★ A SHOW of WEEK Pick...
Thu, Jul 25, in Ventura:
7:30 pm MILKDRIVE brings “progressive bluegrass” from Austin to Zoeys Café, 185 E Santa Clara St, Ventura 93001; 805-652-1137. Venue has a limited but very tasty menu and full bar.
+
Jazz-grass band MilkDrive features award-winning instrumentalists Brian Beken on fiddle and lead vocals, Noah Jeffries on guitar and harmony vocals, Dennis Ludiker on mandolin and harmony vocals, and Matt Mefford on double bass. But awards reveal nothing about the Austin-based string band’s exhilarating sound. Fueled by equal parts tradition and innovation, MilkDrive delivers a distinctive acoustic experience that crosses genres, geographies, and generations.
+
The band’s much-anticipated sophomore studio album, “WAVES,” produced by Bil VornDick, was released in June 2012. It showcases the band’s sophisticated arrangements and fierce musicianship with a number of original compositions, and it notably features guests Noam Pikelny (of Punch Brothers) and Futureman (of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones).
+
Dennis Ludiker, Brian Beken and Noah Jeffries met as youngsters competing in the prestigious “National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest” in Weiser, Idaho. Eventually they migrated to Austin, where they toured with an eclectic mix of bands and honed their songwriting chops before joining up with bass player extraordinaire Matt Mefford and forming MilkDrive.
+
In June 2009, the band recorded and released a live album, “MilkDrive Live ’09,” which spotlights the band’s vigorous picking technique and charismatic writing style. Their debut studio album, “Road From Home,” released in April 2011, combines haunting ballads with their signature instrumentals – “achieving a rootsy feel with a sophisticated edge,” as reviewer Graham Robertson put it, adding that it’s “A fantastic canvas for solo work.”
+
Andrew Dansby of the Houston Chronicle calls the MilkDrive repertoire “a virtuosic blast of bluegrassy string-band music.” With labels that range from jamgrass and nu-folk to redneck gypsy jazz, the band has built a following that’s as funky and friendly as they are. The group plays festivals from coast to coast every year, with stops in between at Colorado’s beloved “RockyGrass Festival” and at home at the “Austin City Limits Music Festival.”
+
They play only three Southern Cal shows during their formidable national tour:
♪ Zoey’s tonight

TICKET ALERT / SPECIAL FEATURE STORY: RUN BOY RUN
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
.
They're a hot bluegrass / old-time band who've TWICE performed on radio's "A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION." They won the ultra-prestigious "Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest." And they are playing only ONE Southern California show -- in a small venue -- during their national tour. This'll sell-out QUICKLY, so jump on it.
.
★ RUN BOY RUN is an exciting young band from Tucson, Arizona. They have a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time / bluegrass styles, and feature a unique instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass, along with three female lead singers with beautiful harmonies.
.
Garrison Keillor, host of "A Prairie Home Companion," didn't just book them twice; he raves about them: "Hot instruments and beautiful, sweet harmony singing - that's all you need in the world today! When I hear Run Boy Run, it all comes back to me, why I started doing that show back then. I hope they go on forever."
.
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Existing in the tension between tradition and frontier, Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest winner and Two Time Prairie Home Companion guests RUN BOY RUN truly exceeds the sum of its parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of the band’s unique sound.". The band's members include two sets of siblings. Brother and sister Matt Rolland (fiddle & guitar) and Grace Rolland (cello & vocals), combine with sisters Bekah Sandoval (fiddle & vocals) and Jen Sandoval (mandolin & vocals). The band is completed by Jesse Allen (upright bass).
.
Called by Paste Magazine, "one of the top ten Arizona bands to hear now," Run Boy Run self-released their full-length album "So Sang the Whippoorwill" in March 2013 to critical regional and national acclaim.
.
From winning the band contest at "Pickin’ in the Pines" in the first weeks of forming in 2009, to playing the main stage at the "Telluride Bluegrass Festival" as band contest winners in 2012, to making a second appearance on "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2013, Run Boy Run is spreading their signature instrumentation and sweet three-part female harmony vocal music and youthful energy nationwide.
.
Brother and sister Matt and Grace Rolland have fiddle music running through their blood, raised with bow and rosin on every bedside table. The group's three female lead singers, sisters Bekah and Jen Sandoval, grew up deeply rooted in the bluegrass festivals of Arizona, so they too found a home in Run Boy Run. Bass player Jesse Allen was brought-up on opera and western swing, and grew to love the natural fusion inherent in American music. They're all solid, instrumentally, in a lavish string mix for the genre. The band's "whole" exceeds the sum of its formidable parts, incorporating touches of classical, jazz, and folk through the old-time core of Run Boy Run’s sound.
.
In addition to counting Garrison Keillor among their fans, it has been widely ibserved that Run Boy Run brings a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time/bluegrass style, featuring a solid instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass.
.
★ HOW TO GET TICKETS for their ONE local show:

It's on Tuesday, July 30, at 8 pm, at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, in Altadena.  Phone right away for reservations before all the seats are gone -- 626-798-6236 (phone 10 am-10 pm daily; no online reservations). Tickets are $18.

He has produced recordings with leading artists including Ari Hest (Downtown/Mercer Street), Elizabeth and the Catapult (Verve/Forecast), Melissa Ferrick (MPress Records), Vienna Teng (Rounder/Universal), Delta Rae (Sire/Warner Bros), and Grammy nominee Ximena Sariana (Warner Bros.) Alex has garnered critical acclaim for his artistic collaborations with recording artists Amber Rubarth ("The Paper Raincoat" -- and she has played this venue), Vienna Teng, and Paul Freeman. His songwriting / production has been heard in film and television projects such as "The Last Song” (Disney / Touchstone), “One Tree Hill,” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” (Lion’s Gate), and has won several "Independent Music Awards." Alex will be heading out on a tour of the U.S and Germany supporting Vienna Teng in the Fall. More at www.acityonalake.com

TICKET ALERT /
SPECIAL FEATURE STORY:
RUN BOY RUN
I hope they go on forever."
.
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Existing in the tension between tradition and frontier, Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest winner and Two Time Prairie Home Companion guests RUN BOY RUN truly exceeds the sum of its parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of the band’s unique sound."
.
The band's "whole" exceeds the sum of its formidable parts, incorporating touches of classical, jazz, and folk through the old-time core of Run Boy Run’s sound.
.
In addition to counting Garrison Keillor among their fans, it has been widely ibserved that Run Boy Run brings a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time/bluegrass style, featuring a solid instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass.
.
★ HOW TO GET TICKETS for their ONE local show:
. It's Tuesday, July 30, at 8 pm, at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, in Altadena.  Phone right away for reservations before all the seats are gone -- 626-798-6236 (phone 10 am-10 pm daily; no online reservations). Tickets are $18.

Who's Coming Out of the Closet? -- July 21, 2013

.
So everyone knows about us. We're into six-strings and fiddles, and even (gasp) banjos, and occasional affairs with (saints preserve us) an accordion or two. Sure, there was that nice Celtic harp, before we were lured away by the hot-spiced Cajun rubboard. And we've always been suckers for a uke in a little grass shack.
.
But it's time to come out. We're closet rockers. No, we absolutely loathe and abhor mindlessly thudding modern pop and brain-dead "dance" music. But that good kinda rock 'n roll, the kinda music jus' stirs the soul? We're there.
.
And for those of you ready to come out of the closet, too, we're betting we have company.
.
Which brings us to the reason for this little extra edition.
.
Especially for those heretofore contemplating a lonely evening at home with the string player's rubber exercise squeezums handball. Here's your emotional rescue:
.
♥ From 5:30-9 pm (Pacific), Palladia is airing BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND in their famous concert at New York's Madison Square Garden in 2000. Too ancient, says you? Au contraire, says we. Clarence is performing. No need to say more. Except that this usually only screens as half the concert. Tonight, it's the whooooole thing!
.
.
Full disclosure? Okay. The editor graduated from the four-session class at the Grammy Museum in "The Musical History of Bruce Springsteen," taught by museum director and author of "Greetings from E Street," Bob Santelli. The esteemed teacher who promptly awarded the Guide's editor an "A Plus" -- in writing -- upon completion of the class.
.
For those recovered from the shock enough to have regained sensibilities, or otherwise looking to go out because they need air after those startling revelations about how an acoustic guru can go astray, check the edition just below for plenty of, ahem, ACOUSTIC music. There's even a note on a weekday day series in there. Rock on!

Saturday update! July 19-21's mighty fine weekend -- 2013

.
Our Sunday morning addition to the Saturday morning update includes a "heads-up" for a Monday-through-Friday series, this week only:
.
Mon-Fri, Jul 22-26, in Hollywood:
11:15 am THE GET DOWN BOYS bring roots-Americana to the "Summer Sounds: World Music for Kids" at the Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N Highland Av, Hollywood 90068; 323-850-2000 or 213-480-3232. This is the absolute best opportunity to give your kids an immersive experience in Folk-Americana music this summer.
.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
.
Beyond that, many events were inserted as "late additions" through the day Friday, to what began that day as the weekend edition. But continuing needs arose to add even more, so those "extra-late" additions are right up front for you. Just remember to peruse the festival section and the rest of the already-published Saturday & Sunday -- and beyond-the-weekend -- listings that follow these additions!
.
First,
In Memoriam...
HELEN THOMAS died Saturday. The Guide's editor, as a former political journalist and columnist, wants you to know about her. Helen was a member of the White House Press Corps during ten Presidencies -- John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, shrub, and Barrack Obama. She was the grande dame of the D.C. media, and for decades, the privilege of asking the first question at every Presidential News Conference went to Helen. Until she challenged shrub with the question, "What has invading Iraq got to do with 9/11?" That was her last time to be recognized for a question during that administration. Helen was then forced into retirement by the wire service that had long employed her. But she wouldn't leave, founding her own syndicated bureau. That change turned her from reporter to commentator. And she quickly said something that was exploited by her enemies. When a proponent of backing Israel, no matter what, pressed her, she said US support should not be unquestioned. When asked if there should be conditions, she said, "You should get out of Palestine." No matter that millions in America and around the world -- and many in Israel -- agree with that. It brought her down. Oh, she continued with her bureau and its badly-shrunken client list. And sadly, it became evident that she didn't know when it was time to quit. And so it was all made into an ignominious end for one of the greatest White House journalists in history; and we are in danger of not remembering one of the most successful, pioneering woman reporters, ever. We will miss you, Helen, and your fiesty refusals to take wimpy presidential obfuscations for an answer. If there's a newsroom in the great beyond, give 'em hell, Helen.

.
++++++
.
LATE ADDITION...
Sat, Jul 20, in L.A.:
8 pm  MUCCA PAZZA from Chicago plays the FREE summer concert series at Levitt Pavilion MacArthur Park,  2230 W 6th St ( actually at S Park View St & Wilshire Bl), Los Angeles 90057.
+
It's "Revenge of the 'Band Nerds,' [as] Mucca Pazza's brash brass, rocking glock, and hockey-helmet amps transform the marching band into a post-punk spree."
+
When one of these reinterpretations of a marching band played the "Topanga Days" Festival (that one from the Bay Area), everyone was on their feet, laughing, watching, listening and dancing. This is pure fun, and can bring a surprisingly satisfying musical experience.

We got a late press release on this. With that Topanga Days experience vividly recalled, we had to bring this to you. It reads, "Not your typical marching band, Mucca Pazza leans towards rock with mandolins & accordions, their innovative arrangements allow them to deliver a dynamic, one-of-a-kind sound. Chicago's Mucca Pazza marches on, from the steel mill parking lots of Chicago across the nation. They march in formation, rip through drum cadences, bust out cinematic stories, and incite mass dance outbreaks. They channel everything from Bartok to a love-struck Godzilla, re-imagine the uptight 19th-century march, and make up soundtracks for classic Egyptian movies that never happened. Not bad for an eccentric gang of loud-and-proud, self-proclaimed band geeks."
+
"We're a marching band that thinks we're a rock band," exclaims sousaphoneplayer Mark Messing. More at http://muccapazza.com

Fri, Jul 19, in Altadena:
8 pm Top-notch Hawai'ian show with CHARLIE OYAMA and "MAI NA KUPUNA MAI PART II, KANIKAPILA!" at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; Phone for reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
It's a very special Hawaiian Show produced by the star himself, CHARLIE OYAMA. This is the second part of a hugely popular show, first shown at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, about, and featuring, Hawaiian music and stories and how they affect the Hawaiian Culture.
+
And the writers and principal performers have credentials than are recognizable far and wide. Charlie and Joe Lamanno were in the popular folk group THE TRAVELERS 3. The rest of the cast are all seasoned performers in the Hawaiian community of Southern California. "Something for everyone," says Charlie. "Slack Key Guitar, Ukulele, Hula, vocals, banjo, Hawaiian stories and humor....the viewers are invited to compare this culture with there own. They might be strikingly similar. People are people, wherever they live and whatever the color of their skins. Time to roast a pig, slice a pineapple and have a luau. Orchids, anyone?"
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane calls it, "CHARLIE OYAMA and his Hawaiian Blow Out. Generations explored in snappy stories, dance and song."
+
"MAI NA KUPUNA MAI PART II, KANIKAPILA!" is an interesting ensemble. We thought we'd share some of Charlie's notes. Charlie Oyama, slack key guitar and vocals; Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese Ancestry. From Honolulu, Hawai'i but now settled in Glendale, California. Hawaiian slack key guitar virtuoso who also plays a mean five string banjo. Passion for the Hawaiian language. Has lots of guitars. Public tournament tennischampion around L.A. Has lots of tennis rackets. Cooks great Hawaiian plate lunches and other Pacific palate pleasures. Gave up his day job to play music, clean yard, and cook. Looks cool in his Mercedes.
+
And there's Kapo Ku: singer, guitarist, composer (Hawaiian songs) chanter; Joseph Lamanno, bass and vocals; you've got stuff from a number of shows Joseph has worked there for you with different people; Aja Gample, ukulele and slack key guitar and is Charlie's granddaughter who represents the youth in MAI NA PUNUNA MAI and will show what happens when the little ones are no longer really little.
+
Sometimes, it's worth sharing the resume points. Joseph Lamanno, bass and vocals; a good Italian boy with roots in Sacramento; a genuine free and gentle spirit; bass player extraordinaire; after the Travelers Three, he did lots of road time with some great bands like the Association, the Turtles and Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, as well as keeping active in the L.A. studio scene; traded the chaos of L.A. for the serenity of the high desert in Silverado, California; is an accomplished artist in the stainedglass medium; has distinguished himself devoting much of his life supporting humanitarian causes and making the world a better place.

Saturday, July 20
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
.
On this date in 1969, "Men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon." Specifically, they were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The third member of their Apollo 11 crew, Michael Collins, waited alone for them in lunar orbit, to re-dock the spacecraft and get them home. A perfect example of, "They also serve who only stand and wait." There is great irony here: the landing was made on the moon's Sea of Tranquility, and the plaque left there proclaims, "We came in peace for all mankind." Yet the Apollo lunar exploration program was terminated early, to free-up more money for the Vietnam War. Tragically, we abandoned the hardware of Apollo and allowed our vaunted technological prowess to be relegated to narcissistic consumer gadgets and silly cartoon bird games. And we haven't been anywhere since, except in the fantasies of space movie blockbusters and their derivative amusement park rides that, together, are among the most profitable entertainment ventures of all time. Some of us still want our future back.

7 pm TALL MEN GROUP plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations, (10 am-10 pm) 626-798-6236.
+
This ensemble brings together six of the finest singer-songwriters in Los Angeles. They are Severin Browne, Edward Tree, Jimmy "Muffin" Yessian, Marty Axelrod, Jeff Kossack, and John Stowers. They have been meeting once a month to enjoy Jimmy's cooking (a lot!) and bring-in songs written to a new theme each month. The very best of those songs are arranged for the band, then included in the stage show. The Tall Men show is rich with brotherly rapport, crafted harmonies, stories and musicianship. But that's only the "icing." The "cake" is songwriting at a very high level -- accessible, fresh, original, often funny, always moving. Audiences from Oregon to San Diego rave that "every song is a gem." They impressed mightily when they played this year's "Lummis Day Festival."

+
One of America's premiere a Capella groups, Street Corner Renaissance returns to the Coffee Gallery Backstage and promises a show "Hotter Than July." Earlier this year the group opened for Otis Williams' TEMPTATIONS at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center, where they received not one, but two standing ovations and alls for encores. SCR's engaging performance style has delighted audiences all across the country, where they have opened for such notable acts as Boyz II Men, Chuck Berry, and Kool & The Gang, plus a host of others, including The Emotions, Escovedo Family Orchestra with Sheila E., The Impressions, and Morris Day & the Time. This high energy quintet can really sing; oozing with charm and humor, when the curtains go up, Street Corner Renaissance is fun for the entire family. They are dedicated to preserving the art form of a Capella street corner singing and they do entertain. They were favorites at the mega-"Concert for Haiti," which featured Grammy winners and a cross-spectrum of acoustic genres, produced by the Acoustic Americana Music Guide.

7 pm JIM KWESKIN and THE CROCKETT SISTERS BAND play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations (10 am-10 pm) 626-798-6236.
+
Yes, "that" Jim Kweskin, the one of The Jim Kweskin Jug Band.with the sensational Crockett Sisters Band. Folk legend Jim Kweskin who, back in the day, shared stages with Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and The Doors.
+
He recently joined THE CROCKETT SISTERS to play the main stage at the annuak "LUMMIS DAY FESTIVAL." And there's a fun side story there. The "Sisters" had to become the Sisters to play the gig. Since a real, church-based gospel group was booked to follow Jim and the act heretofore known as THE EVANGENITALS (yes, read that carefully), well, that just wouldn't do. Hence, THE CROCKETT SISTERS were born, and the name stuck.
+
By any name, when JIM KWESKIN joins Northeast L.A.'s Crockett Sisters at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, you can expect a magical collaboration the ensemble first delivered at the Lummis Fest.
+
Kweskin created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. In the early '60s, Kweskin founded the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, with Fritz Richmond, Geoff Muldaur, Bob Siggins and Bruno Wolfe. Maria Muldaur, formerly with the Even Dozen Jug Band, joined the band in 1963. Jim is a legend. He has continued at a high, retro-inspired innovative level, entertainer doing his thing all over America.
+
THE CROCKETT SISTERS BAND, in addition to what you already know, bring Alabama-born songwriter Juli Crockett (of Montecito Heights) and her best friend Lisa Dee (of Garvanza), who have been creating beautiful harmonies together for almost 10 years. Their voices combine in a way that many have said only siblings should, therefore they coined themselves the Crockett Sisters. Having lent their voices to many other musical projects, including the sensational alt-country Evangenitals, the Crockett Sisters embrace the "mind-blowing melding of voices in melodious musical magic." Anybody who witnessed their "Lummis" collaboration with Jim Kweskin knows what magic is in store. More at www.crockettsisters.com

Thursday, and Here's (Not) Just the Musical Highlights -- July 18, 2013

.
.
Happy Birthday, NELSON MANDELA, a man who taught the world to overcome every reason for bitterness, hatred, and resentment, and instead practiced -- and taught -- love, cooperation, and how to imagine and obtain a bright and inclusive, creative and nurturing future for all. As you turn 95 today, we don't want to lose you. There are still many right here in America who need to be your students.

Well now, that DOES sound interesting!
+
Enchanted Realms members Scot Ryder and Theresa Rochelle-Ross "construct a vivid world of poetic and fanciful imagery woven around themes ranging from 'love’s varied secrets' to 'worlds beyond the mystic.'  Utilizing a sophisticated palette of colors for painting their musical expressions, Scot and Theresa exquisitely deliver each song to the listener with passion, warmth, love and joy, as well as with a graceful charm, quiet wit and a relaxed atmosphere of playfulness." They do have strong promo.
+
Scot Ryder is a composer and fingerstyle acoustic guitarist who brings his audiences an uplifting experience. Renowned for his cutting-edge style, described as a mix of folk, classical and flamenco, Scot blends his guitar playing seamlessly with colorful touches of melodic harmonics, percussive tapping, flourishes and embellishments.  His gorgeous original pieces and unique performance technique have made him a favorite among acoustic and folk enthusiasts worldwide.
+
Theresa Rochelle-Ross is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist & songwriter whose pure, haunting voice is the centerpiece of her performances.  As the underpinning for her vocals, Theresa deftly weaves her skills on folk-harp, wood flutes, recorders, penny whistles, and ethnic drums in compelling interpretations.  A veteran of the folk circuit, her appealing talents have captivated appreciative audiences over many years of performing in pubs, coffee houses, concert halls and a variety of old world and new-age festivals.

Wednesday: Two greats join a newbie, and more -- July 17, 2013

.
The big news on the evening's performance scene is that accomplished stars HERB PEDERSEN and BILL BRYSON are backing-up a rapidly rising songwriter named JORDAN SOLLITTO. That's at 8 in Altadena, and you should jump on reservations. Plus, the legendary FREEBO is in town for his monthly session with musical guests.
Details on both -- and more -- are below.
.
First, some news quickies...
For openers: a very full edition of the Guide's "News & Reviews" is almost ready to publish. We're nailing-down the facts on a rather shocking investigative piece.
.
In other quick news, the Guide's presence on Facebook ended today, due to mysteriously being banished there. If one of our staffers feels like playing their games, a future Facebook presence is possible. But the editor has had it with that over-commercialized chat room.
.
Now, on to highlights of Wednesday's music scene...

He says, "Once again, I look forward to another great night of music at the sweet music room of Genghis Cohen (also an excellent restaurant). I go on at 9 pm, the amazing Chad Watson on bass and several possible excelent guest musicians. Fuzzbee Morse was in an unfortunate accident a few weeks ago, got hit by a car while walking to his own car after a gig, and most lokely won't be playing (but you never know!)...he's recovering, no damage to his precious hands, but very painful over much of his body, particularly his ribs (wish him well here, I'll pass it on to him). ROBERT TEPPER opens at 7:30 and NICK JAMESON goes on at 8:15, followed by yours truly. I promise you a very entertaining evening of excellent music, humor, and perhaps even cerebral stimulation....and really good food."

+
It isn't often that the lead item is who is "SITTING IN" in an ensemble of musical friends, but this is a special set of circumstances. So, sitting-in are HERB PEDERSEN & BILL BRYSON, orchestrating the guitar and songwriting prowess of the top-billed player in JORDAN SOLLITTO & FRIENDS.
+
There's a good story here. JORDAN SOLLITTO put himself through the University of Arizona singing covers in area nightclubs. A rather long time ago. Then followed 30 years of grim corporate servitude that left precious little time for anything other than spreadsheets, sales meetings and – more thankfully – a wonderful family. Recently, like a singing Rip Van Winkle, he emerged from his musical slumber and began playing anew.
+
Enter the legendary HERB PEDERSEN, who recalls, “Jordan came to me a few years back as a weekend strummer looking to polish his technique. Next thing you know he started writing tunes and it was like a damn broke… with a lot of really terrific music rushing out."
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Sharing an evening’s worth of original songs that drift between country and folk, he promises to inspire anyone who has ever set their dreams aside… then wondered if they could rekindle them."
+
Sitting in for their third time with Jordan are HERB PEDERSEN and BILL BRYSON, whose musical resumes intersected in the Desert Rose Band and Laurel Canyon Ramblers and also include the Bluegrass Cardinals as well as studio and touring tenures with the likes of John Denver, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, and Dan Fogelberg.
+
“I’ll pay you back if you don’t enjoy yourself,” declares Sollitto. “And you can trust me…I’m in senior management.”

Tuesday Night Music -- Clubs, Parks, & elsewhere -- and an anniversary -- July 16, 2013

.
On this day in 1981, singer-songwriter HARRY CHAPIN was killed in a crash on the Long Island Expressway. He was 38 years old and at what would sadly be the apex of his career. Harry was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2011.
.
HARRY CHAPIN and his brother TOM CHAPIN worked independently. Both fathered musical offspring. Harry's musician daughter JEN CHAPIN says, "My family maintains a store at http://www.harrychapinmusic.com offering a wide variety of music (including some of my own) and other goodies, all to benefit the 'Harry Chapin Foundation.' Of course there is also the work of 'Why Hunger' and 'Long Island Cares' which keep Harry's dream of ending hunger alive."
.
A comment today on the Harry Chapin Facebook page:
"One of the greatest concerts I ever saw in my life was Harry Chapin - Steve Goodman and Pete Seeger at Huntington High School back in the day for $5. We got to sit on the floor next to the stage with an audience of about 1,500 -- for 4 hrs. Amazing just amazing!"
.
Harry Chapin's many songs are timeless. Take a moment and listen to his classic, "Cat's in the Cradle." We like this version best, because his widow and son appear, explaining the song's genesis, before Harry's vintage performance:

ONE TO AVOID TONIGHT:
.
We do not ordinarily do this. But before we list and describe all the fine shows to go see, we must express this caution. Social responsibility requires that we do. Tonight at the City National Grove of Anaheim, there is a performance by TED NUGENT. That is the same Ted Nugent who just accused the dead Trayvon Martin of being a racist who ruined George Zimmerman's life. We don't see any need to say more.

+
Venue impresario Bob Stane calls them, "A unique 'take' on the music of our lives. A tuneful tour d’ farce. Funny, yes, but they do the music perfectly.  They will cleanse your musical soul. Even if it does not need a good scrubbing."
+
THE ROCK BOTTOM BOYS have been serving-up a "bone-a-fied" act since 2009 with their four part harmonies, homespun vocal styling, boot-stomping music and well-seasoned showmanship. Tried and true hits from bands like The Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osborne, and Sublime are transformed into porch-friendly anthems when filtered through these hillbilly souls.
+
There's Shank. There's Ray Haney on bass guitar. There's Big Tone. There's Tony Quinn on lead guitar. There's J.R., James Salters, on washboard. And there's Lucky Coot, Charles Hurley, on banjo and jug. Their new millennium vaudeville approach excites and entertains all ages with nostalgic recollection, irreverent humor and visual spectacle. They bring it here from the faraway hills of Northern California.
+
Bob Stane adds, "Do not underrate this act. This is at the top of the food chain. At first glance, The Rock Bottom Boys look like your average hillbilly bluegrass band. That, however, couldn't be further from the truth. The Rock Bottom Boys' (RBB) unique and original approach to classic rock 'n' roll songs filtered through the eyes and ears of hillbillies has been humorously compared to a train wreck: 'you just can’t turn away.' A closer look reveals an innovative approach to musical entertainment. RBB blends the oldies, classic rock and bluegrass into a melting pot of American music. With unparalleled four part harmonies, their vocal interpretations turn even the hardest rock tunes into great group singalongs. THE ROCK BOTTOM BOYS pride themselves on being more than just a band, they are a tried and true act. Having cut their teeth playing various Fairs and Festivals throughout the West, they have honed their sense of humor, showmanship and versatility to offer a great entertainment value to any venue." Bob Stane emphasizes, "I really like this act. So original in concept and performance. This is an encore. Everyone loved them last time. You will search far and even farther to equal the music and comedy of this act. Bring those folks you want to introduce to The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Impress them while having a great time."
