SATURDAY MORNING, JAN 19th, LOOK UP IN THE SKY, AT 11:05 AM...
At 11:05 am Saturday, January 19, from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex (SLC) 6, the many failed attempts to get this thing off the ground are finally supposed to produce a launch of the BIGGEST rocket capable of being launched from the West Coast, and the third largest rocket in the world.

At 11:05 am Saturday, January 19, from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex (SLC) 6, the many failed attempts to get this thing off the ground are finally supposed to produce a launch of the BIGGEST rocket capable of being launched from the West Coast, and the third largest rocket in the world.
As it rides an enormous plume of flame into space, the "Delta IV Heavy" rocket may briefly be visible to the west from the Los Angeles area, paralleling the coast as it tracks southward. It should easily be seen from the Ventura-Santa Barbara coast, and even inland to the northern High Desert, unless clouds hose us. It is taking the Supersecret NROL-71 spy mission into a polar orbit. The satellite -- whatever it is -- is the size of the Hubble space telescope, or put another way, the size of a city bus.
Now, if it leaves the ground on time at 11:05 am, it may be a minute and a half or so before the curvature of the Earth let's you see it. So be patient. And keep reading for the live video feed you can watch on your phone or tablet.
We covered the Space X launch of the Iridium-8 Mission aboard a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket for you on a recent Friday. That one was quite exciting, launching the final 10 Iridium satellites into polar orbit and deploying them one-at-a-time, on camera, to complete the 75-satellite constellation. Those satellites provide L- band voice and data coverage to satellite phones, pagers, and integrated transceivers over the entire surface of the Earth.
THIS ONE is all cloak and dagger, except for the LAUNCH. They have no choice but to go-public, lest millions will see the spectacle and flood the 9-1-1 switchboards reporting an alien invasion.

We've been TRYING to get you outside at the correct moment to see this GIANT rocket since back when Lassie was a little bitty puppy dog. But they keep finding reasons not to launch it. This time marks the longest delay between attempts. So they should have fixed everything by now. And replaced all the secret batteries that died sitting on the not-so-secret launch pad.

AFFECTED BY THE GOV SHUTDOWN? AFL-CIO COMMUNITY SERVICES CAN HELP
Here at ther Guide, we went looking for any kind of financial assistance available to government workers who are being forced to work without pay, or are furloughed indefinitely from their jobs. Plus, we wanted to know if contract employees who are locked-out of their jobs at government facilities are eligible for any help.
You probably know that January 11th was supposed to be a federal payday. And 800,000+ employees -- plus many thousands of contractors -- received pay stubs showing "zero" in the pay column.
This is not the place to get into the lunacy of why this is happening.
We are pleased to report that we did find mechanisms in place to help, established and operated by the AFL-CIO unions. Here's what we Yael Foa, National Community Engagement Coordinator, AFL-CIO, told us:
United Way, one of the AFL-CIO’s national partners, supports 2-1-1, a free nationwide information and referral line that helps people find local resources they may be eligible to obtain 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The 2-1-1 line can be accessed by phone or computer. A toll-free call to 2-1-1 connects you to a community resource specialist in your area who can put you in touch with local organizations that provide critical services, including:
• Supplemental food and nutrition programs;
• Shelter and housing options, and utilities assistance;
• Employment and education opportunities;
• Services for veterans; and
• Health care and mental health services.
Call 2-1-1 and speak with a live, highly trained service professional in your area from any cell phone or landline. All calls are private and confidential, and assistance is available in multiple languages.

IF THE L.A.TEACHER'S STRIKE REALLY HAPPENS
In response to the LAUSD strike if it happens, the GRAMMY Museum will offer free onsite general admission to all LAUSD students with Student ID, from Monday, Jan 14 through Friday, Jan 18.
Museum hours are Monday-Thursday (Museum closed on Tuesday), 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, and Friday, 10 am to 8 pm.

Just tag this one, from the "In-case-you-didn't-know-it-was-all-rigged" department:
The White House Counsel's office has advised all Cabinet Secretaries to have their agencies begin using the phrase, "Border crisis" at every opportunity. But not for the obvious reason you expect. It's because the administration's lawyer wants to create an avalanche of examples he can use in "legal citations" to "prove" that "the government" sees a border crisis.
Too bad it isn't the actual crisis 400,000+ federal government employees are living, because they are furloughed and can't go do their work.
Or the crisis an additional 400,000+ federal employees are experiencing because they must go to work or face criminal charges, even though they can't get paid.
Or the crisis being experienced by small business people who supply government offices that are now shuttered, or make their livings from serving the needs of tourists in and around National Parks, National Monuments, Civil War Battlefield Parks, and all the other places where tourists suddenly can't go because those places are unfunded and closed.
But it's okay to create an ersatz crisis by having everybody say there is one, and then quoting them because they said so. Yosarian would let-out that appreciative whistle at the elegantly simple and corrupt beauty of this "Catch 22."

* The exhibit looks at "what made the world fall in love with East L.A. native Richard "Cheech" Marin and Canadian Tommy Chong, while chronicling the development and success of their first feature-length film, 'Up In Smoke.' Items on display will include the original marked-up script from 'Up In Smoke,' the master tape for the soundtrack album, comedy sketches, and selections from Marin's 'Blazing Chicano Guitars' collection, among other items. 10 am-5 pm - "POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION" at the Reagan Library, 40 Presidential Dr, Simi Valley, CA, 93065
* Go back in time with this spectacular exhibit to relive the lost world of Ancient Rome. Pompeii was a playground, the Las Vegas of its time. Until the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius encased all of it -- including its people -- in a deep layer of volcanic ash that fell from the sky like a deadly blizzard.
* When rediscovery of Pompeii came accidentally in the digging of a well, a period ensued of raiding the buried city for treasure. Then, in large measure because of the greedy raiding, much of what became modern archaeology developed to document, understand, and protect the integrity of the lost civilization.
* This awe-inspiring exhibition features nearly 200 artifacts hidden from view and forgotten for centuries until rediscovered over 250 years ago. "Pompeii: The Exhibition" includes frescoes, mosaics, gladiator helmets, armor, weapons, plates, furniture, jewelry, statues, and more.
* Plaster casts of people who were buried alive in the ash are included -- the ash encased them, and their presence literally left a void that could be reclaimed by wet plaster.
* A 4-D eruption theater is key interpretive element, allowing visitors to experience the deathly impact Mount Vesuvius had on this ancient city.

* Battleship IOWA Museum was chosen to launch “Lost at Sea: The Explorations of Dr. Robert Ballard” before it goes elsewhere. Ballard is known the world over for his discovery of the final resting place of the Titanic; yet, he has quested for and found many more vessels whose origins date over the past 2,000 years. Their common fate was that they have been claimed by our oceans and seas. Many lie undisturbed as what Ballard calls “undersea museums,” and these are revealed to visitors aboard the historic USS IOWA.
* This retrospective is a showcase for the Iowa to highlight many of the world’s most historically noted underwater wrecks, found by the explorer.
* “Lost at Sea: The Explorations of Dr. Robert Ballard” was made possible by a generous grant from the Confidence Foundation and is jointly sponsored by Dr. Robert Ballard, the Port of Los Angeles, Ocean Exploration Trust, and AltaSea.
* The "Lost at Sea" exhibit is included with General Admission to the Battleship IOWA. Museum ticket office opens daily at 10 am and the last tour ticket is sold at 4 pm. GO OUTSIDE AND WATCH THE ROCKET LAUNCH AT 7:31 AM
At 7:31 am, from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex (SLC) 4e, Space X will launch the Iridium-8 Mission aboard a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket. The rocket may briefly be visible to the west from the Los Angeles area, and should easily be seen from Santa Barbara and the central coast. It is taking the final 10 Iridium satellites into polar orbit to complete the 75-satellite constellation. These satellites provide L- band voice and data coverage to satellite phones, pagers, and integrated transceivers over the entire surface of the Earth.

We know, you thought it would be that GIANT rocket we've been updating, each time they try and fail to get it off the ground. Yeah, well, it was re-re-re-re (etc) scheduled for today, but It's scrubbed again... this time because the Iridium Mission was already set. We'll keep you posted.

Well, it's launch is now rescheduled (re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-scheduled) for today, JANUARY 11th, with time of day tba.
All the info about the rocket and the mission are still news, by definition, because it's still supposed to happen and it's still on its launch pad and it'll still blaze across the Southern California sky when (make that whenever) it finally does happen. * STEVE POSTELL is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/composer and producer. His last solo CD for Immergent Records features a host of brilliant guests who have worked with him over the years, including David Crosby, Jennifer Warnes, John Oates, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, and many others.. His latest CD features a star studded cast including guest appearances by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Michael McDonald.
* JAMES RAYMOND is an accomplished musician, producer, songwriter and composer who most recently served as musical director and keyboardist for the David Crosby & Friends Sky Trails world tour. James also recently scored the film My Name Is Myeisha, which racked up honors including the Audience Award at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival. An adopted child, James learned what to attribute some of his talent to, when he was reunited with his birth father David Crosby. James has toured and or recorded with Crosby, Stills & Nash, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Warren Zevon, CSNY, Oleta Adams, Ronnie Laws and many others.
* JONATHAN McEUEN was born to play music and bring joy to those listening. His dad was a famous rock star banjo picker (John McEuen of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band). * PBS says, "'The Swamp' chronicles the repeated efforts to conquer what was once seen as useless wasteland and the passionate efforts to preserve it."
* Editor's note: The Seminole Indians took refuge in the Florida swamps when the white man's treaties proved to be breakable lies of convenience; the Seminoles, who became synonymous with those storied wetlands, were not originally indigenous to the Everglades. And as recently as the 1980s, one of the world's largest would-be airports had its runways built in the midst of the Everglades, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, before the egomanically crazy project was stopped. land they’ve protected, collectively, for more than 60 years.

Bradley Bischoff brings Vocals, lead and rhythm guitar. Stationed in the
rugged South Boundary region of Jasper National Park in incomparably beautiful
Alberta, Bradley began his national park warden lifestyle in 1981. Assigned
alone to the backcountry with a handful of horses for seventeen days at a time,
Bradley penned many songs by the dim cabin lights and the dusky summers spent
in the high alpine ranges.

Ray Schmidt provides Vocals, upright bass, and mandolin. Currently
posted in Rogers Pass, British Columbia, Ray works with grizzly bears in the
interior rainforest of Glacier National Park. Ray founded The Wardens in 2009,
with Scott Ward, during the national park warden centennial after discovering
the rich depth of music and stories within this region of Canada.

Scott Ward does Vocals and plays fingerstyle guitar. A national park
warden for over 30 years in Banff National Park, Scott's music stems from a
life lived in the deep wilderness of the Canadian Rockies as a horseman,
search-and-rescue dog handler, and technical alpine specialist. Evoking the
haunting fingerstyle guitar of Gordon Lightfoot with the mystique and presence
of Ian Tyson, Scott's music embodies Canadian authenticity. In 2001, Scott was
awarded the "Governor General's Award" for "Exemplary Service as
a Peace Officer."

four-piece ensemble of drums, keys, and guitar, with himself on vox/bass.
Chaney’s songwriting inhabits the Americana realm, mixing elements of folk,
gospel, and rock ‘n roll.
* Clayton has been on stage many
times at The Coffee Gallery Backstage as former front man of the indie-folk
group, The Show Ponies. This performance will be his first live show with these
new songs. You can get a taste of the upcoming goodness at his website here.
* Chaney is a rare breed of
front-man/bassists well-versed in the techniques of melodic story telling. His
songs have a way of preserving hope in a world steeped in sadness and cynicism
while confronting the fears and failures that come along with being human. As
the former co-lead singer of The Show Ponies, Chaney has experienced America’s
big cities and small towns from stages around the country. He was very sad when
he sold his Ford Econoline after the band stopped touring in 2017.
* He draws inspiration from the
old sounds of Roger Miller and Elvis Presley while indulging in newer
influences such as Dawes, John Moreland and Jonny Fritz. As a native of
Arkansas and long time resident of Southern California, Chaney’s songs seem to
reconcile a traditional upbringing in Middle America with an ever-changing
coming-of-age on the West Coast. This contemplative blend of folk, gospel, and
rock ’n roll is what Clayton Chaney is known for as his catalogue of original
songs continues to expand.

* What is Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Music?
Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar (ki ho'alu) is truly one of the world’s great acoustic guitar traditions, considered to be one of the oldest music traditions to still be a viable (other than just historical) part of a modern culture. Ki ho'alu, which literally means to "loosen the key," is the Hawaiian language name for the solo finger-picked style unique to Hawaii. In this tradition, the strings (or "keys") are "slacked" to produce many different tunings, which usually contain a major chord, or a chord with a major 7th note, or sometimes one with a 6th note in it. Each tuning produces a lingering sound behind the melody and has a characteristic resonance and fingering, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.
* This year’s Southern California Slack Key Festival’s line-up includes George Kuo , Kawika Kahiapo, Sonny Lim, Jeff Peterson, Jim “Kimo” West, Teresa Bright, Bobby Ingano, and Kunia Galdeira.
* James "Kimo" West is a L.A.-based composer, guitarist and music producer. He is also well-known as long-time guitarist for the world's most successful musical satirist, "Weird Al" Yankovic and also as one of the world's top "slack key" guitarists. For over twenty-five years, he has composed music for features, network and cable TV, advertising, documentaries and web series. Completely self-taught, he learned orchestration "on the job" by re-scoring music for thirteen classic Fox films, entirely by ear. Scores for such films as "Journey to The Center of the Earth", "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The Sun Also Rises" were being released in foreign markets with new language tracks and, since many of the music elements were missing, Jim was hired to "re-score" the original music under dialog. His interest in "ki ho'alu" or Hawaiian slack key guitar began during his first visit to Hawaii, in the rural town of Hana, Maui. It was there he fell in love with the lilting sound of slack key. Evidently director Alexander Payne did as well, featuring slack key music for the score of the Oscar-winning film, "The Descendants". "Kimo" as he is known in Hawaii is recognized as one of the masters of slack key and has received many awards such as The Hawaii Music Award, The L.A. Treasures Award and is twice-nominated for the Na Hoku Hanohano Award (the Hawaiian "Grammy". He performs in slack key festivals and concerts and his slack key compositions grace five CD's, documentaries and national TV spots. His work with "Weird Al" has produced three Grammy's, many gold and platinum albums, international touring and TV appearances on The Tonight Show, The View, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and countless others.* Kala Koa Entertainment celebrates 12 years of bringing the biggest and brightest names in Hawaiian music to "the mainland" with the 2019 Southern California Slack Key Festival.

He's also drawn from his underrated solo career, where he paved the way for numerous others by mixing rock and country long before it was hip. Tonight, Papa Nes revisits his 1972 solo album, "And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’," accompanied by guitarist Pete Finney, who evokes parts originally played by late pedal-steel maestro Red Rhodes. "And the Hits..." is an unusual record with thoughtful ballads like "The Upside of Goodbye" and a homespun intimate version of the early Linda Ronstadt hit "Different Drum" delivered with little more than stripped-down guitars. * This album wraps-up the band's three-decade long legacy of ups and downs. That includes signing to Steve Wynn’s Down There Record Label (with the Dream Syndicate’s Dennis Duck on drums) which brought their critically-acclaimed debut album way back in 1987 -- geologic time in the indie music world. They go back so far that their 2nd album was released the same day as Nirvana’s "Nevermind." Then came a 25 year hiatus. That was followed by front man Bill See’s 2011 memoir "33 Days," and 2016’s "See Those Landing Lights" reunion.
* This album -- their final incendiary statement -- calls for love, redemption and being on the left side of history in Trump’s America, and it features the powerful final single, “Fight For Love.”
