MEMORIAL DAY MAY HAVE PASSED, BUT…
+
Many Americans wear the various uniforms of service to the nation, from the Marines and Airmen to the Sailors and Soldiers to the Coast Guardsmen to the local police and firefighters and more. Many of them put their lives on the line every day, and some of them lose their lives. We hadn’t received anything from any of our many artist and musician friends that spoke to any of this in advance of Memorial Day, but on the day itself, we did. Some of it demands to be shared with you now.
+
JEANIE CUNNINGHAM paid tribute to our soldiers on YouTube with a song she wrote and produced called "We Will Remember." It has fine, exceptionally well-produced visual images, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARGrPfEbKAo&feature=channel_page
+
There’s another YouTube offering at www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpLdrvPHYVg&NR=1 that has this accompanying text: “Some people think that an American soldier is a mindless killing machine with no remorse or compassion. This couldnt be farther from the truth. The fact is they have emotions like anyone else they feel, pain, happiness, sorrow, pity, compassion, sympathy, remorse, and sometimes pure rage like any person would feel if put into the position they are put in each and every day. They are doing A job and doing it to the best of there abillity. Dont blame the soldier for the choices are government makes but instead praise the American soldier for being so brave and loyal to his or hers country and to the mission at hand. This video shows the human side of a soldier. God Bless our Troops.” It’s pop music but it has fine video images.
+
SARAH McLAUGHLIN’s “The Arms of the Angels” is used with powerful images of fallen members of the American military, on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6TfTC5opwc&feature=related
+
There are many, many more facilitators of remembrance on YouTube, some memorializing their lost friends or other specific people who have fallen in Iraq or Afghanistan. We did all the exploration we could undertake without becoming functionally useless, and without falling into an abyss of overwhelming sadness at the lives cut short, the lost promise of all those who have died while wearing the uniforms of the United States.
+
We should be mindful that not all war casualties are among the dead. A record proportion of traumatic brain injuries have come from US military involvement in Iraq, due to the prevalence of “IED” roadside bombs. One in five veterans are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with some form of PTSD. To date, that’s about 338,000. Caring for those with physical and psychological injuries will be obligations our society will bear for the lifetimes of those wounded and the far-reaching needs of their families and children. Lincoln first spoke of the need to care for the ones who shall have borne the battle, and for their widows, and their orphans. And many forgotten warriors are still with us from past conflicts, with needs that remain underserved or are as yet altogether unmet.
+
We received a poem from by Donna Hatton, written by her in 2003 and spoken by her husband, cowboy poet Tom Hatton, at a concert the two performed that year for a gathering of American ex-POWs. We humbly present it for you:
+
Salute

They came from every walk of life.
These men and women to fight and die.
They hit the beaches, drove a tank,
and there were those who went to fly.

They were doctors, nurses, cowboys, and farmers
from wheat fields and the open plains.
The common humanity who answered the call
and their families who did not complain.

They faced a foe in Europe and Asia
where they would eventually have to go.
Fighting in rain and mud, desert heat
and winter’s freezing snow.

They ate their rations in their foxholes
and slept when they thought they could.
and wondered, always wondered,
if they'd be killed wherever they stood.

Some were captured by the enemy,
put away alone in a cell.
There they fought another fight
for them a living hell.

Those that came home were quiet and frail,
some with minds and bodies broken
from hardships and horrors that,
for years, would remain unspoken.

We sat and listened to a reunion
between two of those battle-scarred friends.
Those soldiers now reunited (after half a century)
"Oh! MY GOD! Joe. Where you been?"

As we stood to say the pledge we looked at heroes,
warriors from the past.
I knew I was standing on hallowed ground,
among the very last.

Of these Patriots who gave their all
to the flag and country they hold dear.
The Chaplains, soldiers from air and sea,
the fliers, the bombardiers.

We salute you for the sacrifices
that we know you made for those like me.
With all our hearts, we thank you.
Because of you, this country is free!
.
.
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
.
May Peace prevail on Earth. We can’t imagine a finer tribute to our veterans than that hope and wish and prayer.

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

WHERE TO FIND WHAT WE DO…
+
WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM where the format allows us to present the massive content of the Guide in easy-to-index published form. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes size limitations (yep, size matters). We began publishing on Blogspot in early 2008.
+
WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION as a new presence, and enjoying that site. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks
+
WE’RE IN FOLKWORKS with the latest of the “Somewhere Out There” column, published May 1 and available online at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35941/3176. (We had already received over 16 pages of compiled feedback about the current column, before May 9!) We contribute occasional reviews or feature stories to FolkWorks. You can read the work of many good writers there, and you can sign-up for a free FolkWorks e-newsletter, too, all at www.FolkWorks.org
+
Our MYSPACE PAGE has news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show. After a long presence on MySpace with the Guide’s predecessor publication, we had to move on, because that site now accepts only short posts. But it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008. (We don’t update the Myspace site very often, or even check its esoteric, myspace-only email. So please DON’T email us through that site. Myspace “friends” are welcome!) You can find what we have there at www.myspace.com/laacoustic
+
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+
PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

6:15 pm MOLLY'S REVENGE & MOIRA SMILEY at The Thacher School, 5025 Thacher Rd, Ojai 93023; 805-646-4377. They were splendid at the Coffee Gallery Backstage last night. They’ve all performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” and are solid favorites with listeners. This is high energy and splendid musicianship. We defy you to sit still when Molly’s Revenge performs.
+
MOIRA SMILEY (VOCO) has performed in so many places around the world with MOLLY’S REVENGE that the boys (John, Pete, David, and Stuart) say “she is firmly and lovingly wrapped into the show.” Born out of the timeless tradition of Celtic music sessions, MOLLY’S REVENGE is a band with a genuine affection and enthusiasm for the music they play, and it’s evident in all their live and recorded performances. The classic combination of solo instruments including the Highland bagpipes, uilleann pipes, whistles, fiddle, and mandolin against a backdrop of guitar and bouzouki accompaniment, with an occasional rousing chorus song mixed in, guarantees an enjoyable and memorable listening experience. MOIRA SMILEY performs internationally as a traditional singer of Eastern European, Irish and Appalachian song, with and without VOCO. Her writing is a rich weave of searing lyrics, wild and immaculate harmony and an exquisite sense of rhythmic play. She has taken her music from Lincoln Center to UCLA Live, The Knitting Factory to CBGB's, to jazz, world music and folk festivals around the world. More at www.mollysrevenge.com.

As always, more to come, as we (believe it or not) continue to make updates to all the months of 2009 in the “long look ahead” posts.

…So many truly fine shows, so few evenings and weekends to see them. With a new spirit of HOPE in America, why not celebrate by going out for a tunefully good time?

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out: you’ll need 130 pages just to print-out the events for these 13 days!
+
Just check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the paper, either, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
