WHY WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM: after a long presence on MySpace, that site suddenly changed parameters to accept only short posts, now requiring a ponderous and VERY time-consuming process to list events in small increments. It’s far too time-consuming. So we began posting the calendar and news on Blogspot. We’ll see how this works, and we welcome your feedback, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com .
.
FUTURE EVENTS are posted into 2009. We update often, and we add a BUNCH of concerts, festivals, club gigs, workshops, and recurring events as dates arrive.
.
LATEST NEWS FEATURES always post separately. The most recent edition will post this weekend, or by Monday, anyway. The most recent previous edition posted August 4; recent editions are available at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com; older archived editions are available on the myspace page (www.myspace.com/laacoustic), by using the “View All” button and scrolling, and if you don’t see what you want, then journey farther back by using the “older entries” button and scrolling, as many times as necessary. You can go all the way back to when acoustic music was made by trees crashing to the floor of the primeval forests when the dinosaurs got too rambunctious.
.
ANNIVERSARIES – things that happened in music, entertainment, and elsewhere in history – are on hiatus.

Jack says, “I will be performing hits I wrote and songs from the new album.” Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “A lovely evening.”

With smooth, sweet, vocals that meet lightning-fast picking, the Dime Box Band are the girls next door, if the girls next door just happened to be a damn good country band. They’ve been described as “Tammy Wynette singing Gram Parsons songs if Roy Acuff was backing.” Dime Box Band is three women hell-bent on saving animals, righting wrongs, and making home-grown music in a store-bought world. They are KRISTI (guitar, banjo and singing out front), EDIE (fiddle, mandolin and sparkling harmonies; also of award-winning Murphy’s Flaw) and YOLANDE (lead guitar and deep, rich harmonies) blending their varied influences to create a dynamic brand of compelling Americana. Dan tells us, “In the meantime, please enjoy the first video from the album, with 30-voice ALS Choir including patients (PALS), friends, family and caregivers, all joining in song to make a point. “THE AMERICANA MUSIC CIRCLE” in-the-round with JOHNNY NICHOLSON, JOHN STOWERS, & BILL DOBBINS…
"Singer/songwriter JOHNNY NICHOLSON reflects a deep and diverse talent. Unafraid to venture into new territory, he's lived in California, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Europe. Nicholson's motley of adventurous explorations in geography is paralleled with his musical styles. He can play it all, from pop folk, to reggae, to smooth lullabies, to rock. Ultimately, Nicholson is an artist you would take with you to celebrate, to ponder, and to live." - Lauren Proctor, Northeast Indie In-Tune. Info & live tracks at www.myspace.com/JohnnyNicholson.
+
JOHN STOWERS has been called one of the most promising singer-songwriters in Southern California. “A Rootsy Pop Rocker with surprising soul. Songs filled with original thoughtful lyrics and melodies that soar.” He draws from a rich history of personal musical exposure, reflecting echoes of everything from Liverpool to Memphis. Stowers is supported on his album by some of L.A.’s premier blues and roots players, including producer-guitarist Edward Tree, Bonnie Raitt percussionist Debra Dobkin, Lucinda Williams’ bassist Taras Prodaniuk, Dwight Yoakam keyboardist Skip Edwards, drummers Dave Beyer (Melissa Etheridge/Motels) and Tom Fillman, and harmony vocalists Teresa James, John Townsend and Molly Pasutti. Stowers, however places himself firmly in the field of rock ‘n’ roll – his preferred musical realm because he believes, “it always reinvents itself”. John recently won a 2004 Billboard World Song Contest award. “Jimmy’s Song” won 3rd place in the R&B/Blues category. It’s gratifying validation for a performing songwriter who’s been out there playing bars/coffee houses and patiently honing his craft. John’s currently completing production of his record which is due to be released by the end of this year. Stay Tuned!

BILL DOBBINS is a veteran singer-songwriter who has performed in venues like Folk City, The Cafe Wha?, The Bitter End and Izzy Young's Folklore Center, along with legends like Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, Phil Ochs, John Hammond and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. More at www.billdobbinsmusic.com.

Lineup includes CIAN, from Ireland, continuing his West Coast Tour 2008 in support of the worldwide release of his 4 song EP. CIAN is a young singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Cork, Ireland. Hot Press says, “This is impressive stuff, full of charm and style, and song arrangements serving as fitting vehicles for Cian's handsome voice." Garret Swayne, host of the Main Street Songwriter Showcase, says, “His music is an urgent, melody-driven fusion of acoustic guitar with electronic beats and synths. Despite his tender years, Cian (pronounced kee-n) has shared the stage with a number of renowned Irish artists such as Cathy Davey, The 4 of Us, and Juliet Turner. Cian completed his first West Coast tour of the US in late 2007 and is now back for select shows in August 2008. His music was featured on popular LA acoustic radio show Tied to the Tracks on with host Larry Wines in 2007. Cian’s debut EP has recently been chosen as ‘Pick of the Fortnight’ in Hot Press Magazine’s ‘Garageland’ section. His new EP entitled Closer will be hitting the retail and online stores very soon and supported by a string of live dates at home and overseas. Cian has a voice to be reckoned with, a mellifluous, pitch-perfect instrument unique in range and melodic sweep. 8 pm KARLA BONOFF with KENNY EDWARDS presented by the Bodie House Concert series at the Thousand Oaks Civic Auditorium, Scherr Forum Theater, 2100 Thousand Oaks Bl, Thousand Oaks 91362; info, www.toaks.org; tix, www.toaks.org/theatre/tickets/events/event.asp?eventID=1252; series info, www.bodiehouse.com or 818-621-8309. Rene Bodie tells us, “We are presenting a different kind of show for our next venture at Bodie House Music. We are producing a show in an attempt to bring nationally-known artists to the local community. For our first concert we are presenting KARLA BONOFF, ‘Someone to Lay Down Beside Me,’ ‘If He's Ever Near,’ ‘I Can't Hold On,’ ‘All My Life,’ with KENNY EDWARDS, co-founder of The Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt and Bobby Kimmel.” Kenny will open for Karla then back her on guitar and mandolin. Details follow:
+
KARLA BONOFF - From the mid seventies through the early eighties, with songs like "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me," "If He's Ever Near", "I Can't Hold On", "All My Life", and “Personally,” if there was a singer-songwriter album, Karla Bonoff probably either wrote a song for it or sang backup. Her honey voice is the same, and her chiseled features are as if she has been frozen in time back to that 1979 album cover for “Restless Nights,” posing in that pink dress. Bonoff grew up in Los Angeles and was only 16 when she entered the heart of the hootenanny scene in 1969, when the first hints of the coming singer-songwriter wave were coalescing around The Troubadour with the likes of Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Elton John, and others. She met Kenny Edwards there, and Wendy Waldman and Andrew Gold, with whom she formed the band BRYNDLE. Edwards and Gold moved on to found LINDA RONSTADT’s group, the STONE PONEYS, which began Bonoff's association with Ronstadt. Edwards and Gold stayed with Ronstadt for years, while Waldman and Bonoff went their solo ways.
+
Bonoff’s solo career took off when she composed three of the hits for the album that secured Linda Ronstadt’s superstardom, “Hasten Down The Wind.” The songs were "Lose Again," "If He's Ever Near," and "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me," all Bonoff compositions, and are three of the first four cuts on Karla’ re-mastered "All My Life" solo album. Karla made several hit albums of her own (produced by Edwards) including the hit singles “I Can’‘t Hold On,” “Baby Don’t Go,” “Personally,” and “Please Be The One.”
Bonoff has also performed for several movies, but the centerpiece of her career has been her writing, with songs recorded by Wynonna Judd (“Tell Me Why”), Bonnie Raitt (“Home”), the Dirt Band (“You Believed in Me”), and others. Her song “All My Life,” recorded as a duet with Ronstadt and Aaron Neville, won the GRAMMY for “Best Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.” People magazine once ranked “All My Life” as one of the top 5 most popular wedding songs.
+
KENNY EDWARDS (founding member of the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt), Karla’s longtime friend and bandmate, opens her shows and plays guitar and mandolin with Karla. Edwards is worth the price of admission with his soulful songwriting and masterful instrumentation. A key figure in the American folk-rock movement of the late-sixties and early seventies, audiences soon realize just how well they already know the sound of Edwards' voice and his stellar musicianship.
+
After three-and-a-half decades of performing, Karla continues to perform for her fans, though she no longer keeps the punishing 300-day-a-year road schedule of her early career. She has no plans to quit. "I'm happy people still want to hear me," she said.

“Canadian Singer-Songwriter Phil Christie shines with his song “Rearview Mirror”, with beautiful lyrical imagery and Contemporary Folk production and songwriting. His new album also named “Rearview Mirror” has just been released. Fans of David Wilcox and Gordon Lightfoot will appreciate his music. This artist is one to watch RATING: ***** (5 out of 5 Stars)” - INTERNATIONAL ACOUSTIC MUSIC AWARDS July 30, 2008
+
“Back in the heydays of James Taylor and Jackson Browne, there were second tier singer/songwriters that a lot of people liked more that were highly influential and very talented but just didn’t have that something that put them over the top. Christie is in the mold of those musical soldiers that felt more like a pal than an unreachable star, who didn’t drop the hits but left you with something more lasting. Think comparing Fred Neil to James Taylor. With some highly talented pals that know the ropes bringing home the sound, Christie’s tales of every day life are sure to ring a bell when you are looking for some meaty songwriting you can get into. It may not be vintage Dylan, but there’s nothing wrong with vintage John Batdorf.” - Chris Spector MIDWEST RECORD July 13, 2008
+
“Folk guitars travel over the highways. “Midnight moon on a night, muddy, black as coal, trail of dust and a heavy load. Everything I once held dear in my rearview mirror.” A familiar lonely tale, but told with new poetry. “Desert wind blows a tumbleweed up on the rise” evokes one feeling and a moment later “sunlight around her like a prayer” digs deeper into another feeling, a memory of my life lived, perhaps a bit callously. I’m sure some of my past would yell at me -> you weren’t looking, you were very callous. Ah. Takes good music to pull out confessions from a hard-hearted man. And Phil obliges with much good music. Shoutout tunes are the beautiful Random Acts Of Kindness, a tale of the small flowers I let slide through my fingers, and Me & My Guitar, a song that many people write but few succeed at. Phil succeeded. “Three chords and a simply melody opened up my heart and set me free.” Thanks for stirring my soul!” - EARTASTE.COM June 3, 2008
+
“If you like your music richly mellow, flavored just right with equal doses of Americana and Folk, then Phil Christie, a Neil Diamond similar-sounder, is worth a listen. Blessed with a smooth, easy and clear tone, this Canadian is out with his latest, Rearview Mirror. On an album filled with anchored emotion, Christie is the guy you play at night, late at night, when the candle flickers and the wine is working, when thoughts run and race -- when music does its best work. The multi-talented Christie – he draws major duty by producing, playing and writing here –has pulled together an album that’s not going to appeal to the hats and buckle crowd; rather, if you lean towards middle-of-the-road country that’s easy and melodic to the ear, this is for you.” - George Peden, COUNTRYSTARSONLINE.COM June 17, 2008

Born of the timeless tradition of the all-night music session, MOLLY'S REVENGE is a dynamic, acoustic Celtic band known for its unique and infectious on-stage enthusiasm. Their seventh full-length recording was produced by JOHN DOYLE, a founding member of Irish supergroup Solas. Guest performers on the new record include percussionist FRASER STONE (Old Blind Dogs) and Moira Smiley (VOCO). The new CD's release is set for 2008. 4 pm KATHLEEN GRACE BAND plays a matinee show at the Jazz Bakery, 3233 Helms Blvd, Culver City. Kathleen, a fine jazz pianist / vocalist, says, “Free advance copies of the new CD, “MIRROR” for the first 10 audience members.” Kathleen adds, “[The show is] followed by a summer after-party, next door at Father's Office, where you will find the best burger and beer (and even wine) in L.A. Come for the music and stay for the hang.”
+
You’ve heard her CD tracks of radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” The Washington Post covered her DC show (May 30 edition). They wrote, “During her opening set at Blues Alley on Wednesday night, vocalist KATHLEEN GRACE confessed that she wasn't quite sure how to describe the music she performs -- and often composes -- though anyone who detected hints of TOM WAITS and WAYNE SHORTER was on the right track.“
+
“Grace, however, wears her influences lightly. She may be drawn to Waits's curiously unfolding scenarios and fitful rhythms, and she's clearly fond of elliptical, Shorter-like ballads. Yet Wednesday's performance suggested that Grace's role models, who include JONI MITCHELL, LEONARD COHEN, RANDY NEWMAN and NANCY WILSON, have only encouraged her to find her own way. She has a lovely voice -- a lithe, ethereal soprano -- and both the rhythmic and harmonic assurance to scat with finesse and to negotiate hairpin turns.”
+
“Grace spent part of her show providing listeners with a sneak peek at her new seven-track release ‘Mirror,’ casting a dreamy spell with the self-penned title cut and infusing Newman's "Let Me Go" with the requisite bluesy ennui. ‘The Furies,’ an original tune that Grace described as mix of Shakespeare, personal angst and the Peggy Lee hit ‘Fever,’ was particularly enjoyable, at once smart, alluring and evocative. The singer also drew tunes from her earlier album ‘Songbird,’ most notably a bright, scat-laced rendition of ‘Surrey With the Fringe on Top.’ Prominently featuring pianist MATT POLITANO, Grace's nimble trio moved back and forth between impressionistic and swing settings. Unfortunately, guitarist PERRY SMITH, who has made significant contributions to Grace's recordings, wasn't on the bill.”

7 pm ROUND MOUNTAIN, from Santa Fe, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. If you’ve never heard the rippling strings of the African kora, or someone playing trumpet and accordion simultaneously, don’t miss a chance to investigate Round Mountain. A 3-piece band from Santa Fe, New Mexico, they span the globe with their influences and instruments, weaving it all into original and heartfelt compositions. Their instrumentation is broad, including percussion, Turkish saz, Irish bouzouki, and many other resonant acoustic instruments.
+
The music of siblings ROBBY & CHAR ROTHSCHILD presents many extremes – beautiful acoustic numbers, wild bagpipes, trumpet and accordion played by one person at the same time, Bulgarian zydeco, klezmer and Malian rhythms, to just name a few. But while their music is varied, it is far from random. There is a solvent behind all these different dry ingredients that allows them to blend seamlessly: original songwriting with respect and love for their music. This is Round Mountain, playing their own style that they call traveling music. Round Mountain’s journeying takes many forms, internal and geographical, and each brings a new layer to their latest album Truth And Darkness (Fast Horse Recordings.) Through this traveling, their background ranges from Balkan and West African styles to traditional Appalachian music, from Celtic to funk. Char has played in Tokyo with the Old Moscow Circus, toured Australia with the Afro-funk band Panjea and recorded with Latif Bolat. Robby has studied djembe in Mali and the United States, as well as toured and recorded internationally with KIP WINGER, PANJEA and OTTMAR LIEBERT. Renowned bassist JON GAGAN (upright bass) joins the Rothschild brothers on “Truth And Darkness.” Known for his work with Liebert, Gagan brings his immaculate musicianship to the band and creates a soulful and rhythmic chemistry with the two brothers. $15.

+
The Los Angeles Times says, "Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer." Tom Lehrer himself says, "I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs. And the rhymes actually rhyme, they don't just 'rhyne.'" A video of Roy’s performance of his song, “Creation Science 101,” made the front page of YouTube recently and garnered over 730,000 views, and 11,000 comments, many of them coherent.

And the rhymes actually rhyme, they don't just 'rhyne.'" Joni Mitchell says, "Roy's lyrics move beyond poetry and achieve perfection." $18.

Jackson Browne is my favourite rock singer; I like his songs because when you listen to his music, it makes you feel what he feels. Jackson Browne has always been one of my favourite music artists and I couldn't pass up any opportunity to see him even if his tickets are hard to come by. Before my friend and I used to attend their concerts even their tickets are often sky high; now we found a site where we found cheap tickets .Here is the link:
