ADJOA SKINNER is special. She is a self-described "Vaudeville Singer-Songwriter." Born and raised outside of Buffalo, NY, Adjoa is classically & jazz trained, with over 20 years of professional experience in music. She has performed on 3 different continents. A sought-after performer, teacher, session vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, she is based in Los Angeles and tours worldwide. (She is a favorite at the Coffee Gallery Backstage when she's in town.) Her new album, “Songs For Tall Women & The Short Men Who Love Them,” has guest artist tap dancer Andrew Nemr, Sister group SHEL, and Norwegian Tenor Torstein Sodal. Adjoa is captivating the hearts of critics and audiences alike. More at www.adjoaskinner.com
+
JEN ARMSTRONG was born in a village with more sheep than people, in the UK. Jen didn't have the most competitive of starts. This gave her a shock when, moving to Leeds to study a degree in pop music, she realized that actually, she wasn't the only person who could write songs and sing them well. Luckily, she has developed her own pop-rock style with catchy, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, coupled with a beautifully powerful vocal that gives her the edge over the usual pop songwriters. Jen visited L.A. to write and perform throughout 2012, and wrote in Scandinavia in August 2012 and January 2013 with various writing teams. Her debut EP arrived in June 2012 with a launch in Leeds in a storming success. Her next EP was released September 2012, launching with a tour with CAFFE NERO. She supported Billy Ocean at Grassington Festival, and Jools Holland at Cornbury Festival over the summer. One of Jen's most recent successes was winning "Rock the House" at the House of Commons in London. 2013 looks to be a very exciting year for this determined British artist.
+
ALAINA BLAIR is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter with bright, soulful vocals and deep lyrics that belie her young age. Alaina's sounds are influenced with tinges of her favorite artists, Joss Stone, Grace Potter, and Miranda Lambert. Alaina released her debut EP entitled “Gypsy Girl” in Dec. 2012 and is currently finishing her second CD. Both albums are produced by songwriter-musician Billy Alexander (FEEL, John Waite). “Gypsy Girl” is available in CD and download from iTunes and bandcamp.com. More at alainablair.com.

8 pm THE CAMPBELL BROTHERS bring their "Sacred Steel" show to the Smothers Theatre, on the campus at Pepperdine University, 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu; 310-506-4522.
+
The Campbell Brothers' awards and honors include Best U.S. Gospel Instrumentalists of the Year at the fourth annual Real Blues Awards in 1997, Best Gospel Album at the AFIM Indie Awards in 2002, and a National Heritage Fellowship presented to Chuck Campbell in 2004 by the National Endowment for the Arts.
+
"The Campbell Brothers play music...with pedal steel guitar lines swooping skyward like a gospel shouter; two Campbell brothers trade off leads, carrying the songs to peak after peak."--Jon Pareles, The New York Times.
+
They present a compelling, rich variety of material from the African American Holiness-Pentecostal repertoire with a new twist: the growling, wailing, shouting, singing, and swinging voice of the steel guitar -- their electrifying "Sacred Steel" show.
+
The type of music performed by the Campbell Brothers has only recently emerged from the House of God Keith Dominion Church, where for over 60 years it has been an integral part of worship and a vital, if little-known, American tradition.
+
As the music moves from sanctuary to concert hall, including the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and New York's Symphony Space, secular audiences are now able to appreciate a performance both devoted and rocking.
+
Pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell and his lap-steel-playing brother Darick are two of the finest in this tradition. Rounding out the band, which has been playing together for nearly two decades, is a high-energy rhythm section featuring brother Phil Campbell on electric guitar, his son Carlton on drums, and bassist Malcolm Kirby. Classic, gutsy gospel vocals by Katie Jackson and/or Denise Brown bring the ensemble to a level of energy and expression that defies description.
+
Tickets, priced at $35, $25, or $15 for the public and $10 for full-time Pepperdine students, are available now at 310-506-4522. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster (with the usual exorbitant fee) at 800-982-2787. More info at http://arts.pepperdine.edu/ or http://www.campbellbrothers.com.

PETER FELDMANN holds the “Legends” honor bestowed annually by the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest organization. The band is great, with DAVID WEST, TOM LEE, PETER, & BLAINE SPROUSE. Peter and the boys bring their traditional, yet innovative bluegrass sound to a place that warrants Peter’s comment: “Grange Halls are our native habitat. Come up early for some wine tasting and a gourmet meal, then stop by the Grange for a fine bluegrass show. Home-baked refreshments by the inimitable Linda Smith will be on sale. Advance tickets $12 at the Book Loft in Solvang, and on-line at www.bluegrasswest.com/tickets.htm. Tix at door, $15, in any remain.
