QUICKIE: THIS WEEKEND's EVENTS, Sat & Sun, Oct 7 & 8; PLUS, a LOT of what's beyond. Oct "picks" edition, 2017.

.
.
This edition started out as a quick one, just because we don't want you to miss anything and do the Homer Simpson "d'oh!" after it's over.

But then we realized there were things happening in the coming week and next weekend that you needed to know. Plus, we had a WHOLE BUNCHA STUFF to share about ALL the October music festivals happening here, there, 'n everywhere, and it's likely been awhile since you checked 'em out in the Guide's "Encyclopedia Festvanica," since we published that waaaay back in April.

So FESTIVALS and some select CONCERTS happening after this weekend are in here, too.

QUICKIE for this weekend. DEEP DIVE for what comes after it.

Enjoy!

♪ A TRIBUTE, ON THE RADIO...

A "TRIBUTE TO THE LATE TOM PETTY" based on his many Top-40 records, plus reminiscences from lots of music luminaries who knew him, happens all weekend on KLOS, 95.5 FM, Los Angeles. Tom Petty was a wonderful songwriter who mixed alliteration with conjured images that touched the masses with their universality. His 1986 tour with BOB DYLAN remains one of the most-talked-about collaborations in rock history.

One can't help but think that we are losing greater talents than those that the corporate pop music machine foists on us as their replacements. Of course, those of us who buy tickets for concerts and festivals where folk-Americana artists are the dominant performers? We can claim not to be aware of, or influenced by, whatever Big Music does. But our entire culture erodes when pop music becomes so abominable that most of us declare it irrelevant. We can wait and hope for songwriters like Tom Petty to come along again, but we'll likely wait a looooong time.

* This is a splendid 1920s festival, and always a Guide favorite. Here's the info from the Guide's "Encyclopedia Festivanica":
✔ TIX: It's free.
✔ CAMPING: No.
✔ THE SCENE: The music of the 1920s-era is a pure delight, and this is probably the only place you can hear multiple bands perform it live, including vocalists who perfectly replicate the styles. Silent movies screen with live piano and organ accompaniment, just as they did when the great movie palaces were built. Special exhibitions and tours of the museum are free during the festival. Period dress is encouraged — and Prohibition is strictly enforced! There's a car, truck and tractor show of vehicles of the era. safely distanced from the stages, you can listen to hand-crank Victrolas playing the very thick records of the time. And you can even bring a picnic to enjoy in the museum’s picnic area or by the picturesque pond, and many do that in full a920s style. Bring spending money for food and shopping. Runs 3-7 pm both days; arrive a bit early to get parking, because the lots fill-up completely.
✔ NOTE: Free ONLINE MUSIC. Get a blast from the early days of recorded music with the Homestead's "Ticket to the Twenties" playlist. It features music from past festival artists and 1920s hits. Everything from festival artists Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys, Ian Whitcomb, and Dean Mora, to vintage originals by Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Eddie Cantor, and many more. 8 pm Monthly "CAMARILLO CAFÉ CONCERT SERIES" brings a superb billing of JAMES HURLEY plus LOIS BLAISCH AND FRIENDS, at Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St, Camarillo, CA 93010; http://camarillocafe.com; 805-814-9366.
* The Guide is a big fan of both these artists, having had them perform (separately) multiple times on the old "Tied to the Tracks" broadcast radio show when it aired from los Angeles.
* JAMES HURLEY was described by the Guide's editor, writing in Folkworks Magazine, as “One of the Top Ten Live Acoustic Male Singer Songwriters in L.A.” James Hurley’s eloquent guitar, smooth voice and masterful writing combine in a jazzy, bluesy, pop-folk that has been called “Americana, on-the-rocks…with a twist”.
* Here is an excerpt of a review the series booker wrote after seeing JAMES HURLEY live for the very first time, eight years ago, long before the two became good friends: “What do you say to describe a force of nature or a mirage of an enigma? How do you relate something you've never experienced before?.... one of the most unique performers I've ever seen… his music almost defies description at times.... reminds one of a diverse palette of genres from Hoagy Carmichael to OingoBoingo to Delta blues and all points in between. He is both a reviewer's delight and a nightmare to try to describe. His songs range from the perfectly-over-the-top 'The Vampire Song'... about the vampires of [the music industry in] Southern California [to] 'Mushroom,' where the real house of horrors comes with a hefty mortgage! But just when you think you can pigeon-hole him as a hopelessly quirky escapee of the Dr. Demento Home for the Musically Insane, he hits you with a song like 'Mountain,' a driving blues riff that is a scathing indictment of the damage done in the name of 'progress' and the 'nuisance' of conscience. Or one like 'To Carry On,' an inspirationally uplifting ballad urging us to strive through adversity. This is no 'novelty' act, though he is loaded with personality and quirkiness. James is an amazing guitarist, both in a technical and creative sense, and his voice has so much personality that you might overlook how GOOD it is, pitch perfect over a wide range, with an emotional depth."
* More at www.jameshurleymusic.com (which he expresses in song, in his only self-ptomotional jingle.)
- - -
* LOIS BLAISCH is that most rare of artists – one who knows commercial success while still retaining her artistry. She's a singer, guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer best known for writing the multi-platinum #1 Pop & AC hit "Could've Been” which was sung by Tiffany, and was later chosen by Carrie Underwood for her U.S. debut on TV's "American Idol."
* Lois’ songs have been nominated for three Grammy awards in the categories of Pop, Jazz & Children’s Music, and for “The Golden Reel Award” for the writing and singing on the theme to “Street Sharks” (a Disney TV series).
* She had a top 10 hit with jazz artist Earnestine Anderson (of Quincy Jones’ Quest records) and she’s a member of BMI’s “Million Airs” Club.
* Lois’ vocals and/or songs are featured on "Friends," "Splash," "Touched by an Angel," "Thick of the Night," "Top of The Pops," "Sailor Moon," Neil Young’s “Living with War," and “Oasis 4.”
* Her songs also appear on gold and platinum albums "Asia" and "Africa."
* She has produced and released two of her own CD’s, “Through Thick & Thin” and ”Valentine,” both released worldwide, and she is currently finishing her latest CD, "Rollercoaster."
* Neat factoids: Lois’ first professional gig was a tour of the Orient with “Bob Hope’s USO Shows” at age 18. After returning home, she performed at local nightclubs, colleges and amusement parks for a living while studying music at UCLA. Lois was invited to write music and sing for Walt Disney children's records, which resulted in song placements on three platinum Disney albums: "Mousersize", "Rainbow Bright," & Winnie the Pooh,“Take My Hand“. Lois started her studio singing career on the themes to TV shows "Stingray" and "Hunter' for Mike Post Productions and she sang lead on the feature film "Splash." Lois also sang many demos for hit songwriters Diane Warren and Steve Diamond, and on a variety of TV shows and radio commercials (Levi’s, Coke, Kaiser-Permanente, Oregon Lotto, Pepsi, Budweiser, Round Table Pizza, Van Camps, Sunny D. and Safeway).

* Donna the Buffalo just passed the marker as their 25th year as a band and have proven to be a consistent purveyor of American music. What’s the recipe? To be sure, it’s infused with more spices than you’ll find at a Cajun cookout by way of a southern-fried, rockin’ country old-time jamboree. “For the dizzying array of styles and genres with which they work, Donna The Buffalo maintain a surprising level of consistency. The New York-based band has played around with folk, zydeco, and many other musical ideas over the course of their 25-year career, but they retain a sharp focus that has helped them create some truly lasting music,” writes Elmore Magazine.

17th annual "HARDLY STRICTLY BLUEGRASS" in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA; www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com
✔ TIX: It's free.
✔ CAMPING: No.
✔ THE SCENE: It's enormous, having become the biggest free music festival in America. It features over 100 musical artists on 7 stages. The SF Chronicle says, "This is the great gift of Warren Hellman, the one and only, to not only the City of San Francisco, but the world of music." SF Gate adds, "Things You Must Do in The Bay Area Before You Die: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass." It's "Three days of treating you ears" to "Totally free live music in the park." HSB for short is an annual free and non-commercial music festival held the first weekend of October in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Conceived and subsidized by San Francisco venture capitalist Warren Hellman, the festival has been held every year since the first event in 2001. The only downside? It's so enormous (and yeah, crowded) that it really isn't possible to migrate from stage to stage, like at other multi-stage festivals. Here's some history of this astonishing event: "The first festival, which was simply titled 'Strictly Bluegrass,' took place on Saturday, October 27, 2001, and had a small but impressive lineup. Hellman’s one major request was that Hazel Dickens play the festival, and again, he got his way. Hazel Dickens appeared on the Main Stage, as did Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, and Dale Ann Bradley and Coon Creek, while a handful of other bands took to the Small Stage. As word of the free concert got out, the crowds started flocking to GG Park each October. The concert expanded from one day to three, and the lineups grew to include other bluegrass and country favorites such as Gillian Welch, Steve Earle and Robert Earl Keen, and without an ounce of egotism or much fanfare, Hellman himself, playing banjo with his band, the Wronglers. The roster soon grew to include typically non-bluegrass/country acts like Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann, Neko Case, and Conor Oberst. It was the inclusion of such non-bluegrass acts that led Hellman to add the 'Hardly' to the title of the festival in 2004, and it’s been Hardly Strictly ever since."

A bit o' historY: "Over 40 years ago, a high school journalism teacher and a carload of students heard Grand Ole Opry regular Jerry Clower spin a tale over the radio about coon hunting in Mississippi. And the teacher, Jimmy Neil Smith, had a sudden inspiration: Why not have a storytelling festival right here in northeast Tennessee? On a warm October weekend in 1973 in historic Jonesborough, the first National Storytelling Festival was held. Hay bales and wagons were the stages, and audience and tellers together didn’t number more than 60. It was tiny, but something happened that weekend that forever changed our culture, this traditional art form, and the little Tennessee town... As news of the Festival and of the movement aired on national television and in magazines as diverse as Los Angeles Times Magazine, Reader’s Digest, People, and Smithsonian, the story of how a happenstance hearing of a folktale on a car radio ignited a national movement. Did the story get told again and again because people like stories about innocent beginnings, or because they like to marvel at what can happen with the serendipitous timing of a good story and a carload of receptive listeners, or simply because it’s a colorful tale? No matter the reason, it’s a classic example of how a simple story breathes life into information people want to share with each other. As millions of story lovers all over the world already know, there is no substitute for the power, simplicity, and basic truth of the well-told story."

The Guide has PLENTY o' music history archived, back to when Lassie was a little bitty puppy dog, Napoleon was a private, and banjos only had four strings. Where, o where, could all that possibly be, you say?

Wellsir, the entire history and past content of the Guide, at least since we moved the archival editions to Blogspot years 'n years ago, is searchable at the basic url:

http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com

Seriously: Escape the unpleasantries of the current moment by crankin' the tunes as your soundtrack, then go get lost in acoustica esoterica with memories of past performances, albums, festivals, concerts and events. Our past selves also await whenever you're bored with the pop pablum that infests mainstream media.

After all, we published THE 2017 "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA" for you, at:

http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2017/04/2017-music-festival-guide-current.html

So maybe we oughta call the Guide's archive the "Encyclopedia Nostalgica."

No? Well, since we came up with it, we'll use it on sumpin'.

THIS IS HERE FOR YOU, THE ACOUSTIC MUSIC-MAKER AND FAN, SO LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK...

As always, we invite you to join us and to let us know what YOU are listening to, and what artists or bands just sent you swooning and need to be shared with others.

Doing our part depends on you doing your part. That way, you'll know that a whole lot more is always coming soon — including fresh MUSIC NEWS, PREVIEWS & REVIEWS, and more additions to our massive guide to the MUSIC FESTIVALS of 2017.

Meantime, we are ALWAYS big advocates of supporting LIVE PERFORMANCE. With everything happening in the big, wide world, and through these festival-packed, waning-of-summer weekends? Go get tuneful!

Boilerplate? Where's the main pressure gauge? And the firebox?

What "boilerplate"? Who came up with that goofy term for the basic essential informational stuff...

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
