Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Friday the 13th and a Woody’s Birthday Weekend Preview

.
WOODY GUTHRIE’s birthday is Saturday, and he would be 100 years old if he were still with us. (What’re we saying, he IS still with us, anywhere the oppressed need encouragement.)
+
So, why the partial edition? Waaaay too much is happening, plain and simple. But there’s nothin’ plain or simple about Friday’s musical offerings! Here’s tonight’s OVERFLOWING ABUNDANCE of live performances and folk-Americana on TV. And we have a heads-up preview of Woody commemorative events this weekend.
+
Does triskaidekaphobia play a part in any of this? (That’s the fear of the number 13, and by implication, of Friday the 13th). Nah. WE aren’t staying home and missing all this great music!
+
A complete new edition will appear here as soon as we can finish it. Hence, MUCH MORE, coming soon!

The dancing is fun, even if the tunes go on endlessly. Greeks are usually very tolerant of people who don’t know their dances, but who want to try anyway. The food is great, and who can beat the Ouzo?

.
Fri, Jul 13, in Ventura Co, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
8 pm WHISKEY CHIMP, a Southern Cal favorite, plays a rare local show for the “FIRESIDE CONCERT SERIES” at Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Rd, Newbury Park. Hosted By Bob Kroll, sponsored by Conejo Recreation & Park District.
+
The members of this band are on tour with other bands much of the year – ’purt near constantly, including performing on national TV. So it's just plain difficult to get them together anymore. But, voila! – Bob Kroll did, for a special summer edition of this series (it usually runs fall-to-spring).
+
WHISKEY CHIMP takes its audience on a genre-bending roller coaster of musical emotions. Starting from very traditional bluegrass, they may venture deep into punk rock roots or move into a rousing Mariachi ballad. Whiskey Chimp’s repertoire of refreshing original material and choice cover songs delightfully violate all the rules of engagement. Their simian stage antic and electrifying performances keep audiences entertained throughout the night. From their first song to their encore, it is very apparent these guys are having a blast.
+
They are CHRIS CAIRNS on bluegrass banjo; TOBY EMERY on punk vocals and mandolin; BILL FLORES (a seemingly bottomless talent) on accordion / clarinet / Dobro / fiddle / guitar; STANLEY GONZALES on vocals and rock-n-roll ukulele; BRENT HARDING on vocals and slapping upright bass; MARK PARSON on Cajun-style fiddle and vocals; and CORY SCRIVNER on roots and folk-based vocals and guitar. Featuring tight four-part harmony and blazing instrumentals, “The Chimp,” as they are affectionately known by their fans, leave their audiences clamoring for more. Fasten your seat belts as you witness a mesmerizing musical experience.
+
Tix, $13, at the door. Adults only, no children. Arrive early for a good seat.

Fri, Jul 13, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
8 pm THE SCARLET FURIES & BELVEDERO play a double-bill at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
THE SCARLET FURIES bring the rootsy romance of American Southern gothic angels and demons, wrapped in a veil of rich harmonies and anything with strings. This 5 piece folk outfit melds complex acoustic layers with unshakable melodies and vocal arrangements behind stunning powerhouse songstress Raleigh Holmes. An alt folk / roots band, THE SCARLET FURIES is fronted by beautiful young singer-songwriter Raleigh Holmes. They have been doing lots of shows and festivals for the last year with folks like Leon Russell, The Subdudes, John Waite, and Kenny Loggins, and have a new CD "Dark Clad Company", produced by Rusty Anderson of Paul McCartney's band and mastered by Gavin Lurssen (triple Grammy winner with T Bone Burnette), and a new soundtrack for the hit game Gray Matter just released. Here's a peice of a review from The Alternate Root.
+
"There is a gentleness and quiet beauty to THE SCARLET FURIES recent release, ‘Dark Clad Company’. Raleigh Holmes vocals whisper promises (“All or Nothing”) and say goodbye (“Gone Tomorrow”) with a sweetness that leave a smile and a glass half full memory. Lyrics and story lines, like on “Young Goodman Brown”, lend an age to the songs. The dust of time works well with the instrumentation and THE SCARLET FURIES natural ability to add freshness. They reincarnate tradition and the resulting sound never shows age. They take a modern classic track by Nirvana (“Heart Shaped Box”) and replace the grunge of Seattle with forest freshness more in line with the folk side of Americana. "— The Alternative Root.
+
Plus,
BELVEDERO is a band from Southern California, and whether labeled alt country, Americana, new folk, East Nashville or some other term, the five veteran musicians of the roots music scene in Los Angeles & Orange County bring original music. It’s been called "inspired... just in time for audiences seeking a true joining of singer-songwriter sensibilities with just enough twang to appeal to the country set and enough gritty attitude to appeal to the latest crop of punk rockers."
+
Chief songwriter, guitarist and singer Troy Meier is joined by Christopher Rex Harvey on pedal steel duties, Tom Almanzar on lead guitar, Tony Sanborn on drums and Johan Johanson on bass. Each bring their own unique influences ranging from Almanzar's rockabilly guitar chores with the Amber Foxx Band to Johanson's guitar duties in famed Brit-Punk stalwarts, the U.K. Subs. Harvey and Sanborn slugged their way through some of SoCal's most famous honky tonks in hard-working country outfits. Meier ties the knot relying on the grit and rasp of his tenured blues background.
