Memorial Day Weekend & Beyond -- Festivals, Concerts, & Cooler Weather. May 25 2018 edition

.
.
TWO LATE ADDITIONS...

First... the MUSIC...

A new song for MEMORIAL DAY, "All the World Before Us," was just published May 24, 2018.

It's "written from the point of view of a statue of a fallen soldier about the people who visit the statue." You might also catch the evocation of the Statue of Liberty and more of the tragic myth of American Empire, contrasting with the reality of the soldiers' sacrifice.

The performing songwriter is the acclaimed and respected ERNEST TROOST, who you should know if you don't.

Ernest Troost has received awards and nominations, including top honors at the Kerrville Folk Fest, and bunches of Music Emmys for his writing and composing of songs and entire soundtracks for dozens of movies and other Hollywood projects. In addition, he is highly regarded as California's chief practitioner and modern contributor to the distinctive Piedmont Blues style, a form of classic Americana.

Here, he turns his heartfelt folksinger-songwriter attentions to his new song, debuting just in time for Memorial Day.

Ernest was an audience favorite as a live performing guest on the long-gone "Tied to the Tracks" broadcast / web simulcast radio show in Los Angeles.

Listen at SoundCloud:

https://soundcloud.com/ernest-troost/all-the-world-before-us-r2-c-mix-10

About the songwriter / lyricist / composer...

Stick around at the link for the autoplay and you'll hear more of his originals:

* "Little Voice," another fine song and one to which many of us can relate for our own sets of reasons. (Plus it has some fun guitar.)

* "So Much Rain," a Piedmont Blues original.

* "It's Gonna Happen Slow," more Piedmont Blues with some fine N'Awlins horn playing.

* All that leads into unnamed and unlisted tracks in a continuous stream. You'll hear a beautifully moving, slow-tempo piano, violin and cello instrumental piece that you'll enjoy, then you get more up-tempo guitar-pickin vocal blues. For sure, stick around for "Last Lullaby."

So hang out there awhile while you're banging-away on your keyboard or listening with diminishing battery through your phone's earbuds.

Second late addition...

MEMORIAL DAY ABOARD THE BATTLESHIP IOWA

The WW II USS Iowa is permanently docked in San Pedro as a museum, where it recently celebrated its 5th anniversary. Memorial Day Monday, May 28th, 2018, brings plenty of special activities and events.

Today only, active, retired, and reserve military receive FREE guided tours of the ship. (All others can buy tix on-site and check the web for discount coupons.)

There are FREE pier side Memorial Day festivities for all from 10 am-3 pm.

The SAN PEDRO CITY BALLET will perform at 12:15, 1:15 & 2:15 pm.

Opening ceremonies are at 10 am. The day includes uniformed re-enactors and historic vehicles.

While the day is about "remembrance for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation," it affords plenty of interaction with history and lots of activities.

Fun includes a "shrimp-eating contest" at 11 am, and face-painting for the kids all day.

BBQ and beverages are for sale on site from San Pedro Brewing Company.

The Battleship Iowa has become an L.A. treasure, arriving on public display the same year the Space Shuttle Orbiter went on display at the Pacific Science Center. Include both in your summer plans and put them on your must-do list for visitors from out-of-town. After all, Disneyland is way too damn expensive and too crowded to ride much of anything, anyway, while these two -- the Iowa and the Space Shuttle -- produce plenty of meaningful memories and are springboards for understanding so much more.

Memorial Day Weekend brings outstanding choices for Music Festivals. It's considered the start of summer, even though the Earth's inclination on our orbit around the sun says otherwise. But it's a holiday for a reason that has nothing to do with any of that, hence our # 1 News Feature.

Our # 2 feature is about the future of the Guide, and we ask that you take a moment to help determine whether or not we should continue, and on what basis.

COVERAGE OF EACH OF THE MUSIC FESTIVALS STARTS WITH OUR # 3 NEWS FEATURE.

# 1 news feature...

WE CAN ALL ENJOY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FOR VERY SPECIFIC REASONS

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND marks the traditional launch of summer in Southern California, even though the Spring MUSIC FESTIVAL SEASON started waaay back in March.

Saturday & Sunday of this three-day weekend offer choices and options galore for playing festivarian. As always, on Monday, the annual TOPANGA DAYS (the one that really IS in Topanga Canyon) has the festivatin' scene to itself.

Herein is as much as we can reasonably share, announce, proclaim, and celebrate about this weekend -- which became a holiday because families wanted to lay flowers on the graves of their war dead. In this age of empire that enriches the warconomy and the corporatocracy that pulls the levers to propel it, the carousel of perpetual war seems to spin too fast for anyone to get off.

And still, the lonely folk singer asks...

"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (Peter, Paul & Mary)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgXNVA9ngx8

...and challenges the
"Masters of War" (Bob Dylan)
https://www.bing.com/search?FORM=INCOH2&pc=EUPP_IC05&PTAG=ICO-fdff717&q=Masters+of+War

...and wonders how in the hell anyone going off to kill their fellow humans can believe they go
"With God on Our Side" (Andy & Renee)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsQK6XxgeAU
_ _ _

All that said? The last time totalitarian regimes tried to take over the world, ordinary citizens answered the call in a grand alliance. It included the people and armed forces of the UK (which stood alone against the Nazis in the beginning, after all of continental Europe had fallen); they were joined by the Canadians, by the exiled Free French, the Free Poles, Free Dutch, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Indians (both Hindu and Muslim), Egyptians, Ethiopians, and others. And -- after Hitler attacked them -- the allies included the Russians and other peoples from across the Soviet Union -- who would, by far, bear the greatest losses, with 26 and a half and 27 million Russians killed. And then, finally -- after being attacked by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941, the Americans came to the grand alliance, with all the industrial might and vast resources of the New World.

Fast forward to our time. Each passing day, the number of surviving veterans of World War II diminishes appreciably and globally. The youngest among them turned 90 in the past year. The vets of Korea are leaving us. And then came the vets of Vietnam, and the vets of the endless series of wars for oil and empire that have sadly characterized the new millenium. And these veterans include far too many homeless, living in the streets of the richest country on Earth. And nowhere are homeless military veterans in greater numbers than in America.

So, as you prepare that holiday feast or beer fest -- or if you pause to go out to lay flowers on a grave -- think about observing Memorial Day and extending its meaning into the days to come. The days we have to enjoy because someone came before us who gave us the chance.

Think of making the future a little bit better as a way of paying-back the sacrifice someone made to give us the chance to enjoy beer and barbecues and baseball. Think of signing-up to donate food or time or talent, or simply to make your commitment to, as Lincoln promised, "care for he (and she) who shall have borne the burden, and for his widow, and his orphan."

And if we all get together to do a little bit of that? Perhaps we also can work on making sure the numbers of all these discarded veterans is never allowed to increase again. Happy Memorial Day.

# 2 news feature...

THE FUTURE OF THE GUIDE -- IT'S VERY MUCH IN DOUBT

Recently we mentioned that we are getting 200-300 messages each day, 7x365, about music events, requests for review, submissions for listening, offers to attend all sorts of things, interview opportunities, and far more than we can do.

We should add that the foregoing distillation of facts can't begin to represent what they mean when you're the one on the receiving end. Simply put, the sheer volume of all this requires far more time, JUST TO READ IT, than we can hope to invest in it. Please understand, we're talking about what's necessary just for us to open each message to see what it is. So that's before we can even think about digesting it to determine if we should be interested on your behalf. And before we can give it the required journalistic fact-check. And along the way, having to divert to do searches to find the vital information that, far too often, is only partially present in what is sent to us. And only after all that are we ready to write about it for presentation to you.

Folks, we can't do it anymore.

We're considering downgrading the Guide into a Gestaltic flow of some of what we receive, pretty much in the form we get it. We don't like that idea because, frankly, this has always been a classy joint, and that would make it look like a flop house.

But at least it wouldn't be another spyware-ridden Facebook, where everything you click, every place you linger, everything you do, say, write, look at, or even momentarily peruse, is tracked and analyzed and SOLD to interests who use it all against you.

But we mention Facebook for another reason. Quite simply, we want you to ask yourself a question: Is everything you need to know about finding Acoustic and Americana Music events, festivals, shows, albums, participatory events (and the things we bust our ass to bring you here), are they all available to you on social media? And if they are, then please tell us, specifically, what's here that you come looking to find? i.e., why do come to the Guide?

Which brings us to the big issue: HAS SOCIAL MEDIA MADE THE GUIDE OBSOLETE? Or is finding a fresh edition of The Guide important to your sanity in this increasingly nutty world?

If you get the idea that we are wondering if it's time to pull the plug... to get the mics off the mic stands... turn-off the house lights... kill the fire in the locomotive's firebox... board-up the depot... abandon the turntable in front of the roundhouse... and even tear-up the tracks over the mountain and into the valley where the string music and sweet harmony vocals linger in the pine wood... if you're wondering those things, then you're right, that's where we are with this.

ONE OTHER ALTERNATIVE: Would you be willing to contribute regularly to enable us to compensate someone to ride herd on all this stuff and get fresh editions published regularly? (We could set-up a Pay Pal if enough of you would use it.)

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE: if someone out there has always wanted to be editor of a well-established online publication with a global readership? Now's the time to speak up.

# 3 news feature...

SIMI VALLEY CAJUN & BLUES FESTIVAL, May 26th & 27th

Running Saturday & Sunday, 11:45 am-7 pm both days, this one is in a spacious park with two big stages spaced far enough apart that you won't hear one when you're at the other. It's a fine event, in the park at 5005 Los Angeles Av, Simi Valley, CA 93063.

While we list the basic lineups for both stages (just below) to help you decide which day to go, all the many other details, like whether or not you can take your dog, what there is to eat, and more, are at the festival's own website, at: http://www.simicajun.org.

This is the second of three big local spring Cajun-zydeco-blues-N'Awlins music 'n dance fests in Southern Cal, and it's just over the hill in Simi. So if San Diego was too far for "Gator By the Bay," fear not. Also, note that this one is followed by the LONG BEACH BAYOU FESTIVAL coming June 23rd & 24th (http://longbeachbayou.com/).

Simi and Long Beach each offer plenty of individual character and charm, so don't regard them as interchangeable -- they're not. For one thing, the blues stage at this one gets top billing.

True, all three of these local Cajun festivals feature top performers from Louisiana, food from the region, music to give you happy feet, and on-site zydeco dance lessons to equip you to do something about that. And yes, you'll leave any of these events with a sense of a rich and vital regional culture -- and some understanding of the fortitude of folks who have endured so much without burning down Washington. Another thing? If you attend one of these Cajun fests, you'll want more. As Thibodeau and Boudreau say, "Dat's Guar-on-teed."

SIMI VALLEY CAJUN &BLUES FESTIVAL partic'lars...

* Blues Stage: Lightnin’ Willie, Bo Dollis, Jr. & The Wild Magnolias, Devon Allman Project with Duane Betts, Dave Mason, Alex Nester, more.

SCOTTISH FESTIVAL IN OC

Running 9 am-6 pm both Saturday & Sunday, it's sponsored by the United Scottish Society (www.unitedscottishsociety.com). This one takes-over the OC Fair & Events Center (Orange County Fairgrounds), 88 Fair Dr, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

The long-running annual event features stage performances of Celtic bands and music artists ranging from traditional to Celtic rock, plus Scottish dancing, performances by the Massed Bands (bagpipe, fife and drum bands clad in tartan kilts and competing with one another), Celtic Clan gatherings, and "Scottish Heavy Athletics" with their feats of skill, strength, and accuracy in throwing ridiculously heavy objects long distances through the air.

Featured performers include CHRISTOPHER YATES, BAD HAGGIS, CELTISH, COLIN ARMSTRONG AND KEVIN MCINTYRE, HIGHLAND WAY, the lovely KRIS COLT, THOSE MANNING BHOYS, MARINE SANDPIPER, THE PLOUGHBOYS, ROYAL SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCERS, SCOTTISH FIDDLERS OF LOS ANGELES, SLIGO RAGS (taking a break from their residency playing Disneyland), STAND EASY, WICKED TINKERS, and, Sunday only, The THIRD MARINE AIRCRAFT WING BAND.

# 5 news feature...

TOPANGA DAYS -- THE ONLY ONE STILL RUNNING ON MONDAY

The 45th annual "TOPANGA DAYS" runs all three days of the holiday weekend, on the terraced hillside grounds, on the grassy ballfields, and in the buildings at the Topanga Community House, 1440 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga CA 90290.

Wherever you were Saturday and Sunday, this is the fun place to land Monday. Be aware that the road is closed for a time Monday morning for the locals' parade, so get in there plenty early to get parked and watch the band-bedecked and quite colorful homegrown floats -- or else you'll need to wait to get into the canyon after the parade wraps-up.

Details on all that and more, including tix, are at: https://topangadays.com/

The music lineup on two stages brings different bands each of the three days. Folkies will especially like the following (of course, there are plenty more bands):

* SATURDAY, on the Corral Stage catch Tommy Teeple & Todd Tragar & the Quantum Hitch Hikers, 1:40-2:30 pm; the Topanga Ukulele Revival, 2:50-3:40 pm; Jim Crawford & the Hot Toddies, 5:10-6:10 pm.

* SUNDAY, on the Corral Stage, there's The Regulars, 1:30-2:20 pm; and those wowsa faves, The Topanga Belly Dancers, 2:50-3:40 pm; a band named The Flaw plays, 4-4:50 pm.

* MONDAY, on the Main Stage, catch McCabe's faves Venice, 2-3:30 pm; and start earlier on the Corral Stage, with Coyotes of Topanga, 12:10-12:50 pm; be sure to catch the ever-delightful hosts of the annual "Dylanfest," Andy & Renee & Hard Rain, 1:10-2:30 pm; there's good tunage from local travelin' duo Jewels & Johnny Nation, 2:50-3:40 pm; and the closing ensemble looks interesting, playing with the moniker of the Corral Stage Band, 5:10-6:10 pm.

OUT-OF-TOWN MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND MUSIC FESTIVALS

We bring you two.
_ _ _

The annual "STRAWBERRY MUSIC FESTIVAL" in Northern Cal is one that attracts plenty of regulars every year -- actually, make that two times a year, since there's one in the spring and one in the fall.

The one underway now features performances by Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Lukas Nelson & The Promise of The Real, Anders Osborne & Jackie Greene, Frazey Ford, The Revelers, Keith Little and The Littleband, Ghost of Paul Revere, Lindsay Lou, Dangermuffin, Sam Reider & The Human Hands, Duo Quartet featuring Chris Webster, Nina Gerber & Pam Delgado (the one we'd most like to see); Jeri Jones, The Suitcase Junket, Banana Slug String Band, and more.

It happens in the mountains northeast of Sacramento, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, 11228 McCourtney Rd, Grass Valley, CA 95949; phone is 209-984-8630; website for this one and its fall counterpart is www.strawberrymusic.com
_ _ _

The "NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL" is absolutely enormous, FREE, and loads of fun. It happens at Seattle Center, the city's old World's Fair site, reachable by monorail within Seattle, WA.

This one is more than you knew was possible to see, hear, or make happen over an extended four-day weekend. There are well over a dozen stages with hundreds of performances, participatory events like every kind of folk dancing that anybody knows how to do, and dozens of free music workshops. It's amazing.

Their website has everything you need to know to go, and to make you want to schedule going next year: www.nwfolklife.org/festival

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS – and views of interest to artists everywhere – more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
