Acoustic Americana Music Guide July 17 through 20, 2009

.
Weekend update edition!
.
It’s July. It’s hot. The movies cost too much. TV is boring. We landed on the moon 40 years ago Monday, and we haven’t been anywhere since. But there’s an incredible amount of live acoustic music being performed all-l-l-l over town. Some shows are free. Many that require a cover charge or tickets help you balance that with free parking, so you can enjoy live music for less money than the cost of abandoning your car in a downtown L.A. parking lot for a day. And you thought you were going to sit home and fan yourself with a palm frond. Succumb to wanderlust and your need for art. It’s all waiting for you in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide.

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Fri, Jul 17; in Palmdale:
7 pm EMITH plays the Desert Song Productions “FEATURED ARTIST / OPEN MIC” at Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530; www.butlerscoffee.com/music.html. EMITH, or as they prefer with all lower-case, emith, is singer-songwriter CAROL ANN IVES and veteran guitarist STEVIE GURR (Dr. John, Elvin Bishop, and others). The duo has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and earned a “Listener Favorite” with their song, “San Bernardino.” Founded in 2003 “at the crossroads between Los Angeles and the infamous Inland Empire,” emith ("truth and the good life" - pronounced "EH-myth") is a musical creation with elements of the old and new, of humor and sadness, of the pristine and the profane. The band plays both as an acoustic duo featuring songwriter Carol on vocals and guitar and highly respected guitarist Stevie Gurr on guitar, bass and harmonica, and they sometimes assemble a full band supplemented by various local favorites on bass and drums. emith's style of music features melodic, haunting influences from rock, folk, country, blues, and Celtic genres. emith is currently touring in support of their debut, the full-length, well-produced studio release "13 Seasons" (Burnside Distribution, Mar 17, 2009). That CD was a long time in the making, and listeners to radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” will recall the world premieres of the earliest versions of their songs, including “San Bernardino,” which became a TttT “Listener Favorite.” The press has described them as having elements of Fleetwood Mac, Aimie Mann, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Fairport Convention, and Lucinda Williams. Carol is a newcomer but sounds like a veteran, with a gloomy vocal style reminiscent of Aimee Mann. emith features music that is ethereal but rootsy, lyrically compelling, and full of humor, passion and a wry sex appeal. The band brings a modern energy to melodies that sound as if they were written centuries ago. Accessible by both youthful and mature audiences, emith has catchy songs and an in-the-flesh impression that is hard to forget. More at www.emith.com.

8-10 pm GREG POREE & FRIENDS at Kulak's Woodshed, 5230-1/2 Laurel Canyon Bl, North Hollywood; 818-766-9913; info / web simulcast at www.kulakswoodshed.com - named for “Best Web Simulcast” in “The Best of 2008 / Top Ten” in FolkWorks, at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35788/166.
+
Greg Poree began his career in Los Angeles in the mid 60's playing and teaching guitar. The 60's were an exciting time for music and Greg was active in the LA music scene while getting his formal training at Cal Arts. His first major break came in early 1969 when he became musical director for Sonny & Cher on the recommendation of the great alto sax player Harold Batiste. During that time Greg was also actively writing with his sister Anita Porée & best friend Jerry Peters for the hit RCA group Friends Of Distinction. In 1970 Greg took an offer from Motown to become musical director for Gladys Knight and the Pips. This began a long association with Motown and over the next few years Greg was musical director and guitarist with such acts as Diana Ross, The Supremes, Thelma Houston, and Syreeta Wright. Greg also played on numerous Motown recording sessions with Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, and The Jackson 5. Other artists Greg traveled with during the 70's included Paul Anka, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin and Isaac Hayes., but with the birth of his sons Emile and Justin, Greg no longer wanted the road life.
+
He channeled his skills into becoming a top LA studio guitarist working with an amazing range of musical talent such as Donald Byrd, Randy Crawford, The 5th Dimension, Benny Golson, Aretha Franklin, Ahmad Jamal, Syl Johnson, James Brown, Al Green, Albert King, Teena Marie, Phoebe Snow, Dusty Springfield, The Originals, Donny Osmond, Edwin Starr, Stanley Turrentine, Lenny Williams and Joan Baez.
+
Greg's activities since the millennium include teaching at the prestigious Henry Mancini Institute, arranging for the National Symphony Orchestra and NAACP Image Awards, and producing the CD's Three AM and Brand New Morning for an amazing new singer/songwriter and Lakeshore recording artist Gretchen Lieberum.
+
The night's music will be all original compositions that are melody and groove driven; the vibe improvisational world jazz. Performing with Greg are Paul Cartwright (violin), Keith Jones (bass) and David Leach (percussion). More at www.myspace.com/gregporee and www.poreemusic.com.
+
All artists donate their performances; venue is supported by donations, and asks $10 per attendee in lieu of a cover charge.

Joey has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” with the late, great band CIUNAS. He is a multiple-award winning musician, and he tells us, “I am putting on a concert to raise money to go to Ireland. In the genre of music I play there are competitions for musicians. On one of my last trips to the Midwest, East Coast, and Canada, I entered one of these, and to my great surprise, I won. Those were only the semi-finals. The World Championships are in Ireland and you have to pay your own way to get there. Once again, I need to ask all of my friends for their support. I only have one thing to give in return, my music. I have asked my friends, the best players in Los Angeles, to donate their time to perform with me and put on a concert to raise enough money to get me to Ireland to compete. This evening of the traditional music, dancing, and songs of Ireland will be a great night of entertainment and is surely not to be missed.” Event includes a 50/50 raffle. Tix $15 at the door.

+
They have performed with numerous symphony orchestras across the country, to great acclaim. The Riders, with mandolin phenom EVAN MARSHALL (aka “Relaxin' Jackson”), are not simply included in FolkWorks magazine’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” feature, they are picked as THE best in the “Top Ten Live Acoustic Bands in L.A. in 2008: #1 - Riders of the Purple Sage. That notation reads, “They’re amazing and transcend their genre, as they prove when they perform with symphony orchestras. Endorsed by the widow of band founder Foy Willing, and with mandolin wizard Evan Marshall now solidly a member, they are the best acoustic band in L.A., period.” In addition, Evan Marshall is named in that same FolkWorks feature among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” live instrumentalists in L.A.
+
The Riders of the Purple Sage have enjoyed L.A.’s most successful monthly residency, routinely selling-out six weeks in advance. They are one of, if not "the" most historical Western band in the world, having starred in films and radio from pre-war days to the present. Today's Riders, under the leadership of CODY BRYANT, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are instrumental virtuosos, including five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, twin fiddles, steel guitar, upright bass, drums/percussion, steel guitar, and consummate vocals. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound and enjoying the endorsement of SHARON WILLING, widow of band founder FOY WILLING and author of the book, “No One to Cry To,” the band continues to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages.
+
Larry Wines wrote of one performance that they were “ethereal” and “orchestral,” and indeed, they often perform with symphony orchestras. Larry added in that review, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.” Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.”

Sat, Jul 18; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm GONZALO BERAGA QUARTET at Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City; www.boulevardmusic.com; 310-398-2583. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Gonzalo is considered one of the best guitar players in America. You will hear a mix of Gypsy Jazz and Latin acoustic music with most memorable melodies. The quartet brings passionate, virtuoso guitar, plus incredible clarinet player Rob Hardt and a fine rhythm section.
+
After touring the world extensively with the John Jorgenson Quintet, native Argentinean Gonzalo Bergara is presenting his new CD “Porteña Soledad” with glowing reviews all over the world, including Editor’s Pick in Guitar Player magazine. Meanwhile, Vintage Guitar magazine called it “a masterpiece.”
+
Gonzalo began playing professionally at age 16 in Buenos Aires. By 17 he was already fronting his own blues trio on national TV in his homeland. He arrived in America in 2000, and has performed and recorded with hundreds of artists including Tim Hausser from Manhattan Transfer, Sylvie Vartan, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, John Jorgenson, Howard Alden and more.
+
The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet is Gonzalo on lead acoustic guitar, Jeffrey Radaich on rhythm guitar, Rob Hardt on clarinet and tenor saxophone, and David Tranchina on upright bass. The music is heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France, a plethora of traditional jazz styles, and a hint of his native Buenos Aires.
+
"Gonzalo Bergara’s music exists in a way that very little music does. He has lavished such care on every phrase, built each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous, the music becomes sculpture. It has weight, density, gravity. This is serious. And deeply moving." Gonzalo has performed all over the world including Croatia, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Argentina, Brazil, England, Scotland and all the major US. festivals, including The Montreal Jazz Fest, Playboy Jazz Fest, Sweet and Hot Jazz Fest, Django Reinhardt Fest in Germany, Suev Guitar Fest in Italy, Merle Fest, Strawberry Fest, the various Django Fests in the US, and lots more.

Reservations get directions at 818-707-2179 or houseconcerts@jrp-graphics.com. Series info, www.houseconcerts.us and www.myspace.com/russjuliehouseconcerts
+
Both EMITH and ERIC SCHWARTZ have been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” You are cautioned that Eric’s material is adults-only.
+
ERIC SCHWARTZ has been on the road since 1998 playing festivals that include Kerrville, Philly Folk, Falcon Ridge, Oregon Country Fair, South Florida Folk, and more, and a wide assortment of premier venues including The Bottom Line, The Ark, The Birchmere, The Tin Angel, and Club Passim, plus the gigs that keep the singer-songwriter fed, like house concerts, coffeehouses, colleges, and more. He composed the score for a musical adaptation of Beowulf presented as a workshop in NYC starring Andre DeShields and Billy Porter. Dr. Demento plays his songs now and then ("Charliesomething" was #2 for the year a couple of years back.) 'Napster Rap' was featured on NPR's All Things Considered. A biology degree and experience as a touring bilingual actor have furnished Eric Schwartz with a deftly analytical mind, an awesome imagination, and a soul that thrives in the spotlight. He honed his performance skills with five years in the Greenwich Village bar scene. Eric is a brilliant writer and his songs have often had us on the floor with laughter.
+
PLEASE NOTE: This show is RATED "R." No one under 18 will be admitted. Eric's material often uses colorful language as well as political and sexual content, so if you are easily offended by such material, this is not the show for you. Here's a link to one of Eric Schwartz's music videos - www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAVI16FSjxU&fmt=18 (warning, this video combines colorful language, politics and sexual content. Meanwhile, the song won 1st Place in the International Songwriting Competition, Comedy/Novelty category, in 2008.)
+

EMITH ("the good life") combines the old and new, humor and sadness, the pristine and the irreverent. They play both as an acoustic duo, featuring new songwriter Carol Ann Ives on vocals and guitar, and highly respected guitarist Stevie Gurr (Dr. John, Elvin Bishop, and others) on guitar, bass and harmonica, and also as a full band supplemented by various local favorites on bass and drums.

EMITH's style of music features melodic, haunting influences from rock, folk, country, blues, and Celtic genres, ethereal but rootsy, lyrically compelling but catchy, and full of humor, passion and a wry sex appeal. They bring a modern energy to melodies that sound as if they were written centuries ago. Judith Salkin wrote in the Desert Post Weekly that emith has, "...a sound that mixes the real clarity of Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins with the intricate lyrics of early Fleetwood Mac or Fairport Convention..."

EMITH's latest (really fun) music video, “High Sierra,” is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rcinm6JD_0&fmt=18.

Sun, Jul 19; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm AUDREY AULD with TOM CORBETT, plus TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS, in a double-act show at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
This is a wonderful double-bill. Award-winning Aussie expatriate AUDREY AULD, longtime L.A. roots fave TOM CORBETT, and “new-folk” trio TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS and have all performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and delighted listeners as they do audiences everywhere. All enjoy global airplay, and many of Tracy’s original songs debuted on “TttT.”
+
“AUDRY AULD’s songwriting is honest, passionate and accessible. She's one of the hardest workers I know. She has the most heartfelt contagious laugh I have ever witnessed and just thinking of her makes me smile. Having her near you will improve your day. She's a friend of mine, I love her dearly...give her a listen." ~ award-winning singer-songwriter MARY GAUTHIER.
+
Devils are not the only thing to come from Tasmania. Audrey Auld's heart is in acoustic roots music and her presence is as big as the Outback. Audrey's songs are the wry observations of the “Tassie” girl living in California and Nashville for the past 5 years. She tells tongue-in-cheek tales that shed clear Australian light on familiar icons. She describes her sound as "music with the dirt left on."
+
"Audrey Auld is a great singer songwriter. She holds a unique place in contemporary Americana/Roots music. I believe that this uniqueness is largely due to the fact that she is Australian. This affords her a totally different attitude as an artist than traditional American contributors to this genre. Audrey is one of the most honest original artists I know." ~ Fred Eaglesmith.
+
TOM CORBETT accompanies Audrey tonight on mandolin and guitar. Who else could brag they taught Tom Selleck how to play mandolin for a role in a play, but Tom Corbett? Popular in L.A.’s acoustic music scene, whether onstage or in the studio, Tom has worked with a long list of acclaimed musicians, including the Acousticats, Mike Ness, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band multi-instrumentalist John McEuen’s entertaining String Wizards band, plus he joined McEuen, Jimmy Ibbotson, singer Jennifer Warnes and Laurie Lewis in the award-winning 2002 DVD “Nitty Gritty Surround.” More recently he has toured with Robin and Linda Williams (Prairie Home Companion).
+
Plus, TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS. Who else has an Emmy and a Peabody and writes and performs acoustic songs with humor and ironic twists and turns? Tracy Newman epitomizes the essence of the creative spirit, adapting herself to various forms of media throughout her career. And she has found success in almost every aspect of the creative arts.
+
Tracy has worked on many of the seminal TV shows of our time, including Cheers, The Nanny, and Ellen (for which she won an Emmy and the Peabody Award for co-writing the "coming out" episode). Tracy is the co-creator and executive producer of the ABC hit comedy According to Jim, which just finished its 8th and final season of production.
+
Tracy was a founding member and director of The Groundlings, LA's premier improvisational comedy troupe that spawned the likes of Phil Hartman, Lisa Kudrow, Will Ferrell, and Laraine Newman, who also happens to be Tracy's sister. And as a remarkably gifted songwriter, Tracy is held in very high esteem by other songwriters in the community for her sharp wit and her understated, captivating performing style. Her songs harken back in some ways to a different time, with cheery 6th chords, and ‘40s-style harmonies. Through the stories and themes of her songs, Tracy gives the audience a glimpse into a simpler, brighter world (not necessarily her own). The songs are thought-provoking and highly original, yet leave you with a warm, happy feeling. She'll be joined onstage Sunday night by The Reinforcements, Gene Lippmann and Lori Doswell on guitar and backup vocals, plus a few other gifted band members. Her debut CD, “A Place in the Sun,” continues to enjoy wonderful critical acclaim and global airplay, following it’s debut on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Tracy and her Reinforcements are now working on her next CD, so expect plenty of new songs. More at www.tracynewman.com. Tickets: $15.

MONDAY, JULY 20
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
A special note about an anniversary, this day, July 20…
+
Forty years ago today, a plaque was read on TV, to the world, in a broadcast that came from another world. Neil Armstrong read, “Here, man from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon. We came in peace for all mankind.”
+
Despite the fact that the nation whose flag was emblazoned on that plaque was embroiled in a war, the moment was one of the all-time greatest human achievements.
+
The 36-story-tall Saturn V rocket that got them there was designed and built with manually-operated (no batteries) slide rules, and with no desktop or laptop computers. The navigation across a quarter-million miles of space (and back) was handled by people, aided by a computer with less power than an average cellular phone.
+
And yet, for all our technological achievements since that day, we have yet to apply any of it to return there since the Apollo program ended in 1972, or to go to Mars, or to do much of anything beyond our narcissistic preoccupations with applying technology to silly games and stuffing hundreds of songs into tiny playback devices (where they are compressed-to-sounding-like-crap), and to conversing while driving - to others who are not in the same car.
+
How is it that we found the money to bail-out irresponsible banks and corporations that are “too big to fail,” yet we cannot find a fraction of what we spent on them to give us a future like Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001 - A Space Odyssey” or Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” -? Whatever happened to the future?

+
They are splendid, the best, and they have performed with numerous symphony orchestras across the country to great acclaim.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take the dozens of electric Americana shows into account!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
