MASSIVE LOSS: LONDON RIOTERS BURN INDIE CDS IN SONY WAREHOUSE
In the recent violent riots in the UK, the entire stock of CDs for many independent labels were destroyed when rioters torched the Sony/PIAS warehouse in North London. Some labels reportedly lost as many as 750,000 CDs.
Superb singer-songwriter SIMON LYNGE wrote from England to tell us the Sony warehouse there had burned to the ground. He began, “'The Future' burned in London riots!”
It's a tragedy that warrants that expression in both general and specific terms. Simon's CD is titled, “The Future.” He explains, “My London-based label, LoMax Records Ltd, was one of the labels who lost their entire stock, including my album 'The Future' and are forced to do a massive reprint of their entire catalog.”
Simon continues, “As a way to help them cover some of this cost, I'm encouraging all my fans and friends to buy digital copies of my album, either for themselves or as gifts for others. You can purchase it from the STORE on my website, which has links to Itunes and other digital outlets for various countries, as well as the option to purchase special signed copies of the physical album that weren't destroyed, since they were stored elsewhere. 'The Future' is not currently available digitally in North America.

INAUGURAL VENTURA FOLK FESTIVAL "BOUND FOR GLORY" IS POSTPONED

The Guide received word Wednesday morning, August 17, that the festival will NOT happen this weekend. Check the two great shows at Zoey's (news feature #3) if you're already set to be in Ventura for the weekend.

Following is what WAS planned, and our notation of the possibility of trouble...
It has a very impressive lineup, but just a few days out, it seems to have communication shortcomings. The festival runs this Saturday, August 20, noon-7 pm and Sunday, August 21, noon-6 pm. It's a benefit for Food Share and The Harmony Project.
Scheduled to perform are JIM MESSINA, RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOT, PETER CASE (Plimsouls), THE WHITE BUFFALO, JOHN DOE (X, The Knitters) with DEAD ROCK WEST, JAMIE DRAKE, JUSTINE BENNETT, B WILLING JAMES, THE LONESOME TRAVELER CAST, SHANE ALEXANDER, TED LENNON, MATT DUKE, JAY NASH, TONY LUCCA, CHRIS PIERCE, DELANEY GIBSON, LEE KOCH, JOEL ECKELS, THE RINCON RAMBLERS, TALL TALES & THE SILVER LINING, PHIL SALAZAR & THE KINFOLK, GARRISON STARR, 50 STICKS OF DYNAMITE. (Note that others, previously announced, are not included in the latest festival info, but DO appear in other media sources. They are J.D. Still, locals who have been stalwarts of the Ventura County acoustic scene have expressed plenty of enthusiasm. Gene Rubin of the Ventura Bluegrass Jam tells us, “Fun in the sun! Bring your blanket and low back chair to lounge on the large grassy area in front of two performance stages. Lots of shade, too, under the park's huge 120-year-old fig tree!”
Gene reports the festival says, “Let us feed and water you - we've hand selected amazing food, beer and wine vendors for your enjoyment so please leave your coolers at home. Spend the afternoon not only listening to great music but meet local artisans as they display their beautiful wares for sale. Kids are welcome to bring their laughter and wonder. Volunteers needed, gets you in free!”

Organizers DO have ticket info available on the festival's own site, though schedules, and even who performs on which day, had not been released at press time, “Ventura Rocks,” the event's Rosetta stone – its Facebook page – was blank. The other promoted site, the multigenre music omnibus for Ventura County, provided just a link to the facebook page. So go to the link for tickets, below, to seek more info.

Okay, so lots of folks planned tom attend the Ventura Foilk festival and it's cancelled. How about fun at a local airshow? It even offers an unusual '30s-'40s-period music event!
On Saturday & Sunday, August 20 & 21, from 9 am-5 pm, is the annual “WINGS OVER CAMARILLO” Airshow and Live Saturday night '40s-radio-show-style dinner dance, at Camarillo Airport, Camarillo Wings Association 79 Daily Drive #265, Camarillo 93010; www.WingsOverCamarillo; 805-551-0983.
Seven Pilots from around the world race wing tip to wingtip around a closed pylon obstacle course. The pilots are some of the best precision stunt and demonstration pilots in the world and include multiple Aviation World Record Holders.
Featuring home built experimental airplanes flying a Slalom course, all jockeying for position at the same time, makes this edge of your seat excitement - like NASCAR with airplanes. Race Pilot Dave Riggs, who lead the American Team to victory in the 2010 China UARC races says, "This is Air Racing on steroids. It’s no longer the guy with the biggest engine who wins. It’s the pilot with the skill and daring that comes away with the gold;
This year, the 474th Fighter Group Association (pilots who flew P-38’s in WW-II) will join regional volunteers to support the Wings Over Camarillo airshow. An expanded flight demonstration program features ever popular aerobatic routines; Chuck Aaron in his fully aerobatic (Red Bull) helicopter, John Collver flying his beautiful SNJ, Rob Harrison, “The Tumbling Bear” performing breath-taking maneuvers. Over 80 aircraft will fly including the Goodyear Blimp, vintage planes, and WWII fighters, bombers and transports. The Grand Finale plans a spectacular display of about 30 planes in formation flight over an amazed crowd.
Feature of the Camarillo Airshow is the accessibility of the planes, pilots and crews to the public. Walk among the planes, take photos and ask questions of the pilots and airshow volunteers.
Airshow and daytime activities tix, $15, either day; kids under age 12 are free.

SATURDAY EVENING MUSIC EVENT:
Pete Jacobs’ “WARTIME RADIO REVIEW” live in the museum hangar follows the Airshow on Saturday, August 20, from 6-10 pm. It's presented by the Commemorative Air Force's Southern Cal Wing, based in Camarillo.
Pete Jacobs’ Wartime Radio Review plays the hits of the thirties and forties, interspersed with late-breaking news-stories from the war-years, plus some 1940-style radio commercials and even original songs in the style of the period. Listening to this band will be as close as you can get to going back in time or attending U.S.O. tours of the era. The show brings three young female vocalists, a hot, driving rhythm section, and an eight-piece horn section. The “classic-swing” sound is both full and authentic. It will be a fun evening’s entertainment for performers and guests at the weekend's airshow. Proceeds from the evening support the So Cal Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and Wings over Camarillo.

MUSICAL CELEBRATION FOR ZOEY'S 5th ANNIVERSARY THIS WEEKEND
While the First Annual VENTURA FOLK FESTIVAL was canceled (they are saying “postponed”) in a nearby park, there is still some good news in the city by the ocean.
Ventura's premiere acoustic music venue, Zoey's, will celebrate its first landmark birthday this weekend, with fine shows Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Saturday, the lineup of THE WHITE BUFFALO; JAY NASH, TONY LUCCA, MATT DUKE; and B WILLING JAMES & JUSTINE BENNETT will kick off at 7 pm.
Sunday at 7 pm, it's the RINCON RAMBLERS, DELANEY GIBSON, LEE KOCH, JAMIE DRAKE, & TED LENNON.
Many were set to perform at the canceled festival, so you can still see them, IF you get your tickets in time.
Zoey’s Café survived a move last year to a new location and some shows in a temporary venue. They now have two concert rooms as well as the cafe. UHH, THE MUSIC BIZ IS “EXACTLY LIKE A SILENT MOVIE?” – REALLY?
The self-styled cutting-edge technology gurus at Mashable just posted "This is exactly what the music biz is like." It stars THE BARR BROTHERS, a Montreal quartet, in their extremely old-fashioned take on the current state of the music industry: a silent film set in the Wild West.
The band tells the story of their hunt for a record label re-imagined as a "gunslinging adventure" in the video (soon-to-be-viral?) at http://mashable.com/2011/08/15/barr-brothers.
The Barr Brothers' true story is slightly less calamitous than that of their fictionalized mustachioed counterparts. Their self-titled album is due on Secret City Records September 27.

“FOUR FRIENDS ACOUSTIC MUSIC SERIES” ANNOUNCES 6 MONTH SCHEDULE
They began early last spring, took the summer off (and had some shows at the short-lived Open Borders venue, in the same community) and now they're back with a strong six-month acoustic music season at their namesake art space, Four Friends Gallery, in Thousand Oaks.
The new season bring shows by DAN NAVARRO and MATT CARTSONIS on September 10; DIRK HAMILTON plus CINDY KALMENSON & THE LUCKY DUCKS on November 5; KATY MOFFATT plus BRAD COLERICK on December 17; the EDITED trio of DAVID ZINK, BRETT PERKINS, & MARK DAVIS on January 14; and JAIME MICHAELS plus DAVE MORRISON on February 4. (No concert in October.)
All shows are Saturday evenings, and concert patrons get a dinner-and-a-show ticket. Promoter Marilyn Babcock cooks dinner for guests at each event. (She is renowned for her “you-build” taco and enchilada bar.) Each time, doors open at 6 pm to eat. The scheduled performance begins at 7 pm.
Marilyn tells us, “The venue is very accessible seating for 100. Soft drinks free, no host bar. Kids OK. Song circle follows performances, so bring your guitars; amazing piano available.” Emcee is Dave Morrison.
Here's a preview of one that's waaay ahead. On Saturday, January 14, the EDITED trio of DAVID ZINK, BRETT PERKINS, & MARK DAVIS will perform, with individual sets by each member, too. These three guys have done several European tours since we last saw them together in Southern Cal, a year ago. MARK DAVIS had the “Album of the Decade” in the L.A. Times OC edition; transplanted Californian BRETT PERKINS has had originals in the European charts; DAVID ZINK has built a loyal fan base with innovative acoustic originals for years. Together, their writing, instrumental arrangements and rich vocal harmonies are extra special. You'll be able to come hear why they keep getting booked in Europe.
Beyond that, let's note the venue. Art galleries just work – really well – as acoustic music venues. Take the Coffee Gallery Backstage (where the art is hung outside the music hall), or Gallery Theatre in Hollywood's Barnsdall Art Park, or the Cafe Muse in Hollywood, or more improvised music venues of Cena Bistro Wine Bar in West Hills, or Eco-Logical Art Gallery in L.A., or the nearby (unaffiliated) pair of G2 Gallery and Altered Space Gallery, both in Venice, or Infusion Gallery in downtown L.A., or Left Coast Wine Bar & Gallery in Glendale, or Rock Rose Gallery in Sycamore Grove, or Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse & Art Gallery in San Pedro.

ATLANTA HORROR FILM FESTIVAL
We've told you before about pianist / keyboardist / composer MARC BOSSERMAN. Lots seems to be happening in a hurry in his world. His birthday is Saturday. He's going soon to the Budapest Festival as an invited performer and competitor. And he just wrote to tell us, “I'm in the Horror genre now!” His original, “Invisible,” just got accepted to the Atlanta Horror Film Festival and he is giddy over it.

The main reason we're telling you about Marc again is because he has a message for all of us. Marc says:
“Create, Create, Create! And one big reason for the best Birthday ever is that I get to spend all my time creating ART!”

The specifics will manifest if we create. For Marc, he says the specifics are, “I'm midst production or writing on about 10 songs with about as many artists and they are all wonderful. With A-list guitarist/producer/songwriter THOMM JUTZ (Nanci Griffith, Mary Gauthier) at the helm, the acoustic, roots-based, Americana sound of The 1861 Project comes to life with the help of songwriting and creative direction from PETER CRONIN, executive production from PAUL SCHATZKIN, and stirring performances from some of Nashville’s finest singers and songwriters. Under Jutz' direction, distinctive artists collaborate on a musical collection that explores the historically rich era and seeks out the wisdom and warnings latent in countless Civil War stories.
Brought together by their interest in the Civil War and their shared belief in the inspirational and restorative power of music, Jutz, Cronin, and Schatzkin were naturally drawn to the stories of everyday people who experienced the war. The 1861 Project seeks to push beyond the broad strokes of Civil War history with compelling, emotional songs. “I Have” tells of a man counting his fallen friends as he walks the hundreds of barefoot miles home from the surrender at Appomattox. Another song, “Eyes,” relates the story of an Irish immigrant, one of many drafted into Union service from their new home in New York City, while the exuberant "Gospel Train" is sung in the voice of a runaway slave "riding" the Underground Railroad to freedom.
As America observes the sesquicentennial of The American Civil War, that historic conflict still resonates today with lessons that can be expressed in the language, stories and songs of the present. Inspired by their shared passion for American history and their love for their adopted home in the American south, the three musical colleagues inyend the 1861 Project as “a one-of-a-kind collection of songs that imagine the lives of the real people who lived through and fought the American Civil War.”
“This project seeks to bring change via affirmation, not defamation,” Schatzkin explains. “Though the Civil War was won by the North, the inequality at the heart of the fight remains an issue that continues to be worked out in American society. This music is our way of contributing to that effort.”
The founding principles of America, and the great fight over those ideals by the Union and the Confederacy are especially relevant and poignant to German-born Project producer Thomm Jutz, who is currently in the midst of the naturalization process to become an American citizen. It's what gives Jutz – and The 1861 Project – such a unique perspective, and it's at the heart of his heartfelt desire to express that distinctly American idea through music.
The sounds, the stories, and the people that populate The 1861 Project are uniquely American, and deeply human.
“We love our country, but not in a ‘my country right or wrong’ way,” Schatzkin says. “In the song ‘Ridin’ Like a Rebel,’ the lyrics state ‘One thing can not be denied, brave men fought on either side.’ We’re presenting the Civil War story in a non-partisan manner, in the hope of initiating a sincere discussion about what the Civil War means in American society today.”

Grammy-winning comedian / actor / banjo virtuoso musician STEVE MARTIN has been touring with THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS musical partners from his second CD. NASA RESEARCH CONFIRMS “IT'S A SMALL WORLD, AFTER ALL”
It's been years since any of us could afford to go to Disneyland. Still, that damn anthem with all the animated dolls is forever lodged just beneath the veneer of consciousness. No one can ever again use what was once a simple popular expression without that song being evoked. Not even reading something from NASA. And, it seems, not even the geek elite within NASA.
On August 16, the space agency announced, “A NASA-led research team has confirmed what Walt Disney told us all along: Earth really is a small world, after all.”
Wait for it. Here comes the science. “Since Charles Darwin's time, scientists have speculated that the solid Earth might be expanding or contracting. That was the prevailing belief, until scientists developed the theory of plate tectonics, which explained the large-scale motions of Earth's lithosphere, or outermost shell. Even with the acceptance of plate tectonics half a century ago, some Earth and space scientists have continued to speculate on Earth's possible expansion or contraction on various scientific grounds.”
Seems a new NASA study has laid those speculations to rest, using space measurement tools and a new data calculation technique. The team detected no statistically significant expansion of the solid Earth.
NASA asks, “So why should we care if Mother Nature is growing?” (Jon Stewart should have fun with THAT one.) The NASA statement answers, “Earth's shape is constantly changing. Tectonic forces such as earthquakes and volcanoes push mountains higher, while erosion and landslides wear them down. In addition, large-scale climate events like El Nino and La Nina redistribute vast water masses among Earth's ocean, atmosphere and land.”
Scientists care because, to put movements of Earth's crust into proper context, they need a frame of reference. Any significant change in Earth's radius will alter our understanding of our planet's physical processes and is fundamental to the branch of science called geodesy, which seeks to measure Earth's shape and gravity field, and how they change over time.
Measuring changes in Earth's size hasn't exactly been easy for scientists to "get their arms around." After all, they can't just wrap a giant tape measure around Earth's belly to get a definitive reading. Fortunately, the field of high-precision space geodesy gives scientists tools they can use to estimate changes in Earth's radius.
Tools include the same Global Positioning System, the U.S.-built space-based global navigation system, that enables your car to find the gig. (Think of things like that the next time you go up against one of those cut-the-budget zealots.)
After all the sophisticated measurin' and cipherin' and figurin', scientists determined the result. They estimated the average change in Earth's radius to be 0.004 inches (0.1 millimeters) per year, or about the thickness of a human hair. They declare that as “a rate considered statistically insignificant.” Maybe, but incredibly impressive they could measure it!
An international group of scientists led by Xiaoping Wu of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, declared, "Our study provides an independent confirmation that the solid Earth is not getting larger at present, within current measurement uncertainties."
So, property values will only get crazy when rising sea levels decrease the amount of land, and not because of planetary expansion or contraction. Great. I still can't get that Disney song out of my head.
