LATE ADDITION
Sat, Mar 9, in Pasadena:
8 pm Here are details for the concert by DAVID MALLETT at the Caltech Folk Music Society series in Pasadena. (It's in the original edition, but without these details.)
+
DAVID MALLETT is best known as the composer of "The Garden Song," a song so well-known that it has become an American folk classic that's often thought of as part of the traditional songbook. David has written many other fine songs that haven't received the same attention, but he is a great songwriter. David has appeared in the Caltech Folk Society series twice before.
+
David has recorded 14 albums. He hails from a small town in northern Maine, and in a career that spans four decades, his music has traveled to all corners of the world. His songs have been recorded by more than 150 artists, including PETE SEEGER, ALISON KRAUSS, JOHN DENVER, EMMYLOU HARRIS, and even THE MUPPETS, and his "Garden Song" has been covered by dozens more artists, included a popular version by Texas folk legend GUY CLARK.
+
David Mallett has performed in town halls and folk clubs across America and Europe, in addition to major venues that include the Barns of Wolf Trap and the Newport Folk Festival, and on radio's "A Prairie Home Companion."
+
The Bangor Daily News recognized him as one of the 58 most memorable Mainers of the 20th Century. The readers of FOLKWAX voted him 2003 "Artist of the Year," and voted his CD, "Artist in Me" as the 2003 "Album of the Year."
+
And David is a multi-faceted artist. His album, "The Fable True" (2007), based on 19th century American icon HENRY DAVID THOREAU's last expedition in 1857, is an acclaimed spoken-word CD with accompanying music.
+
In a review of David's most recent recording, "Alright Now," Steve Morse wrote that Mallet "is a keen, sharp eyed observer, whether he's addressing the pitfalls of life ([as in his] 'Dark Side of the Moon') or the joy of a newborn child on 'Beautiful.' This is an exquisite, ennobling record, made by a terrific craftsman."
+
David seldom performs in Southern California, so this is a rare opportunity to see and hear him.
+
Admission is $15; $5 for Caltech students and children. Advance tickets available from the Caltech Ticket Office before 5 pm Friday, or buy at the door if any tix remain. Info,  626-395-4652. Venue is Beckman Institute Auditorium, aka "Little Beckman" on the Caltech campus in Pasadena. Free parking in either of two lots at S end of Michigan Av, off Del Mar.

Thu, Mar 7, in Altadena:
8 pm 8 BALL AITKEN, Nashville-based Australian musician on a US tour, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“The venue named by the Guide's editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
8 Ball’s song 'Yellow Moon' was recently part of the soundtrack on the hit USA television show, “Justified.” He has won numerous awards and had Top Ten country hits in Australia. He is a touring animal, playing 200 gigs a year.
+
By all accounts, 8 Ball Aitken puts on a highly entertaining and original swamp-blues / Americana / alt. country show. 8 Ball Aitken is the Australian redneck preacher at the shotgun wedding between country and blues. It doesn’t matter which part of the family you’re from -- what does matter is the funky, foot-stomping hullaballoo at the all-night party afterwards. Originally hailing from Far North Queensland, Australia, he grew up as a teenager in a run-down tobacco shed, making a living picking tropical fruits by day, and picking guitars by night. 8 Ball’s first break came when he was hired to play nightly at the infamous Johno’s Blues Bar in Cairns, a rough-neck haunt of bikers and shrimp trawler-men. He had to keep the funky swamp music pumping and the party percolating until dawn each day, in order to keep the patrons from killing each other, with the beer flowing instead of blood.
+
8 Ball Aitken is authentic -- a real-deal character who rattles the roof, stomps the planks, and gets his audiences whooping and hollering along in a frenzy of pure exuberance. He started work as a farm laborer aged fifteen, doing back-breakingly hard work on the mango and banana plantations of the Atherton Tablelands, a man's work for a boy's pay. A life-changing conversation with an Aboriginal elder, who told him he should pursue a career in music, convinced 8 Ball to pack his bags, grab his guitar, and leave the farm to meet his destiny.
+
8 Ball Aitken is currently touring his live album, “Alive In Tamworth.” It’s recorded with his trademark electri-fried slide guitar, sense of humor, interactive 3-D audience participation and deep swamp antics.
+
8 Ball has performed at festivals and clubs throughout the USA, Canada, Australia, and Europe. He’s toured in Japan four times, where he headlined the “Rokko Sun Music Festival.” He has also played extensively in Germany, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Singapore, Fiji, and the UK. And now, he's taken-on America.
+
"One listen to ‘Alive In Tamworth’ has you living the blues, feeling it, understanding the primal grooves raining down in spades. This is blues from the swamp, and you need to get on board." -- Samuel J. Fell (Rhythms Magazine / Rolling Stone)
+
Check out 8 Ball's award-winning song “Outback Booty Call” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RYcXmuZqDY. We’re told it’s “All the excitement of a beer-fueled romantic night out in the Australian Outback.” There’s more available at www.youtube.com/8ballaitken.

Fri, Mar 8, in Tehachapi:
7 pm KRAY VAN KIRK, Alaskan singer-songwriter, shares his musical view from the Far North at Fiddler’s Crossing, 206 East F St (at Robinson St), Tehachapi 93561; www.grungehobbit.com; 661-823-9994.
+
Van Kirk sings in the straight-ahead folk ballad tradition of such north-of-the-border legends as STAN ROGERS, IAN TYSON and GORDON LIGHTFOOT. He accompanies himself on 12- and 6-string RainSong graphite guitars.
+
It might seem odd, and hard, to be a touring musician while living in Alaska as a single parent, in a town with no road access -- the only way in or out for him is by air or water. But Van Kirk draws his inspiration from this life.
+
"A friend of mine once said I do everything the hard way," he said, "and he might be right. But all this last winter, I listened to a number of interviews with musicians, actors, comedians and such, and the one thing that came through was that many, if not most, of them were successful because they were able to take what was generally viewed as a weakness or obstacle and make it their strength. I'm not quite sure how that might apply in my situation, but it's encouraging and I'm sure not going to stop!"
+
His lifestyle in Alaska has also given him a different perspective on the "marketing" of his music-making. He calls his approach to writing and performing "Music without borders or cost." He no longer records or sells CDs, because he says, "we've got enough things headed for the landfills, and more than enough `stuff'." He said he used to be so focused on CD sales and the business end of things that it took away from the point of creating music that nourishes and expresses the soul. Instead, he freely gives his songs away over his website as "a deliberate movement away from the bottom line that seems to govern so much of our daily lives."
+
Now, he says, "Every time I finish a new song, I let it sit for a bit, and then it gets recorded and given a home on the music page [of his website] with all the other little digital penguins, waiting to waddle their way across the world, leaving no footprints in the snow."
+
Van Kirk recently completed his work for a PhD, and he is an avid Calvin and Hobbs fan. Somethow, that makes perfect sense.
+

Griffin turned down a golf scholarship at age 18 to pursue a career in music. He taught himself guitar and began to write songs. Now, at age 32, his intelligent and heart-felt lyrics and melodies in such songs as “The Guy Who Says Goodbye to You Is Out of His Mind,” and “Better Than Love,” have garnered commercial and critical acclaim alike. From being featured on NPR to touring with the likes of JOHN MELLENCAMP, PATTI SCIALFA, and THE CRANBERRIES, House continues to gain national recognition and currently is headlining his own tour across the U.S.
+
House was featured on the CBS “Sunday Morning” show where music journalist Bill Flanagan (MTV/VH1) raved about “Lost and Found,” House's first nationally-released record, putting the newcomer on his short list of the best emerging songwriters in the U.S. “I bought House’s CD after a show in New York City,” said Flanagan, “and this never happens: I took it home and must have listened to it 20 times that weekend. I was knocked out."

(“The venue named by the Guide's editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
Fresh off winter shows with DAVID BROMBERG and LAURIE LEWIS, and 120+ dates last year, MELODY WALKER & JACOB GROOPMAN are redefining the "folk duo." They bring grassy roots with a tinge of blue, and great original songwriting without pretense. Their 2012 debut album “Gold Rush Goddess” received national radio airplay, critical acclaim, and was named one of No Depression's top 50 albums of 2012. Walker & Groopman are also leading members of the 2012 RockyGrass band competition winner, FRONT COUNTRY.
+
MELODY WALKER describes their music as acoustic americana bluegrass indie-folkpop. They often call their brand of acoustic folkpop "Americali", or Americana with a California twist. That twist could be the San Francisco Bay Area-based duo’s eclectic roots, from bluegrass and old-time music to Afrobeat and samba, or their open-hearted, unconventional approach to songwriting, setting them apart from their peers in the folk duo world. This performance marks their fifth time playing the Los Angeles area, with previous performances that include the Hotel Cafe and the Cinema Bar. More at www.melodywalkermusic.com/epk.

TARA SITSER -- After a childhood spent as a classical ballerina followed by a 15-year career in musical theater, no one was more surprised than Tara when John Zipperer invited her to join his folk/rock band, John Zipperer & Friends. After many confused stares and a great deal of encouragement, Tara dove in and has been delighted by the expanding musical horizons the band experience has brought. She has shared the stage with some of the best in the Los Angeles Folk/Americana community including Dave Morrison, Lauren Adams, Nick Kirgo, Debra Davis, Mark “Pocket” Goldberg., J.C. Hyke, John M, Severin Browne and, much to her delight, her college roommate, the lovely, multi-talented Jill Freeman.

Critics everywhere acclaim their music, and the New York Times says, it is “bon temps, every time they play.”

7:30 pm PACIFIC SYMPHONY’s “PEDALS AND PIPES” series brings the 1925 classic horror film, “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA,” with live Concert Organ accompaniment, in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Dr, Costa Mesa; 714-556-2787; www.ocpac.org.
+
With its haunting depths, eerie chords and funereal power, the $3.1-million WILLIAM J. GILLESPIE CONCERT ORGAN provides a chilling soundtrack to the 1925 classic horror film, “THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.” The event initiates the second concert the season in Pacific Symphony’s “Pedals and Pipes” series.
+
The one-of-a-kind WILLIAM J. GILLESPIE CONCERT ORGAN, built from steel, tin, oak, poplar, maple, lead and carbon fiber, with 4,322 pipes, premiered at the first concert of Pacific Symphony’s 2008-09 season, after three years and 42,000 hours of labor by a team of organ builders at C.B. Fisk.
+
Notable organist DENNIS JAMES, considered by many to be the foremost scholar and performer of silent film accompaniment, recreates for the third time the live musical experience heard in movie palaces of the 1920s. Last October, James performed the soundtrack for “Jekyll and Hyde” and, in April 2009, for “The Phantom of the Opera,” accompanied by the orchestra.
+
His new arrangement of the original score by GUSTAV HINRICHS intricately conveys the fear and emotions of the actors on screen. The film stars “the man of a thousand faces,” LON CHANEY, SR., as Erik, a mysterious phantom who threatens the diva Carlotta and forces her to give up the leading role in the opera for his love, Christine Daaé. (Yes, Shakespeare’s “play-within-a-play” has had many applications since hthe Bard used it in Hamlet.)
+
For organ, opera and classic film fans alike, this is a true musical event, and it takes place one night only.
+
Of James’ silent film scoring, Dr. Ed Mullins wrote, “James’ accompaniment was one of the finest backgrounds I have ever heard to a silent film. His performance was flawless. Its sensitivity to the action on the screen was an emotional experience bringing lumps to the throat and tears glistening in the eyes of an awestruck audience. It was superb.”
+
James adds, “Silent films were never meant to be presented silently. From the beginning of the motion picture era at the turn of the 20th-century, music was an expected element of the presentation, whether supplied by pianist, organist or band… When applied appropriately to emotional development, descriptive background, comedy support or stimulating action, the music assumes a position of importance in music history equal to that of music of other periods produced for specific events or purposes.”
+
The film’s story, an adaptation of the gothic French horror novel of the same name written by GASTON LEROUX, captivated and terrorized audiences of its day with its cutting-edge special effects and horrific makeup designed by Chaney himself -- which the studio kept secret before the premiere, causing screaming and fainting when the film was first shown. The story revolves around rehearsals and performances of the most popular opera of the day, “Faust,” at the Paris Opera House. Opera lovers may take special interest in hearing how James works many of the familiar melodies from “Faust” into his dramatic accompaniment.

Sun, Mar 10, FILM SCREENING WITH LIVE MUSIC, in L.A.:
8:45 pm THOMAS DOLBY’s “THE INVISIBLE LIGHTHOUSE” just won big at the D.I.Y. Film Festival Awards, and that brings him for a live “transmedia experience,” performing the score LIVE and doing LIVE narration, in his one-performance-of-its-kind in the U.S., at the American Film Institute’s Mark Goodson Screening Room, 2021 N Western Av, L.A.
+
THOMAS DOLBY’s directorial debut won two awards at the “LOS ANGELES D.I.Y. FILM FEST.” Legendary musician scoops prizes for “Best Director” and “Best Documentary Short” with his “cinematic tone poem,” “The Invisible Lighthouse.” The original electronic music icon, decadesd before “electronica” became a synonym for annoying, THOMAS DOLBY first shot to fame in 1982 with his self-directed MTV video hit “She Blinded Me With Science.” He’s waited nearly thirty years to attempt the leap to full-fledged film director, but it seems at last, his wait was worth it.
+
This week, his 30-minute debut film “The Invisible Lighthouse,” won two top awards at the Los Angeles DIY Film Festival. Dolby is flying-in from his home in the UK to attend the gala award ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on March 8, and the evening will climax with a screening of the film in its entirety, as Dolby performs the evocative score and does the narration live on stage.
+
“’The Invisible Lighthouse’ is a romantic and hypnotic piece of filmmaking. As a fan of Thomas’ music, I am excited to see him make such an excellent, Dolbyesque film debut!” -- J.J. ABRAMS, “Star Trek Into Darkness” director, himself no stranger to the allure of DIY filmmaking (Cloverfield, Super 8.)
+
Dolby’s film charts the imminent closure of an historic lighthouse on the tip of a mysterious island near his home on the coast of Suffolk, formerly used as a testing zone for experimental weapons. The lighthouse figures heavily in the as-yet-unsolved “Rendlesham UFO incident,” widely referred to as “the British Roswell.” Since the island is closed to the public -- due to the presence of unexploded bombs -- Dolby executed several clandestine commando-like raids in his RIB, cameras rolling.
+
Dolby wrote and shot “The Invisible Lighthouse” entirely by himself, over the course of a year, using consumer cameras including the GoPro Hero2 and an iPhone-controlled ARParrot quadrocopter. He taught himself to edit in Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Final Cut Pro X using video tutorials on Lynda.com, and cut the film in his wind- and solar-powered lifeboat studio on the East Anglian coast.
+
“Whenever new technology comes along that puts professional techniques in the hands of inspired amateurs, I turn into a kid in a candy store!” said Dolby. “It’s like in the ’80s when electronic music arrived, I leapt at the chance to make entire records in my back room. Now for a few hundred bucks, I can pick up a camera rig and software capable of making a hi-res movie, and get creative with a personal story that the whole world can watch on the Web.”
+
Dolby hurriedly learned basic CGI and green screen compositing techniques, and helped himself to low-priced HD stock footage from Shutterstock.com and green screen SFX from sites like FootageIsland. The eye-popping results caught the attention of the judges at the annual DIY Film festival in Los Angeles, California, where Dolby entered his film in the Documentary Short category; he took first prize in that category, and went on to win the Best Director award as well.
+
Richard Martini, the programming director of the DIY Film Festival, said: "Thomas Dolby’s first effort as a director embodies everything that the DIY Film Fest aspires to — it pushes the envelope of creativity using tools available to everyone. Our founding motto is from avant-garde filmmaker Jean Cocteau: ‘When the cost of filmmaking is as much as a pencil and a piece of paper, then you'll find true art.’ Dolby's film is a perfect example of that belief.”
+
Continuing in the vein of his critically acclaimed album “A Map of the Floating City” and the groundbreaking FloatingCity.com transmedia game, Dolby plans to embark on a theater tour of the USA later in 2013 with live performances of “The Invisible Lighthouse.” The film provides a context to the music on his new album, and carries on a tradition for innovation that has been Dolby’s hallmark for over thirty years, since the halcyon days of MTV. In the early ’90s, Dolby began distributing music on the Internet via his tech company, Beatnik Inc. A few years after that, he switched over to mobile phones as a mass-market platform, co-inventing the tiny synthesizer that powered millions of Nokia (NASDAQ:NOK) cell phones. Now he says it’s the film industry’s turn to experience the sea change that comes with technical innovation.
+
“Suddenly you don’t need a fat wallet and a big crew to shoot a movie,” said Dolby. “All those impoverished writers, actors, directors — now they can quit waiting table and go make their own films, and distribute them via Netflix and iTunes. Okay, there will be a lot of crap! But in amongst it all, there will be brilliant fresh talent, people telling human stories that would never have seen the light of day.”
+
Dolby may shortly announce an open-to-the-public show in Los Angeles. Stay tuned. More at www.thomasdolby.com/tixstore.

+
From writing her first song at the age of six, to being discovered and playing alongside her idols CARLOS SANTANA and STEVE VAI early in her career, ORIANTHI has made an enduring mark on the music industry.
+
While many were introduced to this gifted guitar goddess when she played the GRAMMY Awards in 2009 as part of CARRIE UNDERWOOD's band, it was being selected for MICHAEL JACKSON's ill-fated “This Is It” Tour that exposed her to mainstream audiences.
+
In the Fall of 2009, Orianthi released “According To You,” her first solo single, which went platinum in the U.S. and abroad. More than just a phenomenal guitarist, this success showed she had serious vocal chops as well.
+
Tonight’s event comes on the eve of her new album release, the DAVE STEWART produced, “Heaven In This Hell,” as Orianthi visits the Clive Davis Theater for the latest installment of the GRAMMY Museum’s “Great Guitars” series. Hear Orianthi discuss her musical influences, how she developed her craft and what's next in her already-impressive career. After the interview, Orianthi will take audience questions and perform a selection of songs. The event is moderated by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares SCOTT GOLDMAN, a great guitarist himself.

Husband and wife team Jim and Anne Curry deliver the multi-platinum hits of the great John Denver in a fun-filled evening of singing and stories. Many of the members of John Denver’s own band, including his orchestra leader, have performed with Jim.
+
Tribute artist Jim Curry's voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie “Take Me Home: The John Denver Story.” He has performed Denver's music in sold-out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today's top performer of Denver's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits. Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when "Rocky Mountain High" "Sunshine" "Calypso" and "Annie's Song" topped the charts, and his popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other.
Denver's message is worth repeating: "Be kind to the Earth and to each other. "

8 pm THE LIMELITERS with special guests, THE HONEY-LULUS, play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
This is a rare occurrence and one you should snap right up. THE LIMELITERS grace the stage at The Coffee Gallery Backstage only about once every 5 years to get sharp for a national tour and do something nice for Bob Stane, the venue’s impresario and long-suffering show-biz guru. Whatever the reason, Bob says, “We are ready to entertain you so don't call for reservations unless you can really come. We have to fill every seat for acts like this one. Only a $20 ticket for a wonderful night of music and comedy.”
+
The Limeliters launched their career in 1959 at San Francisco’s famous "Hungry i" and, before long, founding members Alex Hassilev, Lou Gottlieb and Glenn Yarbrough emerged as one of the dominant voices of the early 1960′s folk music scene. A string of best selling albums for RCA Records and frequent appearances on TV quickly made them a household name.
+
Time Magazine summed-up their appeal with the following memorable quote: “If the button-down, scrubbed-looking Kingston Trio are the undergraduates of big-time folk singing, The Limeliters are the faculty.”
+
Over the past 50 years the lineup of the group has featured several spectacularly talented new members, but The Limeliters have never deviated from the integrity of the fabulous sound that they pioneered.
+
With their energy and enthusiasm undiminished and undaunted, current members ANDY CORWIN, GAYLAN TAYLOR, and DON MAROVICH remain as exciting an act as the genre has produced. Now, more than ever, the surging vocals, thrilling harmony and whacked out sense of humor of this unique trio continue to earn them their title as “The Fabulous Limeliters”.
+

Naughty, lovely, and obscure musical gems of the 1910's, 20's and 30's performed with uncommon authenticity by the enchanting Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys. An all star cast of musicians and wits. The fun never stops with Ukulele Chanteuse JANET KLEIN and her Parlour Boys. They deliver a rollicking feast of music from a simpler age. Janet and her distinctive musician pals bring to life "Obscure, Naughty and Lovely tunes of the 1910s, 20s & 30s,” including a bundle of spirited and inspired renditions of cleverly fun but forgotten Tin Pan Alley, early hot jazz, saucy bits and late ragtime gems. Adding to the band's already extensive repertoire these merrymakers zestfully branch into obscure vaudeville and Vitaphone numbers, Hawaiian, Yiddish novelty tunes, French and Italian knock-out ballads. With a bevy of hot musicians on Hawaiian lapsteel guitar, washboard, violin, upright piano, cornet etcetera. Watch our for the Charming and Alarming Ms. Klein! Ho Do Dee Do! Hotsy Totsy.

Sat, Mar 16, in Pasadena:
7 pm CINDY KALMENSON, plus MARK HUMPHREYS, plus the opening set by performing host DAVE MORRISON with SCOTT KING on bass, at Throop Church, 300 S Los Robles Av, Pasadena.
+
It’s something of an “alternative St. Patrick’s event.” DAVE MORRISON explains: “So here's the deal. I quit boozing in June of 2010 after a very long and blurry adventure. I don't miss it much, but on occasion, it is a bit difficult. We drink because it releases us from our inhibitions mostly. And when we give it up - if we do - we're afraid that we won't have much fun anymore. Or BE much fun.”
+
Dave continues, “We do lots and lots of shows, and there is almost always some alcohol to be had. It's almost never a problem - either for me or for those having a beer or a glass of wine. I don't intend to change this policy. But I do think that we ought to occasionally offer a completely temptation-free environment for those who are trying to stay clear of the slippery places. It also wouldn't hurt the casual imbibers to remember that music and camaraderie is a pretty good serotonin delivery system without the aid of alcohol. Just in case that glass of red wine starts becoming a little too integral to the fun. If you catch my drift.”
+
He says, “And what better time to do such a thing then Saint Patrick's Day, the national celebration of slurred speech, crying jags, and slobbery bonding with strangers? Actually this show is the night before, but I assume that the Green Beer will already be flowing. We'd love to see you there, and we'd be proud if you brought somebody along who is either sobering up or taking a serious look at it. Don't worry, this will not be an intervention with music, or some somber preachy affair. It'll be a good lively show with just a hint of subtext.
+
Dave continues, “We are pleased to present Cindy Kalmenson, Cindy is a real natural. She takes the stage like she's strolling into her living room, and is completely open and funny and spontaneous. The girl is a rascal. And she is also a terrific singer-songwriter. Follow the link for a taste of all the awards and accolades she's won. you will really love her.” (http://cindykalmenson.net/cindykalmenson/Welcome.html)
+
Not through yet, Dave goes on, “Also with us is MARK HUMPHREYS. Many know Mark as the owner-operator of Trough Records. Some know him as the producer of my own albums or those of other artists. But the way WE know him is as a singer-songwriter of prodigious gifts. He has a bunch of fine albums, and toured the country performing for ten years before sanity overtook him and he settled down. He doesn't gig too often, but as anybody who was at the last Trough show can attest, he still brings it. He also knows a thing or two about trading body-blows with the bottle and living to tell the tale.”
+
He concludes, “We'll have a dinner break, and some socializing, and then my band and I will finish the concert portion of the celebration. All the artists will be doing relatively brief sets. You'll get enough music, but not too much. After we wrap up, we'll circle the chairs and have one of our patented song-circles. Anybody in attendance is welcome to sing a song, or recite a poem, or dance a damn jig. Anything goes - within reason. So bring an instrument. Maybe we'll have some Irish songs. Hint hint.”

Songsalive!, the largest international non-profit organization supporting, promoting and educating songwriters and composers worldwide since 1997, brings a songwriting workshop with Cat Cohen, and your opportunity to receive a song critique. Songsalive asks, “Are you a songwriter willing to take your songs to the next level? Workshop your songs to be the best they can be, and get them out to the world. The Songsalive! Workshops are open to all songwriters, composers, musicians, singers and music lovers and we’ve been doing this for 15 years. This is your chance to develop your songwriting in a supportive and intimate environment, meet invaluable music industry experts, network with fellow members, and be part of your local songwriters community. The first half is solely dedicated to an in-the-round critique workshop where writers present one song each - either on CD or live - with feedback and critique given by a guest speaker or the Songsalive! moderator (who in-turn allows some comments from attendees also). The second half is dedicated to a Music Industry educational and informative discussion/talk, often with an industry guest speaker, and plenty of time to talk and network.”
+
MUST make a reservation to be considered for a song critique: www.songsalive.org/events.htm or http://www.meetup.com/songsalive. Workshop fee, $10, plus lunch purchase required (from regular menu).

Tue, Apr 16, in L.A.:
8 pm RODRIGUEZ performs at The Orpheum Theatre, 842 S Broadway, L.A.; 213-749-5171. Yes, it’s the musician profiled in the OSCAR-winning film, “SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN,” playing his only L.A. show. Yes, he can still sing and play guitar, and stir the longings of the soul.
+
On OSCAR night, “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting music biopic and investigative journey of discovery by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL, won “Best Documentary Film.” It is the story of rejection, unknown fame for an artist living in obscurity, and remarkable rediscovery. It’s the story (so far) of remarkable singer-songwriter SIXTO RODRIGUEZ, a man for whom acclaim was delayed, but ultimately not denied. It’s a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.
+
On February 6, the Guide’s editor attended a special “Reel Talk” screening of “Searching for Sugar Man” that included a Q & A with director Bendjelloul. (The Guide ran a “News Extra” edition on February 5, alerting readers of the chance to attend that special screening.) The film had just won at the Director's Guild of America (DGA) the previous Friday night, capturing the “Best Feature Award” at the International Documentary Association's 2012 “IDA Documentary Awards” at DGA.
+
Musically, ithe film won the “Creative Recognition Award” for “Best Music” for RODRIGUEZ's original songs and BENDJELLOUL's additional score.
+
RODRIGUEZ’s story remains one of the music world’s most unusual tales, reaching back to the 1970s. An obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his oft-bootlegged cult album “Cold Fact” is the basis for “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting new documentary by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL. Light In The Attic Records, in partnership with Sony Legacy, are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from “Cold Fact” and its 1971 follow-up “Coming From Reality” – reissued in 2008 and 2009, respectively, by the Light In The Attic label.
+
The story of RODRIGUEZ the musician begins back in the late ‘60s, when he was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, that record, “Cold Fact,” bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled “Coming From Reality,” produced by STEVE ROWLAND, fame eluded Rodriguez. So he drifted into obscurity, not knowing he was becoming the subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.
+
He was widely rumored to have died in bizarre ways, including a widely-believed version that had set himself on fire at the end of a performance for an audience that taked louder and louder over his singing. That was after he had faded into obscurity in the U.S. as just another singer-songwriter who failed to catch-on.
+
But, unknown to RODRIGUEZ, “Cold Fact” took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into the repressive apartheid-era South Africa, where everyone – not just black citizens – were subjected to curfews, bans against public gatherings, and strict regulation of what they could see, read, or hear on radio and television. “Cold Fact” was banned by the government, and that set then stage for the album to become a national phenomenon that transcended generations over the next two decades. It was the soundtrack for a resistance movement of liberal South African youth.
+
Meanwhile, back in Detroit, Rodriguez was working in construction and renovation, and disgusted with what he saw of government officials’ neglect of the poor and of deteriorating infrastructure, he even ran for mayor. All the while, Rodriguez remained totally unaware that he was not just a local folk hero, but had become an iconic household name – thousands of miles away, across an expanse of ocean.
+
Decades passed. Then, two South African fans, STEPHEN ‘SUGAR’ SEGERMAN and CRAIG BARTHOLOMEW-STRYDOM, set out to learn, once and for all, what had really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of “Searching for Sugar Man.”
+
Thanks to two obsessed fans who simply set out to learn the man's true fate, we have an OSCAR-winning, acclaimed chronicle about the rediscovery of Sixto Rodriguez, and a context for rediscovering a remarkable artist in the man himself.

Rodriguez said recently, “I describe myself as ‘musico-politico’,” adding, “I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time.”
+
His artist’s perspective is undiminished. That is evident as he continues, “Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like ‘We Want Jobs,’ and ‘Stop the War’ – I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.
+
STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+

Jul 4-7, FESTIVAL, in Oregon:
Annual “Waterfront Blues Fest” in Portland, Oregon brings 75 bands, from blues to swing and a Zydeco lineup includes CHUBBY CARRIER & THE BAYOU SWAMP BAND, LIL’ WAYNE & SAME OL’ 2-STEP, THE PINE LEAF BOYS, HORACE TRAHAN & THE OSSUN EXPRESS, TOOLOOSE, & ATOMIC GUMBO. Our Cajun-zydeco dance friends tell us, “If flying in, best to avoid a rental car & parking fees in downtown. Options for rooms include www.hotwire.com for a 3-star hotel ($68) at the airport (with shuttle from terminal) within walking distance to the Cascade light rail station. To / from downtown takes 45 minutes, and drops you 4 short blocks from the fest. [Another option is the] University Place Hotel (www.uplacehotel.com) for $113 / night, including tax & breakfast, ten blocks from the fest.” They also suggest the PSU campus dorm rooms with bath & amenities, $56 to $66 / night, 12 blocks from the fest; www.pdx.edu/conferences/stay-us, where you can click on “individual stay contract” for details.
+
Hotels across the street from the fest include the Marriott and Hotel 50. Both are over $150 / night. The Hilton Hotel (6 blocks away) may be willing to bargain if you arrive without reservations and they have empty rooms.

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules of performances in Southern California venues large and small. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kids o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to proto blues… The Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
