MANDA MOSHER (aka MANDA) was recorded recently as the musical guest on Craig Ferguson’s “Late Late Show” on CBS network TV.
+
IT AIRS the night of MAY 21 at 12:35 am (that means you set youyr recording device for May 22).
+
Manda, who has performed at the “Folktacular” and various local L.A.-venues, says, “What a tremendous thrilling thing! I’m bringing out the most awesome band for this one: Ido Sasson, Dave Allen, Alex Balderston, and Carl Byron. A huge thank you to Chris Maddalone from the Craig Ferguson show for helping us with this. Once we have the airdate, I’ll be back with that announcement so we can all stay up late to watch and celebrate or set the TiVos.” If you’re in L.A. on Wednesday and would like to attend the Craig Ferguson show, you can get free tickets at http://www.ocatv.com/latelate
+
MANDA is a multiple award-winner, including “Female Singer-Songwriter of the Year” in the L.A. Music Awards. You’re read extensively about her in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and the Acoustic Americana Music News, and PAUL ZOLLO wrote a stellar review of her CD in “American Songwriter” magazine. Might be a good idea to record the Craig Ferguson show Wednesday night (Thursday morning, when you program your machine).

WELCOME!
This weekend brings WONDERFUL festivals to the Los Angeles area! Full descriptions are included in our extensive listings.
+
Okay, beyond that: This is a quick update and we readily admit there are probably dozens of shows we are omitting, owing to having been gone for a few days. Literally hundreds of emails arrived in our absence, and we have found and included what we could from them. But there just isn’t any way we can wade through all of them and add those events in time to let you know for this weekend. As always, special happenings in other parts of the country are here, too (if we knew about them early), to help everyone include live acoustic music with their travel plans.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them, AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

WHERE TO FIND OTHER THINGS WE DO…
+
WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM after a long presence on MySpace, because that site now accepts only short posts. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes limitations. We began posting to Blogspot in early 2008.
+
WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION as a new presence, and enjoying that site. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks
+
WE’RE IN FOLKWORKS with a new edition of Larry’s column, “Somewhere Out There,” and occasional reviews or feature stories. There are many good writers there. You can sign-up for a free FolkWorks e-newsletter, too, all at www.FolkWorks.org
+
Our MYSPACE PAGE has news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show. And it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008. That’s at www.myspace.com/laacoustic
+
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+
PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=
.
Local FESTIVALS:
.
Fri, May 15 (Thu-Sat, May 14-16); a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm “4th EVER LOS ANGELES OLD-TIME SOCIAL” continues with concerts, workshops, parties, jams and a big square dance, in different venues over the three days. Festival organizers say, “May 17 is the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest to top off the weekend!
+
Tonight at 8 pm, the venue is The Velaslavasay Panorama, 1122 West 24th St, L.A. 90007; www.panoramaonview.org, with
SHAUN CROMWELL (www.shauncromwell.com/beta)
TOM SAUBER (solo)
THE BLACKCROWN STRINGBAND (www.myspace.com/blackcrownstringband)
+
SHAUN CROMWELL is a Los Angeles-based singer/writer of eclectic roots-inspired songs. Shaun uses his guitar, banjo, and voice to weave tales of intrigue and epics of sorrow. His stories marked by death, revenge, gluttony, and The Hereafter abound with the occasional nod to the softer sex (by way of a love song, although, someone usually dies in those, too).
+
TOM SAUBER is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who is teaching traditional Southern fiddle. In the 45 years that Tom has devoted to playing traditional music, he has performed with extraordinary musicians in old-time, bluegrass and Cajun music. He is particularly known for his long-time partnerships with Oklahoma fiddler Earl Collins and North Carolina banjo picker Eddie Lowe. He holds a masters degree in folklore and is a performer and teacher in demand at major traditional music festivals and workshops across the country and internationally.
+
THE BLACKCROWN STRINGBAND, although their name may be dark, is a colorful group of musical compatriots coming from both worlds of bluegrass as well as old-time music and meeting somewhere in the middle. The group, originally named THE PILOT LIGHTERS, first appeared at the 2008 “Berkeley Old-Time Convention String Band Contest,” where they won first place. Their musical menu consists of fiddle-driven old-time numbers, twisted up bluegrass standards and plain ol’ straight ahead mountain music. Look for them wherever true Americana is allowed.
+
+
On Sat, May 16, from 2-10 pm, at Farmlab, 1745 N Spring St, Unit 4, 90012; www.farmlab.org, things conclude with

Fri, May 15:
8 pm CHRIS VALENTI, at Genghis Cohen, 740 N Fairfax Av, L.A. 90046; 323-653-0640; www.genghiscohen.com. Comedic singer-songwriter CHRIS VALENTI has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Now, Chris tells us that word of his “Strings of Comedy” shows “has made it to NBC Studios in Burbank and may make it on to late night television. A producer from ‘Last Call with Carson Daly’ contacted me and asked if we would be interested in having our show taped and then featured on their program. Um.... Yeah? If you haven't seen one of these shows yet, what are you waiting for? Look, if you want to keep your hip, underground, in-the-know street cred up to date, you gotta be there before these things go big. I promise you it is a well-spent Friday night. These shows are really very fun. I invite some of the best musical comics I've come across to play their best 15 minutes. There are no chumps performing here. It's always a great time. You can find Highlight Reels from recent shows at www.StringsOfComedy.com.
+
He adds, “I'm shooting a monthly comedy short for Will Ferrell and Judd Apatow's website FunnyOrDie.com. If you haven't seen January thru March yet, check out www.FunnyOrDie.com/ChrisValenti. I have to say, I love them all, but this new one is my personal favorite, hands down.”
+
Chris Valenti is a romantic comedy expert. A gifted songwriter, wry stand up comic, and award-winning filmmaker, Chris allows his vulnerability to guide his writings about the hazards of love and relationships. This playful self-deprecation leaves audiences singing along through their laughter and makes them a little wiser in their own love lives. He appears in the current number one film “17 Again” and is currently making a monthly short film for FunnyOrDie.com.

2-10 pm “4th EVER LOS ANGELES OLD-TIME SOCIAL” concludes today with concerts, workshops, parties, jams and a big square dance, at Farmlab, 1745 N Spring St, Unit 4, 90012; www.farmlab.org. Festival organizers say, “May 17 is the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest to top off the weekend!
+
Things reach a crescendo on this final day of the “OTS,” with:
Workshops for banjo, fiddle, guitar, and dance calling:
Old-Time Fiddle with Amy Hofer
Black Old-Time Fiddle Tunes with David Bragger
Old-Time Back Up Guitar with Chris Berry
Beginning Claw Hammer Banjo with Steve Lewis
Advanced Claw Hammer Banjo with Steve Lewis
Square Dance Calling with Susan Michaels
+
Schedule of events:
+
> 3 pm - Old-Time Fiddle with Amy Hofer: All levels welcome. Bring a fiddle and a recording device and we’ll break down a tune (or two if there’s time). We’ll talk about learning by ear and bowing patterns as we go. Amy Hofer has taught fiddle to individuals and groups for 6 years, including three years of teaching the fiddle section of Oakland’s ever-popular Old-Time Stringband Music Class. Please email mike@triplechickenfoot.com for registration & questions.
+
> 3 pm - Old-Time Back Up Guitar with Chris Berry: This workshop will show you the ins and outs of backing up fiddle tunes on the guitar. We’ll talk about when to change chords (and when not to), some common chord progressions, and play lots of different types of tunes. We’ll also discuss the styles of some of the greats of old-time guitar: Riley Puckett, Roy Harvey, Asa Martin, Ernest Stoneman. Bring a guitar, a capo, a thumbpick or flatpick, and maybe a notebook and/or something to record with (no tab or chord charts — look andlisten). Chris Berry plays guitar for the LA-area old-time/ragtime/jazz/blues/jug conglomeration Sausage Grinder. Please email mike@triplechickenfoot.com for registration & questions.
+
> 3 pm - Beginning Claw Hammer Banjo with Steve Lewis: Have a banjo and are wondering what to do with it? Seen Triple Chicken Foot and want to play banjo like Mike Heinle? This is the workshop to get you started. We’ll be working on the essentials to get you up and running on clawhammer banjo starting from square one—tuning the instrument; basic clawhammer technique; keeping your banjo happy and healthy. You’ll leave knowing those things and playing a tune or two as well! If you already play and just want a refresher, you’re welcome to come, but the focus will really be on the foundation elements of clawhammer style. Limit of 12. Please email mike@triplechickenfoot.com for registration & questions.
+
> 4-6 pm - Square Dance Calling with Susan Michaels: Learn how to call squares for your friends and family. Beginners welcome. Please email mike@triplechickenfoot.com for registration & questions. Or just show up and get your dancing shoes on.
+
> 4:30 pm - Black Old-Time Fiddle Tunes with David Bragger: This workshop is designed to teach old-time fiddle tunes found in the recordings of Southern Black fiddlers. David draws from a pool of eccentric OT fiddlers such as Will Adam, Howard Armstrong, Lonnie Chatmon, John Lusk, etc. The objective: To leave the workshop with the bowing and notes of some wonderful eccentric fiddle tunes. Please bring an audio recording device. David Bragger plays fiddle and mandolin in Sausage Grinder, an old-time/country and blues jugband based in the Los Angeles area. David teaches old-time fiddle, banjo and mandolin to students of all ages and levels. His students have won awards at festivals from Topanga Fiddle Banjo Festival to Galax, Virginia. Most importantly, he shows you how to have a foot-stomping ruckus of a good time! Please email mike@triplechickenfoot.com for registration & questions.
+
> 4:30 pm - Advanced Claw Hammer Banjo with Steve Lewis: If you already play clawhammer style and are looking for more, this is your workshop. We’ll review the essential elements of clawhammer style and then focus on fluently combining them in different ways to create the many rhythmic and melodic variations you hear in good clawhammer playing. I’ll teach two or three tunes, but emphasis will be on learning how to adapt what you already know to playing with others, especially with fiddlers in jam settings. If you want to review/practice your hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and drop-thumbs, come to the beginning workshop and then stay for the advanced session. I’ll have some tunes written out in tablature, but the goal is to develop your ear and technique to play with others without it. We’ll have a fiddler in attendance to practice with. Limit of 12. Please email mike@triplechickenfoot.com for registration & questions.
+
> 6:30-10 pm Square Dance, Kids Dance & Cake Walk: It’s K. BOOGIE & THE BROWNBAGGERS comprised of TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT plus JOE WACK & STEVE LEWIS, to perform for “the Big Social Square Dance,” with callers Susan Michaels & Amy Hofer, plus PIERSON’S PORK PIES. Cake Walk, Cake Baking, signups, contact Katy kttheflowerlady@sbcglobal.net

Sat, May 16; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
2 pm TOPANGA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA plays its 30th anniversary gala concert at The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N Topanga Canyon Bl (midway between Pacific Coast Highway and the 101 Fwy), in Topanga 90290. Info & tix, 310-455-2322; www.theatricum.com.
+
In addition, the show brings a free student performance and open house. It’s a concert of family fare to benefit programming at The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. Conductor Guido Lamell of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by musicians of the Los Angeles and Santa Monica Philharmonic Orchestras, and Theatricum artistic director Ellen Geer weaves theatrical magic into the music with selections from the upcoming Mainstage Repertory Season that includes Julius Caesar and Cymbeline by William Shakespeare, The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekov and The Miser by Moliere. The benefit performance supports the non-profit theater's repertory and education programs that entertain, inspire and educate thousands of Angelenos each year. The concert is in the Theatricum Botaniucum's rustic outdoor amphitheater in Topanga Canyon.
+
Before the TPO concert, a free student performance with scenes, monologues and improvisation will be held in the S. Mark Taper Youth Pavilion. Teachers and actors from Theatricum's Academy of the Classics will be available to answer questions and introduce potential students and parents to Theatricum's high quality classical performing arts education. For over 25 years, the Academy has served thousands of children and teenagers, aged 5-18, throughout Los Angeles.
+
Theatricum's artistic director Ellen Geer says, "We've been blessed with incredible support over the years and we are very happy to welcome the TPO back to the stage. It is a time in this country to rethink what is most important. We can live with less stuff, but not with less imagination or humanity. This music, and the support for our theater that comes with it, helps fill that need."
+
The Topanga Philharmonic Orchestra was formed just over thirty years ago by Roger Bobo and Patricia Tackett as a way to bring classical music to the canyon. An instant success, the TPO was embraced by the community and raised money for Theatricum, the Topanga Children's Coop and other non-profit organizations.
+
Dr. Doug Roy, best known in the canyon for his medical practice, is a recent convert to active support of classical music. Though his son is a cellist with the UC Berkeley Symphony, Roy always thought of himself simply as a music lover. Last year that changed when the TPO concert almost didn't happen, and Dr. Roy became a volunteer event producer.
+
"It took a lot of people a lot of time and energy," he explains. "But, hey, these incredible musicians wanted to play, the trees wanted to hear the music and so did a lot of people. I felt like I could contribute, so I did. And I am thrilled that the concert is happening again this year."
+
The beginnings of the Theatricum Botanicum can be traced to the early 1950s when Will Geer, a victim of the McCarthy era blacklist (before he became known as the beloved Grandpa on TV's "The Waltons") opened a theater for blacklisted actors and folk singers on his property in Topanga. Today the theater is run by his family. The two stages are situated in a natural canyon ravine, where audiences are able to relax and enjoy the wilderness during an afternoon or evening's performance. Unlike most theaters in the Los Angeles area that stage continuous runs of a single play, the Theatricum, using a company of actors, performs each play on a rotating basis. By the end of the summer, when all the plays are up and running, it will be possible to see a performance of each in a single weekend. The critically acclaimed Theatricum Botanicum is a recipient of the Margaret Harford Award - the Los Angeles Critics Circle's highest honor - for "sustained excellence," and Artistic Director Ellen Geer was selected for the LA Weekly 1999 Career Achievement Award.
+
In addition to the five plays in the 2009 Summer Repertory Season (Cymbeline, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Cherry Orchard and The Miser), Theatricum offers a variety of satellite programming such as Family Fundays (Saturday and Sunday morning plays and concerts for kids with Creative PlayGround and Peter Alsop's Kids Koncerts); Botanicum Seedlings: A Development Series for Playwrights (free readings of new plays on select Sundays); a Summer Concert on Father's Day, June 21, featuring traditional Scottish folk music with Old Blind Dogs; and, on Sunday, October 4, a special performance of selections from Theatricum Botanicum's Americana series that integrate poetry, dialogue, music and songs from various periods during the on-going evolution of our nation.
+
The amphitheaters are terraced into the hillside, so audience members are advised to dress casually (warmly for evenings) and bring cushions for bench seating. Picnickers are welcome on the grounds before or after the performances. The Free Open House and Student Performance is 12:30-1:30 pm. The Topanga Philharmonic Concert begins at 2 pm. Tickets for the Topanga Philharmonic Orchestra are $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors with advance purchase, and $20 for adults, $18 for students and seniors at the door. Children under 12 are free.

This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

Sat, May 16; in Ventura:
7 pm KENNY EDWARDS & JULIE CHRISTENSEN play a "two headliner" show at the Duncan House Concert Series in Ventura. Reservations get directions at scottd13@roadrunner.com. Kenny started the Stone Poneys band with Linda Ronstadt, and Julie sang with Leonard Cohen for many years.
+
In 1965, Kenny was a co-founder of The Stone Poneys, along with Linda Ronstadt and Bobby Kimmel, and with them made several albums on Capitol Records, toured, and became well-known in the new American folk-rock movement of the 1960’s. Since then he has collaborated and played with the likes of Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Warren Zevon, and even Ringo Starr. The term “musical legend” is applied far too liberally these days, and those who are truly deserving of such accolades tend to be the least comfortable with embracing them. Kenny Edwards truly is a musical legend. One of the main characters in the American folk-rock movement of the late-sixties and early seventies, audiences soon realize how very familiar they are with the sound of Edwards' voice and his wonderful musicianship More at www.kennyedwards.com
+
Julie, an amazing vocalist, has collaborated with notable artists, including Leonard Cohen (with whom she has toured and recorded for years), Lou Reed, Van Dyke Parks, k.d. lang, Todd Rundgren and Robben Ford. Her past three albums, "Love is Driving" (1997), "Soul Driver" (2000) and "Something Familiar" (2006), have received critical praise. Now, with the upcoming release of "Where the Fireworks Are," she is making her most personal statement thus far. "This stuff is what I was listening to in college." she said. "This recording impelled itself to be made. I grew up with Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, Buffalo Springfield and Laura Nyro. Their songs were poetry and had emotional weight and the wild energy of rock. LA singer-songwriter BRAD COLERICK has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” he’s written a song recorded by the late JOHNNY CASH, and series booker Steve Dulson calls Brad, “One of the most acclaimed opening acts we've ever presented is back as our headliner! After making a couple of recordings in the '80s, Brad Colerick established a successful career creating music for commercials by some of the world’s largest corporations - but not for himself. Four years ago he got serious about his own music again. Brad has since released two CDs, ‘Cottonwood,’ and ‘Lines in the Dirt.’ He blends Americana, folk and country to create smooth, catchy melodies with finely wrought, plainspoken lyrics that find the poetry in everyday language to celebrate the often forgotten moments that make life worth living. He is celebrating the release of his new CD.” More: at www.bradcolerick.com

Sat, May 16; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm BRYAN BOWERS, master of the autoharp, returns to The Fret House, 309 N Citrus, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com. For nearly three decades, Bryan Bowers has been to the autoharp what Earl Scruggs was to the five-string banjo. He presents instrumental virtuosity combined with warmth, eloquence, expression and professionalism. Carrying on the tradition of MOTHER MAYBELLE CARTER and others, Bryan, the premier autoharp player of our time, has taken the instrument to new heights and dimensions. People Magazine wrote, "Bowers is widely regarded as the leading virtuoso on the autoharp... Bowers also has distinct gifts as a singer and songwriter." He takes traditional songs and the songs of other songwriters and makes them his own. He's a great singer and a great guy who makes a world of sound from the autoharp. It’s not the instrument you remember from 3rd grade (if you are old enough to have enjoyed music education when we had it in public school). From the energetic Celtic tune, "St. Anne's Reel", to his own stately love song, "Magnolia," Bryan shows stunning versatility.
+
The Washington Times said, "...This man makes more music from an Autoharp than you can imagine from a 12-string guitar and a harpsichord combined. He has more stage presence and charisma than any stage performer in recent memory." One needs only to go to http://bryanbowers.com to find samples of his great music and to get an idea of the deep body of songs he has put together over the years. As fine as these songs are, this is only half of the story, for to see and hear him live is a supremely satisfying experience. Though he has lived in Seattle for many years, he has retained an easy Southern manner from his Virginia roots. Fond of telling a story or two, he includes a solid dose of humor, with songs like Mark Graham's "Zen Gospel Singing" and Tom Dundee's "Dog," a touchingly humorous song about a fellow getting his first dog. This is a delightful evening. Doors at 7:30. Tix, $15.

8 pm FISHTANK ENSEMBLE at Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City; www.boulevardmusic.com; 310-398-2583. FISHTANK ENSEMBLE, among the headliners at the recent L.A. Djangofest, have performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” They are a delight to experience, with their vast array of instruments, and TttT listeners reveled in their unique eclectic blend of old time Americana flavored Djangostyle music, Romanian folk, Gypsy, Balkan, Flamenco, Klezmer, and originals. FISHTANK ENSEMBLE with DJORDJE STIJEPOVIC are a lively and unusual group of talented musicians mastering their respective instruments - violin, saw, accordion, flamenco guitar, contrabass, percussion and voice. Romanian folk music forms the bulk of the material with a healthy helping of flamenco, Swedish folk music, klezmer, Gypsy jazz, and other folk sources, as well as original songs.
+
“For those in need of having their dervish whirled, Fishtank Ensemble are the rompin', stompin' leaders of cross-pollinated Gypsy music. French fiddler FABRICE MARTINEZ paid dues gigging Europe in a mule-drawn caravan, including stints in Romani villages. EL DOUJE is the master of 21st-century flamenco guitar, while AARON SEEMAN [aka Duckmandu] is the king of punk accordion. Audience eyes tend to focus on URSULA KNUDSON, not only for her virtuosic fiddle, saw playing and a voice that sings in octaves not yet invented, but also for her sensual beauty. The mix includes a Japanese shamisen player and a rock-bottom upright bassist, and we have a young band that is one of the most thrilling live acts on the planet.” - Michael Simmons, LA Weekly. 8:30 pm AM performs an electric show with his full band, at Spaceland, 1717 Silverlake Bl, L.A. 90027. Doors at 8:30 pm, show at 9 pm. Indie crooner AM was named by the LA Weekly as “Best Singer Songwriter of The Year.” His debut album was named by iTunes among the “Best Albums of the Year.’ Now, AM is putting finishing touches on his new album "Future Sons And Daughters" with producer Charles Newman (Magnetic Fields), and tonight, he previews the new songs with his full band. Conceived in Elliot Smith's previous dwelling (now Newman's place of residence) the Tulsa-born, New Orleans-raised, current Echo Park resident found inspiration for his new songs in his own collection of obscure Brazilian music and Italian soundtracks.
+
The promo says, “Fusing simple, intelligent lyrics, undeniable pop sensibilities and sparse, psychedelic groove, ‘Future Sons And Daughters’ combines the classic and the modern with an honesty only a dedicated music fan could produce. [The album] delivers deceptively simple messages on a variety of moral questions, and ultimately wonders ‘what have we left for the ones taking over?’ ‘It's Been So Long,’ a haunting duet, pines on the dangers of resentment and the necessity of mercy while ‘Leavenworth,’ a Carol King-meets-The Beatles style ballad, examines the world of a marriage gone awry in a place where marriage is sacred. ‘Fortunate Family Tree’ conjures up social commentary on the haves and have nots in today's America and ‘Self-Preservation’ critically examines history's pervasive ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality.”
+
AM has been heard on NPR and the iTunes “Indie Spotlight,” and his music has been prominent on TV shows, including “Brothers And Sisters,” “Men In Trees,” “Big Love,” “Kyle XY,” “Greek,” and MTV's “The Hills.” More at www.amsounds.com and www.myspace.com/amsounds and www.youtube.com/amsounds.

Local FESTIVALS:

Sun, May 17; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
9 am-All-day 49th Annual “TOPANGA BANJO AND FIDDLE CONTEST AND FOLK FESTIVAL” at the beautiful Paramount Ranch near Agoura Hills, in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area. This is a wonderful event, the best one-day festival anywhere, with multiple stages of scheduled acts, prestigious contests, and all-day jams under the oak tress and on the wooden boardwalks of the buildings in the movie-set old west town.
+
This is always a splendid event. Plus, your editor is emcee on the Railroad Stage all day, so be sure you drop by, catch the wonderful music, and make a point to say “howdy.”
+
In addition to the professional musicians who will dazzle you with their scheduled performances, there are the legendary nonstop jams and the contests. Some clue of what to expect in the latter is provided by the multiple-award-winning band, MURPHY’S FLAW, who are competing here again this year. They tell us, “It all happens again at 9 am Sunday at the beautiful, sun-baked Paramount Ranch near Agoura Hills. Gaggles of fresh-faced, inordinately talented kids will step to the microphone at the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest, brows furrowed in concentration, giving the audience a jolt of raw musical talent and glimpses of the extraordinary musicians they may become. We hate them. We, by contrast, trudge to the stage, perform, slink back to our lawn chairs, knowing we'll get hammered in the results by some bands that feature Cute Kids. They also tend to play better than we do. But that's not the point. The point is there needs to be a Doddering Old Inept Bluegrass Band category, and you can't get into it until your acne has cleared up. Failing that, the Flaw is resigned to -- nay, embraces -- its probable third-place finish. In fact, we're committed to extending our third-place streak by another year. We're going for the Guiness, folks!** We're Contestant No. 39, so come and cheer or merely observe the wreckage, sigh, and move on.” As for their asterisks: “*ingrown whiskers = no problem; **both the record book and the ale.”
+
Info, schedule, map of the festival, more, at www.topangabanjofiddle.org. Tix available at the gate on the day of the event. $12 for ages 18-64, $7 for ages 10-17 or over age 65. No charge for children under age 10. Free parking.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out: you’ll need 130 pages just to print-out the events for these 13 days!
+
Just check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the paper, either, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
