“Pedal steel orchestra” isn't exactly a phrase you’ve hear very often. Yet, multi-Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer recognized the limitless potential of harnessing the evocative nature of multiple pedal steels to enhance the score of the recently released film, “Man of Steel.” For the project, Mr. Zimmer brought together some of the pedal-steel-world’s finest players at Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage for a series of recordings that make his latest film score absolutely unique.

In celebration of the release of the new Superman movie, the album and the live show, “Men of Steel Guitar,” features the musicians who appeared on the “Man of Steel” score as well as a few talented guests.
+
But this is not a performance of the score. Instead, it is a showcase of the genre-bending nature of the pedal steel as performed by some of the instrument’s most noted players.

Over the last 40 years, these musicians have recorded and/or appeared with a virtual “who’s who” of popular artists, including Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakam, Ray Charles, Glenn Frey, Etta James, Steven Stills, Jose Feliciano, Chuck Berry, Diana Ross, Joe Walsh, George Strait, Freddy Fender, Juanes, Jenni Rivera, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Diamond, Jewel, Glen Campbell, Riders of the Purple Sage, and many others.

The “Men of Steel Guitar” show features each of the steel guitarists doing a solo set, as well as a group performance. The repertoire will span a wide range of musical genres including blues, jazz, country, Latin, and classical.

It should be obvious that this is a rare opportunity to see and hear this talented group of accomplished players all in one place.

On this date in history:

• One year ago, NASA's Mars Curiosity, the largest and most sophisticated robotic rover ever sent to the surface of another world, completed its "eight minutes of terror" atmospheric plunge and landing on the Red Planet. Nominally a two-year mission, it has already achieved its prime goal and determined that yes, Mars did, indeed, once have lakes and oceans of liquid water, and conditions that would have favored the development of life.

• On this date in 1945, the crew of the B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped a single bomb, code named "Little Boy." It was the first atomic bomb used in warfare, and it instantly turned people on the ground and the city of Hiroshima into a fireball hotter than the sun. Altogether, 140,000 people would die from the detonation -- the nuclear chain-reaction-- of that one bomb. It would take a second atomic bomb, dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, to finally compel the Japanese Empire to surrender and bring an end to World War II, the deadliest, most horrific six years in human history. Have we learned anything in the sixty-eight years since?

They'll tell you that throughout history, music has been an important form of communication. Early bards traveled from place to place, singing the news of the times, and keeping tales of heroism and adventure alive. In U.S. history, songs sung on the plantations would let African slaves know when and how to run for freedom. In more modern times, songs have been used to raise social consciousness to the issues of the day. "We Shall Overcome" became the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. Pete Seeger's "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" and Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" were sung by a generation in reaction to an unpopular war. Woody Guthrie's "This Land is your Land" was a response to the fencing-off of the West (and more).

The intent was not "political" in the sense of one party or the other, but a deeper yearning for justice and "right" in a world gone astray. This is the tradition followed by Ranchers For Peace, father-daughter duo Charles and Ray Duncan, from Cambria.
+
Everywhere they have played, including a recent concert in Bakersfield, they have garnered rave reviews for their songs and their entwined vocal and instrumental harmonies that use melodica, harmonica and guitar. Despite their name, they are not involved in the livestock business. In their words, their kind of ranching is done "where worldly concerns combine with empathy and, on a good day, become audible."
+
The "peace" they are "for" is not something that can be directly invoked, they say, but is a by-product that only arises in the presence of other favorable conditions and qualities, such as justice. "Our mission," say these Ranchers For Peace, "is to advocate for such conditions, and to join our noise with the long tradition of folksingers, bards, and troubadours who have done the same." They sing of the great issues facing us today, of immigration, racial tensions, pollution and the excesses of the corporate culture. But their overall message is simply that "it's cool to care."

Charles, a former TV writer, grew up in the 1960s when "music was part of the conversation" about civil rights, the Vietnam War and other social issues of the day.
+
Seventeen-year-old Ray doesn't think it's cool to be detached -- too "chill," in her words -- and she welcomes a chance to demonstrate that a little catharsis is good for the soul, and good for society. "We think and we feel, and often both at the same time. And plenty of people seem to be inclined to join us for the ride," she says.
+

“Pedal steel orchestra” isn't exactly a phrase you’ve hear very often. Yet, multi-Academy Award winning composer Hans Zimmer recognized the limitless potential of harnessing the evocative nature of multiple pedal steels to enhance the score of the recently released film, “Man of Steel.” For the project, Mr. Zimmer brought together some of the pedal-steel-world’s finest players at Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage for a series of recordings that make his latest film score absolutely unique.

In celebration of the release of the new Superman movie, the album and the live show, “Men of Steel Guitar,” features the musicians who appeared on the “Man of Steel” score as well as a few talented guests.

But this is not a performance of the score. Instead, it is a showcase of the genre-bending nature of the pedal steel as performed by some of the instrument’s most noted players.

(We are not interested in plagiarizing from others' comments, and we do include our own here; but we freely use from all we agree with from what was given us by the Hawks. We choose this move for expediency, because it should give our readers an earlier opportunity to decide if they want to make reservations for the show. If you wait for our review of the new record, that would be awhile.)

The new album, on Western Seeds Records (in the US) comes on the heels of the Hawks' latest successful tour of continental Europe and the UK, and the album's overseas release on Blue Rose Records.

I See Hawks In L.A. can be, and had been, variously described as part acoustic nu-folk, part psychedelic country acoustic-and-electric rockers, and as all-Americana. This latest album represents a gathering of their longtime musical tribe with stellar guest contributions from some of California’s finest roots country musicians. The album has already been acclaimed by critics, one ststing it "breathes with a new life that will both refresh and challenge long time fans."

Hawks listeners will be struck by the chances taken in this latest phase of the band's journey — mixing the serious country cred of the band's members, who have played with Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Hazel and Alice, "and in every honky-tonk from Mississippi to Malibu" — with wild lyricism and surreal story telling.

Audra Schroeder of the Austin Chronicle calls the Hawks, "Americana, traversing the landscape of the Golden State like Didion on horseback. It's a divine fusion of humor and twang that's definitely high, but not that lonesome."

This album, "Mystery Drug," burrows deeper down the white rabbit hole. Layered with the electric swagger and sweetness of 1950's rock n roll, songs like "If You Remind Me," "Yesterday's Coffee," and even public service announcement "Stop Driving Like an A**hole," carry the innocent melodies of a different time. Indeed, the whole of "Mystery Drug" carries a lightness in sharp relief to the dark contemplations of last year's all-acoustic "New Kind of Lonely."

Are the Hawks more optimistic these days?  Maybe, or maybe it's just the opposite and they have let go of all the false expectations of genre, or for that matter, career.  There's a freedom here. A weightlessness. Floating on soft beds of reverb and pedal steel, a gentle and rowdy warmth surrounds the entire work, particularly on dreamlike "The River Knows," the final song of the record and perhaps its strongest and most hopeful statement.

"Mystery Drug" cuts a wide swath of post-Gram Parsons California country music: a sardonic / tragic cowpunk essay on commerce-as-love, titled "My Local Merchants"; a haunted accordion theme on a desert marriage ritual, in "One Drop Of Human Blood"; and folk rockers on the vanishing of spirits and aquifers of the American West, in "Sky Island," and "Oklahoma's Going Dry".

Musical guests include pedal steelers Rick Shea (Dave Alvin, Wanda Jackson) and Pete Grant (Grateful Dead, The Dillards, Rodney Crowell).  There's honky-tonk and slide guitar, a Celtic 6/8 on "Death and Ancestry," three memorable love ballads, the signature Hawks' harmonies, and lots of cosmic acousticism. All that combines to make "Mystery Drug" a complex and varied voyage, full of wit and surprises.

I See Hawks In L.A. were founded in 1999 by Minnesotan turned Echo Park dweller Rob Waller and Cal natives Paul and Anthony Lacques. The band has been declared “the city’s premier roots band” by the Los Angeles Times andthe their music “trance-inducing, the stories transfixing, the vibe completely Californian,” by No Depression.

Hawks records have always mixed traditional bar room musings with tales rooted in geography, as in their treatments of the mating dances of whales, the life of Senator Byrd from West Virginia, a Humboldt pot grower’s flight to Tibet, boom-and-bust in guitarist Lacques’s Mojave desert homeland, wandering hippie caravans, and the imminent collapse of suburban Houston.  In 2002, the Hawks were decidedly ahead of the curve in condemning the Bush administration’s drums of war.

Despite this out-on-a-limb perch, I See Hawks In L.A. have been embraced by legends of contemporary country, requested as an opener by Lucinda Williams and Chris Hillman (who plays on ‘06’s album, "California Country," hitting the Americana Charts, #2 on XM radio’s alt country, and with three #1’s on the "Freeform American Roots Chart."  They’ve toured the U.S. many times, and just completed their fourth return to continental Europe and the UK, May 22-July 8.
