KULAK'S WOODSHED OPEN MIC / AFFORDABLE PRO RECORDING SESSION
.
The every-Monday Open Mic at Kulak's Woodshed has been happening for years, including the legendary decade it was hosted by Kiki Wow before she left to become the keeper of acoustic music on the Central Coast. .
It remains a popular event, and all ages are welcome.
.
But that's not the primary factor that attracts artists. Kulak's offers reasonably-priced pro audio / video recordings, smartly produced from multiple cameras.
.
There are a few recent changes. First is the new start time of 8 pm. You'll need to be there at 7 pm to sign-up for the one-song lottery. At 7:30, the host draws the names from a basket, one at a time. Paul Kulak says, "We usually have about 35-50 artists signing-up, so please perform a song that is 4 minutes or less, so that all the artists signing-up have a chance to play."
.
He continues, "For $20, you can request a DVD copy of your performance, captured by our 6 camera video studio with audio mixed in our 24 track Pro Tools studio. It's the Woodshed's only source of income to keep the doors open. We have nothing else to sell. A copy of the Pro Tools tracks are also available upon request. Please pick up your DVD on the following Monday night after 7 pm."
.
That's not all. Paul adds, "You are welcome to use our acoustic guitar, baby grand piano -- on loan by Bill Stettler, Thank you Bill -- and drum kit -- use our brushes please. You can also sing to a track if you bring it in on a CD. Original songs are 95% of what artists do here but covers are fine, as well. No amps please. We have all the audio gear, DI's, and hook ups you'll need. Thank you for helping to keep Kulak's Woodshed alive."

Festival TICKETS / EATS:
+
A very reasonable $13 (advance purchase price) gets you a General Admission . But that's ONLY a general admission, no crawfish to eat, and you're on your own for food. (Advance online purchase price; it's $15 on-site.)
+
But, as good as the music and general hoop-la are, you don't want to settle for just getting in to this festival. Read on.
+
For $28, you get a One-Day General Admission with a "CRAWFISH FEAST" served by Bristol Farms, and it includes 2 to 2-1/4 lbs. of fresh live steamed crawfish, red baby potatoes, corn on the cob and dipping sauce. (Advance online purchase price; it's $35 on-site until it's sold-out.)
+
For $35, you get a One-Day General Admission, plus the "CRAW BUCKET FEAST," served by Bristol Farms. This feast includes 3 lbs. of fresh live steamed crawfish, red baby potatoes, corn on the cob, and dipping sauce. (Advance online purchase price; it's $48 on-site until it's sold-out.)
+
HOW MUCH FOOD IS IT? Crawfish Feast platter or Craw Bucket Feast, it's A LOT of food. And if you want to get serious, it takes a lot of delectably enjoyable time to eat it. What does that mean? A parent and a young kid can joyfully share a "Crawfish Feast" platter. Two adults can happily share a "Craw Bucket," and a couple with a young child can buy one admission-with-bucket and just two additional admissions. A dating couple could share a "feast" platter and hit the food court for more and different cuisine (see below), or a couple can fill-up sharing a bucket, spending at least an hour-and-a-half busily eating it. But if teenagers are involved and you expect to share a platter or even a bucket, they will develop a sudden love for crawfish and devour everything, leaving you an 18-inch high pile of shells and nothing else. Finally, if you have your own crab /lobster cracking tools, take them. Crawfish have thinner shells and are smaller, but tools can make it easier. So plan a bit, and this will be a highlight of your summer.
+
Special admission discounts and packages are available, but only at the festival's website.
+
In addition to the crawfish, there is an extensive "International Food Court," featuring New Orleans inspired cuisine, Café du Monde-style chicory coffee and beignets, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, alligator-on-a-stick, catfish, and more.
+
We must emphasize: to assure that you will enjoy CRAWFISH at the CRAWFISH FESTIVAL, you need to purchase it in advance, both to save a lot of money and to sure you get yours. It's wonderful, everybody knows it, and it sells-out.
+
The festival is family-friendly, and runs Saturday, noon–11 pm, and Sunday, noon–10 pm.

in Topanga:
7:30 pm "FIRST FRIDAY FILM NIGHT" sponsored by the Topanga Peace Alliance presents "The Invisible War" at the new Topanga Library, 122 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga 90290.
+
"The Invisible War" is an Academy Award nominee in 2012 and one of Time Magazine’s "Ten Best Films of the Year." From Oscar®-and Emmy®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick,"The Invisible War" is a groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military.
+
The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem. Today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 22,800 violent sex crimes in the military in 2011. 20% of all active-duty female soldiers are sexually assaulted. Female soldiers aged 18 to 21 accounted for more than half of the victims.
+
Focusing on the powerfully emotional stories of rape victims, "The Invisible War" is a moving indictment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. It also features hard-hitting interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress that reveal the perfect storm of conditions that exist for rape in the military, its long-hidden history, and what can be done to bring about much-needed change.
+
The Topanga Peace Alliance screening features a vegetarian snack potluck (no alcohol) at 7:15 pm, with the film screening at 7:30 pm. A discussion follows the screening.

WORKSHOP for ARTISTS,
in L.A. (Griffith Park):
1-4 pm “HOW TO PLAY BASS GUITAR” a workshop by MIKE LEY, award-winning western musician and bass player for THE RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE and the CODY BRYANT EXPERIENCE, presented by the Western Music Association California Chapter in the Mary Pickford Education Center at the Autry National Center (Autry Museum), 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles 90027.
+
Mike Ley has worked in the Country-Western field with various artists including Roy Rogers, Eddie Dean, Harold Hensley, Cliffie Stone, Molly Bee, Hank Penny, Stuart Hamblin, Harvey Walker, and many others. He started-out playing mandolin at age 4 and eventually added the guitar, banjo, harmonica and electric and acoustic bass. He was in the house band at the Whisky-A-Go Go and has worked with Little Anthony, Sonny and Cher, Sonny Knight, Suggie Ottis, The Lettermen, The Coasters, Etta James, and many others. Mike is an accomplished songwriter and teamed with poet Les Buffham to write "Nobody Kisses Their Horse Anymore," which was nominated for several WMA awards.
+
Mike brings a different approach to playing the bass. He thinks the main goal of a bass player is to join with the other rhythm instruments in laying down the "rug" that supports the lead instruments and vocalists. "Less is more" when it comes to playing the bass, says Mike. "One right note is so much more effective than two wrong ones."
+
Mike will explain the relationship between chords and where the bass fits in the picture. He will be explaining the use of the circle of 5ths and the Nashville system of playing songs in different keys. He will cover what patterns to play on different types of songs. Mike will use the bass guitar for demonstration but everything will be directly applicable to the upright bass. Mike encourages everyone to bring a bass guitar.

3-6 pm "RESEDA RENAISSANCE --CELEBRATION OF RESEDA'S '80s ROCK 'N ROLL HISTORY" is a retrospective with current artists and a chance to participate, at Continental Art Supplies, 7041 Reseda Bl, Reseda 91335.
+
Do you remember when Wolf & Rismiller's Country Club was a prime music venue?
+
The Outreach Committee of the Reseda Neighborhood Council hosts this arts event "to celebrate Reseda's days of being the music hot spot in the Valley in the '80s."
+
Special guests will talk about their experiences of being part of that scene: Richard Bruland, former owner of Bebop Records, Sal Guitarez, house photographer of The Country Club 1982-1984, and poet "Beatle John" Turney (aka "The King of Reseda") will all talk about Reseda in the '80s.
+
“Reseda” will feature artworks, photography and videos by local artists inspired by Reseda.
+
Valley artist Jodi Bonassi will unveil her latest barbershop painting of Medina's in Reseda (She put iconic figures from today’s Reseda in the barber chairs), while Levi Ponce and his crew will paint a mural, and many other artists and photographers will display works which represent or are inspired by Reseda.
+
For detailed info, contact Spike Dolomite Ward, Co-chair, Outreach Committee, at sdward@resedacouncil.org.
+
Artists can contact Spike for guidelines to participate.
+
Guest speakers share stories about what it was like to be at the center of the Reseda 80s music scene.
+
A poet from the era will read poetry inspired by Reseda during that time.
+
Announcements will be made regarding more arts related events coming up for the "Reseda Renaissance."
+
Viewing of the art and videos in the gallery runs 6-9 pm.
+
Beginning at 7 pm, scheduled speakers are:
+
• Richard Bruland, former owner of Bebop Records, will talk about his record store which also served as an art gallery and performing arts space which featured many well known performers.
+
• "Beatle John" Turney (aka “The King of Reseda”) will read poetry about Reseda from his book, “The King of Reseda.”
+
• Sal Guitarez, house photographer of The Country Club from 1982 -1984, will talk about having full access to the bands and the house to shoot his photos, what Reseda was like during that time, and how he benefitted by attending Reseda High School where he was a student of legendary photography teacher Warren King.
+
• Norm Harris, owner of Norm’s Rare Guitars, will tell stories about selling guitars to famous musicians while his shop was located (for decades) on Vanowen and Tampa.
+
• New L.A. City Councilman Bob Blumenfield will introduce himself and speak about his vision for Reseda.
+
• Levi Ponce and his crew will be painting a Michelangelo mural on the north wall of Continental Art Supplies during the show. The store will remain open during the event.
+
• Various Reseda-owned businesses will sell food, and the Cleveland HS Robotics Club will sell beverages as their fundraiser.
+
"Through the arts, the community will come together, promoting good will while supporting the local economy at the same time. This event is a reminder that Reseda was once the center of music in the Valley. We can do it again," says the Reseda Neighborhood Council.

Sat, Aug 3, in Altadena:
7 pm "ARTISTRY OF THE GUITAR" with Boston-based American Fingerstyleguitarist master guitarist Ken Bonfield, is a solo concert at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
"Legacy," Bonfield's fifth solo CD and his 7th overall, is a blend of old and new songs performed entirely solo on a variety of instruments he brings on the road. They include his newly-acquired custom Carruth guitar (http://www.alcarruthluthier.com); a 2007 baritone guitar that Bonfield likens to a plucked cello; a 2010 11-string Harp Guitar that has a standard guitar's 6 strings plus an additional 5 'sub-bass' strings that allow Bonfield to play bass and guitar at the same time; and his 2012 Small Jumbo Carruth 'Green' guitar made entirely from sustainable North American hardwoods. He is an advocate of sustainable woods, like walnut, cherry, persimmon, and maple, as well as making use of salvaged wood, such as the Redwood top on his guitar acquired in the mid 1970s from a 12-foot-tall stump -- the tree itself was originally 'harvested' in the late 1800's.
+
Thus, the album name, "Legacy," has meaning. Produced by New England master engineer Tom Eaton, it was fully funded through a Kickstarter "crowd funding" campaign by Bonfield's fans.
+
In the spirit of the way it was funded, everyone who pays for a concert ticket gets a free CD. As venue impresario Bob Stane says, "That's a pretty good deal."
+
Bonfield does a 90-minute afternoon workshop at 4 pm and an evening concert at 7 pm, both here today. (See 4 pm listing.)
+
Bonfield's 90-minute workshop for guitarists and musicians of any level on Saturday afternoon is called "Developing a Powerful Practice Routine," and it's at 4 pm.
+
Tickets for the workshop-only are $25. Tix for the concert-only are $20, and include Bonfield's new CD "Legacy." Combined tickets for both the concert and workshop are $40 and include Bonfield's new album, "Legacy."

8 pm SEVERIN BROWNE and JAMES HURLEY share a double-bill at Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City 90230; 310-398-2583.
+
James tells us, “Severin and I last performed together way back in January for a capacity audience at Beckman Institute Auditorium [at the prestigious Caltech Folk Music Society Series] in Pasadena..... And had a blast! After that show we agreed that if the opportunity arose to do something like that again we'd jump on it. Well, I'm happy to report that opportunity knocked, we listened, and the show will go on!”
+
James continues, “I'll be playing songs from past albums, probably a surprise or two and also a number of songs from the as-yet unfinished new album as well.”
+
SEVERIN BROWNE is a stalwart on the Southern Cal folk music scene, after being the first white songwriter hired by the Motown label. He is a member of the exceptionally talented Browne family, with another accomplished songwriter as a brother, a fella by the name of Jackson Browne.

Sun, Aug 4, near Ojai:
Time tba JOHN REISCHMAN & THE JAYBIRDS plus CINDY KALMENSON & THE LUCKY DUCKS play the "Ojai Concert Series" at Dancing Oak Ranch, located on Hwy 150, a few miles above Lake Casitas.

Dancing Oak Ranch is one of the coolest places to beat the summer heat and a fun place to hear live music. For 6 years, hosts

have been the “go to” spot for outstanding traveling bands and local music lovers looking to enjoy them in the best of outdoor setting. We offer a picturesque amphitheater of green grass under majestic oaks tucked away in a secluded canyon. Our shows feature a beautiful stage, state of the art sound system, an optional potluck, our new treehouse viewing platform and a bonfire at the break.

After hosting the Young Dubliners in May (with over 300 in attendance), our next concert, on Sunday August 4th will feature the Canadian based world-renowned 5-piece band, John Reischman and the Jaybirds as they perform their own creative blend of playful folk and energetic bluegrass, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon under the oaks picnicking with family and friends. The band fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. Members are: John on mandolin, Jim Nunally on guitar, Trisha Gagnon on bass, Nick Hornbuckleon banjo, and Greg Spatz on fiddle.

To see their live show is to believe in magic and their genial blend of story-telling and side-show humor provides the backdrop to their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material. After years of world tours, five critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, its little wonder FolkWax says, “the Jaybirds offer clarity, energy, good ensemble work, classy originals, and an adventurous approach”

Gates will open at 3:00PM and at 4:00PM the opening act will be local Ojai sweetheart Cindy Kalmenson and her band The Lucky Ducks, as she sings heart-felt and funny originals with her distinctive folk/country flavor that has made her a regular favorite with the Ojai Concert Series. So come any time after 3:00PM, bring a dish to share and have a picnic with friends, family and the band on the grass under the oaks. We supply the cups, plates, juice, coffee & water, but it’s B-Y-O-B if you want anything stronger (remember, you’ll still have to drive home, so please drink responsibly). Bring a low-back deck chair, a blanket, a jacket for cooler weather, plus a small flashlight to help find your vehicle after the show and you can even bring friendly, well behaved dogs on a leash.

Tickets are $20 in advance, or at the gate, and kids under 15 years are free. For more info call Shane: (805) 665-8852 For directions to Dancing Oak Ranch or advanced tickets, go to: ojaiconcertseries.com.

Sun, Aug 4, in Altadena:
7 pm THE UKELELE ORCHESTRA OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, a big outfit with small instruments, plus THE SINGER & THE SONGWRITER duo, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Start thinking "Alt Uke" and get ready for something entirely different: The Ukelele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere. Direct from Silverlake and locally grown, there's nothing quite like this 15-20 ukelele “wall of sound” -- at least not in the Southern California area of the Western Hemisphere.
+
But don’t show up expecting a repertoire of lilting Hawaiian melodies. Instead, be prepared to hear unique arrangements and mash-ups, with songs ranging from Radiohead, and David Bowie, to yes, even Led Zeppelin and Dolly Parton.
+
Plus, THE SINGER & THE SONGWRITER, the original duo of RACHEL GARCIA & THU TRAN. "The Singer and The Songwriter is an L.A.-based duo that blends folk and jazz to create a catchy, modern sound inspired by vintage styles." They have played at The House of Blues, "The Eagle Rock Music Festival," and Silverlake Lounge, and are currently working on their debut full-length album. Oh, and this original duo are former members of The Ukelele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere.

Venue impresario Bob Stane says, "Join the resurgence of the ukulele, the happiest instrument in all the hemispheres. See what the buzz is all about this group. Just show up – and you will leave way happier!"
