MARDI GRAS, which sounds so magical in Cajun French, simply means “Fat Tuesday” in English. Don’t even ask how that came about. Just go, and have a good time. Laissez les bon temps rouler.
.
(Well, okay, we’ll explain it: It’s “fat” Tuesday because it’s the last day to party and pig out and imbibe before the arrival of the somber Catholic Lenten Season, beginning with Ash Wednesday and lasting until Easter. Louisiana was settled by French Catholics. Lent is about depriving yourself for the sake of piety. Thus, the original idea of party-without-guilt comes from Mardi Gras. And what happens at Mardi Gras stays at Mardi Gras since it’s not okay the next day (Ash Wednesday) to talk about fun. Yes, the theme was stolen by Las Vegas, where nothing comparable to Mardi Gras has ever happened, anyway. They’re awash in money and greed. Louisiana is awash in shrimp and crawfish (and hopefully no oil spills). Now you know. Why, certainly; you’re welcome.)

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING…

MARDI GRAS! (late addition)
Tue, Feb 12, in Hollywood:
2 pm DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND performs live at Amoeba Music, 6400 Sunset Bl, Hollywood; 323-245-6400; www.amoeba.com. Preceded from 1-2 pm by dj’s spinning New Orleans music, and followed at 3 pm by a New Orleans-style “Second Line Parade,” so come in costume.
+
During this Mardi Gras day of festivities at Amoeba Hollywood, a portion of sales at the store will go directly to the TIPITINA'S FOUNDATION and the NEW ORLEANS MUSICIANS’ CLINIC (NOMC). Tipitina’s Foundation seeks to preserve Louisiana and New Orleans’ musical heritage, while New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic is dedicated to providing affordable healthcare to New Orleans musicians. Though it’s been more than eight years since Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans in August 2005, recovery and relief efforts continue from one of the costliest and deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history.
+
Every year, Amoeba does a Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday celebration with a charity benefit component, and a portion of the proceeds from all three Amoeba stores benefit relief efforts in New Orleans for the third consecutive year. In Hollywood, the family-friendly event with live music draws crowds every year.
+
Another important contribution to charity reaches beyond today: this year, Amoeba is the exclusive distributor for the CD “Congo Square Vol. 1,” the first of six planned volumes tracing the development of New Orleans music, with ALL proceeds of the sale benefiting New Orleans relief efforts. Read more about “The Congo Square Project” at www.thecongosquareproject.com.
+
There’s even more on the Amoeba site, in BILLYJAM’s interview with Congo Square producer FABIAN JOLIVET, at www.amoeba.com/blog/2013/01/jamoeblog/interview-with-producer-fabian-jolivet-of-new-orleans-benefit-the-congo-square-project-distributed-exclusively-by-amoeba.html .
+
In addition, you might want to check-out Amoeba.com’s “Vinyl Vaults,” featuring more than 100 remastered songs by blues great LOUIS ARMSTRONG, from the years 1923 to 1932, many available exclusively from Amoeba and for the first time ever as downloads.
+
Today’s live performance and parade are for all-ages, and a free event.

7 pm JOHN GORKA plays the “OJAI CONCERT SERIES,” at Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E Ojai Av, Ojai; 805-665-9952; www.ojaiconcertseries.com.
+
Rolling Stone acclaims him as, “the leading singer-songwriter of the New Folk movement.”
+
John Gorka is an honored icon of folk tradition. Energetic acoustic music that is not a trend, not a fad, but an expression of everyday life, is his trademark. John’s mellifluous voice and unique songcraft weave a magical spell that can only be described as ‘Gorka.’

With his rich low tenor voice, elegant melodies, delicate instrumental accompaniment and original song lyrics, which are low on clichés and high on originality, John Gorka's music projects a profound intimacy.

He won the Kerrville Folk Festival's prestigious New Folk Award in 1984, and his debut album, “I Know,” received critical acclaim for his songs' subtle wit and acute character observation; before long he was touring with the likes of MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER and NANCI GRIFFITH. In the following years he has released a dozen albums and has become a bona fide folk legend. You can check out his music at www.johngorka.com
+
“Listening to John Gorka sing, one can get goose bumps all over. There are many reasons: fresh lyrics, a stunning emotional baritone and his twisted humor.” - New York Times.
+
“Gorka is widely heralded for the sophisticated intelligence and provocative originality of his songs.” - Boston Globe.

SCOTT GATES (Salty Suites) gained early acclaim as a prodigy on the mandolin. He now plays guitar and writes songs, too. Having performed all over the country and with artists as varied as JOHN McEUEN, NATHAN McEUEN, KENNY LOGGINS, STEVE MARTIN and the NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, and a veritable who's-who of the bluegrass world. Scott performed in 2010 on the “Ellen Show” with STEVE MARTIN, recorded with KENNY LOGGINS on his family album, was featured on the Cable TV show “Justified” with band mate Chuck, and toured the US with NATHAN McEUEN.
+
CHUCK HAILES (Salty Suites) is one of the top young bass players in the country, schooled in classical and jazz bass playing and techniques. Chuck writes his own music and has teamed with Scott to create many new musical gems. With his background in bluegrass music, and degree in the Upright Bass, Chuck sings and plays in a way that is uniquely his own.
+
CHELSEA WILLIAMS (Salty Suites) has been writing and performing her own music since she was 13 years old. Chelsea took the stage on her own by the age of 17, performing at clubs and coffee shops. While some of her early songs are still hits with her fans, she has continued to develop as a writer penning nearly 100 original songs to date. Chelsea currently makes her living by playing on the street for tips and selling a home-made demo, having sold thousands of CDs, one-by-one, simply on her own on the street. Her magnetic presence draws them in and her songs set the hook.
+
Check out the Salty Suites on their Facebook page or at their web site, www.saltysuites.com. This is a stellar young band still finding new fans.
+
Plus…
LILY WILSON, in addition to her own albums and performances, has contributed her voice to other artists' projects, and has performed and recorded with MELISSA ETHERIDGE, BETH THORNLEY, KIKI EBSEN, PHILIP SAYCE, KENNY LOGGINS, PATTY GRIFFIN, and JOHN BATDORF.
+
Lily grew up in a small, isolated valley on a vineyard in Napa, California. She found inspiration in her parents' records by artists like Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, The Beatles, and Janis Joplin.
+
Music took over her life in earnest when Lily moved to Spain in college. She was drawn to the Flamenco songs coming from gypsy caves above the city, and also to the Moroccan music played in her neighborhood in Granada. She started writing and performing on street corners, teashops, and clubs all over Andalusia. Her first CD, “Winter Song” was recorded on Maui, with collaborations by Adam Seymour (The Pretenders), and Susie Hug (Travis, Calexico). Her second, self-titled C.D. was recorded in Los Angeles with producer/ slack-key guitarist, Jim West (Westernmost Music)
+
Lily's solo travels through Chile and Argentina with a backpack, guitar, and lots of journals provided the inspiration for the 12 songs (two in Spanish) which make up her third CD, “Stargazer,” recorded with producer/ composer, Mark Browne (Simple Minds, Melissa Etheridge bassist). She and Mark collaborated again on “The Right Time,” her 4th CD, which features “Meet Me in the Middle” and "A Little Life," which earned her the L.A. Music Award for "Female Vocal of the Year" in the AC category.
+
On her brand new release, “Harbour,” Lily explores the world of co-writing, adding new perspectives and voices to her music. The “Harbour” theme runs through all the tracks. “With all the craziness in the world right now, I was constantly reminded of the things I have to be thankful for. This group of songs feels like a twinkling harbour filled with front porches and real friends.” More at www.lilywilson.com

Eric Burdon has one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in rock and roll. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1994 and hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Voices of All Time, Burdon’s music forged new territory while also topping the charts for more than five decades. Highly prolific, Burdon has released nearly 50 records in those 50 years, as front man of The Animals and WAR and simply as Eric Burdon. Through the changing sounds and genres, what remains constant is his courage as an artist to explore new sounds, leading into new territory with his unrivaled and unique voice. Eric Burdon has shared the stage with legends such as Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Witherspoon, Otis Redding and Bruce Springsteen, and was recently cited by cutting edge musicians Patti Smith and Iggy Pop in their personal top tens. Hear Burdon discuss his musical beginnings as a young man growing up in Newcastle, England, what it was like to help pioneer the psychedelic San Francisco sound and the release of his newest album, “Til Your River Runs Dry." With his two musical sisters it was tough to find a harmony part while the family sang on car trips to pass the time. He was raised country but seduced by rock and roll. Doing music for TV shows, including “X Files,” “Magnificent Seven,” and “Cold Case” paid the bills. But he has a passion to play guitar and he keeps cranking out his own tunes. +
The group includes Grammy-award winner LORENZO MARTINEZ, and ERNESTO MOLINA, who himself comes from a lineage of Mariachi royalty. And leader and accordion wizard OTONO LUJAN is in demand in recording studios far and wide.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Been here about 5 times. This is quality. We only get them once per year so come on in.”
+
Is it possible to be unhappy when there's an accordion in the room? We think not but go see Conjunto Los Pochos and find out for yourselves (and feel free to leave the Xanax at home). While steeped in traditional Tex-Mex Conjunto music, they are not quite your typical Tex-Mex group. Los Pochos have traversed the folk scene fusing country and blues, serenading crowds from museums to concert halls, and providing the mystical, musical ambience for theater productions throughout the United States and Canada. The two co-founders of the group met at CalArts and parlayed their degrees in Visual Arts and Jazz Piano into a lucrative career of banging out traditional Mexican music.
+
With a punchy accordion and a seriously catchy sound, Conjunto Los Pochos has reinfused the traditional conjunto and norteño sounds into L.A.'s music scene -from East L.A. to the Westside, throughout Southern California and across the country. They have performed regularly at the “Grassroots Music Festival” and the “Tejano Conjunto Festival” in San Antonio, Texas, and have shared the stage with legendary musicians PONCHO SANCHEZ, LOS DOS GILBERTOS, and the renowned FLACO JIMENEZ. They also do American and British pop songs to a Tex Mex flavor and beat. Bob Stane calls them a “SOLID SHOW,” and the Guide celebrates them every time they play someplace we can hear them. Tix, $18.

Born and raised in East Los Angeles, his cross-cultural influences from teriyaki to tortillas gave him a broader perspective & appreciation for the world around him. As the current director of SongNet, Jimi is a songwriter advocate, journalist, motivational speaker & someone who knows the importance of knowing people for who they are, not for what they can do for you.

The first half is solely dedicated to an in-the-round critique workshop where writers present one song each - either on CD or live - with feedback and critique given by a guest speaker or the Songsalive! moderator (who in-turn allows some comments from attendees also). The second half is dedicated to a Music Industry educational and informative discussion/talk, often with an industry guest speaker, and plenty of time to talk and network.

Averaging over 150 concerts a year for the last four years, INCENDIO’s live show has become an explosive improvisatory journey, garnering tremendous audience response in such diverse venues as the Strawberry Music Fest in Yosemite, the Sundance Film Festival, Verizon Music Festival, Catalina Jazztrax, California World Festival, and many more. Their four previous CD’s have enjoyed international radio airplay and critical acclaim. Their live DVD and CD, “Dia Y Noche”, captures a daytime show at the Strawberry Festival back in 2004 and a nighttime show at the Countrywide Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Center. Of course, they’ve gotten even better since then. INCENDIO is JIM STUBBLEFIELD (guitar), LIZA CARBE (bass and guitar), and JEAN-PIERRE DURAND (guitar). Tix, $20.

His two gigs here – including one that opened the venue -- went so well that Bernie was offered a monthly residency, second Sunday of each month through April.
+
Bernie says of this new venue, "It's a great place to hear some acoustic Blues and to see what dozens of crafters are working on. Food and beverages are available. Parking and admission are free. I perform in the lounge area, where there are tables and chairs, and the live music is piped throughout the building. Take a Sunday drive to the scenic Port of L.A. and hang out for a while. I bet you'll enjoy it."

The Guide adds that you can go in the morning and tour the Battleship Iowa or the Victory ship, both anchored on display in San Pedro, then go for lunch and great live blues music with Bernie at CRAFTED.

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.
+
STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+
Tickets for STAGECOACH are “All-in pricing,” with a “What-you-see-is-what-you-pay,” no surprises policy that others need to emulate. Prices include all fees & shipping:

Package P2, $799 (limit of 6 per household)
