The Southern California Motion Picture Council has honored Will with a plaque declaring him “The Official Singing Cowboy of Hollywood”.

Well, it seems, says Will, that SLAPPY CHIPOTLE made his Los Angeles stand-up comedy debut with Will in December at the world-famous Improv in Hollywood, where, it seems, Slappy's bizarre brand of native-American humor was an instant sensation. Will Ryan has gone out on a limb by calling Slappy "the funniest Incan comedian on two continents!" His visa permitting, Slappy will join Will and the band for this one performance only. Tix, $18.

HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY, U.S.S. IOWA!
The USS IOWA, BB-61, was first commissioned February 22, 1943 becoming the first ship of her class to be commissioned, and the most formidable battleships ever to sail for the United States. The IOWA was later dubbed the “Battleship of Presidents” for taking to sea Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Since July, 2012, the IOWA is based as an historical attraction, open for tours, in San Pedro. The ship’s birthday was celebrated early, last weekend, and the event, featuring live music, was in the GUIDE.

So, what’s with the “farewell” gig? Danielle reports, “I am heading overseas for 9 months, to Turkey, to study the saz and Turkish music! Yes, that is right. Why Turkey, Turkish music or the saz? You ask... Well, when I stayed in Ottawa, I was exposed to Turkish culture. Yes, the coffee is good and the food amazing but what really got me was the music. At first my Western ears were just trying to grasp those quarter tones, polyrhythms and the harmony. So much emotion, so much expression. I felt a keen affinity, a deep connection with this music, as if its soul reached mine.”

She continues, “At one point I was given a saz. The saz is a Turkish type of lute. A seed was sown in my musical heart. In my mind, melodies, stories, colors started to form. I was on my way to a new journey. The decision to go to Turkey formed itself gradually over the last 8 months or so. The whole picture became more and more clear, and as the questions appeared, they solved themselves organically, a sure sign that things are in alignment. And so, the Aventuriere keeps on venturing.”

In his young career, ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has already redefined a heretofore under-the-radar instrument, been declared a musical "hero" by Rolling Stone, won accolades from the disparate likes of Eddie Vedder, Perez Hilton and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, wowed TV audiences on “Jimmy Kimmel” and “Conan,” earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, and even played in front of the Queen of England. This spring, he will be featured as the focus of a new PBS documentary titled “Life On Four Strings.”

“Ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro has taken the four-string, two-octave instrument to places no one could have imagined back in the golden years of Don Ho, ranging freely across the music spectrum from jazz, blues, and funk to bluegrass, classical, and folk with the ease of a musician fully in command of the possibilities of his chosen instrument. Born November 3, 1976 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Shimabukuro was given his first ukulele and lesson by his mother when he was only four-years-old. Fascinated by the uke, he eventually began playing regularly at a local Honolulu café. He was a founding member of Pure Heart, and played on the trio's first two albums before leaving to form Colon. In 2001 Shimabukuro began his solo career, releasing Elaine Maru (In Memory Of) on Surfside Records that same year. He signed with Epic in 2002 and released Sunday Morning on the label a year later, following it with Skyline in 2003. In 2005 he found an international distributor for his own label, Hitchhike Records, and began issuing his own CDs, including Crosscurrent, Dragon, My Life, and the much lauded Gently Weeps, which included a haunting version of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Ostensibly, the husband and wife duo of Matt and Shannon Heaton bring gutsy melodies, crafty lyrics and traditional Irish-style tunes to the stage. They are devoted to Irish traditional music and uplift listeners by connecting with each other and the people around them.

Before focusing on Irish music, Matt earned a classical guitar degree, played with Chicago popsters the Flavor Channel, and fronted Nuevo tango group Orquesta Atipica. Meanwhile Shannon studied flute and ethnomusicology at Northwestern University, joined Matt’s tango band, and took weekend trips to Chicago’s Wat Dhammaram to continue the Saw Oo (lap fiddle) and Thai singing studies she began when she was an exchange student in Thailand.

By the time Shannon was 16 years old, her favorite mixed tape included “Highlife music” from her family’s tenure in Nsukka, Nigeria; Native American stories from her parents’ research trip for their book, “Let My People Know;” traditional Thai songs on Saw Duang and Saw Oo from her year in Suphanburi, Thailand; and as much of Matt Molloy’s 1984 “Stony Steps” as would fit on the rest of the cassette.

Early exposure to languages and folk melodies instilled in Shannon a love of tradition. From her early piano and recorder lessons (from her mom and Belgian neighbor in Nigeria) to her flute and Irish flute studies in Chicago, Shannon was drawn to traditional music. And when she first heard Irish flute playing on her Grandpa Murphy’s turntable she was hooked on Irish.

Though Shannon specializes in Irish wooden flute and traditional Irish-style singing, she adores the Chicago musicians who got her started, and is deeply involved with her local Boston traditional music scene. She co-founded Boston’s Celtic Music Fest and teaches for Boston’s Comhaltas. She has retained a deep interest in world music, especially the music of Thailand. Shannon and husband Matt Heaton included their own Irish-style version of Thai classic “Lao Dueng Duen” on their 2009 release “Lovers’ Well,” their 4th CD as a duo.

Matt’s first taste of professional music was behind the organ console as a page-turner for his father CHARLES HEATON, a noted organist and composer. After a couple of false starts on the piano and trumpet, Matt picked up his first guitar, a Harmony electric plus amp (and butter dish) for $35 at a garage sale. After the amplifier exploded, he focused his energies on the acoustic guitar.

To call Taylor a cutting edge artist is an understatement. “I’ve written songs about slavery, but here in America that’s considered part of the past,” Taylor explains. “What’s happened and what’s happening to Native Americans is still going on. A lot of people forget that. This is a reminder.”

With his customary brevity, power and grace, Taylor conveys his stories in intimate detail and uses his rich baritone voice to give his characters breath and humanity. The album starts on point with “My World Is Gone,” portraying how the gilded seductions of the white man’s culture undermined the Native American way of life. The melancholy in Taylor’s and Nanji’s vocal performance, as they sing from the perspective of an Indian tormented by temptation and loss, is buoyed by the gentle melodies of Anne Harris’ fiddle and Nanji’s electric and acoustic guitars — the acoustic six-string an Otis Taylor signature model, with only 14 frets, built by the premier instrument makers at Santa Cruz Guitars.

Taylor revisits his song “Lost My Horse,” which originally appeared on 2001’s White African, with a new arrangement that features him and Nanji trading guitar and mandolin lines.

“In the days of the frontier, having a horse could be a matter of life or death, or comfort or poverty, and the horse has been an important part of Native American culture in the west, so the song fit perfectly,” he explains.

“Sand Creek Massacre Mourning,” which recounts the murder of 200 Cheyenne and Arapaho victims by Col. John Chivington’s cavalry in 1864, rests on the backbone of Taylor’s banjo, his primary instrument. He’s played mostly electric banjos on previous albums, save for 2008’s roots-focused Recapturing the Banjo, but on My World Is Gone Taylor employs
four-, five- and six-string acoustic models. “I wanted to get back to that organic sound, because the banjo’s spoken to me since I was a kid,” he says. “Its voice instantly brings you back in time, and so much of My World Is Gone is about history and tradition that its sound is perfect for these songs.”

CLAIRE HOLLEY, a Yep Roc Records artist, has had her self-titled debut featured on NPR’s “Weekend Edition.” She writes songs that are literary, playful, meditative, and earthy. A native of Mississippi, she owes much to the southern tradition of storytelling, and just as much to the southern tradition of charm. With spare, delicate arrangements and a frank, lovely, and versatile sound, she sings deceptively simple songs. Claire began playing music when she was just two years old, when she and her grandmother, an accomplished jazz pianist, would play chop sticks on the piano at her home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Claire moved to Chicago for college and began performing at coffeehouses and writing songs. At the suggestion of one of her professors, she studied the poems of William Blake and set one of them to music. That, along with two songs she wrote for the college arts CD, Kodon, set a nice foundation for recording songs for “Night Air,” her first independent release. Soon after college she moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she began recording in earnest, getting radio play on WUNC’s “Back Porch Music.” She signed with Yep Roc Records and things keep getting better.

• What is a memoir? How much does it have to do with who’s telling the story? Everything, maybe, and if that’s so, how does one create an authentic and credible narrative persona?
• How much do we know when we start?
• What do we stand to discover in the writing (and reading)?
• Truth in nonfiction -- how much can one stray, if at all?
• Can the writer reveal "secrets" about characters -- especially if they were "bad guys" -- without

Her prose has been published in many journals and anthologies – The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, Agni, Creative Nonfiction, Kenyon Review Online, and Ploughshares among them – and she received special mention in the Pushcart Anthology 2010 for an essay in the Water~Stone Review. MICHAEL S. KLEIN, ESQ., has a broad range of transactional experience in the areas of entertainment law and business transactions. In addition to his legal work, Mr. Klein is the long-term chair of the First Amendment Committee of the ACLU of Southern California. In that capacity and as an individual, he has also spoken frequently on civil liberties issues. LEE GALE GRUEN's memoir, “Adventures with Dad: A Father and Daughter’s Journey Through a Senior Acting Class,” will be published on May 15, 2013. Prior to taking this turn in her life, Lee Gale had a 37-year career as a probation officer. After retiring, she and her 85-year-old father started attending an acting class for seniors at Emeritus College in Santa Monica, just for fun. Ms. Gruen wrote the scenes they performed together for three years in the class showcases, bonding more than at any time in their lives. She went on to become a working actress, appearing in television, short films, commercials and community theater. She regularly performs at her alma mater, UCLA, for the UCLA Medical School, portraying patients for student training, and was also one of six supporting exercise/dancers in a 2011 Jane Fonda exercise DVD. Her transition to becoming an actress as a senior has been written about in Time Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. She is currently working on her next book of memoirs, told in short story form, and continues to be an active advocate for senior community programs. The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.

STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.

Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”

In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.

The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.

Annual “Waterfront Blues Fest” in Portland, Oregon brings 75 bands, from blues to swing and a Zydeco lineup includes CHUBBY CARRIER & THE BAYOU SWAMP BAND, LIL’ WAYNE & SAME OL’ 2-STEP, THE PINE LEAF BOYS, HORACE TRAHAN & THE OSSUN EXPRESS, TOOLOOSE, & ATOMIC GUMBO. Most of the 75 blues & swing bands had yet to be posted at press time. The fest is in Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, and brings over 20,000 attendees each day.

Our Cajun-zydeco dance friends tell us, “If flying in, best to avoid a rental car & parking fees in downtown. Options for rooms include www.hotwire.com for a 3-star hotel ($68) at the airport (with shuttle from terminal) within walking distance to the Cascade light rail station. To / from downtown takes 45 minutes, and drops you 4 short blocks from the fest.
