Today is February 10, 2020, and it marks fifty years since the first broadcast of "FolkScene," the weekly Sunday evening radio show. Though founding hosts Howard and Roz Larman have both departed for the big folk festival of the beyond, their son Alan and his radio veteran wife Kat continue to uphold the tradition every Sunday evening at 6 pm (Pacific) for two hours on KPFK, 90.7 FM, in Los Angeles, simulcast on the web. Sometimes the show's central hour of performance-interview is from the archive, with Howard's voice heard again, and sometimes it's today's duo coaxing tales and tunes from recording artists about their latest tuneage. Congrats to all who have kept things vital and relevant.

The 25th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified today in 1967, just a year-and-a-half after its introduction. It clarifies that the vice president becomes president (as opposed to acting president) if the president dies, resigns, or is removed from office; and establishes how a VP vacancy is filled, and how the VP takes over to respond to a presidential disability.

Today in 1954 , President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned against US intervention in Vietnam. The release of the "Pentagon Papers" in the early '70s by whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg would alert Americans to the lies and subterfuge that caused massive US military involvement in Vietnam. That would make President Nixon and his cohorts so paranoid that they undertook illegal sabotage of their political opponents, culminating in Watergate.

Also today in 1940, the Soviet Union began mass deportations of Polish citizens from occupied eastern Poland to Siberia. It's well known that Nazi Germany invaded Poland on Sep. 1, 1939. But Allied propaganda in WW II erased the fact that Germany and the Soviets -- then allied in a treaty -- cooperatively invaded Poland from both sides, dividing the country and erasing its identity. It wasn't until after the Nazis surprise invasion of Russia that the Soviets became allies with Germany's enemies in the West.
Three years later, today in 1943, the Soviet Red Army engaged German troops and Spanish volunteers in the Battle of Krasny Bor, attempting to completely lift the brutal Nazi siege of the Russian city of Leningrad.

Black History Month
Today in 2020, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar talked about his new History Channel documentary series, "Black Patriots," premiering February 19th. Kareem's appearance on "CBS This Morning" included him telling the story of James Armistead Lafayette, the black spy for George Washington whose critical information allowed the Continental Army to trap the British army of Lord Cornwallis on a peninsula, where they had to surrender. That outcome caused Britain to give-up, and the rebelling colonies became the United States.
Today in 1989, Ron Brown was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee, making him the first African American to lead a major American political party.
Today in 2007, then Illinois senator Barack Obama announced his candidacy for president in the 2008 elections, which he went on to win, making him America's first president of color. He won reelection in 2012, and many believe his eight years in office re-energized racism and determined the outcome of the 2016 election.

Antarctica hit 65°F last week and it's snowing in New Hampshire
It's beyond, but driven by, what we do with our politics
Tomorrow, the people of New Hampshire brave the cold to cast the first votes on actual ballots of the 2020 presidential election. It's always a question how weather will effect turnout in any election, and a snowstorm can make things a crap shoot.
But if they were voting in Antarctica, they could go in shirtsleeves.
While that might seem a metaphor for all that's wrong with America's politics, it is yet another fact of global climate chaos, driven by climate change. We're addressing it because it needs to be at the top of the list for anyone who wants a stable future for themselves or their kids.

Greenwood says, "People’s Action members aren’t havin’ it. When Antarctica is hitting 65°F (which it did last week!), the time for middle-of-the-road gradualism is over. It’s time for action."
He continues, "Right now, on the ground in New Hampshire, our members at 'Rights and Democracy New Hampshire' are making sure no presidential candidate gets away with simple lip service on climate action. Their 'Keep It In the Ground' campaign -- run alongside 'New Hampshire Youth Movement' and '350 Action New Hampshire' -- is challenging problematic candidates in person to break their addiction to fossil fuels and fossil fuel political cash."
Together with working to get every candidate's feet to the fire, a consortium of organizations have made endorsements and are mobilizing to get voters to the polls tomorrow.
Greenwood tells us, "Standing apart from the pack on climate action is Bernie Sanders, who earned the endorsement of our [People’s Action] national network and 'Rights and Democracy New Hampshire.' Bernie got an A+ on RAD’s 'Keep It In The Ground' report card. He understands the urgency of the issue and will fight alongside us to break the influence of fossil fuel corporations."
Here at the Guide, we have likewise concluded that Senator Bernie Sanders is the best choice, not just to rebuild American credibility, trust, infrastructure, and society. We believe Bernie Sanders is the best choice for restoring America's leadership in the essential REVERSAL of global climate change.

Urban megacity and state battlegrounds
Of course, it isn't just presidential candidates who can make things go either way. Those in, or seeking, other elective offices (and appointive offices, like judges) are often pivitol.
During New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's "State of the City" address last week, he announced that NYC will BAN all new fossil fuel projects -- in a city that "is a trailblazer and one of the biggest economies in the world," as Dominique Thomas, Mid-Atlantic Regional Organizer of 350.org points-out.
Thomas continues, "New York City’s ban on fossil fuel projects is the largest municipal ban of its kind, ever. Our movement has fought to achieve this for years."
He adds that NYC "has been a strong trendsetter for climate policy for years. When New York City announced its intent to divest its massive pension from fossil fuels two years ago, it set off a wave of divestment declarations from around the US and the world, clocking in at over $14 trillion in commitments to date... it’s only a matter of time before more cities follow suit."
Meanwhile, in California, Governor Newsom is going into his second year in office, and Greenpeace has just evaluated his performance with a "climate report card."
Caroline Henderson, speaking for Greenpeace, says, "It’s no secret: the climate crisis is already here in California. Californians are feeling it — drought forces us to cut back on water usage, wildfires leave millions without power and homes, and those living near drilling sites experience negative impacts on their health and well-being. It is impossible to fight for a climate stable future in which warming is limited to 1.5°C while expanding oil and gas extraction. Governor Newsom campaigned on promises to leave our state with a strong climate legacy in the face of the Trump administration."
Greenpeace asserts, "Gov. Newsom has made some good first steps in his first year, but California is still one of the top oil producers in the country. Our elected officials can’t be climate leaders while allowing new fossil fuel extraction."

The battle of New Hampshire
New Hampshire may be small, but it's first. Corporate Big Media will talk incessantly about what happens in the primary there. So its importance as an influencer outsides its Liliputian geography.
Emily Johnson of another environmental organization called "Sunrise" -- "a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process" -- says, "Tomorrow’s primary election is so important that I left my job in Kentucky and traveled to New Hampshire to volunteer... sharing my county’s story and inspiring people to vote for the Green New Deal champion."
Sunrise has endorsed Bernie Sanders.
She continues, "Back home in Kentucky, coal miners have to fight black lung disease, and many are forced to travel over 100 miles for specialized care. Families have tried to escape the asthma-causing coal dust in the air by moving away, but end up unable to afford new homes in less-polluted areas. In 2000, over 300 million gallons of coal slurry spilled into local rivers, killing all aquatic life in the area. Despite efforts to clean up, some areas have tap water that is unsafe to drink even today."
Emily concludes, "I’ve been sharing my story with college students in New Hampshire because I want to be able to return home confident that my friends and neighbors will have a presidential nominee who cares about them and their healthcare, environment, and jobs. I have been so moved by the stories these students have shared in return about how a Green New Deal would change their lives, too. We are truly in this together."
That is the essential message. Not little New Hampshire instead of big California. But seeing the world as a planetary ecosystem in trouble.

Nothing else in our lifetimes will matter the way this does
Simply put: If we fail to immediately and effectively REVERSE climate change, then whatever other pursuits or issues excite our passions, all will be reduced to re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
There ARE encouraging signs. For the second year in a row, climate activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Environmental Defense Fund quickly said, "Greta Thunberg is an INSPIRATION. She has shown the world what it means to fight for our future and not back down to bullies."

Black History Month...
Civil War secret: Today in 1861, the US House of Representatives UNANIMOUSLY passed a resolution guaranteeing noninterference with slavery in any state. It was an effort to keep more states from seceding and joining the Southern Confederate States of America. (Had slave-state Maryland seceded, the US capital city, Washington, D.C., would have been surrounded by Confederate states; had Kentucky seceded, Union access along the Ohio River to reach the Mississippi River would have passed along a hostile shore. It would be awhile before the war was about freeing the slaves.)
Today in 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison outside Cape Town, South Africa, after enduring 27 years as a political prisoner. In memorium
JOSEPH SHABALA, longtime leader of LADYSMITH BLACK MOMBASA until his retirement in 2014, died last night.
The South African musical ensemble played Nelson Mandela's inauguration as their nation's first black president and was widely credited with breaking-down hatreds and barriers at the end of that nation's long era of apartheid (racial separation / white rule / no rights for its black citizens).
Shambala epitomized everything we know of the power of music to open hearts and bring change.

"It's the birthday of two men who were born on exactly the same day in 1809: Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln.
"Abraham Lincoln [(1809-1865)] was born on this day near Hodgenville, Kentucky (1809). Though he's generally considered one of the greatest presidents in our country's history, fairly little is known about his early life. Unlike most presidents, he never wrote any memoirs. We know that he was born in a log cabin and had barely a year of traditional schooling. His mother died when he was nine, and he spent much of his adolescence working with an ax. But when he was in his early 20s, he showed up in New Salem, Illinois, having decided to remake himself as a professional man, and to study law.

Previously, Spain had been conquered by the Moors, and they had forced conversion of all residents to Islam -- and would leave a lot of great architecture behind when they were run out of Spain. By the way, the voyages of Columbus were part of Spain reasserting its identity as a Catholic nation which, like the rest of Europe, was obedient to the Pope in Rome. * LISA FINNIE, a Pasadena native, is described by the LA Weekly as a “torch-hillbilly enchanteuse” with “hip-chick atmospherics” and a “sultry, languid approach." Her music digs deep into Americana soil as she explores themes of love and loss, and always with a groove.
* A fixture on the local roots music scene for the past two decades, the singer-songwriter-song stylist is equally at home in a honky-tonk, a cocktail lounge or a literary salon.
* Joining Finnie are her three main men, the stunningly versatile, guitarist-in-demand, Dylan Thomas (King Cotton, The Dickies, 45 Grave); bassist/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, Tim Fleming (Sofia Talvik, Brad Colerick, Little Silver Hearts); and her longtime collaborator, percussion maestro/harmonica slinger, John Palmer (Johnny Rivers, Wanda Jackson, Ronnie Dawson).
* LISA FINNIE also produces and hosts “The Dylan Hours”, a specialty radio program devoted to the music of Bob Dylan, at 88.5 FM/KCSN.
* THE BEECHWOOD BELLES are the new close-harmony duo of CYNTHIA BRANDO and CAIT LEOW who are each known on the Los Angeles singer-songwriter circuit as solo artists.
* Cynthia and Cait met at the long running Los Angeles venue, “Kulak’s Woodshed,” uniting over their love of early 20th century jazz and blues and '60s folk music. They fuse these influences into popular cover songs of those times, newer and more recent covers, and original tunes in their “vintage vamp” style.
* CYNTHIA BRANDO’s vocal style has been described by the Pasadena Weekly as, “equal parts Silk and Stevie Nicks.” She performs all over the Los Angeles area and beyond, sharing her unique “vintage vibe” powerful vocals and steady acoustic folk-rock rhythms in clubs, homes and as a street performer. She has played notable shows at House of Blues in Hollywood and music festivals, and has completed her second tour across the country with her 2018 album, “The Treehouse Trio Sessions,” which Music Connection Magazine included in their “Top 20 Prospects of 2018” list.
* CAIT LEOW hails from Ohio and has made a splash on the Los Angeles music scene with her original music and many favorite cover tunes -- influenced by her strong background in musical theatre, folk, oldies and jazz. She lends her voice and ukulele and violin skills to various projects and tours the country with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus in their outreach program, “It Gets Better” tour. * This is "A gorgeous mile of fruit and flower garland wallpaper in a gradient of saturated hues containing within its two story installation multiple scenarios and vignettes of photography and ceramic, faux Grecian luxury statues, gilded mirrors, chaises and sundry objects. All of this exists in the mode of a secular temple to beauty, as well as a sort of public living room where communities are formed through the universal language of shareable fruit."
