• With all the sabre-rattling in stark contrast to the message of Easter, we received a comment (March 30) from a reader calling himself "Pete for Peace." As he points-out, it's beginning to feel like deju vu all over again. You can read it, and more, and we encourage you to do that, and to add your own. Thanks to Pete, and to all, for your reader comments to our SPECIAL: “Ten-Year Anniversary of the Iraq War, and an Ignored Caution, Before it Happened.” Larry Wines, a working journalist and columnist in 2002, was among the very few in media who warned against the rush to war. The Guide reprinted his original, full-page piece, as published in newspapers six months before the US invaded Iraq. “A Fork in the Road” is a multi-genre effort combining elements of Americana, Roots, Country, Western and Pop. The songs featured on A Fork in the Road include the title track, Fork in the Road, a song initially written by Rob for good friend and ex-band mate, R.J. Mills upon his departure from The Tumbling Tumbleweeds and from California. The song has since become an interesting foreshadowing of the disbandment of THE TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS and Rob’s farewell to that chapter in his life. If Howard Kaylan had sung only one song, the TURTLES’ 1967 number-one smash hit “Happy Together,” his place in rock-and-roll history would still be secure. But that recording, named by BMI as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with more than 5 million radio plays, is only the tip of a most remarkable iceberg. Most artists would have been happy for the five-year success that the Turtles enjoyed, but for Kaylan, that run at the top of the charts was only the beginning. After the TURTLES broke up in 1970, Kaylan, along with career-long partner MARK VOLMAN, surprised the rock world by joining FRANK ZAPPA’s group the MOTHERS OF INVENTION. Overnight, Howard’s squeaky-clean image as an AM radio hitmaker was turned inside out.

On February 6, the Guide’s editor attended a special “Reel Talk” screening of “Searching for Sugar Man” that included a Q & A with director Bendjelloul. (The Guide ran a “News Extra” edition on February 5, alerting readers of the chance to attend that special screening.) The film had just won at the Director's Guild of America (DGA) the previous Friday night, capturing the “Best Feature Award” at the International Documentary Association's 2012 “IDA Documentary Awards” at DGA.

Musically, ithe film won the “Creative Recognition Award” for “Best Music” for RODRIGUEZ's original songs and BENDJELLOUL's additional score.

RODRIGUEZ’s story remains one of the music world’s most unusual tales, reaching back to the 1970s. An obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his oft-bootlegged cult album “Cold Fact” is the basis for “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting new documentary by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL. Light In The Attic Records, in partnership with Sony Legacy, are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from “Cold Fact” and its 1971 follow-up “Coming From Reality” – reissued in 2008 and 2009, respectively, by the Light In The Attic label.

The story of RODRIGUEZ the musician begins back in the late ‘60s, when he was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, that record, “Cold Fact,” bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled “Coming From Reality,” produced by STEVE ROWLAND, fame eluded Rodriguez. So he drifted into obscurity, not knowing he was becoming the subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.

He was widely rumored to have died in bizarre ways, including a widely-believed version that had set himself on fire at the end of a performance for an audience that taked louder and louder over his singing. That was after he had faded into obscurity in the U.S. as just another singer-songwriter who failed to catch-on.
+
But, unknown to RODRIGUEZ, “Cold Fact” took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into the repressive apartheid-era South Africa, where everyone – not just black citizens – were subjected to curfews, bans against public gatherings, and strict regulation of what they could see, read, or hear on radio and television. “Cold Fact” was banned by the government, and that set then stage for the album to become a national phenomenon that transcended generations over the next two decades. It was the soundtrack for a resistance movement of liberal South African youth.

Meanwhile, back in Detroit, Rodriguez was working in construction and renovation, and disgusted with what he saw of government officials’ neglect of the poor and of deteriorating infrastructure, he even ran for mayor. All the while, Rodriguez remained totally unaware that he was not just a local folk hero, but had become an iconic household name – thousands of miles away, across an expanse of ocean.

Decades passed. Then, two South African fans, STEPHEN ‘SUGAR’ SEGERMAN and CRAIG BARTHOLOMEW-STRYDOM, set out to learn, once and for all, what had really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of “Searching for Sugar Man.”

Rodriguez said recently, “I describe myself as ‘musico-politico’,” adding, “I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time.”

As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The popular bluegrass-themed festival is moving from its original location at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in a bittersweet decision for the family of event founder DON TUCKER, who passed away after suffering a stroke in October. The Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park is a 150-acre venue with green grass stage area, bountiful trees and two stocked lakes for fishing. The park is surrounded by a variety of hotels and offers quick and easy access from the I-10 freeway. Jul 4-7, FESTIVAL, in Oregon:
Annual “Waterfront Blues Fest” in Portland, Oregon brings 75 bands, from blues to swing and a Zydeco lineup includes CHUBBY CARRIER & THE BAYOU SWAMP BAND, LIL’ WAYNE & SAME OL’ 2-STEP, THE PINE LEAF BOYS, HORACE TRAHAN & THE OSSUN EXPRESS, TOOLOOSE, & ATOMIC GUMBO. Most of the 75 blues & swing bands had yet to be posted at press time. The fest is in Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, and brings over 20,000 attendees each day.

Our Cajun-zydeco dance friends tell us, “If flying in, best to avoid a rental car & parking fees in downtown. Options for rooms include www.hotwire.com for a 3-star hotel ($68) at the airport (with shuttle from terminal) within walking distance to the Cascade light rail station. To / from downtown takes 45 minutes, and drops you 4 short blocks from the fest.
