LIVE OAK and HUCK FINN -- BIG and beloved festivals are this weekend, and they begin Friday. Plus, “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA” returns Sunday, on numerous stages, all FREE, as part of the global “FETE DE LA MUSIQUE” that originated in France. Sorta like a stay-close-to-home one-day festival for the budget-conscious and irreconcilably broke. Of course, some folks are crazy enough to catch a day or two at one big festival, then a day or two at another. If you don’t feel like that well-worth-it road trip to the hills north of Santa Barbara or the Mojave River near Victorville, there are daytime and evening shows all around the L.A. area, including the all-day Pasadena event.
+
And remember what ELSE is coming: there’s the wonderful “THREE GIRLS AND THEIR BUDDY” concert with EMMYLOU HARRIS, PATTY GRIFFIN, SHAWN COLVIN, & BUDDY MILLER at the Greek Theatre, Wed, Jun 24 (and you can still WIN FREE TICKETS from the Acoustic Americana Music Guide, through this Friday, Jun 1;; details at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2009/06/win-free-tix-to-see-emmylou-harris.html or at http://community.nodepression.com/profiles/blogs/win-free-tix-to-see-emmylou

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.

GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! WHERE TO FIND WHAT WE DO…

WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM where the format allows us to present the massive content of the Guide in easy-to-index published form. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes size limitations (yep, size matters). We began publishing on Blogspot in early 2008.

WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION as a new presence, and enjoying that site. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks

WE’RE IN FOLKWORKS with the latest edition of the “Somewhere Out There” column, available online at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35941/3176. (We have received MANY compiled pages of feedback about the current column, so feel free to send us yours!) We contribute occasional reviews or feature stories to FolkWorks. Our MYSPACE PAGE has news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show. After a long presence on MySpace with the Guide’s predecessor publication, we had to move on, because that site now accepts only short posts. But it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008. (We don’t update the Myspace site very often, or even check its esoteric, myspace-only email. So please DON’T email us through that site. Myspace “friends” are welcome!) You can find what we have there at www.myspace.com/laacoustic

PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

“SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” picks for Friday include a film with on-camera music performances, opening citywide today at the Laemmle theatres; it’s “Irene in Time,” which we review in a special “film opening” section just below the “Show-of-the-Week” listings. Then, our “picks” enthusiastically include the opening-day lineups at both the Live Oak Music Festival, north of Santa Barbara, and the Huck Finn Jubilee, near Victorville. Both are award-winning festivals, and both have Friday lineups that are so good that if you can attend either festival only on Saturday and Sunday, you are really missing something! Apart from the festivals, the free show with Ken O’Malley and the Browne Sisters, in Palmdale at 7 pm, is more than worth a drive to the desert. Merlin Snider returns, bringing a CD release show and his all-star band of Pretty Good Acquaintances to Altadena at 8 pm. Tonight’s house concert in Altadena with top Western female artist and award-winning songwriter Juni Fisher and the formidable Ray Doyle will be splendid. And Lauren Adams’ monthly “Americana Music Circle” in NoHo has a fine lineup at 8 pm (see our feature write-up on that one).

FILM OPENING TODAY:
.
Fri, Jun 19; film opening; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
“IRENE IN TIME,” the new HENRY JAGLOM film, prominently features, on-camera, original music and song performances by multi-platinum songwriter HARRIET SCHOCK and her band, with some on camera vocals by the film’s star, TANNA FREDERICK. It opens today in L.A., citywide, at the Laemmle Theatres. Harriet Schock is attending with a group tonight at the Laemmle Sunset 5, for the 7:20 pm show, if you would like to try to meet her. Your editor has seen the film, and concurs with film critics that it is wonderful (see review, below). It opens in NYC on September 23.
+
Here are the early reviews of “Irene In Time:”
+
Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide: “This film explores the relationship between a young adult daughter and her departed father. Often charming, it is a tale with broad overtones and themes for our broken society. The topic seems inescapably uncomfortable, but not in Jaglom’s hands and those of his cast. Yes, too many children in our society are raised by one parent with the other parent present in a limited role that sometimes seems larger-then life as much as it is ultimately unfulfilling. The film neither runs from that nor trivializes it. Nor does it exploit it.
+
“The film could have been a downer, but it most certainly is not. Jaglom trusts his actors to find the right dialog when it’s better than the script, something that Tanna Frederick, his star, points-out that’s been Jaglom’s trademark since he cast Jack Nicholson and Tuesday Weld years ago. Frederick’s comment and her character are wholly believable, and never more so than in her many tight close-ups, where her expressions are masterfully understated and in the picture-worth-a-thousand-words league.
+
“If some moments seem saccharine, those pass in the context of the story and the style of storytelling, where the full backdrop of life is on display, with all its joys and disappointments, and ultimately, the comfort of a happier time, longed for. Aside from its drop-you-right-in, unusually spare opening, devoid of most of what we have come to expect from a film’s first two or three minutes, the editing is just right, with no cuts called for, at all.
+
“Multi-platinum songwriter Harriet Schock’s music and lyrics are a full-fledged character throughout, as complete songs are used, and the visual images mix appealing images of sailing and beach waves with in-studio performances. The use of the live band shots give Jaglom a set of tools that reach beyond the usual filmmaker’s hard-cut or lap-dissolve to transition from one scene to another. And to the extent the songs create interludes, they never take you away from wanting to see what will happen next. Mostly, the songs illuminate the storyline and broaden both the appeal and the impact. (Though we would not include Schock’s “Starbuck’s” song in that, which felt a bit like product placement.)
+
“The acting is exactly right, across the board, with standout performances from Kelly DeSarla, veterans Victoria Tennant and Karen Black, Jaglom’s newcomer daughter Sabrina and young son Simon, and consummate pro Andrea Marcovicci, who ad libs the film’s best line. See it for the story and the splendid use of the music. Both will stay with you.”.
+
Jim Svejda, KUSC, L.A. - “Driven by Tanna Frederick’s astonishing performance, ‘Irene In Time’ proves once again that Henry Jaglom is America’s most daring, consistently provocative and stubbornly individual director.”
+
Betty Jo Tucker, ReelTalk - “Part of the charm of ‘Irene in Time’ comes from the film’s lovely music. ‘When I hired Harriet Schock to write the music,’ Jaglom reports, ‘telling her what Irene in Time was about, she -- stunned -- immediately said to me: ‘I married my father.’ And right there in my living room, she sat down at the piano and played a song for me that she had written, ‘I’m Dancing with My Father.’ Tanna sang it together with Harriet’s band in a club one night and suddenly all the pieces of what I was looking for seemed to fall into place.’”
+
Dan Kimpel, Music Connection Magazine - “Prolific gold and platinum Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Harriet Schock is lending her narrative talents to the latest film directed by cinematic auteur Henry Jaglom. The feature, titled Irene in Time, is centered on the complex relationships between fathers and daughters, and the potential lifelong consequences of these complex bonds. Schock’s contributions include four songs she performs on screen in conjunction with the film’s star, Tanna Frederick.
+
“The project evolved when Frederick joined the songstress and her band onstage at the venerable Los Angeles listening room Genghis Cohen. When Henry Jaglom attended the performance, he was inspired to create a film utilizing the songs as commentary. In addition to the quartet of on screen performances, Schock’s song ‘Dancing With My Father’ from her ‘American Romance’ CD is reprised, and the songwriter also appears on camera in multiple scenes.
+
“Schock is currently completing production on her seventh studio release, ‘Breakdown on Memory Lane,’ recorded with a stellar cast of Nashville musicians.”

Butler's owners, Pam & David Logan, are long-time lovers and supporters of acoustic music. Indeed, Pam is an accomplished musician and a member of the Browne Sisters.
They serve food and drink, featuring fresh-roasted coffe, in a rich, comfortable setting.
Butler's music guy, Kevin Burton Smith, has had great success in attracting excellent acoustic music to Butler's, and with DesertSong helping, Butler's is destined to elevate the musical culture of the Antelope Valley. Featured artists are precede and followed by an Open Mic.
+
About Ken O'Malley, from “The Irish Herald,” written by Dave Soyars in May, 2002:
“Though Ken O'Malley does a fine job of Bob Dylan's 'Tangled Up in Blue' or Van Morrison's 'Into the Mystic' when called upon, he's much more than a mere pub singer. Blessed with a stunningly rich Irish tenor that can easily fill a room without the aid of amplification, he's also a fine mandolin player and guitarist with a large repertoire of traditional and contemporary Irish songs ... The star is O'Malley's voice, however, which effortlessly spans the range from sentimental ballads to aggressive Irish folk/rock and everywhere in between.” More at www.kenomalley.com

+
The new Merlin Snider CD, "Right Here," is among the Top Albums on the Folk Radio Airplay Charts for May 2009. That’s not all: it shares the No. 35 spot with Pete Seeger and Ramblin' JackElliot! (www.folkradio.org).
+
He’s back again, the singer-songwriter in the great Americana story-telling tradition. His acoustic music cuts across all sorts of Americana genres, with songs that display witty, probing lyrics, genuine soul, and wry humor that inspired country/folk singer Jo Anne Montana to say, he is “my newest favorite folksinger – a Woody Guthrie for the 21st century.”
+
Merlin’s long-awaited second album, “Right Here,” has just been released and will be making its Los Angeles debut tonight. Folkworks.org heralded “Right Here” as “a ‘must have’ for connoisseurs of the singer-songwriter, folk genre.” The CD is already finding a home on the playlists of Americana/Folk DJs across the country, from Santa Cruz to Teaneck, New Jersey, and is generating unmitigated enthusiasm. “I predict success for this eclectic, swingy, and innovative album” – Larry Hillberg, host, Back Roads, KVRM.
+
Steve Clarke, host of “Acoustic Planet” on Erin Radio says, “This album is a comfortable friend to have in my CD player.” Wynn Allen, former host of “Folk Music Tonight” and Club 47 (Cambridge, MA) says, “Out of sight…well worth waiting for!” No stranger to the Coffee Gallery Backstage, Merlin Snyder has played numerous sold out shows at the venue over the past decade.
+
Merlin returns with his band of PRETTY GOOD ACQUAINTANCES: mandolin virtuoso TOM CORBETT (Tom has toured with John McEuen, and Robin & Linda Williams); MARK INDICTOR on fiddle (Border Radio; Hot Lips and Fingertips); LARRY ZACK on snare and percussion (formerly with Jackson Browne); KLAUS EBERT on bass; and DEBORAH SNIDER on backup vocals. Merlin and the band serve-up a fresh stew of folk-blues, western swing, alternative country and folk-rock. In her review of the Ventura County debut of "Right Here," Ann Howitt wrote in the Bard Chord, “If you get a chance to see Merlin and his band perform around town, don’t miss it. It’s sure to be a good show, and you never know what he’ll pull out of the hat.” Reservations recommended. Tix, $15.

VERTIGO ROAD Beginning in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains in Fort Collins, Colorado, KIM KOPP and DAWNIA DRESSER (formerly Carlson), packed up the guitars and drove over a thousand miles to California to sing, write and record as Vertigo Road, a name to reflect the dizzy and winding path that continues to define their musical journey. Their music is described as simply refreshing and powerful. They are moving musical storytellers and "creative soul-mates", whose intense vocal harmonies flow effortlessly around one another taking audiences on a winding musical journey through their relationships, their revelry and, ultimately, their unwavering sense of spirit. In the words of Music Connection Magazine, "Some of the tightest dual harmonies we've heard in quite a while come from this pair."
+
KEVIN KELLY was born on Vincent Van Gough's birthday, and he calls himself "The Great Legendary Unknown" rocking troubadour. Others call him a “cross between Elvis, Bruce, Tom Waits, Neil Diamond.” Host Lauren Adams calls him “A relentlessly prolific songwriter-singer in the folk-rock tradition.” his musical journey began in a 6 by 12 room In Greenwich Village when the nerves on his hand were severed. He played the streets, subways, the Bleecker Street scene, and wound-up at CBGB's fronting his band, "The Hooligans." He has two albums somewhere out there in cyberland, "Down in Tompkins Square Park," and the critically-acclaimed "Lost in the Cracks of the Modern World" (5-carrot BluesBunny rating). His protest song "Noble Cause," inspired by antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan, was featured on the "United States of Conciousness" album & got radio play in NYC. Coming west, he arrived "In LA Without A Car" as one of his songs expressed, to his later song "Car World." He's evolved at the Pig 'N Whistle, The Whisky, the Rainbow Room, Knitting Factory, and on other local stages. Lauren says, “As a performer, he's intense, funny, cute, charming, mad, and he will knock you dead and bury you in his backyard. You won't forget he came to the dance. A review just came in off the wire: ‘I've never seen anything like him,’ said - Kevin Kelly, on himself.” More at www.kevinkellyshow.com

BILL MUMY is a multi-talented, prolific artist who entered the arena of professional entertainment at the age of five. He has worked on over 400 TV shows and is best known by fans around the world for his role as boy astronaut "Will Robinson" on the ‘60s series "Lost in Space." From 1993 through ‘98, he played the mystical "Lennier" in the sci-fi series "Babylon 5." Bill is half of the infamous novelty rock recording and short film making duo, "Barnes and Barnes." Best known for the demented song and film "Fish Heads," Barnes and Barnes have done nine albums and a feature-length video. “Rolling Stone” magazine named “Fish Heads” # 57 of the all-time greatest rock videos ever created. Their latest CD is "Yeah: The Essential Barnes & Barnes" (2000) on Oglio Records. And Bill has eight solo CDs, “Circular” (2008), “The Landlord or the Guest” (2007), “With Big Ideas” (2006), “Ghosts” (2003), “After Dreams Come True” (2001), “Pandora's Box” (2000), “In The Current” (1999), and his first, 1997s “Dying To Be Heard.” Bill's has produced three albums for children, "Kiss My Boo Boo" (Infinite Visons), “The Dinosaur Album,” and “Yogi Bear and Friends: This Land is Your Land” (Kid Rhino). He has worked with the band "America" off and on for over 20 years, composing, producing and performing. As a songwriter, Bill has supplied songs to America, David and Shaun Cassidy, to jazz artists including Sea Wind, and to the legendary Rosemary Clooney. Bill has collaborated with hit songwriter and Broadway composer Paul Gordon for over 30 years on many projects for television, stage and screen.
+
DALE La DUKE had “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” in 2006, with his original “The Lone Ranger,” and that song went on to be a 2008 nominee for “Song of the Year” in the L.A. Music Awards. Dale was born in Grosse Pointe Michigan, began singing in church choirs when he was 8 years old, was principle soloist and president of his high school choir, and a trumpet player in the high school band before going on to sing with the Michigan State Honors Choir and the Michigan State Fair Choir. He taught himself guitar and piano. (Now he is in demand as a guitar teacher.) After years of working in Detroit factories, culminating in 13 months as a “large press operator” at a Chrysler stamping plant, he ran away to Yosemite National Park, leaving all of his hard earned possessions behind. He stayed in the mountains for a year and a half. After a brief return home, where he founded the popular band “Triad,” he soon left Michigan again, and determined to observe humanity at all levels and to work on his writing, spent several years traveling around the country as an itinerant street peddler, finally settling in Los Angeles, where he has been a songwriting member of several successful projects, including FIVE WHEEL DRIVE and KAEDMON.
+
With FIVE WHEEL DRIVE -- one of five finalists (and the only country band) in Yahoo’s “Best Unsigned Band” contest in 2000, and the only group to have their songs in 6 of the top 10 slots in the country division of MP3.com that same year -- Dale was flown to the red carpet awards show at Studio 54 in Manhattan that featured performances by David Bowie, Issac Hayes, Alanis Morrisette, and many others. The group recorded two demos for Warner Bros. Nashville before disbanding.
+
Dale is principal writer on the popular children’s CD, "My Very Own Music," a wonderful collection predicted to go Gold this year (www.myveryownmusic.com). After many years of unsuccessfully searching for a simple, step-by-step method to teach piano and music theory, he finally wrote his own “Music Theory for the Theory Challenged,” soon to be made into an instructional DVD. Dale’s performances can be seen and heard at www.kaedmon.com and www.fivewheeldrive.com. He brings joy to any music lineup fortunate enough to book him.
+
Performing host LAUREN ADAMS has played live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Music critics love her CDs: "One listen and I was hooked. Superb, intelligent, thought-provoking songs. Real songs for real people wrapped in melodies that, promise to capture, inspire and pull the listener in again and again. Songwriters of Lauren Adams' level are few and far between. - LAURIE JOULIE, Take Back Country Magazine (Jan 14, 2008). "Lauren Adams has A CD here that is infectious, the lyrics and sweet melodies along with some sweet slide work make you want to keep listening, a very well done recording. " - Jim Moulton, Country Stars Online (Sep 10, 2008).

+
For ten years, Raul Reynoso was the lead member of the "Thunder Mountain Boys" and "The Rhythm Brothers" at Disneyland. His incredible instrumental and vocal talent has made him one of California's most sought-after musicians and performers. Raul is a two-time Western Regional Flatpicking champion and he was twice nominated for Best Instrumentalist by the Western Music Association. Raul performed, produced and recorded for ten years with the award-winning Western music group, NEW WEST. He is most noted for his expertise on acoustic guitar and mandolin with a mastery of styles ranging from bluegrass and western swing to 30's jazz in the tradition of the legendary Django Reinhardt.
+
Raul’s CD “Royal Street” earned him international acclaim from jazz reviewers in the US, UK and Europe. In 2006, he performed in the theatre/DVD production of “Primal Twang: The Legacy of the Guitar” alongside luminaries Doc Watson, Eric Johnson, Albert Lee, Mason Williams and Andrew York. Raul has been a guitar instructor for the Colorado Roots Music Camp, Booher Music Camp, and has done guitar clinics for the Jazzmasters Workshop. A very affordable two-hour workshop with him is a marvelous opportunity. Grab your guitar and join the fun.
+
Getting to the Autry is a lot easier if you avoid the Zoo’s perpetual Sunday traffic jam at the Zoo Drive exit from the freeway. Use these directions, thoughtfully provided by WMA:
+
Either: Exit the 5 at Los Feliz Bl, heading west; turn right into Griffith Park on Griffith Park Dr/Crystal Springs Dr; follow Crystal Springs Dr past the merry-go-round and past the golf course, to the Autry on your right.
+
OR, exit the 5 at Western Av, heading west; turn left at Victory Bl/Riverside Dr; cross the 134 Fwy; turn Left at the T intersection onto Zoo Dr; follow Zoo Dr to the Autry on your left.
+
Come early: the workshop fee includes a complimentary admission to the Autry Museum, where you can see the current exhibition, “Sparkle and Twang,” Marty Stuart’s collection of country music memorabilia. That makes this quite a deal for $25.

Sat, Jun 20, Saturdays, on web radio:
3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

Sat, Jun 20; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
3:30 & 7 pm “IF CAN. CAN. IF NO CAN. NO CAN - HAWAI’IAN PIDGIN ENGLISH STORIES AND SLACK KEY GUITAR” with KAMAKA BROWN and slack key guitarist T. DAN HOFSTEDT and native Hawaiian band O’AHU, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Brown, a comic, writer, and producer born and raised in Hawai’i now lives in Southern California. He has a catalog of original stories written in Hawai’ian Pidgin English of pre-statehood Hawai’i told through the eyes of a child living in rural O’ahu. You will enjoy a nostalgic romp through the back roads of country living and the wide eyed wonder of being part of the blue collar neighborhoods of urban Honolulu. Brown’s shows are a “back porch” hang loose journey filled with stories, humor, memories and music.
+
This is a one-of-a-kind unique show that must be experienced to understand. Previously sold out shows in Southern California attest to the power of the spoken word and the joy of a simple solo guitar playing softly like a gentle breeze blowing along a north shore beach at sunset.
+
The Coffee Gallery Backstage’s Bob Stane says, “Kamaka Brown and his show of music and stories is one of my all-time favorite shows at The Coffee Gallery Backstage. This is an offering from a sharp, professional comedian and talented musician replete with a full cadre of supporting wits and players. This is a musical presentation with a generous serving of funny stagecraft. What a delight they are. He and his musician friends weave a tuneful spell between stories of childhood thrills, vivid memories and unique adventures. All from the perspective of soothing country life in sleepy Hawaii. Music is played. Philosophy is exchanged and native wisdom shared. And the music! If anyone in the audience does not like the multi-instrumental extravaganza they are ‘soul deprived’ and seriously humor impaired. The lyrics are clever and funny.”
+
The show features slack key guitarist T. Dan Hofstedt. T. Dan has two CDs of his original compositions. “T. Dan has been influenced by the masters of slack key. His music flows sweet and melodic a perfect background to my stories,” Brown says. Native Hawai’ian band O’ahu joins Kamaka with musical selections drifting in and out of the story telling. More at www.kamakabrown.com. Tix, $15 matinee, $20 evening show.

Make Music Pasadena is a FREE musical celebration throughout Pasadena, on World Music Day, the Summer Solstice. Today, disseminating from its origins in France, sidewalks, parks, courtyards, alleys, building lobbies and other unconventional performance spaces become spontaneous musical stages and social gathering places. Both professional and amateur musicians bring their musical talents to the streets of Pasadena and perform to new crowds. Internationally-known artists perform at two main stages – One Colorado and Levitt Pavilion.
+
Nick Smith, one of the well-known bookers of the Caltech Folk Music Series, tells us about his role in this event: “On absurdly short notice, some of us are putting on a show -- technically, a bunch of shows, all at the same time. Last year, with more planning time, we managed to create 80 music stages. This year, since we didn't get the go-ahead until 3 weeks ago, it's smaller, but still really great. The event includes all kinds of music, but there will be a strong presence of folk and acoustic music.”
+
There’s a show including folk and world music at the Levitt Pavilion in Memorial Park, where RED MOLLY looks like a fine bet, and QUETZAL and TETE are both scheduled there, as well.
+
Armory Center for the Arts (across the street from Memorial Park) returns with an Americana stage (indoors), like they had last year. Their lineup includes MARY COPPIN, DAVID VIDAL, and JOHN STOWERS.
+
The One Colorado stage is very eclectic, but includes at least one artist who is heading up to the “Winnepeg Folk Festival” in a couple of weeks, an indy artist from the Northwest named MIRAH.
+
The central website is www.makemusicpasadena.org. Things are being posted daily, as acts and venues confirm. All events are free.

Sun, Jun 21; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm Scotland's OLD BLIND DOGS perform for Father's Day at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga; 310-455-3723; www.theatricum.com. Scotland's 2007 “Folk Band of the Year,” Old Blind Dogs takes the stage with a tasty mix of traditional and contemporary tunes. Packed with exquisite harmonies, intricate rhythms, warm vocals and evocative lyrics, this music will transport you to the Fair Isle and beyond. The venue is Theatricum Botanicum's rustic outdoor amphitheater. Proceeds from the performance support the non-profit theater's repertory and education programs that entertain, inspire and educate thousands of Angelenos each year.
+
For 15 years, a strong musical vision has carried the Old Blind Dogs through many world tours, personnel changes and new musical directions. At the heart of their worldwide acclaim is a desire to touch people through song. The concert at Theatricum is part of a West Coast tour that will take the band up to Alaska and back down to Southern California. The venue tells us, “A hectic schedule does not deter the band from giving their all to the music.” Lead vocalist Jonny Hardie says, "There's an honesty about live performance and we work hard on stage. We don't really pace ourselves; we just go for it. I think ours is very immediate music."
+
The Dogs have released ten albums, including, most recently, “Four on the Floor” on Compass Records with original band member Jonny Hardie (fiddle, guitar and vocals), Aaron Jones (bass, bouzouki, guitar, vocals), Rory Campbell (border / reel pipes, whistles, vocals) and Fraser Stone (drums, percussion). More, and listen to their music, at www.oldblinddogs.co.uk.
+
"The band keeps its modern grooves authentic by following Robert Burn's 200-year-old model of applying original arrangements to traditional forms," wrote Danny Carnahan in Acoustic Guitar magazine.
+
As for the venue, music runs deep through Theatricum's history. Many of America's great folk musicians have played here: three generations of Guthries - Woody, Arlo, and Sarah Lee - Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Rambling Jack Elliot, Utah Phillips and many, many more. Folk music carries the voice of the people, as does the music found in Shakespeare's plays, mainstays of Theatricum's repertory season.
+
The beginnings of the Theatricum Botanicum can be traced to the early 1950s when Will Geer, a victim of the McCarthy era blacklist (before he became known as the beloved Grandpa on TV's "The Waltons"), opened a theater for blacklisted actors and folk singers on his property in Topanga. Today the theater is run by his family. The two stages are situated in a natural canyon ravine, where audiences are able to relax and enjoy the wilderness during an afternoon or evening's performance. Unlike most theaters in the Los Angeles area that stage continuous runs of a single play, the Theatricum, using a company of actors, performs each play on a rotating basis. By the end of the summer, when all the plays are up and running, it will be possible to see a performance of each in a single weekend. The critically acclaimed Theatricum Botanicum is a recipient of the Margaret Harford Award - the Los Angeles Critics Circle's highest honor - for "sustained excellence," and Artistic Director Ellen Geer was selected for the LA Weekly 1999 Career Achievement Award.
+
In addition to the five plays in this summer's 2009 Summer Repertory Season (Cymbeline, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Cherry Orchard and The Miser), Theatricum offers a variety of satellite programming such as Family Fundays (Saturday and Sunday morning plays and concerts for kids with Creative PlayGround and Peter Alsop's Kids Koncerts); Botanicum Seedlings: A Development Series for Playwrights (free readings of new plays on select Sundays); a variety of music and dance concerts; and, on Sunday, Oct 4, a special performance of selections from Theatricum Botanicum's Americana series that integrate poetry, dialogue, music and songs from various periods during the on-going evolution of our nation.
+
The amphitheaters are terraced into the hillside, so audience members are advised to dress casually (warmly for evenings) and bring cushions for bench seating. Picnickers are welcome on the grounds before or after the performances. More information and tix at 310-455-3723 or www.theatricum.com. General admission, $35/lower tier and $25/upper tier.

6-9 pm GARY ALLEGRETTO & BAND perform at the “Sherman Oaks Galleria Concert Series” at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, 15303 Ventura Bl, Sherman Oaks 91403; www.shermanoaksgalleria.com. They’ve played live on the “Jimmy Kimmel Show” on ABC network TV, and you first heard Gary’s music on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Come and see what prominent Blues critics are raving about:
+
"Harmonica wrangler Gary Allegretto is one of the classiest acts in the music business today, working only with the best backup musicians and taking the time to craft music noted not only for its quality but for its authenticity... and what's best about his genuineness is its completely offhand quality. If someone complains to you that they don't make "real" blues records anymore - albums that sound like lost classics yet retain the freshness of an individual - play Many Shades of Blue for them..." ~ Robert Fontenot, Blues Revue Magazine, June/July 2008.
+
"... Gary Allegretto shines bright on this soulful program of down-to-earth comfort... Allegretto sings with a natural storytelling appeal that’s easy to understand. His harmonica gives the program a zest that ensures magnetic forces. One listen and you’re under his spell. One listen and his audience is sold on pure blues with a message that comes from the heart." ~ Jim Santella, Southland Blues Magazine, Aug 2008.
+
"This is honest music crafted from inspiration, talent, and skills, delivered at a high level of accomplishment. I'm really impressed with the maturity, facility, and depth in Gary's harp playing. He could sure teach a lot of harp players about tone, phrasing, and getting the most expression out of a very expressive instrument. His songwriting, singing and arranging are very accomplished too. No wonder (Many Shades of Blue) is being well received... Gary's music made me feel good, and that's a very attractive quality." ~ Bob Margolin, renowned bluesman from Muddy Waters Band, and blues columnist.

CHRIS WALLACE'S "THE MARK TWAIN YOU DON'T KNOW," an Australian one-man show, comes to L.A for three nights only, at Theatre Palisades, 941 Temescal Canyon Rd, Pacific Palisades 90272; call box office at 310-454-1970 for show times. This has rave reviews, including
"...A masterful one-man show..."
"...Wallace brings it to life with integrity, respect and immense talent..."
"...Wallace's relaxed yet precise and authoritative delivery makes each moment live..."
The material is amazingly edgy and relevant by 21st Century standards, as Mark Twain's take on sex, religion and war are brilliantly performed in this two-hour presentation. With interest mounting as the 100th anniversary of Twain's death approaches in 2010, this show captures an essence of America's most famous author in a totally unexpected way. “The Mark Twain You Don't Know” began its journey in 2004 on Mark Twain's 169th birthday in the Australian city of Ballarat, in the same venue where Twain lectured in 1895. It has since shocked, provoked, challenged and delighted critics and audiences alike:
"...Its content is irreverent and comically vulgar, and Wallace makes it even more entertaining with his splendid delivery..."
"...He makes a convincing case for Twain's continued recognition as one of the great observers of the human condition..."
"...He maintains such a presence on stage; it starts to feel like there's an entire cast performing instead of just one man..."

Tue, Jun 23; Mon-Wed, Jun 22, 23, 24; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:

One of venue impresario Bob Stane’s favorites, and always popular here, they are, says Bob, “a faithful recreation of what it would have been like to see The Beach Boys live, in concert, in their prime. This 5-member lineup is unrivaled in their sound, presentation, and professionalism. There are no backing tracks or extra musicians playing off-stage! SURFIN' SAFARI is as close as you will ever get to seeing the original 5-member lineup of the Beach Boys. The incomparable beauty of their vocal harmonies, the crashing back beat of Dennis Wilson's drums, the soaring surf guitar of Carl Wilson, and the genius of Brian Wilson's music is all here. The uniband choreography, the Fender guitar line up, the famous custom striped shirts, right down to the black suede Beach Boy boots, it's all here. SURFIN' SAFARI provides you with a great show, a great time, and fun, fun, fun till our Daddy takes the T-Bird away!” Tix $18.

Wed, Jun 24; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm EMMYLOU HARRIS, PATTY GRIFFIN, SHAWN COLVIN, & BUDDY MILLER are “THREE GIRLS AND THEIR BUDDY,” at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Av, in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; http://greektheatrela.com.
+
The performance of “Three Girls and Their Buddy” is a powerful evening of melodies and harmonies by megastars of roots-Americana, all four of them multiple-award-winning and accomplished singer-songwriters. The group is certain to present originals from their latest albums: Emmylou Harris’ “All I Intended to Be,” Patty Griffin’s “Children Running Through,” Shawn Colvin’s “These Four Walls,” and Buddy Miller’s recent offering, with his wife Judy, “Written in Chalk.” The set list will be a delightful mix of their originals and their favorite folk, country, and rock covers. All will share the stage, taking turns singing lead while the others do back up on vocals, guitar and hand percussion.
+
EMMYLOU HARRIS, PATTY GRIFFIN, SHAWN COLVIN, & BUDDY MILLER have variously played in each other's bands, sang each other's songs, done guest appearances or produced each other's albums, or done all of the above. The scope and artistry of such broad collaborative interaction is evident in their undeniable chemistry on stage. This is one of our favorite “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” picks of the summer, and an exciting ensemble performance by four beloved, venerable and esteemed all-stars of Americana, as “Three Girls and Their Buddy” perform at the Greek Theatre on June 24.

Without question, he’s one of the top comedic singer-songwriters of our time. He brings clever songs, high humor, political parodies. funny songs about politics and the state of humanity. The Los Angeles Times says, "Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer," while Lehrer himself says, “If I were still performing, I’d be doing Roy Zimmerman songs.”
+
He’s performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” and gave the show the world premiere of one of his albums that went on to win critical acclaim. He’s one of your editor’s all-time favorites.
+
Find out what's funny about war, poverty, ignorance, bigotry, neo-conservatism, homophobia, greed, lust and fear. Roy Zimmerman, who "plays well with others," has shared the stage with such diverse talents as George Carlin, Arlo Guthrie, Kate Clinton, Bill Clinton, Arianna Huffington, Bill Maher and Paul Krassner. In a past performing life, Zimmerman founded and wrote all the material for the satirical folk quartet THE FOREMEN, who recorded for Warner Reprise throughout the ‘90s. As a solo artist, he’s released five albums. When a video of Roy’s performance of his song “Creation Science 101” made the front page of YouTube, it got over 730,000 views, and 11,000 comments, and Roy adds, “many of them coherent.” Tix, $18.

Wed, Jun 23; Mon-Wed, Jun 22, 23, 24; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:

Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Veteran rock-instrumental masters PAUL JOHNSON & GIL ORR have hit upon a unique and winning idea: by leaving out the drums and bass, they put the focus on their delightful dual-guitar interplay (both acoustic and electric), which lends fresh appeal to the surf-instro genre. Paul co-founded the pioneer '60s surf band, the Belairs ("Mr. Moto") and he currently plays with the Surfaris ("Wipeout"). Gil has been with the Chantays ("Pipeline") since the '60s. They have two popular CDs and a growing visibility. They were a big hit last season on "A Prairie Home Companion." The Duo-tones are creating a stir among many music fans who are discovering for the first time just how rich this stuff can be when played with the skill and authority that Paul and Gil bring to it. Always a fave act here. Many encores for a reason.” Tix, $18.

The energetic and splendidly musical SLIGO RAGS are Named in FolkWorks in the “Top Ten / Best of 2008” among the “Top Ten Live Acoustic Bands in L.A.” That write-up notes, “When they performed on radio’s ‘Tied to the Tracks’ on St. Patrick’s Day, 2006, eight of the Top Ten songs on one Celtic music chart were theirs (no other artist appeared more than once in the Top 100). And they’ve grown much since then, with lively Irish music that imparts flavors of bluegrass and jazz.” Two-time winners of the “Orange County Music Awards” for “Best Folk Band,” this dynamic ensemble presents Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the local and not-so-local Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After," still gets international airplay, and was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guinness stout you just ordered at the bar... Sligo Rags really know their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz, and swing manage to sneak their way into the act. Bob Stane adds, “Much fun. This is money-back, no-questions-asked-if-you-are-not-thrilled. Bring friends. Dynamic, up tempo, multi-talented. A fusion that just crackles.” More at www.sligorags.com. $18.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take the dozens of electric Americana shows into account!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
