* In a career that spans more than four decades, Flores has proven to be a musical chameleon. She’s jumped feet first into punk rock (with her ’70-era band, the Screaming Sirens), country of both the Bakersfield and Nashville varieties, the Texas singer/songwriter scene, alt-country, straight-up rock and rockabilly. So much so the latter that her onstage moniker for years was “The Rockabilly Filly.” But always and throughout, she has been the Chick with the Pick.
* Over the years, Flores has been profiled in Guitar World, Premiere Guitar and Guitar Player magazines. Venuszine cited Flores as one of the “Top 75 Greatest Female Guitarists of All Time” by Venuszine magazine. She performed at a tribute to Chuck Berry at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. She has worked with, and helped propel back in to the spotlight, pioneer female rockabilly artists Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin. In 2007, she won a Peabody Award for her narration of the rockabilly documentary, Whole Lotta Shakin’. She worked with Martin in producing the latter’s 2012 album, The Blanco Sessions, which would prove to be Martin’s last recording.
* Alternative country meets the rockabilly revival meets California guitar virtuosity in the music of Rosie Flores. Since the late '70s, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Rosie Flores has been an important figure on the alternative country scene in both Austin, TX, and Los Angeles. She's a hard-working, independently minded artist who's well-respected for her gritty, energetic vocals and fiery guitar solos.
* Prolifically creative, Flores deserves to be numbered among the creators of the alternative country movement. Her career, never really flagging, has outlasted those of a host of other acts in that fast-moving genre.
PLUS...
* Nocona - this band's roots are in Texas – songwriter, lead guitarist, and singer Chris Isom’s family are 6th generation Texans – but the band’s sun and stars rise over California. According to Chris Isom, "NOCONA" is an old Tejas word. He says, “Nocona is the area in Texas where my Mom’s family originally lived. It comes from the Comanche word for Wanderers or Travelers.”
* They are a rock band with history who draw their roots from Country, Folk, Punk, Rock and psychedelia. Their high-energy act takes a full ensemble cast to create such a wall of sound. Alongside Chris Isom is his wife, Adrienne Isom on bass and vocals, Justin Smith on drums and vocals, Elan Glasser on Harmonica, Dan Wistrom on pedal steel and Xander Hitzig on fiddle.
* The pairing with Rosie Flores makes perfect sense. They both have Texas roots, they both blend many influences into their music and both can rev up an audience with their rock and roll guitar riffs! The band first met and shared the stage in Austin, TX with Flores at a SXSW day party for St. Vincents De Paul in 2015. This past SXSW, they also shared a stage for the Rebelle Road day party held in South Austin. Adrienne Isom, a founding member of the all-women, Rebelle Road Production Company has always been taken with Flores and wanted to have a chance to play with her in L.A. “She’s a legend and a hero and we’re so honored to be playing this show with her,” she effused.

What you will NOT find this year in the Guide are any events specific to CINCO DE MAYO or any local music-related events for the KENTUCKY DERBY. We prominently feature both, when we know. ACTIVIST ACTIVITIES INCLUDE A NEED FOR FUN, AND WE'VE FOUND IT FOR YOU

While the abundance of spring events arrives full-force this weekend, we wouldn't expect you to read this unless it has a sociopolitical dimension. Okay, we'll address that with a proposition: the best way to energize your activism is to find inspiration in diverse places, to feed your heart as well as your intellect. Herewith are programs and events that have an ability to inform, to inspire, and along the way, to entertain. Because, well, things that are not exclusively political aren't devoid of meaning. Like art and music that can empower with imagery and songs you'll find yourself humming for weeks to come.

Isn't it time you got away from the apocalyptic Chicken Little sheepdip of cable news, and quested for actualization of your ethical admonitions while immersing yourself in some (drum roll maestro) FUN? We thought so. C'est voila.

We aren't ignoring the serious. Of course you've been reading in these cyber pages about this weekend's 2018 UNITED STATE OF WOMEN SUMMIT [https://www.theunitedstateofwomen.org/], happening Friday and Saturday in L.A. It's just that, whether or not you're attending, there's more.

Here are some recommendations -- tested in the wash with colorfast bleach to be relevant, meaningful, and free of shrinkage. All these activities, programs, events and festivals happen this month, starting this weekend.

Saturday & Sunday, May 5th & 6th:

* The 56th annual SIERRA MADRE ART FAIR is a delightful free event in Memorial Park, 222 W Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA. There's live music and plenty of art exhibitors, some working in realms of social themes. If you need to ease into a respite and you're having withdrawal from cable news talking heads, you might try a short foray to this one. Either way, our other Saturday and Sunday recommendations are more focused, so stay with us.

Saturday, May 5 (two events):

* The 17th annual SOKA UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL is especially welcome in a time of trashed diplomacy and a national leader who talks about "s-hole countries." Even without the gauche rudeness from the Twitster-in-Chief, it's always good to find artistic expression, smiling faces and tasty victuals from cultures other than your own. This festival runs 10:30 AM to 5 PM, and features more than 700 international musicians and dancers, 250 exhibitors, international food, a children's "Adventure Land" with games and inflatable rides, art exhibitions, ceramic sales and demonstrations. It's presented by Soka University's Performing Arts Center and held in the Peace Lake Area of the campus, at 1 University Dr., Aliso Viejo, CA 92656. Info at 949-480-4278 or online. * If you're inclined to stay serious, there's also "Some Like it Hot: Climate." It's a Saturday program at the Glendale Central Public Library, 2-3:30 PM. The speaker is Robert Haw of NASA's JPL and Citizens Climate Lobby. Also see May 22nd, below, for another program on climate change.

Sunday, May 6 (two events):

* The 28th annual DYLANFEST is noon-8 pm. With opportunities and encouragement for audience participation, it's a celebration of the timeless and broadly influential music of Bob Dylan, the poet laureate of the entire rock era. What else will fortify your motivation better than "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Masters of War"-? And if you're too young to know those songs, find 'em on YouTube and you'll immediately want to attend to meet like-minded art-appreciating kindred folks. This event has a solid record of excellence, with record-fast, nearly seamless stage changes for its enormous lineup of performers. Even the house band features horn players, keyboards, string players, and drummers and percussionists from big-name road bands. Plus, there and no repeats of any song. Really, you won't want to go in the bathroom for fear of missing something. Since the very first one, the musical hosts are the stunningly wonderful Andy Hill & Renee Safier and their multiple-award-winning band Hard Rain. It's at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, outdoors on the shaded Torino Plaza, 3330 Civic Center Dr, Torrance, CA 90503. * THE CAPITOL STEPS, that D.C.-based musical-comedy-dance troupe comprised of former congressional staffers, is in town for an 8 PM show at Caltech. It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or Republican, a snowflake or a deplorable -- neither side is safe from the group that puts the "mock" in Democracy. The show is in Beckman Auditorium, the big "wedding cake" performance center, at 332 S. Michigan Ave., Pasadena, CA 91106. Tickets and info at the Caltech Public Events site. Thursday, May 10, through Sunday, May 13, a four-day event:

The annual GATOR BY THE BAY FESTIVAL [https://www.gatorbythebay.com/] might be just the ticket if you're on the verge of running off screaming. There is, in fact, a time-honored zydeco custom wherein a musician on stage shouts to the audience, "Somebody scream!" You can get tix for one day or all four.

This one is the first of three big local Cajun-zydeco-blues-N'Awlins music 'n dance fests, so if San Diego is too far, fear not. It's followed by the closer-to-home SIMI VALLEY CAJUN & BLUES FESTIVAL May 26th & 27th [http://www.simicajun.org/], and the LONG BEACH BAYOU FESTIVAL June 23rd & 24th [http://longbeachbayou.com/].

All three of these local Cajun festivals feature top performers from Louisiana, food from the region, music to give you happy feet, and on-site zydeco dance lessons to equip you to do something about that. You'll leave with a sense of a rich and vital regional culture -- and some understanding of the fortitude of folks who have endured so much without burning down Washington. Another thing? If you attend one of these fests, you'll want to get to the other two. Guar-on-teed. Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19:

The 13th annual, or as the event bills itself, "13th Ever" OLD TIME SOCIAL [http://losangelesoldtimesocial.com/] brings a dive into the late 19th-early 20th century tuneful fun. The elements of that culture were largely what sustained all those coal miners who were staring-down Pinkerton thugs, and farmers who needed to stay sane in the Dust Bowl. This is deep roots Americana, with a concert, workshops on music, dance, and culture, plenty for kids, and traditional dances that feature a cakewalk. It's at various L.A. locations that change each of the three days.

Friday & Saturday, May 18 & 19:

"REDACTED TONIGHT" creator and host LEE CAMP plays a pair of L.A. shows that double as taping nights for his upcoming TV special. And speaking of special, his guest act is L.A.-based JIMMY DORE who you know from KPFK. If you don't know Lee, you should. His YouTube audience is global and massive. If you do know his insightful and "inciteful" comedic indictments of Trump, congress, Big Pharma, corporate Democrats, anti-science Republicans, the US Empire, the warconomy and the corporatocracy, then no one needed to tell you to get tickets [http://leecamp.com/schedule/] for at least one night. We'll bring you our interview with Lee Camp here in the LA Progressive next week. But waste no time getting your tickets before they're gone. He's that good. Sunday, May 20:

If it throws you that we're recommending you attend the TOPANGA BANJO FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL [http://www.topangabanjofiddle.org/], the moment of full-disclosure will only explain part of it.

Two of us whose analyses, prognostications and pontifications appear in the LA Progressive are longtime emcees on the Railroad Stage. We always welcome a chance to meet you and give you a glimpse of our multifaceted existences and alter egos. Look for me in the black cowboy hat and we'll exchange a howdy. Look for fellow writer Tom Hall wearing a black top hat. It matches the old hearse he drives for special occasions like this one.

The real reason to attend is to be blown away by the dedication and talent of so many young contestants, along with the professional acts and the endless and superbly innovative musical "jamming" groups under every grove of oak trees. Nuthin' quite like it anywhere else in these parts.

And yes, you can hear folk songs that were and are anthems of labor organizing, civil rights, women's rights, the peace movement, and more.

Whether or not you caught the May 5th program on climate change, this one is similarly excellent. "What Can We Do about Global Warming?" will be held at Crowell Public Library in San Marino at 7 PM. It features Thomas Flood, Professor Emeritus of USC Chemistry & Environmental Studies.

We'll intentionally stop short of the Memorial Day Weekend. That's too much, because we don't want the delightful (and meaningful) things we've recommended above to play second fiddle to anything else.

Remember to get your tickets for Lee Camp. He'll stimulate your thinking as well as your funny bone. Meantime, we hope also to see you at these other events.

Just where does Vance Joy fit on the musical spectrum? If he's folk, it's a latter-day Fairport Covention kind. If he's pop, it sure as hell isn't the generic, ubiquitous and annoying soundalike junk with the human voice processed into roboticized Justin Bieber excruciations. And it certainly is NOT electronica-electrocution Frankensteinian crap that has infested pop music for the last half-decade.

This guy backs his vocals with his acoustic string playing and delightful accompaniments. And he's considered pop.

In a sense, he's part of a newish Invasion, 50 years after the first one from other countries where British English reigns. This go 'round began with Brits Mumford & Sons, while Vance is from Australia, with some Irish roots. And your ear tells you that Vance Joy brings plenty of lost (or at least underemphasized) American music forms back to New World prominence, delighting audiences where sounds like his were invented and discarded by the disposable paradigms of American consumerism and Big Music that's all business and no art.

Of course, for longtime readers of The Guide, you've seen us celebrate plenty of superbly talented acoustic artists with great melodies who aren't really folkies, are kinda-sorta-folk-Americana, who deliver music with delightful instrumentation, vocals and musicality, and who certainly deserve bigger audiences than the Big Music singularity will allow. Too damn few get signed to major labels or get to play the big venues. Vance Joy is one who does.

CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAMS, ONE THIS SATURDAY, ONE MAY 22nd


Climate change is the focus of two L.A. events this month. Each is presented by a recognized scientific expert and offers a chance to learn more about the complexities of the problem as well as some possible solutions.

Saturday, May 5, "Some Like it Hot: Climate" happens at the Glendale Central Public Library this 2-3:30 PM. The speaker is Robert Haw of NASA's JPL and Citizens Climate Lobby.
