WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.

RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.

RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.

Each year, the Irvine Fine Arts Center hosts the “Studio Arts Festival,” an Irvine Fine Arts Center fundraiser, in beautiful Heritage Park. It’s “a firsthand look and opportunity to purchase some of the finest artwork by Southern California artists including many Art Center instructors and patrons.” Over 100 artists participate and include a variety of disciplines from ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, painting, photography, textiles, glass art, gourd art and more. There’s live music and food around the lagoon, shopping for visual art, and demonstrations by the artists. Past demonstrations have included ceramic wheel-throwing, portrait sculpture, plein air painting, and weaving. Admission and parking are free.

First Annual “HARVEY HOUSE HULLABALOO” at the old Santa Fe (now Amtrak) Depot / Harvey House complex in Barstow, CA. Three days of living history includes music, western art, Harvey Girl re-enactors, old west cowboy impersonators, vintage wagons and railroad cars, historical encampments, fast draw shootout, cowboy auction, skit competitions, historical Mojave River trail ride, vendors, BBQ, and more, with “top dollar prize for competitions.” Sponsored by the Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce and the Reenactment Guild of America. English expatriate FRED HARVEY took a train ride through the West in the 1870s, and he was appalled at the horrible conditions offered travelers, including trackside eating houses with terrible food at outrageous prices. He made a deal with the Santa Fe Railway, and replaced the deplorable with world-class hospitality on the frontier. The Harvey House was an oasis of civility, with attractive (and quite unavailable) young women in crisp black and white uniform dresses – the famous “Harvey Girls” – and fine food for a reasonable price.

Barstow’s Harvey House was the centerpiece of “Casa del Desierto,” which opened in 1911. Known as the “Jewel of the Desert,” the beautiful complex of hotel, restaurant and train station served proudly through many decades as a place of rest, relaxation, and wonderful food for the weary Santa Fe and Union Pacific rail traveler and for those driving the legendary Route 66. It served civilian and military travelers, and the service was always impeccable. It was all nearly lost in the Landers Earthquake in the late 20th century, and suffered the cheesy addition of a Greyhound station thattempted to replicate the stone and brick architecture with papier mache.

Today, Casa del Desierto has been resplendently restored, and will be the centerpiece of this new festival. Calico “Ghost Town” is nearby, for those seeking variety. Annual “CLACK MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL” (CMF), formerly “BLUEGRASS 'N MORE,” in Morehead, KY, features lots of bluegrass, traditional, acoustic and other music, showcasing regional talent and nationally-recognized musicians and songwriters. Most of the activities of CMF are held at or near the Cora Wilson Stewart Moonlight School in the historic First Street Arts District. In addition to music, various arts and heritage events are held during the festival, including presentation of the “Appalachian Treasure Award,” that recognizes individuals dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian culture and traditions. “A Day in the Country Folk Art Show & Sale” and the “Appalachian Arts and Craft Fair” are held in conjunction with the festival. Steve does an informal concert and presentation titled "Getting the most from your gear." Learn from Steve how to design your personal sound. Steve Trovato has written 22 guitar method books for Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard Publications, and completed 7 guitar instructional videos for REH Publications and Music Sales in London, England. He is best known as a world class country guitarist, though he plays and is equally proficient at many popular guitar styles. Steve is a professor in the Studio Jazz Guitar Department at the University of Southern California and maintains a high visibility career as a recording artist and studio musician. He is a former Musician’s Institute department manager, and he conducts clinics and master classes around the world. Currently, Steve is touring with former Supertramp guitarist Carl Verheyen. Steve is Director of Instruction for the new web based guitar educational site called www.iperform3d.com. Steve is responsible for creating all lessons at iPerform3D. His goal is simple: making sure iPerform delivers the best possible lessons available anywhere. Steve’s most recent CD is “Steve Trovato, Country Jazzmaster” (2007). Steve is now working on a new instructional book / CD / Crossover Pick combination called “Universal Picking Technique”. He is joined in this effort by AFG President Greg M. Eliza Gilkyson grew-up in a musical family with a father renowned for his film scores. Her brother Tony Gilkyson is an in-demand L.A. musician, but Eliza has played the world. In addition to Eliza’s eighth and newest CD “Beautiful World” (2008, on Red House Records), Joan Baez chose two of Eliza’s songs for her own new album, “Day After Tomorrow.” In 2008, Eliza was chosen to deliver the keynote address to the International Folk Alliance Conference and to perform on the “Cowboy Train” across Canada. Grupo Falso Baiano performs a blend of traditional Brazilian choro music with modern influences such as jazz, flamenco and samba. Choro is Brazil’s first national music, born in the cafés of Rio in the late 1800’s, and reflects the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure most closely resembling Baroque Classical music. GFB's unique exploration of choro spans nearly 100 years, including everything from traditional to contemporary classics, as well as original arrangements and jazz-influenced reinterpretations. They began as a trio in 2003 with members Brian Moran (seven-string guitar), Zack Pitt-Smith (flute, clarinet and saxophone) and Ami Molinelli (percussion), and evolved into a quartet when Jesse Appelman (mandolin) joined the lineup in 2006. In addition to performing and touring, the members of Grupo Falso Baiano are committed to extending the reach of choro music, and have collaborated with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra and the “Around the World” Music Program, bringing choro music to students throughout California. Choro is a traditional form of popular Brazilian music, similar to jazz, blending African rhythms.

The Kingston Trio have been around since 1957, and like the Beatles, they created a national audience for their songs and influences that changed music. Their song, “Tom Dooley,” gave birth to the Folk Revival when it went gold in 1958. Deeply rooted in American popular culture, their songs are finally recognized as timeless, and not simply as statements of a time gone by. Over 300 of the songs for which they are known are now available as cell phone ring tones, including “500 Miles,” “M.T.A.,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” and “Wimoweh,” and historical songs they perform, like “Old Joe Clark” and “Ramblin’ Boy.” Despite the death last year of founding member Nick Reynolds, and of one of the group’s original inspirations, Travis Edmonson in May, they carry on with tuneful, thoughtful, and feel-good music. Their performance isn’t just entertainment, it’s music history.

”I have caught singer/songwriter Ron Ely several times at the Fret House in Covina's open mic night and have enjoyed his selections, so who was I to say no to an invitation to see him and a very different band in Altadena? I was encouraged to attend the show in pirate attire. I dragged out my costume box and complied, complete with my trusty scabbard at my side and wondered what the night would bring.

”There was a decent sized crowd at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, although I would have liked to have seen a few more for a Friday night. Booker Bob Stane draws some of the most amazing acts to this intimate venue and you always come away satisfied. Check out the schedule at www.coffeegallerybackstage.com.

”Now to the main event. Ron Ely took the stage first. He gave us a full set of original and cover tunes, many with a sea or sailor theme. His is quite formidable on the guitar, decent on the harmonica and he has a very pleasant voice. He made us feel comfortable and even invited us to sing along, and many did. His time flew by and when he relinquished his spot, it seemed almost too soon. The audience definitely could have sat through more.

”Next up was the headliner- Pirates of the Black Swan. Now for some, the word weird might be the first thing to come to mind, but after a few tunes, you would be thinking more like cool or fun. This group has all the swagger and attitude you would expect from pirates without the pretentiousness.

”The core of the band consists of the male Captain and female First Mate on guitars, female crew members on mandolin, fiddle and tambourine and a male crewman on drums, harmonica and other instruments. All sing and they even had a few guests join them for numbers, as well as a dancer.

”This isn't your ancestor's pirate music-- it's rock and folk and ... hard to explain. Pirates of the Black Swan played the theme from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" and a few other traditional songs, but they also offered up selections such as "Lady Marmalade," "Let It Be" and "Brown Sugar" with a few seemingly original pieces thrown in. Yet this still doesn't capture them because their show is truly a show-- they act, interact with the audience and each other, dance, joke and more.

”The crowd quite enjoyed the concert and many made a point to pause to chat with the band members before leaving the venue. I also overheard quite a few people asking when the group would be back again.

”Would I see this band again? You bet. Would I bring a friend? I would anyone who would like a good time that is a little out of the ordinary.”

7 pm RICHARD GREENE with the SOUTH BAY YOUTH ORCHESTRA in Marsee Auditorium, El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Bl, Torrance; 310-329-5345. Richard Greene just won the 2009 “Music Legend” award at the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival. When it comes to authentic, old-time fiddle music, he is known as "one of the most innovative and influential fiddle players of all time." He grew up in L.A. studying classical music until his encounter with the pyrotechnic fiddling of Scotty Stoneman; from then on Richard was a fiddler. He was the 1st place winner at the very first Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest in 1961, and he first attained larger prominence with Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in 1966. The legendary Monroe said of him, “There’s not a man in the country that can do what Richard can do.” He went on to found the revolutionary folk-rock group, Seatrain, with the Beatles’ George Martin, pioneering the first use of electric violin in rock music. His advanced technique and intense yet "cool" tone galvanized audiences and influenced a generation of fiddle players, including Darol Anger, Alison Krauss, Sam Bush and Stuart Duncan.

In 1974, Richard's return to acoustic music occasioned the invention, with David Grisman, of "New Grass" or "New Acoustic" instrumental music, now a mainstay throughout the world's acoustic music festivals on a select few radio shows, like “Tied to the Tracks.” He founded the trailblazing Greene String Quartet, creating the first-ever amalgam of “Jazz-Folk-Rock-Chamber Music.” His many acclaimed CDs in the folk and bluegrass genres have been honored with Grammy and IBMA awards, and one, “Sales Tax Toddle,” was Grammy-nominated for “Bluegrass Album of Year.” He won the 1997 Grammy for “Best Instrumental Performance of the Year” and was nominated in ‘98 for “Best Bluegrass Recording of the Year.”

Richard has served as leader of his own groups, including Muleskinner, The Greene String Quartet, The Grass is Greener, and Richard Greene & The Brothers Barton. Throughout the year he headlines at major festivals, including The “Telluride Bluegrass Festival” and “Durango Meltdown.” Currently, he leads seminars nationwide at The Mancini Institute, the RockyGrass Academy, the Festival of Fiddle Tunes, the Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camp, the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp, The Swannanoa Gathering, and dozens of ad hoc workshops. 2008 marked the debut of his own piece for bluegrass violin and orchestra, "What If Mozart Played With Bill Monroe?" The Los Angeles Times, which hardly ever notices anybody in the Americana music world, wrote that Pat Donohue is "a masterful guitarist and talented singer-songwriter of blues, folk and jazz." His talents are displayed weekly in his radio performances, where his guitar playing, writing, and singing are featured regularly and praised by host Garrison Keillor. Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss, Loose Ties and other national performers have recorded his original songs. Two of his well-known and played parody (funny) songs are, “Sukiyaki” and “So You Want To Play Guitar.” This guy is a star and the show will sell out. He plays one other Southern Cal show, Sunday night at 7 pm, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, and that one will sell-out, too.

Quinn is a 2006 WAMMIE winner (Washington Area Music Association Awards) for Traditional Folk Vocalist, and Boston Folk Festival Finalist for songwriting. She can sing in Irish, and belt the blues. Bowers is a 2005 Kerrville New Folk Finalist/ 2006 South Florida Folk Finalist, and known for his songs that literally paint stories...they've even been called "folk operas." Together, in 2007, Siobhan Quinn and Michael Bowers have been selected as Kerrville New Folk Finalists, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artists, Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Formal Showcase Artists, Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Formal Showcase Artists, Performance Alley (formal showcase) Artists at the International Folk Alliance Conference, and Alternates for the FAR West Folk Alliance Conference. Roy Zimmerman, who "plays well with others," has shared the stage with such diverse talents as George Carlin, Arlo Guthrie, Kate Clinton, Bill Clinton, Arianna Huffington, Bill Maher and Paul Krassner. Zimmerman founded and wrote all the material for the satirical folk quartet THE FOREMEN, who recorded for Warner Reprise throughout the Nineties. As a solo artist, Roy has released five albums. Known for their witty, adventurous original songs (multiple ASCAP award winners) and breathtaking vocal reinterpretations of everything from classic rock to classics that rock, The Bobs have played everywhere from Lincoln Center to L.A.'s Universal Amphitheater to Berlin's Passionkirche. Together since 1981, the original "band without instruments," has toured the world several times, released 14 albums and several concert DVDs, appeared on the Emmy Awards (with Jason Alexander as the fifth Bob), and lent their voices to countless commercials and films. Grupo Falso Baiano performs a blend of traditional Brazilian choro music with modern influences such as jazz, flamenco and samba. Choro is Brazil’s first national music, born in the cafés of Rio in the late 1800’s, and reflects the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure most closely resembling Baroque Classical music. GFB's unique exploration of choro spans nearly 100 years, including everything from traditional to contemporary classics, as well as original arrangements and jazz-influenced reinterpretations. They began as a trio in 2003 with members Brian Moran (seven-string guitar), Zack Pitt-Smith (flute, clarinet and saxophone) and Ami Molinelli (percussion), and evolved into a quartet when Jesse Appelman (mandolin) joined the lineup in 2006. In addition to performing and touring, the members of Grupo Falso Baiano are committed to extending the reach of choro music, and have collaborated with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra and the “Around the World” Music Program, bringing choro music to students throughout California. Choro is a traditional form of popular Brazilian music, similar to jazz, blending African rhythms.

About OTOÑO LUJAN and CONJUNTO LOS POCHOS:
Their original song, “Margie’s,” earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Formed in the summer of 1997, the four-piece ensemble began with Otoño Luján and Elliott Baribeault. The ensemble specializes in conjunto music, a small-group dance music driven by accordion and bajo sexto. Today, “Los Pochos” presents a genuine L.A. expression of traditional conjunto music to a steadily-growing audience that cuts across race, nationality and social status. The band's name initially came about to address the perceived peculiarity of a bunch of [primarily] acculturated Mexicans (Pochos), barely speaking Spanish and playing "Norteño" music (border music from Northern Mexico). Ironically though, this music - having stemmed from the merging of European and Texas-Mexican cultures in the late 1800's - continues to reflect the process of Pochismo (or acculturation) through its lyrics and music. Luján is without the band tonight, but he will perform at the Ford Amphitheatre with Conjunto Los Pochos on Sun, Jun 28, at 7:30 pm as part of “SqueezeFestL.A.”

About Accordion Diva GEE RABE:
An accordionist since 1975, Ms. Rabe has won major awards for her performance, including the Accordion Federation of North America's “Virtuoso Western Classical” and “Virtuoso Jazz” competitions in 1984 and 1985 respectively. Ms. Rabe is diverse in her performance styles and currently performs with VAUD AND THE VILLAINS (folk / blues / zydeco) and the HABERDASHERY QUARTET (chamber jazz / Gypsy jazz / tango / Balkan). In 2007, she was the accordionist in the Getty Villa production "Tug of War," which was selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the top ten productions of the year.

Grupo Falso Baiano performs a blend of traditional Brazilian choro music with modern influences such as jazz, flamenco and samba. Choro is Brazil’s first national music, born in the cafés of Rio in the late 1800’s, and reflects the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure most closely resembling Baroque Classical music. GFB's unique exploration of choro spans nearly 100 years, including everything from traditional to contemporary classics, as well as original arrangements and jazz-influenced reinterpretations. They began as a trio in 2003 with members Brian Moran (seven-string guitar), Zack Pitt-Smith (flute, clarinet and saxophone) and Ami Molinelli (percussion), and evolved into a quartet when Jesse Appelman (mandolin) joined the lineup in 2006. In addition to performing and touring, the members of Grupo Falso Baiano are committed to extending the reach of choro music, and have collaborated with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra and the “Around the World” Music Program, bringing choro music to students throughout California. Choro is a traditional form of popular Brazilian music, similar to jazz, blending African rhythms.

SLIM CHANSE was “in another life, under another name, a pretty-well-known composer,” or at least he made a living at it. But one day it all seemed pretty silly. So he chucked it, along with his college teaching job, and set out to seek his misfortune. Slim writes “beyond-genre songs” (he calls them “alt-alt”) with words like “ephemera” and “illegitimati” in them, about the oddball characters you meet everyday if you take the time and listen to their stories. He tosses-in a lot of stories of his own, some of which are true, and has been known to launch into a Shakespeare soliloquy or a philosophical diatribe at the slightest (even imagined) provocation. And for someone as funny as he is, he can sure play the guitar, and always has great players with him. Hers was, after all, the brilliant mind that conceived one of Nashville's most unique and revered cult acts, ETHEL & THE SHAMELESS HUSSIES, who broke above the waves in the late ‘80s to mainstream nominations as “Comedy Act of the Year” on MCA Records. Kacey produced Kinky Friedman's critically acclaimed project, “Pearls in the Snow,” featuring Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, and Dwight Yoakam. Tracy is the only singer-songwriter anywhere who has an Emmy and a Peabody Award. Most of her original songs, including “Waffle Boy” – winner of the 8th Annual “Great American Song Contest” -- debuted on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” en-route to global airplay. In addition to her identity as a musician, Tracy is a well-known comedy writer in L.A., creator of the Jim Belushi series, “According to Jim,” and co-writer of the famous “coming-out” episode of the “Ellen” series. Tracy is equally known for her involvement as co-founder, performer and director with the popular improv group, The Groundlings, having shared that stage with the likes of SNL’s Laraine Newman (Tracy’s sister), the late Phil Hartmann, Julia Sweeney, Jon Lovitz, and many others.

Tracy is rapidly gaining recognition as a singer-songwriter. Her debut CD, “A Place in The Sun,” is, in a manner of speaking, the culmination of her career shift from writing TV sitcoms to pursuing music full time. Tracy has always been a songwriter, but this muse was on hiatus for a while as she joined the writing staffs of various shows, including “Cheers,” “The Nanny,” “The Drew Carey Show” and her aforementioned award wins.

Tracy’s remarkable ability to craft a great song extends well beyond her wonderful sense of humor. Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!

If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out: you’ll need 130 pages just to print-out the events for these 13 days!

Just check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the paper, either, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
