♪ NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS PLAYING LAST SHOWS FEATURING BARRY McGUIRE
THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS featured the great BARRY McGUIRE on some of their biggest hits. There are just two final appearances by Barry McGuire with The New Christy Minstrels, on Nov 2 in Cerritos, and on Nov 16 in Palm Desert. Info and ticket links for both are below.
In addition, an appearance on November 4 by Minstrels leader Randy Sparks, with Becky Jo, says Bob Stane, “maybe a lot of the members of The New Christy Minstrels, joining Randy & Becky Jo,” at The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena.

Bob Stane goes waaaay back with all these legendary folk artists. He says, “These shows are a very big deal, folks. Loaded with musical and comedic talent and on the cusp of musical history and legend. Always. By the way, in the early days of The New Christy Minstrels, I had a lot to do with furnishing Randy with individuals in the group. My clubs, the Upper Cellar and the Ice House, nurtured many, many later members of this fantastic group. Randy will tell stories of these days from then until the introduction of Vecca The Show Dog.”

♪ “SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – THE STORY OF HALLOWEEN & CELTIC TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL
The Guide looks forward to this one every year. And on Sunday, November 2nd, you’ll get two chances to enjoy it, at 3 & 7 pm, with both shows in the SFV (North Hollywood).
They’ve played a lot with the title this year, and no wonder, because this is a very full show of Irish music and dance, together with storytelling and performed scenes. Producer Aedan MacDonnell, who also performs, tells us, “The Dead Do Tell Tales, told through song, story, music and dance.” It’s produced through her company, Celtic Rhythms, at the Mayflower Club, 11110 Victory Bl, N Hollywood 91606.
Samhain: (pronounced sow-in, like the pig) is a Celtic Halloween extravaganza. You'll hear tales of the true origins of the Jack O' the Lantern, of ghostly encounters, and the origins of All Hallows' Eve, told with high energy Irish dances, traditional Celtic tunes that will bewitch your feet and keep your toes a-tappin', ghostly love songs that will rip your heart out, and exciting dances with real swords and axe handles with the dancers in very close proximity to one another. The promo asserts, “You won't want it to end!” That’s true. It’s that good.
Aedan says, “This year we have a new line-up in outstanding musicians, as well as those that have been with the show from year one. And we also have an official Samhain song, written by Padraic Conroy, one of our new additions. He wrote two songs for the show, one is previewed on our website.”
You can enjoy that one at http://celtic-rhythms.com/samhain

Toulouse says; ““To pursue a career as a solo guitarist you need to be somewhat of masochist, contortionist and just a little bit crazy, but honestly I still consider it a real honor to be recognized as a fingerstyle guitar legend even if it doesn’t always pay the bills!” This concert is the first of a series of many shows to promote Toulouse Engelhardt’s highly anticipated new recording entitled, ” L’Esprit Jardins” distributed internationally by MVD Entertainment Group. This collection of 13 novelettes spans the vast spectrum of musical form and is a plethora of eclectic guitar virtuosity. Included in this sonic odyssey, will be original compositions for 12-String and Spanish Guitar, encapsulating the guitarist’s signature lightning fast “free-form “guitar style, atonal experimentation and melodic fantasias! “Anyone drawn to Fahey and Kottke will immediately gravitate to Toulouse Engelhardt, an especially brilliant and gifted guitarist.”…L.A. Times Sharing the bill, will be legendary Singer/songwriter John York. John will be performing some of his signature songs along with his brilliant renditions of some of the classic hits of the Sixties. Legendary rock and roll producer Kim Fowley is quoted as saying…“John York is the last great silver voice of the Sixties.” “A living legend, equally as talented as his peers Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges”…Alan Fark; Minor 7th.com

“One of my all time favorite guitar players!” -- David Lindley, of Toulouse’s live performance.
+
“Toulouse Engelhardt plays the guitar with such dexterity that it sounds like the man has at least 15 fingers! He is a showcase of technical brilliance and a master in both composition and performance!” -- Richard Foss; All Music Guide.

Brophy Dale has gained a widespread respect for his passionate roots-rockin' guitar and vocals. He's played all over the world, from Moscow to Melbourne, Anchorage to Zurich. lived in Texas to Africa, but now calls Southern California home. He honed his guitar chops in the Midwest, mostly Ann Arbor/Detriot area in countless Rock, R'n B, Blues, Oldies, and Country bands that set him on a journey and has taken him from local bar guitar hero to an international recognized performer. Brophy's first big moment came when he got to back up the late great Memphis soul singer, O.V. Wright (Nickel and a Nail) for a few gigs. Moving out West in the late 80s, Brophy worked/toured with Robert Lucas of Canned Heat, Smokey Wilson, Joe Houston, & King Ernest to name a few, on the Southern California blues scene. He's also had the opportunity to work with some of his heroes, which include Dave Edmunds, Delbert McClinton and a few tours with Scotty Moore. The last ten years Brophy has worked steadily with Alligator recording artist Lee Rocker, a Rockabilly/Americana cat who came to fame in the '80s as bassist for the wildly popular Stray Cats. He's recorded six records, with co-writes on the last three and been on several compilation records with Lee also. Brophy's playing can be heard and on sound tracks for Kids ESPN in Japan to placement on TV shows with Lee, Numbers and the WB show Supernatural. The Brophy Dale Band is a rocking blues trio that plays in Southern California featuring Dave Gore on bass and vocals, Dave Kida on the drums and Brophy on guitars and vocals.

THE SMOKING JACKETS with HEIDI SWEDBERG are described as “Sophisticated, Educated, Medicated.” The Smoking Jackets are a band of virtuoso multi-instrumentalists who bring their brilliance and bon-vivance to the smallest and hippest strings- the ukulele. Daniel Ward, John Bartlit and Craig McClelland team up with actress Heidi Swedberg for some serious music and comedy. Their repitoire includes twisted takes on jazz, classical, avant-guard, flamenco and pop standards. It's a Pink Martini shaken by Victor Borge and served to Dean Martin...with a twist!

Brit Rodriguez, an emerging singer and songwriter, is known for her soulful, smoky voice that beautifully contrasts with the bright, colorful sound of her ukulele. As a musician, she is renowned for her lyrical content and melodic prowess. As a performer, audiences are captivated by her unique sense of humor and down to Earth personality. Influenced by late fifties R&B and nineties dance music, Brit is a hybrid of the raw, youthful energy of today and the great soul and folk divas of the past.

I Hear Voices! is a unique vocal quartet from Tucson, Arizona, that was formed in early 2012 by Bobby Kimmel, founder of The Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt, and McCabe's first concert director. Relying on uplifting material and lush vocal harmonies, they mix about half original songs with songs by other contemporary writers like Ruth Moody of the Wailin' Jennys and Gillian Welch. Their vocal sound changes with the styles of the songs they sing, from soft jazz to modern bluegrass, with interesting stops in between. Tracy Newman, who started at McCabe's playing guitar with Ricky Jay back in the day, is a Peabody- and Emmy-winning writer (Cheers, Ellen, According to Jim) who has now returned to her first career choice, folksinger. With her natural narrative, Tracy's songs are funny takes on family and insightful notes on living. Her band is top-notch, and the music is, too. What's not to like?
+
Tracy Newman, whose music career began when she was the youngest-ever member of the New Christy Minstrels, has gone on to earn an Emmy and a Peabody Award for her television writing. She’s still working on a Grammy for the trifecta.

In an epic journey of crossing borders, Medea, a Mexican seamstress with extraordinary skill, is running from a past filled with betrayals. With husband Jason and their son in tow, our storied heroine’s struggle to adapt takes a disastrous toll when old and new worlds meet in the City of the Angels. Alfaro's stunning contemporary take on the Greek myth tackles family, tradition, culture and the explosive moment when they all collide.

7:30 pm KEN O'MALLEY and THE KOLES headline, plus THE HARMONISTAS, at the "FIRESIDE CONCERT SERIES" at Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Rd (at Borchard), Newbury Park.
+
HARMONISTAS: The joint is always jumpin’ when the Harmonistas hit the scene. Sally Charette, Janice Gelencser, Louise Dobbs and Launice Walker are back again with a set that is 90% new to Fireside. These four diverse talents apply their unique harmonies to fresh arrangements of blues, rock, acapella, doo wop, gospel and folk. They hail from the four corners of the greater Los Angeles area, but the passion for harmony that brought them together is too powerful to resist. Just try to pin them down to traditional harmony parts –it can’t be done! Each Harmonista likes to play the harmonic field, finding the right combination for each song. The Harmonistas have played Fireside Concerts, Gelencser House Concerts in Claremont, Chuck’s Place concerts, Noble House, Chuck’s Place and Butler’s Coffee House. salcharette@aol.com
+
KEN O’MALLEY: As a solo artist, Ken O’Malley easily commands the room; Quickly drawing the audience in, it is no wonder that the Irish News describes him “without question, as the single most enduring, influential and proficient of all Irish musicians in Southern California” and the University of St. Thomas at Houston acknowledges him to be "widely regarded as the finest Irish folk singer/songwriter in the United States today." In Dublin at the age of 15, he opened for legendary balladeer Paddy Reilly at the equally legendary Old Sheiling Pub. His fluency in the Gaelic language was earned from his education by the Christian Brothers and his summers in the West of Ireland. A true ambassador of Irish culture, he infuses every performance with the rich history of his native land and audiences quickly become engaged with his compelling stories. One show producer put it this way: “He holds nothing back. Whether singing a passionate ballad, playing a solo on the mandolin, or explaining the gloriously sad history of Erin his homeland, Ken O’Malley is all-in, wide open to the world, and as true as an arrow’s flight.” Another simply stated that “Ken O'Malley connected with our audience in a way none of our other artists have.” kenomalley.com

THE KOLES: The Koles are a folk pop trio with Arlene Kole, Bill Kole and Jim Rolfe.whose original songs and vocal arrangements captivate audiences everywhere. With roots in the progressive bluegrass sounds of Nickel Creek and harmonies that harkens back to the Manhattan Transfer and beyond, the Koles challenge modern day pop antics with streamlined brilliance in their musically stimulating offerings. Their performances caused them to be recognized in Music Connection Magazine’s Top 100 Live Acts in the USA for both 2009 & 2012. Past performances include Russ & Julie’s House Concerts, Thousand Oaks Library and the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. More at www.thekolesmusic.com

"LAUREN ADAMS BAND This is an all-star outfit, from superb songwriter / band leader LAUREN ADAMS to PHIL PARLAPIANO on keys and accordion and MARK ‘POCKET’ GOLDBERG on bass. This is easily one of L.A.’s top ten electric Americana bands, and Lauren’s originals should be hit songs. Their rendition of ERNEST TROOST’S ‘Evangeline’ with Lauren’s vocals is powerful and compelling and very different from the classic blues ballad delivery that Ernest gives it. Lauren’s song ‘Thirsty, ’ title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock. Each band member got a featured song, since all are singer-songwriters with solo albums and dozens of credits on records by big names. Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly ‘Americana Music Circle’ showcase at Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles." -- Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide.

5:30 pm (Pacific) JULIE CHRISTENSEN performs online.
+
Julie says, "Join us this evening LIVE ONLINE! Click the link and sign on for free... our concert is pay what you want, starting at only $1. There will be a live chatroom going, though we won't be taking requests. You will love my new band."
+
"On three tours, Julie Christensen helped share Leonard Cohen's music with the world. She's also sung with Steve Wynn, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Lou Reed, and Van Dyke Parks. With Chris D., she headed up post-punk rockers Divine Horsemen. Others utilizing Julie's talents have been as far-flung as Iggy Pop, PiL, Robben Ford, and k.d. lang. The newest album is 2007's folk-rock 'Where the Fireworks Are.' The other recent one is 'Something Familiar,' a collection of standards and blues. Stone Cupid's earlier two acclaimed independent albums are a soulful hybrid of roots and folk. Julie was a featured member of the Cohen song projects produced by Hal Willner. The 'Came So Far for Beauty' concerts (on which the documentary film 'I'm Your Man' was partly based) had four installments over 4 years. In Dublin, Julie performed a fiery Joan of Arc with Lou Reed." -- from the NASHVILLE SCENE, July 2014.
+
There are plenty of great singer-songwriters in East Nashville, but very few with a résumé that rivals Julie Christensen’s. Christensen, who moved to Music City from Los Angeles a year ago, was a member of renowned ’80s L.A. punk band The Divine Horsemen (with then-husband Chris Desjardins), followed by a lengthy stint in Leonard Cohen’s band. ...She’s worked with Iggy Pop, Public Image Ltd, Todd Rundgren, k.d. lang and more.
+
Suffice to say, she’s got cred.
+
Her 2012 album, "Weeds Like Us" is an intoxicating blend of gritty roots rock and old-school soul. Highlights include the lead track “Restless,” a steamy dose of bubbling country funk; the moody ballad “Outside”; and the swampy, yearning “Call Me Up.”
+
"Christensen may be new to town, but she wasted no time finding a stellar backing band, including guitarists Sergio Webb and Chris Tench, bassist Bones Hillman and drummer Steve Latanation. Reckless Johnny Wales opens." -- JACK SILVERMAN, July 2014.

News Feature #1...
REVIEW: TAYLOR SWIFT's "1989" PERFORMANCE ON TV's GMA, Oct 30, 2014
So, TAYLOR SWIFT brought her legs that stretch into next week and did ABC's "Good Morning America" show this morning to promote her new album. She has gone pop – yes, even more pop than Nashville's supposed country.
That new album is "1989," and it's supposed to be a return to a time when pop was more musical, rather than droll and atonal or, most recently, with the characteristics of an amp short-circuiting and somebody being electrocuted.
Our only experience with Swift's new/retro album was this morning's live performance.
Retro? There are recessive genes of Devo and Blondie in the DNA, and her dancers have moves from another time. Even though Swift's own stage gestures emulate rap's gang-twit hand signs as much as anything.
So, what sound does it have?
Things were overwhelming percussive in that relentless, monotonously simplistic pop style, and every opportunity to borrow from rock's pantheon of great drum riffs was scrupulously ignored.
But mostly, what characterized her performance (along with her legs) was that her lyrics were unintelligibly inscrutable. Her opener, the album's first track, seemed to be semi-understandable, until you learn that it was her self-proclaimed anthem of her "new life," post-Nashville, titled "Welcome to New York." But it seemed to come-out as "Weh-come to the young-young-young-young." Go figure.
Was it the sound engineering on ABC's outdoor stage? Read on.
Along with misheard lyrics there, and lyrics that were entirely gibberish elsewhere, there was another dominance: the combination of keys and chords and octaves and what those did with/to her vocals? Well, the most descriptive word is, "annoying." Somebody is tone deaf, and it isn't me.
A bit of background. I must say that Taylor Swift's trademark country stage shtick, that thing of deer-in-the-headlights, "Home Alone" movie poster "surprise," is something she overplayed for so many years that it long ago transcended "Oh, please." Yet, from the time I learned she would be going pop in a retro style with "1989," I thought, "Pop music used to be better. A lot better. She's a big star with a big following. This could be a good thing. Maybe we'll get melodies back. Maybe harmonies, too. Maybe this ubiquitous godawful pulse-wave electronica crap will become passé. She could be the one to do it."
This morning, she did feature some nice, if brief, vocal harmonies of those inscrutable lyrics with her backup singer-dancers. And if that putzy pounding percussion hadn't been so over-the-top in the mix, there were some melody lines in there better than recent pop.
We're left with one impression, applicable on multiple points: this morning on GMA was squandered opportunity after two years of work to redefine herself. So, maybe we'll catch some tracks from the finished album. Maybe. But after hearing it live, we won't go out of the way to do it.

HALLOWEEN’s CELTIC ORIGINS
From “Zydecobrad’s S/C Cajun & Zydeco 823rd Newsletter,”
a great source for Cajun music and zydeco dance events
Halloween or Hallowe'en (/ˌhæləˈwiːn, -oʊˈiːn, ˌhɑːl-/; a contraction of "All Hallows' Evening"), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day.
It initiates the triduum of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. Within Allhallowtide, the traditional focus of All Hallows' Eve revolves around the theme of using "humor and ridicule to confront the power of death.”
According to many scholars, All Hallows' Eve is a Christianized feast initially influenced byCeltic harvest festivals, with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic Samhain. Other scholars maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots.
[The Guide’s past research found Samhain to be the root of Halloween, and centuries of obfuscation by the Catholic church, which famously co-opted dozens of pagan feast and celebration days, naming them after various saints or events in Christian folklore to create all-encompassing Christian dominion over cultures being Christianized.]

(reprised from last week)
SUNDAY: “SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – MUSIC & TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL
The Guide heartily endorses this show, which has become an annual tradition on the Southern Cal arts scene. We recommend you get tix right away, as it will likely sell-out. And we recommend you opt for the “Preferred” seats, because the venue has a flat floor.

Tickets for the 3 pm show are $15 general seating, $18 Preferred Seating

SERVICES ARE SATURDAY FOR THE LATE BRUCE FRANZEN,
Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Board Member
By Michele Marotta, Guide correspondent
Bruce Franzen August 9, 1950 – October 15, 2014
I received a text message on Sunday, October 19, 2014 advising that Bruce Franzen had passed away. I first met Bruce in 1972. Over time, we lost contact, and then reconnected in 1991. We were friends ever since. Bruce was an "older brother" to me, helping me move once and he must have thought he was constantly rescuing me from bad relationships.
Bruce was past president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, and together with his wife Jackie, the two have been organizers and volunteers on the roots music scene for many years.
Bruce's eyes would light up when Jackie's name was mentioned, and he was the love of her life.
Bruce was especially active with an annual event where he played a key role, the Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival. It’s a landmark event held every May at the old western-town movie set at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a site administered by the National Park Service. The couple’s other involvements include the acoustic music series held at the Airtel Hotel, along with a variety of folk, bluegrass and western music events.
The Topanga Banjo•Fiddle website still includes his autobiographical paragraph as a board member: "Hello, my name is Bruce Franzen and I'm a native Californian, born in the San Fernando Valley. I attended my first Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest in 1967 and after that I was hooked. Soon I began playing mandolin at the Blue Ridge Pickin' Parlor and then at Topanga itself in 1983. I am now serving on the Board of Directors of the contest. Currently I'm employed by the City of Los Angeles and since 1989 have volunteered for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce. I am a past president of that organization. I look forward to helping to make this year's Topanga Banjo•Fiddle Contest the most enjoyable ever. See you there!"
Those who saw Bruce at Topanga over those many years will carry fond memories of interactions with him.
I spoke to Bruce’s wife, now widow, Jackie, just after his passing. Jackie told me that she and Bruce had been together over 26 years. They were married for more than fourteen of those years.
In addition, Jackie shared, "Bruce and I were co-Presidents of the Jaycees at the same time. Bruce was also very active in elections and worked our precinct for a number of years. We did everything together. I love him so much."
Bruce had a very diverse working career. Initially, he was a plumber by trade. Bruce also worked for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks Department for two years before he went to work for the LAPD Motor Transport Division.
About 18 months ago, Bruce told me his kidneys were failing. He came to my office and spoke to the attorney I where I worked at that time; the attorney had undergone a kidney transplant several years ago. The attorney, Mr. Gold, spoke to Bruce for almost two hours, explaining the pros and cons of dialysis, and suggested he look for a kidney donor.
Bruce was on dialysis several times a week, and last week, he succumbed to septicemia.
Bruce leaves behind his lovely wife, Jackie, their cat, and numerous relatives and friends, including his many music friends. All of whom will miss him.
If you have a story to share about Bruce, email Joy Felt (bgraskal1@earthlink.net) and she will incorporate it into Bruce’s special memory book for Jackie.
Services are Saturday, November 1, at 10 am in the chapel at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen St, Chatsworth, CA 91311; 818-341-0344.
Joy Felt will host a musical celebration for “A Life Well Lived” following the ceremony. Jackie has requested that you bring your instruments to celebrate Bruce’s love of music.

LATE ADDITION...
Thu, Oct 30, ON THE WEB:

SUNDAY: “SAMHAIN! A CELTIC HALLOWEEN” – MUSIC & TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL
The Guide heartily endorses this show, which has become an annual tradition on the Southern Cal arts scene. We recommend you get tix right away, as it will likely sell-out. And we recommend you opt for the “Preferred” seats, because the venue has a flat floor.

(updated from original that ran last week.)

Evan Marshall is one of the preeminent mandolinists in the world. Renowned for his stunning duo-style playing, he is a true virtuoso, and his jaw-dropping rendition of The William Tell Overture as a solo piece is legendary to mandolin enthusiasts worldwide. John Marshall, also a virtuoso of his craft, has wowed audiences for more than 25 years with his unique and incomparable melodic / rhythmic slap bass style. Duane Michaels, known for his dynamic and masterful solos, is widely considered to be on of Bluegrass’ most authentic and innovative fiddle players. Rounding out the MMB line-up is bassist /vocalist, Michelle Lynskey, who has been a featured performer on film and television soundtracks for more than 20 years, and was also a world championship Irish Dancer. Individually, they’ve performed all over the world, and at prestigious venues such as the HOLLYWOOD BOWL, various POPS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS, and have been featured performers in radio, television and film, including A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION with GARRISON KEILLOR, and HBO’S series, BIG LOVE. They are now delighted to be combining their talents and expertise to create this incredible, one-of-a-kind band. This wonderful show consists of unique and exciting musical arrangements that incorporate hints of jazz, classical and swing with traditional Bluegrass, and includes such innovative elements as double double slap-bassing, blazing fiddle duets, driving Bluegrass tunes, amazing vocals and harmonies, and powerful step dancing. Add in the joy and camaraderie of these long time friends, and you have an evening of fun and music you won’t soon forget.
