•• BARN DANCE's FAREWELL YEE-HAH
.
Monday night, January 7th, concludes RONNIE MACK's 25 years and final appearance hosting "THE RONNIE MACK BARNDANCE," a monthly institution and honky-tonkin' good time in the Los Angeles area. As writer and promoter Kim Grant observes, "his absence will be leaving a gaping hole in the L.A. country and roots music scene."
+
The series has brought countless memorable nights as it moved to venues all over town, out-living many of those music halls. Ronnie will preside over his final show at the Barn Dance's home of recent years, Joe's Great American Bar & Grill, 4311 W Magnolia Bl, Burbank.
+
Things commence at 7:30 pm. As always, they'll have food available from the menu on the wall, and the full bar will do a brisk business. And, in the long standing tradition, it's FREE admission.
+
Ronnie's final night brings performances by the all-star BARNDANCE BAND, who plays short sets and backs-up musical guests.
+
Guest music-makers are BOB REYNOLDS, BLISS BOWEN, ELECTRIC EARL, MARK TORTORICI & THE HOLLYWOOD COMBO, BIG JAY McNEELY, MAUREENA & THE MANIAC CADILLAC BAND, and more.
+
THE BARNDANCE BAND is emblematic of the enthusiastic support of musicians throughout the series long tenure. Its lineup includes MARTY RIFKIN, who has performed for years with BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND, and PAUL MARSHALL, bass player on dozens of records by major stars and member of I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. The monthly ensemble playing as the series' house band has long been worth a trip on its own merits. And no group if musicians in any club are faster studies to back-up guests on new originals they've never heard.
+
Monday night is your last grab at some local music history. If you've attended before, you're already there. It'll be crowded, so go early. Lots o' folks will be paying homage and thanks to Ronnie with happy hoots 'n hollers as he rides into the late night sunset.
+
A "ROOTS MUSIC JAM" gives you a chance to play with the BARNDANCE BAND, following the featured artists, and goes 'til 1:30 am. Face it, you're staying out late this week.

•• MONDAY LAUNCH FOR AMERICANA WEB RADIO SHOW
.
Monday, January 7, KIM GRANT launches her new radio show, "TOWN & COUNTRY UNDERGROUND" on broadcast and web simulcast radio. The show goes out at 11 am PST, and there's a new show every day, Monday-Thursday, at the same time.
+
It's on KITR and available worldwide at www.intraffik.com.
+
Monday and Tuesday's shows will focus on Los Angeles-based independent Americana artists. Wednesday and Thursday, Kim says, "We'll hear music from all over the country and beyond!"
+
The Guide reported the intended launch date two weeks ago. It was delayed for the holidays.
+
Kim Grant is well known throughout the Southern California Americana and alt-country music communities, as co-producer of the seasonal "Grand Ol Echo" weekly showcase in Echo Park and other concerts and events, including the annual "Roots Roadhouse." In fact, we have a link to an interview by her, elsewhere in this edition.
+
While everyone can enjoy her show online, listenable radio that originates in L.A. is a rare and precious commodity. Join us in welcoming Kim as she joins a valued few in the radio arena in a town desperately in need of more good radio shows.

•• DOO DAH DATA
.
Exhibition closes January 13; celebrity roast that night is FREE
.
The "Occasional DOO DAH PARADE" in Pasadena is more than the ultimate send-up, a parody and lampoon of the city's other famous procession, the annual Rose Parade. Doo Dah has been around long enough to have its own revered irreverent stars, aspects, and ideosyncracies.
+
All that is celebrated in a museum exhibit that closes January 13, followed by a celebrity roast of parade icon SNOTTY SCOTTY that night. No, it's not time to take to the sidewalks: the Parade isn't until April.
+
"What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been: 35 Years of the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade" is a "Retrospective Exhibition" at the Pasadena Museum of History.
+
The exhibition opened back in August, and closes January 13. It includes a rendition of Chromos Bar, where it all began, and literally hundreds and hundreds of photos of Doo Dah parades spanning the years and the crowds who’ve come to watch.
+
There are model vignettes and artful displays of the most memorable entries, like the "Synchronized Precision Marching Briefcase Drill Team," "BBQ & Hibachi Marching Grill Team," the Lounge Lizards and the "Invisible Marching Drill Team." There's the "Beer Fountain," by "Drunk in the Garage," and costumes, regalia, crowns and memorabilia from Doo Dah Queens, Grand Marshals and Thorny Rose honorees.
+
Of course, signature Doo Dah bands are represented, including SNOTTY SCOTTY & THE HANKIES and HORSES ON ASTROTURF. Also included is a tribute to SPIKE LOVELAND, creator of the original Doo Dah emblem. And there are all-but-extinct issues of “Follies” and "Dia de los Doo Dah," plus tributes to "those friends gone but definitely not forgotten." It's all lovingly curated by Light Bringer Project, Steve Vargas and Sue Behrens.
+
The Doo Dah Parade has changed things in Pasadena: it's now the only city in the world where you can get arrested for throwing a tortilla like a Frisbee, which was a Doo Dah institution until city officials got tired of scraping trampled tortillas off sidewalks.
+
The parade has undergone changes imposed by other factors. It was always held the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but that changed, and dates wandered all over the calendar. One year, it was held behind temporary fencing, with an admission charge to watch it circle City Hall. It was moved off Colorado Boulevard, a segment of the Rose Parade route, and onto obscure streets in east Pasadena. But it won't go away. Now, it happens in the spring.
+
"What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been: 35 Years of the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade" runs through January 13 at the Pasadena Museum of History, 470 W Walnut St, Pasadena 91103; 626-577-1660.
+
Museum hours are Noon to 5 pm, Wednesdays through Sundays, and if you go this Wednesday, it's FREE. Other remaining days, admission is $7 general, $6 students & seniors; free every day for children under age 12, active duty military & their families, and members of the museum.
+
When the exhibition closes January 13, all things Doo Dah will not go gently into that dark night. You can attend THE CELEBRITY ROAST OF SNOTTY SCOTTY following the closing of the exhibition. It doubles ad a celebration if Scotty's birthday.
+
It's Sunday, January 13, at the AMERICAN LEGION HALL in Pasadena, and it's FREE ADMISSION. Details when we get them. If you know anything about the world of Doo Dah, you should expect to show up there and have a good time. Party attire optional.
