WHY WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, now requiring a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments. It’s far too time-consuming. So we began posting the calendar and news on Blogspot. We’ll see how this works, and we welcome your feedback, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com .
.
FUTURE EVENTS are posted into 2009. We update often, and we add a BUNCH of concerts, festivals, club gigs, workshops, and recurring events as dates arrive.
.
LATEST NEWS FEATURES always post separately. The most recent edition will post this weekend, or by Monday, anyway. The most recent previous edition posted August 4; recent editions are available at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com; older archived editions are available on the myspace page (www.myspace.com/laacoustic), by using the “View All” button and scrolling, and if you don’t see what you want, then journey farther back by using the “older entries” button and scrolling, as many times as necessary. You can go all the way back to when acoustic music was made by trees crashing to the floor of the primeval forests when the dinosaurs got too rambunctious.
.
ANNIVERSARIES – things that happened in music, entertainment, and elsewhere in history – are on hiatus.

Born of the timeless tradition of the all-night music session, MOLLY'S REVENGE is a dynamic, acoustic Celtic band known for its unique and infectious on-stage enthusiasm. The classic combination of bagpipes, whistle, fiddle, and song -- set against a backdrop of guitar, bouzouki, and mandola accompaniment -- guarantee an enjoyable experience for all fans of Scottish and Irish music. Molly's Revenge have performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and at many of the top folk festivals and performing arts events in the USA, and prestigious events in Australia and China. Their arrangements of traditional Celtic jigs and reels bring these dance tunes up to date with a driving, hard-edged accent that always leaves audiences shouting for more. Their seventh full-length recording was produced by JOHN DOYLE, a founding member of Irish supergroup Solas. Guest performers on the new record include percussionist FRASER STONE (Old Blind Dogs) and Moira Smiley (VOCO). The new CD's release is set for 2008. Molly's Revenge is DAVID BREWER on bagpipes, whistles, and bodhran; JOHN WEED on fiddles; STUART MASON on guitar and mandola; and PETE HAWORTH on bouzouki and vocals. Sun, Aug 10:
4 pm KATHLEEN GRACE BAND plays a matinee show at the Jazz Bakery, 3233 Helms Blvd, Culver City. Kathleen, a fine jazz pianist / vocalist, says, “Free advance copies of the new CD, “MIRROR” for the first 10 audience members.” Kathleen adds, “[The show is] followed by a summer after-party, next door at Father's Office, where you will find the best burger and beer (and even wine) in L.A. Come for the music and stay for the hang.”
+
You’ve heard her CD tracks of radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” The Washington Post covered her DC show (May 30 edition). They wrote, “During her opening set at Blues Alley on Wednesday night, vocalist KATHLEEN GRACE confessed that she wasn't quite sure how to describe the music she performs -- and often composes -- though anyone who detected hints of TOM WAITS and WAYNE SHORTER was on the right track.“
+
“Grace, however, wears her influences lightly. She may be drawn to Waits's curiously unfolding scenarios and fitful rhythms, and she's clearly fond of elliptical, Shorter-like ballads. Yet Wednesday's performance suggested that Grace's role models, who include JONI MITCHELL, LEONARD COHEN, RANDY NEWMAN and NANCY WILSON, have only encouraged her to find her own way. She has a lovely voice -- a lithe, ethereal soprano -- and both the rhythmic and harmonic assurance to scat with finesse and to negotiate hairpin turns.”
+
“Grace spent part of her show providing listeners with a sneak peek at her new seven-track release ‘Mirror,’ casting a dreamy spell with the self-penned title cut and infusing Newman's "Let Me Go" with the requisite bluesy ennui. ‘The Furies,’ an original tune that Grace described as mix of Shakespeare, personal angst and the Peggy Lee hit ‘Fever,’ was particularly enjoyable, at once smart, alluring and evocative. The singer also drew tunes from her earlier album ‘Songbird,’ most notably a bright, scat-laced rendition of ‘Surrey With the Fringe on Top.’ Prominently featuring pianist MATT POLITANO, Grace's nimble trio moved back and forth between impressionistic and swing settings. Unfortunately, guitarist PERRY SMITH, who has made significant contributions to Grace's recordings, wasn't on the bill.”
+
Find that in the Washington Post, and their muscian’s round-up slide show with Kathleen, SHERYL CROW, LUCINDA WILLIAMS, and others, at www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/29/AR2008052903989.html. Tix $25, students $15.

7 pm ROUND MOUNTAIN, from Santa Fe, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. If you’ve never heard the rippling strings of the African kora, or someone playing trumpet and accordion simultaneously, don’t miss a chance to investigate Round Mountain. A 3-piece band from Santa Fe, New Mexico, they span the globe with their influences and instruments, weaving it all into original and heartfelt compositions. Their instrumentation is broad, including percussion, Turkish saz, Irish bouzouki, and many other resonant acoustic instruments.
+
The music of siblings ROBBY & CHAR ROTHSCHILD presents many extremes – beautiful acoustic numbers, wild bagpipes, trumpet and accordion played by one person at the same time, Bulgarian zydeco, klezmer and Malian rhythms, to just name a few. But while their music is varied, it is far from random. There is a solvent behind all these different dry ingredients that allows them to blend seamlessly: original songwriting with respect and love for their music. This is Round Mountain, playing their own style that they call traveling music. Round Mountain’s journeying takes many forms, internal and geographical, and each brings a new layer to their latest album Truth And Darkness (Fast Horse Recordings.) Through this traveling, their background ranges from Balkan and West African styles to traditional Appalachian music, from Celtic to funk. Char has played in Tokyo with the Old Moscow Circus, toured Australia with the Afro-funk band Panjea and recorded with Latif Bolat. Robby has studied djembe in Mali and the United States, as well as toured and recorded internationally with KIP WINGER, PANJEA and OTTMAR LIEBERT. Renowned bassist JON GAGAN (upright bass) joins the Rothschild brothers on “Truth And Darkness.” Known for his work with Liebert, Gagan brings his immaculate musicianship to the band and creates a soulful and rhythmic chemistry with the two brothers. $15.

+
The Los Angeles Times says, "Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer."
