Shine on walked on moon edition…
.
The important anniversary today of the Apollo 11 moon landing is one that makes us wonder where our future went (other than into stupid wars and the military-industrial complex and oil depletion allowance subsidies and bailing-out thieving Wall Street money manipulators and assorted other fat cats that rip us off and fight to keep Republicans and Dixiecrats from letting us have real health care reform.)
.
All that deserves serious attention. And focused action. But not to the point of getting depressed. We wouyld never advocate all work and no play.
.
There is SOOOOOOOO much live acoustic music being performed out there, and the variety of tasty offerings is vast and almost incomprehensibly abundant! Of course, that’s where we come-in, to unscrew the inscrutable: think of us as the one who opens that stuck jar of preserves that Granny sent you. No one needs to settle for the silliness or droning blah-blah-blah of TV.

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

.
A special note about an anniversary, this day, July 20…
+
Forty years ago today, a plaque was read on TV, to the world, in a broadcast that came from another world. Neil Armstrong read, “Here, man from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon. We came in peace for all mankind.”
+
Despite the fact that the nation whose flag was emblazoned on that plaque was embroiled in a war, the moment was one of the all-time greatest human achievements.
+
The 36-story-tall Saturn V rocket that got them there was designed and built with manually-operated (no batteries) slide rules, and with no desktop or laptop computers. The navigation across a quarter-million miles of space (and back) was handled by people, aided by a computer with less power than an average cellular phone.
+
And yet, for all our technological achievements since that day, we have yet to apply any of it to return there since the Apollo program ended in 1972, or to go to Mars, or to do much of anything beyond our narcissistic preoccupations with applying technology to silly games and stuffing hundreds of songs into tiny playback devices (where they are compressed-to-sounding-like-crap), and to conversing while driving - to others who are not in the same car.
+
How is it that we found the money to bail-out irresponsible banks and corporations that are “too big to fail,” yet we cannot find a fraction of what we spent on them to give us a future like Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001 - A Space Odyssey” or Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” -? Whatever happened to the future?

8 pm RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.

They are splendid, the best, and they have performed with numerous symphony orchestras across the country to great acclaim. The Riders, with mandolin phenom EVAN MARSHALL (aka “Relaxin' Jackson”), are not simply included in FolkWorks magazine’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” feature, they are picked as THE best in the “Top Ten Live Acoustic Bands in L.A. in 2008: #1 - Riders of the Purple Sage. That notation reads, “They’re amazing and transcend their genre, as they prove when they perform with symphony orchestras. Endorsed by the widow of band founder Foy Willing, and with mandolin wizard Evan Marshall now solidly a member, they are the best acoustic band in L.A., period.” In addition, Evan Marshall is named in that same FolkWorks feature among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” live instrumentalists in L.A.
+
The Riders of the Purple Sage have enjoyed L.A.’s most successful monthly residency, routinely selling-out six weeks in advance. They are one of, if not "the" most historical Western band in the world, having starred in films and radio from pre-war days to the present. Today's Riders, under the leadership of CODY BRYANT, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are instrumental virtuosos, including five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, twin fiddles, steel guitar, upright bass, drums/percussion, steel guitar, and consummate vocals. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound and enjoying the endorsement of SHARON WILLING, widow of band founder FOY WILLING and author of the book, “No One to Cry To,” the band continues to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages.
+
Larry Wines wrote of one performance that they were “ethereal” and “orchestral,” and indeed, they often perform with symphony orchestras. Larry added in that review, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.” Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.”

7:30 pm “SATURDAY NIGHT REBEL ROCKERS TRAVELING CIRCUS & MEDICINE SHOW” with COUNTING CROWS with special guests MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD and AUGANA, at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Ave in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; http://greektheatrela.com. If you’re surprised to see a listing for this show here, it is one we include for those who already know what they’re getting into, and that they like it. The promo is clever: “Debilitude, insomnia and lowness of spirits got you down? We’ve got the cure for all of your woes! The Saturday Night Rebel Rockers Traveling Circus and Medicine Show featuring the Counting Crows plus special guests Michael Franti and Spearhead and Augana…Come grab a musical elixer and enjoy a night under the Big Top! Each band will serve a full set of musical enchantment while also treating audiences to collaborative numbers throughout the evening.”
+
Counting Crows’ success dates back to their 1993 debut release “August and Everything After” and the hit single "Mr. Jones." Since then they’ve gone on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide, chart eight top 5 singles, and four records have broke the Top 5 on Billboard’s Hot 200. In 2004, the band released their first ever "best of" set, Films about Ghosts, which featured songs from every phase of the Counting Crows’ recording career and, in 2006, a live record was released titled New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall 2003. Their most recent record, the double album Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings was released to critical and popular acclaim in Mar 2008.
+
Peace and social justice activist and support artists Michael Franti and Spearhead will bring their blend of hip-hop and a variety of other styles including funk, reggae, jazz, folk, and rock to the Greek. The group's newest album “All Rebel Rockers” (2008) entered the Billboard 200 pop chart in Sep at number 38. Recently Michael Franti performed at the 2009 Green Inaugural Ball, chaired by Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, to support the Obama Administration’s promise of producing a Green Economy in America.
+
Augana’s first release “All the Stars and Boulevards” (2005) reached #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and birthed the hit single “Boston.” Their follow up album, “Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt,” was released in 2008. It’s a chance to get a dose of a different brand of musical remedy as the Counting Crows’ Saturday Night Rebel Rockers Traveling Circus and Medicine Show comes to the Greek. Tix, $79.50 / $65 / $45.

The Venice SongFest brings together leading singer-songwriters from Southern California and touring performers from around the country for a two-hour virtuoso musical experience. This month’s performers are Red Parlor Records recording star and 2008 “L.A. Music Awards” winner MANDA MOSHER (recently seen performing on the CBS network “Late Late Show” with Craig Ferguson); pianist and vocalist ALISSA MORENO (her music has been featured in many productions, including MTV’s “The Hills,” and CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother;” and she penned the Rascal Flats hit, “Every Day”); acoustic-electric fingerstyle guitar wizard SCOTT GOLDMAN (his latest CD is titled “Off Season”); and acoustic pop-rocker JOHN STOWERS (winner of a 2004 “Billboard World Song Contest” award for “Jimmy’s Song”).
+
MANDA MOSHER is a true rising star. Tracks from her debut CD, “Everything You Need,” are getting global airplay, after debuting on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Manda tells us, “In radio news, the prestigious ‘Acoustic Café’ (syndicated on 80 stations across the U.S.) by Rob Reinhart picked up my cover of Pete Townshend’s ‘Blue, Red, and Grey’ to feature on this week’s show – visit www.acafe.com to see the playlists and stations in your area. Nice playlist! In other news, I’ve been added as a headliner to Oklahoma’s DFEST in late Jul (www.dfest.com) with the likes of The Black Crowes, Ozomatli, Rooney and Ian Moore. If you’re going or have friends there, let me know. And I am pleased to announce an upcoming tour with DAN REED from The DAN REED NETWORK. We’re doing 4 shows with him starting in Los Angeles at Hotel Café, then to San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle.” More at www.mandamosher.com and www.myspace.com/scottgoldmanmusic.

+

Read on. Splendid pianist and film music composer Marc Bosserman tells us, “I've been playing the Varnish every Tuesday night. It's this sort of secret, out of the way cool space. Really like the vibe. Takes me back to the speak-easy days of yore! Actually, [it’s part of] Cole's, which is this 100 year old deli downtown on 6th Street. The door is the one on the right and all it has is this tiny sign that tells you that you are in the Varnish! Inside, it’s totally a speak easy and I'm playing all music from the ‘50s back. Wed, Jul 22:
7 pm “STRINGS OF COMEDY” at the M Bar, 1253 Vine St (at Fountain), Hollywood 90038; 323-856-0036. It’s musical comedian CHRIS VALENTI’s monthly showcase of musical comedians. Chris says, “Don't miss this one. We've got a big time headliner toping off a great show that includes therapy, speed dating, urologists, and commercials. No, this is not American Idol without Paula, this is the Strings of Comedy - where the real idols, ...well, at least the real Americans (...besides Sven) entertain the hell out of you! Videos from each of the performers can be seen at www.StringsOfComedy.com.”
+
Lineup, as described by Chris, is:
“Eric Schwartz aka Smooth-E (www.SmoothEtv.ning.com) One of the nation's hottest rising stand-up headliners, Eric Schwartz aka Smooth-E and his music have appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," BET's "Comic View," Showtime's "White Boyz in the Hood," Mun2, SiTV and more. As dusk sets on the suburban corporate park, a lyrical fire glows from a pocket-protected heart. Mild ManNerd Eric Schwartz morphs from middle management to M.C., delivering his message with lyrical force. If you see him holding a microphone, he's not there to fix it; he's there to rip it. He is Smooth-E.
+
“Tyrants in Therapy (www.TyrantsInTherapy.com) A cross between The Eurythmics and Mel Brooks, or maybe a New Yorker cartoon set to music. Which in itself is pretty strange since the Tyrants have always been based in L.A. Drenched in sophistication, dripping with acerbic wit, tumble dried in absurdity, the TIT live show is a kaleidoscope of social commentary, dance beats, a lick of kick-ass country, a healthy dollop of New Wave, and a decadent dose of Cabaret. It's a one-of a-kind performance so mind-bending you'll forget how to get home.
+
“Kelly Meyersfield (www.KellyMeyersfield.com) Born on Long Island to a urologist, Kelly was surrounded by dick talk from the very beginning. Her sweet little face gives nothing away but her music tells us all that she is one of the funniest and most perverse gals around.
+
“Sven Amsterdam (myspace.com/lacomedian) A comedian who likes hot babes and domestic beer. Plays electric guitar and sings very funny songs about speed dating.”
+
Chris Valenti crafts songs, films, and jokes about foiled romantic opportunities, neurotic misadventures, and the painfully relatable universal suffering we all endure. His live show is part music, part comedy, part cinema, and he claims, “when possible, part striptease.” A hopeful romantic with a twisted sense of humor, Chris uses blunt honesty, vulnerability, and self-deprecation to write comedy about the frustrations of life and attempted relationships. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Both of these acts are sterling. How can I drag you in to see this show? So great last time in. Two pros working the stage. Great. Both great wits. Funny stuff and fabulous songs. Greatness at work.If you missed these two amazing singer songwriters in May you missed something truly incredible. One fan in the sold-out crowd was overheard saying ‘It's like Bessie Smith meets Leonard Cohen.’ Now they're coming back and I recommend you make your reservations early.”
+
Your editor was there in May and heartily concurs.
+
BILL BURNETT isn’t just know for his work with his band, The Backboners. Bill Burnett's songs have been performed by Bette Midler (who called on Bill to craft an opening number for her new Vegas act), Patti Lupone, Tim Curry, Dean Stevens, Pebbles Flintstone, Bamm Bamm Rubble, and Casper the Friendly Ghost, and others, both human and animated. He's a songwriting treasure. Bob Stane says, “Bill Burnett is one of the finest song writers to grace our stage. He's a world-class songwriter with amazing wit and outlook.”
+
TERESA TUDURY takes you on a musical journey of wild and powerful songs and stories from the depths of her incredibly rich and inspiring repertoire. Bob Stane says, “Teresa Tudury is an absolute original. From her San Francisco roots to the Greek Islands to New York and LA, she wakes up the music scene. Teresa creates a loyal following and rave reviews wherever she performs. Our world is richer with such a rare talent in our midst.” Tix, $18.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take the dozens of electric Americana shows into account!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
