The second is about the anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915, a pivotal event that brought huge changes to the world and the outcome of World War I – with some thoughts on how history is filled with examples of seemingly small acts of violence that bring profound consequences.

Sat, May 12 FESTIVAL; a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
5th annual “NATIONAL DAY OF THE TRAIN,” all day at Los Angeles Union Station. Free.

This is a big deal, presented by Amtrak and others in and out of the rail industry, with several stages of live music, plenty of new and historic railroad equipment open for tours, including a large steam locomotive, lots of activities for kids, food and other vendors, travel and model train exhibits, and the cavernous spaces of Union Station and adjacent gardens alive and bustling with all of it.
+
For extra fun and to avoid expensive and crowded downtown parking, ride Amtrak or Metrolink or the surface or subway light rail to get there.
+
It happens every year on the Saturday closest to May 10, “Golden Spike Day.” What’s it about? On May 10, on the exact site of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit in northern Utah, the National Park Service re-enacts the driving of the Golden Spike, complete with actors in authentic garb, period music, and exact operating replicas of the two brilliantly colorful steam locomotives. We told you before that event, “go to Promontory if you can – it’s America’s best annual obscure historic event.”

On that May 10, in 1869, atop a windswept rise north of Utah’s Great Salt Lake, the rails of the Central Pacific, from Sacramento, met the rails of the Union Pacific, from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the first transcontinental railroad was completed.
+
The journey to California from the states “Back East,” which had required months by overland wagon train or oceangoing ship around Cape Horn, suddenly took mere days.
+
It was the wonder of the age, comparable in its time to the Apollo moon landing a hundred years later. One of the greatest achievements of the steam-powered Industrial Revolution, it brought the immediate end to the Pony Express, literally and symbolically.
+
The railroad made everyplace accessible, and resources could be tapped to flow East. That brought the Gilded Age of rich industrialists – the Robber Barons – the Nineteenth Century’s One-Percenters who owned the members of Congress and had everything their way. As the biggest of big business, the railroads would bring precise surveys and carefully defined land boundaries and ownership. Rapid population of the prairie by homesteaders – largely immigrant farmers – and an explosion of fences and barbed wire and towns and cities followed, supplanting the brief era of British-financed cattle ranches and the great cattle drives.
+
And it all brought the final end to the wandering herds of millions of buffalo (bison) from the vast Great Plains, and a hastening of the tragic end of the cultures and livelihood of far-flung nations of Native American Indians who depended on the buffalo and seasonal migration.
+
The coming of the railroad changed everything. It gave us our first great heroes of the industrial age, with brave locomotive engineers who died in collisions with their hands on the throttles, trying to save their passengers. It gave us daredevil brakemen who raced back and forth on icy rooftops, tightening individual car brakes to prevent catastrophe. It gave us switchmen who stood with dim lanterns in blizzards or sandstorms. It gave us track layers who braved wilderness hazards to make everything possible for everyone else.
+
With it came a rich legacy of folk-Americana railroad, train, and hobo songs that we still sing today, and the occasional modern song of remembrance, like the Phil Collins / Genesis “Driving the Last Spike” from 1991. It reaches a long way back, and includes 20th century standards like the “Wabash Cannonball” and the “City of New Orleans.” All are part of the same rich legacy.

Music of the Era
Smithsonian Folkways has several albums of vintage train and hobo songs, and the music-and-narration boxed sets by Keith & Rusty McNeill (available online and in National and State Park gift shops) include “Western Railroad Songs.”
+
In its time, the transcontinental railroad gave hard work to those who first sang those songs of the rails as the soundtrack of their pioneering employment and achieving upward economic mobility. A railroad job was a chance at the rising middle class, especially as the jobs became unionized, bringing early workplace safety regulations and wages that enabled railroaders, disproportionately, to send their kids to college.
+
And along the way, it closed the frontier. The Wild West and its vast, free, open spaces would be gone within two short decades of the Golden Spike.
+
Because of, and in spite of, all of it, we raise a glass every May 10th, a toast to the mostly-forgotten folks who actually built the Pacific Railroad into the vast unknown. To the reviled Irish track builders of the U.P. from the East, and the reviled Chinese builders of the C.P. from the West, salute. You were building more than you could imagine.

MAY 15th WAS A PIVOTAL DAY IN HISTORY IN 1915 –
a look at how it influenced events decades later, and how it still resonates for us today –
if we’re willing to think about what it means…

On this date in 1915, the British-registered transatlantic passenger liner RMS LUSITANIA was struck by one torpedo fired from a German submarine, U-Boat U-20. Lusitania was rounding the Old Head of Kinsale on Ireland’s south coast, nearing the end of her voyage from New York to England.
+
Britain and Germany were in the midst of World War I. Though the Articles of War forbade attacks on civilian ships, Germany had bought ads in American newspapers before the Lusitania sailed, declaring that British liners were believed to be carrying war materiel and were subject to attack. Indeed, the British Registry of ships had classified her as a Reserve Cruiser, a naval term.

The Lusitania had been the speed queen of the North Atlantic, holder, multiple times, of the Blue Riband as the ship making the fastest crossing.
+
Pride of the Cunard Line, Lusitania was the largest ship in the world when she was launched in 1906. At 31,550 gross register tons (GRT) she was 787 feet long and 87 feet wide, a heavyweight champ of the fierce, decade-long, competition to be the biggest and fastest. Five years into her life, Lusitania would be eclipsed by the rival White Star Line’s OLYMPIC, and then, ever so briefly, by its larger sister TITANIC. But, after striking an iceberg while on her maiden voyage, Titanic sank three years and one month to the day before Lusitania was lost. (Titanic was a giant, ninety-five feet longer than the massive Lusitania; Titanic weighed 46,328 gross tons, and was 882.75 feet long, 92.5 feet wide.)

The Titanic had taken about three hours to sink, with her engineers doing all they could to slow her sinking, and none surviving because they did so. The Lusitania was gone in less than 20 minutes, after the U-Boat’s torpedo or the immediate second explosion – probably caused by coal dust in her adjacent fuel bunker – destroyed steam pipes that prevented her internal watertight doors from being closed.

Both sinkings took most of their passengers with them and left immeasurable emotional scars on those who survived.
+
Lusitania’s passengers included many women and children who drowned, including Americans. The death toll was 1,198, including 128 Americans. 761 people survived, picked up by hastily-launched boats from the Irish Coast. (By comparison, 1523 perished on Titanic, while 713 survived, picked up by RMS Carpathia.) But the shock and horror of the torpedo attack drove public perceptions, outweighing even the numbers of dead. Lusitania’s loss to a U-Boat attack turned much of the American nation and the world against Germany. Before that, America had taken pains to remain neutral. Even a year later in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson won reelection on the slogan, “He kept us out of war.” But emotions simmered and there were additional provocations. In 1917, President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany.

The Musical Legacy
Quickly, we got songs that are still part of the American songbook, including George M. Cohan’s “Over There,” and one still covered by today’s artists, “How You Keep ‘Em Down on the Farm, After They’ve Seen Pa-ree?” and “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag,” and “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now,” and the song that would become the US Army’s anthem to the present day (slightly modified), “As the Caissons Go Rolling Along.”

As with any war, the popular music of its time both reflected and ignored what was happening. The 60s and Vietnam provide the example of the time richest in music, driven by this phenomenon. Throughout the 20th century, music helped everyone get through it, by singing heartening songs, or escaping reality as best as possible.

The infusion of American troops, the “Doughboys” and Marines, and America’s productive capacity, would force an end to the war in the Armistice of November 11, 1918. America’s victorious allies, the British, French, and Belgians, followed President Wilson’s blueprint for the Treaty of Versailles – until they added crushing war debts to what Germany had to pay them in reparations – while they adopted Wilson’s design for a League of Nations, intended to prevent another war. But the U.S. Senate rejected all of it in the kind of mindlessly reckless political power struggle that we would easily recognize today. America’s refusal to take a seat at the table as a world leader would cause the eventual collapse of the League of Nations, and allow Hitler’s Nazi Germany to rise militarily in the 1930s, conquering most of Europe in retaliation for Germany’s loss of World War I.

The First World War had been seen as “The War to End All Wars,” and “The Great War,” after claiming 15 million dead and 20 million wounded. Tragically, it was not “great” enough to prevent the deaths of another 60 million people in World War II. (Over 2.5% of the world’s human population perished in WWII.)

What lessons from that distant “Great War” are relevant to us today? One U-Boat captain, firing one torpedo? Or one Serbian nationalist, assassinating one man, the Archduke Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on a bridge in Sarajevo, in the act that started that war? Either way, there is an enduring statement: history is full of examples of seemingly small acts of violence that bring profoundly tragic consequences.
