Fri, May 4; a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS at the Greek Theatre in L.A. Tix, $30, on sale now. They were one-third of the 2011 “Railroad Revival Tour” with OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW and MUMFORD & SONS. They hold their own among the new-fangled old-timey string bands, though they don’t fit that mold themselves, given their energetic rock elements, mix of electric instruments, and Sharpe’s ’90s-style mosh pit diving / crowd surfing.
+
Tonight launches their nationwide tour and tomorrow night, the band headlines the Santa Barbara Bowl for the first time. Tix now available at http://edwardsharpe.tickets.musictoday.com.
+
EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS formed in Los Angeles in 2007. They released their debut album, ‘Up From Below,” in July 2009 on Community Music. The album has sold over 275,000 copies in the U.S., and charted on iTunes for 69 straight weeks. With its unique and universal appeal, their hit single "Home" soared to over 775,000 downloads. After intensive touring throughout 2009-2011, including hit appearances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Coachella. In March 2011, the troupe's lead singer ALEX EBERT released his solo debut album, “Alexander,” on Community Music, written and recorded during breaks from being on tour with the band. The album includes ten brand new songs that Alexander wrote and played entirely himself. In April 2011, the band embarked on the "Railroad Revival Tour" with Mumford & Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show where they traveled exclusively in vintage railcars across the American Southwest for a week, playing concerts at unique outdoor locations along the route. Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros actively support several charitable causes, including Water Wells For Africa, Charity Water, APJ Now, Hope Campaign and Voice Project.

+
Kenny Blackwell and Dorian Michael play whatever moves them. Old-timey, Blues, Jazz, Brazilian, if they like it, they play it. For the past eight years they have been putting a spontaneous spin on the music that interests them.
+
Mandolinist/guitarist Kenny Blackwell studied with Jethro Burns before moving to California where he joined fiddler Richard Green’s band in ’93. His mandolin and guitar work have been heard in TV and movie scores. He was a constant member of the famed Laurel Canyon Ramblers.
+
Guitarist DORIAN MICHAEL has played in about every style and in every type of work situation a blue collar musician could hope for. He grew up as a folky blues kid. After years of honky-tonk electric guitar followed by concentrating on solo fingerstyle guitar this project is “a real horizon broadener.”
+
FRED SOKOLOW is a renowned musician who specializes in guitar and banjo and spans every field including pop, folk and jazz. He does seminars in both banjo and guitar and has several CD's to his credit. His gigs are diverse and include Harrah's in Las Vegas, Tahoe and Reno to Donte's Jazz Club and McCabe's to name just a few. Bluegrass fests often feature a western act or two, and the same happens in reverse. Festival goers always respond with plenty of approval. So why not mix ’em and say so? This is a fine lineup. 6 pm First Annual “LOS LOBOS’ CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVAL” brings LOS LOBOS, NEKO CASE & ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO, plus X and MARIACHI EL BRONX, at the Greek Theatre in L.A.
+
Los Lobos, the beloved Grammy®-winning band from East L.A., have announced their first annual music festival to be held in their hometown of Los Angeles at the iconic Greek Theatre on May 5, 2012. The 1st Annual Los Lobos Cinco de Mayo Festival will feature performances by preeminent LA bands Los Lobos, X and Mariachi El Bronx, with special guests Neko Case and Alejandro Escovedo joining Los Lobos on stage. The festival was born out of a desire to have a branded event for the community-conscious band to celebrate food, culture and music in their hometown. It promises to be an unforgettable night, taking place during the opening week of the Greek Theatre’s new season.
+
“We are happy and proud to announce the 1st Annual Los Lobos Cinco de Mayo Festival,” says Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. “After discussing it for what seems like years it's amazing to actually see it come to fruition, and it's made all the more special by having our great friends X, Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo and Mariachi El Bronx join us. We think it's going to be a joyous and amazing evening of music.”
+
Los Lobos is currently on tour in support of “Tin Can Trust,” an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived. Los Lobos is a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots.

Bluegrass fests often feature a western act or two, and the same happens in reverse. Festival goers always respond with plenty of approval. So why not mix ’em and say so? This is a fine lineup. Of course, one act, BLUEGRASS ETC, has been freely mixing music of both genres in its live sets for years, and they’ve built a fiercely loyal fan base doing that. This’ll be a fun weekend.

7 pm KAYE & TED RODDEN at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations, 626-798-6236 (call 10 am-10 pm, 7 days). Kaye is a San Francisco Bay Area vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. She performs as an acoustic folk duo with her husband Ted on guitar, vocals and mandolin. Their collaborative songwriting reflects elements of folk, country, bluegrass-gospel, rock and roll and the blues. This rootsy mix of influences comes across in a sparse and spacious style reminiscent of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. The beauty of their blended vocal harmonies paired with Ted's eclectic leads on guitar bring you back to a quiet intimacy of music that can take you there. Kaye and Ted put on a tasty little show! Big time following in this area.

Today is Golden Spike Day
+
On this day in 1869, atop a windswept rise north of Utah’s Great Salt Lake, the rails of the Central Pacific, from Sacramento, met the rails of the Union Pacific, from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the first transcontinental railroad was completed.
+
The journey to California from the states “Back East,” which had required months by overland wagon train or oceangoing ship around Cape Horn, suddenly took mere days.
+
It was the wonder of the age, comparable in its time to the Apollo moon landing a hundred years later. One of the greatest achievements of the steam-powered Industrial Revolution, it brought the immediate end to the Pony Express, literally and symbolically.
+
The railroad made everyplace accessible, and resources could be tapped to flow East. That brought the Gilded Age of rich industrialists – the Robber Barons – the Nineteenth Century’s One-Percenters who owned the members of Congress and had everything their way. As the biggest of big business, the railroads would bring precise surveys and carefully defined land boundaries and ownership. Rapid population of the prairie by homesteaders – largely immigrant farmers – and an explosion of fences and barbed wire and towns and cities followed, supplanting the brief era of British-financed cattle ranches and the great cattle drives.
+
And it all brought the final end to the wandering herds of millions of buffalo (bison) from the vast Great Plains, and a hastening of the tragic end of the cultures and livelihood of far-flung nations of Native American Indians who depended on the buffalo and seasonal migration.
+
The coming of the railroad changed everything. It gave us our first great heroes of the industrial age, with brave locomotive engineers who died in collisions with their hands on the throttles, trying to save their passengers. It gave us daredevil brakemen who raced back and forth on icy rooftops, tightening individual car brakes to prevent catastrophe. It gave us switchmen who stood with dim lanterns in blizzards or sandstorms. It gave us track layers who braved wilderness hazards to make everything possible for everyone else.

With it came a rich legacy of folk-Americana railroad, train, and hobo songs that we still sing today, and the occasional modern song of remembrance, like the Phil Collins / Genesis “Driving the Last Spike” from 1991. It reaches a long way back, and includes 20th century standards like the “Wabash Cannonball” and the “City of New Orleans.” All are part of the same rich legacy.
+
In its time, it gave hard work to those who first sang those songs of the rails as the soundtrack of their pioneering employment and achieving upward economic mobility. A railroad job was a chance at the rising middle class, especially as the jobs became unionized, bringing early workplace safety regulations and wages that enabled railroaders, disproportionately, to send their kids to college.
+
And along the way, it closed the frontier. The Wild West and its vast, free, open spaces would be gone within two short decades of the Golden Spike.
+
Because of, and in spite of, all of it, we raise a glass on May 10, a toast to the mostly-forgotten folks who actually built the Pacific Railroad into the vast unknown. To the reviled Irish track builders of the U.P. from the East, and the reviled Chinese builders of the C.P. from the West, salute. You were building more than you could imagine.
+
COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS: At Los Angeles Union Station on May 12, you can enjoy the 5th annual “NATIONAL DAY OF THE TRAIN,” presented by Amtrak and others in and out of the rail industry. TODAY, on the exact site of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit in northern Utah, the National Park Service re-enacts the driving of the Golden Spike, as they do every May 10th, complete with actors in authentic garb, period music, and exact operating replicas of the two brilliantly colorful steam locomotives. Go to Promontory if you can – it’s America’s best annual obscure historic event.

Two of the most highly respected, passionate and widely covered American singer/songwriters bring their gifts to the CGB for an unforgettable evening of emotional power. These veteran performers cut their teeth on traditional American Folk-Jazz. It's in their DNA. But each has gone on to develop a style uniquely his own.
+
LIND: His 1966 mega hit, "Elusive Butterfly" helped shape and define Folk-Rock. His songs have been recorded by more than 200 top artists, including Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Cher and Dolly Parton. But nothing equals the power of watching him deliver his own songs. Critic Walter Savinski summed it up this way: “Come and see why this engaging poet / guitarist / philosopher / singer / wise-ass has endured in the sometimes-cruel and always-fickle music business for more than 40 years. But be prepared to feel emotions you may not have let yourself feel in a while – feelings that may scare you a little. His songs hit the heart like a wrecking ball!”
+
O'KEEFE: He rocked the music world in 1972 when his "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" exploded onto the charts. His songs have garnered covers by Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Cab Calloway and countless others. Danny's music continues to evolve, inspiring famed novelist Tom Robbins to say, “As darkly seasoned with raw experience as it is brilliantly inlaid with poetic insight, O'Keefe's work this past decade constitutes the most moving musical meditations since Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind. Unblinking, hammer-hard, love-wise and haunting, these songs stay alive in the mind and the heart long after the laser has moved on."

The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events, in ever-UPDATED EDITIONS will continue to bring you more news of concerts, club gigs, workshops, benefit shows, festivals and more (always more -- as we dig out from beneath the incoming mountains of email telling us about it, so we can organize it and tell YOU about all of it).
.
We’ll keep covering the world of current acoustic music happenings and bringing you "heads up" notices to buy advance tix for shows likely to sell-out – and lots more.

We’ll continue to tell you what acoustic musicians are doing, in the studio, on the stage, and as activist / artists seeking to improve things for all of us. We’ll tell you about the growing number of radio & TV shows with live acoustic performances (when it’s radio, it’s available mostly on the web, of course, since the Guide is published from acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.) .
.
And, as Spring blooms and the 2012 FESTIVAL SEASON progresses, we’ll bring you news and reviews of the many acoustic music festivals happening near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere.
.
As always, thanks for making the journey with us. With your help, the road goes on forever (even if we can’t afford the gas anymore to find out where it goes)! .
