Fri, Aug 26:
8 pm VICKI GENFAN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations number (NEW, May 2011) is 626-798-6236. (“The venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
Using 29 alternate tunings and the percussive technique she calls 'slap-tap', Vicki creates waves of sound with two hands and her voice. Drawing from folk, jazz, pop, soul and world music, whether covering the tunes of others or presenting her own compositions, Vicki has a distinctive style that is pushing the boundaries of the singer/songwriter genre. “I understand completely why the audience applauds and whistles so wildly...this is fiery, living music.” - IndieMusic.com.
She has been featured at the International Montreal Jazz Festival, Germany’s Open Strings Guitar Festival and Italy’s Soave Guitar Festival. Luna Guitars has unveiled the Vicki Genfan model (created by master luthier Gray Burchette) with all the bells and whistles that Vicki’s playing requires, including a Jumbo body which lends itself to the full tones she needs for her percussive style.
"I forgive myself for forgetting what a great singer she is; it's no wonder...her voice moves inside me as only something that comes from inside can." - Frank Goodman, Pure Music
Sometimes the revolution begins quietly and only later does the full impact sink in. That’s how it was when Vicki Genfan won the title of Guitar Superstar in the 2008 competition sponsored by Guitar Player Magazine. Jim Fusilli of the Wall Street Journal said, “It's a stunning victory, a barrier shattered. Guitar Player is a male-dominated domain -- tThe magazine is often a tribute to speed, power, volume and gear. Ms. Genfan plays an acoustic guitar without effects."
Vicki has joined the world’s greatest guitarists and musicians at festivals such as The International Montreal Jazz Festival, Germany’s Open Strings Guitar Festival and Italy’s Soave Guitar Festival. In 2005, she was a featured artist on “La Guitara”, the first compilation CD featuring female guitarists from around the globe, released by Vanguard Records. She is in demand for guitar workshops, master classes, clinics and dealer demos.
“After witnessing her mind-blowing performance of an original composition entitled ‘Atomic Reshuffle,’ a panel of guitardom’s elite dubbed Vicki Genfan 2008 Guitar Superstar. Contained within the 3:57 acoustic tour-de-force was a combination of playing techniques that produced not just chords and melodies, but also bell-like harmonics and percussive rhythms. Genfan’s approaches to composition and playing stem from her desire to capture dense harmonic ingredients, her affinity for open tunings, and her dream to groove like Earth, Wind & Fire’s Verdine White.” ~ Chris Buono, Guitar Player Magazine.
Tix, $18.

Both tours were amazing, and the band got such a warm welcome in France, especially in Paris (where I grew up) and in Farges-les-Macon, a beautiful little village in Bourgogne where my grandmother lives and where I spent many of my summer vacations. I uploaded photos on my facebook music page, if anyone is curious – www.facebook.com/jessicafichotmusic?sk=photos.”

7 pm “FAR-WEST FOLK ALLIANCE BENEFIT” with BORDER RADIO, SUSIE GLAZE & HILONESOME, and MERLIN SNIDER & FRIENDS, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations number (NEW, May 2011) is 626-798-6236. (“The venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).

SUSIE & THE HILONESOME BAND (7 pm) won the “Just Plain Folks 2006 Music Awards” for “Best Roots Album.” The Guide's editor, writing in Folkworks Magazine, named them among "Folkworks' Top Ten Live Acoustic Bands in Southern California for 2008," writing "Susie is justifiably endorsed by Appalachian music legend Jean Ritchie, and the band has a fine repertoire of beyond-bluegrass originals from its chief songwriter, Rob Carlson. They can take you up in the hollars, or sound like a female-fronted Asleep at the Wheel." This is the best in New Bluegrass to Appalachia-folk-roots-fusion, an experience of gorgeous eclectic blends of mountain folk and originals, all with Susie Glaze's remarkable voice. (www.susieglaze.com)
MERLIN SNIDER (7:50 pm) is a singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitar player in the Americana story-telling tradition. His music is a soulful blend of folk-blues, alternative country and western swing. He is "about as fine a songwriter and story teller as you're likely to find," wrote "Wildy's World." Bob Stane, producer of The Coffee Gallery Backstage, said Merlin "is the genuine article when it comes to wit and humor. (www.merlinsnider.com)
BORDER RADIO's music (8:40 pm) roams the dial of Americana, from a bluegrass drive through lush ballads and dustbowl swing – you haven't heard their originals before, but you recognize 'em. Their songs are “about something” whether a story of a dustbowl wife or a lonesome high plains instrumental. Border Radio got their start in 1999 with singer-songwriter Kelly McCune and dobro-guitar player Mike Stromberg, combining the solid twang of Kelly’s Oklahoma roots and Mike’s soulful swing on guitar and dobro. (www.border-radio.com)
(Note: Fur Dixon & Steve Werner, previously scheduled in this line-up, will not perform.)
Tix, $20. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED (because it will surely sell-out). Call 626-798-6236 between 10 am and 10 pm.

Sun, Aug 28, benefit / festival:
2-9 pm “LOREY’S BLUES FOR HOPE” benefit with performances by WUMBLOOZO, KELLY'S LOT, TERESA JAMES, BLUES STRAIGHT UP, THE DELGADO BROTHERS, R&B BOMBERS, THE SCORCH SISTERS, and their musical guests, at Joe’s Great American Bar & Grill, 4311 W Magnolia, Burbank 91505; 818-729-0805.
A blues lovin' crowd will gather to support one of their own, with music by seven blues bands and their special guests. They promise to entertain and remind everyone how important it is to help each other.
Lineup order is R&B BOMBERS, THE SCORCH SISTERS, BLUES STRAIGHT UP, KELLY'S LOT, THE DELGADO BROTHERS, TERESA JAMES, & WUMBLOOZO.
The event officially ends at 9 pm, but WUMBLOOZO will continue their set until 11 pm.
The cover charge is $10. Opportunity drawings will be held throughout the event. Every penny goes to The City Of Hope Women's Cancer Program. All the bands are donating their performances; all the items for drawings are donated by friends, family and folks who want to help Lorey and other cancer patients.
LOREY MAUER, president of The Los Angeles Blues Society and host to a long running backyard blues party in South El Monte, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. With no insurance to cover the treatments, fund raising became an essential focus.
KELLY ZIRBES, leader of the blues band KELLY'S LOT and a friend of Lorey's, offered to organize an event and raise the money to assist Lorey in paying for her treatments. Soon after, Lorey was informed that she was eligible for a Medi-Cal program called “Every Woman Counts,” and with that, the City of Hope said she would not see a bill. The program helps women under 65 that are under-insured. To show her appreciation, Lorey and Kelly decided to go forward with the event, with all proceeds donated to The City Of Hope.
Offers to play the event started streaming in and the first seven bands were chosen. There have been offers from at least twenty other bands to play and support Lorey, showing just how loved this woman is by the blues community.
For musician FRANCESCA CAPASSO of the SCORCH SISTERS, this is very personal. Francesca says, “As a four year breast cancer survivor I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and was paralyzed with fear because I was without insurance. Thank GOD for the BCCTP program, which covers uninsured women with breast and cervical cancer. Hospitals like UCLA/Olive View Medical Center and City of Hope accept and treat women in the BCCTP program. No woman should have to live in fear of being diagnosed with a female cancer because she has no insurance. I am honored and could not be prouder to participate in a fund raiser for such a wonderful hospital in honor of such a wonderful lady!"
TERESA JAMES, Blues Foundation nominee for “Best Contemporary Female Vocalist,” says, “Cancer has taken the lives of too many people that I love and I have seen the devastation that it can cause in the lives of the survivors. If there is anything that I can to help create a climate of hope or to lift the burden in any way, I am thrilled to do it – and if it involves hanging out and playing music with some of the best musicians in L.A., then I am all for it!”
Musician BIG MIKE RINCON of BLUES STRAIGHT UP adds, “Doing this gig is personal for me. My wife is a cancer survivor, so far, at least for three years. I lost my father and brother and several family members and friends to cancer. Some are still undergoing treatment. My wife and several people we know (including Lorey) are City of Hope patients. I can only say that the staff and attention given to patients is above and beyond any medical services I've encountered anywhere. Been there many times and what I witnessed was patients being treated with concern, dignity and respect.”
KELLY Z, leader of KELLY's LOT, says, “My brother was treated for a couple years at City of Hope during his battle with colon cancer. I was with him during many of his treatments and his surgery. I saw firsthand how wonderful they care for their patients."
J.D. SMITH, agent for the band WUMBLOOZO, has seen the miraculous work of City of Hope up close. In 2009, J.D.'s good friend Rich Votava was diagnosed with cancer. Because of the care and knowledge of that wonderful hospital, Rich is now cancer free.

TERESA JAMES earned a Blues Foundation nomination for “Best Contemporary Female Vocalist” for one of her recent CDs. She and her band have a funky, greasy Southern sound, from where Texas Blues meets New Orleans. A fan said, “She can sing like a bird or a bat out of hell.” (www.TeresaJames.com)
KELLY'S LOT plays roadhouse rockin' blues with a sound that is upbeat, heartfelt and fun. The band has been together since 1995 and has toured throughout the US and across Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands, recording a live CD in Brussels, Belgium. (www.KellysLot.com)
WUMBLOOZO is an all-originals band with songs that are somehow instantly recognizable. You'll find yourself singing or humming along. If you like songs like "Mustang Sally" you'll love WUMBLOOZO; if you like the early Stones, you'll love WUMBLOOZO, if you like the Animals, you'll love WUMBLOOZO. They were a huge hit at the “Concert for Haiti” in January, 2010. (www.Wumbloozo.com)
THE R&B BOMBERS are a blend of classic and contemporary American music styles that conjure up images of a Storyville speakeasy, the Cotton Club in Harlem, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. (www.RBBombers.com)
THE SCORCH SISTERS bring “a mix of jaw dropping virtuosity and down home raw, soul” to the blues. The "SISTAS" Alicia Morgan (lead vocals, keys), Kimberly "KC" Allison (guitar) and Francesca Capasso (lead vocals and percussion) pump out a blend of fierce, soulful vocals and seasoned, blazing instrumental prowess. (www.TheScorchSisters.com)
BLUES STRAIGHT UP is a blues-based ensemble with a big sound. Acclaimed as “The Finest Chicano blues band on the planet,” they are based in “North-East” Los Angeles (El Sereno). They bring originals, standards, electric blues, sassy female attitude with a touch of “Blues in Español.” (www.BluesStraightUp.com)
THE DELGADO BROTHERS will tell you they are driven by fierce independence, unified by family, and fortified by the brotherhood of music. For over 30 years, they've played and sang topical, anthem-worthy songs, complemented by call-to-action lyrics and East L.A. soul, while being embraced locally and globally by a wide spectrum of people undivided by culture, age or socioeconomic status. (www.DelgadoBrothers.com)

Today's benefit will become a music video, to extend the value of the benefit. CASEY REAGAN started a video company called MusicUCanSee because he wanted to put a spotlight on the blues. Casey will capture the performances for a video to help raise awareness for The City Of Hope.
Casey says, “MusicUCanSee Productions is proud to provide services for this event. We're honored to have been invited to participate in this concert and fully appreciate every artist and contributor who will be a part of this worthy cause. We love Lorey and have personal thanks to offer the City of Hope for EVERYTHING they do!!" (www.MusicUCanSee.com)

7 pm I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. play an all-acoustic show at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations number (NEW, May 2011) is 626-798-6236. (“The venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
They're easily one of THE best Americana bands in L.A., and maybe anywhere.
Jonny Whiteside wrote in the L.A. Weekly, "These freewheeling lords of California psych country approach their music as if it were a portal, an unseen threshold that, once crossed, promises a wholly unpredictable experience. The Hawks' singular style operates on an epic scale, exploring weird panoramas of hallucinatory metaphor with a sound as much traditional hillbilly as it is acceleratedlysergic-rock spontaneity. Any flight taken with I See Hawks In L.A. assures a view to startling new perspectives. Up, up and away." Tix, $18.

7 pm LAKE STREET DIVE and JOY KILLS SORROW, two acclaimed bands, at McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica; www.mccabes.com; 310-828-4497.
It's a night of modern pop-bluegrass and pop-soul.
About the Boston-based string band JOY KILLS SORROW, the Los Angeles Daily News wrote, “Subtle and snazzy, this new jack acoustic outfit merges bluegrass with jazz like it was the most natural combination in the world. Kind of like a more accessible, less-pleased-with-themselves Nickel Creek, these are virtuoso art folkies who understand the value of being just folks, too.” (3 1/2 stars).
CMT.com says, “It's a rare thing that a live performance is a strong representation of what you hear on a recording, and Joy Kills Sorrow reveals a fresh, hip take on traditional music.”
While JOY KILLS SORROW pays due homage to its bluegrass roots – its name is taken from WJKS, a radio station where the Monroe brothers’ show was broadcast in the 1930s – the band is acclaimed for its “rich and textured treatment of more contemporary material,” boasting a full arsenal of original songs. Their “radical new strain of folk music” is due September 13th on Signature Sounds on their new CD, “This Unknown Science.” Meanwhile, hear Joy Kills Sorrow's recent performance on NPR's “Mountain Stage” (one of those great shows we don't get on L.A. radio) at www.npr.org/2011/04/04/135129500/joy-kills-sorrow-on-mountain-stage.
Also on the night's bill...
“LAKE STREET DIVE [referring here to the band's self-titled CD] is a staggering, monumental disc… There is real power, real magic on display here—a chemistry between the interplay of band members and an appreciation for a blend of genres that congeals here into something that can be pinpointed to past influences, yet remains one of a kind… Lake Street Dive is a gorgeous, tasteful, close-knit band of musicians, and the sounds that they purvey are something celebratory to behold.” - Popmatters (9 stars).
“Once in a sweet blue moon, a recording arrives that is so fresh and appealing, there's no recourse but to spout clichés like 'once in a blue moon'… fine-tuned dynamics, gorgeous harmonies, and the escalating intensity of classic soul… How many ways can you say something is extraordinary?” - Blurt (9 out of 10 stars).
LAKE STREET DIVE are described as “at once jazz-schooled, DIY-motivated, and classically pop obsessed.” The Nnortheastern quartet is drummer Mike Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, vocalist Rachael Price, and trumpet-wielding guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson.

Tue, Aug 30:
6 pm Grammy nominees LISA HALEY & THE ZYDEKATS play the FREE Pasadena Senior Center Summer Concert Series (all ages welcome) outdoors in the Memorial Park Bandshell (aka Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts – Pasadena), 85 E Holly St, Pasadena 91103. These concerts are NOT listed with the Levitt offerings. This series offers cheap eats for sale, like $1.50 chili bowls and 50 cent watermelon slices. (Burgers with all the trimmings and hot dogs, too.) Or bring your own picnic (no alcohol allowed). They have chairs (unlike the Levitt series) or bring your beach chairs or blankets.
Tonight's act? They're California's top Cajun & zyedco band, and they usually spend the entire summer playing the circuit of big European festivals. They're just back from being the first American band to play the South Pacific Music Festival on Borneo (no kidding!) Lisa's trademark blue fiddle combines with accordion, guitar, bass, drums and rub-board (a wearable washboard vest used in Louisiana music). When they perform, plenty of happy feet take flight, on stage and off.
Lisa talks about and plays Cajun & zydeco music at www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbYuHlI2xxA.
Michael Lucas of the Los Angeles Times calls Lisa Hayley and the Zydekats’ music "a pop approach to Louisiana's sound...one-of-a-kind cornbread voice."
We find her marvelous, a world-class talent with a splendid and powerfully joyous voice. With her band, just back from a world tour that included the South Pacific Music Festival on Borneo (no kidding!), they play authentic, high-energy Americana / Louisiana / Pop / Folk music that is fun to sing along. It's an infectious repertoire, ranging from contemporary Louisiana music to 120-year-old traditional Cajun and zydeco songs, and they blend education with rollicking entertainment, teaching all ages about the rich history of Louisiana/Americana migration.
Lisa Haley & the Zydekats includes the talents of Gigi Rabe “Accordion Diva”, Chuck Alvarez, Andy Anders, and fine drummer Maria Martinez. In addition to live performance and recordings, they have collaborated on major motion pictures, including "Where the Red Fern Grows," “The Muppet Movie,” “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and "Man in the Moon."
It's a rare chance to see them perform for free.

Both tours were amazing, and the band got such a warm welcome in France, especially in Paris (where I grew up) and in Farges-les-Macon, a beautiful little village in Bourgogne where my grandmother lives and where I spent many of my summer vacations. September, 2011...
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
Yikes! Summer is ENDING!? ALREADY!? We begin the month with a benefit (Sep 1) worthy of your attention. And fortunately, there are still some fine festivals this month, with the 2nd annual CTMS “Fall Equinox Folk Music, Storytelling and Dance Festival” (Sep 10 & 11), and the always wonderful “Millpond Music Festival” near Bishop (Sep 16-18, in the beautiful Eastern Sierra country).
Plus, September brings the 17th annual “Harvest Festival of Dulcimers” (Sep 24), the “Orange International Street Fair” (Sep 3 & 4), the “International Talk Like A Pirate Day Weekend” (Sep 17, with lots of maritime music, in San Pedro), the annual “Castaic Days” (Sep 24).
There are some festivals we tell you about that happen elsewhere, like the annual mega “Rhythm & Roots Festival” (Sep 2-4, in Rhode Island), the annual “Snowy Range Music Festival” (Sep 2-4, with lots of blues music in Laramie, Wyoming), the annual “Mt. Hood Festival of the Forest” (Sep 11, in Oregon), the annual “Cascade Zydeco Dance Camp” (Sep 16-18, in Oregon), and the annual “Seafarer's Marketplace & Pirate Festival” (Sep 24 & 25, in Sacramento).
And of course, back-to-school sales or not, THE CAVALCADE OF ACOUSTIC CONCERTS mostly moves indoors, but just keeps on comin,' right here in Southern California!

Ken Graydon, the best history-based songwriter we ever knew, all-around wonderful man, well-known and admired throughout our community, passed away Saturday, July 30. Musician Bea Romano speaks for many when she says, “A unique soul, his heart-felt music will always be with us.”
The Guide re-printed the tribute by ROSS ALTMAN and added our own thoughts in “A SONG FROM ACROSS THE VOID – HONORING THE GREAT KEN GRAYDON.” That's still available at by itself, where you can add your comment, at
http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2011/08/song-from-across-void-honoring-great.html
The front page of the L.A. Daily News ran an article on Ken, his passing, and his importance to music, and you can read it at
www.dailynews.com/columnists/ci_18636425?IADID=Search-www.dailynews.com-www.dailynews.com
PHEE SHERLINE, hammer dulcimer virtuoso, guitarist, and Ken's widow, is conducting the memorial. The second hour will be devoted to a sing-along of Ken's wonderful songs. If you'd like to attend, RSVP to Phee at phee21@mac.com, or 760-723-7255.

6 & 8 pm (Two different shows, same Hawaiian musicians) OHANA - MAI NA KUPUNA MAI at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; info, www.coffeegallery.com; reservations number (NEW, May 2011) is 626-798-6236. (“The venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
Each show tell a different and unique musical tale. Two shows in one night celebrating the generations of the musical talents of HAWAII. Slack key guitarist-vocalist CHARLIE OYAMA explains it this way:
“We are planning to do two different shows, with instrumentals - guitars, ukuleles, bass, and assorted Hawaiian implements – vocals, with or without instrumental accompaniment / chanting, and perhaps dancing - hulas, not necessarily limited to females - all along the theme of passing one's culture, family history and lineage, folk tales, and general knowledge from generation to generation. Our title is: "OHANA - MAI NA KUPUNA MAI", and we interpret this as: "FAMILY - GENERATION TO GENERATION". The journey is one that we feel all peoples, races and nations should experience and continue. It is a journey filled with love, challenges, laughter, beauty, and joy, but most of all, Aloha ... We are seven musician-singers, three kupuna (grandparent generation), two makua (parent generation), and two opio/keiki (teen-ager/offspring generation).
The two shows are different, but celebrate one theme as exemplified in the name: 'OHANA: MAI NA KUPUNA MAI (FAMILY: GENERATION TO GENERATION). It expresses the desire to perpetuate the culture of all peoples by actively passing anything and everything one has learned from those who have gone before us to those who are coming after us. For us, the culture is Hawaiian, and the vessel we have chosen is music, although each person can choose his own vessel, we believe that the journey needs to be experienced by all peoples of all cultures.”
You'll hear original songs from Peter's musical voice that were important both politically and culturally to the Hawaiian Renaissance movement. More contemporary music that convey even younger voices ... a Beatles tune in Hawaiian, by Hawaiians. Hawaiian songs in English, and English songs in Hawaiian, and contemporary Hawaiian music ... and kupuna and mo'opuna together.
Tix, either show, $15.

8 pm MOYA BRENNAN and CORMAC DE BARRA, masters of the Irish harp, play the Caltech Folk Music Society series in Beckman Institute Auditorium on the Caltech Campus in Pasadena. Free parking is off Michigan Av, south of Del Mar. More on the show, the artists, and the series, at http://folkmusic.caltech.edu including info on upcoming shows.
KRISTINA OLSEN (www.kristinaolsen.net), previously scheduled, has been postponed until some time in 2012.
Nick Smith, co-booker of the series, tells us, “The silver lining in the cloud is that MOYA BRENNAN and CORMAC DE BARRA were looking for a local venue on the same day, and Voilà! They'll be coming to Caltech!”
MOYA BRENNAN is world renowned for for her angelic voice and harp playing, as a member of CLANNAD, one of Ireland's most prominent groups, and in various other settings, including work with the CHIEFTAINS, PAUL BRADY, and BONO. She is a strong link between traditional and modern Irish music.
CORMAC DE BARRA is a harpist, too, heavily involved in traditional Irish music and known for stretching the boundaries in many directions. He sings as well as plays, and the two have worked together in the past. Their recording, “Voices and Harps,” came out earlier this year and is attracting a lot of attention. This show is a fine opportunity to hear these two great musicians in an intimate setting. Tickets now on sale via website and phone number above. $20 adults, $5 for Caltech students and children.

Lisa Haley & the Zydekats include the talents of Gigi Rabe “Accordion Diva”, Chuck Alvarez, Andy Anders, and fine drummer Maria Martinez. In addition to live performance and recordings, they have collaborated on major motion pictures, including "Where the Red Fern Grows," “The Muppet Movie,” “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and "Man in the Moon."
