It’s JULY!
.
Our seventh month was originally the fifth month on the Roman calendar. It was called “Quintilis” meaning “fifth,” and it had 36 days. Romulus reduced the number to 31 days, Numa Pompilius cut it to 30, and Julius Caesar restored it to 31 days. Marc Anthony paid tribute to Julius Caesar by naming the month after (hence, July) since Caesar’s birthday was the 14th. Of Quintilis. Er, July. It officially became July in 44 BC, right after Caesar was stabbed and killed by Brutus and a large group of Roman Senators.

Here’s to July,
Here’s to July,
For the bird,
And the bee,
And the butterfly;
For the flowers
That blossom
For feasting the eye;
For skates, balls,
And jump ropes,
For swings that go high;
For rocketry
Fireworks that
Blaze in the sky,
Oh, here’s to July,
Here’s to July.

In history, the Battle of Gettysburg ended today, July 3rd, in 1863. The South’s dream of having an Independence Day for the Confederacy on the same July 4th as the birthday of the US was thwarted there in Gettysburg when the disastrous Pickett’s Charge failed on July 3rd, and when Vicksburg, the Confederacy’s “Gibraltar of the Mississippi River,” finally fell to Union forces on July 4th. So much death. Only in recent years has the traditional Americana Fourth of July been celebrated in Mississippi.
+
Lots to digest before you overindulge in BBQ, beer, and fireworks to celebrate America’s Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, when a long struggle lay ahead for rebelling colonists to make their declared independence a reality.

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! WHERE TO FIND WHAT WE DO…
+
WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM where the format allows us to present the massive content of the Guide in easy-to-index published form. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes size limitations (yep, size matters). We began publishing on Blogspot in early 2008.
+
WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION as a new presence, and enjoying that site. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks
+
WE’RE IN FOLKWORKS with the latest edition of the “Somewhere Out There” column, available online at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35941/3176. (We have received MANY compiled pages of feedback about the current column, so feel free to send us yours!) We contribute occasional reviews or feature stories to FolkWorks. You can read the work of many good writers there, and you can sign-up for a free FolkWorks e-newsletter, too, all at www.FolkWorks.org
+
Our MYSPACE PAGE has news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show. After a long presence on MySpace with the Guide’s predecessor publication, we had to move on, because that site now accepts only short posts. But it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008. (We don’t update the Myspace site very often, or even check its esoteric, myspace-only email. So please DON’T email us through that site. Myspace “friends” are welcome!) You can find what we have there at www.myspace.com/laacoustic
+
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+
PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

SPECIAL SECTION:
.
FILM REVIEW: Opened mid-June in L.A., playing citywide at Laemmle Theatres:
.
Film; ongoing; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
“IRENE IN TIME,” the new HENRY JAGLOM film, prominently features, on-camera, original music and song performances by multi-platinum songwriter HARRIET SCHOCK and her band, with some on camera vocals by the film’s star, TANNA FREDERICK. It opens today in L.A., citywide, at the Laemmle Theatres. Your editor has seen the film, and concurs with film critics that it is wonderful (see review, below). It opens in NYC on September 23.
+
Here are the early reviews of “Irene In Time:”
+
Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide: “This film explores the relationship between a young adult daughter and her departed father. Often charming, it is a tale with broad overtones and themes for our broken society. The topic seems inescapably uncomfortable, but not in Jaglom’s hands and those of his cast. Yes, too many children in our society are raised by one parent with the other parent present in a limited role that sometimes seems larger-then life as much as it is ultimately unfulfilling. The film neither runs from that nor trivializes it. Nor does it exploit it.
+
“The film could have been a downer, but it most certainly is not. Jaglom trusts his actors to find the right dialog when it’s better than the script, something that Tanna Frederick, his star, points-out that’s been Jaglom’s trademark since he cast Jack Nicholson and Tuesday Weld years ago. Frederick’s comment and her character are wholly believable, and never more so than in her many tight close-ups, where her expressions are masterfully understated and in the picture-worth-a-thousand-words league.
+
“If some moments seem saccharine, those pass in the context of the story and the style of storytelling, where the full backdrop of life is on display, with all its joys and disappointments, and ultimately, the comfort of a happier time, longed for. Aside from its drop-you-right-in, unusually spare opening, devoid of most of what we have come to expect from a film’s first two or three minutes, the editing is just right, with no cuts called for, at all.
+
“Multi-platinum songwriter Harriet Schock’s music and lyrics are a full-fledged character throughout, as complete songs are used, and the visual images mix appealing images of sailing and beach waves with in-studio performances. The use of the live band shots give Jaglom a set of tools that reach beyond the usual filmmaker’s hard-cut or lap-dissolve to transition from one scene to another. And to the extent the songs create interludes, they never take you away from wanting to see what will happen next. Mostly, the songs illuminate the storyline and broaden both the appeal and the impact. (Though we would not include Schock’s “Starbuck’s” song in that, which felt a bit like product placement.)
+
“The acting is exactly right, across the board, with standout performances from Kelly DeSarla, veterans Victoria Tennant and Karen Black, Jaglom’s newcomer daughter Sabrina and young son Simon, and consummate pro Andrea Marcovicci, who ad libs the film’s best line. See it for the story and the splendid use of the music. Both will stay with you.”.
+
Jim Svejda, KUSC, L.A. - “Driven by Tanna Frederick’s astonishing performance, ‘Irene In Time’ proves once again that Henry Jaglom is America’s most daring, consistently provocative and stubbornly individual director.”
+
Betty Jo Tucker, ReelTalk - “Part of the charm of ‘Irene in Time’ comes from the film’s lovely music. ‘When I hired Harriet Schock to write the music,’ Jaglom reports, ‘telling her what Irene in Time was about, she -- stunned -- immediately said to me: ‘I married my father.’ And right there in my living room, she sat down at the piano and played a song for me that she had written, ‘I’m Dancing with My Father.’ Tanna sang it together with Harriet’s band in a club one night and suddenly all the pieces of what I was looking for seemed to fall into place.’”
+
Dan Kimpel, Music Connection Magazine - “Prolific gold and platinum Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Harriet Schock is lending her narrative talents to the latest film directed by cinematic auteur Henry Jaglom. The feature, titled Irene in Time, is centered on the complex relationships between fathers and daughters, and the potential lifelong consequences of these complex bonds. Schock’s contributions include four songs she performs on screen in conjunction with the film’s star, Tanna Frederick.
+
“The project evolved when Frederick joined the songstress and her band onstage at the venerable Los Angeles listening room Genghis Cohen. When Henry Jaglom attended the performance, he was inspired to create a film utilizing the songs as commentary. In addition to the quartet of on screen performances, Schock’s song ‘Dancing With My Father’ from her ‘American Romance’ CD is reprised, and the songwriter also appears on camera in multiple scenes.
+
“Schock is currently completing production on her seventh studio release, ‘Breakdown on Memory Lane,’ recorded with a stellar cast of Nashville musicians.”

They played radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” on St. Patrick’s Day, 2007, at the time they had EIGHT of the Top Ten songs on one Celtic Music Chart. No other artist or band repeated even once anywhere in the Top 100. And they earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “TttT.” Bob Stane of the Coffee Gaqllery Backstage says, “Such a talented group. Drawing big crowds without it bein’ a wake. As usual, they’ve been winning awards, but modest they are.”
+
Two-time winners of the “Orange County Music Awards” for “Best Folk Band,” this dynamic ensemble presents Celtic folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the local and not-so-local Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After," still gets international airplay, and was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guinness stout you just ordered at the bar... Sligo Rags really know their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz, and swing manage to sneak their way into the act. Bob Stane adds, “Much fun. Dynamic, up tempo, multi-talented. A fusion that just crackles.” More at www.sligorags.com

8 pm THE ALLEY CATS plus THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS opening, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
An eclectic and brilliant evening of vocal delights unfolds tonight. Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane has decided to debut THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS at 8 pm as the opening act to the performance of a cappella favorites THE ALLEY CATS.
+
“The Alley Cats,” says venue impresario Bob Stane, “are a perfect blend of musical talent and comic timing. Their interaction with audiences combined with their spontaneous humor makes each show refreshing and exciting. Royce, Juan, Mando, and Sean never miss a beat as they bring their own contemporary style to the great songs of the ‘50s and ‘60s. They have recorded four albums, which showcase their rich harmonies, as well as the energy and humor from their live shows. Every Alley Cat performance is accompanied by the sounds of laughter and voices joining in to sing the melodies we all know and love. Tight harmonies, universal humor, and unbelievable a cappella energy have made THE ALLEY CATS "America's Premier Doo-Wop Group" and “Most booked Doo-Wop group.”
+
PLUS There is the late disclosure of the surprise opening act tonight: THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS recreate and invoke the high spirited and deeply-felt period of music that was celebrated in American beat cafes in the ’50s and the early Greenwich Village folk revival era that was the underground counter point to the pop culture of that era. Dust of your bongos and fluff up your berets, and be ready for anything. Tix, $15.

Jackie is always on the go as a professional writer and producer of her own comedy shows at all the major comedy venues around the nation. SPECIAL Section -- new show debuts today on web radio:
.
10 am (Pacific) “BOB WILLS RADIO” internet launch on July 4th, 2009, at www.bobwills.com. It’s a weekly updated podcast launching at noon (Austin time), featuring historical interviews of former TEXAS PLAYBOYS and contemporary artists influenced by Bob Wills. The interviews include recordings from the respective artists and is a venture that Dwight Adair, owner of bobwills.com, and longtime friend of the Wills family, says "is a free, weekly tribute to the music and legacy of Bob Wills, a fun-filled half-hour show without commercial interruption, available world wide 24 hours a day."
+
Bob Wills Radio, on the official site of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, airs there and on The Broken Spoke site, www.brokenspokeaustintx.com, Austin's premiere honky-tonk that booked Bob Wills for multiple dates in the mid ‘60s. James White, owner of The Broken Spoke, remembers the thrill of seeing Bob Wills perform in his club, and says he feels Bob Wills Radio "is a wonderful opportunity for fans world wide" and "is a way we can continue The Broken Spoke's history of presenting legendary Texas music to all Country fans."
+
Dwight Adair has one of the world's largest collections of Bob Wills memorabilia and recordings. He says, "In the Bob Wills era, performances and personal charisma on daily noon radio broadcasts were how bands advertised their weekend dances, where they made the bulk of their income. When we discovered that our community base for bobwills.com visited the website in the greatest numbers at noon everyday, the idea for Bob Wills Radio was born."
+
Bob Wills Radio is wholly owned by www.bobwills.com, headquartered in Austin, Texas.

Free entertainment, tips only, in a great place, with nice people and good music. Vin Fiz Flyer tells us, “Old town Glendora is a kinda sleepy small Midwest town plopped into Southern California. A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. 3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

+
RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE with mandolin phenom EVAN MARSHALL (aka “Relaxin' Jackson”) playing a solo set then joining the band on fiddle, play the Redlands Bowl, 25 Grant St, Redlands; www.redlandsbowl.org
+
The Riders are not just named in FolkWorks magazine’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” feature, they are picked as THE best in the “Top Ten Live Acoustic Bands in L.A. in 2008: #1 - Riders of the Purple Sage. “They’re amazing and transcend their genre, as they prove when they perform with symphony orchestras. Endorsed by the widow of band founder Foy Willing, and with mandolin wizard Evan Marshall now solidly a member, they are the best acoustic band in L.A., period (www.ridersofthepurplesage.com).” In addition, Evan Marshall is named in that same FolkWorks feature among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” live instrumentalists in L.A.
+
They are one of, if not "the" most historical Western band in the world, having starred in films and radio from pre-war days to the present. Today's Riders, under the leadership of CODY BRYANT, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are instrumental virtuosos, including five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, twin fiddles, steel guitar, upright bass, drums/percussion, steel guitar, and consummate vocals. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound and enjoying the endorsement of SHARON WILLING, widow of band founder FOY WILLING and author of the book, “No One to Cry To,” the band continues to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages.
+
Larry Wines wrote of one performance that they were “ethereal” and “orchestral,” and indeed, they often perform with symphony orchestras. Larry added in that review, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.”
+

Sun, Jul 5; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm FATS KAPLIN & KRISTI ROSE play at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Kristi Rose can “sing the stars from the heavens” while Fats Kaplin, on guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and more, is a highly-sought musician who is universally acclaimed as “a brilliant multi-instrumentalist.” Fats is widely known for his work with hundreds of recording artists, and he sat-in with a bunch of the best acts at the recent Stagecoach Festival. Listeners to radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” will remember him from the album by the trio KANE-WELCH-KAPLIN.
+
You don’t put musicians from this elite league in a box or pigeonhole their genre. Together, Fats Kaplin and Kristi Rose have created “Pulp Country” as a musical genre and a state of mind. They have spun their tales of “the hooch-soaked, heartbroke netherworld” and taken them to rapt audiences around the world. It is a world that has been described as “Coltrane Meets Country.” They have played to thunderous response, on stages as diverse as the Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, major festivals and venues in Europe, and honkytonks and legendary rock clubs.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Onstage, (and all the world is one) Kristi Rose & Fats Kaplin, in stark Southern gothic style with lone electric guitar, fiddle, and a voice that gives cry to the heavens, conjure up the thinly veiled lives that we must all lead -- lives that are haunted by ghosts of regret, disrupted by carnal dreams, yet still able to be given over to rapturous joy.”
+
Kristi Rose wrote to tell us, “You can hear some of our music at our new Myspace page - www.myspace.com/kristirosefatskaplin and find out a little more about us at our own website, www.pulpcountry.com.” Tix are $15.

Now in its sixth year at the Fountain, "Forever Flamenco!" is a live concert of a Flamenco cuadro or group, consisting of one or two guitarists, a singer, three dancers, and often a percussionist. 8:30 pm MOIRA SMILEY & VOCO, TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT, FRANK FAIRFIELD, & HOMESICK ELEPHANT, plus “Cory the Caller” to call SQUARE DANCES, at Echo Curio, 1519 Sunset Bl, Echo Park 90026; 213-977-1279; www.echocurio.com. MOIRA SMILEY & VOCO and TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT have both performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT is that great old-time band who sponsors the annual “Los Angeles Old Time Social.” This is an outstanding evening lineup of music and dancing.
+
Jessica Catron of VOCO tells us, “What once was going to be a night with two stupendous artists playing has morphed into a night of four spectacular monsters of folk (if that is possible). Lock up your daughters and sons, cuz it is gonna be a hoedown. From the haunting and sometimes haunted strum und twang of FRANK FAIRFIELD (first time at the curio), to the return of our favorite lovie-dovie duo HOMESICK ELEPHANT (pick up some of their monographed wine glasses!) But the piece de resistance will be the ladies of VOCO as they turn the air itself into sweet, sweet sound, just with their voices. And then we’ve got the FOOT to take it all back to basics with a nice little hootenanny send-off.”

Mon, Jul 6; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm “JIM CURRY'S TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF JOHN DENVER” at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; info www.coffeegallery.com; reserv 626-398-7917. Husband and wife team JIM & ANNE CURRY deliver the multi-platinum hits of the late, great JOHN DENVER in a fun-filled evening of singing and stories. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Jim plays the guitar and sings John's songs in a crystal clear tenor that will take your breath away. Anne, his wife and musical partner, plays guitar and mandolin and sings harmony in all the right places. You'll be invited to sing along, share in the memories, learn new songs and howl at the moon (literally!)”
+
JOHN DENVER‘s music is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time. Jim Curry is an acclaimed performer for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer-songwriters ever to grace the stage. Tribute artist Jim Curry, whose voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie, “Take Me Home: The John Denver Story,” has performed Denver's music in sold-out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today's top performer of Denver's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits. Earlier this year, he performed with the Kansas City Symphony and members of John Denver’s band, using orchestral scores saved from destruction by Lee Holdridge, who wrote them for Denver’s recordings and concert tours. Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when "Rocky Mountain High," "Sunshine on My Shoulders," "Calypso," and "Annie's Song" topped the charts, and his popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other.
+
Together, Jim and Anne take you on a musical journey of the heart. They add, “Don't worry, you already know the words to the songs, and John Denver's message is worth repeating: ‘Be kind to the Earth and to each other’."
+
Anne Curry checked-in to tell us, “In addition to performing the songs of John Denver we are going to bring our good friend TOM PERRING to the stage and feature the songs of TIMBERLINE (a trio with Jim, Tom and myself). If you love harmony, this show is not to be missed! Tom’s busy teaching schedule and our busy travel schedule keeps us apart most of the time, so we are looking forward to this reunion and are eager to share it with you!” More at www.jimcurrymusic.com. $18.

One of venue impresario Bob Stane’s favorites, and always popular here. They are, says Bob, “a faithful recreation of what it would have been like to see The Beach Boys live, in concert, in their prime. This 5-member lineup is unrivaled in their sound, presentation, and professionalism. There are no backing tracks or extra musicians playing off-stage! SURFIN' SAFARI is as close as you will ever get to seeing the original 5-member lineup of the Beach Boys. The incomparable beauty of their vocal harmonies, the crashing back beat of Dennis Wilson's drums, the soaring surf guitar of Carl Wilson, and the genius of Brian Wilson's music is all here. The uniband choreography, the Fender guitar line up, the famous custom striped shirts, right down to the black suede Beach Boy boots, it's all here. SURFIN' SAFARI provides you with a great show, a great time, and fun, fun, fun till our Daddy takes the T-Bird away!” Tix $18.

Tue, Jul 7; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
9 pm CHARLIE BAKER plays his “special acoustic” West Coast CD release party at Wine Bistro, 11915 Ventura Bl, Studio City 91604; www.winebistro.net. Americana musician / actor / biker Charlie Baker’s new CD was recorded in California with Engineer / Producer Andy Ackland (Eagles / Meatloaf / Eric Clapton / Willie Nelson). Some of California’s top musicians are on it, including Anthony Crawford (Neil Young / Dwight Yoakam / Vince Gill) on steel guitar and David Leach (Blues Traveler / Jack Johnson / Dave Matthews Band) on percussion. Background vocals come from Beverley Stounton (James Taylor / Nelly Furtado / Michael Buble), currently a featured vocalist on ABC’s Emmy nominated “Dancing With The Stars” and vocal group Venice (Michael McDonald / Don Henley / Phil Collins).
+
Charlie has performed on numerous TV & radio shows and shared stages with Randy Newman, Waylon Jennings, Ted Nugent, Tommy Shaw, REO Speedwagon, Warren Zevon, and others. One of the songs on the album, “The Great River,” was featured in a PBS documentary, and used in several different video documentaries about the Misssissippi River. It got heavy use with media coverage of floods in the Midwest.
+
Here’s the review of the new CD from “Today’s Country” magazine: “A lot of people can be overheard in bars asking each other ‘what is country music these days?’ A good question, but try this one on for size instead. What is Americana music at all? I have heard countless descriptions of what this genre and style is and no two are the same but they all have the same spirit behind them. Americana isn’t about a genre or about what’s popular, it is about playing what you feel and singing about what you know. Then by that account Baker is Americana and he proudly displays it throughout his new self-titled album. His southern rockin’ country vibes are spread throughout the album and even when he slows things down a bit he just can’t help but to still carry that rock vibe as he shows with cuts like ‘Left Out Of Nowhere.’ His country roots are proudly put on display throughout ‘What’s Goin’ On’ where he sings of shooting old beer cans, cooking ribs on the Bar-b-que, and of course that trusty old John Deere and mowing the lawn. But he also explores the realism of a Saturday night for some guys out there on ‘Last Saturday Night,’ where he very candidly recounts an evening spent with biker girls, strip clubs, and a lot of beer. His well-crafted lyrics throughout the album paint perfect pictures not only of life, but rather the moments within’ it. So what is Americana? By Baker’s standards it is singing about true life, love, and all the things in between which make people who they are as he shows us throughout this album.”

Performances tonight by 2009 “COMET AWARD” winner SALLY ZITO and by 2008 winner ANNA MONTGOMERY.
+
SALLY ZITO is a life-long piano player and writer -- truly lifelong: she began her music career at age 4, performing classical piano concerts. These days, the Berklee College of Music grad writes and performs jazz-inflected music, much of it piano-based. Her brother, San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito, performs the guitar tracks on her CDs. The talent-laden family is easier to understand when you learn that their father, Joseph Zito, was composer-arranger for Nat King Cole. Sally studied composition and arranging early on with her father, composer/conductor/arranger Joseph Zito, going on to earn a Master’s degree in film scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and most recently, studying with her newest mentor, Harriet Schock. Sally and her band, THE SALLY ZITO PROJECT, have, over the past six years, been featured nationally on TV’s “Extra” and “Living Large,” played shows in numerous cities, and received ink in USA Today, the New York Times, the Boston Herald, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Sally’s music gets radio airplay across the US and in Canada. The band’s debut EP, “Cheap and Alive,” was released last year. More at http://sallyzito.com
+
The Soiree is always a fine event, and includes an all-you-can-eat buffet. A respectful “listening room” environment is provided for the performances, and there are plenty of industry networking opportunities before and after. It was co-winner in FolkWorks’ “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” for best monthly listening room. "An invigorating evening that proves there is art in Los Angeles after all." - Tom Kidd, Music Connection Magazine. Hosted by multi-platinum songwriter-recording artist HARRIET SCHOCK. 8 pm UKULELE LOKI'S GADABOUT ORCHESTRA at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Would you believe Bob Stane would hire such a group? Do bears mambo in the woods?
+
This Denver-based 6-piece chamber-pop band features ukulele, tuba, trombone, clarinet, glockenspiel, drums, and synth. Adjectives used to describe the band include: sepia-chord, indie-pan alley, and melancholy Brechtian carnival rock. The music appeals to fans of Neutral Milk Hotel, The Arcade Fire, Dr. Dog, the Decembrists, Sufjan Stevens, and more. The Gadabout Orchestra is a Denver favorite, having headlined all major venues and supported The Dresden Dolls, Chairlift, Devotchka, and many others. Band leader Aaron "Loki" Johnson has toured the country as a burlesque / cirque / sideshow MC. He worked with sword swallowers, a fire breathing Midget, and has MC'ed for Dita Von Tease, among others. He is considered one of the pioneers of the current ukulele revival, having promoted the instrument since 2000. Loki is looking forward to the opportunity to enhance the show with stories of his sideshow and circus experiences.
+
The "Denver phenomenon" bears mention. To this day, Denver remains a perplexing city. It is known as a hotbed for extravagant musical innovators who are both marred and nurtured by the isolating Rocky Mountains. There have been a few exceptions in Denver's relegation to the annals of national obscurity including Devotchka, The Apples in Stereo, 16 Horsepower, and The Fray. Ukulele Loki's Gadabout Orchestra is the next exception. And, for the past twelve years, Loki has been something of a figure in the "Denver Sound" underground. In part this is for his work as a musician (his former band, The Nogoodniks, was noted for pairing ukulele with gypsy guitar, accordion, and saw). Also, his award winning work as a burlesque revivalist, sideshow producer, and modern vaudevillian has endeared him to Denverites, among whom his name is synonymous with spectacle. But most of all, Loki is known in Denver as a founding DJ and manager of the linchpin for Colorado's underground music community: Radio 1190 KVCU, Boulder.
+
Ukulele Loki’s “biography of a vaudevillian / burlesqueteer / award-winning sideshow man” shows him to be more than a modern troubadour. Many have penned songs based around circus or burlesque imagery or Central European exoticism, but Aaron "Ukulele Loki" Johnson has lived it, having spent more time working with circus people than Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen combined.
+
In 2004, he took the highest honor for sideshow performers, winning The Circus Historical Society's "Candlelight Award." Following this achievement, he resigned from The Crispy Family Carnival to produce his acclaimed monthly vaudeville, variety, cirque, and burlesque showm, "The Folderol Follies." The same year, he formed his Gadabout Orchestra.
+
Ukulele Loki has performed with The Dresden Dolls, Devotchka, Chairlift, The Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Ditty Bops, The Asylum Street Spankers, The Bindlestiff Family Circus, The Lizard Man, Quintron, Dita Von Tease, The Billy Nayer Show, The Yard Dogs' Road Show, Lucent Dossier, Tokyo's Ukulele Afternoon, and many more.
+
Today, Ukulele Loki's Gadabout Orchestra plays music-mostly shows focusing on songwriting and arrangements. A tortured songsmith, a charming host and a humorist, Loki's on-stage persona conjures comparisons to disparate performers like Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, David Byrne, Robert Smith, Elvis Costello, and Gordan Gano. Think of Loki as a post-punk, death-rock, emo crooner / sad clown with a ukulele. And, given his history as a showman, an over-the-top, spectacle-laden show with performance artists is easy to come by, for the proper occasion.
+
The Gadabout Orchestra is: Ukulele, Vocals: Aaron "Ukulele Loki" Johnson; tuba: James Jacoby; clarinet: Kevin Reynolds; trombone: Sean Keenan; drums: Davis Wimberly; drums, percussion; glockenspiel / melodica: Kharis Eppstein. More at www.ukuleleloki.com/index.html. And you hear their podcast at http://ukuleleloki.com/Route78West/route_78_west_MP3s/route78west-6-21-2009.mp3

8 pm “TRIPPIN’ THE ’60s” with BARRY McGUIRE & JOHN YORK is back in L.A., and back at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. One night only.
BARRY McGUIRE stepped into the public eye in 1963 on the “Andy Williams Show” as the gravelly-voiced lead singer of the New Christy Minstrels. He launched his musical career with the million-sellers "Green, Green" and "Green Back Dollar." In 1965, at the heart of the peace movement, McGuire went solo. His growing awareness of social hypocrisy was expressed in his third hit, "Eve of Destruction" which echoed around the world as an anthem of the times and was banned from US radio airplay for “sedition.” (That’s right, he was accused of tring to overthrow the government with a folk song.)
+
Three years later, Barry was cast as the male lead in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair." Once again his voice was heard proclaiming the ideals of a radical generation. Dick Clark says, “When world events collide with Rock&Roll you get Barry McGuire”.
+
JOHN YORK is best known for his work as a member of the world-renowned Folk Rock/Country Rock group, the Byrds. He is currently working with Barry McGuire in "Trippin' The ‘60s." York’s vocal and instrumental talents have kept him in the company of such musical luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Clarence White, Nicky Hopkins, Mac Rebenack (Dr. John,) Doug Sahm (The Sir Douglas Quintet,) The Mamas and Papas, Johnny Rivers, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel (The Band) and many others. The TV show “The Place Where I Am Dreaming” featured John’s artistic collaboration with his wife, artist Sumi Foley. Recently, John has composed and recorded music for the lyrics of Kim Fowley on "West Coast Revelation." The duet "Redneck Ninja" highlights John's creative partnership with acclaimed songwriter Patrick Brayer. In 2007, John played concerts in Japan for the third time.

8 pm JOAN BAEZ plays Humphrey’s, 2301 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego; 619-224-3577; www.humphreysconcerts.com.
Joan Baez is a true musical and cultural force of nature. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of her legendary beginning at Boston’s famed Club 47. Along the way she has marched with Martin Luther King, sung on the first Amnesty International tour, took the fields with Cesar Chavez and won the 2007 Grammy “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Her latest recording, “Day After Tomorrow,” is a powerful collection of what can only be called “American Hymns.” The Boston Globe wrote, earlier this year, “Baez has never sounded wiser or more deeply human.” The Chicago Sun-Times added, “Baez’s spirit of peace and justice, rooted in faith, remains the same…” She played the Santa Monica Pier last night (see listing). And she performed at the prestigious “UCLA Live!” series back on Feb 19 and dazzled the audience. More at www.joanbaez.com.

8 pm RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE with mandolin phenom EVAN MARSHALL (aka “Relaxin' Jackson”) playing a solo set then joining the band on fiddle, play the Redlands Bowl, 25 Grant St, Redlands; www.redlandsbowl.org
+
The Riders of the Purple Sage have enjoyed L.A.’s most successful monthly residency, routinely selling-out six weeks in advance.
They exceeded their genre.” Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.” This is a free concert.

Fri, Jul 10:
9 pm SLIGO RAGS play at Nadine's Irish Mist, 16655 Pacific Coast Hwy, Sunset Beach. They are named in FolkWorks among L.A.’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” bands.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take the dozens of electric Americana shows into account!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
