Two TV airdates set:
.
FIRST,
Thu, May 21 (after midnight, May 22) on TV:
12:30-1:45 am MANDA MOSHER (aka MANDA) performs as the musical guest on Craig Ferguson’s “Late Late Show” on CBS network TV. Set your recording device for May 22. (BTW, Manda and her band will be touring and playing in NYC all week, including May 21 at the famous Rockwood Music Hall!)
+
Manda, who has performed at the “Folktacular” and various local L.A.-venues, says, “What a tremendous thrilling thing! I’m bringing out the most awesome band for this one: Ido Sasson, Dave Allen, Alex Balderston, and Carl Byron. A huge thank you to Chris Maddalone from the Craig Ferguson show for helping us with this. Stay up late to watch and celebrate or set the TiVos.”
+
MANDA is a multiple award-winner, including “Female Singer-Songwriter of the Year” in the L.A. Music Awards. You’re read extensively about her in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and the Acoustic Americana Music News, and PAUL ZOLLO wrote a stellar review of her CD in “American Songwriter” magazine. Might be a good idea to record the show just so you’ll have the breakthrough performance of a rising star.

WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM after a long presence on MySpace, because that site now accepts only short posts. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes limitations. We began posting to Blogspot in early 2008.

WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION as a new presence, and enjoying that site. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks

Our MYSPACE PAGE has news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show. And it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008. (We don’t update it often.) That’s at www.myspace.com/laacoustic

PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

7 pm THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND with THE DOOBIE BROTHERS at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Ave in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; http://greektheatrela.com. Classic rock legends, The Allman Brothers Band and The Doobie Brothers co-headline the second of two consecutive nights at the Greek Theatre. Event info, http://greektheatrela.com/calendar/event_info.asp?ID=1551
+
THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, celebrating their 40th anniversary, are embarking on a US tour billed as “40 Years of Highs & Lows.” Honorees of Billboard magazine’s “Legends of Live” award this past November, the band lived up to that title during a recent show at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The New York Times said of that performance, “The first half of the show was an affirmation of bedrock values, with some of the sturdiest songs from the Duane Allman era: “Statesboro Blues,” “Revival,” “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin,’ ” “Done Somebody Wrong.” Gregg Allman was in strong vocal form, and the rhythm section (also with the bassist Oteil Burbridge and the percussionist Marc Quiñones) chugged along expertly. The set kept gathering steam as it went on…” More at www.allmanbrothers.com
+
THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, as one of the most popular Californian pop-rock bands of the '70s, have evolved from a mellow, post-hippie boogie band to a slick, soul-inflected pop band. Along the way, the band has accumulated multiple Grammy awards, numerous gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums in the U.S. Their string of radio hits include, "Listen to the Music," "Black Water," "China Grove,” “Long Train Running” and Takin’ It To The Streets.” In between tour dates, the Doobie Brothers can be found in the studio mixing their upcoming full-length album. Tix, $50, $65, $75, $100, $140.

Wed, May 20, May 20; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm ALEX DePUE & MIGUEL DeHOYOS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Alex DePue is one of the most innovative violinists/fiddlers of our day. You can expect a jaw-dropping demonstration including multiple styles of violining. Having performed at NYC's Carnegie Hall by the age of 14, Alex went on to win numerous competitions, including the National Fiddling Championship in Winfield, KS in 1999 and again in 2005. Alex was employed as Musical Director for Capitol recording artist Chris Cagle (Country), from 2000 to 2006 and recently completed a lengthy world tour with legendary rock guitarist Steve Vai. Find out more at www.myspace.com/alexdepue or www.vai.com for news of their live DVD releases and recordings. Type "alex depue" at www.youtube.com for examples of live performances. Alex’s Myspace page has had over a million hits!
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, about a show Alex did at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, “Alex DePue is a very well known fiddle player who is in a big rock band. It was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience to see a full fledged ‘fiddle extravaganza.’ There is no other way to describe it. ....way too big to be in a 49 seat bistro. However, he had a great time and he asked to come back. (just like every other big time act who gets hooked up with The Coffee Gallery Backstage). Alex is, obviously, classically trained. He does not ‘just’ play but puts on a thorough show. He has a sweet puckish sense of humor and is good looking. This is a ‘class’ act. Not a person in the room stayed in his, or her, seat the end of the last song. A 100% standing ovation. The audience would not let him off the stage and he played for about another hour. He was mobbed at the CD table after he finally got off stage. [He’s] the nicest person you can imagine, with even a good sense of humor off stage. I am convinced I will never have a finer solo violinist/fiddler on my stage. This is a super winner. This raises the bar. A Pick. Top o' the heap.”
+
Alex performs with special guest Miguel De Hoyos (Guitarrista Mexicano). Miguel is, without doubt, one of most reknowned and talented guitarists in Mexico. His musical elegance and virtuosity, whether with others or in solo performances, continue to captivate audiences of all ages in Mexico, United States and Europe. Distinguished for his eclectic performances, and throughout the course of one performance, he often delivers a piece of XVI century Baroque music, Spaniard music, Mexican music, South American music, European music and some killer acoustic rock and roll. These many different genres of music include original arrangements, all executed with such mastery and skill you will believe the music was originally written for solo guitar. Tix: $20 (a steal).

Wed, May 20:
8:30 pm “GODDESS WITHIN” NITE with ESZA KAYE, KATHLEEN SMITH, & LEAH WALTON, at Versai (aka Music Club Shadow at Versai), 351 N Fairfax Av, L.A. 90048; www.mogul.am; reservations, 323-428-8471; 323-864-5184.
+
ESZA KAYE, at 8:30 pm, is a singer/songwriter from New York, Moscow, London and L.A. She is of Transylvanian and Celtic descent. Her debut album, "Confessor," is the debut of her new sound, “aristo-goth.” This isn’t folk music. Esza channels what she calls “the dark feminine -- seductive energy with the promise of light.” It’s lyrically-driven, melodic music with a blend of organic and electric grooves/production. Producers say, “Esza's music strips away self-deception, and ushers in epiphany in such a way that the lessons manage to be both inconspicuous and eternal." Esza reached #43 on the Billboard Dance Chart with her hit dance single, "Walking Down Madison." Her first EP, "I Wanna Die Loving You", was recorded in London with producer Paul Freegard (Depeche Mode, Martin Gore), and her first album "Confessor" was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Randy Emata. Esza is currently working on her third studio album and playing live around town at venues such as the Key Club and House of Blues.
+
KATHLEEN SMITH, at 9:30 pm, switched from theater studies at USC to pursue songwriting. There, she found her calling, and has never looked back. With songs that Billboard online called "emotionally charged," a debut EP that has received airplay on KCRW, a documentary score airing on CurrenTV, and a sound that melds Norah Jones, Cat Stevens and fairy princess, Kathleen enchants audiences with her unique message of love and fun through music, and reminds everyone to "find something you love and run with it!"
+
LEAH WALTON (aka Leahpatra Knitwear), at 10:30 pm, is an L.A.-based knitwear designer, design teacher and singer. She loves to produce her own original music, sing and design her own fashion combining the two “into a crowd screaming performance” that she delivers with her two Otis College of Art students and models Becca Bordeaux and Liberty La Belle. Producers tell us, “This is a very sexy, burlesque style fashion show that is a motivational performance about Leah`s inspiration for her couture knitwear designs. Custom couture designs available per request.”
+
Open for dinner at 7 pm; those not there by 9 pm lose priority seating. Tonight’s show presented by Y3K GM Entertainment. Venue offers full dinner menu, lighter fare, and full bar. Free parking, down the block on the same side of the street; $10 cover + 2 drink minimum.

“EUROPEAN WORLD OF BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL 2009” in Voorthuizen, the Netherlands; www.ewob.eu
+
Band applications for EWOB 2009 have closed, and the Program Committee is spending the holidays listening to all the demos and making difficult selection decisions. In late January, they'll announce the EWOB 2009 Festival program. This will be the 12th European World of Bluegrass Festival held in Voorthuizen, the Netherlands, under the auspices of the European World of Bluegrass
+
In 2008, Strictly Country Records released the double CD, “10 YEARS OF EUROPEAN WORLD OF BLUEGRASS.” It shot straight to #1 on the Folk Radio charts in the USA and Canada. As the label justifiably boasts, “The music world got its first taste of European bluegrass - and they love it.” The album includes the top European bluegrass bands, plus 15 artists from the US & Canada, on two hours of live performance recordings. It includes KATE MacKENZIE, CLAIRE LYNCH, COUNTRY GENTLEMEN, LAURIE LEWIS, JOHN REISCHMAN, CHRIS & SALLY JONES, THE CHAPMANS, and more.
+
A fine gift for any bluegrass lover, it’s “a banjo-laden ramble through the far corners of Europe, along with some of your favorite American touring artists.” "The language of Bluegrass transcends borders on this collection. For your introduction into the European World of Bluegrass, this is the place to start your world tour!" ~ Folkwax, USA

Thu, May 21; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
THE BELIEVERS, Seattle favorites, celebrate their new album "Lucky You" with the first of several dates in Los Angeles, tonight at the House of Blues Sunset Strip, 8430 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood; 323-848-5100.
+
They’re a band of folk types, with an edge and fun original songs. Americana works as a description. Their own moniker country soul works, too. Either way, THE BELIEVERS combine elements of old timey folk, country, gospel, and rock to create something that’s their own. Since the release of their debut CD, “ROW (baptism by fire),” heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” THE BELIEVERS have been embraced by musicians and music fans alike: "The Believers sing with heart and conviction" - Jim Lauderdale. "Spellbinding" - Austin Americana.com. The Believers speak to everyone. This is an act other entertainers come to see.
+
L.A. dates are: May 21, House of Blues Sunset Strip; May 23, Crane's Tavern, Hollywood; May 28, Coffee Gallery Backstage, Altadena; May 31, Grand Ole Echo, Echo Park. Known as a band that's rapidly converting listeners through widespread word-of-mouth for their effortless blend of alt-country and indie-rock, Seattle's THE BELIEVERS are touring their new CD demonstrating, as they playfully put it, a "rock band with a country problem," pairing 70s-style Fleetwood Mac hooks with a heavy undercurrent reminiscent of Heart and Concrete Blonde. Months before its release, “Lucky You” already had a whirlwind radio presence around the country, leaving this independent act flooded with preorder requests.
+
The album's title track, "Lucky You," is a sexy stomp, evoking a modern update of X, another punky group who flirted with country and boy-girl vocal harmonies over a four-on-the-floor rock groove. The album includes singer-songwriter duo Craig Aspen and Cyd Frazzini tackling Hurricane Katrina's aftermath with the barn-burning twang of "Ring Ring Ring" and the country blues "Higher Ground." The album features musical contributions from Band of Horses' Bill Reynolds, and was produced by Aspen, Frazzini, drummer Stevie Adamek, and mastered by producer Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams). Ther band’s live shows have been described by Rock and Reel Magazine as "what Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three might have sounded like if they'd jammed with The White Stripes." More at www.thebeleiversUSA.com and www.myspace.com/thebelieversmusic. Check with venue for show time and cover.

Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

Fri-Mon, May 22-25; in Seattle:
38th annual “NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL” at Seattle Center (the former World’s Fair site) in Seattle, WA. The vast expanses of venues and workshops come alive for an extended Memorial Day Weekend with singing, playing, dancing and so much more. As NWFL Director Robert Townsend asks, “What is life without the arts - and without a little play?” It’s not uncommon for this festival to operate 26 stages simultaneously, plus half-a-dozen or more workshops, plus a dozen appreciable jams. You must go, at least once. More at www.nwfolklife.org
+
There is so much to this festival that it’s almost incomprehensible. This year’s “Cultural Focus” is the “A-Y-P Exposition Centennial.” In 1909, Seattle hosted its first world's fair, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. Known as "the A-Y-P," that historic event celebrated the culture, industry, and innovation of the Pacific Northwest at the beginning of the twentieth century. It drew four million visitors to the young city of Seattle. A hundred years later, the Northwest Folklife Festival celebrates the A-Y-P, marking that event “by presenting [cultural] communities that called Seattle home in the early 1900s as well as groups that were presented at the A-Y-P: Scandinavians, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiians, Filipinos, and Alaska Natives.”
+
NWFL always has many maritime music events. This year, even more, off-site, happen in conjunction with the festival. For a run-down on all those, contact Alice at walice1@qwest.net
+
The festival is free, and requests donations as you enter the site at the massive Seattle Center fairgrounds. One event, away from that site, is a fundraiser for NWFL and requires an admission. It’s on Sat, May 23, at 8 pm, at Conor Byrne Pub in Ballard (NW Seattle). It’s a “BOB DYLAN TRIBUTE,” and costs $10. A portion of the proceeds benefit Northwest Folklife.

57th annual “FLORIDA FOLK FESTIVAL” is a three-day celebration of the music, dance, stories, crafts and food, at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, 11016 Lillian Saunders Dr, White Springs, Florida 32096; www.floridastateparks.org/folkfest.
+
This year’s Festival theme is Florida's Nature Coast. More than 300 performances give voice and meaning to Florida’s heritage. Performers include MARY Z. COX, BILLY DEAN, DOYLE DYKES, JACK WILLIAMS, SPANKY & OUR GANG, THE BURNS SISTERS, FRANK THOMAS, JEANIE FITCHEN, BEN PRESTAGE, GRANT LIVINGSTON, SAIL AMERICANA, BLUEGRASS ENSEMBLE, NEW RIVER BLUEGRASS BAND, and many more. From Irish fiddle tunes and kumquat pie to the wide varieties of music brought by immigrants, the state’s cultural heritage reflects the lives of generations of Florida families and communities. This year’s Festival “proudly takes a step back to festival tradition and Florida performers.” Audiences are sure to be charmed this year when Grammy Award winner BILLY DEAN shares top musical billing this year with folk music legends SPANKY & OUR GANG, master guitarist DOYLE DYKES, one-man-band blues maestro BEN PRESTAGE, and Florida Folk Heritage Award Winner JEANIE FITCHEN.
+
Three-time Florida State Banjo Champ / three-time Florida State Mountain Dulcimer Champ / “Tied to the Tracks” performing guest MARY Z. COX performs all three days with her guitarist husband BOB COX. At the Florida Folk Festival you can sit with the masters who keep cultural traditions alive. In jam sessions, demonstrations and workshops, try your own hand at playing mandolin, telling stories, or making a pine needle basket. Learn how to collect your family’s history, call a square dance, or the importance of native plant and animal species. Take a shopping excursion and visit with Florida’s traditional and contemporary craftsmen. Then dine on collard greens and cornbread, chicken pilau and hoppin’ john, shrimp gumbo, barbecue, curries, gyros and lime fizzes. As the sun sets, settle in for concerts by moonlight or dance the night away at the Heritage Stage. At the end of the day you’ll have discovered new corners of the state from the people who call Florida home. Festival sponsors say, “Join us along the Suwannee River at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, home of the Florida Folk Festival for 57 years.” The Festival is presented under the auspices of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Recreation and Parks.

“EUROPEAN WORLD OF BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL 2009” in Voorthuizen, the Netherlands; www.ewob.eu

Band applications for EWOB 2009 have closed, and the Program Committee is spending the holidays listening to all the demos and making difficult selection decisions. +
In 2008, Strictly Country Records released the double CD, “10 YEARS OF EUROPEAN WORLD OF BLUEGRASS.” It shot straight to #1 on the Folk Radio charts in the USA and Canada.

7:30 pm CHRIS VALENTI, at The Comedy Store, 8433 Sunset Bl, Hollywood. He has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Now, Chris tells us that word of his “Strings of Comedy” shows “has made it to NBC Studios in Burbank and may make it on to late night television. He says, “A producer from ‘Last Call with Carson Daly’ contacted me and asked if we would be interested in having our show taped and then featured on their program. Um.... Yeah? If you haven't seen one of these shows yet, what are you waiting for? Look, if you want to keep your hip, underground, in-the-know street cred up to date, you gotta be there before these things go big. I promise you it is a well-spent Friday night. These shows are really very fun. I invite some of the best musical comics I've come across to play their best 15 minutes. There are no chumps performing here. It's always a great time. You can find Highlight Reels from recent shows at www.StringsOfComedy.com.
+
He adds, “I'm shooting a monthly comedy short for Will Ferrell and Judd Apatow's website FunnyOrDie.com. If you haven't seen January thru March yet, check out www.FunnyOrDie.com/ChrisValenti. I have to say, I love them all, but this new one is my personal favorite, hands down.”
+
Chris Valenti is a romantic comedy expert. A gifted songwriter, wry stand up comic, and award-winning filmmaker, Chris allows his vulnerability to guide his writings about the hazards of love and relationships. This playful self-deprecation leaves audiences singing along through their laughter and makes them a little wiser in their own love lives. He appears in the current number one film “17 Again” and is currently making a monthly short film for FunnyOrDie.com.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out: you’ll need 130 pages just to print-out the events for these 13 days!
+
Just check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the paper, either, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
