+
He is a champion Hawai’ian slack key guitarist, and he brings an omnibus of skills. Bob Stane says, “Roast Pig & pale poi will be discussed but not on the fare for this night.”
+
Weird Al” Yankovic and Kimo have starred on all the tv shows....Tonight Show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The View , Craig Ferguson, Conan OʻBrien and movie scores. He has a nice tan from the lights on these TV shows.
+
Award-winnning slack key guitarist, Jim "Kimo" West brings his annual Holiday Slack Key Show to The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Drawing on material from his two acclaimed holiday CDʻs, Kimoʻs slack key artistry brings the essence of the islands to holiday classics, traditional Hawaiian folk music and hapa haole standards.
+
Joining Kimo will be violinist Tom Atwater, vocalist Diana Tanaka, and traditional hula dancer Amanda Taketa.
+
Kimo is regarded as one of the world’s foremost “ki ho’alu” or Hawaiian “slack key” guitar artists. This warm and engaging acoustic guitar style has it’s roots in 1840’s Hawaii, when Mexican vaqueros first brought guitars to the Big Island of Hawaii. If you saw the Oscar-winning film, “The Decendants” you have experienced this great acoustic guitar tradition. Best known as long-time guitarist for the worldʻs most successful musical comedy artist, “Weird Al” Yankovic. Kimoʻs career has seen three Grammyʻs, many gold and platinum awards and most recently a Billboard #1 CD with their latest release, “Mandatory Fun” as well as many national tours and TV appearances such as the Tonight Show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The View , Craig Ferguson, Conan OʻBrien and many more. Kimo is a 2008 winner of the Hawaii Music Awards and two-time Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian ‘Grammy’) nominee. He is also a two-time winner of the LA Treasures Award for his efforts in keeping this important acoustic guitar tradition alive.
+
"For those burned out on hearing the same Christmas tunes every year, West has provided a radiant alternative. “Jingle Bell Rock” is suitably upbeat but magical. West has revived the sense of wonder which once fueled the track....given the slack-key guitar treatment, it sounds fresh and alive. “Sleigh Ride” swings from a spellbinding web of instrumental wizardry. “Away in a Manger” is turned into a fragile lullaby. One can imagine the snowflakes gradually falling in the stunningly beautiful “The Christmas Song.” West’s playing throughout the CD is enchanting and atmospheric, capturing the wintry beauty of the holiday like few have done in the last couple of decades" ~ Stacy Zering, No Depression.

PATRICK “PARAQUAT” KELLEY was a pivotal person in rock history, and key figure in the craziness, good times, and socially and politically influential content that accompanied great music, live performance-interviews, pyrotechnic ambush explosions in the studio. He wrote and delivered the weekly “Fish Report with a Beat” and “Dirk Canyon, M.D” (the satire of every soap opera that ever was, and the place that introduced the legendary “Doctor Leon” – abba-loot-lee), and so much more. Now, Paraquat is suffering from MS, a severe debilitating disease, and he and his wife need our help to defray his huge medical expenses. So former KMET air staffers JIM LADD, CYNTHIA FOX, and JEFF GONZER are joining lots of musicians in a big benefit for their friend and former colleague. If you remember that wonderfully wacky counter-culture that was KMET, here’s your chance to re-live it for a night and do some good for one who brought us all so much unique and memorable entertainment during a previous era of dark political times.

This traveling exhibition pairs, for the first time, approximately 150 works by American pho-tographers Paul Caponigro (b. 1932) and Bruce Davidson (b. 1933), enlightened observers of Britain and Ireland in the 1960s and ’70s. For Caponigro, Ireland and Britain became sites of creative energy to which he returned repeatedly. Davidson brought the same gritty street sensibility that had made his Brooklyn Gang series a sensation among photograph collectors. The exhibition examines the artistic, social, and historical forces informing two master pho-tographers as they bring American eyes to enduring landscapes and changing cultural scenes.

“Red Beard” is set in a public hospital serving the indigent in rural, feudal Japan. The 1965 film asks profound humanist and existential questions relating to social injustice. Is there a way out of the dispiriting cycle in which victims express their pain by hurting others? How can we break cycles of suffering and violence? “Red Beard” is the last black-and-white film by Kurosawa, and the last Kurosawa film starring legendary Japanese actor TOSHIRO MIFUNE.
+
The screening is presented in conjunction with a live stage performance the FOLLOWING NIGHT by LOS ANGELES POVERTY DEPARTMENT (“LAPD”), the renowned theatre troupe made up of homeless and formerly homeless artists, with the theatre company celebrating its own 30th anniversary. The other half of USC’s “RED BEARD / RED BEARD” presentation:

If the phrase "male a cappella group" conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses ... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. They're performing on the heels of the release of Under The Influence, their fourth album release through Atlantic Records. The album features contributions from superstars Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas, Phil Collins, Dolly Parton and more! Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense ... and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act.
