and sign on for free... our concert is pay what you want, starting at only $1. There will be a live chatroom going, though we won't be taking requests. You will love my new band."
+
"On three tours, Julie Christensen helped share Leonard Cohen's music with the world. She's also sung with Steve Wynn, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Lou Reed, and Van Dyke Parks. With Chris D., she headed up post-punk rockers Divine Horsemen. Others utilizing Julie's talents have been as far-flung as Iggy Pop, PiL, Robben Ford, and k.d. lang. The newest album is 2007's folk-rock 'Where the Fireworks Are.' The other recent one is 'Something Familiar,' a collection of standards and blues. Stone Cupid's earlier two acclaimed independent albums are a soulful hybrid of roots and folk. Julie was a featured member of the Cohen song projects produced by Hal Willner. The 'Came So Far for Beauty' concerts (on which the documentary film 'I'm Your Man' was partly based) had four installments over 4 years. In Dublin, Julie performed a fiery Joan of Arc with Lou Reed." -- from the NASHVILLE SCENE, July 2014.
+
There are plenty of great singer-songwriters in East Nashville, but very few with a résumé that rivals Julie Christensen’s. Christensen, who moved to Music City from Los Angeles a year ago, was a member of renowned ’80s L.A. punk band The Divine Horsemen (with then-husband Chris Desjardins), followed by a lengthy stint in Leonard Cohen’s band. ...She’s worked with Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Todd Rundgren, k.d. lang and more.
+
Suffice to say, she’s got cred.
+
Her 2012 album, "Weeds Like Us" is an intoxicating blend of gritty roots rock and old-school soul. Highlights include the lead track “Restless,” a steamy dose of bubbling country funk; the moody ballad “Outside”; and the swampy, yearning “Call Me Up.”
+
"Christensen may be new to town, but she wasted no time finding a stellar backing band, including guitarists Sergio Webb and Chris Tench, bassist Bones Hillman and drummer Steve Latanation. Reckless Johnny Wales opens." -- JACK SILVERMAN, July 2014.

News Feature #1...

REVIEW: TAYLOR SWIFT's "1989" PERFORMANCE ON TV's GMA, Oct 30, 2014

So, TAYLOR SWIFT brought her legs that stretch into next week and did ABC's "Good Morning America" show this morning to promote her new album. She has gone pop – yes, even more pop than Nashville's supposed country.

That new album is "1989," and it's supposed to be a return to a time when pop was more musical, rather than droll and atonal or, most recently, with the characteristics of an amp short-circuiting and somebody being electrocuted.

Our only experience with Swift's new/retro album was this morning's live performance.

Retro? There are recessive genes of Devo and Blondie in the DNA, and her dancers have moves from another time. Even though Swift's own stage gestures emulate rap's gang-twit hand signs as much as anything.

So, what sound does it have?

Things were overwhelming percussive in that relentless, monotonously simplistic pop style, and every opportunity to borrow from rock's pantheon of great drum riffs was scrupulously ignored.

But mostly, what characterized her performance (along with her legs) was that her lyrics were unintelligibly inscrutable. Her opener, the album's first track, seemed to be semi-understandable, until you learn that it was her self-proclaimed anthem of her "new life," post-Nashville, titled "Welcome to New York." But it seemed to come-out as "Weh-come to the young-young-young-young." Go figure.

Was it the sound engineering on ABC's outdoor stage? Read on.

Along with misheard lyrics there, and lyrics that were entirely gibberish elsewhere, there was another dominance: the combination of keys and chords and octaves and what those did with/to her vocals? Well, the most descriptive word is, "annoying." Somebody is tone deaf, and it isn't me.

A bit of background. I must say that Taylor Swift's trademark country stage shtick, that thing of deer-in-the-headlights, "Home Alone" movie poster "surprise," is something she overplayed for so many years that it long ago transcended "Oh, please." Yet, from the time I learned she would be going pop in a retro style with "1989," I thought, "Pop music used to be better. A lot better. She's a big star with a big following. This could be a good thing. Maybe we'll get melodies back. Maybe harmonies, too. Maybe this ubiquitous godawful pulse-wave electronica crap will become passé. She could be the one to do it."

This morning, she did feature some nice, if brief, vocal harmonies of those inscrutable lyrics with her backup singer-dancers. And if that putzy pounding percussion hadn't been so over-the-top in the mix, there were some melody lines in there better than recent pop.

We're left with one impression, applicable on multiple points: this morning on GMA was squandered opportunity after two years of work to redefine herself. So, maybe we'll catch some tracks from the finished album. Maybe. But after hearing it live, we won't go out of the way to do it.

HALLOWEEN’s CELTIC ORIGINS

From “Zydecobrad’s S/C Cajun & Zydeco 823rd Newsletter,”
a great source for Cajun music and zydeco dance events

Halloween or Hallowe'en (/ˌhæləˈwiːn, -oʊˈiːn, ˌhɑːl-/; a contraction of "All Hallows' Evening"), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day.

It initiates the triduum of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. Within Allhallowtide, the traditional focus of All Hallows' Eve revolves around the theme of using "humor and ridicule to confront the power of death.”

According to many scholars, All Hallows' Eve is a Christianized feast initially influenced byCeltic harvest festivals, with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic Samhain. Other scholars maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots.

[The Guide’s past research found Samhain to be the root of Halloween, and centuries of obfuscation by the Catholic church, which famously co-opted dozens of pagan feast and celebration days, naming them after various saints or events in Christian folklore to create all-encompassing Christian dominion over cultures being Christianized.]

SUNDAY: “SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – MUSIC & TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL

The Guide looks forward to this one every year. And on Sunday, November 2nd, you’ll get two chances to enjoy it, at 3 & 7 pm, with both shows in the SFV (North Hollywood).

They’ve played a lot with the title this year, and no wonder, because this is a very full show of Irish music and dance, together with storytelling and performed scenes. Producer Aedan MacDonnell, who also performs, tells us, “The Dead Do Tell Tales, told through song, story, music and dance.” It’s produced through her company, Celtic Rhythms, at the Mayflower Club, 11110 Victory Bl, N Hollywood 91606.

Samhain: (pronounced sow-in, like the pig) is a Celtic Halloween extravaganza. You'll hear tales of the true origins of the Jack O' the Lantern, of ghostly encounters, and the origins of All Hallows' Eve, told with high energy Irish dances, traditional Celtic tunes that will bewitch your feet and keep your toes a-tappin', ghostly love songs that will rip your heart out, and exciting dances with real swords and axe handles with the dancers in very close proximity to one another. The promo asserts, “You won't want it to end!” That’s true. It’s that good.

Aedan says, “This year we have a new line-up in outstanding musicians, as well as those that have been with the show from year one. And we also have an official Samhain song, written by Padraic Conroy, one of our new additions. He wrote two songs for the show, one is previewed on our website.”

You can enjoy that one at http://celtic-rhythms.com/samhain

The Guide heartily endorses this show, which has become an annual tradition on the Southern Cal arts scene. We recommend you get tix right away, as it will likely sell-out. And we recommend you opt for the “Preferred” seats, because the venue has a flat floor.

Tickets for the 3 pm show are $15 general seating, $18 Preferred Seating

News Feature #4:
(updated from original that ran last week.)

SERVICES ARE SATURDAY FOR THE LATE BRUCE FRANZEN,
Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Board Member

By Michele Marotta, Guide correspondent

Bruce Franzen August 9, 1950 – October 15, 2014

I received a text message on Sunday, October 19, 2014 advising that Bruce Franzen had passed away. I first met Bruce in 1972. Over time, we lost contact, and then reconnected in 1991. We were friends ever since. Bruce was an "older brother" to me, helping me move once and he must have thought he was constantly rescuing me from bad relationships.

Bruce was past president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, and together with his wife Jackie, the two have been organizers and volunteers on the roots music scene for many years.

Bruce's eyes would light up when Jackie's name was mentioned, and he was the love of her life.

Bruce was especially active with an annual event where he played a key role, the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival. It’s a landmark event held every May at the old western-town movie set at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a site administered by the National Park Service. The couple’s other involvements include the acoustic music series held at the Airtel Hotel, along with a variety of folk, bluegrass and western music events.

The Topanga Banjo•Fiddle website still includes his autobiographical paragraph as a board member: "Hello, my name is Bruce Franzen and I'm a native Californian, born in the San Fernando Valley. I attended my first Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest in 1967 and after that I was hooked. Soon I began playing mandolin at the Blue Ridge Pickin' Parlor and then at Topanga itself in 1983. I am now serving on the Board of Directors of the contest. Currently I'm employed by the City of Los Angeles and since 1989 have volunteered for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. I am a past president of that organization. I look forward to helping to make this year's Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest the most enjoyable ever. See you there!"

Those who saw Bruce at Topanga over those many years will carry fond memories of interactions with him.

I spoke to Bruce’s wife, now widow, Jackie, just after his passing. Jackie told me that she and Bruce had been together over 26 years. They were married for more than fourteen of those years.

In addition, Jackie shared, "Bruce and I were co-Presidents of the Jaycees at the same time. Bruce was also very active in elections and worked our precinct for a number of years. We did everything together. I love him so much."

Bruce had a very diverse working career. Initially, he was a plumber by trade. Bruce also worked for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks Department for two years before he went to work for the LAPD Motor Transport Division.

About 18 months ago, Bruce told me his kidneys were failing. He came to my office and spoke to the attorney I where I worked at that time; the attorney had undergone a kidney transplant several years ago. The attorney, Mr. Gold, spoke to Bruce for almost two hours, explaining the pros and cons of dialysis, and suggested he look for a kidney donor.

Bruce was on dialysis several times a week, and last week, he succumbed to septicemia.

Bruce leaves behind his lovely wife, Jackie, their cat, and numerous relatives and friends, including his many music friends. All of whom will miss him.

If you have a story to share about Bruce, email Joy Felt (bgraskal1@earthlink.net) and she will incorporate it into Bruce’s special memory book for Jackie.

Services are Saturday, November 1, at 10 am in the chapel at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen St, Chatsworth, CA 91311; 818-341-0344.

Joy Felt will host a musical celebration for “A Life Well Lived” following the ceremony. Jackie has requested that you bring your instruments to celebrate Bruce’s love of music.
