Greetings, fellow survivors. And this time, that means all of us.
Y'see, Thursday morning, an ASTEROID went screaming by, just 26,000 miles over Antarctica. For comparison, the Moon is 240,000 miles away. So this one was about as near to grazin' the hair on the back of your neck as a near miss can get!
Of course, nothing in space actually "screams." All those zaps and explosions in your favorite fantasy space movie? The expensive sound effects are what makes those movies fantasies instead of science fiction. Because space is a vacuum. And sound cannot travel in a vacuum. But asteroids can. And they do get loud 'n rowdy if they break into Earth's atmosphere. Just ask the dinosaurs.
Since we survived (this time), we have plenty of reason to celebrate. (As long as we don't think about corporate-controlled politicians whom deny that climate change can do-us-in as easily as an asteroid strike. But even though Halloween is coming up, we'll save that scare for another time.) So, let's celebrate the joy of being alive this weekend. Tunefully and artfully and fulfillingly. Except that so many choices of wonderfully fun things to do, well, that does make things challenging. So spin your roulette wheel — but don't throw a dart. Your computer screen wouldn't like that. And let's not get ahead of ourselves. First you need to survey all the choices. And dive into the music news.
So, let's get started!
First, it's a BIG weekend of FESTIVALS! A gen-you-wine "don't-stay-home" sorta weekend. Especially since some of what's good is also FREE, and what's not free is especially good.
You might recall as how Horace Greeley said "Go West." We say it's a time you can venture in 'purt near any direction and find tuneful satisfaction and get a tan from all the artful exposure.
Beyond that? If'n all that doesn't motivate you, try these alternative metaphors:
Our trainload of MUSIC NEWS has helper engines. Needed 'em, or we couldn't have gotten it all to you while it's still news, instead of just information. And plenty of what's whistling in on THIS express is as fresh n' timely as the best produce in an organic farmers' market. Which, in old railroad terms, was transported in block-ice refrigerator cars called reefers. And that's not madness. Just a tasty, fresh-picked cargo of music news, picked at the height of tunefulness.

Annual "DESERT DAZE" at the Institute of Mentalphysics, 59700 Twentynine Palms Hwy, Joshua Tree, CA 92252; 760-365-3880; www.mentalphysics.net
* This one defies genre classification. It gets listed as Alternative, Avant-Garde, Chamber Music, DJ, EDM, Electronica, Garage Rock, Indie, Music Festivals, Pop, Psychedelic, Punk, R&B, Rock, Shoegaze.
* We list it primarily because that list includes Chamber Music, though that seems dubious.
* LA Weekly writer Falling James describes it thusly: "There are other desert festivals, but there’s something unique about Desert Daze, now in its sixth year. The Joshua Tree fest has more of a psychedelic emphasis, which combines with the austere setting at the spiritually themed Institute of Mentalphysics for a potentially transcendent experience. Friday is helmed by such festival-circuit regulars as Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, hard-rock earthmover Ty Segall and psych-pop dandy Ariel Pink, but things expand fully on Saturday with a rare visitation from arty chamber-rock provocateur and Velvet Underground icon John Cale, juxtaposed with the trance-like spirals of new-music visionary Terry Riley and the primal soul-punk eviscerations of Iggy Pop. The magic deepens Sunday with Spiritualized’s electric glam euphoria and Death Valley Girls’ punk-pop ferocity, while shadowy fuzz trio L.A. Witch set the stage for the cottony dream pop of their reclusive inspiration, Hope Sandoval. With Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, Badbadnotgood, Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Liars, Boris, La Femme, Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions, John Maus, Ian Svenonius, Deap Vally, Aldous Harding, Drinks, MNDSGN, Froth, Emel Mathlouthi, Prettiest Eyes, Starcrawler and others."

As time went by, the boys added a banjo playing paint store manager named Mike Kelly. * "The American Cinematheque launches German Currents, a festival celebrating some of the choicest films to emerge from Germany over the last year. Things get rolling with a red-carpet gala presentation of Tiger Girl, the story of a young wallflower (Maria-Victoria Dragus) who gets schooled by a street-tough gal named Tiger (Ella Rumpf). * Singer-songwriter John West (who personally prefers the term ‘professional emoter’) has been part of the Los Angeles music community for a pretty good while now. Hailing from Baton Rouge, West’s sound combines the soulful influence of his home state with his love for sad, pretty things, muted bass lines, and plastic egg shakers. He is also a veteran of the Santa Monica Promenade, where he sold more than a few CDs on the streets, eventually resulting in a record deal which resulted in collaborations with the likes of Pusha T and Big Sean. Jaded, moderately broken Hollywood dreams ensued, including an attempt to rebrand as Public School (kudos to KCRW for the “Don’t Wake Me Up” spins). Eventually West walked away from music for close to three years. And now it’s 2017. John realized, “Holy hell. Let me just have some fun again!” With that pronouncement, West is back with some familiar players, some vibed-out tunes, and a couple of new stories about getting unstuck and doing that thing you love to do most in the world. Almost sounds like a movie.

His music continues to be covered today. But there's no experience quite like seeing this dynamic performer delivering his spellbinding songs in person. Singing alone, with just his acoustic guitar, Lind is edgy, fearless and passionate onstage. His songs hit the heart like a wrecking ball. He has the rare ability to make audiences laugh and cry – often at the same time. His obvious love of performing and rapport with his audiences create an atmosphere of rare intimacy.

* For the series' October edition, The Roadhouse Series honors the great American roots-tradition of Rockabilly. With Patrick Carrico at the helm, we will explore the diversity and influence of this great American music.
* Rockabilly is often defined as a fusion of country music and rhythm & blues. Much of it would be called rock ‘n’ roll. But, rockabilly held its own distinction and remained an influential genre of music from its early origins in the late 1940s, to today. Early champions and considered its founding fathers include Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. But, it can be heard in the Central California sound of Maddox Brothers and Rose, and later from Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran. Rockabilly soon seeped into the national consciousness and could be heard in songs by artists as diverse as Queen, Linda Ronstadt and the Beatles. It was embraced by the Punk movement of the 70s and 80s morphing into today’s popular psychobilly. So, put on your blue suede dancing shoes and let’s have a rockabilly party!
* Artists for this show include M/C and Artist-in-Residence, the face of The Roadhouse Series, Patrick Carrico. Also included will be Roadhouse alumni, Kassidy Heal, Susan Sheller, Levi Petree, Coyote Moon, with special guests, Chad Watson, Pam Loe, Jeffery Paul Ross and Matt Lesser.

7 pm GABE DIXON plays the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
* Gabe Dixon released his sophomore solo album, Turns To Gold, on April 8th, 2016. Produced by Paul Moak, engineered by Devin Vaughan, and mastered by Brad Blackwood, the LP marks Gabe’s first official collection as an independent artist. Following the release of 2011’s One Spark, the Nashville-based troubadour changed almost everything. He was focused on starting from scratch, and parted ways with his longtime management and record label, Concord Music Group. The one thing that didn’t change was that honest, heartfelt approach to songwriting that countless fans fell in love with when he first emerged in 1999. Throughout his career, many other notable artists have taken note of and supported Gabe’s immense talents. He’s opened for and toured with the likes of Loggins & Messina, Gavin DeGraw and Delta Rae, as well as held side gigs as the keyboardist and vocalist for Paul McCartney, Alison Krause & Union Station, O.A.R. and Supertramp. His songs have received placements on major television shows including Parks and Recreation, Grey’s Anatomy, and Vampire Diaries, and his song “Find My Way” served as the title for the box office hit The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock. Fans have seen him perform twice on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, as well as The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and on festival stages everywhere from Bonnaroo to High Sierra Music Festival. However, it’s with Turns To Gold that listeners will hear Gabe Dixon as he always meant.

* A David Gans "solo electric" performance is likely to consist of several elements: country-blues-style fingerpicking; loop-based improvisations created live in the moment; sweetly-sung ballads, original or borrowed; Grateful Dead songs reinterpreted to suit his voice and guitar; wry observations of the music-festival subculture and the larger world; soulful and passionate political commentary; favorites from the folk-rock canon of the last 50 years. Mix and match - it's never the same show twice, but it's always worth a listen. With Craig Marshall of Cubensis

* Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Grateful Dead music today and an accomplished guitarist, singer and songwriter in his own right, David Gans has now shared with us his own well-crafted and heartfelt interpretations of some of the Grateful Dead’s best songs on It’s a Hand- Me-Down, released November 27th, 2015 on his Perfectible Recordings label.
* Gans approaches Grateful Dead music with a unique range and a rare degree of mastery on multiple levels: as a noted writer (his most recent volume, This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead [Nov 2015], co-authored with Blair Jackson, presents the definitive story of the Grateful Dead in their own words), commentator, and radio-show host he has introduced, contextualized, and exposed Grateful Dead music to generations of Deadheads and casual fans. As a musician, singer, and impresario he has brought the music to life in solo and ensemble configurations. As an interviewer and documentor, he has chronicled the Grateful Dead experience from a kaleidoscopic array of perspectives, as an insider, an outsider, and a songsmith. It’s a Hand-Me- Down sets some of the Dead tunes Gans most enjoys performing in a “solo electric” context closely modeled on his performance style, making extensive use of looping and electronics to bring the sort of shimmery elastic feel required to do this material justice. A “solo electric” performer combining original material with interpretations of songs from various sources, strong vocals, and layered instrumentals using a looping device, all in service of the song.

8 pm Monthly "CAMARILLO CAFÉ CONCERT SERIES" brings a superb billing of JAMES HURLEY plus LOIS BLAISCH AND FRIENDS, at Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St, Camarillo, CA 93010; http://camarillocafe.com; 805-814-9366.
* The Guide is a big fan of both these artists, having had them perform (separately) multiple times on the old "Tied to the Tracks" broadcast radio show when it aired from los Angeles.
* JAMES HURLEY was described by the Guide's editor, writing in Folkworks Magazine, as “One of the Top Ten Live Acoustic Male Singer Songwriters in L.A.” James Hurley’s eloquent guitar, smooth voice and masterful writing combine in a jazzy, bluesy, pop-folk that has been called “Americana, on-the-rocks…with a twist”.
* Here is an excerpt of a review the series booker wrote after seeing JAMES HURLEY live for the very first time, eight years ago, long before the two became good friends: “What do you say to describe a force of nature or a mirage of an enigma? How do you relate something you've never experienced before?.... one of the most unique performers I've ever seen… his music almost defies description at times.... reminds one of a diverse palette of genres from Hoagy Carmichael to OingoBoingo to Delta blues and all points in between. He is both a reviewer's delight and a nightmare to try to describe. His songs range from the perfectly-over-the-top 'The Vampire Song'... about the vampires of [the music industry in] Southern California [to] 'Mushroom,' where the real house of horrors comes with a hefty mortgage! But just when you think you can pigeon-hole him as a hopelessly quirky escapee of the Dr. Demento Home for the Musically Insane, he hits you with a song like 'Mountain,' a driving blues riff that is a scathing indictment of the damage done in the name of 'progress' and the 'nuisance' of conscience. Or one like 'To Carry On,' an inspirationally uplifting ballad urging us to strive through adversity. This is no 'novelty' act, though he is loaded with personality and quirkiness. James is an amazing guitarist, both in a technical and creative sense, and his voice has so much personality that you might overlook how GOOD it is, pitch perfect over a wide range, with an emotional depth."
* More at www.jameshurleymusic.com (which he expresses in song, in his only self-ptomotional jingle.)

* LOIS BLAISCH is that most rare of artists – one who knows commercial success while still retaining her artistry. She's a singer, guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer best known for writing the multi-platinum #1 Pop & AC hit "Could've Been” which was sung by Tiffany, and was later chosen by Carrie Underwood for her U.S. debut on TV's "American Idol."
* Lois’ songs have been nominated for three Grammy awards in the categories of Pop, Jazz & Children’s Music, and for “The Golden Reel Award” for the writing and singing on the theme to “Street Sharks” (a Disney TV series).
* She had a top 10 hit with jazz artist Earnestine Anderson (of Quincy Jones’ Quest records) and she’s a member of BMI’s “Million Airs” Club.
* Lois’ vocals and/or songs are featured on "Friends," "Splash," "Touched by an Angel," "Thick of the Night," "Top of The Pops," "Sailor Moon," Neil Young’s “Living with War," and “Oasis 4.”
* Her songs also appear on gold and platinum albums "Asia" and "Africa."
* She has produced and released two of her own CD’s, “Through Thick & Thin” and ”Valentine,” both released worldwide, and she is currently finishing her latest CD, "Rollercoaster."
* Neat factoids: Lois’ first professional gig was a tour of the Orient with “Bob Hope’s USO Shows” at age 18. After returning home, she performed at local nightclubs, colleges and amusement parks for a living while studying music at UCLA. Lois was invited to write music and sing for Walt Disney children's records, which resulted in song placements on three platinum Disney albums: "Mousersize", "Rainbow Bright," & Winnie the Pooh,“Take My Hand“. Lois started her studio singing career on the themes to TV shows "Stingray" and "Hunter' for Mike Post Productions and she sang lead on the feature film "Splash." Lois also sang many demos for hit songwriters Diane Warren and Steve Diamond, and on a variety of TV shows and radio commercials (Levi’s, Coke, Kaiser-Permanente, Oregon Lotto, Pepsi, Budweiser, Round Table Pizza, Van Camps, Sunny D. and Safeway).

* There are things that we ought to be afraid of. Things that, rightfully, send cold sweat nightmares. For kids it can be anything from the darkness under a bed, or strangers, or crossing a busy street. For adults it might change face a bit and become things like sickness, job security, or heartbreak. And sometimes, when you point the flashlight right at the thing you’re terrified of, you declaw it. You take its mask off and it returns to being an empty, boring closet with nothing inside to harmyou. Or maybe the light shows an unexpected beauty in the place of what you thought was horrific. Other times, though, you aim the beam straight into the pitch black and the thing that you prayed wasn’t real, the one with all the teeth, is right there smiling at you. Texas born duo Penny and Sparrow know these things, and in their 2017 release Wendigo they turn the lights off on purpose and hunt for what’s really there in the dark. With a musical maturity that has been honed over half a decade and hundreds of live shows, Kyle Jahnke and Andy Baxter are presenting their most ambitious album yet. Rejoined by Chris Jacobie (producer and engineer of Creature, Tenboom, Struggle Pretty & Christmas Songs) Penny & Sparrow delve into numerous new and diverse sound landscapes throughout Wendigo, without sacrificing the sharp honesty that’s accompanied their career thus far.

Sun, Oct 22:
2 pm JAN SEIDES (pronounced Sigh-deez) at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA; Reservations, 10 am-10 pm, 7 days, by phone only: 626-798-6236.
* Singer/Songwriter Jan Seides (www.janseides.com) writes and performs original, lyrics-driven, award-winning songs that combine uptown sophistication with down-home truth. They have been presented with style and verve in prestigious venues in the U.S. and Europe.
* Jan says…” I first felt the pull of music when I was three. My mother would always turn on the radio while we ate dinner, and one day I surprised her by singing to her by heart one of the songs we had heard. She was pretty excited about that, so I immediately learned another. That was followed closely by piano lessons, the discovery that I had "perfect pitch" (I know what note I'm hearing, the same way people recognize colors.) Because of these experiences and abilities, I've always felt my purpose to be making music, especially when I started writing songs of my own. To me, a perfect life would be to entertain people with my music in intimate settings where I could get to know the members of the audience and they could get to know me in a way that is not possible in an arena. Stardom was never my goal, though I admit, I got addicted to applause early in life. But there is real joy in looking out at an audience and seeing them laugh, or hold one another's hands, or wipe away an escaping tear because of my song. If I could do that until soul and body were parted, I'd be completely content."
* HEAR HER PERFORM at:
* She adds, "I’m sincerely delighted you came to visit, and I have lots of wonderful things to show you. I would also love to hear from you! So…
Pull up a cup of your favorite beverage, relax, listen to some music, look at some pictures, read a newsletter or two (or three, or four) and let me know who you are, where you are, and what’s on your mind. Thanks for stopping by.- Jan."
* Here's a late review of Siren Song from friend and fellow music-lover, Roni Lynn:
“Absolutely love the cd. It’s terrific. Beautiful, meaningful words and story songs. Your voice and arrangements are unique. Just well done! So glad i got to hear it. And know the person who wrote such amazing songs. Very moving and honest lyrics “
* Jan Seides has enjoyed acclaim across the U.S. in Europe and in Israel. Her songs present down-home truths with up-town sophistication, performed with style and spirit. Her music has most often been compared to Nanci Griffith, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos and Suzanne Vega.
* Jan now has 5 CDs to her credit, and a 6th being readied for release. This latest adventure involves stories from the Bible, told from unexpected points of view. Some are joyful, some angry, some somber, and a few are even humorous.

JOHN MORELAND plays the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
* The replay of John Moreland's network television debut is…glorious and affirming and a sucker punch. He is announced by Stephen Colbert, lights dissolve, and the camera slowly focuses on the person midway across the unadorned stage, revealing him beneath muted blue lights. He is a big man. Seated, alone, cradling his acoustic guitar. He looks like nobody who is famous. Then he begins to sing, to caress the song “Break My Heart Sweetly,”
and all that remains is to whisper, “Oh, my god.” In Colbert's studio everybody stood, like they were in church.
* "Big Bad Luv" is the record John Moreland made after everything in his life changed for the better.
* He sings in one of those accents from flyover country that's impossible to locate and implausible to mimic. (Texas, by way of Northern Kentucky, but mostly Tulsa, as it happens.) He sings directly from his heart, with none of the restraint and filters and caution the rest of us would apply for public protection. He sings with resolute courage. He sings. And writes. Writes with simple eloquence about love and faith and isolation; the human condition; what every song and poem and novel is about, at the core: Life.

Probably the best attendance of the year. Therefore, I am bringing them back for another October extravaganza. His music is something fresh and distinctly new, yet is deeply woven in the spiritual fabric of our ancient ancestors. Surrounded by 5 guitars, 3 didgeridoos, an array of percussion instruments and decorated of symbolic ancestral nature, Green's stage appears to be a musical playground not for the faint of heart.
* On the heels of Green's recent EP 'Collide,' comes the latest and most anticipated of his musical offerings. 'Voice of the Wind,' Green's 5th studio album, is a captivating sonic journey exposing the foundational fabric from which his inspiration is born. Traveling the depths of emotion and musical experience, 'Voice of the Wind' brings the listener into the haunting mystical realms of songs like "Rainbow Medicine," to the foot stomping grooves of "Let it Go" and into the celebratory experience of the songs like "Red Road" and the title track "Voice of the Wind." 6 pm MATT WERTZ at the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
* A self-made singer/songwriter, Matt Wertz spent years creating soulful, feel-good pop music on his own terms. Nashville — a city that doubled as his muse and adopted hometown — always played a big role in that creation process. It was the place where Wertz wrote his songs, the place he recorded his albums, the place he'd return after touring the country with songwriters like Jason Mraz, Maroon 5, Parachute and Gavin DeGraw.
* More than a decade into a career filled with commercial success and touring milestones, Matt Wertz remains proud to be an independent singer/songwriter. But don't mistake Gun Shy for the sort of intimate album you'd hear at your local coffee shop. These are not acoustic guitar songs. They're songs built on laptops and driven forward by dance beats. Songs that move you physically and emotionally. Songs that splash Wertz's super-sized hooks across the backdrop of the Los Angeles skyline, creating their own brand of scenery along the way.

9 pm The Bluegrass Situation presents: The Steel Wheels at the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
* Hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, The Steel Wheels are familiar with the traditions of folk music and how a string band is supposed to sound. In fact, they’ve been drawing on those steadfast traditions for more than a decade. Yet, their name also evokes a sense of forward motion, which is clearly reflected in their latest album, Wild As We Came Here. The Steel Wheels recorded their album in rural Maine, where producer Sam Kassirer owns a recording studio inside a renovated farmhouse from the 18th century. All four band members – Trent Wagler (guitar, banjo), Eric Brubaker (fiddle), Brian Dickel (upright bass) and Jay Lapp (mandolin) – hunkered down for a week and a half to create Wild As We Came Here.
* The band’s name is a tip of the hat to steam-powered trains, industrial progress and the buggies of their Mennonite lineage. Their musical style weaves through Americana and bluegrass, folk and old-time music, and the acoustic poetry of the finest singer-songwriters. By incorporating percussion and keyboards into their recording sessions for the first time, Wild As We Came Here adds new textures to their catalog, as themes of discovery and perseverance run throughout the collection.

* “Donna The Buffalo is from central New York state, not Louisiana, but this widely loved quintet has woven that joyful, hip-shaking zydeco pulse into the DNA of its sound, and leaders Jeb Puryear and Tara Nevins have wrapped that core vibe with hopeful, mellow lyrics.” — Music City Roots, Craig Havighurst.
* Donna the Buffalo just passed the marker as their 25th year as a band and have proven to be a consistent purveyor of American music. What’s the recipe? To be sure, it’s infused with more spices than you’ll find at a Cajun cookout by way of a southern-fried, rockin’ country old-time jamboree. “For the dizzying array of styles and genres with which they work, Donna The Buffalo maintain a surprising level of consistency. The New York-based band has played around with folk, zydeco, and many other musical ideas over the course of their 25-year career, but they retain a sharp focus that has helped them create some truly lasting music,” writes Elmore Magazine.

2:30 pm THE LICATA BROTHERS, RASIN STUWART, NEIL ROSENGARDEN & CHAD WATSON, "a cornucopia of talent" at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena, CA; Reservations, 10 am-10 pm, 7 days, by phone only: 626-798-6236.
* Bob Stane says, "It’s hard to believe that our home-grown, youthful THE LICATA BROTHERS have just completed seven years at the Coffee Gallery Backstage. TONY and elder brother JIMMY LICATA continue to rock the house with catchy Americana favorites, soulful harmonies, bold and catchy international tunes and a growing catalog of eclectic original work. Hard at work on their third CD, these capable lads are regular features in Coffee Gallery tribute shows and across the San Gabriel Valley with their extensive work with local non-profit organizations. Come join them for another exciting Saturday matinee performance with some of the finest local musicians whom they now count as good friends and collaborators."
* RASPIN STUWART is back with the Licata Brothers again after their SRO performance back in June. His intensely clever and entrancing songs bring that rare blend of spiritual insight, social commentary and self-deprecating humor that had the audience singing along to his diverse song catalog, including from his most recent CD, “We Do What We Do”. In the intimate, comfortable atmosphere of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, an afternoon “session” with Raspin is just what the doctor ordered in these troubled times.
* NEIL ROSENGARDEN, a youthful prodigy in his own day, brings a lifetime of multi-instrument mastery to every event he supports at the Coffee Gallery Backstage. Whether on keyboards, guitar or trumpet, the Licata Brothers are thrilled to have him backing them up as they pull out the stops on music from just about any era and genre. Neil will also have for sale copies of his recent CD, “Four Songs”, on which he collaborated with the renowned lyricist/poet STEPHEN KALINICH.
* CHAD WATSON, lovingly referred to in these parts as ”God’s Bass Player”, brings a rhythmic, melodic and harmonic richness and clarity to every performance. His charming voice, soothing manner and infectious enthusiasm for good music of any period really lights up the room (and his fellow musicians). If you have not yet seen this master at work, get ready for this “soulful keel” on the ship of musical adventure for a truly memorable afternoon.

10 pm MELISSA POLINAR at the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
* Melissa Polinar first embarked on her journey when the industry was evolving into something new with the digital age. Many of her first steps forward as a singer-songwriter were in large part thanks to YouTube at its beginning. She bubbled to the top of the website’s music category with a collection of original songs, which instantly set her apart from most other curators who are more known for covers of pop music. Self-penned songs like 'Try' and 'Meant to Be' solidified her presence on YouTube not just as a singer, but an authentic songwriter known for her artistic poise and lyrical sincerity.
* It was during the formidable years between her YouTube videos and her extensive songwriting experience at a young age in Nashville when she began to fit into her shoes evolving to the artist that she is today. As the old industry further gave way to the social media era, she was able to reach more of an audience with her work than had arguably ever been available for Asian-American artists before. Polinar put a face and a voice to rising artists worldwide from the early stages of her career onward - thanks to her Internet presence and grassroots approach. Outside of writing, performing, and producing her own art, Polinar has contributed her talents across multiple albums by other artists.

* For Kumu Mahealani, hula is a lifestyle and a way of being. You will see her magic as she dances. It will touch your heart.

* They bring a four-person band of extreme quality and fun.
* JIM KWESKIN is best known from jug band fame, and these days, as a singer-songwriter and bandleader, but he also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band was the original "Americana" band, playing everything from classic blues to hillbilly country, ragtime, jazz, and rock 'n' roll. Kweskin has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and traditional jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist.
* Alabama-born JULI CROCKETT is a bona fide Renaissance woman: singer, songwriter, playwright, theater director, undefeated professional boxer and amateur champion, ordained minister, Doctor of Philosophy, and leader of the alt-country / avant Americana genre-defying band THE EVANGENITALS, as well as THE CROCKETT SISTERS. (They’re the same band – you choose which name you prefer. Some bookings have a problem with the original name.)
* The teaming of Jim Kweskin and Juli Crockett is the happy collision of classic and contemporary Americana music. Together, Kweskin and Crockett performances are celebrations of virtuoso musicianship seasoned with humor andexuberance.
* Joined by super mandolin player Daniel Mark (Dustbowl Revival) and bassist Carl Sealove, Jim and Juli have a great time singing both old jazzy, folkyfavorites mixed in with Juli's original (and occasionally irreverent) compositions. Take a wild ride through history and into the future of folk with Kweskin and Crockett.

7 pm JESSE MALIN at the Hotel Cafe, 1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood, CA 90028; www.hotelcafe.com; 323-461-2040.
* Few in the modern musical landscape have reinvented themselves like Jesse Malin. Revered by iconic figures from Bruce Springsteen and Joe Strummer to Ryan Adams and Jim Jarmusch, Malin's songwriting has shape-shifted through decades and genres and left an indelible mark on hardcore, punk, folk, and everything in between. Produced by songwriter Joseph Arthur, Jesse Malin’s new EP Meet Me at the End of the World aims his singular blend of gritty street poetry and incisive self-reflection squarely at our troubled, modern times. "The songs were written on tour looking out the van window," reflects Malin. "We were driving around America just watching the frightening and embarrassing ascension of the current administration amidst a really dark and manipulative international media blitz." The music was recorded fast and raw with Malin's live band: drummer Randy Schrager, bassist Catherine Popper, and longtime sideman/producer/co-writer Derek Cruz. The collaboration with Arthur was initially intended to be a one-time affair for Malin's Positive Panther charity, which raises funds for his former European merch-seller Nathalie Baverstock in her fight against cancer, but the two songwriters discovered a natural kinship in the studio. “It's not unusual for Jesse to be writing great songs, but it feels like there's a new energy to it right now," adds Joseph.

♪ "INTERPLAY," 4th ANNUAL "FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND IDEAS" WITH PACIFIC SYMPHONY COMING OCT. 22
It's an afternoon of California-inspired chamber music and art at the Hilbert Museum when partners Pacific Symphony and Chapman University present a concert for “Interplay.”
Orange County, Calif. — Oct. 12, 2017 — Pacific Symphony and Chapman University are partnering for a fourth year to present "INTERPLAY, a festival of arts and ideas." The festival includes many events that are free and open to the public, and offers audiences a fascinating, in-depth look at a particular facet of our culture that will entertain, enlighten, illuminate and inspire.
Great music by outstanding musicians in an wonderful venue surrounded by fine art by many of California’s most noted artists — what more could you ask for? Maybe wine and cheese? It’s got that, too.
The public is invited to enjoy this (free!) chamber music performance by Pacific Symphony in a concert that's just part of the INTERPLAY festival. This event features a string quartet from the Symphony and a cello ensemble from Chapman. Laszlo Mezo, member of the Symphony and lecturer at Chapman, has crafted an imaginative program inspired by the collection at the university’s Hilbert Museum of California Art, and an upcoming special exhibition.
The concert has a dimension of context and history seldom possible. It features a number of composers — from George Antheil to Lou Harrison, Terry Riley and more — who were writing music in California around the time the art works in the exhibit were created.
“The Symphony asked me if I would be interested in leading a concert at the Hilbert Museum, and the answer was of course, yes,” says Mezo. “I regularly perform chamber music nationally and internationally, and I couldn’t be happier to plan this event’s repertoire.
“We have two groups performing: the ChapCelli cello ensemble with University musicians and the string quartet with Pacific Symphony members,” he continues. “We’ll perform early Baroque to contemporary works and show connections between the pieces, locations and visual art. Most of the selections were inspired by the exhibition at the Hilbert Museum.”
The late-afternoon performance also features a poetry reading of works written by Chapman graduate students and inspired by the exhibit’s art. Then, a California wine and cheese reception follows the performance.
* The program takes place Sunday, Oct. 22, at 4 pm, in the Hilbert Museum, 167 N Atchison St, Orange, CA.
* Doors open at 3:30 pm, with free parking in front, and additional public parking on the top floor of the University structure at 230 N Cypress.
* Seating is limited and is first-come, first-served, with limited standing room at the back of the venue.

♪ "LET’S PLAY!" COMMUNITY MUSICIANS SAY “YES!” TO INVITATION BY PACIFIC SYMPHONY
Community musicians get to rehearse and perform chamber music with orchestra musicians on Samueli Theater’s concert stage
Orange County, CA — Oct. 11, 2017 — Pacific Symphony’s perennially popular program, “OC Can You Play With Us?,” has been inviting amateur musicians from across Orange County to perform onstage with orchestra members for almost seven years now. What began as a one-time endeavor in 2011 to expose the community’s musicians to professional music education and performance has continued to grow and morph with each passing year. In 2014, the Symphony expanded the program to include a chamber music edition that would allow for a more intimate learning and playing experience. Just as popular as the original program, which engaged avocational musicians in a side-by-side performance with the full orchestra, the chamber edition provides the unique opportunity of playing a variety of selected repertoire in one of five chamber ensembles led by Symphony conductors and musicians.
“This program highlights the various sections of the orchestra in chamber ensembles, where the philosophy is ‘the more the merrier!’ ” says Kelli Frager, the Symphony’s community arts engagement manager. “This allows us to connect with avocational musicians who enjoy getting together in a non-competitive environment to embrace the fun of making music with others who do the same. We make a place for everyone, and they get the chance to play under the guidance of a Symphony musician or conductor, as well as continue the network of community musicians in Orange County and beyond.”
The culminating event for “OC Can You Play With Us?,” which is similar to an open rehearsal, takes place on Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m., in the Samueli Theater (located at the rear of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall).
* Friends and interested observers are invited to attend the workshop-style final event for free (general admission), but free tickets are required and can be reserved through the Symphony’s box office at 714-755-5799, or online at PacificSymphony.org/tickets/concert/OCCYP_CE_2017-18 or if still available, at the door.

♪ THE JERRY DOUGLAS BAND HEADLINES THE TROUBADOUR, NOV. 13
New Album 'What If' Out Now on Rounder Records
THE JERRY DOUGLAS BAND, led by 14-time Grammy Award-winning and three-time Country Music Association Musician of the Year JERRY DOUGLAS, are set to perform a headlining show at The Troubadour on Monday, November 13, during a stop on their current national U.S. tour in support of the recently released album, "What If" on Rounder Records.
The band will bring their unique sound that decisively merges jazz inclinations with the bluegrass, country, blues, swing, rock, and soul to the history-drenched venue.
"What If" is the debut studio album from THE JERRY DOUGLAS BAND, released August 11 to a wave of critical praise (excerpts from some of the standout reviews are below).
On the album, there's "Hey Joe" in a genre-bending arrangement; the song's video premiered on Rolling Stone. The song — in addition to a funky, soul-drenched arrangement of "2:19," the Tom Waits' gem — was performed recently alongside bassist Daniel Kimbro during a live session with Paste Magazine. Other "What If" standouts, include the album's title track and "Battle Stick," both performed on the streets of New York City for "City Winery Cellar Sessions."
Though Douglas has previously recorded several of the songs on the new album, he turns them inside out here in bold new arrangements filled with unexpected elements. For example, in 1992 he covered "Hey Joe," the Billy Roberts folk tune that became one of Jimi Hendrix's most beloved blues-rockers. Jerry did it then as an uptempo bluegrass song. Here, it's recontextualized again with drums and fiddle — and horns instead of mandolin.
He also radically reconfigures the album opener "Cavebop," originally recorded in 2002. This time, it contains the horns he always wanted it to have.
"The first time I recorded it, we just played it as fast as we possibly could," says Douglas, continuing, "This time, we made it a bit more sophisticated, with more of an arrangement. A lot of times, when you record songs, you don't really know 'em yet. I got another shot at this one."
As soon as he graduated from high school, Jerry Douglas headed to Washington, D.C. to join CHARLIE WALLER, RICKY SKAGGS, and DOYLE LAWSON in the COUNTRY GENTLEMEN.
He's since performed in so many incarnations; at one point, he counted membership in eight bands, simultaneously. His recent history includes his band the EARLS OF LEICESTER — his version of the Flatt and Scruggs band — with SHAWN CAMP, CHARLIE CUSHMAN, JEFF WHITE, JOHNNY WARREN, and BARRY BALES; their self-titled 2014 debut earned Douglas his 14th Grammy.
He'd already picked up eight Grammys with ALISON KRAUSS & UNION STATION, with whom he's closing-out his second decade, and shared the "Album of the Year" win for "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," the film soundtrack that helped replant traditional roots music in the modern American psyche.
That brings us to the here and now. Here's some of the praise collected by "WHAT IF:"
"Even after 14 Grammys, Jerry Douglas is still exploring unlikely musical pairings, as evidenced by the soul-and bluegrass-melding rendition of 'Hey Joe...' Jerry Douglas Band's version opens with a furious Dobro lick before driving to the chorus with thick ascending horn lines that suggest Sixties Motown. While more traditional Country instrumentation of fiddle and trebly electric guitar both take instrumental flights of their own, saxophonist Jamel Mitchell, nephew of Al Green producer Willie Mitchell, blows a bluesy solo that offers a fresh sonic counterpoint." —RollingStone.com, August 4, 2017.
"... What If is a new beginning...it's a freewheeling, musically sprawling set, perhaps more jazz and rock oriented than most would expect. Douglas writes most of the material yet works up innovative, substantially rearranged versions of 'Hey Joe,' best known by Hendrix's cover but here given a caffeinated backwoods workup, and Tom Waits' '2:19.' The album's centerpiece is its title track, a pensive progressive jazz/bluegrass fusion instrumental that allows the members to stretch out and shows both their creativity and talent. Ditto for the Douglas-Bela Fleck co-write 'Freemantle,' best described as bluegrass/jazz fusion, where Douglas' Dobro interweaves with the horns and guitar in electrifying fashion. There's enough fret-shredding in the opening five minute 'Cave Bop' (a re-recording of a Douglas original, first heard in 2002) with its high energy soloing and near free-jazz approach, and the closing 'Hot Country 84.5' that's somewhat more laid back but just as musically challenging, to satisfy those looking for Douglas' sizzling picking. But it's the interaction of the instruments throughout, in particular the horns, that makes this a true band production...whether you come for hot licks, compositional diversity or to experience a talented band firing on all cylinders with like-minded players delving into a variety of styles they love, the superb What If has you covered. Hopefully this is the start of a long term ensemble, willing to test individual musical parameters and expand their roots based standards into new, dynamic and fresh frontiers." (4 out of 5 stars) — Hal Horowitz, American Songwriter, August 16, 2017.
"The new project merges jazz with bluegrass, country, blues, swing, rock, and soul on eleven tracks filled with bold arrangements and unexpected elements. One such song is Douglas' rendering of Tom Waits' '2:19.' A funky revelation, the song drips with soul courtesy of some dynamic horn-work and Douglas' bluesy vocals." — Tara Joan, No Depression, July 20, 2017.
"Ultimately, What If signals that after so many years and so many recordings, Douglas is still pushing the envelope and challenging himself to do new things with his music... The song ['2:19'] is an interesting choice...essentially it is a blues tune and with Jerry Douglas and his talented band at the helm, the song is loaded with twang, horns, and some damn fine solo work. It stands out for the heavy dose of funk and soul the band whips up." — GlideMagazine.com, July 24, 2017.
"...Dobro master Jerry Douglas is pulling the strings, taking Billy Roberts' classic composition ['Hey Joe'] to new and exciting places...Douglas & Co. truly soup up the tune, adding plenty of bluegrass fire and thunder along the way." — Damian Fanelli, GuitarWorld.com, August 8, 2017.
"While you may not associate the dobro or the lap steel with jazz, Jerry Douglas shows that it can swing harder than 75% of so called jazzers. He's teamed with Daniel Kimbro/b, Doug Belote/dr, Christian Sedelmyer/vi, Mike Seal/g, Jamel Mitchell/sax and Vance Thompson/tp on a hard hitting bopper that has Douglas, Mitchell and Thompson sounding like its 52nd St in New York on the frenetic 'CaveBop' and the blues-burning 'Unfolding.' Douglas gets Hendrixy in groove and attitude with Mitchell's frantic tenor sax on a riveting read of 'Hey Joe' and the band gets swampy on '2:19.' As far as emotions go, Douglas makes the strings cry like Roy Orbison on a bel canto 'The Last Wild Moor' while getting down home on 'Hot Country 84.5' Fun on the frets!" — George Harris, JazzWeekly.com, October 9, 2017.
"Douglas has never been afraid of pushing labels aside in his search for arresting sounds and musical adventure. Like banjo-bashing Bella Fleck and mando-wizard Dave Grisman, he can and does turn his hand to almost anything that catches his fancy. With What If, he has again pushed the boat way out, far beyond the comfort zone of many, to deliver an album that has horns where banjo or mando might be expected, and at times his own gravel-strewn voice to produce an unexpectedly confident stab at the blues; one track, Tom Waits' '2.19,' is clearly a straightforward, powerfully produced traditional, twelve-bar blues number where his picking and singing both combine to remarkable effect, and his take on the old rock-blues standard 'Hey Joe' (his second recording of the track) is an up-tempo, driving tour de force. Add a few Celtic traditional sounding instrumental tracks to the mix and you have a release that is truly surprising, inspired, unexpected but beautifully done." — Iain Patience, ElmoreMagazine.com, August 8, 2017.

♪ JESSE CLEGG, SOUTH AFRICAN SINGER-SONGWRITER, CONCLUDES U.S. TOUR WITH SAN DIEGO, L.A. SHOWS, Oct 30 & Nov 7
Plays Balboa theatre in San Diego Oct 30
Concludes tour at The Hotel Café in Hollywood on Tue, Nov 7th
We have reported multiple times on RODRIGUEZ, aka SIXTO RODRIGUEZ, the biggest music star ever in South Africa. He is an American singer-songwriter who got nowhere in the US, and had no idea he was a household name whose music provided the anthems that brought-down apartheid in South Africa. In fact, his fans there believed he was dead, and when the discovery came that he wasn't, it created a nationwide phenomenon that has taken him there for several massive concert tours.
But, since the Guide doesn't report on "world music," we haven't had an occasion to talk about anyone else who is hot in that nation's music scene. Until now.
We're going to tell you about JESSE CLEGG. He's a South African star with a pedigree and he continues to expand his American fanbase. At press time, singer-songwriter Jesse Clegg is headed back for his third tour of North America. It will end with a show in Los Angeles at The Hotel Café on Tuesday, November 7th. Tickets for this 9 pm show are $10, at www.hotelcafe.com
We mentioned his pedigree. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Jesse is the offspring of iconic Afro-pop musician JOHNNY CLEGG, with whom Jesse spent the first six years of his life — on the road, with Johnny on-tour. This readied Jesse for the life of a career musician, but he found his own musical path in the sounds of modern rock from the U.S. and the UK. Jesse will be supporting his father Johnny Clegg on the "Final Journey" tour that kicks off in Boston, MA on October 14th and concludes in Boulder, CO on November 2nd, before he heads to the West Coast on his own for his exclusive headliner gigs.
A star in his home country and one of South Africa’s premier acts, the young artist is distinguished as one of only a few to achieve Platinum success there. On this, his third American tour, he will perform songs from his first two albums "When I Wake Up" and "Life On Mars," as well as the recent international hits “Use Me”, “Breathing," and other new material from his current album "Things Unseen," which shows Jesse augmenting his sound by incorporating electronic and pop elements into the production.
In 2016 Jesse toured North America for a second time, and earlier this year he made his debut at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. The single “Breathing” was also released in 2017, reaching #1 in South Africa and becoming one of the most-played songs there.
Jesse has achieved so much in these early years of his career, with five Top Ten singles, extensive touring throughout South Africa playing the biggest festivals in the country, and performing abroad many times in both Europe and North America. As an official ambassador for the "Nelson Mandela 46664 Foundation," Jesse was invited to play at Radio City Music Hall in New York City for their annual "Mandela Day Concert" alongside Stevie Wonder, Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys, and many others. He has also achieved three "South African Music Award" nominations.

The tour's major market stops included New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia, and ended with a two-night run in Nashville, Tenn. breaking Bridgestone Arena's attendance record the first night and topped Church's own just-set record on its second night.

Most recently he earned the 2017 ACM "Merle Haggard Spirit Award," 2016 CMA "Album of the Year Award" for "Mr. Misunderstood," and the 2016 ACM "Music Video of the Year Award" for the album's first title-track single. At the upcoming awards show in November, Church is nominated for three CMA Awards including his second nod for "Entertainer of the Year."
The North Carolina native's previous album, "The Outsiders," debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and Top Country Albums Chart. That marked the highest debut position and sales of any release in the format that year, making Church 2014's top-selling country music artist. The album garnered Grammy, CMA, and ACM "Album of the Year" nominations and featured his No. 1 hits "Give Me Back My Hometown" and "Talladega," as well as multiple nominee "Like A Wrecking Ball." "The Outsiders" was the follow-up to Church's 3x Platinum-certified "CHIEF," named the 2012 "Album of the Year" by both CMA and ACM, and GRAMMY-nominated for "Best Country Album." The LP featured five Top 20 singles: "Homeboy" (certified Platinum for sales in excess of one million); the Top 10 "Like Jesus Does" and the Top 5 "Creepin'" (both certified Platinum); and two No. 1 hits, "Drink in My Hand" (certified Platinum) and "Springsteen" (certified Double Platinum for sales in excess of 2 million singles). Church's sophomore album, "Carolina," (2009) is RIAA Platinum certified and his 2006 debut album, "Sinners Like Me" is RIAA Gold certified.

♪ PRESERVATION PLEA: SIGN THE ADSLA PETITION TO SAVE "THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER" BUILDING
The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles (ADSLA) is seeking Landmark Status for The Hollywood Reporter Building through the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission
Status is essential to save anything from the wrecking ball in L.A.
The ADSLA Committee for Preservation Advocacy is engaged in a multi-phase process of working toward gaining Historic Cultural Monument status for the Hollywood Reporter Building on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. The building housed the first Los Angeles-based daily entertainment industry trade paper.
The nomination passed its first two steps towards Historic Cultural Monument (HCM) designation. At its meeting on August 17, 2017 meeting, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission voted in favor of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles' nomination. Next, on Tuesday, October 17 at 2:30PM, the Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee has to vote in favor and then the nomination goes to the full city council.
Please lend your support. It is important that the city council knows how many people care about preserving this building.
If you would like to help by attending a hearing, email ADSLA at: artdeco@adsla.org
The property (and the ADSLA nomination) actually consists of three buildings built between 1924 and 1947. The front building facing Sunset is a 1936 redesign by architect Douglas Hannold for its brief life as the upscale "Sunset House" menswear store. This design is a very distinctive (and unusual) Hollywood Regency / moderne style. While in need of restoration, it is mostly intact. The regal interiors of the original Sunset House are extant, including wooden doors, columns, a fireplace and other ornamentation. The Hollywood Reporter eventually used the entire building for offices and actually printed the paper daily, onsite, until the late 1980s.
For fans of Turner Classic Movies, it may interest you to know that Robert Osborne worked for The Hollywood Reporter for many years, penning the "Rambling Reporter" column.
The Sunset House may have been designed to rival downtown L.A.'s Oviatt where the Cicada Club is today.
The Hollywood Reporter, located at 6715 Sunset Boulevard, is just west of Crossroads of the World, which is already an Historic Cultural Monument.
The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and awareness of Art Deco as a major influence on the 20th century and beyond.
Since 1983, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles has welcomed people with an interest in the many facets of Art Deco. About Kenny Rogers:
Kenny Rogers began recording in the late 1950s, notching a local hit in the Houston, TX market with "That Crazy Feeling" that resulted in a national TV appearance on "American Bandstand." After stints with the jazz group THE BOBBY DOYLE THREE and folk favorite THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS, Rogers formed THE FIRST EDITION in 1967. As the lead singer of the group, Rogers sang on the band's biggest hits, such as "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" and "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town." The group, who hosted their own syndicated television series, "Rollin'", stayed together through 1975.
In 1976, Rogers signed a deal in Nashville with United Artists. With the help of producer LARRY BUTLER, Rogers released "Lucille" in early 1977, his first No. 1 hit. The singer would tally many classics through the decade, including "Love Or Something Like It," "Sweet Music Man," "The Gambler," and "Every Time Two Fools Collide," which he recorded with the late DOTTIE WEST. Rogers was named "Male Vocalist of the Year" by both the CMA and the ACM, being also recognized as "Entertainer of the Year" by the latter in 1979.
In 1980, Rogers made musical history with his crossover success of "Lady." The LIONEL RICHIE composition netted the singer a hit in the Country, Pop, AC, and R&B fields. The album from which the song was pulled, "Kenny Rogers' Greatest Hits," was certified Diamond for sales of over ten million units. In the 1980s, he stayed on top of the charts with hits like "I Don't Need You," "We've Got Tonight," and "Morning Desire," and sang on the Grammy® winning "USA For Africa" charity single, "We Are The World," joined by an unprecedented number of music legends. He also established a successful career as an actor – with roles in "The Gambler" movie series – and as a photographer, with several published books of photos to his credit, including "This Is My Country."
Rogers has sold over 120 million albums worldwide during his career, making him one of the best-selling male artists of all-time according to the RIAA, with twenty Platinum albums and eleven Gold. He has won awards from every organization imaginable, including multiple GRAMMY® Awards, as well as CMA, ACM, CMT, TNN, Music City News, and American Music Awards. In 2012, Rogers released his successful memoir, "Luck or Something Like It" and became a New York Times Best-Selling Author. In the fall of 2013, Rogers was bestowed with his biggest honor, being inducted as a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. He continues to endear himself to audiences through his timeless music, and appearances on television – including a well-received Geico commercial in 2015.
In the fall of 2015, Kenny Rogers made headlines with the announcement that he would soon embark on a farewell tour – after one of the most successful and iconic careers in the history of show business. The spring of 2016 saw the singer begin that process with his "The Gambler's Last Deal" Final World Tour, saying goodbye to his loyal legion of fans one city and one night at a time in what has been a critically-acclaimed night of music and memories.

"AT THE LOUISIANA HAYRIDE TONIGHT" 20-CD BOX SET ON BEAR FAMILY RECORDS, DUE OCT. 20
Features rare performances from HANK WILLIAMS, ELVIS PRESLEY, JOHNNY CASH, & more
SHREVEPORT, La. — For more than two decades, the "Louisiana Hayride" radio show was a Saturday night staple for music lovers. Broadcast by Shreveport, Louisiana’s KWKH-AM from 1948-1960, "Hayride" stood as the chief rival to the now better-known "Grand Ole Opry." While the Opry favored established Nashville stars, Hayride offered headliners and newcomers alike an opportunity to perform. It was this policy that led Hayride to say “yes” to a young singer from Tupelo, Mississippi after the Opry said “no.” That singer, ELVIS PRESLEY, debuted on the show in October 1954 and later made his first TV appearance on the television version in March 1955.
Time was when the Louisiana Hayride show at the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, Louisiana was the place for country music fans to be on a Saturday night. Just sixty cents for adults (thirty for kids) bought the finest night’s entertainment anytime, anywhere.
Featuring more than 25 hours of music, this unprecedented collection comes packed in an LP-sized package complete with a 224-page hardcover book. There are rare performances from stars of a golden age, including ELVIS PRESLEY, JOHNNY CASH, JUNE CARTER, KITTY WELLS, GEORGE JONES, and WEBB PIERCE, as well as a previously unknown HANK WILLIAMS recording.
Rolling Stone Country premiered the unheard Hank Williams track from the set.
You can hear it at: http://rol.st/2gf77XJ
Presley’s 15 songs here (which include “That’s All Right,” “Baby Let’s Play House,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” and “Don’t Be Cruel”) are just a fraction of the more than 500 tunes stocking At the Louisiana Hayride Tonight. Bear Family Records’ 20-CD box set holds a treasury of long-buried live Hayride performances — many of which have never been heard since the day they were broadcast — with perhaps the rarest of these rarities being the previously unknown recording of “I’m a Long Gone Daddy” by HANK WILLIAMS.
The compilation has been constructed in chronological sequence. Throughout the 20 discs songs are interspersed with the Louisiana Hayride theme tune (“…we’re gonna have a wonderful time…”), and with show announcements, intros, ads, comedy routines, and even mistakes, giving listeners a real sense of what it was like to hear the show on the radio, or to have plunked down your 60¢ (or 30¢ for children) for a ticket to watch it live in Shreveport’s Municipal Auditorium. One of these stage announcements, in fact, is the old-time emcee Horace Logan making the now-famous proclamation that “Elvis has left the building.”
Eighteen of the set’s CDs cover the classic weekly Louisiana Hayride broadcasts that took place from April 3, 1948 until August 27, 1960. The other two CDs collect material from some post-1960 shows, along with commercial recordings made in the KWKH radio studios, promotional discs, and transcribed shows from KWKH’s early days. Among the studio-recorded commercial tracks are hits by SLIM WHITMAN, THE BROWNS, MITCHELL TOROK, JIM REEVES, MAC WISEMAN, and CAROLYN BRADSHAW. Additionally, there are 11 “as live” studio-recorded transcriptions that feature selections from KITTY WELLS, JOHNNIE AND JACK, HANK WILLIAMS, and CURLEY WILLIAMS.
Louisiana Hayride was known as “The Cradle of Stars,” and At the Louisiana Hayride Tonight’s lengthy track-list provides plenty of reasons for that. The CDs’ 167 acts reveal a who’s-who of country music royalty (GEORGE JONES, JOHNNY CASH, KITTY WELLS, JUNE CARTER, ROY ACUFF, WEBB PIERCE, FARON YOUNG, ERNEST TUBB, ROGER MILLER, and JIM REEVES) along with regional heroes such as Cajun stars DOUG & RUSTY KERSHAW, and California country stalwarts ROSE MADDOX and WYNN STEWART. The set serves as a reminder too that Hayride was about more than just country music. Presley obviously brought rock ’n’ roll to the show, but there was also rockabilly from WARREN SMITH, WERLY FAIRBURN, and BOB LUMAN, bluegrass from THE LOUVIN BROTHERS and DOBBER JOHNSON, and yodeling from SLIM WHITMAN.
"At the Louisiana Hayride Tonight" also spotlights the impressive group of regulars that included JIMMY MARTIN, MERLE KILGORE, CHARLIE WALKER, RED SOVINE, and JOHNNY HORTON, and emerging local singers MARGARET LEWIS, JERRY KENNEDY, and LINDA BRANNON. The house band similarly was home to many highly-regarded sidemen, like Hall of Fame pianist FLOYD CRAMER, slide guitar masters JIMMY DAY and SHOT JACKSON, guitar legend JAMES BURTON, and future Presley drummer DJ FONTANA.
Besides presenting a wealth of little-heard recordings with stars singing their hits, the set also shows them playing cover tunes (PRESLEY does “Maybellene” and “Long Tall Sally”), performing in a character (FERLIN HUSKY shows up in his comical persona "SIMON CRUM"), and doing commercials (JOHNNY CASH plugs Southern Maid Donuts as the “best in the world”). This extraordinary release also provides the chance to enjoy the other JOHNNY MATHIS — “Country” Johnny Mathis — as well as to discover such lesser-known acts, such as MARLENE ALLEN, DOUG BRAGG, DEAN EVANS, FAY DARLING, and JOE JANKA.
"At the Louisiana Hayride Tonight" is the latest in the Bear Family Records’ highly acclaimed series of releases exploring roots music. This collection, which comes in an LP-sized package complete with a 224-page hardcover book, not only takes a comprehensive look at Louisiana Hayride but also offers an exhilarating portrait of the American music scene during the late ’40s into the early ’60s.
So, what does it include, with its advertised "fabulously restored sound"-? Let's have a look.
• 529 ‘live’ tracks including previously unknown recordings by HANK WILLIAMS.
• 11 ‘as live’ studio-recorded transcriptions, including KITTY WELLS, JOHNNIE AND JACK, HANK WILLIAMS, and CURLEY WILLIAMS.
• 19 studio-recorded commercial discs, including hits by SLIM WHITMAN, THE BROWNS, MITCHELL TOROK, JIM REEVES, MAC WISEMAN, and CAROLYN BRADSHAW.

• Hayride regulars including JAMES O’GWYNN, CURLEY WILLIAMS, RED SOVINE, BETTY AMOS, HARMIE SMITH, BUDDY ATTAWAY, MARGIE SINGLETON, TONY DOUGLAS, JACK FORD, WERLY FAIRBURN, JEANETTE HICKS, GOLDIE HILL, TIBBY EDWARDS, HOOT AND CURLEY, MARTHA LYNN, CLAUDE KING, DAVID HOUSTON, JERRY JERICHO, BOB LUMAN, JIMMY AND JOHNNY, MERLE KILGORE, JIMMY MARTIN, JOHNNY MATHIS, JIMMY LEE, CHARLIE WALKER, BILLY WALKER, and DEE MULLIN.
• All backed by the ultra-talented Hayride staff bands, including FELTON PRUETT, JIMMY DAY, FLOYD CRAMER, SONNY TRAMMELL, JAMES BURTON, D. J. FONTANA, SHOT JACKSON, SONNY HARVILLE, DOBBER JOHNSON, BUFFALO YOUNT, DON DAVIS, and TILLMAN FRANKS.
The track listing for the entire 20-CD set is available at: https://www.bear-family.com/various-artists-at-the-louisiana-hayride-tonight-20-cd.html
The 20-CD set list price is $230.04. And for what's been unearthed from a musical Tutankhamun's vault, or the price of a ticket to Stagecoach 2018, the price of this set shouldn't scare true fans.
We 'spect this'll be marked as not just a landmark release, but a treasure trove of historic finds made all the more remarkable because it's all available in one, overwhelming package.

♪ Big Deal Music Celebrates Five Years of Expansive Growth And Success
Service-Oriented Publishing Company Rebrands As "Big Deal Music Group"
In the face of endless corporocratic overconsolidations into a hegemony of Big Media (including all of America's mainstream news media sources) now under the control of only SIX giant corporate entities, it's cause for celebration when a little upstart attains success.
That's why we're happy to report on Big Deal Music. Ray LaMontagne and St. Vincent are both signed with them.
And what artist isn't longing for a business relationship that says it "provides a meaningful alternative for those creative individuals who prefer an active one-on-one relationship with an experienced publishing partner."
Celebrating its fifth anniversary as one of the most dynamic, fastest growing companies in the industry, Big Deal Music just announced its evolution into Big Deal Music Group. That may sound like business legaleses, but the new umbrella will house the existing companies "Big Deal Music Publishing," "Words & Music Administration" and "Big Deal Media," a recently developed content division, as well as other related ventures yet to come.
With a roster ranging from iconic, headline rock acts like My Morning Jacket and Sleater-Kinney to jazz innovator Kamasi Washington and Grammy-winning songwriter Dan Wilson, Big Deal’s five year run of remarkable growth and success include a Grammy Award for St. Vincent, multiple #1 singles across several formats, and the launch of a groundbreaking company initiative that creates a new business structure for some of today’s top songwriters.
“The past five years have felt like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” said Big Deal Music Group President and co-founder, Kenny MacPherson. “We’ve grown from a small independent publishing company with a handful of clients and a three person staff, to a top 10, self-administered publishing group with global reach. We felt it was time to organize our teams to better serve the needs of our songwriters and artists in this continually evolving music business climate.”
That evolution has resulted in the company’s recent alliances with peermusic, Mushroom Group, Because Music, Native Tongue and The David Gresham Entertainment Group as global sub-publishers for the future. Additionally, the company launched Big Deal Media, for producing master recordings as well as digital content such as the acclaimed songwriting podcast AND THE WRITER IS… a venture with hit songwriters Ross Golan, Joe London and Mega House Music.
Big Deal Music Publishing was founded in September 2012, by former Chrysalis Music colleagues Kenny MacPherson, Jamie Cerreta, Dave Ayers, along with Pete Robinson, and veteran artist manager Michael McDonald. Casey Robison signed on shortly thereafter to head the pop division.
2015 proved to be a pivotal year for Big Deal Music, continuing to grow the roster and staff, and launching Global Music Initiatives, targeting opportunities for their talent by leveraging data and emerging technologies in the digital space. As 2015 drew to a close, Big Deal acquired Nashville-based administration company, Words & Music, transforming the company, according to MacPherson, into “a 21st Century music company — adaptable, flexible, with a real guerrilla attitude.” Early this year, the company heralded its expanding global objectives by opening an office in London headed by former BMG Co-Head of A&R/VP Creative, Kate Sweetsur.
Their self-description is worth sharing: "Big Deal Music Group is a full service publishing company giving new meaning to the term artist-driven. With offices in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville and London, Big Deal is a human-scaled, deeply committed, truly independent publishing company whose staff is dedicated to maximizing opportunities for the artists and writers on its roster with the aim of helping them achieve productive careers in a nurturing environment. Big Deal Music Group provides a meaningful alternative for those creative individuals who prefer an active one-on-one relationship with an experienced publishing partner; and represents some of the industry’s premier artists, bands, and songwriters such as St. Vincent, Ray LaMontagne, My Morning Jacket, Dan Wilson, John Ryan & Brad Tursi."
5-Year Highlights Include:
• Recently occupied two of the three top positions on Top 40 radio charts with Niall Horan’s #1 “Slow Hands” (co-written by John Ryan & Julian Bunetta) and Shawn Mendes’ “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” (co-penned and produced by Teddy Geiger).
• #1 Billboard Top 200 Album and #1 Country Album - Thomas Rhett “Life Changes” (co-written by Joe London, Julian Bunetta and John Ryan)
• #1 Billboard Country Album “Happy Endings” by Old Dominion (Brad Tursi)
• Awards such as ACM Single Record of the Year, CMA Single of the Year and BMI Country Song Of The Year, ("Die a Happy Man," Thomas Rhett), Triple J Album of the Year (Utopia Defeated, D.D Dumbo), ASCAP Pop Music Award (Travis Scott, "Antidote"), Independent Icon Award (Nick Lowe), BMI Song of the Year ("Stitches," Shawn Mendes), American Music Prize (Kamasi Washington) Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album (St. Vincent), Americana Award for Best New Artist (Shakey Graves), AMP Award (Sylvan Esso), NSAI Award (Brad Tursi)

• DOLLY PARTON AND KENNY ROGERS' riveting performance of “Islands In The Stream,” which opened up the 1983 telecast – the same year that the song topped the Country and Pop charts throughout the world.
• ALAN JACKSON’s 2001 world premiere performance of “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” which captivated America following the tragic 9/11 attacks.
• CMA "Entertainer of the Year" winners BROOKS AND DUNN (1996) and REBA McENTIRE (1986) performing a passionate version of “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” in 2008.
• ALAN JACKSON AND GEORGE STRAIT’s tender tribute to GEORGE JONES following his passing in 2013 with a soaring version of "He Stopped Loving Her Today," a CMA "Single" and "Song of the Year" winner from 1980.
And, speaking of collaborations, there are plenty in the collection, like once-in-a-lifetime pairings of artists LORETTA LYNN, DOLLY PARTON AND TAMMY WYNETTE, from 1993 performing "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," and an incredible performance from MIRANDA LAMBERT, LORETTA LYNN, and SHERYL CROW of Lynn's signature "Coal Miners' Daughter" from 2010.
"CMA Awards Live: Greatest Moments 1968-2015" also features many performances from some of music’s biggest stars from outside of the format, including JIMMY BUFFETT, RITA COOLIDGE, and LIONEL RICHIE. Also included with the collection is a 44-page collectible booklet featuring Award winners and the history of the CMA Awards shows.

♪ WARNER GRAND MAKES LA WEEKLY'S "BEST OF" LIST
"Best Broadway-Style Movie Palace That's Actually in San Pedro" may sound awkward, but it's cause for well-earned satisfaction in the harbor community.
L.A. Weekly just added the Warner Grand Theatre to the "Best of L.A.: Arts & Entertainment" list. It's nice to see the theater described as a "magnificent art deco / moderne structure that would fit right in" along Broadway's "famous row of architecturally striking vintage movie palaces, which include the Los Angeles Theatre, the Orpheum Theatre and the Theatre at Ace Hotel."
The Warner Grand is big brother to the Grand Annex, with both owned and managed by the nonprofit Grand Vision Foundation. The latter venue often appears in The Guide's list of "picks," since it's frequently the venue that hosts Folk-Americana music performances. But everything started with the many years of community effort to preserve and restore the old movie palace that is the Warner Grand. We add our congratulations to the art and architecture lovers who proved that community effort can change the entire character and reputation of a town, and create a legacy of opportunity for future generations to perform, to aspire, to achieve, and to dream.

DEEP DIVE ARCHIVE / RESOURCES DEPARTMENT
Visiting those "Tuneful Times Past" with The Guide...
The Guide has PLENTY o' music history archived, back to when Lassie was a little bitty puppy dog, Napoleon was a private, and banjos only had four strings. Where, o where, could all that possibly be, you say?
Wellsir, the entire history and past content of the Guide, at least since we moved the archival editions to Blogspot years 'n years ago, is searchable at the basic url:
http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com
Seriously: Escape the unpleasantries of the current moment by crankin' the tunes as your soundtrack, then go get lost in acoustica esoterica with memories of past performances, albums, festivals, concerts and events. Our past selves also await whenever you're bored with the pop pablum that infests mainstream media.
After all, we published THE 2017 "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA" for you, at:
http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2017/04/2017-music-festival-guide-current.html
So maybe we oughta call the Guide's archive the "Encyclopedia Nostalgica."
No? Well, since we came up with it, we'll use it on sumpin'.

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
