THE WRECKING CREW were the studio musicians behind some of the biggest hits in the 1960s and '70s. From "Be My Baby" to "California Girls;" "Strangers in the Night" to "Mrs. Robinson," "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'" to "Up, Up and Away;" and from "Viva Las Vegas" to "Mr. Tambourine Man," the group dubbed The Wrecking Crew played on all of them. Six years in a row in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Grammy for "Record of the Year" went to Wrecking Crew member recordings.

"THE WRECKING CREW," a documentary film produced and directed by DENNY TEDESCO, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist TOMMY TEDESCO, has played around the world in the festival circuit with over a dozen awards and rave reviews and other accolades.

The film includes wonderful interviews with BRIAN WILSON, CHER, NANCY SINATRA, HERB ALPERT, GLEN CAMPBELL, ROGER McGUINN, GARY LEWIS, DICK CLARK, AL JARDINE, PETER TORK, and MICKY DOLENZ, as well as many of the Crew members themselves.

A labor of love by director Tedesco, the film is ultimately a love letter to the legacy of his late father and musician friends in the Crew. Documenting the work of musicians on such iconic songs, however, can be both cost-prohibitive and -- the biggest barrier -- distribution-prohibitive. According to the American Federation of Musicians, the film may have one of the largest soundtracks of any film in history, with 131 music cues. With songs by FRANK SINATRA, NANCY SINATRA, THE MONKEES, THE BYRDS, THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS, SONNY & CHER, THE BEACH BOYS, and dozens of others, the cost of licensing the music for the film is estimated at more than $300,000.

With the help of social media and donations, the film has made great progress raising the necessary money to pay the industry extortion racket and allow the release to become closer to reality, while other films of this nature never make it to the public.

Thus, every screening is “a special screening” and a fund-raiser to bring "The Wrecking Crew" nearer to a real release date.

Got Progressive talk radio? Not so much. San Diegans have become accustomed to the conservative stylings of locally-owned 760 KFMB and the not-so-locally owned KOGO 600. When you’re looking for news in that city, there are no other choices. You’re stuck with sensationalist, and sometimes maniacal ramblings of Rush Limbaugh and Roger Hedgecock. But for a brief while, San Diego did have a progressive talk radio station to call its own: 1360 KLSD. “Save KLSD: The Film” is a documentary about how corporate influence corrupts government regulation, limits the free flow of information, and adversely effects American democracy. Over the course of four and a half years, the producers attended media reform conferences, conducted research, and filmed interviews and presentations by leading media reform experts and commentators, including Amy Goodman, Bill Moyers, Robert Reich, Van Jones, Phil Donahue, and Ed Schultz. The film is narrated by Bree Walker and Jon Elliott. It is produced by Jennifer Douglas and Jon Monday, and directed by Jon Monday.

A discussion follows the film, exploring grassroots efforts -- including attendance at FCC hearings where Progressive stations have their licenses up for renewal and what can be done to keep other stations from abandoning their progressive format. One of the narrators (and occasional TPA Film Night attendee), BREE WALKER, has been invited to lead the discussion.

There will be a cheese / veggie potluck (no alcohol) at 7:45 pm, with the film screening at 8 pm. A discussion follows the screening.

The term "Penny University" comes from the 18th Century name given to the Coffee houses of London where, for a penny, you could sip coffee and listen to the news of the day. The band from Palm Desert, California intentionally misspells their name for strategic reasons. Formed in 2010 as an original trio led by endorsed Guitarist Michael Anthony Gagliardi, Craig Brown - drums and Ted Walker on bass. Then added percussionist, Rene Almodovar. Creating a new genre called "trans-fusion" was a must in order to classify the intermingling styles of Jazz, Fusion, Latin, and Global rhythms in their songs. Their sound is full of catchy melodic instrumental hooks and grooves that allows their music to not be limited to either age or genre. Music is emotion, and it should translate - without words - the true feeling of the song. There are no language barriers in instrumental music. No politics, no biased points of view, or rhetoric.

Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries was a troubled, tumultuous place. The old Gaelic order had been shattered by the English invaders, and the poets, the bards and the harp players were set out to walk the roads from place to place in search of shelter and patronage. Yet this dark period of Irish history produced, in Turlough O'Carolan, a Celtic harper and composer of such brilliance, grace and character that he is to this day regarded as the country's greatest and most beloved musician.

In "O'Carolan's Farewell to Music," Patrick Ball tells the blind harper's story through the character of poet and fellow harper, Charles MacCabe, O'Carolan's life-long friend and traveling companion. Through MacCabe's eyes and 14 of Carolan's tunes played on the rare wire-strung harp, we are drawn into this storm-tossed chapter of Irish history. The play is filled with Irish wit and pathos, and demonstrates both the power of friendship and the vital role of the artist in troubled times.

Although of Irish heritage, Ball was actually born and raised in California and thought he would grow up to be a lawyer like his father. While he studied music during his younger days, playing piano and guitar and annoying his college roommate with his tin whistle, it was his study of the lyrical, turbulent history of Ireland that fully engaged him. On a visit to the Emerald Isle, he fell in love with the eloquence and fire of the Irish oral tradition, and with the Celtic wire-strung harp with its crystalline, bell-like voice. In his words, he "came to know that marvelous unity of Irish words, music and history" that would become his passion and livelihood.

Upon returning to California, he received a Masters Degree in History from Dominican College and then set off to see the country. In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, his love for the spoken word was rekindled when he encountered the living oral tradition of the Appalachian storytellers. After another trip to Ireland, Ball was ready to create his vocation by combining the things he loved most -- Irish history, the spoken word and music. His first step was to find a maker of the wire-strung Celtic harp and teach himself to play.

Ball now tours extensively, performing in concert as well as in his theatre piece. He has recorded nine instrumental and three spoken word albums that have won awards in both categories.

Always a hit here on their annual rounds, SHAMALAMACORD is AARON (“DUCKMANDU”) SEEMAN on accordion and MIKE PENNY on Tsugaru shamisen. As a duo and as solo players, Mike and Aaron are each actively engaged in extending the capabilities of their instruments. The Tsugaru shamisen is the most powerful sounding and popular of the three major types of shamisen, the Tsugaru style comes from Northern Japan. It has enjoyed a resurgence among young people in the last twenty years in Japan, and is therefore a tradition very much alive.

Within two years of picking up the instrument, MIKE PENNY competed in the annual Kanagi Tsugaru Shamisen competition in Northern Japan and received the "nyuusho" or "runner-up" award in his class out of a field of 200, an honor never before bestowed on a non-Japanese player. He also plays in the Tsugaru Shamisen trio, Monsters of Shamisen.

AARON SEEMAN often performs solo as DUCKMANDU. He holds a B.A. in Piano and a Masters in Composition from UC Santa Cruz. As Duckmandu, he has produced three CDs using accordion and voice to produce accordion renditions of punk rock and mainstream rock that evoke the original music to an astonishing degree. He is coming in from the Atlantic Seaboard to play The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Most of what he did in the early days centered around The Ice House and Bob Stane, so there is a relationship there.

JERRY YESTER is an American folk-rock musician, record producer, and arranger grew-up in Burbank. He formed a duo with brother Jim Yester, THE YESTER BROTHERS, and starting playing folk clubs in Los Angeles in 1960. While Jim was in the army, Jerry joined first THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS, and then, in 1963, THE MODERN FOLK QUARTET. The MFQ issued two folk-pop albums in the next two years, and Yester also branched out into other recordings, playing piano on the LOVIN' SPOONFUL's "Do You Believe in Magic?" in 1965. The MFQ split up in 1966, and Yester began work as a solo artist and as a producer, with his wife JUDY HENSKE, his brother Jim's band THE ASSOCIATION, THE TURTLES, and TIM BUCKLEY, for whom he produced “Goodbye and Hello” and “Happy Sad.” The following year, he joined the LOVIN’ SPOONFUL, replacing ZAL YANOVSKY, for whom he also later worked as producer, but soon afterwards the Spoonful split-up for some years.

In 1969, Henske, Yester and Yanovsky put together the cult album “Farewell Aldebaran,” on which Yester played nearly a dozen different instruments.

The following year, Yester and Henske formed a new band, ROSEBUD, but the band dissolved in 1971 and the couple then divorced. Yester continued to work as a producer and arranger on albums by PAT BOONE, AZTEC TWO STEP, and TOM WAITS, and in the 1970s he performed with THE ASSOCIATION and the re-formed MODERN FOLK QUARTET. In the mid 1980s, he moved to Hawaii and formed a dance band. In 1991 both Yester brothers joined a re-formed version of the LOVIN’ SPOONFUL, with whom Yester continues to tour. He now resides in the area of Harrison, Arkansas. Bob Stane, who has followed him for all these years, says, “This will be great fun with a generous helping of humor. People have been saying nice things about Dave Morrison for years. Many of them were other songwriters who were busily recording his songs for years before he went into the studio. Legendary Philadelphia Folk DJ GENE SHAY played a couple of Dave's tunes on his radio show during the last “Philadelphia Folk Festival” which Gene founded and hosts. Shay compares Dave to the late STEVE GOODMAN (who wrote “City of New Orleans”). Acclaimed Chicago duo SMALL POTATOES has recorded two of Dave's songs and calls him, "Our second-favorite songwriter." SEVERIN BROWNE comes from a musical family, including his father, CLYDE JACK BROWNE, a jazz composer and musician, and his very famous brother, JACKSON BROWNE. Severin's first big break was signing with Motown Records back in the 1970s, where he became a house songwriter (the label’s first white songwriter) and he recorded his first two albums there. Since leaving that environment, he has chosen a low-profile career by playing in smaller venues locally and putting out occasional recordings of original songs. The story of the new album, "Driving Toward The Sun," has a more-interesting-than-usual connection in her last project. When Susan James released “Highways, Ghosts, Hearts & Home" in 2011, it earned the praise of famous rocker RYAN ADAMS, who tweeted about her “great songs” and killer band. That was noticed in other arenas. Now, on "Driving Toward the Sun," which officially comes out in February on Megaforce/Sony RED, James teams up with producer RYAN ULYATE, who works with TOM PETTY, and previously with GEORGE HARRISON and JEFF LYNNE, and other famous musicians.
