BARRY McGUIRE, creator of “Trippin’ The 60’s,” stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the Andy Williams Show as the gravelly voiced lead singer of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar." In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit, "Eve of Destruction," which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times.
Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with rock & roll, you get Barry McGuire.”
JOHN YORK, currently working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The Sixties" in addition to pursuing his solo career, is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned folk rock / country rock group, THE BYRDS. His vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John,) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band)……and many others.
More recently, the TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist SUMI FOLEY, and John has composed and recorded music for the lyrics of KIM FOWLEY on "West Coast Revelation." The duet "Redneck Ninja" highlights John's creative partnership with acclaimed songwriter PATRICK BRAYER. In 2007, John played concerts in Japan for the third time. Tix, either night, $20.

The New York Times recently proclaimed that Robert Ellis sounds "equally inspired by Jackson Browne and George Jones." Not a bad reference point for an artist only 22 years old. This Houston, Texas, native cut his teeth performing songs by artists ranging from Ray Price to Buck Owens to the Rolling Stones in various New York clubs. Remarkably, his songwriting ability is equal to his encyclopedic knowledge of these greats and it shines on his New West Records debut, Photographs. The young songwriter's second release is an impressive and diverse concept album split between five breathtaking folk songs and five soon-to-be country standards. And while it's difficult to pigeonhole Ellis, it's even harder to remember that he's barely just begun. Just added to the bill is Texas-born singer-songwriter Jarrod Dickenson, whose Ashes On The Ground has been raising eyebrows since its '09 release. $15.

A seven piece show. Moonshine is the natural evolution of the love that seven people have for great songs and great music-making. The original two members of the band, Stan DeWitt (guitar, vocals) and Joe Lamanno (bass, mandolin, accordion, vocals) met twenty years ago playing in a band led by two brothers, and soon became writing partners and 2/3 of the popular Southern California folk group, the Woodbys. After that band split, Stan and Joe continued to play together, supporting Stan's four solo CDs: Long Day's Journey (2001), Reaching Back (2002), Bend (2008) and Musical Moonshine (2009).
After the release of Bend, they were joined by Anna Ford (violin) and Shar Guardabascio (vocals.) Shortly after that, Claudia Fitzpatrick (cello) joined the group, and the songs were re-arranged to allow Joe to move to new instruments. When Darrell Barrett joined the group on percussion, the band was named Stan DeWitt and Moonshine.
But the final phase of Moonshine occurred when Shar began bringing in her songs, and the band was joined by talented songwriter & guitarist Nathan Conn. With three songwriters in the band, the emphasis on Stan was dropped. The result is a true musical collective of friends who love making music together. The songs range from sad to hilarious, poignant to silly, dark to light. One thing is for certain: this is music-making at it's most joyous. Tix, $15.

MICHELLE SHOCKED received her first international exposure in Europe, with her debut album, The Texas Campfire Tapes which was recorded at the Kerrville Folk Festival on a cassette recorder. Her break into U.S. came with the release of her 1988 album, Short Sharp Shocked on college radio rotations around the country, which was met with strong acclaim from listeners. The songs of Short Sharp Shocked are mostly about what it was like to grow up in rural Texas. Every song on this album is a gem.
She signed with Mercury in 1987. Captain Swing and Arkansas Traveler were recorded in 1989 and critically acclaimed. Captain Swing's style is not exactly swing, because it's also rock and roll. Arkansas Traveler includes a little swing, a little folk, and a bit of bluegrass.
Michelle recorded and independently distributed Kind Hearted Woman in 1994 after leaving Mercury. In 1995, she contributed an original song to the soundtrack for the film Dead Man Walking called "Quality of Mercy". In 1996, she released a studio version of an underground release of Kind Hearted Woman.
Starting in 2002 with the release of Deep Natural, Shocked established her own label, Mighty Sound. On May 12, 2009 she released her newest album, Soul of My Soul, on Mighty Sound. Shocked continues to make music as an independent artist and currently lives in Downtown Los Angeles.
STAN RIDGWAY, songwriter-guitarist and original Wall Of Voodoo vocalist, has taken a long and influential road. Raised in L.A., Ridgway began his love affair with Southwestern gothic 30 years ago as front man and co-founder of vanguard electro-art punks Wall of Voodoo, who he originally formed with the intention of scoring low-budget horror films.
Ridgway sang on the band's debut EP and first two albums, Dark Continent and Call of the West (which included the accidental MTV hit "Mexican Radio"). His darkly humorous, and richly cinematic musical tales of the ironies inside the American Dream have been compared to other classic songwriting iconoclasts like Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash and even hard boiled mystery writers like Raymond Chandler and Jim Thompson, as well as twisted film makers like David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino.
Over the years, Ridgway has performed live on stage with The Cramps, Brian Wilson, U2, Devo, The Pixies, Van Dyke Parks, The Residents, Dave Alvin, Pere Ubu, Peter Case, Bill Frisell, Los Lobos, Ry Cooder, Colin Hay, The Stranglers, The Handsome Family, XTC, The English Beat, Psychedelic Furs, The Clash, The Go Go's, Rickie Lee Jones, Sam The Sham, Johnny Thunders, and many others. 2011 brings his tour in support of his new solo album "Neon Mirage." His stage performance will highlight songs from his deep catalog of past classic solo albums and Wall Of Voodoo favorites. Stan Ridgway’s Pershing Square show will bring song, story and spoken word.

Observer’s “Chicken Corner” column, “I took (my daughter) to an all-ages, country rock, urban-country-rockabilly-cowpunk extravaganza called Roots Roadhouse…what a treat that was! Not to mention the graceful confectionery fusion of cultural… stuff, both intentional and not.”
This year, in addition to the artists above, catch country-rockers JACKSH*T (the McCabe's favorite group, staffed by musicians VAL McCALLUM, DAVEY FARRAGHER & PETE THOMAS); the punk bluegrass sound of OLD MAN MARKLEY; the lo-fi crazy stompin’ blues of RESTAVRANT; and former cowpunker (X) turned guitar-hero TONY GILKYSON.
Rounding-out the folk side of country will be THE BROKEN NUMBERS BAND, OLENTANGY JOHN, EASTSIDE HAYRIDE, THE DRIFTWOOD SINGERS and the folk music rooted in tradition from DAVID SERBY & THE DIRT POOR FOLKLORE.

The CACHE VALLEY DRIFTERS have been entertaining bluegrass fans since 1972. Gazry Mandell, when he booked them at his venue, wrote, “These three original members with their tight vocal harmonies, sizzling musicianship, and original arrangements of traditional and not so traditional songs are one of the most entertaining acts to ever get together and pick a few tunes. Hot flatpicking guitar, with sizzling mandolin solos, and solid bass backup have made these guys favorites among acoustic music fans for years.”
Bob Stane says, “For those of you not familiar with the Cache Valley Drifters, they are easily identified by their driving rhythm, beautifully textured ballads, unique acoustic arrangements, and signature vocal harmonies.”
They have been performing their music together for over 35 years and were the original back-up band for legendary folk artist Kate Wolf. The band consists of original founding member Bill Griffin (mandolin, guitar and vocals, since 1972), bass player and singer Wally Barnick (since 1975) and guitarist and mandolin player Mike Mullins, a pal since the early 70’s and band member since 1992.
They perform a wide range of material from folk to bluegrass, acoustic renditions of rock tunes and originals. While this description is directionally adequate, it is certainly far from complete. For starters, it fails to mention that these guys are a rare commodity; entertainers who are funny without ever trying to be. And secondly, now that Bill Griffin has moved to Hawaii, the band books but one (maybe two) California tours a year.
The group has become a mainstay at KCBX’s Live Oak Music Festival and can be enjoyed each Father’s Day morning at the Hot Licks Café at Live Oak Camp. Tix, $20.

CANNED HEAT rose to fame in the 1960s when Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite got together to make a new sound. Drawing on their encyclopedic knowledge of the Blues, Canned Heat specialized in updating obscure old recordings into hip modern tunes. Their Top-40 Country-Blues-Rock hit, On The Road Again became a Rock anthem around the world. Their hit Going Up The Country was adopted as the unofficial theme song for the famed documentary, Woodstock. Let’s Work Together hit the charts at #1 in thirty-one different countries around the globe.
COUNTRY JOE MacDONALD straddled two polar events of the 1960s, Woodstock and the Vietnam War. The first COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH album was released in 1965, just in time for the antiwar “Vietnam Day Teach-In” in Berkeley, CA. Four years later, Country Joe sang one of the great anthems of the era, “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag” to an audience of a half-million at the Woodstock Arts and Music Festival in 1969.
After forty-eight albums and more than four decades as a folk singer, Country Joe McDonald is still one of the best known names from the 60s.

DENNIS JONES, blues guitar hero “like a major hurricane that blows down everything in [his] path, changing the musical landscape.” Since Stevie Ray Vaughan perished tragically in 1990, the winds of change have been brief squalls at best – until now. Dennis Jones, with his third release, “Pleasure & Pain” on Blue Rock Records, has the explosive guitar power, voice and songs that makes the break out sound all audiences adore.
TOM WALBANK & THE AMBASSADORS are the concert's openers. Known for his fearless performance style on harmonic, slide guitar and vocals, Tom Walbank has opened for the likes of Charlie Musselwhite, T-Model Ford, Tommy Castro, Catfish Keith, Rod and Honey Piazza and Cephas and Wiggins and has received multiple awards for his work including Best Artist and Best Blues Band in the Tucson’s Annual TAMMIE Music Awards.
THE SHOEMAKER BROTHERS hail from the Pacific Northwest, the progeny of Celtic and Nordic roots, they look like a mix between Viking athletes and merry men of ancient lore but sing like angels and play rock music with a classical musician’s touch.

Martinez is a songwriter, singer and guitarist from Los Angeles who began playing dates and recording original songs while still in high school in the early '60s. Since then, Hirth has recorded several more albums of his own songs, played with the likes of DR. They're Matt Witler (mandolin, vocals), Kyle Tuttle (banjo, vocals), and Nick DiSebastion (guitar, vocals). Three of the nations finest bluegrass musicians who met while studying music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. They have played exstensively around Massachusettes and have gained a following in the Boston acoustic music scene. This is a rare opportunity to see this group on the West Coast. The GOC plays an exciting brand of bluegrass which is heavily influenced by jazz, country, and even classical music. Their sound is characterized by high speed instrumental virtuousity, tight harmonies, and innovative arrangements.
MATT WITLER has become a fixture on the Southern California acoustic music scene. He currently studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Matt is a protege of the great mandolin master, Evan Marshall. In addition to Evan, he has studied with Julian Lage, John McGann, Mike Marshall, David Grisman, Noam Pikelny, Bela Fleck, Scott Nygaard, Grant Gordy, and many more. Matt won the Advanced Mandolin division at the 2008 Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest and the Advanced Flatpick Guitar division at the 2011 Contest. He was also part of the 2011 Topanga winning band, the Absentees. Matt has performed at the Coffee Gallery with Scott Gates, Murphy's Flaw, Tim May, the Absentees and others.
KYLE TUTTLE, currently a sophomore at the prestigious Berklee School of Music, has been playing music for almost twenty years. He is one of the most progressive and exciting banjo players emerging on the acoustic music scene today. Rooted in bluegrass, he has acquired a strong jazz influence while attending Berklee. While at school, he has studied with Bela Fleck, Tony Trischka, Noam Pikelney, Bill Keith, John McGann, Bill Evans, Matt Glaser, and Pete Wernick. Kyle has toured exstensively and performed at festivals including the 2008 Bonnaroo Festival, and The Joe Val Bluegrass Festival.
Guitarist and vocalist NICK DiSEBASTIAN is quickly gaining recognition for his eclectic sound. A native of Lancaster, PA, Nick began playing the guitar at the age of ten. He grew up playing rock and roll and jazz. He was the guitarist of the Pennsylvania All-State Jazz Band. He currently lives in Boston, studying music at Berklee College of Music with a focus on bluegrass, gypsy jazz, and various other styles. He has performed at several music festivals including Hickory Fest and the Joe Val Bluegrass festival. Nick has studied with guitar greats Pat Martino, Guy Van Duser, and John McGann. Tix, $15.

Jim Connor learned the art of old tyme banjo playing from Uncle Arthur Kuykendall on Sand Mountain in Alabama. He quickly developed his own style and became deeply immersed in the rich musical culture, so much a part of the folks that lived in his community. His music has taken him from his humble home on the mountain to concert venues all over the world, performing with artists such as Barbara Streisand, Linda Ronstadt and John Denver. Jim was also a member of the New Kingston Trio from 1965 through 1974 and appeared as “Richard and Jim” on the Hootenanny Show. Show reunites teacher (Marshall) and former student (Gates). Mandolin master Evan Marshall, whose wizardry is unbelievable to watch, will bring his mastery of the instrument to the High Desert. Evan J. Marshall is the world’s premier solo mandolin virtuoso. By himself, he sounds like several of the world’s finest mandolinists performing together. His stylistic signature is classical, with strong influences from the Italian and American Folk traditions. Country guitar legend Chet Atkins called Evan “One of the few great musicians of our time.”
Inspired by Atkins and violinist Jascha Heifetz, Evan has created a uniquely recognizable approach to solo mandolin performance that combines bass lines, chords, rhapsodic runs and tremolo melodies. He started Classical violin studies at age seven, and added the mandolin at age 14.
In addition to solo performances throughout the country, Evan has been a Featured Guest Artist in Pops concerts with a number of Symphony Orchestras, including Houston, Phoenix, Long Beach, Grand Rapids, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Jacksonville, and Pensacola.
Two of his solo mandolin recordings have been released by Rounder Records: Evan Marshall Is the Lone Arranger, which the Washington Post labeled "truly dazzling," the Raleigh-Durham Independent called "superhuman," and the Fresno Bee called "mind-boggling"; and Mandolin Magic, which the St. Paul Pioneer Press applauded for "a stunning mastery of interpretation." Evan also has recorded three solo CDs for his own label, Mandolin Conservatory.
In 1995, Evan made his first appearance on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. Between 1993 and 2005 Evan was a Featured Soloist at Disneyland, performing his signature William Tell Overture: Finale for about two million visitors to the famous Golden Horseshoe Theater during the course of 10,000 shows. He has performed and taught at numerous regional and international conferences for mandolinists, who hold Evan in particularly high regard; Don Stiernberg has referred to Evan as “The Michael Jordan of the mandolin.”
His student and now Mandolin Phenom Scott Gates is 19 years old and has taken the mandolin world by storm. Scott Gates is as close to a musical Prodigy on the mandolin as you will ever meet. Scott has been a mainstay at Bluegrass festivals for many years and holds a special place in his heart for these festivals and the people he sees year after year. This especially holds true for the kids he meets with that same fire to play music in their eyes that he had as a young boy.
Having performed all over the country and with artists as varied as John and Nathan McEuen, Steve Martin, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kenny Loggins and a virtual who's who of bluegrass players, Scott has started writing music of his own. Scott appeared last year on the Ellen Show with Steve Martin and he recorded with Kenny Loggins on his soon-to-be-released family album, which was picked up by Disney. Scott recently appeared on an episode of the FX Channel hit tv show Justified opposite Actor Timothy Olyphant . Having started on piano at 3 years of age and mandolin at the age of 8, Scott had studied under Evan Marshall for 6 years, David Grisman, Chris Thile and a host of others learning the Bluegrass, Celtic, Rock, Classical, Jazz and Blues styles from the masters themselves.
Scott formed his first band Pacific Ocean Bluegrass at the age of 13. He then performed with his own Scott Gates band for several years and then became a member of the touring "Nathan McEuen Band. Most recently Scott has formed the Salty Suites, a roots and bluegrass band and has been playing originals and standards to appreciative audiences all over the Southwest. A three time winner at the prestigious Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest as well as a two time National IBMA youth all star, Scott is also in great demand as a session player through out the country and all this by the ripe old age of 19.

These concerts are NOT listed with the Levitt offerings. This series offers cheap eats for sale. Bring picnics (no alcohol allowed) and beach chairs or blankets. California's top Cajun & zyedco band, they usually spend the entire summer playing the circuit of big European festivals. Lisa's trademark blue fiddle combines with accordion and rubboard and plenty of happy feet take flight, on stage and off. It's a rare chance to see them perform for free.

Hear Doe in discussion about his new solo album “Keeper,” his first record since 2007’s acclaimed “A Year in the Wilderness.” Produced alongside long-time collaborator Dave Way (Fiona Apple, Macy Gray) at Los Angeles’ The Way Station and New Monkey Studios, the record also features vocals by Patty Griffin, Jill Sobule and Cindy Wasserman. In addition to an inside-look at the new album, Doe will also discuss his role as a founding member of the seminal L.A. punk rock outfit X, his country spin-off band The Knitters and his several television and movie appearances, including playing the role of Jeff Parker in the television series Roswell. Through artistic interaction, we create opportunities to dissolve misunderstandings, break down stereotypes and increase respect for one another.”
