Quickie editorial about weighty times...
There are 23 Senate Republicans up for reelection in 2020.
Let's take the fight to every single one. Only Mitt Romney of Utah had the integrity to defy the threats of his party and vote to find the Orange ogre -- who is so blatantly guilty of the crimes that were clearly proven in the case brought by the House of Representatives Impeachment Managers.
So, now, we are left with a dangerous precedent that will surely wreak havoc on American democracy in ways we cannot begin to imagine. That is this:
A trial without witnesses and documents is a cover-up. PERIOD.
Senate Republicans had the chance to do the right thing, but all of them -- except Romney -- chose party loyalty over patriotism.
That crowd of Trump butt-kissers all deserve to be VOTED OUT.
Not that we are enamored with all Democratic Party candidates or office-holders. We are not, because too damn many of THEM are in bed with the corporatists and big money interests. But today's Republican Party is indisputably corrupt because it chooses to have no integrity, it chooses to allow to languish -- on Mitch McConnell's morgue of a desk, without any action whatsoever -- over 400 pieces of legislation passed by the House of Representatives, and it chooses to protect and embrace a vindictive, self-serving, Trumpertantrum-throwing, spoiled child of a man who has publicly lied over 16,000 times since taking office just over three years ago.
The nonpartisan "Common Cause" wrote today, "With a blank check from the Senate's sham impeachment trial in hand, Donald Trump is out for revenge. He's starting to lash out against those who put their loyalty to the country ahead of their loyalty to him."
They continue, with a shocking specific: "[The latest target is] Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the top Ukraine expert who was on the fated July 25th phone call where Trump tried to extort an investigation into the Bidens from Ukrainian President Zelensky. Vindman later testified before the House about what he heard on the call."
"Today, Lt. Col. Vindman was pushed out of his role at the National Security Council -- and escorted from the White House."
Common Cause concludes, "Vindman did this country a great service. He felt, in his words, a 'sense of duty' to tell the American people the truth -- and now, that honorable act has cost him his job, his career, and his privacy."
Obviously, Lt. Col. Vindman deserves better, as will others who are targeted in the witch hunt that Trump has finally found -- by being its perpetrator. But what about the big picture? What about the rest of us?
Do we deserve better? Only if we are willing to speak truth to power, stand up to corruption and injustice, put protection of the weak and voiceless, and protection of the planet, over profits and payola, over funneling public resources into private hands, and over making stock dividends more important than serving the people's needs. Only if we are committed to getting to work, and fighting for what's better.
That is the task before us -- each of us, and all of us.
Ask questions. Never accept partisan or corporate "talking points." Beware of who is behind what you see on social media. Never be content with pat answers from self-serving interests who always put profit before people. Stir things up and see what's at the bottom of the pot. Be a burr under the saddle of somebody who rides too high and mighty. Put yourself out -- while you still can.
Or accept the judgement of a future that will be baffled by all that was lost in our time.

He was one hundred and three years old. What a run. The guy who ended the Hollywood "Black List" of the McCarthy Era. The guy who ended the veritable slavery of the Hollywood "Studio System." Oh-so-many accomplishments, on screen and off.
We'll always remember seeing him on the late night talk shows after his stroke. It was brave of him AND of the hosts and producers to go on-air in a format that is taped real-time and isn't edited. He made you forget that he struggled to speak and be understood. His confidence and his sheer joy at being there to share with an audience was transcendent. Such a joie de vivre.
He had written a book, and it seemed that making the tv rounds to promote it -- the usual promo thing -- would just follow the pattern.
But of course it couldn't be, given the effects of his stroke.
Who could have expected how compelling, how uplifting, he would be in those essentially live tv interviews, nakedly displaying the heart and soul of the macho strong man as he faced and adapted to his sudden disabilities?
As memorable as his big screen roles had been, those last roles on the small screen really stay with you. Yep, what a run.
